in after we won the election,” Antone told me. “His application was one of many that came in.” Antone added that there were three finalists for the job, though he declined to name the other two, citing county personnel policies.

The County’s Parks Department has been without a full-time director since Glenn Correa retired in June. He’d been on administrative leave since February, removed pending a Maui Police investigation of alleged corruption at the department involving golfing on county time (the department ultimately punted the investigation to the state Attorney General’s office, which refused to confirm or deny any investigation and ultimately never released any official finding). So for much of 2014, Deputy Director Savage has run the department on an “interim” basis, but her lack of administrative experience made her taking the top job all but impossible.

In addition to recently terminated Programming Director Shawn Michael, four additional former Akaku employees appeared at the Dec. 15, 2014 meeting of the public access cable channel’s board of directors to call for an independent investigation of management practices at the station. What’s more, one of the employees handed out copies of a letter signed by 14 former employees that said station staff have been “subjected to a gross abuse of power under the current CEO’s leadership” (see our Dec. 4, 2014 cover story “Stream Down” for more on Michael’s problems with the nonprofit station).

The meeting at Akaku Plaza (nicknamed “Halfway to Hell” by former employees because of its 333 Dairy Road address) began at 5:30pm and lasted about three hours. But the board spent two-thirds of that time in closed executive session with Honolulu attorney Bruce Voss of Bays Lung Rose & Holma on speakerphone.

Because the board chose to meet in the cramped Akaku Media Lab, former staffers and members of the public (like Wailuku attorney David Sereno, who said he was there to observe) had to stand along the back of the room while the board itself sat around a table draped in black. During executive session, they had to wait outside near the Akaku “Walk of Fame,” where friends of the station like George Kahumoku, Senator Roz Baker and former Governor Neil Abercrombie pressed their hand and foot prints in cement.

The reason for the board spending all that time in secret was simple–former employees kept stepping forward to denounce the current station management–and specifically, Akaku President and CEO Jay April.

“To this day, I don’t know why I was kicked out,” said Buck Joiner, a former Akaku producer around 2000 who said April was in the charge of the board meeting that led to his dismissal, which Joiner

said took place after he asked for the thenCEO to investigate alleged grievances.

Linda Puppolo, a former Akaku Administrative Director, handed out copies of a new management plan and budget she put together on her own using the most recent station tax forms that are publicly available. “I’m not testifying against Jay April,” she said. “I’m testifying because I don’t like what’s going on.” She said employees past and present with any grievance “have nowhere to go” and are “afraid of retribution.” She said it was a “shame” the board had let problems fester for years. “I would like to see an investigation and I would like you to call me as a witness,” she added.

Elyssa Shimada, who had worked at the station in 2006, called Jay April her “friend,” but said there was “no room in the workplace for tyrant behavior” and “bullying is never, ever acceptable.”

Sara Tekula, Akaku’s Education Director until she was terminated a few years ago, presented the letter signed by 14 former employees. She spoke first of the great things April had done for the organization: “Because of Jay’s leadership, we have been able to win many political battles,” she said. Then she began to cry as she read from the letter.

“We support a detailed and transparent accounting of the current CEO’s leadership and management practices including but not limited to equity in employee salary and benefits, review of employee written performance evaluations and terminations, as well as an

investigation into any perceived wrongdoings against employees, past and present,” the letter stated. “We suspect–if an independent and thorough investigation were to take place–that you will uncover more than enough information to confirm that Akaku and its staff has been subjected to a gross abuse of power under the current CEO’s leadership.”

Not everyone who showed up criticized April and Akaku management. Realtor and Democratic Party activist Lance Holter called April a “creative genius” and said “without Jay, we wouldn’t have Akaku.”

He also denounced the former employees’ allegations as “completely misguided” but told them, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” When Holter was done, April humblebragged that he’d asked Holter and “quite a few” others who wanted to praise him not to attend the meeting.

The board ultimately took no action on any of the testimony offered at the meeting, though Board Chairman Gene Zarro said at the end that he would release a statement.

Reached the next morning by phone, Zarro said he was also dealing with a recent death in the family and didn’t know when the statement would be finished. “We’re just trying to do the best we can,” he said.

BUENCONSEJO GETS A NEW JOB On Tuesday, Dec. 9, Ka‘ala Buenconsejo became the new County of Maui Parks Department Director, according to an inter-office email sent out by the department’s interim director.

