BIKING THE NEW AIRPORT ACCESS ROAD It was very nice to see about a hundred Maui bicyclists show up on the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 4 for a special opening of (part) of the new Airport Access Road in Kahului.

The nonprofit organization Maui Bicycling League convinced state and county officials to allow cyclists to ride the gleaming new stretch of roadway that stretches from WalMart to Hana Highway and will (eventually) allow direct access to Kahului Airport one hour before it opened to auto traffic.

“Our goal with this ride is to experience what it is like to bypass the congestion of Dairy Road along a roadway without traffic,” said Ceal Potts, Maui Bicycling League cochair, in an Aug. 1 news release on the ride sent out by Pedego Maui. “This is a one time opportunity–but we hope that it will highlight the importance of creating a bike path removed from the roadway along this route–such a path would provide a direct link between the Mokulele Bike Path and the Northshore Greenway, and effectively con-

Perhaps there’s hope for cyclists in Kahului after all.

MAYOR APPOINTS MONSANTO LOBBYIST TO HOUSING DEPT. In a move that’s sure to keep the county’s anti-Monsanto/GMO activists buzzing for months (but perfectly illustrates the very tight bonds that connect local government with big business), Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa has appointed Carol Reimann to be the new Housing and Human Concerns Director. Reimann, as you might have known, has spent the last two years as a lobbyist (“Community & Government Affairs Manager”) for Monsanto.

But strangely, Arakawa didn’t refer to Reimann’s most recent Monsanto work when he announced her appointment in the August issue of the county’s High Street Journal newsletter.

“That is why I feel very fortunate to have someone of Carol’s caliber accepting the position,” Arakawa said in his monthly “Message From The Mayor” column. “During her time with the Maui Hotel & Lodging

The Maui Police Department is finally dribbling out a few details concerning the Aug. 5, 2015 fatal shooting in Keopualani Park in Kahului. Since Aug. 6, the MPD has sent out a couple press releases, and there was an Aug. 7 press conference helped, but many questions remain.

According to the MPD, three officers (the MPD, as per their standard operating procedure, will not release their names) shot and killed Raymond Hodge, a 39-year-old AfricanAmerican male who's been on Maui for two years and who allegedly shot at them with a 9mm handgun. Though the Maui PD hasn’t identified the cops involved in the shooting, they did release three photographs (including the one above) of a police cruiser that appears to have been hit by gunfire.

The MPD news releases state that two officers first headed to the park at about 8:54pm (the park is across the street from the MPD’s headquarters) in response to a caller who warned of an “unknown male” who was apparently wearing a fake U.S. Immigration badge. We may never know why Hodge was allegedly doing this.

The first MPD news release says that when officers approached Hodge, he “became agitated and confrontational.” Then, after Hodge started walking away, he suddenly “removed a handgun from his waistband, turned and began firing in the direction of the officers.” At the press conference on Aug. 7, the MPD said the suspect’s gun was “registered to a business” (though they didn't identify it).

Incredibly, the MPD states that “During the exchange of gunfire, the male positioned himself towards the front of the officer’s patrol vehicle while the two officers sought cover behind the same patrol vehicle.” It was at this point, the MPD states, that a third officer arrived and also began firing at the suspect.”

The MPD also insists that once the suspect went down, “the officers started to immediately administer lifesaving efforts.” Though medics apparently arrived later and continued rendering aid, the MPD news release states, “the male suspect eventually expired at the scene.”

We know there was a lot of shooting because department investigators recovered about 50 casings, department officials said at the Aug. 7 press conference. The MPD

said that nine of those came from the suspect’s gun, with the rest coming from the guns of the three responding officers.

According to the MPD, the three officers shot the suspect 11 times in “numerous parts of his body.” What’s more, the MPD cruiser that was hit by gunfire (see photo above) was hit “by both sides,” meaning it was hit by rounds fired by both the suspect and the police officers.

The shooting investigation is ongoing.

See, that Tuesday morning bike ride was actually the only time cyclists will be able to cruise the new Airport Access Road stretch in safety. That’s because the road (which has been in development for many years) lacks a dedicated bikeway.

