HAWAII BESET BY MULTIPLE MAJOR HURRICANES

HAWAII REPUBLICAN PARTY GETS NEW EXEC. DIRECTOR We don’t get a chance too often to write anything about the Hawaii Republican Party because, well, we live in Hawaii. Sure, the dozen or so individuals trying to grab the Republican presidential nomination offer nothing but screaming headlines these days concerning their, well, let’s be generous and say “controversial” stances over immigration, racism, abortion, torture, the Iraq War, climate change and women in general, to just name a few. But here in Hawaii, the Republican Party is a bit of a non-story.

By my count, just a sliver of the state Legislature has the little “R” next to their names–one in the Senate (out of 25 members) and seven in House (out of 51). That means less than 11 percent of Legislature is Republican, leaving the other 89 percent controlled by Democrats.

Dealing with that situation (okay, disaster) is newly appointed Hawaii Republican Party Executive Director Marcia

Tagavilla. “Marcia joins us with an outstanding record of service and leadership in the Party,” said State Party Chair Fritz Rohlfing, in an Aug. 26 news release from the state GOP. “She will move us forward in electing more Republicans to state and federal offices in 2016.”

Yeah, good luck with that. Tagavilla will probably do as well as anyone else in such a thankless job, but keep in mind she’s still fairly new to politics (her first political job seems to have been a Hawaii Republican Party intern in 2010). In 2014, she ran as a candidate in her only political contest so far, for state representative in House District 32 (Salt Lake/Aliamanu). Her opponent, Democratic Party incumbent Linda Ichiyama, trounced her by 32.7 percentage points.

Still, Hawaii GOP officials see even that loss as evidence of Tagavilla’s strength.

“As a first-time Republican candidate running against an entrenched Democrat incumbent in a district easily carried by David Ige in the gubernatorial race, Marcia’s people-oriented campaign resulted in a significant improvement over our 2012 nominee’s vote percentage and placed her among the top ten Republican candidates challenging previouslyelected Democrat incumbents” said Pat Saiki, immediate past chairperson of the Republican Party, in an Aug. 26 state GOP news release on Tagavilla’s appointment.

Saiki’s take on Tagavilla’s 2014 campaign certainly sounds reasonable, until you look at the actual election results, which show Saiki’s use of the words “significant improvement” is questionable. In 2014, 2,340 people voted for Tagavilla, giving her 32.2 percent of the vote. And while it’s true that in 2012, Republican Garner Shimizu got just 28.4 percent of the vote when running against Ichiyama,

he also won 2,375 votes–35 more votes than Tagavilla won two years later.

Then again, we’re talking Hawaii Republicans here. Given their political track record over the last 60 years or so, it would be hard for any leadership to make matters worse for them.

WAYNE DYER DIES IN KA‘ANAPALI World-famous self-help guru Dr. Wayne W. Dyer died at the age of 75 at his home in Ka‘anapali on Aug. 29, The Maui News reported two days later.

A part-time Maui resident who often appeared on PBS and Oprah Winfrey’s talk show, Dyer sold many millions of copies of his 30 or so books, all of which offered some sort of guidance on how people should live their lives.

If it seems like the Hawaiian Islands are pins in a giant Pacific Ocean bowling alley, just standing there while one after another hurricane hurls towards us (thanks Johnny A for the metaphor!), it’s because we are. We’ve already had our share of big storms pose potential trouble to Hawaii this summer, but now we’ve got three actual named storms–Kilo, Ignacio and Jimena, all classified as “major” hurricanes–rolling through the Pacific Ocean.

This isn’t just a rare thing–it’s unprecedented.

“This is the first recorded occurrence of three Category 4 hurricanes in the central and eastern Pacific basins at the same time,” The Weather Channel reported on Aug. 30. “In addition, it’s also the first time with three major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger) in those basins simultaneously, according to hurricane specialist Eric Blake of the National Hurricane Center.”

Last week, state officials even came this close–this close!–to hitting the panic button when it looked like Hurricane Ignacio might slam into Hawaii.

