MAUI PD RELEASES ‘STOP OR GET STOPPED’ RESULTS

In historian Paul Fussell’s 1990 book Wartime, which is filled with fascinating essays about the conduct of World War II, he discusses the incredible scale of materiel production (and destruction) during the war. At one point, he quotes a statistic I’d never come across before, one that encapsulates the war’s immense magnitude of destruction.

“The few who fought are able to respond appropriately–that is, without surprise–to such data as this: that in the Netherlands alone, more than 7000 planes tore into the ground or the water, afflicted by bullets, flak, exhaustion of fuel or crew, ‘pilot error,’ discouragement, or suicidal intent,” Fussell wrote. “In an article about archaeological excavation in Dutch fields and drained marshes, Les Daly

has emphasized the multitudinousness, the mad repetitiveness of these 7000 crashes, reminding readers that ‘the total fighter and bomber combat force of the U.S. Air Force today amounts to about 3400 planes.’ Or, ‘to put it another way, the crash of 7000 aircraft would mean that every square mile of the entire state of New Jersey would have shaken to the impact of a downed plane.’”

I was reminded of all this because of a series of news releases sent out last week by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) concerning the discovery of a World War II fighter plane in the shallows off Midway in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. The plane, a P-40K Warhawk fighter, was apparently part of the U.S. Army Air Force’s 78th Fighter Squadron, which was stationed on Midway for the first four months of 1943.

And yet another cutesy-titled Maui Police campaign has come to a close. You can breathe easier, kids: the MPD’s 14-day “Stop or Get Stopped” push against people who run red lights and stop signs is over.

“As with all of our traffic enforcement campaigns our goal is to raise awareness, educate the public as well as our officers, and to gain voluntary compliance,” MPD Sergeant Nick Krau, the department’s DUI Task Force supervisor, said in an Oct. 20 press release. “By working together we can drastically reduce traffic collisions and reach our ultimate goal of zero preventable traffic deaths.”

According to the press release, MPD officers wrote 562 citations and made 32 DUI arrests during the operation, which involved increased surveillance at various intersections around the county. Of those citations, 64 percent (359 citations) were for running a red light or stop sign, 24 percent (134) were for having no auto insurance and the remaining 12 percent (69) were for driving without a license.

“We conduct these traffic enforcement campaigns because we, as police officers, have an obligation to ensure that we are doing everything in our power to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities in our community,” Krau added in the Oct. 20 news release. “Although this campaign has come to an end, the impact and awareness raised during this short initiative will continue to reduce traffic collisions and improve the safety on our roadways for quite some time.”

This is a nice sentiment–especially since 19 people have, so far this year, died on Maui’s roads. The last time we saw such numbers was 2012, and when that year was over, 20 people had died in Maui County traffic collisions (last year, 11 people died in Maui County road accidents). As trends are going, it’s a fair bet that we’ll beat the 2012 figure easily this year.

The problem is running red lights or stop signs doesn’t seem to be causing many fatalities here. Looking over Maui PD press releases and various local news stories from the past year, the same phrases keep appear-

ing when looking at the factors that caused the collisions: “loses control,” “excessive speed” and “drugs and alcohol.”

About four years ago in Northern California, I took a one-day driving school class after getting a speeding ticket. “Do you know the number one cause of highway accidents in the nation?” our instructor asked us. “Unsafe lane changes.”

Monitoring the county’s intersections is easy (so easy, in fact, that many Mainland cities simply have automated ticketwriting cameras do the job, though those operations tend to exist solely to generate revenue). Getting people to drive safely?

Yeah, good luck with that.

Though Midway was the site of one of the war’s largest and most strategically important battles of the war (June 1942), nothing much happened there during the war after that.

Nonetheless, an astonishing number of planes crashed during the war, almost irrespective of whether they were in actual combat.

“During the Second World War, planes were literally falling out of the sky every day,” the California aviation archaeologist Gary Patrick Macha told me back in 2001.

“During the war, more pilots died training in the United States than in combat overseas.”

Which is why the discovery of the P-40 at Midway fascinated me. Perhaps it’s because we’re so far removed from World War II today that the discovery of a few bits of a long-wrecked fighter (one of more than 13,000 produced during the war) spurred so much interest from NOAA. “This discovery is a compelling reminder of the history that rests on the seafloor at Midway Atoll,” said Monument Maritime Heritage Coordinator Kelly Gleason in an Oct. 16 NOAA news release. “Sunken aircraft sites like the P-40K Warhawk convey the sacrifices these young aviators made throughout World War II in the Pacific. Archaeology is an exciting way we can help to uncover these stories of bravery and resilience.”