“We are glad that there is a shoulder on the new Airport Access Road, but ideally, there would be a free-standing shared-use path built into the Airport Access Road’s wide easement where bicycles, walkers and runners could safely travel,” said Saman Dias in the Aug. 1 news release. “By installing this short 2 mile link segment between the Mokulele Bike Path and the North Shore Greenway we would create a nearly 14 mile protected bike route–the longest dedicated bike route in the State of Hawaii. We would like to see that path added to the Central Maui Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan, as well as Bike Plan Hawaii so that it can become a reality in the near future.”

The call from local cyclists for a dedicated bike path isn’t based on aesthetics.

Kahului can be dangerous for cyclists, and the new Airport Access Road was a great opportunity to make things better.

“On average it is almost 15 times more dangerous for a cyclist to ride down Dairy Road than any other mile of roadway in Central Maui,” said MBL member Danny Boren in the Aug. 1 news release. “At one point, Hookele St. was called out in the Central Maui Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan as an opportunity for a safe non-motorized route around Dairy Rd., but since Hookele was built out before this plan was adopted no cycling facilities were installed, leaving this area of Central Maui devoid of a safe bike route.”

Still, a surprising number of county and state officials showed up for the bike ride yesterday morning. According to a press release Dias sent out a few hours after the ride, Maui County Councilmember Don Couch, Councilmember Don Guzman, County Managing Director Keith Regan, Chief of Staff Herman Andaya, County Public Works Director David Goode, County Public Works Deputy Director Rowena Dagdag and state Department of Transportation official Ferdinand Cajigal all showed up.

Because that’s all it takes to run the Housing and Human Concerns Department, right? Personal knowledge of and friendship with the company execs that build homes and condos that are, in the main, priced far in excess of the mean income level in the county? Well, when it comes to working with local developers and big business, Reimann is certainly experienced. And besides, what do social worker-types know, anyway?

The Maui Food Innovation Center at University of Hawaii Maui College is the recipient of the SBA Growth Accelerator Fund Competition. President Barack Obama announced the winners of the competition Aug. 4 at White House Demo Day. The competition, run by the U.S. Small Business Administration, recognizes entrepreneurship and innovation to create a diverse and inclusive small business community. Its purpose is to draw attention and funding to parts of the country where there are gaps in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The MFIC–one of 80 nationwide recipients–will receive $50,000 to support its Maui Accelerator Program (MAP), a business start-up program targeting women and minority-owned enterprises including Native and Hawaiian led business. MFIC was one of eight recipients that were selected by a special panel of the SBA’s Office of Native American Affairs for programs that serve Native American, Native Alaskan and Native Hawaiian populations. Additional recipients of the Office of Native American Affairs Special Prizes include Launch: Alaska; The ARK Challenge; Native Entrepreneur in Residence Program; Fresh Future Farm Inc.; Pioneer Business Incubator; ONABEN; and Alaska Small Business Incubator, LLC. The $50,000 award money will be used for the Maui Accelerator start-up program in a variety of ways; the funds

will go to creating a selective process to choose participating food companies; create a team of food industry mentors; and design a website for the program.

The money also will be used to develop an event which will culminate in a public pitch by the selected companies.

“The Maui Food Innovation Center is an important program that will offer both the training and facilities needed by local food entrepreneurs to build a small business,” said UHMC Chancellor Lui K. Hokoana. “We’re excited the project has been recognized nationally, and this additional award will increase learning opportunities for students.”

The Maui Accelerator Program will be developed in partnership with the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce, InnovateHawaii, Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB), MEO, Inc., and County of Maui. These organizations have been working together in the Business Development Alliance to sponsor training and events for entrepreneurs, such as the Made in Maui County Festival and MEDB’s StartUp Weekend.

“The partnership between the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce and the Maui Food Innovation Center is a natural because we share many of the same goals,” said MNHCoC President Doreen “Pua” Canto. “Mentoring the next generation of Native Hawaiian entrepreneurs will be easier with the support of the SBA Growth Accelerator Fund.”

Sal Nissan, a spokesperson for HeartSine, the defibrillator’s manufacturer, confirmed that the Zippy’s on Maui is one of the 10 locations receiving the devices.