“We understand the public is fatigued from experiencing four major approaching storms so far this season, but we urge people to take the weekend to prepare their homes and families for impacts that could be felt statewide,” said Doug Mayne, Administrator of Emergency Management, in an Aug. 28 news release from Governor David Ige’s office. “Severe weather associated with Ignacio is expected, and with Jimena not far behind, we need to ready ourselves and our loved ones as much as possible with the time we have. We will continue to work with our county, state and federal partners and leadership to monitor the storms and provide the public with timely updates as we receive them.”

Kilo and Ignacio ended up bypassing the state, and Jimena is still too far away to tell with any certainty what impact it might have on Hawaii. But considering that all this happened during the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans, it was plenty scary.

Hate to say this, but we also knew things would get hairy during hurricane season this year–climate change, a particularly active El Nino season, and so forth. In fact, we even blogged about it a year ago.

“From 1979 to 2003, both observational records and our model document that only every four years on average did a tropical cyclone come near Hawaii,” blogger/ ex NOAA Hurricane Hunter Jeff Masters wrote in Aug. 2014. “Our projections for the end of this century show a two-tothree-fold increase for this region.”

This season seems much stronger, even than that, but hey–the festivities don’t end until Nov. 30, so there’s plenty of time for a few more scares at least.

Maui Pride is a fun and festive nonprofit that works to encourage, celebrate and educate people about the positive diversity of the LGBTQ community. Each year, it gives back to the community with a group of scholarships presented during Pride Festival Weekend, Oct. 2-4. The main purpose of the scholarship awards is to support and educate the community by helping deserving recipients pursue their education.

“The mission of Maui Pride is not about teaching tolerance. Instead, we work tirelessly toward achieving appreciation of all forms of diversity in society through education and enlightenment,” said Chuck Spence, Vice President of Maui Pride and owner of the Maui Sunseeker LGBT Resort. “What better way to accomplish this mission than through the Maui Pride scholarship program? It is the pinnacle of the work this organization does all year round.”

The Maui Pride board of directors is now accepting applications for its 2015 scholarship awards. Scholarships are awarded to Hawaii residents of all ages who are attending a post-secondary school for the 2015-2016 school year; qualifying educational institutions include community colleges, four-year colleges and specialty trade schools. In addition to being a resident of Hawaii, scholarship applicants must either identify as LGBTQ or have an LGBTQ community member as a parent. The scholarships must be used within 12 months of receiving the award.

Funds for the scholarships are raised through various Maui Pride events including Pride Festival Weekend, the annual Lava Soiree and monthly Rainbow DineOut events. Funds are also raised via direct donations to Maui Pride, a registered 501c3 non-profit organization.

Maui Pride–a relatively young organi-

zation–has awarded more than $21,000 in scholarships since the program’s inception. Maui Pride scholarships are awarded based upon past, present and future work that benefits the education and acceptance of the LGBTQ community. There is also a Raja Shortell Memorial Scholarship that honors the memory and work of Raja in the fields of working with troubled youths or culinary arts.

Last year, the nonprofit awarded scholarships to five recipients, including Maui student/musician WenLu Duffy.

“The [scholarship] funds have helped me further my education at University of Hawaii Maui College, where I am taking prerequisite classes which will allow me to transfer to a four year college to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Science or Music Performance,” Duffy said. “Aside from the Scholarship Fund, Maui Pride has helped me clarify my identity and successfully integrate into the LGBT community.”

Haleakala National Park’s new Junior Ranger Activity Book was unveiled at a “Meet the Authors” event on Sunday, Aug. 30 at the Headquarters Visitor Center in the Summit District.

The new book, the centerpiece of the park’s Junior Ranger program, was recently revised by six-year-old Eliot Carter and his mom, Lisa Carter, as part of a home school project.

Eliot and his mom rewrote the Junior Ranger book, with oversight and input from park staff. Eliot, his parents and local community families field tested the activities for the project, which was led by park education specialist Katelyn Thomson. In addition, local home school students provided much of the artwork for the revised book.

“I enjoyed doing the meetings with the rangers and getting to talk about ideas,” said Eliot. “I hope the kids that come to the park enjoy the Junior Ranger program more. I hope they learn about native birds and mollusks. We got to come up with cool ideas.”

Prior to revising the book, Eliot had completed the Haleakala Junior Ranger program 13 times. He has earned Junior Ranger badges in seven national parks.