“This is to let you know all know [sic] there has been an appointment to the Director of Parks and Recreation position,” interim Parks chief Brianne Savage said in the Dec. 5 email, which MauiTime obtained. “Ka’ala Buenconsejo will be starting with the Department on Tuesday, December 9. He will be an excellent leader for the department as we continue to strive for more efficient and effective ways to serve our community through the implementation of positive change.”

County Communications Director Rod Antone confirmed that Mayor Alan Arakawa had hired Buenconsejo.

no political experience (his most recent job was marketing director for Na Hoaloha Ekolu, the parent corporation that owns Old Lahaina Luau, Star Noodle, Aloha Mixed Plate and Leoda’s Kitchen & Pie Shop). His campaign website says he’s also worked for Kapalua Land Company as well as in banking, real estate. He has a bachelors degree in journalism from UH Manoa.

But this year, Buenconsejo ran against Maui County Councilmember Elle Cochran.

Though ultimately unsuccessful (Buenconsejo lost by seven percentage points), Buenconsejo benefitted from tens of thousands of dollars in campaign spending by two Honolulu-based pro-development SuperPACs. The Maui News reported back in February that the Director’s salary is $114,770 a year.

MauiSphere A public relations firm is calling it “the most expensive photograph in history,” and it may very well be exactly that. On Dec. 10, Peter Lik–the famous Australian photographer who has galleries all over the world, including Lahaina–announced that he’s sold the above photo, titled “Phantom,” to an unnamed private collector for $6.5 million.

According to the PetaPixel blog, the previous title holder for most expensive photo was “Rhein II,” shot by Andreas Gursky and sold for $4.3 million in 2011.

“The purchase also included Lik’s masterworks ‘Illusion’ for $2.4 million and ‘Eternal Moods’ for $1.1 million,” states a Dec. 9 press release from Lik Galleries’ PR firm.

“With this $10 million sale, Lik now holds four of the top 20 spots for most expensive photographs ever sold. He already has a position in the ranking with a previous $1

STATE WANTS HELP MEASURING STATE’S CRAPPY BROADBAND SPEEDS Looking at the latest global download speed rankings from Ookla isn’t generally a wise thing to do when you live in Hawaii. See, on Dec. 8, I tested my internet provider’s download speeds.

WE FORGOT LEILANI FARM SANCTUARY Any accounting of nonprofits around the county and their needs this holiday season is going to be incomplete, but in this case we actually intended to get Leilani Farm Sanctuary into our annual Charity Gift Guide (Nov 26, 2014). The private buyer is represented by Joshua Roth of the lawfirm Glaser Weil Fink Howard Avchen & Shapiro, LLP in Los Angeles, states the news release, which also indicated that the buyer “preferred not to be publicly identified for security and privacy reasons.”

“The buyer saw the photos in New York and the deal transpired from there,” said a Lik Galleries spokesperson. “We don’t actually have an exact location since the buyer is anonymous.”

Given so many unknowns about the sale, at least one critic expressed skepticism that the deal actually went through. “Peter Lik’s claims to be the ‘world’s most influential fine art photographer’ and ‘one of the most important artists of the 21st century’ follow a fine tradition of male bluster,” Andrew Tay-

Participants will receive access to a personal reporting suite that allows them to monitor their own Internet service performance in real-time.”

I reiterate: rural Oregon is getting 50 mbps download speeds, while Wailuku is getting less than 8.0 mpbs.

News Of The Weird DYING TO GET A DATE Like many in society’s subgroups, people who work in “death” industries or professions in the U.K. may believe it difficult to reach “like-minded” suitors. Hence, Carla Valentine established Dead Meet earlier this year and told Vice.com in October that she has drawn 5,000 sign-ups among morticians, coroners, embalmers, cemetery workers, taxidermists, etc., who share her chagrin that “normal” people are often grossed out or too indiscreet to respect the dignity of her industry’s “clients.” We might, said Valentine, need a sensitive companion at the end of the day to discuss a particularly difficult decomposition. Or, she added, perhaps embalmers make better boyfriends because their work with cosmetics helps them understand why “many women take so long to get ready.”