“Ensuring that all of our employees and customers are safe while at our restaurant locations is a high priority for us, so placing an AED in several of our stores is just one more step we can take to ensure their safety,” said Paul Yokota, President of FCH Enterprises (Zippy’s parent company), in an Aug. 6 press release from HeartSine. “Our strong commitment to the safety of our communities made the decision to install HeartSine AEDs at our locations an easy one.”

According to HeartSine, the device– known as “HeartSine samaritan PAD 350P”–was designed for use in public areas. It can work on adults or children, is lightweight and apparently easy to use. It provides “easy to follow visual and audio prompts to guide the rescuer from pad application to shock delivery,” according to the company. Eventually, Zippy’s plans to install the devices in all of its restaurants.

“With 84 percent of Sudden Cardiac Arrests occurring outside of a healthcare setting, placing AEDs in restaurants like Zippy’s provides much needed AED access to the local communities, as well as those inside the restaurants,” said HeartSine Sales Manager Brian Duffield in the Aug. 6 press release. “We commend Paul and the restaurant chain for taking this important forward-thinking step.”

According to the restaurant chain’s website, Zippy’s is currently running a special promotion with Pepsi: “Come in to Zippy’s in August for an entry form, and you can get a medium Pepsi for only 99 cents with the purchase of any regular plate lunch,” states the website. The company will choose two winners–the first gets $5,000 while the “consolation prize” is 12 cases (432 cans) of Pepsi (which Zippy’s calls “a year’s supply” of the drink).

A single can of soda contains about 8.75 teaspoons of sugar. The American Heart Association recommends that women consume no more than six teaspoons of sugar a day while men can consume up to nine teaspoons of sugar per day.

News Of The Weird THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT Among the health and fitness apps for computers and smartphones are sex-tracking programs to document the variety of acts and positions, degrees of frenzy and lengths of sessions (via an on-bed motion detector)–and menstrual trackers aimed at males (to help judge their partner’s fertility but also her predicted friskiness and likelihood of orgasm). Several have chart- and graph-making potential for data (noise level, average thrust frequency, duration, etc.), and of course, the highlight of many of the apps is their ability to create a “score” to rank performance–even encouraging comparisons across a range of populations and geography. (Sociologist Deborah Lupton’s app research was summarized in the July Harper’s Magazine.)

Reuters reported in early July that a big loser in the nuclear pact between Iran and six world powers was (since all negotiators have gone home to sell the deal) the brothel industry of Vienna, Austria, which hosted that final round. PROFILE IN LEADERSHIP Maryland state Delegate Ariana Kelly was charged with trespassing and indecent exposure in June after she arrived at her exhusband’s home to drop off their kids and learned that his girlfriend was inside. According to police, she started banging on the door and ringing the bell repeatedly and, aware that her husband had a camera trained on the doorway, she faced it, exposed her breasts and shook them, one in each hand, toward the lens. Eventually, she dared an officer to arrest her. (The Washington Post reported that Kelly is a member of a legislative task force studying maternal mental health issues.)

A court in Lincoln, Nebraska, which had already sent Paul Boye to prison for at least 10 years for shooting his girlfriend, ordered him in June to cover her resulting medical

bills. The woman had taken a .22-caliber bullet, which left a scar cutting right through her tattoo reading “Happiness Is A Warm Gun.” (2) A task force of Benton, Arkansas, police and U.S. Marshals tracked down Tieren Watson, 26, in June after he had spent several days on the lam as a suspect in a shooting. When arrested, he was wearing a T-shirt reading “You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide.”

WAIT, WHAT? Mine worker Joshua Clay claimed in a lawsuit that a foreman had twice taunted him for complaining about conditions–by restraining him and spray-painting his testicles white. Clay filed against Kielty Mine in Mingo County, West Virginia, in July, alleging that the company had forced him to work on the dirty side of a coal-dust conversion machine -- a practice forbidden by federal regulations–and that when he complained, he was subjected to off-the-books discipline.