According to NOAA’s Oct. 16 news release, divers located wreckage of the plane–an Allison engine, landing gear struts, propeller blades and even parts from three of the aircraft’s .50 caliber machine guns–in 25 feet of water. Though researchers had just a small portion of the aircraft to work with, they were apparently able to identify it. “According to archival records, only one P-40K Warhawk wrecked at the east of the reef of Eastern Island at Midway Atoll in February 1943, when the plane’s controls froze and the pilot, Lt. Ray Obenshain, Jr., parachuted to safety,” stated the news release.

Though this is the fourth World War II aircraft wreck found within the monument, NOAA estimates that the monument holds about 70 “potential” aircraft wrecks and another 60 “potential” shipwrecks. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

Does this mean the Maui County Council won’t be giving the Maui Visitors Bureau another $3.5 million next year? After all, the bureau’s own website boasts that “From shimmering beaches and sacred Iao Valley to migrating humpback whales and sunset on Haleakala, it’s not surprising Maui was voted the ‘Best Island’ by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler for 19 years.” Or will they, in fact, get even more taxpayer dollars in a desperate bid to reclaim past glory?

In any case, this year’s Top Island, Palawan, didn’t even appear in the 2013 rankings. “This small island—one of the Philippines’ 7,107— shot to the top of our list this year with a recent claim to fame,” Conde Nast Traveler said about this year’s Top Island. “It’s now home to one of the new seven natural wonders of the world, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River.”

Regardless, Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa seemed to be a good sport about the crushing loss of prestige among the world’s travel marketing mavens.

“I’ve heard from several people that the southern islands of the Philippines such as Palawan are remarkably beautiful,” said Arakawa through a spokesperson. “And the fact is, there are hundreds of vacation destinations out here now that weren’t there 20 years ago.

Maui’s visitor industry has had great success but we work hard for it, and we need to keep upgrading and evolving if we want to remain number one. Not just in the minds of Conde Nast readers but among travelers from all over the world. I sincerely believe we can return to the number one spot, but it will take a lot of hard work from our community. Working together I know we can do it.”

Kapalua Maui Charities recently donated $5,000 to the Maui Culinary Academy.

The organization made the gift on behalf of the 34th annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival, which was held June 13-15.

More than 3,500 wine and food connoisseurs came together during the event to celebrate, learn and commune about viniculture and culinary trends. The proceeds raised during the festival will be used for the education of aspiring culinary artists who attend MCA, which is a division of University of Hawaii Maui. “The generous funds from Kapalua Maui Charities will be used to enhance and enrich the educational environment at our Academy in addition to providing much needed scholarship support for deserving students,” said Chris Speere, External Coordinator of the Maui Culinary Academy program.

“Selfie fever” has begun to sully the sacred Islamic pilgrimages to Mecca, according to scholars who complained to Arab News in September. What for centuries has been a hallowed journey intended to renew the spirit of Islam (that all Muslims are called upon to experience at least once) has come, for some in the so-called “Facebook era,” to resemble a trip to Disneyland, with visitors to the Sacred Mosque texting friends the “evidence” of their piety. (Another scholar complained in a New York Times opinion piece in October that Mecca is often experienced more as a tour packaged by marketers and centered around Mecca’s upscale shopping malls rather than religious structures.)

THE NEW NORMAL Just in time for California’s new law requiring explicit consent for students’ sexual activities is the free iPhone/Google app Good2Go, which developer Lee Ann Allman promises will simplify the consent process (and even document it). As described in a September Slate.com report, Good2Go requires the initiator to send the prospective partner to at least four smartphone screens, wait for a text message, provide phone numbers (unless he/she is a multipleuser with an “account”) and choose accurately one’s sobriety level–all before “the mood” evaporates (ending the app’s usefulness). It took the tech-savvy Slate writer four minutes to navigate the process–and she was still unclear which sexual activities had been consented to, since those specifics aren’t referenced. (The app has since been pulled from the market.)

A PERFECT WORLD In August, the Tampa Bay Times reported a dispute in Dunedin, Florida, between 12-year-old lemonade-stand operator T.J. Guerrero and the adult neighbor (Doug Wilkey) trying to close him down as an un-

licensed entrepreneur, despite T.J.’s business plan for assisting his favorite animal shelter.

Of course, T.J. was quickly inundated with donations, media praise and more lemonade sales. Wilkey, however, is under investigation by the city after a tipster revealed that Wilkey himself might operate a home-based financial services business not properly licensed.

SENSITIVE IN VERMONT Lianne and Brian Kowiak of Waterbury, Vermont, complained to Ben & Jerry’s in September that its new ice cream flavor, “Hazed & Confused,” was “shock[ing]” and “upset[ting]” and should be changed immediately. Though most customers recognize the name only as a play on the 1993 cult movie “Dazed & Confused,” the Kowiaks insist that they never be reminded that their 19-year-old son died in a college hazing incident. And in Winooski, Vermont, in August, the local eatery Sneakers Bistro earned public advertising space by beautifying one of the city’s flower beds, and managers used it for the quixotic ad, “Yield for Sneakers Bacon.”