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE A passerby shooting video in November outside the Lucky River Chinese restaurant in San Francisco caught an employee banging large slabs of frozen meat on the sidewalk– which was an attempt, said the manager, to defrost them. A KPIX-TV reporter, visiting the precise sidewalk area on the video, found it covered in “blackened gum, cigarette butts and foot-tracked bacteria,” but the manager said the worker had been fired and the meat discarded.

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION A November order from China’s State Administration for Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television appears to impose a ban on the use of all idioms–including puns–as part of the government’s crackdown on nonstandard language, especially since that discourages children from learning proper vocabulary and grammar. All mass media outlets must “avoid changing the characters, phrasings and meanings” of words–even though, according to the Beijing reporter for London’s The Guardian, Chinese culture is saturated with puns.

THE CONTINUING CRISIS As young professionals have embraced urban neighborhoods, locally grown produce has proliferated in community (and even backyard) gardens and is thought to be healthier than pesticide-laden commercial produce. But the New York Post revealed in November (based on state Health Department data) that such gardens in construction-dense New York City are vulnerable to astonishingly high levels of lead and other toxic metals. One community garden in Brooklyn’s BedfordStuyvesant, for example, showed levels of lead nearly 20 times the safe level.

In November, a clothing store on Yabao Road in Beijing came under criticism for posting a sign, “Chinese Not Admitted,” on its door. An employee told the Beijing Youth Daily newspaper that no one should believe that “we Chinese look down upon ourselves. But some Chinese customers are too annoying.” A legal scholar told the newspaper that China, except for Hong Kong, has no law against racial or ethnic discrimination. ■

save dogs’ lives by flying THEM TO THE MAINLAND “We just saved Clara’s life!”

I

t was a Sunday morning and Laura Forsythe, who’d just spoken those words, was understandably happy.

You could hear the joy in her voice, and in the voices of her fellow volunteers. Clara was most likely ecstatic, too, but she wasn’t really in a position to say so. That’s because Clara’s a dog–a Shar Pei and Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix, to be precise.

Forsythe and her colleagues are part of the Wings of Aloha (WOA) program, which finds homes for animals that spend part of their lives living in a four-by-10-foot kennel at the Maui Humane Society. WOA is a donor-funded program that transfers primarily dogs to partners on the Mainland where they are guaranteed adoption.

“It’s like winning the doggie lottery to be accepted for the Wings of Aloha program,” said MHS Chief Executive Officer Jerleen Bryant.

WOA is necessary because Maui has an imbalance between the number of domesticated animals and families willing to adopt. MHS–one of several local organizations working to save the lives of unwanted pets–receives between

700 and 800 animals every month, according to Bryant. “Unfortunately, in our community we do still have more pets than we have [people] willing to adopt,” said Jamie Fitzpatrick, the MHS Director of Animal and Client Services.

Clara was a perfect fit for the program, but MHS had not been able to get a good photo of her, which is an important aspect of the cross-Pacific adoption program. When the group working that Sunday heard that Clara’s morning photo session turned out well, they knew they had saved Clara’s life. A photo–along with biographical, medical and temperament information–is the only way to introduce Mainland rescue partners to adoptable animals on Maui.

The sad and often unspoken truth of pet overpopulation is simple: if a pet does not find a home after reaching a shelter, it faces possible euthanasia, our society’s gentle way to say that we kill our domesticated animals.

“We are an open admission facility and we’re on a county contract to take in every animal brought into our doors,” Fitzpatrick said when asked the sensitive question about euthanasia rates on the island. She hopes the imbalance will one day be corrected by spay and

neuter programs. “Until then, unfortunately, that does put us in a situation where we do have to face euthanasia on a regular basis,” she said.

Living on an island adds to the challenge of finding viable homes for animals.

On the Mainland, animals are geographically redistributed–loaded into vans and driven hundreds of miles to a town where there is less overpopulation and more families looking to adopt. “It’s what shelters and rescues are doing to try and help decrease the euthanasia rate,” Bryant said.

“We don’t have that luxury on Maui.”

The Wings of Aloha program began two years ago, practically out of desperation to reduce the Humane Society’s euthanasia rate. Since then, more than 500 animals have found homes on the Mainland. Bryant said the WOA program flies an average of 25 dogs per month, primarily to the Pacific Northwest (as this story was going to press, KHON 2 News reported that two dogs–one part of the WOA program–were stolen from the Maui Humane Society).