INEXPLICABLE A KPHO-TV news story in Phoenix featured a local doctor advising expectant mothers against “tweaking” the result of home pregnancy tests. Some women, apparently, had discovered the magic of “Photoshopping” the pink reading on the home test’s strip–to take a faint pink line (not a certified pregnancy) to make it bold (pregnant!). Although the doctor warns of the general hazard of “false positives,” the 415word news story does not explain how Photoshopping a not-positive reading into a positive one improves the likelihood of conception.

MANGOES IN THE NEWS Josefina Tometich, 64, was arrested in Fort Myers, Florida, in June, charged with shooting out the back window of Christopher Richey’s pickup. Richey had fetched a “perfect-looking” mango from the street in front of Tometich’s house, but Tometich insisted it was hers since it had earlier fallen from her tree. And in one of the most successful redresses of grievance in history, the Venezuelan government gave Marleny Olivo a new apartment in April. Only days before, as President Nicolas Maduro toured her neighborhood in Aragua state, she had hurled a mango at him with her phone number on it, hitting him just below the ear. The new president (a “man of the people”) called her, listened to her story, and ordered a housing upgrade.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS A 26-year-old carpenter, trying to break open an ATM at an ICICI Bank in Delhi, India, at 2:30am on July 8, accidentally locked himself in the tiny space behind it (used to service the machine safely) and phoned police to come rescue him. And a carjacker in Omaha, Nebraska, on July 16 commandeered a car from a woman at gunpoint and climbed in. But according to the woman, she is short and he was very tall, and after fumbling a bit trying to adjust the seat, he gave up (having driven only a few feet) and ran off. ■

Right now, Maui’s own Jesse Richman is kitesurfing the Great Barrier Reef’s 1,000 kilometers to help battle a devastating illness.

emember when a true test of endurance was measured by the ability to maintain hand contact on the prized car door longer than anyone else standing in the Ford parking lot? Now, replace the car with a gigantic kite and implode the asphalt parking lot into the expansive Pacific Ocean. Instead of your biggest concern being not trying to pee within the next 24 hours, it’s struggling to complete two marathons every day. Add winds faster

than those on Ho‘okipa, currents more stubborn than the myna birds loitering the roads and shadowy figures that literally want to eat you. Now, you must perform under all these conditions. For 10 days straight. Nonstop.

This may sound like an extravagant stunt sequence out of The Avengers, but it’s a challenge about to become a reality for a group of hardy athletes. On Thursday, Aug. 13 (assuming the winds were there), a group of 10 kitesurfers began trying to

earn their golden entry into the Guinness Book of World Records by undergoing a 1,000-kilometer voyage across Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

As impressive as the amount of physical exertion this endeavor demands, Kite The Reef is not a mere publicity stunt to showcase the athletes’ prowess on the waves. The biggest feat for the athletes participating in the Kite The Reef expedition won’t even be topping the current kitesurfing world record, which stands

at a current 826 kilometers. All of the money raised to accelerate the search for a cure for Motor Neuron Disease will be the star accomplishment of this expedition, the purpose for which Kite The Reef was founded.

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is the Australian counterpart of ALS, the illness that sparked a viral slew of Instagram and Facebook videos starring people dumping ice water over their heads. Same villain, just wearing two name badges. Just like the

ine their insides without harming them.

Zebra Fish may be hustling the research, but that doesn’t mean they pushed back the minute hand of MND’s ominous ticking clock. After diagnosis, the disease has a startling average remaining life expectancy of just 27 months. That’s just a little over two years, a length of time which may sound long to a prisoner beginning his sentence or a high school junior counting down each second to graduation. When it’s your allotted time left on Earth and you suddenly feel pressured to experience every single “normal” pinpoint on the society-constructed timeline of life, twenty-seven months feels like a nanosecond. That’s why the extreme measures taken to raise more funds; every dollar gathered helps buy additional equipment and push the project forward. That’s what the expedition members of Kite The Reef are motivating people to do.

Richman said he’s devoted to reaching the tip of his 1,000 kilometer journey, a sense of perseverance that’s rubbed off on others as $70,000 in donations demonstrates. The sport motivates Richman to endure for the sake of the expedition’s cause.