His mom Lisa said she really enjoyed watching Eliot bring his child’s imagination and enthusiasm to the project.

“He taught us grownups a lot about what kids think is fun and what inspires kids to learn,” Lisa Carter said. “I also enjoyed collaborating with rangers from all areas of the park.”

To complete the Junior Ranger program, visitors can request a free Activity Book at any Haleakala National Park visitor center. Participants earn badge points based on age and there is no age

limit; badge points indicate how difficult an activity is. The book can also be downloaded at Nps.gov/hale/learn/ kidsyouth/beajuniorranger.htm for people who wish to learn more about Haleakala but aren’t able to visit the park in person.

There are 19 activities to choose from in the book including: Which Moku Are You In?; Gifts from the Land and Sea; Flight of the Nene; Snail Trail; and Stump the Ranger. Activities can be completed in any part of the park. After completing the requirements, participants are sworn in as Junior Rangers and awarded a badge. People who complete the downloaded version can mail the completed book back to the park in order to receive a badge.

“This project is a great example of creatively reaching out to and partnering with the local community,” said superintendent Natalie Gates. “Visitors of all ages will benefit from this new program.”

The book contains a Hawaiian language pronunciation guide and the Junior Ranger pledge is written in both Hawaiian and English. Thomson was awarded a $5,000 Superintendent’s Grant to revise, design and print the book, which was last updated in 2002.

The goal of National Park Service Junior Ranger programs is to inspire the next generation of park stewards through self-guided activities that focus on the resources and importance of national parks. The origin of Junior Ranger programs dates back to 1930 when a Yosemite Park naturalist started a Junior Naturalist School. Today, Junior Ranger programs exist throughout the national park system. ■

The distress across the Western world in July over the big-game killing of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe was apparently misdirected, according to veteran “animal communicator� Karen Anderson of Elk, Washington, who told Facebook and Internet visitors (AnimalCommunicating.com) that Cecil and she had discussed his demise and that he was over it. In May, three Santa Ana, California, police officers who had just raided the unlicensed Sky High Holistic medical marijuana dispensary were caught on the facility’s surveillance video eating supposedly seized cannabis-infused chocolate bars, and an “internal affairs� investigation was opened.

However, in August, the Orange County Register reported that the cops went to court to have the video suppressed. Their familiar legal argument is that the video violates their right to privacy–in that they had purposely disabled the cameras before they began munching the contraband and thus had the requisite “expectation of privacy� that triggers the right. (Possibly, they had missed a camera.)

DUMBEST SUSPECT EVER The mother of three children in Grandview, Missouri, suspected that Dameion McBride, 22, had sexually molested her two daughters (ages 4 and 8) and son (age 3), but McBride indignantly denied it, claiming that he is a child-abuse survivor himself, and booked himself on the national Steve Wilkos TV show in May to take a lie detector test to clear his name. However, he failed the test as to each child and was subsequently arrested. The Associated Press reported that McBride insisted on a police lie detector test–and failed that, too.

THE CONTINUING CRISIS On Aug. 1, one of the world’s weirdest border disputes came to an end, as India and Bangladesh exchanged more than 160 “enclaves�–sovereign territory com-

pletely surrounded by the other country’s sovereign territory (in principle, making travel out of the enclaves impossible unless the enclave had an embassy or another office that issues visas). In fact, there was one Indian enclave (Dahala Khagrabari) completely within a Bangladeshi enclave that is completely inside an Indian enclave inside Bangladesh.

THE LITIGIOUS SOCIETY The estate of Dr. Rajan Verma filed a lawsuit in July against the Tralf Music Hall in Buffalo, New York, after Dr. Verma fell to his death following a concert when he lost his balance sliding down the banister.

The estate claims that there must have been a sticky substance on the railing. The estate’s lawyers said that since alcohol was served at the concert, the promoters should have known to take extra safety precautions for banister-riders.

MUSICAL CHAIRS INJURIES Robin Earnest, 46, told an Arkansas claims hearing that she broke two fingers and was forced into “years� of surgery and physical therapy over a game that was part of a class at the College of the Ouachitas in 2011 and demanded at least $75,000 from the state. The July hearing was dominated by a discussion of the proper way to play musical chairs because the instructor had ordered three students to contest one chair–with Earnest asserting that everyone knows it would be two chairs for three people.

