HOW LOCAL GOVERNMENT IS DEALING WITH EMPLOYEE PARKING IN WAILUKU TOWN

LYNN DECOITE SUCCEEDS THE LATE MELE CARROLL On Feb. 18, Maui House Rep. Mele Carroll passed away. She had recently resigned from office, citing health reasons. The next day, Hawaii Gov. David Ige finished the search for a replacement by naming Molokai farmer Lynn DeCoite as Carroll’s successor.

“I thank the House District 13 Nominating Committee for forwarding three outstanding individuals for consideration and for working so quickly to get the names to me,” Ige said in a Feb. 19 press release from his office. “It’s important that the residents of this district are represented without delay. I’m confident Ms. DeCoite knows the issues facing the district and will listen to her constituents to address their concerns. She has deep roots in the community and is committed to overcoming the challenges by forming partnerships and working collaboratively.”

The district includes East Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kaho‘olawe. Thirteen people put in their names to succeed Carroll after she resigned last month, and of those a Democratic Party selection committee chose three candidates to submit to Ige: DeCoite, environmental activist Lucienne De Naie and Molokai invasive species official Lori Buchanan.

According to the governor’s news release, DeCoite lives in Ho‘olehua on Molokai. She’s an owner of L&R Farm Enterprises and R.J.’s Snacks as well as coowner of the V-8 Ranch. “In 2012, she won the First Annual Kaanapali Fresh Best in Show, and in 2007 she won the Maui County Mayor’s Small Business Award,” the news release states.

Since 2012, DeCoite has also been a member of the state Board of Agriculture, but the news release states that she will resign that post.

We’ve received a couple letters to the editor from residents lately in response on our recent coverage of the Wailuku Town parking enforcement and proposed parking meters. The writers asked us what was up with state and county government seeing to their own employees’ parking needs–especially considering that commercial businesses in Wailuku Town are under pretty strict rules to provide parking for their own employees and customers.

There have actually been a few improvements in this realm, according to county planner Erin Wade and consultant Andrew Miller’s Wailuku Town Parking Study, which was last updated in 2013.

The “temporary” parking lot at the site of the Old Wailuku Post Office added a net 14 new spaces for county employees, according to the Parking Study.

Wade also said the county is planning a new county employee lot near the Bailey House Museum. If the county ever manages to build their proposed new office complex– which will sit on the old Post Office–that will include even more employee parking.

According to Wade, a recent survey of county employees found that less than five were still using the Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot. The vast majority of users there are presumed to be state employees who work at the State Office Building and Hoapili Hale (the courthouse), but that’s actually a matter of conjecture.

“We believe our original parking demand estimates for State of Hawaii employees may have been understated,” Miller wrote in the Wailuku Town Parking Study.

“It appears the employee information we obtained during our initial analysis only included State employees housed on the State campus itself, and may not have included State employees housed in leased office space off-campus.”

This is obviously a problem, though it’s clear to county officials that people who work for the State of Hawaii are using a lot of Wailuku Town’s parking spaces. “The majority of the on-street and municipal lot parking is being taken up by State employees,” Wade told me. “We haven’t gotten a lot of traction with the State to collaborate on expanding their parking facilities (or leasing existing parking for their employees) until recently.”

The recent action Wade is referring to is Senate Bill 142, introduced by Maui Democratic Senators Gil Keith-Agaran, Roz Baker and J. Kalani English. The bill appropriates $250,000 for “the department of accounting and general services to develop a Wailuku state office master plan to address the shortage of space in the Wailuku state office building and old courthouse building.” That plan, it’s hoped, would deal with employee parking.

Though the state Judiciary has taken no position on the bill, Court Administrator Rodney A. Maile did say in his Jan. 30 testimony on the bill that they “would be open to participating in a discussion of a master state office plan for the area.” That’s because, according to Maile’s testimony, the Judiciary needs more space on Maui.

