The bill “incentivizes” (Gabbard’s word) the hiring of veterans by allowing employers the option of not counting employees who already have Veterans Administration or TRICARE health coverage when calculating full-time employees as part of the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate. According to Gabbard, this will make it more attractive for employers to hire veterans.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the “Hire More Heroes Act” has appeared.

Help is on the way

So for those of you lucky enough not to work on Monday, Jan. 19, you got to take advantage of the fact that Haleakala National Park waived entrance fees that day in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “We honor Dr. King and the tremendous impact of his life and teachings on the world,” said National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis in a Jan. 14 park news release. “He moved hearts and minds through his words and actions. And his vision continues to inspire us to make positive changes in our communities.”

But if you had to work like some of us slobs, you can still enjoy the park–well, you can enjoy reading and commenting on a draft report concerning the park, which is a lot like actually visiting it, though without all that sublime nature and unspoiled wilderness to get in your way.

The National Park would like you to read over their new “Foundation Document”–a brief report that “defines Haleakala National Park’s core mission and significance, most important resources and values, and the interpretive themes that tell the park’s important stories,” according to a Jan. 16 park news release.

Park officials would really like the public’s feedback on the document, and will give you until Feb. 20 to get your comments to them.

The news release also outlined some upcoming public hearings on the document. The next scheduled hearing on it takes place on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 5-6:30 pm in Hana.

TULSI GABBARD SCORES BIPARTISAN VET BILL VICTORY It may not seem like much, but when you’re in the minority party, I suppose

even the tiniest legislative victory is something to celebrate in a press release.

Which may explain why on Jan. 12, the office of Representative Tulsi Gabbard, D–Hawaii, sent out a news release titled “Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Passes Bill to Support Hiring More Heroes.”

Of course that’s an overstatement–it takes more than a single representative to pass anything in the House–but it’s clear that Gabbard played an important role the passage of HR 22, the so-called “Hire More Heroes Act,” which passed 412-0 on Jan. 6, making it the first bill passed by the House in the 114th Congress.

Remember that Gabbard–who is also a military police captain in the Hawaii National Guard–didn’t introduce the bill–she just co-sponsored it (though to be fair, she was the bill’s first co-sponsor).

Congressman Rodney Davis, R–Illinois, introduced the bill, and while it’s not exactly a shining example of bi-partisanship (just five of the bill’s 118 co-sponsors are Democrats), a win’s a win, right?

“As we begin the 114th Congress, passage of this bipartisan Hire More Heroes Act, which focuses on empowering and employing our veterans, is the perfect tone to bring in the New Year,” said Gabbard in the Jan. 12 news release. “This legislation will help decrease the number of unem-

The room was not generally accessible to the public, and anyone who wasn’t a cop needed to provide identification and get a special escort through the station to get to the ostensibly public monthly Police Commission meetings. Needless to say, this had a chilling effect for anyone who wanted to see the commission in action.

On Wednesday, Jan. 21, the commission tried even something more radical–meeting in the Laulima Building at the University of Hawaii’s Maui College campus.

“The change in venue comes in response to an ongoing request from members of the public who say they would like commission meetings to be held outside of the Wailuku police station,” states a Jan. 15 County of Maui news release. “This meeting is part of a pilot program to encourage more public attendance.”

That’s great, but if the commission really wants to boost public attendance, they’ll start doing stuff like providing real opposition to the department’s annual requests for more militarized firepower.

Mele Carroll, in better days

tate Representative Mele Carroll, a Democrat whose district includes Haiku, Paia, Hana, Kaho‘olawe, Molokai and Lanai, is resigning from the state House of Representatives because of her health. A Jan. 20 news release from the state House of Representatives communications office offered a few details: “After consulting with doctors, contemplating her situation, and confirming with her husband and family, Rep. Carroll decided to resign due to her health,” stated the news release. “Complications from her previous cancer treatments have arisen in the recent months that now affect her quality of life and which may affect her ability to do her job. The time has come for her to address her health and spend quality time with her loved ones and closest friends.”

Carroll was chairwoman of the House Human Services Committee, but she resigned that post on Jan. 7, citing unspecified “health issues.”

Carroll has served in the state House since 2005, when Gov. Linda Lingle appointed her to the 13th District seat after Sol Kaho‘ohalahala resigned to take over as executive director of the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission. She was most recently re-elected in 2014 with an overwhelming 60.7 percent of the vote.