After one woman complained that the sign disrespected those who do not consume pork, Sneakers took it down.

MEDICAL MARVELS In October, workers at a clinic in Honda, Colombia, reported helping a 22-year-old woman who came in several days earlier with vegetation growing from her vagina.

She said her mother had told her that inserting a potato (now sprouting) was effective contraception. And an 18-year-old woman was admitted to Bishkek Hospital in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, in September with severe stomach pains, which doctors discovered was due to her long-standing habit of chewing both discarded hair and her own. Doctors removed a hairball that weighed 8.8 pounds (Yahoo News had a photo). ■

MAUITIME: Are you still blogging about your drinks?

JAMES SHOEMAKER: No, I should though, huh? People tell me our stuff is all over Instagram so I’m cool with that.

MT: I’ve been drinking your cocktails for years, and you seem to have no end to your creativity.Where do you get inspiration?

JS: You know, a good example would be the Pho Bang! We brought home a simple dish of Pho from Ba-Le and as we were unpacking everything, I looked at the baggie of side items for the Pho and all I could think about was “Yeah, we can make a cocktail with this” (except the bean sprouts, they’re unmanageable). So I got with Helen Hong, she turned me on to Lapsang Souchong tea and badda-boom, badda-bing it’s our most popular cocktail. Collaboration is a big part of what we do and we get our inspiration from each other… and the farmers market.

MT: Explain the art of Shrub. Is it hard to make? Can you give us a quick lesson?

JS: We have a whole Shrub Department and they’re not hard to make but it does take a touch, basically it’s fresh fruit and some kind of vinegar ( ie ..apple cider, champagne or balsamic). There is a gestation period and you need an industrial juicer so I guess that’s where our secrets dwell.

Ryan Mabbutt is the head of this department and the reigning Maui King of Shrubs.

MT: Why do you think beer cocktails have become so popular?

JS: Beer cocktails are popular because you’re taking two different art forms– brewing and distilling–and forcing them to be buddies. Kinda like rice and gravy.

MT: What are the rules when you’re creating a beer cocktail?

JS: For us, the trick to beer cocktails is to think of the beer as your “water.” The Golden Rule is always: spirit plus bitters plus sugar plus water equals cocktail.

MT: What kind of ginger beer do you use?

JS: We use Goslings Ginger Beer.

MT: At Dazoo, what is your most popular cocktail?

JS: You know, the Happy Hour Margarita is our most popular cocktail. Paia is a Margaritaville and we take that shit seriously. We’ll put our Margaritas up against anyone, anytime.

MT: How often do you do specialty nights at the bar?

James Shoemaker is a master. He’s a tiki drink buff who’s worked behind the wood for several years.You can find him at Dazoo in Paia, where his cocktail menu is both sophisticated and approachable. He’s a humble bar servant, even though he got voted best cocktail in the most recent Best of Maui readers poll. He still names drinks after his wife Suzy, and seeks out some of the most interesting ingredients, or makes them himself, like his signature grilled lemon juice. Once a month, the bar puts on a themed specialty cocktail evening, lately featuring Pau Vodka, a

spirit distilled just up the mountain. Always the gentleman, Shoemaker gives us some insight into his cocktail culture, and offers us a few goodies to try at home.

JS: Every third Wednesday of the month is Pau Night at Dazoo. We get in bed with our friends at Pau Vodka and create four one-of-a-kind cocktails for a one-nightonly fandango. jito. The drink is truly a melting pot of flavors, just like the mill camp that inspired it. In fact, the Mill Camp Mojito will be featured at all Sheraton Maui’s bars for the next year. Harvey has been with the Four Seasons for 15 years, and you can find him at Ferraro’s these days.

His keen palate fancies fresh tropical juices, local herbs and a strong dose of distilled artistry.

MT: Tell us about that winning cocktail.

MT: Can you describe that evening, the making of the Mill Camp Mojito, and the moment you found out you won?

GH: The Ocean Vodka contest was a great experience. We all met at the Sheraton and prepped our ingredients. We were talking story and having fun with the other entrants. That made it a great event. The doors opened and there were people everywhere.

Everyone was very interested in the drink and the story. When they announced me as the winner I was blown away. I didn’t think I was in the running. There were a lot of great drinks there in the competition.

MT: What is your must have spirit or spirits?

GH: They are all good–can you tell I drink?

I hate to say vodka is very important, but it is.You can either mask it with other things or make it the main attraction. Other must-haves are bitters. Many flavors of bitters. Cachaca is a great spirit to use. And, of course, gin.You know, I don’t know what I could do without–maybe the flavored vodkas and rums. I also like to use smoke and homemade jams and jellies and maple syrup. They can add a level to cocktails unknown to most.