Currently, Hoapili Hale gives them about 80,000 square feet (and needs about $30.5 million in maintenance), and they lease another 13,300 square feet. “To consolidate operations and accommodate projected growth through 2030, the Hawai‘i Judiciary Facilities Master Plan recommends that 82,000 SF be added in the WailukuKahului area,” Maile wrote.

What’s more, the county is taking steps to ease parking restrictions on certain Wailuku

Town businesses. They also may institute a “Payment in lieu of Parking” program, in which business can pay a fee instead of building required parking. This fee would then go to fund additional public parking facilities.

Miller had recommended in his Parking Study that the county eliminate mandated parking ratios for restaurants, taverns/ clubs, retail shops and boutique hotels (the kinds of land uses “that are most desired” for the Wailuku Redevelopment Area).

Wade said this is happening.

“We are using the parking ordinance as an incentive tool now to bring in more dining and entertainment uses–waiving parking requirements for those uses,”

Wade said. “We’re also trying to expand and improve the sidewalk network to make it easier for the captive market to walk to their destination in town instead of drive.”

According to the revised Wailuku Redevelopment Area Zoning & Development Code provided by Wade, parking ratios have been eliminated for clubs, restaurants, food & beverage retail shops and open-air dining establishments, and relaxed for hotels. As for parking assessment fees, Wade said that’s still in the development stage.

“We haven’t touched cash-in-lieu yet but Mayor [Alan Arakawa] is expected to put the final parking management program in his budget for FY2016–coming out very soon–and we will address it then,” said Wade. “As soon as FY2016 is passed by [the Maui County] Council (and if the parking management program stays intact) we will take it to bid and get it moving.”

NEW NAT GEO WILD SHOW FEATURING LEILANI FARM SANCTUARY The new National Geographic WILD six-episode series Aloha Vet will feature Maui’s own Leilani Farm Sanctuary in its premiere episode.

Laurelee Blanchard, who runs the eight-acre sanctuary in Haiku, said film crews were there on Oct. 13 and Nov. 16. “The show is a takeoff on the British series All Creatures Great and Small,” Blanchard said. “It follows a veterinarian based on Kauai who flies his plane (which he built) around the Hawaiian islands to treat farm animals.”

Ohana Fuels’ “Fuel Up. Do Good” program raised more than $7,500 for Imua Family Services during October, November and December 2014. During the fundraiser, Ohana Fuels earmarked a portion of proceeds from sales of fuel at all Maui locations for Imua Family Services.

Proceeds from “Fuel Up. Do Good” will support Imua’s Early Childhood Development Program. The program, designed for children ages three to six, allows Maui’s keiki who do not qualify for special education services from the Department Of Education to receive therapeutic developmental services to address mild to moderate delays; the program allows many

children and families on Maui to continue to receive support after aging out of federally funded Early Intervention services.

“It was a pleasure to partner with a company like Ohana Fuels who believes so much in giving back to our community, utilizing their resources and presence in the community to recognize Maui’s ohana,” said Imua Executive Director Dean Wong.

“We are so thankful to everyone who purchased gas and supported this program.

Additionally, Imua Family Services’ Camp Imua Program hosted two car washes with proceeds to benefit a week long recreational camp for children with special needs.

Three Lahainaluna High students performed Shakespeare monologues during a Feb. 4 national competition that helps students develop communication skills and appreciate the power of language and literature. Maui’s 2015 first place winner, Stephanie Haro, will now vie for a win in the community-level competition on Oahu; if Haro succeeds, she will go on to the national competition in New York.

“The annual Shakespeare monologue competition is one of the ESU’s several programs that provides the aforementioned educational and cultural opportunities for the student,” stated a Feb. 18 news release from the West Maui nonprofit Theatre Theatre Maui.

“Lahainaluna English Teacher, Ryan Granillo, and Shakespeare Coach, Katherine Cloutier, who is contracted with Theatre Theatre Maui, have worked hard since last Winter to prepare the students for their school competition, and that work definitely shined in the performances of all three talented performers.”