In an effort to overcome the geographic challenges of redistribution, MHS reached out to shelter and rescue centers that Bryant had existing rela-

BY SUZANNE KAYIAN tionships with in Oregon and Washington. It wasn’t an easy sell. Tina Stewart, Executive Director and founder of Tender Care Animal Rescue in Vancouver, WA, said she was taken aback when she first heard about the program.

“The logistics of it all at first was a bit overwhelming,” Stewart said. “However, we were founded to help shelters reduce their euthanasia rate. So we worked it out.”

In addition to Clara, the dog who “won the doggie lottery” the day I visited the shelter, the team also saved Chloe, Trey and others. Chloe is a fawncolored mixed breed that lived at MHS for 10 months without being adopted.

She was a favorite of staff and volunteers but month after month, she would see her buddies go home with their new human families while she spent her days living on a cement floor, behind wire gates, between brick walls.

MHS Adoption Counselor Rachael Magee said Chloe, who was left at the shelter during the first year of the WOA program, was a super dog. They took her on every outing and to every MHS adoption event for months.

“Through no fault of our own, Chloe just wasn’t looked at,” Magee said. “I

animals but may not be able to make a long-term commitment to a pet.

People can also support the program by allowing WOA to attach a dog to their airline itinerary. Dogs can fly independently, but it’s cheaper if they are linked to a person. Letting a dog travel on an existing airline ticket is a no-cost way to support the program; 100 percent of WOA donations go directly to the cost of airline transfers. “Travelers love it because they are truly helping to save animals,” Bryant said.

homes for dogs that are scheduled to travel is another key aspect of the WOA program. When WOA pets move into a local foster home, it frees up a space at the shelter for an incoming dog. “We really save two lives with each transfer,” I heard several shelter staff members say.

Volunteering as a foster family is a no-expense, no-hassle way to support the WOA program. MHS absorbs the costs of all food, medical care and other necessities. “Certainly the space issue is important,” Bryant said. “[But] we just need a safe loving home for these animals to spend some time in before they fly out.” It also helps the transfer partner place an animal because they are provided information about the pet’s personality outside of the shelter environment, Bryant added.

“We make it as easy as we can for our foster homes because we really want everybody to have a good experience,” Bryant said. “Maybe they will continue to foster or maybe they will tell their friends.” Bryant said fostering is also a good option for people who love

wouldn’t say she was un-adoptable. We just didn’t have somebody here that was interested.” Bryant said everyone at the Humane Society was rallying to help find Chloe a forever home, but they were not having any luck. So the WOA team worked through the details to get her on a transfer list.

There’s no formula for which dogs get transfer. Often, dogs that have been at the shelter the longest are the first considered. The staff and volunteers also look at the rescue partners and try to match dogs they feel will be quickly adopted. For example, people who live in rural areas on the Mainland are more likely to adopt herding dogs. “We help them narrow it down so that they have a manageable list to choose from so they can figure out which of our animals will compliment their current population,” Fitzpatrick said.

When a Mainland rescue partner chose Chloe, she was able to leave her kennel at MHS and spend her last days on the island living as a family pet in a foster home. Providing temporary foster

Chloe was adopted within one month after leaving Maui. So was Trey, a pit mix who was brought to MHS after being found at Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area. Trey had a severely injured leg, which needed to be amputated.

“We don’t know the story,” Magee said.

“We just know that his leg injury was an old one; he’d been used to not using it and it was beyond being able to fix. It was better to amputate.”

“Trey–oh my goodness!” said Stewart, who fostered the dog in her home.

“There are not enough awesome things I can say about his lovely self.” She said he was a well-mannered, lovable pit mix with a great personality. “I do not think he has an aggressive bone in his body,” she said, alluding to the negative reputation of the breed. “He was always so gentle with my children and cats. It was an honor to foster him for the week he was here before being adopted.”

One week is all it took for Trey to find his forever mom: Bev Smith, a 29-yearold graduate student at the University of Oregon in Eugene. “I am overjoyed to be Trey’s owner, as I know what a very special guy he is,” Smith wrote in an email to Magee. “Though I have only had him since Tuesday night, I already love Trey dearly; he is the kindest, most gentle and affectionate dog that I have ever met (and I’ve met many!).

which allows the shelter to save lives by providing special medical care to animals who are ill or have been injured, abused or neglected–paid for Trey’s surgery.