NEWS THAT SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE “Green-fingered residents� can show off their hard work each year at the Quedgeley Show in Gloucestershire, England, entering arrangements of colorful, plump garden-grown vegetables. However, attendance has been off in recent years, reported the Western Daily Press, leaving the show’s future in doubt–until organizers announced that this year, to increase the number of entries, supermarket-bought vegetables could be submitted.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Judge Roger Barto, of Waterloo (New York) Village Court, was convicted in August of staging a fake assault on himself to convince doctors to prescribe him pain medication. Officers arriving at the scene found Barto lying on the ground with a shattered porcelain toilet tank lid nearby from (he said) being smacked on the head by a mugger. However, doctors found an apparent flaw in Barto’s ruse: He had forgotten to actually hurt himself during the “attackâ€?–as medical personnel had found no mark, cut or bruise anywhere on him. â–

CHRIS D’ELIA – Star of NBC’s Undateable and Whitney, comedian Chris D’Elia will perform at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC). Sometimes Less Is More We recap this summer’s best and worst flicks

T

he summer movie parade began with Furious 7 and stumbled into a crawl with Hitman: Agent 47. In between was one of the best summer movie seasons in years. As we all head back to school, here’s a final recap of the summer of 2015.

THE BEST George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road was the unbeatable game changer, a muscular, down and dirty spectacle that had smarts as well as how-did-they-do-that-and-not-getkilled action sequences. On the quieter but no less brilliant side, the Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy showcased extraordinary duel performances by Paul Dano and John Cusack and stands tall over most rock bios. While overlong but still needing more time to tell its story, Straight Outta Compton has some of the most electrifying scenes of the year. Like Love & Mercy, it tells an amazing story and provides yet another guarantee that Paul Giamatti will be up for Best Supporting Actor at Oscar time. There was also the compassionate, low key, Golden Years of Sherlock drama Mr. Holmes, starring the incredible Ian McKellen.

SLEEPERS Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck gave controversial comic Amy Schumer a solid vehicle but it was her co-stars (Bill Hader, Lebron James and John Cena) who really tore it up. Few were expecting actor-turned-writer/director Joel Edgerton’s film debut The Gift to be anything special. It found an appreciative audience with its subtle chills and focus on character.

UNDERRATED Cameron Crowe’s Aloha became a punching bag for many, most of whom never saw it.

Its big ambitions were cut short by overly judicious trimming in the editing room. Flaws and all, it has some golden scenes and was an earnest love letter to Hawaii. Irrational Man is Woody Allen’s little seen, tight and provocative thriller (it’d make a great double feature with The Gift). Kudos to the studio for keeping the film’s biggest twists out of the trailer.

GREAT FUN Jurassic World stomped over everything in its path, and why not? It was as seat-gripping as you’d hope. The sight of Chris Pratt riding a hog alongside his domesticated raptors is one of the great movie moments of the year.

Then there’s Mission: Impossible–Rogue Nation, in which Rebecca Ferguson’s terrific turn nearly upstaged Tom Cruise hanging outside a jet. I was happy to be wrong about Ant-Man, which overcame a troubled production to become one of the best Marvel movies. It’s arguable whether San Andreas or Furious 7 was the dumber B-movie but both served up giant popcorn-sized thrills.

DISAPPOINTMENTS While Pitch Perfect 2 found an appreciative audience, all it proved was, like Ted 2, some movies really don’t need a second chapter. Avengers: Age of Ultron made mountains of cash but is the most underwhelming entry to star Iron Man. Yet, the two most crushing let-downs came from Sci-Fi, as the well intentioned but underwhelming Tomorrowland and the rickety Terminator Genysis deservedly crashed after opening. While the former couldn’t live up to its poetic teaser trailer, the latter has the most absurdly, spoilerheavy trailer of the year.

DISASTERS Pixels and Fantastic Four were rejected by their fan base but the foul, fecal-scented odor of the new Vacation is potent enough to make Roy Wally role in his grave. Give yourself a high five if you

even remember that Hot Pursuit, Entourage and The Gallows were in theaters.