Each year, approximately 15,000 students and 2,000 teachers participate in the competition. The ESU competition was designed to provide teachers with a performance-based program for the study of English Language

Arts and Shakespeare. It’s a school-based program serving grades 9-12. The competition has engaged more than 250,000 students since its inception in 1983.

The competition was judged by three active members of Maui’s drama community: Michael Pulliam, Gary Shin-Leavitt and Ute Finch. The judges evaluated each student’s performance based on criteria set forth by the ESU. Shin-Nelson said all three judges were very impressed with the students’ performances. He said Haro–and her Lahainaluna competitors, Kainoa Reponte and Konala Frohib Bagoyo–would be a welcome addition to Maui’s theater community.

Blanchard said that National Geographic contacted the sanctuary and asked if they could film an episode. She said part of the show features a pig they were caring for that had been blind for five years.

“Two episodes were produced, because after the eye surgery, the inflammation needed to subside before it would be known whether the pig’s eyes would function again or if the eyes had atrophied,” she said. “During the follow-up episode, the veterinary attended to more animals.”

According to its website, the nonprofit animal rescue sanctuary houses goats, rabbits, donkeys, cats, peahens, pigs, ducks, deer and chickens.

As for Aloha Vet, that show–which follows Kauai veterinarian Dr. Scott Sims–has been in development since last fall.

“We’re so excited to bring Dr. Sims’ unique story to the Nat Geo Wild audience, the perfect home for this special docuseries,” said Mike Aho, senior vice president at Shine America (which also produces shows like American Idol, Big Brother and Masterchef), in a Sept. 14, 2014 Variety story. “Dr. Sims is beloved in Hawaii, where he flies from island to island, rescuing animals of all sizes and taking care of them regardless of whether their owners can pay his fee or not.”

Blanchard’s reference to the show All Creatures Great and Small, which dramatized life at a country veterinary clinic in 1949, isn’t a stretch– especially when you read Nat Geo’s own publicity materials on the show.

“Nat Geo WILD cameras follow Dr. Sims through his busy days as the main local veterinarian in Kauai,” states a Jan. 5, 2015 Nat Geo WILD press release, reprinted at Thefutoncritic.com. “His phone never stops ringing, his hours are long and he rarely gets a full night of sleep.

With a heart of gold, Dr. Sims will help any animal that can walk, crawl, fly or swim.”

Aloha Vet begins airing on Nat Geo WILD on Saturday, Mar. 21.

News Of The Weird THE UNHONEYMOON A Saratoga Springs, New York, resort has begun accepting totally defeated husbands and wives for a relaxed weekend that includes divorce, bringing to America a concept already successful in six European cities.

The Gideon Putnam Resort & Spa charges $5,000 for a couple to check in on a Friday, married, but leave Sunday officially single (complete with all legal niceties and various resort amenities, including, of course, separate rooms). Even though the couple must be fairly level-headed to accept this approach, the facility manager expressed concern that since the resort also books weddings, the “uncouplers” might inadvertently witness difficult scenes. (Gideon Putnam has hosted four divorces so far, but, said the European

founder of the package service, “hundreds” of couples have used the services in Europe.)

WEIRD SCIENCE No organism has it tougher than the male South-East Asian coin spider, according to research reported by New Scientist in January. It’s somehow driven to mate with a female up to four times larger who is almost as driven to eat the male as to mate. After insemination, the male impulsively fights off other males’ attempts to disrupt the conception, and that means becoming a more nimble fighter, achieved, according to Matjaz Kuntner of the Slovenian Academy of the Arts and Sciences, by biting off its own genitals, since that organ comprises about one-tenth the spider’s body weight.

BECAUSE WE CAN Scientists at the University of California, Irvine (with Australian partners) announced in January that they had figured out how to unboil a hen’s egg. (After boiling, the egg’s proteins become “tangled,” but the scientists’ device can untangle them, allowing the egg white to return to its previous state.) Actually, the researchers’ paper promises dramatically reduced costs in several applications, from cancer treatments to food production, where similar, clean untanglings might take “thousands” of times longer.