“Getting through this expedition is going to be hard,” Richman said. “I’m going to need to channel every bit of my determination and love for the sport, but I do feel like I have what it takes to make it.”

evil characters in horror flicks and Marvel comics, MND springs on its victims without any clear reason.

“Thinking of all the people in the world that wake up one day to find out they have ALS or Parkinson’s for no apparent reason and there is nothing they can do hits me hard,” Maui kitesurfer Jesse Richman told me last week. He’s a world renowned competitor who’s taking on the Great Barrier Reef with the nine others.

Richman is right about the victims’ lack of options. While he was referring to the nonexistent cures and effective treatments for MND, sufferers literally can’t do anything. Imagine not being able to walk from your living room to the kitchen or swallow a spoonful of soup. You can’t even inhale oxygen, the body’s most basic function. All you’re maybe left with is a fighting spirit, which is hard to maintain when even the world’s top doctors are shrugging in confusion.

The ambiguity of the disease doesn’t mean people have to succumb to circumstance.

Dr. Nick Cole, a founder of Kite The Reef, is allowing a beam of light to reflect on his research and bounce back optimism into the public’s eyes. Richman’s own were affected.

“Visiting the research lab here in Sydney has given me hope for those people with these ruthless diseases,” he said.

For a disease that inspires so much cynicism, you’d think the components of a mad scientist’s laboratory such as life-size incubators or assistants infused with artificial intelligence are to credit for Dr. Cole’s success. In fact, it’s not even bigger than your thumb. The possible savior of a growing epidemic bears the closest resemblance to the guppies at your local pet shop. It’s a tiny creature known as the Zebra Fish.

“The biology of a Zebra Fish is surprisingly similar to a human’s,” said Alex Unsworth, a kitesurfing friend of Cole’s and co-founder of Kite The Reef.

This may be the only time that statement will sound comforting. Unsworth claimed that it’s much more likely to find a cure in a shorter amount of time with the Zebra Fish, which are expediting the speed of the science project a “hundred times faster.”

The transparency of the genetically modified Zebra Fish contributes to the ease of the research. Unlike traditional test subjects like mice, which are often killed in the research, the see-through characteristic of Zebra Fish allows Cole to “poke and prod” and exam-

from any amount of money or fame,” he said. “Following through and doing what you love is one of the biggest things in life.”

Richman isn’t the only Maui native supporting the MND cause through this water sport. Kitesurfing photographer John Bilderback enlisted as support crew. He’s also a member of the Mai Tai kitesurfing group, which periodically meets throughout the world, including right here on Maui. Cole is another regular attendee, as

It’s derived from a sense of fulfillment earned from completing many personal goals he deemed challenging. An experience that especially struck Richman as memorable was riding Jaws, one of his “biggest childhood goals.”

“That feeling is one of which I can’t get

well as Susi Mai, co-founder of the group and the sole woman participating in the Australian voyage.

It’s also interesting to note that the man whose record the expedition team is trying to outdo is on the trip himself, Dr. Nick Levi.

“I feel like everyone is prepared and knows what they are getting into,” Richman said. “We are going to have many challenges ahead; team work, perseverance and a bit of luck will hopefully get us through.”

Although the 10-day tour calls for a strong team mentality, each individual will cross 1,000 kilometers of the Pacific Ocean if successful. This isn’t a relay. The kitesurfers will be there to push each other, but only mentally. It’s up to each expedition member to summon their individual will and imprint their names on that Guinness Book of World Records page.

Of course, “It is nothing compared to the hardship that MND patients face,” Cole said in regards to the expedition’s physical demand.

To soften the toll the trip will have on the athlete’s bodies, increased training was imperative. Richman said his main focus was turning the knob up on endurance training. He continued to share that he and his crewmates dedicated a generous amount of their time towards selecting the most comfortable set of gear for “the long haul.” Richman detailed exactly what will be getting him through until Aug. 20.

“In the end I’ve decided to ride my favorite kite, the Naish Pivot, and then switch between two boards: the Naish Dub 134cm and the Naish Skater 4’10”,” he said. “The gear that I take out there has to be extremely comfortable because 10 straight days is a long time on the water.”