MT: Tell us about Ferraro’s.

GH: [It’s] probably one of the greatest jobs I’ve ever had. I watch the sunset every day, talk to great people and have the opportunity to make my cocktails. Does it get much better? We have Happy Hour from 3:305pm everyday and now a TV for sports. So we are busy. Gotta know that.

MT: You came close to winning another competition last year. What was that drink all about? Can we get it at your bar?

GH: I got second place nationally. The cocktail competition was that all ingredients had to be from within 100 miles of where the drink was made. I used Okolehao, Chocolate manoa ginger bitters, Kona coffee and a Maui Brewing Company Coconut Porter Foam I made.

The rim is sugar in the raw. I just took it off the menu a couple weeks ago but I still can make it if people want it. It just takes a couple extra minutes to make the foam. I just did another cocktail with local organic honeycomb, rosemary and bourbon. It was unreal. I used fresh pressed pineapple, too.

MT: How did you start bartending?

GH: I loved making drinks for family parties as a kid. Still do to this day. I made the best Bloody Mary’s back then. I always loved tasting different things and blending items

MT: I didn’t even know we had a bartending school. What was it called?

GH: I went to the school years ago. It was called Valley Isle School of Bartending and Mixology. It was at this guy’s house in his backyard, in this huge cabana bar. His name was Rey Castillo. Great guy. Very talented.

GH: The Mill Camp Mojito was inspired by all the nationalities that worked the sugar cane plantation. There were Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Filipino [workers]. So I included kim chee powder for Koreans, shiso leaves for Japanese, ginger for Chinese and calamansi for Filipino. I wanted to use Ocean Vodka since it was made from sugar cane. All these nationalities make Hawaii what it is, the melting pot.

together when I cook. So doing this at the bar seems natural. I’ve been with Four Seasons 15 years. I opened the Vegas Four Seasons as a kitchen expo, working behind the chef’s line as well as a server and then moved to bartender. I also worked at Mandalay Bay as the pool assistant manager, taking care of the VIPs for the opening of that hotel. I went to bartending school here on Maui when I was 21.

MT: What kind of cocktails are you known for?

GH: My favorite drinks are combinations of ingredients that people normally wouldn’t put together. Things people usually don’t drink. I like to open their minds.

MT: What will the drinks of the future look like?

GH: The drinks of tomorrow will be more based on the flavors of the alcohol they include. They won’t be overbearing with juice and the added accompanying ingredients. I think gin is gonna make a huge part of new cocktails and also small batch alcohol. Pairing food with cocktails is going to become a popular option for people. Not just pairing wine with food. Don’t get me wrong–food and wine is and can be fantastic. Just the same, opening up your mind to cocktails with food can be an amazing experience.

Mill Camp Mojito 1 ½ oz Ocean Vodka 1 ½ oz calamansi lime juice 1 ¼ oz raw sugar simple syrup 3 shiso leaves 3 calamansi, halved 3 ginger slices (nickel size) Sugar cane stick Kim chee powder •Muddle the Shiso leaves and ginger together until the oil are extracted from both and the leaves break apart.

• Add Ocean Vodka, calamansi lime juice, raw sugar simple syrup and crushed ice.

Shake vigorously and pour into a stemmed tropical glass.

• Cut 3 Calamansi limes in half. Add 3 of the halves into the glass and stir lightly.

• Skewer the remaining 3 halves with the sugar cane stick and dip them into the kim chee powder.

• Place one shiso leaf and the cane skewer into the drink as garnishment. Enjoy!

MT: What makes a winning cocktail?

FS: Balance is first and foremost, followed by flavors and depth of a cocktail. When making a cocktail, you need flavors which come from sugar-based fruits. To balance the flavor, you need acid to cut too much sweetness and allow your taste buds to enjoy the various blends.

Depth comes in when the taste continues down your throat. Ultimately, a cocktail has to be sweet and tasty, with citrus and a touch of heat. A good example is the “Verde” cocktail that’s offered at Westin Maui’s Beach Bar and includes green Tabasco with cucumber, cilantro, sweet and sour and Patron Silver Tequila.

MT: What’s your behind-the-bar philosophy?

FS: Every cocktail has a story. With tropical climate and abundance of natural resources, the Hawaiian Islands provide a variety of fresh produce and delectable fruits that fit perfectly with this innovative and artful beverage concept. For me, I like creative, thoughtprovoking, interesting and a blend of flavors that someone would not traditionally think of.

It almost has a culinary twist, similar to how chefs design and create a dish with sustainable dining in mind. I particularly enjoy experimenting with ginger, cucumber, passion fruit and other locally-grown fruits and vegetables that someone wouldn’t usually find in the mainland. If I find guests who visit Hawaii regularly and have already tried Mai Tais, I share with them my unique version of Mai Tai by excluding pineapple and using instead fresh lime juice, ginger liqueur, passion fruit, mint, light aged rum and dark rum.