In the Jan. 20 news release, Carroll said her decision to resign was very difficult: “Making the decision to step down has been the hardest thing I have ever

had to do,” she said in the release. “It is a heartbreaking reality that I have to face. Serving in the State House of Representatives has been a truly rewarding experience. I am thankful that the people of the 13th District have trusted in me to represent them as their elected legislator. Every day that I came to work was a blessing and something I never took for granted. I cannot say enough about the dedication of people I have met in my journey through the State Capitol, they and my fellow legislators have become my family.”

Though mostly a loyal Democrat, Carroll strongly opposed Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s special session to legalize same-sex marriage.

Gov. David Ige has 60 days from Carroll’s resignation to choose a replacement from a list of three individuals submitted by the Democratic Party of Hawaii.

“While it is with deep sadness that I accept the resignation of Rep. Carroll from the State House, I fully understand and support her priorities regarding her health,” said House Speaker Joseph M. WHO WANTS TO LIVE IN A HEMP HOUSE? The first house in the state being constructed with hemp-based materials is being built on Maui. Architect George Rixey will open the home’s construction site in Kihei on Jan. 30., where the benefits of Hempcrete will be highlighted (the event is apparently media-only, so don’t bother showing up).

Hempcrete–one of several hemp building products–has many advantages: termites don’t eat it, it's hydrophobic, it’s mold resistant, it breathes, it's fire resistant and it has excellent insulating properties. Hempcrete is made from 12-15 feet tall hemp stalks that are dried and pulverized, mixed with lime and water to a consistency of paper mache, and applied like poured concrete. As the product dries to a solid, it pulls CO2 from the air, creating negative carbon footprint. Hempcrete takes the form of its container–in this case, the shape of wall frames that Rixey has designed.

In addition to demonstrating the use of Rixey’s hemp building products, State Rep. Cynthia Thielen and Denise Key of Hawaii Farmers Union United will be at the Jan. 30 event to speak about the many uses of industrial hemp and the progress of a bill in the State Legislature to allow hemp as an agricultural crop.

Industrial hemp has the possibility of becoming the next cash crop for Maui farmers–turning ag lands green again, without burning fields for harvest, according to Key, a Maui expert on industrial hemp. As a rotational crop, hemp removes petrochemical-based pesticides and toxins

from the soil. Hemp seed is a nutritious food and hemp oil pressed from seed is extremely high in omega-3 and GLA. And it is not psychoactive.

Key has been instrumental in getting a bill through the state Legislature to approve growing hemp on all the Hawaiian Islands. The state Legislature has approved experimental agriculture of hemp and is now considering allowing farmers to grow industrial hemp.

Hemp is a highly profitable crop, a nutritious food source, and is used to produce thousands of products, including paper, textiles, oils, automotive parts, personal care products and sustainable construction materials for building. Hemp seed, hemp seed oil and Hempcrete insulating building materials are marketable products; U.S. sales of various hemp products were $580,000,000 in 2013, according Hawaii Farmers Union United. But the prohibition on growing hemp makes it necessary for manufacturers in the United States to import almost all of the hemp fiber, seed, and oil that they use; industrial hemp is currently being grown in at least 30 countries including Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Romania, Australia and China.

If the U.S. changes the hemp laws, American farmers could provide the needed hemp at a more competitive price and Hawaii could help lead a growing movement to support U.S. production, according to HFUU. Maui author and educator Lindy Shapiro is running and biking across the state to launch Bottles for Change, a new school-based conservation initiative that challenges keiki to help reduce Hawaii’s plastic footprint. Shapiro’s coastal expedition will cover 750-miles across six-islands in 31 days. Named the holoHI (holo means to run or ride on), her journey began on the morning of Jan. 18 in Hilo.

Shapiro’s itinerary then takes her to Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai and Maui, where she will wrap up the holoHI on Feb. 18 with a celebration in Kahului.

Throughout the run, Shapiro will visit 20 schools statewide to spread the word about Bottles for Change (B4C), a new student-led conservation project designed to bring attention to the approximate 250,000 tons of plastic floating in oceans, destroying marine habitat and contaminating the water and food supply. Shapiro said B4C will be making school and community presentations to increase awareness and to encourage youth participation in the Bottles for Change Challenge.

Students participating in the B4C Challenge begin by finding an empty plastic bottle that has been abandoned or is headed for the landfill. This first bottle becomes the student’s “Bottle for Change.”