Days and hours spent prepping physiologies to peak performance and choosing gear that can best withstand the water’s impact will be exposed either as a success or a failure when the Great Barrier Reef, one of the most formidable territories on Earth, becomes the testing ground for the ten kitesurfers.

Why was a place attached to an adjective like “formidable” designated as the location of a feat already so arduous that almost no inhabitant on Earth save Olympians could actually consider attempting it? That’s because beauty always overrules logic. Unsworth’s reasoning sounded his agreement with that sentiment.

“The Great Barrier Reef is iconic locally,” he said. “The location is unspoiled and unchartered. About three years ago, we flew over that section and it’s just so incredible. We thought that one day we got to come back to it.”

But now the unavoidable question pops up in your mind after you dig deep enough into a story: Why? This is all an incredible act of kindness and the reef is gorgeous and maybe one day all this will make for an inspiring account about raw courage and perseverance. But really, why are these athletes willing to collide into a deadly set of waves or the mouth of a Great White Shark?

For Richman, the expedition was not just a charitable act attractive to the thrill seeker in him. It was something he had to do.

“If you have the power to do something and make the difference, I think of it not as an option but more so an obligation,” Richman said. “I’m doing this for all the people who can’t.”

The rest of the crew apparently felt the same after witnessing family members suffer from Motor Neuron Disease. As expected of professional athletes, they weren’t satisfied with being the spectators.

They had to be the participants. Richman summed up that intense need to help others in a brief sentence, fit to conclude a motivational TED talk.

his Wednesday, Paia Bay Coffee will be open for dinner. That may not seem like huge news, but they’re slowly rolling out their dinner hours, and next week will add Wednesday night to their Thursday, Friday and Saturday line up. Dinner at their little bohemian eatery is simple and delicious Mediterranean fare and you can BYOB. Their open courtyard layout has lots of little nooks and crannies, is filled with plants and at night it glows with string lights. For breakfast and lunch, you order at the cashier’s stand, but at night it’s sit-down service.

Paia Bay Coffee started as a little coffee house, as the name would imply, behind the Puka Puka building. Owners Danny Keezil and Josh Waite were looking to fill a coffee niche they discovered while working in construction.

“Danny and I were doing the renovation on the Puka Puka building and that little spot became available,” says Waite. “We came up with the idea that it was actually really hard to get a decent cup of filter coffee anywhere. We thought, it can’t be that difficult. I did a bit of research and came up with our house blend.”

Waite then fine-tuned the coffee to his taste.

“A lot of filter coffee tends to be French roast,” says Waite. “It’s really dark burnt taste really wasn’t what I wanted. I was looking for something full flavored, but not burnt; what I remember from Europe. Kind of an Italian chocolatey, rich cappuccino that you can get anywhere in Europe, but couldn’t ever find here.”

Their coffee blend is exceptional and available only in light and medium roasts.

“We have our house blend which is our own unique blend which we have roasted at Maui Oma, it’s Nicaraguan, Brazilian and Sumatran,” says Waite. “Then we have our espresso which uses Caffe Vita, a small roaster

from Seattle. We also have our 100 percent Maui-grown Moka Peaberry which is also roasted at Maui Oma. We don’t serve dark roast at all. We started off with the idea of doing coffee then it became evident that we could start doing food as well so we expanded into that. Now we’re starting the whole evening menu as well.”

They moved the cafe from the Puka Puka building to downtown Paia right behind the San Lorenzo Bikini store on Hana Highway.You can enter from the alleyway facing the Chevron gas station or through the bikini shop (if it’s open).

Waite’s After Dark menu starts at 5:30pm and features tapas, skewers and side dishes. I planted myself there on a Friday night with a group of friends, a bottle of champagne from the Wine Corner and we got down to business.

The coconut soup with steamed mussels was dreamy. The warm, creamy, saltybut-sweet broth was a great way to start the night. We also tried the peppered cashews, marinated olives and the Mediterranean tasting plate from the small plates menu. The skewers with salmon, lamb and salt-crusted shrimp were also scrumptious, and just $7.50 for two.

Skewers also are offered in chicken, beef or all veggie. The grilled Halloumi cheese in a pita stuffed with salsa and salad was the sleeper hit–we could’ve ordered more of that to take home that night instead of fighting over bites.