MT: What makes mixology interesting to you?

FS: It’s a way to challenge myself to continuously research and think outside the norm when designing new cocktails. Participating in contests such as Starwood’s Star Mixologist and World Mai Tai contest held on the island of Hawaii are great opportunities to meet like-minded bartenders and gather knowledge on new trends and innovative twists. I enjoyed the recent Mixology 101 organized during Ka‘anapali Fresh food and wine festival as I was fortunate to partner Southern Wine & Spirits director of mixology Chandra Lucariello in presenting beers with cocktails.

MT: What cocktails are on the horizon for you?

FS: I’m working on using lots of shrub (vin-

egars) where you can explore fruits to cook them down and make your own version. Bitters such as Lavender Bitters are yet another upcoming favorite. And with Maui having its own Maui Brewing Company, we have the opportunity to create beer cocktails such as the Hopped Up Blonde that I presented during Ka‘anapali Fresh.

Hokulani 1½ oz Pisco ¾ 0z St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur ½ oz fresh lime juice ½ oz Blueberry White Tea Simple Syrup 1 no kiwi slice 2 nos fresh blueberries 2 nos mint leaves 1 no starfruit slice • Add kiwi, blueberries and mint to a shaker.

• Lightly muddle the ingredients in the shaker.

• Add Pisco, lime juice, and tea syrup.

• Fill shaker with ice and shake.

• Pour all contents into serving glass .

• Garnish with starfruit slice.

Montage Kapalua Cane and Canoe has a delightful piano bar that has such a great vibe. The cocktails are superb, island-inspired and 50% off at happy hour 8-11 pm daily.

Pi Artisan Pizza, Lahaina Am I sensing some steampunk inspiration in the bar’s DIY pipe shelving at this new Lahaina pizza parlor? Either way, their local bar chef cocktails, wines and beer on tap are delish, and their Front Street al fresca sidewalk dining is Euro-chic.

Hali‘imaile Distilling Company Haliimailedistilling.com Another family run facility quietly expanding under construction is the Hali‘imaile Distilling Company. It’s the home of Pau Vodka, Sammy’s Beach Bar Rums and Paniolo Whiskey. Master Distiller Mark Nigbur is designing an unforgettable tasting room experience. They’ve procured the old Moondoggie brew tanks, they have a wall o’ whiskey casks and I’m even hearing about taxidermy chickens and moustaches. The Hali‘imaile tasting experience is not open yet, but it’s already kick ass. Pau Vodka had a sexy redesign of their bottle and are featured well at Mala, Honu and Mala Wailea. Paniolo Whiskey will be seen at a bar near you very soon.

Roasted Chiles, Kihei This casual Mexican eatery in Azeka Mauka Plaza formerly held Jawz Tacos and Zuriguidun. It’s quickly earning a rep for its langoustine enchiladas and who wouldn’t like to pair that with a Coronarita?

Spooky Sexy Halloween The Kit Kat Club does Tim Burton’s Graveyard Cabaret

the most popular. The Kit Kat Club Cabaret actually does a more rare style called “Cabaret Burlesque” that’s sexy but doesn’t involve much taking off of clothes. We use live singing and choreographed group dancing, which is very unusual in burlesque outside of Maui. Our shows are inspired equally by burlesque, musical theater and the early movie musicals. We create variety shows by collaborating with other Maui performers who share some of the same inspirations.

MT: I can’t even find a bra that fits. Where on Maui does Kit Kat Club get costumes?

he scintillating act of burlesque is taken to great heights with Maui’s own Kit Kat Club. The Club began one Halloween night seven years ago in Lahaina, and the lively action hasn’t slowed down. This weekend, Kit Kat Club celebrates by dancing in their undergarments with a tribute to Tim Burton at the Iao Theatre. We chatted with Ellen Peterson, the vivacious KKC founder, and Karen Stavash, the KKC co-owner, to find out who is behind those false eyelashes, and what Tim Burton’s skeletons have to do with it.

MAUITIME: Which came first Halloween or Kit Kat Club Cabaret?

ELLEN PETERSON: In addition to simply loving the combination of sexy meets scary, creepy or dark, Halloween allows us to be a bit more outrageous with our costumes and acts.

During Halloween season, adults are usually open, if not expecting, something more outlandish from us so this gives us some leeway in “pushing the envelope” a bit more with our choreography and subject matter. We appreciate that we can go a little more risqué during Halloween, so we embrace that.

Additionally, the first, official Kit Kat Club Cabaret performance was on Front Street on Halloween. We performed a chair song & dance to a song from the musical Cabaret. When the host of the show asked us our troupe’s name, on the spot we came up with the name Kit Kat Club Cabaret because that was the name of the club in the movie. Consequently, Halloween is always our “anniversary” and performing every Halloween has become a tradition for us.