Every time they, or someone they know, chooses NOT to buy a plastic bottled beverage and uses an environmentally friendly alternative, they put the money saved into their “Change Fund.” Once

their bottle holds “$20 for Change,” they hand it in at a designated bottle drop (school office, teacher representative, community partner) to receive a B4C reusable water bottle and t-shirt, and to be entered into a raffle for great prizes. In addition to their Change Funds, participating students receive “bottle points” for the raffle every time they volunteer at a Hawaii Wildlife Fund or other B4C beach cleanup event, or complete a project from the B4C website; the campaign a collaboration with Hawaii Wildlife Fund, Island Air, LifeFoods and other local organizations.

Schools that complete the Bottles for Change Challenge will receive free environmental educational outreach programming, supplemental materials and will be recognized on the B4C website. Shapiro notes that this is just one example of the type of youth leadership and educational outreach programs that her Bodhi Education Project hopes to offer in the future. “Our ultimate goal is to build and sustain a leadership academy for integrated arts and sciences on Maui’s North Shore,” Shapiro said. “In addition to serving the Maui community, we plan to continue creating inspired educational and environmental programming like Bottles for Change that empowers youth leadership for positive, sustainable change statewide.”

Shapiro founded Bodhi Education Project in 2006. The nonprofit promotes awareness of the human experience and understanding of cultures as a means to allow people to connect with their world and, in turn, share responsibility in taking care of it.

Speaking about her physical commitment to B4C, Shapiro said, “I’ve been running FOREVER. Rain, shine, hills, flats… in sickness and in health…if you give me a day, I’ll find a way to run before the end of it. I don’t necessarily run pretty or super fast, but I manage to keep my feet untangled and find my way home. In the end, that’s all that really matters.”

Shapiro said she hopes the holoHI awareness campaign will inspire others to support vitally important conservation efforts. “Children are ‘beautifully relentless’ and have the potential to inspire us all to change, to grow, and to come together as a

Because Congress and presidents often change their minds, NASA recently continued to build on a $349 million rocket testing tower in Mississippi for a “moon� project that had been canceled back in 2010.

The now-idle tower sits down the road from a second rocket testing tower being built for its “replacement� mission–an “asteroid� project. Critics, according to a December Washington Post examination, blame senators who believe it smarter to keep contractors at work (even though useless) because, Congress and the president might change their minds yet again. Said a high-profile critic, “We have to decide... whether we want a jobs program or a space program.�

NASA’s inspector general in 2013 identified six similar “mothballed� projects that taxpayers continue to maintain.

DEATH OF PUBLIC RECORDS About 240 of the 351 police departments in Massachusetts claim their SWAT and other specialty operations are not “government� services, but rather not-for-profit corporate activities and are thus entitled to avoid certain government obligations. Even though their officers have the power to carry weapons, arrest people and break down doors during raids, these “law enforcement councils� refuse to comply with government open-records laws for civilian monitoring of SWAT activities. The latest refusal, by the 58 police agencies of the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, was filed in state Superior Court in December.

DIY POLICING A Seattle Times columnist suffered a “smash-and-grab� break-in of his car in October, but was brushed off by the Seattle Police Department and told simply to go file an insurance claim. However, he and his energetic 14-year-old daughter located the perpetrators themselves by GPS and called for police help, only to be chastised by the dispatcher, warning that they could get hurt. MOTHER OF ALL SURGERIES After 15 months of faulty diagnoses, Pam Pope, 65, finally got the (bad) news: a rare, slow-moving cancer of the appendix, “pseudomyxoma peritonei.� The malignancy was so advanced that her only hope was the removal of all organs that she could possibly do without. In a sixsurgeon, 13-hour operation in May 2014 at Hampshire Clinic in Basingstoke, England, Pope parted with her appendix, large bowel, gall bladder, spleen, womb, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix and most of her small bowel. She has endured massive chemotherapy, is on a nightly drip for hydration, and still remains frail, according to a December report in London’s Daily Mail.

BAD DAY When someone swiped the iPhone of Adam Wisneski, 31, on Jan. 2, he rode his bicycle to Chicago’s Shakespeare District police station to file a stolen-property report. He parked the bike inside the door, filled out the form, prepared to leave–and noticed the bike was missing. He told an amused officer he needed another form.

Officers on duty said perhaps a homeless man who was in the station took it and are “making an effort,� said Wisneski, to find it.