POLICE REPORT The Knoxville (Tennessee) Police Department reminded motorists (via its Facebook page) that all vehicles need working headlights for night driving. Included was

a recent department photo of the car of a Sweetwater, Tennessee, motorist who was ticketed twice the same evening with no headlights but only flashlights tied to his bumper with bungee cords. And a forlorn-appearing Anneliese Young, 82, was arrested at a CVS pharmacy in Augusta, Georgia, in February after store security allegedly caught her shoplifting a container of “Sexiest Fantasies” body spray that, according to the packaging, “provides a burst of sensuality... as addictive and seductive as the woman who wears it,” “sure to drive any man wild.”

BRIGHT IDEAS The Jeju Island Korean restaurant in Zhengzhou, China, staged a promotion last month to pick up lunch tabs for the 50 “most handsome” people to dine there every day. Judging was by a panel of cosmetic surgeons (who were partnering with the restaurant) and, as contestant-diners posed for photographs, they were evaluated on “quality of” eyes, noses, mouths and especially foreheads (better if “protruding”).

THAT’S A LOT OF ROACHES The owner of the Kingsland Vegetarian Restaurant in a suburb of Canberra, Australia, apologized in February for the cockroach infestation that contributed to a $16,000 fine, explaining that, for moral reasons, he could not bring himself to exterminate living things–even cockroaches.

Less well-defended were Kingsland’s toilet, grease and food-storage shortcomings.

SORRY LADIES: HE’S TAKEN In yet another chilling episode of body modification, the otherwise handsome Henry Damon, 37, married father of two, appeared in January at the Caracas (Venezuela) International Tattoo Expo as Red Skull (archenemy of Captain America), who has somehow fascinated Damon for years.

As cannabis co-op owner Brian Murphy languishes in prison for selling medical marijuana, the state Legislature may finally legalize dispensaries

he modern American drug war is now deep into its 43rd year. Every year, the federal government spends between $20 billion and $25 billion on measures designed to combat the sale of illegal drugs like cocaine, heroin and marijuana. The results of these expenditures are a monument to failure: despite the fact that one in five inmates in state prison, and one out of every two inmates in federal prison are there on drug charges, the street price of illegal narcotics is dramatically lower than it was when President Richard Nixon first used the term “War on Drugs.” The only thing surprising about the 2014 announcement that five Nobel Prize winning economists had called for an end to the drug war was that there weren’t more of them.

Still, there is apparently hope. Over the last few decades, nearly 20 states have decriminalized marijuana, making punish-

ment for possession of a few ounces of it no worse than a traffic citation. Nationwide, medical marijuana use is becoming mainstream. Vanity Fair–hardly the glossy version of High Times, recently ran “A Nice Bowl of Weed,” offering 10 cultured rules for smoking a joint.

In 2014, a CBS News poll showed that 51 percent of Americans support the legalization of marijuana. A year earlier, the New England Journal of Medicine reported that 76 percent of the world’s doctors approve of its medical use.

Last month Rolling Stone even claimed that the drug war itself is “burning out.”

“For the first time since Ronald Reagan took office, the federal prison population is shrinking,” Tim Dickinson wrote in the magazine’s Jan. 8, 2015 story. Dickinson also noted that outgoing U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder–not exactly a friend of

civil liberties–has even taken the extraordinary step of lightening sentences for those convicted of federal drug crimes.

So what’s the problem with Hawaii?

Though Hawaii led the nation 15 years ago by legalizing medical marijuana, and there are about 14,000 medical marijuana users in the state, it has since fallen way behind the times. For yet another year, the Hawaii state Legislature is seeing heavy debate over a variety of marijuana bills, though their prospects as yet remain unclear. What is clear is that House Bill 321–a high profile bill that calls for setting up three dozen medical marijuana dispensaries across the state–would legalize a practice that earned Brian Murphy of the cannabis co-op Patients Without Time a year’s jail sentence, which he’s currently serving at Maui Community Correctional Center.