KAREN STAVASH: We’ve got so much momentum now, we’ve got such good chemistry as a team and Kit Kat Club has always had a special energy of it’s own that always attracts wonderful people to work with and wonderful crowds that make our shows successful. It feels like it’s impossible to stop, especially when we come home to closets stuffed full of fun costumes! We get really

MT: Who is the Kit Kat Club? Will they all perform the show?

EP: There are seven members of Kit Kat Club and more than 10 star entertainers from some of Maui OnStage’s hit musicals in this production. For Kit Kat Club Cabaret, we have: myself, Jessica Dungans, Karen, Casey Murphy, Denise Green, Lily Lee Campbell and Trevor Arnholt.

Featured “triple threats” from Maui OnStage include Charles Cook, Felicia Chernicki, Jason Wulf, Sarah Loney, Dale Button, Sharleen Lagattuta, Steven Dascoulias and a handful of other Maui OnStage graveyard freaks. Isa Hansen is our special guest bellydancer and burlesque sensation Violetta Baretta from Honolulu will be featured at Friday night’s show. Douglas Deboer is the video/multimedia artist.

MT: I thought your shows were sexy... ‘Graveyard Cabaret’ sounds spooky.Which is it?

EP: Tim Burton’s Graveyard Cabaret is a fully choreographed, full-length, vaudevillian-style variety show that features many different performers addressing Tim Burton-themed (or inspired) song and dance acts. I am absolutely bewitched by the surreal way Tim Burton associates romance with the macabre, particularly in his darkly mysterious and extravagant, Gothic-era films. The numbers in this show all, in one way or another, espouse a surreal, Burtonesque gothic style.

MT: For those who don’t know, what should they expect at a burlesque show?

KS: You should never know what to expect at a burlesque show! A good burlesque show has a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor, some quirkiness in the staging– as if the performers are having a good laugh at themselves–along with a sexy, vintage style that might have a pinch of shock value but in a way that is really fun for the audience.

MT: Is there an age limit for burlesque?

How about a dress code?

KS: This eye-popping pageant promises to lure guests into their wildest and wackiest Halloween fantasies! Attendees are encouraged to dress in their Halloween costumes or fantasy attire. There’s music and mingling (and many photoops) after the show.

Because Maui adults are crazy for Halloween and seem to embrace it like some sort of hedonistic Mardi Gras, we set out to produce a Halloween stage show just for adults (we suggest 16 years and older), where they don’t have to go to a bar or maneuver the drunken revelry of Front Street to feel they are a part of an erotic playground.

MT: Are there members of your group that are not performing but have been a part of creating this?

KS: We’re all pretty much behind and in front of the scenes! However, I would like to give a special shout out to Daniel Vickrs who is helping us build a creepy Burtonesque tree for the stage.

MT: How is Maui Onstage involved?

EP: Maui OnStage supports, coaches and showcases many talented singers, actors and dancers. We wanted to combine talents with these performers in order to produce a full-length, quality show that would bring attention not only to the continued flair of Kit Kat Club, but to the endowment of Maui OnStage. Once it was decided that the cast of Tim Burton’s Graveyard Cabaret would be KKC and Maui OnStage performers, Maui OnStage gave us the technical and infrastructure support necessary to produce such a large, multimedia show.

MT: You had me at erotic playground and fantasy. How do you make each show unique?

EP: This is the second fulllength, gothic Halloween stage show that I’ve produced. After the huge success of last year’s PHANTOMÈ! at Iao Theater, Sarah Loney and I became inspired to team up in order to make this year’s show even more outlandish. Last year we relied solely on Doug Deboer’s visuals for our set design and backdrop. This year we are building a fantastical graveyard set on the stage that will interact with the visuals and characters in the show. We’ve also added a handful of additional entertainers to the cast and have put together close to 20 cabaret numbers to address this unique theme.

MT: How has the club matured over the years?

EP: We gals of KKC come up with costume ideas and then either modify a corset or bra, for example, or work with local seamstress to modify or create them. My co-producer, Sarah Loney, is the costumier for Maui OnStage and she has designed or otherwise created a creative concoction of costumes for this show–everything from glow in the dark skeletons to a fully outfitted steampunk circus!

GM: Hard to do in one word, but the one word would be… satisfying.

MT: Your music has crossed geographical and generational boundaries–what’s been the method to the madness?

A night of Unicorns, Whores and Hounds

M

aui is a hot bed for Celtic creativity. While our shores are a wee bit warmer than our Irish and Scottish sister islands, that hasn’t cooled our passion for Celtic music. Hamish Burgess of Maui Celtic has been promoting Celtic culture here for years, every Sunday his Maui Celtic Radio show, underwritten by the Irish Rovers, belts out the best international Celtic selections starting at 4pm (Bluesandroots.com).