WHAT RESEARCHERS DO The natural enemy of the “hawkmothâ€? (for 65 million years) is the bat, but thanks to a recent study by biologists at Boise State University and the University of Florida, we know the reason why so many hawkmoths are able to avoid their predator: They signal each other by rubbing their genitals on their abdomens, which somehow mimics bats’ own high-frequency sounds, thus jamming the bats’ aural ability to detect the hawkmoths’ locations. he new year always opens with resolutions. With the start of a new calendar year, there’s that feeling that we need to improve ourselves or fine tune our rituals and routines to get where we want to be, in life and lifestyle.

Hopefully, it’s a moment of guilt-free reflection. But even if not, it’s really not that hard to get on the right track with so many professionals on Maui ready to offer their expertise and services.

In our 2015 look at Health and Wellness, we go in deep to find other people who’ve put down roots to create a better, healthier Maui by sharing their knowledge and skills. We take a look at the different ways to get to your goals, and taking it one day at a time.

HOW FAR INFRARED THERAPY MAY HELP YOU

F

blot the sweat off of your body to wick the bad stuff away and then shower directly after so you don’t re-absorb anything.

Hearing this, I headed to Spa Luna at the Maui Mall to try it out. Their brochure says that benefits include reduced inflammation, detox of heavy metals and the burning of 700 calories every 30 minutes. A European sauna will typically be around 220 degrees Fahrenheit, but an infrared sauna is effective at 130 to 143 degrees Fahrenheit. That you means you can sit for 30 minutes in an infrared sauna, versus around 10 or 15 minutes in a European one.

ar Infrared Technology may sound like something out of a science fiction movie, but it’s a billion dollar worldwide industry. I quizzed several health care practitioners that use infrared about how it works, and the answers ranged from “it penetrates the body deeper” to “it is good for detoxification.” Still, they left me more curious than convinced.

It’s difficult to pinpoint the benefits of infrared wavelengths, otherwise known as the wavelengths of light that emit heat.

You can’t see infrared light, but it’s real.

To find out more, I called Samana Benedetti, owner of several infrared therapeutic

cent wine dinner hangover as I closed the sauna door behind me. I had some typical existing aches and pains. Inside I heated up nicely, and after about 10 minutes my skin exhibited a light sheen as I felt drops of sweat down my back. I was a bit restless so I blotted off so I’d have something to do.

Ten minutes later I was dripping sweat on my book, and my aches and pains were annihilated by the constant warmth, though I might have felt a wave of nausea for a fleeting second. It felt like a day on the beach in Lahaina, without the ocean nearby, of course. The last ten minutes my pores really opened, and though the heat wasn’t unbearable I dampened the towels I brought in with me. It still felt really good, and would certainly do it again.

The infra red sauna at Spa Luna costs $25 for 30 minutes, and an additional $5 for another person. They have a shower right next to it that you can hop into right after. There are quite a few other locations around the island that have infrared saunas, like Enderbodies, Iao Acupuncture and Temple of Peace.

Still, I was curious about how it worked.

“It’s kind of magic,” says Benedetti, who said she’s always incorporated holistic philosophy into her treatment, believing the universe and living nature are stronger through interaction. “The one here at Spa Luna is the third one I have owned. I have

Of course, you can use infrared for an entirely different kind of therapy than simply eliminating toxins.

Doctor Sonya Hansen, an obesity specialist on Maui, is opening a new weight loss and fitness center in Wailea called Awazul that uses state of the art ozone and new far infrared technology. Hansen says she wants to change the way people approach obesity therapy. Her new awafit machines, infrared blanket and infrared treadmill–combined with juicing–are the keys.

Never heard of awafit? That’s probably because Dr. Hansen coined the term for her new machines, which she bought in Europe.

They’re basically a stationary bicycle mounted underwater and using infrared heat. Her vision is to fuse a medical approach to wellness without surgery, liposuction or lipofreezing, which she says can leave dimples on the skin.

“For me because I am a doc, I don’t want it to be a doctors visit,” says Hansen.

“I want it to be a club. I want it to be the opposite of a doctor visit. You come in work out and drink your juice. It’s viewing weight loss in a whole new way without it being painful.”

Hansen says her vision for weight loss is a lifestyle change, built on exercise and nutrition. The exercise machines are designed to increase your metabolism and help you excrete fat without counting calories. They can also help with restless legs and various toxicity issues.

“They don’t exist in the states, “ says Hansen of the machines. “I had to order these machines from Poland. It is developed by the Italian rehab doctor. Basically, he put a bike in a jacuzzi. He warmed up the water to increase blood flow. With Continued on page 15

modalities in her transformational day spa at Spa Luna. She’s also been training estheticians and massage therapists on Maui at her school for more than 20 years. Her Italian Body Slimming and toning treatment utilizes infrared that says it can take inches off, eliminate water weight and excess fat.