“We did not do evenings at the Puka Puka building,” says Waite. “Our lease was really strict about what we could do. We were not open in the evenings ever. It wasn’t really an option. And that kitchen was half the size. Our new kitchen is tiny as well but over there was even smaller. Basically, when we moved in the new space the landlords were really keen on having an evening restaurant going. Because of our limited space I came up with the idea of getting an Asian grill and doing the skewers. I’m from England, and spent a lot of time in the Mediterranean growing up. I kind of based the flavors out of that experience.”

The breakfast and lunch menu continues to evolve but they still steam their organic eggs, bake their own croissants fresh and make a killer cup of coffee. Mornings start at 7am daily.

“The backbone of our breakfast is the eggs, which we steam on the espresso machine,” says Waite. “We were definitely one of the first people to be doing this on the island. The Health Department was okay with it, so that was cool. The menu keeps expanding a bit, but stays fairly similar. We just have been refining it over the years, as you do. Things have just gotten better food-wise. I’m really looking forward to getting the evening thing going.” ■

With Friends Like These...

Joel Edgerton’s ‘The Gift’ is a great little thriller ★★★★★ Rated R / 108 Min.

H

ow much are we like the people we watch in movies? This queasy thought popped in my mind early into The Gift, Joel Edgerton’s very impressive debut as a writer and director, as well as co-star. Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall play Simon and Robyn, a successful but unhappy couple dealing with the heartache of recently losing a child. They move to a new town, where Simon lands a plum job.

A random encounter with an old childhood friend, named Gordo (Edgerton), initially creates an awkward new friendship, until Simon comes across as too weird and needy for them to deal with.

One of my favorite thrillers is With a Friend Like Harry... from writer/director Dominic Moll. That 2001 film had a different approach and overall point but a similar hook, with an old acquaintance reappearing decades later and forcing himself into the life of a former schoolmate. Harry had no on-screen violence but still terrified me, playing like a diabolical What About Bob. While The Gift is inferior to Harry, it’s a refreshingly smart, carefully constructed thriller.

A key moment is when Robyn defends Gordo, stating that she can often come across, in her way, as awkwardly as he does.

There are unsettling but thoughtful questions raised on whether friendships have an expiration date, what the limits of social niceties are and how far we extend friendship to someone who isn’t a friend, but acts like one.

While there are some nice supporting turns from veteran character actors, like David Denman (he played Roy on The Office) and Wendell Pierce, this is mostly a three-character drama and the three leads are excellent. Bateman, in particular, gives one of the best performances of the year. Aside from his under-appreciated cameo in State of Play, Bateman rarely gets the opportunity to perform outside of comedy and it’s stunning to see how many nuanced layers he brings to Simon. Hall is a treasure in any role, though she makes Robyn especially touching, when the part could easily have been played as a victim.

Edgerton must have gotten tired of waiting for a great American film role to come his way and just decided to make one for himself. He’s a hard working Australian actor whose good notices in Animal Kingdom only lead to forgettable roles in notable movies (like Baz

Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby) or leading parts in failed projects (like the remake of The Thing). Edgerton plays Gordo’s quirks and oddball appearance with too heavy a hand (making the character’s presence too obviously a cause for concern) but, like his co-stars, finds rich opportunities to dig deep and surprise us.

The Gift begins so perfectly, with such a strong grasp on character, mood, meticulously framed visuals, it’s disheartening that the end result isn’t better. Instead, it kept me riveted but falls short of the richly psychological set-up. There are far too many conveniently placed lines of exposition in the dialogue, forcing the

plot points rather than gradually revealing them. Adding jump scares and a fake-out dream sequence is another mistake.

The big twist at the end is easy to see coming but still satisfies, as it greatly raises the stakes of the characters and their established relationships.Yet, the movie is at its best when we’re kept in the dark, pondering whether Gordo is harmless or a genuine threat.

Our alliances to the three main characters alter over the course of the story but we’re always meant to sympathize with them and do. At different times, I wondered who I related with the most, which is one of the creepiest things about this mostly satisfying, adult-minded sleeper. ■