At the moment, Burgess is with The Irish Rovers, and when they come to town this week on their 50th Anniversary Tour set to bid a fond “Farewell To Rovin,’” they’re asking any Celtic musicians to bring CDs of their music to submit for the syndicated show.

Call the Maui Arts and Cultural Center at 242-SHOW for tickets to the Friday October 24 show that starts at 7:30. The band stopped in one place just long enough to update us on their latest and last world tour.

MT: We read somewhere that you were the “International ambassadors of Irish Music.”

How has touring influenced your music?

deadly-I hate them, the food is usually not good, but other than that it’s wonderful.

Maui would be very nice. As a matter of fact we are counting the shores until we get to Maui, we’re looking forward to getting to Maui, we’re looking forward to getting to Hawaii and to relaxing.

MT: Why are live performances still important in this age of technology?

GM: Well, that’s just it, technology is wonderful and almost anybody can do it if they have a book, but playing music… You have to have a bit of heart and soul as well so live music will always be popular no matter what part of the world you’re in. People like to see live performances because they like to see the foibles of people, the mistakes, the good times and the bad times. That’s all part of acting and singing, so it’ll always be around.

IAN MILLER: Live performances are so important because people should have the experience of seeing, hearing, laughing, crying and enjoying the passion the artist put into their music/performances.

GEORGE MILLAR: We pick up ideas no matter where we go, we listen to all sorts of Celtic music, whether it’s Scottish or Irish or even in New Zealand. We pick up ideas and probably that’s what changes the band from year to year. We add new ideas.

SEAN O’DRISCOLL: Because you interact music with people live, not virtually.

MT: What’s your favorite part of touring?

MORRIS CRUM: Nothing replaces a live concert or music venue to experience the special two way communication and enjoy the ambience of watching and listening to a band, orchestra or solo artiste.

GM: Meeting the people of course! That’s what it’s all about; at the end of the night we go out and sign autographs and when you meet the people and you realize that they like you and they’ve supported us all these years.

We give something back to them and the fact that we do come out and talk to them and shake their hand, that’s the nice part of the journey. Nothing else is nice about it, the beds hurt your back, the long drives are

FRED GRAHAM: Because live bands such as The Irish Rovers actually make contact with their audiences, bring them into and make them part of the performance.

MT: What legacy does The Irish Rovers wish to leave behind?

GM: We would wish to leave the fact that we were a fun band, we weren’t controversial in any way probably, we were just a very family orient-

ed Celtic music band and we brought our wares to the world, and the world accepted them.

MT: What’s in store for the future of The Irish Rovers?

GM: We’re still touring, we’re finishing up our farewell tours and we are going to be doing special events and folk festivals, now and again.

So I think when you’re a musician or an actor/actress you always have it in your blood, you can’t just say I’m quitting on… Sept. 8 at 5 o’clock in the afternoon.You can’t just retire from music, it’s always in your blood. I’ll always be writing, we’ll always want to do some live performances, we just don’t want to do the daily grind that we’re doing now and we have done since the band began 50 years ago. We’re just going to cut back, we’re still going to meet each other hopefully once a year and do a two or three-week tour and some special events.

MT: What advice would you have given yourselves 40 years ago?

GM: Stay in fucking school for godsake. Get an education! Carry it on on weekends the way you’re doing it and finish school. I didn’t finish school and I didn’t go to university and I probably regret that a little bit, although I’ve had a wonderful career, a wonderful life. But we got lucky and not too many bands got lucky like we did, especially not playing rock and roll. My advice is if you are gonna get out of school and go right to your job and play music then you bloody well do it 14 hours a day.You better rehearse and write and rehearse and write and rehearse and rehearse! That’s how you become a band.You can’t just pick up a guitar and say, “I got three chords, right let’s start a band.”You have to know what you’re doing and you have to have good management somewhere along the way. Or if not good management, you have to manage your money and your affairs yourself. So that’s my advice.

GM: Not much method to the madness, other than just having a good time ourselves. We enjoy ourselves onstage and that goes over onto the audience, and they enjoy themselves too in most cases-as far as I know. We have not ever gotten into the political aspect of the Irish way of life, which we can certainly do that if we wanted to, but we don’t want to. We’re a mixed band, so we have always stayed with the happier songs and the uptempo songs and that’s probably why we’re successful.

MT: What music is currently on your MP3 players?

GM: Currently, I believe I’m listening to Jimmy Buffet, he’s got a new album and I quite like all of the tracks on the album. So I’m listening to Jimmy Buffet, and maybe it’s because we’re a wee bit like him, not in the same genre musically but we’re the same idea.

We’re just having a good time, Jimmy Buffet is like that too onstage, he has a great time and all of his fans have a good time. They have the parrot-heads, we have the potato-heads.