“The infrared treatments are Italian body toning treatments, and I’ve done them for over 10 years,” says Benedetti.

“You put them over an area of the body, like the tummy and one 30 minute session for example is like doing five hours of crunches. But the more exciting part, if that is even possible to get more, is there are eight infrared pads that are four inches by three inches and wherever you place the pads, its has the ability through heat to go to the adipose layer where the cellulite lies it will heat up the fat and liquify it so it goes through the lymph system and the blood stream and then you expel it as waste.”

Benedetti says that the process works similarly in the infrared sauna. She says she has bought three of the infrared saunas and even has one at home. It helped her recover from her own health issues, and she says that it penetrates to deep layers of tissues, gets to toxins and allows the body to shed them. From her own experience, she recommends drinking two glasses of water in advance, sweat it out in the infrared sauna,

one at home. In 2002, I was diagnosed with a rare disorder and Western doctors didn’t have a clue. So I had to research for myself and found out about the infrared sauna.”

The Chinese were early adopters, realizing the chi in the body generates heat.

Three thousand years ago, they practiced palm healing, using the heat and energy from your hands, which was basically an ancient form of Reiki. The basking in the sun is one of the best free forms of infrared therapy, but the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight can cause serious skin damage.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) website has several published studies and physician papers that talk about infrared.

Dr. Richard Beever’s article in the Canadian Family Physician’s Journal published on the NIH site explains the heating process.

“Traditional saunas use either wood stoves or 220-V heaters to heat the air to approximately 85°C, which then heats the occupant, mainly via convection,” it states.

“Some people find this heat uncomfortable.

In contrast, Far Infrared Saunas (FIRSs) heat to approximately 60°C, providing a more comfortable and relaxing experience. They utilize 120-V infrared elements, similar to the infrared warmers on neonatal resuscitation beds, to radiate heat with a wavelength of around 10 µm infrared waves.”

The NIH site also refers to a study by doctors Fatma Vatansever and Michael R. Hamblin. “Technological advances have provided new techniques for delivering FIR radiation to the human body,” states that study. “Specialty lamps and saunas, delivering pure FIR radiation (eliminating completely the near and mid infrared bands), have became safe, effective, and widely used sources to generate therapeutic effects. I was always terrified of hot yoga, having an aversion to the idea of being heated up while working out, but Infrared therapy with Vinyasa flow yoga piqued my interest. I figured I could handle an hour. On a Tuesday morning I took my sore muscles to a class taught by Jacob at the Paia Shala.

They say that hot yoga is really great because you heat up your muscles, so you get really flexible. While I don’t know that I felt more flexible, I did seem to be able to expand into all the poses to the best of my abilities. The heat was never a distraction.

If you try this, bring a towel because you will sweat. At one point in class, the sun rose over a rooftop and came through the window, blessing me with a bit of extra heat. The class was the perfect combination of therapeutic wavelengths and challenges from moving through yoga asanas. It was certainly worth the $18 drop-in fee. ■

Why not just search on Yelp or Google?

A quick overview of the psychics and astrologers on Yelp was limiting. It gave me a few useful results, like Haiku Helen–a well known palmist on Maui–but with just one review. The top reviewed entry in this category was Warren and Annabelle’s, and while they do have a psychic dove, most of their magic is sleight of hand. None of the listings included pricing or extended information.

“What makes this network unique is that we incorporate high level spiritual life teachings from all of our different walks of life, and bring not only a holistic element but also a metaphysical one,” says Leianna. “We believe many people who come to Maui are seeking transformational and healing experiences that could potentially change their lives for the better. Our group of experienced and dedicated practitioners can work in depth individually with these people.”

For individuals looking for Maui retreats, the portal is like a one-stop-shop to compare different locations. Healing centers, cleansing, farm stays, colonics and sanctuaries are listed with their lists of available services. The community events category is still in progress as it links out to the Facebook page, with no events yet.

“The site has currently has 8 practitioners, and we all are listed on the website,” says Leianna.”The list will keep growing for a bit.

What helped me choose the practitioners was by asking myself questions such as, “What would a great holistic and metaphysical net-

work of healers and services on Maui look like? Who would we want on our team to work synergistically in supporting individuals in their transformation?” I also felt a divine hand guiding the right people to me for the network. We have many talented people in our network, and knowing all of them personally, I can say they can provide something unique, sometimes unusual, but nevertheless a service that can be truly difficult to find in the world.”