To say that Murphy has a lot of supporters is an understatement. In fact, there are currently 8,000 signatures on a petition asking Hawaii Governor David Ige to commute Murphy’s sentence, said Wade Holmes, a medical marijuana activist and friend of Murphy’s (see the petition at Patientswithouttime.com).

Sometimes, they can be too supportive.

According to Mary Whispering Wind, Murphy’s partner, a few recently showed up near the prison, drumming and chanting to show their support for Murphy.

Guards immediately moved Murphy out of his regular accommodations and into the “modulars”–four men in two-men cells.

It was a bad situation for a man in his 60s suffering from epilepsy and PTSD. “He didn’t know what or why that happened until he came out,” she said. “He was in there a few days. I guess it was

who require a little more compassion from us,” Souki said in a Jan. 21 House of Representatives news release. “I am speaking of those who need better access to medical marijuana. Yes, it is legal in Hawaii. But there is no legal access to it. The time has come to fix this contradiction.”

By my count, there are currently five bills that are still alive in the state Legislation that in some way ease access to marijuana (five other bills have been “deferred” and will likely not see any more action this session). Senate Bill 596 decriminalizes marijuana as a whole, reducing the punishment for possessing less than an ounce to a mere $100 fine–a civil infraction on par with a traffic citation. But it’s HB 321 that’s attracted the most attention.

Sugano’s experience goes to the heart of why we have cannabis co-ops like Patients Without Time in the first place. Hawaii’s legalization of medical marijuana back in 2000 was a landmark in the American legal history of pot, but it was just a first step.

Last year, the Legislature passed HCR 48, which created a task force to look into what a proper medical marijuana dispensary system would look like. The Task Force held 22 hours of meetings over six months, ultimately concluding that dispensaries were vital.

“This bill ensures that patients are safe by requiring laboratory screening for contaminants and for its component cannabinoids,” testified Rafael Kennedy, the executive director of The Drug Policy Forum of Hawaii, which took part in the

just a few people, but the jail takes these things very seriously.”

According to Whispering Wind, Murphy is taking “quite an array” of pharmaceutical drugs these days because he can’t take marijuana. “Of course he’s very anxious to get out,” she told me. “He’s in a lot of pain. But he says it’s been quite a learning experience: really a lesson that the guys inside need help.”

The way Hawaii’s medical marijuana law is written now, there are really only two legal ways for patients to get cannabis: grow it themselves or get their primary caregiver to do so for them. Any other method of obtaining even small quantities of marijuana–even if you’re a duly registered patient–is illegal.

Formed in 2004, Patients With Time–a small clinic of sorts in Paia–sought to help people get Blue Cards, the State of Hawaiiissued license to use marijuana, as well as grow their own plants. They served hundreds of patients suffering from a range of problems: cancer, glaucoma, AIDS, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s Disease.

“Over 90 percent of Maui County medical marijuana patients cannot meet their own medical marijuana needs on their own,” Murphy told MauiTime writer Cheryl Ambrozic in her Jan. 19, 2006 story “Taking it to the streets.” “Most medical marijuana cardholders are too sick or they do not have the knowledge or a secure place to grow their medical-grade marijuana. Patients with Hawaii State Medical Marijuana issued Blue Cards need to be able to have an adequate supply of their medicine.”

The Maui Police Department and Prosecutor’s Office saw things differently. Two years after our story ran, the MPD arrested Murphy and six others for selling illegal narcotics. Their two-year investigation included three months of wiretaps. The resulting prosecution took six years.

“This is drug trafficking,” Deputy Prosecutor Timothy Tate said at Murphy’s sentencing in December. “[I]t’s clear that this organization was organized crime and this organization does engage in violence as organized crime will do to protect.”

Never mind that Tate’s statement that PWT “engage[d] in violence” was little more than inflammatory rhetoric–Murphy’s Wailuku-based attorney Chris Dunn denied that Murphy had ever threatened anyone, and Murphy’s final no contest plea deal included no violence-related charges.

But at Murphy’s December 2014 sentencing, 2nd Circuit Court Judge Joseph Cardoza said something very strange.