IM: I don’t have an iPod, although I do have about 60,000 tunes in my iTunes library. I like to listen to as many different kinds of music as possible. Since we are in New Zealand at the moment, I’ve been listening to some traditional Maori music.

GK: On the iPod... Guy Clark, Amos Lee, Willie K, Alan Stivell, Gary Moore, Sandy Denny, Billie Holiday, Red Garland, Five Hand Reel, Tower Of Power, Genesis, Opeth, Van Morrison, Dr John, The Beatles, The Bothy Band, The Band, Mastodon, Kate Bush, Martin Sexton, I could go on.

MT: What can The Irish Rovers fans look forward to in this farewell tour?

GM: They’re gonna get the usual, which they’ll expect to get. They’re gonna get “The Unicorn” and the “Black Velvet Band” and all those songs that they grew up on like we did. So we’ll be doing those songs but there’s also a whole raft of new songs that we’ve asserted into the show, which I think they’ll enjoy as well. They’re gonna have two hours of fun. Soft Bore ‘Addicted’ is about sex, but it’s not sexy ★★★★★ Rated R/ 106 Min.

T

he subject matter may be sexual addiction but the movie’s only interested in desire, lust and the joys of inhibition-free sex. Addicted, based on the book by Zane (the erotic novelist, not Billy), is every bit about the dangers of sex addiction as Cheech and Chong movies are about the dangers of pot smoking.

Sharon Leal, an actress of considerable talent and dazzling beauty, plays Zoe, a successful art curator with two cute kids and an exceptionally good looking husband.

How good looking? He’s played by Boris Kodjoe, who all but embodies the “perfect husband.” Remember the line from Salt N Pepa’s “Shoop” that goes “a body like Ahnold with a Denzel face...” That’s this guy.

After an especially perfect day, Zoe and her abs-tastic husband have an enthusiastic bout of sex, to which he falls asleep, not wanting to go a third round. Zoe just lays there, unhappy. She gets up, goes to her laptop and downloads a stream of pornography. Just to be clear about what’s taking place, we see her pull out a large, buzzing vibrator, resembling an alien death ray from a sci-fi B-movie. We’re supposed to be gasping, oh no, Zoe has a problem. All I could think was, how could she hide something that crazy in her desk drawer? Wouldn’t her kids find it while searching for crayons?

While looking to procure new works of art, Zoe meets the acclaimed artist, Quinton Canosa. It’s lust-at-first sight, as Quinton unleashes a tsunami of corny one-liners and looks at Zoe the way a timber wolf gazes at a flock of sheep. William Levy plays Quinton, whose accent, lothario appearance and way with cheesy pick-up lines reminded me of Olivier Martinez in Unfaithful. The frequently shirtless Quinton doesn’t waste any time, asking to paint Zoe in the nude.

Quinton also has a hanger-on mistress that we know is up to no good, as she wears leg warmers in every scene.

In addition to scenes where Zoe tells all to her therapist (appealingly played by Tasha Smith), we also get Zoe’s late night encounters in slick sex clubs, in which everyone attending (and, for that matter, all of the extras in this movie) resemble catalog worthy models. Not for nothing, this is where she encounters actorturned-model Tyson Beckford.

Rather than fully recap the plot, let me pose the story in the form of a Cosmopolitan-style question: Ladies, if you had to choose between having sex with your handsome husband, your exotic, chiseled lover or Ralph Lauren model Beckford, which one would you choose?

Addicted has a mostly African-American cast–Leal, Kodjoe and Smith are Tyler Perry regulars and the film resembles Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage

Counselor in many ways.Yet, the film’s biggest influence isn’t Perry but Zalman King, the producer/director of dozens of softcore erotic dramas, many of which became late night staples on Cinemax.

Most famous for making 9 and a Half Weeks and Wild Orchid, King’s staple is a scene of actors wearing masks while attending a posh, underground sex club (a scene this movie tries hard to duplicate).

King’s movies sported awful dialogue but had guts and never wagged a finger at their audience. Addicted wants it both ways: to be on the level with the harrowing Michael Fassbender vehicle Shame and a titillating sex fantasy, a celluloid Harlequin Romance.

Get off my car!

The title credits slither and leave a red hue, indicating how ready this is for late night cable airings. Perry’s Temptation didn’t offer as much skin and sex but is trashier and far more entertaining. Addicted adapts a thriller angle too late in the game,

draws out the story long after we’re done caring. It’s too dumb, obvious and lacking enough cheap thrills to fully rate as a guilty pleasure... and no, after a staggering film debut, that magnum-sized vibrator never makes a return appearance. ■

I was poised to type your horoscope when a falling yellow leaf blew in the open window and landed under my fingers on the keyboard, prompting me to rethink exactly how I was going to word this week’s fortune.