The ideal client is someone who is ready to have life-changing and transformational experiences. Someone who is willing to go be guided and led on the path to healing themselves more deeply. The focus is on healing, but the ideal result is more happiness.

he recent opening of Wailea Pharmacy, an independently owned and operated pharmacy, sounded like an opportunity to ask our local neighborhood pharmacist some pressing questions. Shelley Seideman and Farah Mikhail, who own it, share a vision of a pharmacy that offers personalized customer service and a full spectrum of products from pharmaceutical to holistic. FM: It’s very common for people to come to the pharmacy seeking relief when they’re not feeling well. Many products are avail-

t’s easy to run into a fitness rut. Whatever your workout routine, it’s still a routine, and we all know they can get predictable.

But there are ways to mix it up. You can find specialized workouts at studios island-wide.

These wise studio owners and teachers–like the three highlighted below–also use their spaces to host workshops, challenges and support the wellness community by building networks of health and wellness, no matter your objective.

When I first starting pole dancing, there wasn’t a certification really, at least, not one that was accredited. I trained under some amazing instructors and studios, including Fawnia Dietrich, the “founder of pole dance fitness,” and at Bobbi’s Pole Studio in Australia, which holds the Australia Pole Fitness Competition every year. I’ve pole danced all over the world! .

As a studio owner, I can’t be doing the same thing over and over. I gotta keep getting inspired, too. I strive to do things that help me to grow. You start as a teacher, then open a studio, then do workshops or travel. You constantly do things to change the field to stay on the path. I didn’t have kids, so growing my studio is what I do. I always want to be a service to visitors and locals. It really feels like the root of Maui’s yoga movement is here on the Northshore, and I wanted to reach Wailea. Opening the studio seemed like the opportunity I was looking for to generate and open up people to the community of Maui Yoga Shala. I want to build the community, where everyone gets to know each other. People want to have that in the South.

One of the main things that I bring to the table as an instructor is I like to take from all of these different schools of thoughts and modalities and fuse them together. I think there’s a lot of overlap between exercise and pilates and yoga you can find the areas that all agree and then focus on those. Strengthen and move the body in so many ways so you keep it interesting for your muscles and for your mind. Then you have fun in class when it is not the same thing every time.

For me personally, I like to keep it innovative and fresh. Then the body is constantly challenged.

Before you discredit hanging from the ceiling as a workout, try it. I worked muscles I didn’t even know I had in my chest, arms and core. Its also a kick to climb, hang and stretch on the silks.

With gravity, I can’t even get close to the splits, but it is a whole new experience from the air.

Furgiuele’s signature class is Pole Dance. While it doesn’t sound like a workout, this class is designed to kick your ass while teaching you to look cheeky too. To start, you hit the floor with Amanda, leg and core exercises until your muscles are screaming. Luckily, Furgiuele is a natural entertainer, and knows just what to say and do to pull you through the hard parts (the saucy soundtrack playing in the background doesn’t hurt).

Her karaoke and air guitar renditions will loosen up any reservations you might have before hitting the pole. It’s okay to have fun here–even better, laugh at yourself. I was a total beginner, and she got me really comfortable on the pole very quickly, and that’s half the battle. She’ll also explain safety and how to keep from injuring yourself. Even though I was a beginner, I broke a sweat from the start.

Body Alive Yoga Studio is cranking up the new year with their annual Yoga Challenge.

It started on Wednesday, Jan. 21, but if you want to jump in on Jan. 22, it’s no problem– you just have to do a makeup class. Nolan says that they offer the class at the studio to give participants a chance to see the difference yoga can make on the body when you practice regularly, but it’s also an exercise in accountability. You have the support of everyone else who’s committed to the challenge.

Signing up for yoga challenge costs $100, but participants are also entered to win a grand prize at the end of the challenge and everyone gets a gift.

Another class Nolan teaches is her Tone and Tighten series. It’s a cardiovascular and strengthtraining combination with pilates and yoga.

Aspects of yoga-like posture and breath are there, along with exercises like squats and lunges so you get a full body workout. It finishes with stretching.

Tone and Tighten classes are offered on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30am. Preregister for the month and get classes for $10 while drop-ins are $15. To sign up, call 808-359-1060.