“We’re not here to have a discussion about the appropriateness of the use of medical marijuana,” Cardoza noted, according to a Dec. 6, 2014 story in The Maui News, which covered the trial. “The Legislature has also spoken in terms of how that’s to be done. The Legislature has provided for a way that can be done within the bounds of the law and frankly without the kind of costs that were involved in this case.”

That’s strange because it’s pretty much the opposite of reality. In fact, House Speaker Joe Souki–one of HB 321’s 21 introducers, which also included West Maui Democrat Angus McKelvey–said as much when the Legislature opened this year.

220 pages of written testimony, much of which (pro and con) is highly emotional.

On the pro-side, the most heartfelt testimony came from Jari Sugano of Mi‘ilani.

She testified that her six-year-old daughter Maile has a rare form of epilepsy–one that was alleviated through medical marijuana.

But growing the plant, and then turning it into medicine for her daughter, proved a considerable challenge.

“As a trained agriculturalists [sic] for nearly 20 years and now “experienced” cannabis caregiver for the past year, I found the cultivation process extremely difficult,” Sugano said in her written remarks. “I endured multiple propagation failures, experienced timing (supply) issues and since Hawaii does not allow laboratories to test cannabis without penalty, it is virtually impossible to know what dosage Maile is on, or any other cannabis user for that matter. Without understand-

Likewise, the bill provides resources for education. This is important for patients who until now have had no one who can help inform them about the differences between strains, and the indications of their particular conditions. It is also important because educating the public about medical cannabis is a hugely important part of insuring [sic] that medical cannabis is not used accidentally by unauthorized people or diverted for use by people without a qualifying condition.”

As you might expect, law enforcement opposition to HB 321 and other similar bills has been considerable.

“As a recent robbery on Maui has shown, people are willing to commit violent crime with the use of firearms for legal medication,” Maui Police Chief Tivoli Faaumu testified on Feb. 7. “That

puts families at risk when dispensaries not only have marijuana on hand, they will have large amounts of currency because banks will not accept accounts from the marijuana industry. This bill does not provide safeguards to prevent this type of crime happening near a residential area, putting families at risk. In the State of Colorado, each County has the power to choose whether or not to have dispensaries or marijuana producers.”

And that’s actually moderate opposition. Totally ignoring the very real problems that Jari Sugano mentioned in regards to converting marijuana into proper medicine dosages, the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office tried to insist that hardly anyone in the state needs help.

“As of December 2014, the State’s medical marijuana database indicated that there are 318 [emphasis in the original] registered medical marijuana patients—statewide—who are unable to grow their own medical marijuana (and do not have a caregiver who can grow it for them),” stated a letter from the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office. “221 of these patients are registered on O’ahu, 78 on Maui, 12 on the Big Island, 6 on Kaua’i, and 1 on Moloka’i. In light of this, the Department believes it would be completely unreasonable to mandate the licensing of 26 dispensaries statewide, and potentially mandate 30 producers statewide, for 318 individuals.”

There are approximately 14,000 medical marijuana users in the state. That a dispensary could help all of them with better, proper medicine seems completely lost on the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office.

In any case, the bill passed both committees on Feb. 17, and has since moved to the House Finance Committee.

Of course, even all this is behind the times. The trend nationwide is for full-on legalization–at least for marijuana, just end the miserable drug war. Four states (Colorado, Oregon, Alaska and Washington) and the District of Columbia have already done exactly that, and right now there are two bills in the U.S. House of Representatives that would, finally, end the federal prohibition on possessing marijuana and tax its sales much like alcohol, another moodand mind-altering substance.

“That’s why I say,” said Mary Whispering Wind. “Let the recreational guys pay for the medical research.”

Too bad none of this will help Murphy. According to Dunn, Murphy’s attorney, Cardoza rejected his recent motion to do the balance of his prison sentence at home with electronic monitoring equipment. “The rationale was based on health concerns for Mr. Murphy,” Dunn said. “He was also willing to pay for the electronic monitoring.”