Magee didn’t want Trey to return to the shelter environment after his surgery, so she opened her home to him as a foster mom. Magee said she, her family and her pets adored Trey, but she knew she could not help other animals if she kept him permanently in her home.

“Each dog I foster holds a special place in my heart,” Magee said. “Trey was a very tough guy to say goodbye to.

My only reason for not adopting him was that if we did, we could not help the next dog in need–and there are so many to help.”

After Trey recovered, he was put on a transfer list that was submitted to Stewart’s foster-based Tender Care Animal Rescue. WOA coordinators knew Stewart was comfortable taking pit mixes and that Tender Care could help Trey find a good home. Plus, he would go directly into a foster home on the Mainland.

WOA transfers nearly one dog per day to the Mainland. But at any given time, there are more than 50 dogs listed for adoption on the Maui Humane Society website.

During my shelter visits, I met a wide variety of dogs–Greyhounds, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Beagles, German Shorthaired Pointers, terriers and Australian Shepherds. The Humane Society encourages animal lovers to consider a rescue dog when adding a pet to their family. C

har siu bao does not make a manapua. The manapua is a Hawaii-born street food, certainly inspired by the Chinese bao but not at all the same thing. Bao is a Cantonese dim sum dish, mostly filled with char siu, in small sized buns. But the food Cantonese immigrants in Hawaii sold on the street was different.

Manapua is a Hawaiianized name for “pork pastry,” and through the years they’ve gotten bigger and bigger. The fillings also vary–sweet potato, hot dog and, of course,

the ubiquitous sweet red roast pork. There are also two schools of manapua: baked or steamed. Until now, Honolulu dominated the manapua craving, with bakeries like Libby’s, Char Hung Sut, Royal Kitchen, Island Manapua Factory and Chun Wah Kam serving the best meaty buns.

Now Maui has its own. It’s called The Manapua Bakery, and it’s located on Main Street in Wailuku.

“We worked on our recipe for months,” said Natasha Gould, one of Manapua Bakery’s co-owners. “I knew we had to start with something as good as the ones everyone craves from their favorite spot in Oahu. If we could impress the people who go to Oahu to buy their manapua and bring them back, then I would have something. People are serious about their manapua and they have a finicky palate.”

Keoni Smith, Gould’s fiancé and business partner, had brought her some manapua from Oahu, and after eating a few she wanted to know where they could get some on Maui.

But Smith told her that Maui didn’t have any manapua bakeries. Gould couldn’t believe it.

At the time, they were trying to establish their own horse stable and trail ride business. She tried to convince friends in the restaurant business to do manapua, but no one bit.

When setting up their horse stables stalled, they decided to bring manapua to Maui.

After moving from Hana to Wailuku, they set up the Manapua Bakery. Gould says they first tested out recipes on friends and family.

“We got the sweet bread recipe from my great aunt in Portugal,” said Gould. “My auntie had to call her–my Portuguese is very rusty.

This sweet bread is amazing. The steam bun is very particular, from the measurements to the steam time.You have to get it just right. The steam bun has to have that perfect roundness.”

And they certainly do. It was about 2pm when I visited the bakery, and watched tray after tray of steamed and baked buns coming out of the kitchen and filling hot storage racks. I could hear the phone ringing constantly over the sounds coming from the kitchen radio. Gould said it takes 25 minutes to steam and around 22 to 24 minutes to bake batches. The baked manapua have a little glaze that is brushed over the top to give it shine and a bit of sweetness.

With all the racks full, I asked if they are staying open later now, thinking this many manapua would last. But Gould told me they could sell them all within the hour. It looked like a lot, Gould said, but someone could come in and buy it all. It’s happened before. miso chicken. They will also make a shrimp and pea version that’s only offered as a special. The manapua ranges from $2.25 for the potato and egg to $2.65 for everything else.

The menu also has pork hash and shrimp hash siomai at $1.15 and $1.20, respectively.

The fillings are savory and generous and the bread is light and fluffy. These manapua become addictive really fast. The duck bun is my favorite so far (both steamed and baked). In fact, I really can’t decide if I like steamed or baked better. The steamed bread is sturdier, dense with a light and airy crumb. But the Portuguese sweet bread baked version is divine. I really like how its meaty filling slightly soaks into the bread.