It was love at first sight at the yoga mat for Nadia Toraman. She started teaching yoga 23 years ago on the Northshore. In fact, the first yoga class I took was hers, back in 1997. She’s dedicated to creating a yoga legacy by teaching and growing the community of yogis and yoginis. The Maui Yoga Shala has a full schedule of yoga and dance.

One of her passions is teaching keiki classes– Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 3pm. Her own flavor of yoga, Maui Aloha Yoga, is available everyday except Saturday at 9:30am.

Toraman brings in workshops with visiting instructors every month to keep things fresh. Every Sunday through the end of February, she’ll have workshops with David Williams, credited with being one of the leading ashtanga practitioners. His Wailea classes are offered 3-5:30 pm for $60. An upcoming Acro-Yoga workshop on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 offers a full line-up of techniques to learn for $40 per session.

’m always learning about new ways to prepare food. My fitness friends tell me to think of food as nutrients, but I really want food to be fun. So between wine dinners, extravagant family comfort foods and excessive baking, I’ve learned to strike a balance.

You too can enjoy plant-based cooking, juice fasting and food made with what grows in season here on Maui and make it all taste great.

COOKING CLASS WITH MAMA T If you want to prepare yummy seasonal foods and learn from a chef who’s passionate about edible plants, check out Trisha “Mama T” Gonsalves’ class that takes place at 5pm on every third Tuesday at Down to Earth Kahului.

“This class is all about inspiring you to create,” Mama T says in between explaining how to substitute ingredients and discussing their nutritional value. The class is packed with preparation tips and grocery giveaways not to mention you get to taste everything presented.

Mama T started teaching vegetarian cooking on Oahu for Down To Earth as their Community Outreach Team Leader four years ago and has never looked back. She comes to Maui once a month to share her favorite recipes.

“The very first Down to Earth store was opened on Maui in Wailuku in 1977,” says Mama T. “Maui is near and dear to our hearts! I had community outreach team members teaching on Maui, but it would only last a few months. Last year, I decided to start flying over and teach the class.”

She creates three items for her class, the most recent one featured raw collard wraps,

nut bites and a green power juice. The recipes in her cooking class are different than what they serve at the hot bar, and they’re her own. She posts them all on the Down to Earth website, and passes out the recipes in class. Classes last an hour.

“My husband calls me a ‘flavor coordinator,’” says Mama T. “I am always thinking about food. I never stop thinking about food.

I grow food in my own garden and I think of things that would be wonderfully paired together. I find inspiration in health. I feel like my life has changed immensely since I have changed to a plant based diet.”

Her class is fun, moves fast and keeps the audience on its toes with giveaways. To win the grocery list for the recipe being made, you have to answer pop quiz quick-fire questions about what Mama T and her assistant Dana Naylor, a nutritional coach, are talking about.

Mama T has built a following on Maui. Her class has gone from stragglers to a regular following of 40 or so. She’s also branching out into television by starting a plant-based cooking segment on Living 808 on Channel 2 in the mornings every third Monday of the Month.

JUICING FOR HEALTH Monica Mikolajczyk has always felt a connection with health as an avid sports enthusiast. But when she did her first 30day juice fast, she realized how empowering that lifestyle could be.

“During that time, I was being monitored by a doctor getting blood work taken regularly because I was on medication,” says Mikolajczyk of the moment she decided to start up

a fledgling juice service. “My body completely cleaned itself up. I didn’t need thyroid medication anymore–I was no longer anemic.”

Her RIPE Juice business was born.

“I have been juicing for about 10 years,” says Mikolajczyk. “I started doing juice because I run marathons and triathlons. I wasn’t always really healthy but I was looking at different diets and researching different things and I stumbled onto raw foods and veganism. So I started to tap into that, and it lead me to juices.”

She started her small juicing delivery service and subscriptions on the idea that juicing for fasting is a hard job. Mikolajczyk realized that just making and sourcing the vegetables alone would be an impediment for most people.

“So I just remember thinking how much work it is to make juice everyday, and I thought wow it would be so convenient if someone made the juice and delivered it to you,” she says. “If you wanted to do a cleanse you wouldn’t have to worry about going to get the produce and making sure it was organic, how to find it and the process of making it.

I knew I wanted to start a business and make that an option for people. I started talking about it, and then I had someone who heard me talking about it and said sign me up.”