BRINGING THE SCARY Insidious: Chapter 3 wasn’t the best in the series but the thick scares, eerie atmosphere and Lin Shaye made it worthwhile. On the other hand, there’s only one Poltergeist, and it’s not this year’s limp, cop-out remake.

GREAT ANIMATED FILMS Shaun the Sheep Movie gave us another extension of Aardman Animation’s brilliance, while the engaging (if overrated) Inside Out scored big for Pixar. Whereas those films were art, Minions was merely a cartoon and nowhere near as heartfelt, funny or engaging as Despicable Me 2.

A movie overflowing with Minions was just too much. Even during the summer, sometimes less is more. ■

If only all the summer flicks were as good as Mad Max...

This community-sponsored event includes a 0.5-mile swim in Hulopoe Bay, followed by a 10-mile mountain bike-ride passing the La Ola Solar Farm and a scenic 3-mile run along the Manele Golf Course. Event organizers are offering Lanai residents a discounted registration rate of $75 for individuals and $120 for relay teams. Hawaii residents can register individually for $85, or with a relay team for $130.

It’s supposed to be good luck to fold 1000 origami cranes in a year. I’m giving it a try. Someone gave me a stack of fancy paper and whenever I have a minute I fold it into a crane. It’s very meditative, actually, and it occurred to me that this kind of activity might suit you, because of its low time commitment. Like I said last week, you need to generate bits of downtime; because finding or making a spare half hour on a regular basis is beyond you, I thought I’d suggest something like this, that you can squeeze into all the chinks in your schedule. I’m not kidding about this. If you don’t find some way to truly chill out during the gaps in your routine, it’ll be all gaps before you know it.

You don’t go nuts during the Full Moon like some other signs. Hell, it’s not like you need an excuse to go crazy. You’re half-mad at the best of times and that’s just fine, and you seem to operate according to your own unique cycle, anyway. For example, this week, you’re more likely to get more out of your particular brand of insanity than usual. Whether that translates to intuitive insights with practical applications, telepathic sex with your lover, or a flash of inspiration that leads to some brilliant new invention that finally makes you your million, I can’t say, exactly. Someday, they may be able to manufacture tiny robot mites that can crawl right into our brains and broadcast what we think to the whole world. While it might be interesting to have your dreams available for daytime playback, I doubt most of us could sanely withstand such a fundamental violation of our inner sanctums. You Sagittarians, who bristle when someone is too curious about your feelings, might especially have trouble. Hopefully, the day when our brains our invaded by nano-bots is still far off. However, you should prepare for some lesser invasions of your privacy this week, because they’re unavoidable. Just remember: it could be worse.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

It’s a good week to ponder imponderables. All those questions without answers usually drive you nuts, but as you’re more likely to be able to accept or laugh at them than usual, you could win yourself a little peace of mind while strengthening your sense of humor.

Anything that reduces the amount of worry in your life has got to be a good thing. Cool, now that you can stop freaking out about what happens when we die, or why someone doesn’t love you, you can focus on tackling problems that actually have solutions.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

You don’t respond well to authority figures, unless they’re backing you up. When they tell you not to do something you really want to do, your usual response is a hearty laugh and a “Go screw yourself,” then it’s all on.

In this case, however, more than one of your friends have independently approached you with the same emphatic suggestion. Maybe it’s best if you listen. This isn’t just your ass on the line; you’re risking a pair of friendships as well. These guys are just not going to be around to help you nurse wounds you acquired by ignoring their advice. Let people be offended by the fact that life’s not necessarily fair. Resist other people’s lameass strategies to reduce the amount of competitiveness in your life. They don’t want to compete because they can’t win. Tough shit. If they don’t like the way the game is played, they don’t get to change the game. All they get to do is not play.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Here’s the kind of situation you can expect this week: You’re about to enter some big meeting or pick up a hot date when you notice your deodorant just kicked out. On the one hand, it’s just B.O. But on the other, these stupid details matter, sometimes.

Don’t spend the entire time freaking, when one little thing could change your whole outlook and experience. It might be slightly embarrassing to ask to borrow someone’s deodorant, but so the hell what?

Just do it anyway. It’s far less stress in the long run.