If you’re afraid that The Manapua Bakery might be out of what you are looking for, you can always give them a call to see what they have on hand. Pay attention to their Facebook page for updates as to what is on special, or special deals like $1.99 manapua.

Smith said they bake about 5,000 manapua a day, and they can’t keep up. “We need other manapua shops in Maui,” he said.

They buy 50 pounds of sweet potato from Molokai each week. It’s cooked in coconut milk and used as a filling for one of their vegetarian options. In their kim chee and mushroom version, they have a Korean lady down the street make their kim chee.

“She makes the kim chee from scratch and we tweaked it to our liking,” said Gould. “We try to source as much as we can from our neighbors and keep the stimulus here. We like that we are providing work and income in this area, but that is why some of the prices are higher.”

They also pay close attention to customer requests, and suggestions pan out into new flavors at the bakery like the lau lau pork hash. Another new flavor is teriyaki pork, which is catching on quick. The menu varies each day depending on what’s in stock, but they are trying to keep char siu, roast duck and sweet potato versions ready to go. They also have spicy egg, Indian beef curry and

Diminutive Epic Peter Jackson’s Hobbit series is weak, but ‘Battle of Five Armies’ is the best of them

he preview audience in the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center theater was in especially good spirits and vocally cheerful–kind of like a pack of dwarves or elves before a great battle. But my love for Peter Jackson’s Tolkien movies ended in 2003. My annual visit with his new Hobbit trilogy has become a job obligation, not the act of a loving fanboy.

I still remember when I saw The Fellowship of the Ring for the first time. I bought the tickets weeks in advance and caught the

opening day, early morning showing at an IMAX theater in Denver with my brother and a batch of his friends. The film had such a powerful effect on me, I saw it a few times before it left theaters.

The Two Towers was even better and I liked The Return of the King, though I started to get franchise fatigue. Jackson, the gifted but offbeat director of hilarious gross-out horror flicks and the wonderfully warped The Frighteners had pulled off an enormous, unlikely and truly impressive feat. For the beginning of the 21st century, The Lord of the Rings became the true movie heir to the first three Star Wars epics.

I don’t own the extended cuts of the Rings movies or know the back stories of even the slightest characters in J.R.R Tolkien’s universe (that would be my father-in-law, whose Hobbit nerdom trumps even my Star

Wars acumen). But the second Hobbit trilogy seemed like a gift to those who couldn’t get enough. Instead of walking away a big winner, Jackson appeared unable to step away from the betting table and placed yet another gigantic bet. There’s no denying that the original cast and the story of Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee can’t be beaten. Still, as thoroughly uneven and seemingly unnecessary as Jackson’s encore trilogy is, this last entry justifies his efforts.

It begins with some leftover business from the previous film. The who-cares setting of Lake-town is being set on fire by the talking, fire-breathing dragon Smaug. As voiced again by Benedict Cumberbatch, this delicious character exits the film much too quickly.

Most of the running time is devoted to the battle of the title, in which Gandalf (Ian McKellen, perfect), Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and Thorin (Richard Armitage) are at a crossroads that involves pivotal secrets, alliances that must be made and the mother of all rumbles. The build-up to this gigantic sequence is aided a great deal by Billy Connolly, adding exquisite bluster as the mighty Dain. Once the fighting starts, it’s a lot of CGI crash and bash, with hordes of soldiers smacking into one another. The best scenes are near the end, when the one-on-one duels pack serious thrills and more wow-inducing moments than the previous two installments.

At 144-minutes, it’s Jackson’s shortest epic and moves briskly. While there’s lots of supporting characters I never connected with, there are little emotional moments in the middle that are potently touching. The use of silence in some scenes is effective, and the production is, as always, staggering in its size and execution in creating a wondrous world.

Jackson is smart to linger on McKellen’s closing moment, as his magnificent embodiment of Gandalf is a pleasure to witness once more. The closing bookend is just right.

When all is said and done, this stands timidly in the shadow of a much greater trilogy.

It plays like a big movie about minor characters, who are setting down the path for the great figures who will dominate The Lord of the Rings trilogy that follows. Yet, I have to hand it to Peter Jackson. He’s put on a good show and concludes this in a satisfying way.

Both silly and exciting, this is the best of the three prequel movies.

Nice work, Mr. Jackson. Now, how about making a prequel trilogy to The Frighteners? ■