But Dunn added that since his motion was based on “mostly anecdotal” evidence that Murphy didn’t like the prescription pharmaceuticals he was getting instead of medical marijuana, and that he had no documentation saying the treatment he was getting from prison doctors was harmful, the motion went nowhere. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news, visit: mauitime.com/news

Oh, gosh, there are so many. One was when the cast put together a full musical number. You rehearse and rehearse and then it finally all comes together and you all feel a great sense of accomplishment.

Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun is a piece of American musical theater history. Not only is the musical a piece of history, but the story itself is historical. It’s a great musical for the entire family. Young people will enjoy the music and the updated dancing while older people will enjoy the memories of the show from previous productions. What makes this production a bit unique is that the Maui OnStage Executive Director herself– Alexis Dascoulias–will play Annie Oakley (and her husband, Steven Dascoulias, plays Frank Butler, her love interest). We caught up with her to find out what attracted her to the character and if she really is good with a gun.

Disease of the Week Powerful acting really makes us dread Alzheimer’s Disease in ‘Still Alice’ ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 101 Min.

T

he early scenes of Still Alice induce dread, unspooling a series of moments that are small but devastating. Julianne Moore plays Alice Howland, a brilliant college professor whose studies of linguistics and legacy as an instructor are matched by her tenderness as a wife and mother. Her husband (Alec Baldwin) and children love her and, due to the way Moore plays her, so do we. Her career in academia, as well as that of her husband’s, is well-established and they live a comfortable life.

Then Alice begins to forget things. At first, it’s tiny details or names, until she goes for one of her extended jogs and can’t remember where she is. We know where this is going, which is what makes the introductory scenes so hard. It’s not fun to be a step ahead of your characters when you know the one you really like has early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Alice discovers that not only does she have the Alzheimer’s, but her age and deteriorating

memory indicate that it’s a unique form of the disease.

It feels like we’re in for what’s often referred to, not lovingly, as a Disease of the Week TV movie. Co-directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland approach the material respectfully, staying out of the way of the actors and not making the proceedings glossy or over-stylized. Yet their unobtrusive take on the material lacks directorial flair. The sad-sack music score doesn’t help, either. The third act takes some refreshing turns and even injects some nice touches of style (in one montage, the ingredients of a frozen yogurt franchise have never looked lovelier up close).

The power of Still Alice comes from the performances and its overall message–that we need to give those suffering from Alzheimer’s our patience, empathy and, most importantly, their dignity. A key scene, in which Alice movingly gives a speech about her rapidly deteriorating condition, reflects her anger at seeming “ridiculous.” The plight of anyone suffering from memory loss is universally felt, though the film makes Alice’s condition all the more immediate

since we see her life’s work, career and abilities fall away from her.

Still Alice is a sad film, but it’s so touching and beautifully acted that it transcends audience expectations of enduring a “depressing” movie (which it isn’t). Moore is a lovely, compelling and inventive actress who can push a little too hard in some roles. Here, we’re in her corner the whole way and absorbing every drop of the emotions she pours out.

Moore is a striking, hard-working and superb American actress and this is one of her essential performances.

Baldwin hasn’t been this warm and reserved on screen in years, delivering an endearingly vulnerable turn that contrasts sharply with his tough guy roles. I hadn’t realized how much I missed seeing Kate Bosworth in a major role; she’s

quite good and perfectly cast as Alice’s eldest daughter. The nicest surprise is Kristen Stewart, Alice’s youngest daughter, whose adaptable approach to her mother’s condition is especially moving.

Stewart isn’t particularly dynamic here but she doesn’t need to be. Instead, she provides Moore with a solid acting partner and finds truth in her character by appearing natural and unguarded.

Sarah Polley’s 2006 drama Away From Her is still the best depiction of someone suffering from Alzheimer’s I’ve seen. Julie Christie’s starring role and Polley’s poetic approach to the material remain unmatched. That said, it’s limited and rather insensitive on my part to compare the two. We need more films about Alzheimer’s, and I hope these we have inspire compassion and understanding. ■