For the last few years, RIPE has been renting commercial kitchen space from the Paia Youth Center and working with local farmers and Local Harvest for her organic local fruits and veggies. The RIPE Juice menu is organized into

green juices, fruit juices, root juices and special blends for issues like detox, diabetes and inflammation. She also makes a selection of raw almond mylks and elixirs. She says she’ll soon add macadamia mylks because then she can source the nuts locally. She manages a small team of juicers and delivery drivers.

“RIPE Juice got busy enough to quit my other job, rent a commercial kitchen, and eventually I got my brother to become part of my business,” says Mikolajczyk. “Now we are expanding to our own commercial kitchen, where people can also come pick up their juices if they want to. We will have some juices that people can pick up.

It won’t be a juice bar, there won’t be seating, but right now I don’t have a place that is convenient to pick up your own juice. So I’m really excited about the new location.”

Mikolajczyk says part of her goal for RIPE Juice has always been to work with local farmers, but she was surprised at how much she fell in love with their vision. RIPE juice is planning to open their new space by the Feb. 15, assuming their construction project stays on schedule. They will be going into the old Kahului Shopping Center near Ah Fooks.

Hollywood Hacking Michael Mann’s ‘Blackhat’ is exciting despite iffy script ★★★★★ Rated R / 133 Min.

T

his is what happens when a master filmmaker takes on pulpy material, the kind of airport read you discard the moment your plane lands. Blackhat isn’t stupid, but director Michael Mann, who’s made some of the smartest, most influential and brilliantly crafted crime thrillers ever made, is using the screenplay as a jumping off point, not the foundation. Mann’s thematically similar Heat and Collateral, had gripping narratives to draw us in on the damaged, soulful figures at its center. Here, we have a cinematic virtuoso with blending imagery, ideas and human drama, working hard to turbocharge an iffy screenplay.

Blackhat begins with a stunning, beautifully crafted scene that blends live action and CGI imagery, showing us how a nuclear power plant in China is hacked via malware, causing a massive explosion. Suit and tie big-wigs at the FBI sit around and figure out that a RAT (remote administration tool) was used in the attack. A Blackhat is both a hacker and, I’m reminded by film history, a visual that sug-

gests The Bad Guy (the hero, in some early westerns, typically wears The White Hat).

Chris Hemsworth (playing an American and sporting a quasi-Bruce Willis accent) plays Nick Hathaway, a legendary hacker who is released from prison to help a team of investigators track down the culprit of the explosion. The team includes Nick’s MIT buddy, Chen Dawai (Leehom Wang) and his sister, Chen Lien (played by the beguiling Tang Wei, star of Lust, Caution). Lien falls fast and hard for Hathaway; they discover a shared attraction that grows as the danger increases. Their pursuit of armed, murderous crooks takes them in directions that threaten to tear their bond apart, putting everything they live for at risk.

As a fictitious investigation into the alltoo-current topic of online hacking, the movie’s a bust. As a globe-trotting action movie, Mann is in his element. Hemsworth is wise to pursue non-Thor roles, particularly since his successful collaboration with Ron Howard on Rush demonstrated he can play more than a hammer-tossing Norse god. Unfortunately, he can’t hold the screen like some of the other leading men from Mann films, who embodied brute strength,

survival instincts and a lovelorn heart.

Considering how Daniel Day-Lewis, Robert De Niro and Johnny Depp brought so much passion to Mann’s The Last of the Mohicans, Heat and Public Enemies, respectively, it’s a disappointment to see Hemsworth provided a golden opportunity that he’s just not suited for. Wei initially seems stuck playing the love interest, but her role gets better in the second half and she arguably steals the film from Hemsworth. Viola Davis and Mann regular John Ortiz are stuck in exposition-heavy roles, though Yorick van Wageningen (a top notch character actor) brings great shades to the role of villainous mastermind behind it all.

By the time we reach the flamboyant, highly stylized climax, the battle between good and evil becomes downright mythic, with staging

and emotions approaching operatic levels.

Mann gets away with this and other grand uses of cinema. His movies, after all, are more exciting and cooler than almost anyone else’s.

After Mann’s belated absence (Public Enemies, my favorite film of 2009, was his most recent), and Drive and The Town effectively (and heavily) borrowing his look, themes and character types, it’s a pleasure to see him back. His latest is another muscular, visually gorgeous depiction of criminals in perpetual forward motion, though Blackhat closely resembles his enjoyable but muddily plotted Miami Vice.

Mann’s latest is held back by a story neither fresh nor fully immersive. Still, the sensational cinematography, thrilling shoot outs, cool soundtrack and (mostly) effective love story alone make this work. ■
