RICK CHATENEVER'S FRIEND LIST Every Tuesday since January, The Maui News runs a column on Page A3 called “Maui Connections.” Written by Rick Chatenever (who used to edit the paper’s Maui Scene in-

from the beginning of the column on Jan. 28 of this year to Aug. 26 (also, to make things easier on myself, I only counted a name once per column, even though sometimes Chatenever will drop a name repeatedly in the same column). MAUI CHAMBER BACKS AIONA AGAIN

Just as they did four years ago, the Maui Chamber of Commerce has backed former Republican Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona for Hawaii Governor, according to an Aug. 22 Chamber news release. While the Chamber hasn’t yet released its report explaining why it’s backing Aiona (or anyone else, for that matter), Chamber President Pamela Tumpap gushed over Aiona four years ago in a Oct. 7, 2010 Hawaii Free Press post: “We appreciate Duke Aiona’s strong support for small businesses, especially on the Neighbor Islands, and his plan for long-term economic recovery,” Tumpap said. “He has met personally with several of our members and talked in depth on the issues we believe will grow the local economy. Time and again, Duke Aiona has proven to be a steadfast leader, advocating for small businesses and advancing fiscally responsible policies. We stand beside him, pledging our support, eager for the leadership and positive changes he will bring.”

The endorsements don’t include any candidates running for federal races–”Given Hurricane Iselle, we were unable to schedule interviews with the candidates for the Federal races, but hope to shortly,” Tumpap said in her Aug. 22 news release–and the list of Chamber-approved names that has been made public is hardly surprising. Even the Chamber’s endorsement of state Senator Roz Baker, D–6th District, isn’t too outlandish, though the Chamber declined to endorse her two years ago. Remember, fellow Democrat Terez Amato just lost a Primary challenge against Baker based largely on the incumbent’s close ties to major corporate interests.

The Chamber mostly loves incumbents. In the various Maui County races, it’s no shocker that they’re backing newcomer (and darling of the carpenters union) Ka‘ala Buenconsejo over incumbent Elle Cochran in the West Maui race. What is kind of a shock is that, once again, they’re throwing their support to challenger Joe Blackburn over popular incumbent Mike Victorino in the Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu race.

ACLU SUES OVER SPECIAL PUNA ELECTION When I was talking with political analysts immediately following the Aug. 9 Hawaii Primary Election, I kept hearing the same thing: the situation down in Puna on the Big Island was a mess and it would be weeks before we got closure on the very tight U.S. Senate race, which the day after the election was separated by a mere 1,600 or so votes. This was because state law gave the Office of Elections three weeks to get things organized.

But instead of taking the time they had, the state Elections office decided to hold a special election in Puna just one week later. Democratic Senate candidate Colleen Hanabusa challenged that, but the courts rejected her case. After the election and U.S. Senator Brian Schatz came out the top Democrat, Hanabusa decided to pass on filing another challenge. But the ACLU’s Hawaii office had no such qualms, and filed a suit on Aug. 21 in the Hawaii Supreme Court saying the quick timing of the election disenfranchised voters.

“Although the votes in question may not change the outcome of any of the various races, the ACLU filed this suit because the right to vote is a cornerstone of our democracy,” ACLU Hawaii Senior Staff Attorney Daniel Gluck said in an Aug. 21 news release. “Every vote counts equally–this is

That’s when the duplicates started to appear and things really started getting interesting–especially concerning the documentary When The Mountain Calls, which Chatenever wrote.

But Chatenever hasn’t even had his column a year, and he’s already boosted his movie at least seven times. There are 2,500 teams nationally participating in the USTA Junior Team Tennis League. Each region hosts a sectional championship to determine if their team's going to the Nationals. Royal Lahaina finished thirteenth nationally in 2013 and is hoping for a big win this year.

The Royal Lahaina Tennis Club is currently paying for its participation in the national tournament through personal funds and a travel stipend from USTA. GREEN BUILDING PAU HANA Opportunities to make commercial buildings more environmentally friendly will be the focus of an Aug. 28 pau hana at the University of Hawaii Maui College. The event, hosted by UHMC’s Sustainable Living Institute, will feature Green Building Hawaii’s John Bendon and Alex de Roode, who are recognized throughout the state as consultants for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) projects. They will discuss several topics including energy efficiency, lighting, PV/ renewable energy, air-conditioning, purchasing and facilities management.

LEED is an internationally recognized rating system that evaluates buildings for their wise resource management. The rating system is most often publicized when new buildings are certified with a LEED Silver, Gold or Platinum rating. In 2009, the Montessori School of Maui was the first facility in Maui County to gain LEED NC certification with a Silver rating. This year, Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort achieved LEED NC Silver.

COUNTY CLOSE TO REVISING LAHAINA SIGN GUIDES Because the County of Maui considers much of Lahaina Town to be an “historic district,” there are a ton of rules and regulations governing various design elements beyond that found in standard commercial areas. Chief among these are the guidelines governing the

design and placement of signs.

“Historically, signs in Lahaina have been simple designs fabricated with traditional materials,” states the county’s Sign Design Guidelines for Lahaina Historic Districts, which was last revised in 2001. “This approach to design should be used when considering signs within the Lahaina Historic Districts during this current time period... [S]igns are meant to be a restrained visual element within the composition of historically designed building facades and the pedestrian scale and orientation of the street scene.”

But now the county’s Cultural Resources Commission is considering changing those guidelines.

“The revisions aim to make the guidelines more clear and consistent, allow a broader choice of materials and design elements, and provide easier enforcement,” Michele McLean, the Planning Department’s deputy director, said in an Aug. 20 county news release. “Commercial signs in the Lahaina Historic Districts require permits issued by the Department of Planning; exceptions can be granted by the CRC.” They’ve been working all summer on it–and even held two public meetings that took testimony–and are now getting close to making some decisions. In fact, they could vote on the new guidelines at their upcoming meeting on Thursday, Sept.

4. Because the commission will accept both written and verbal testimony at this hearing, county planners are urging the public–especially Lahaina residents and merchants–to attend.

The Royal Lahaina Tennis Club’s Junior Team is seeking funds to help the team compete in the National Championships, which are being held Oct. 16-19 in South Carolina. The club recently won the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Junior Team Tennis Spring Section Championship for its 14 years of age and under 3.0 Division. This is the second consecutive year the Club qualified to compete in the National Championships.

“Going to the Nationals is all the kids are talking about,” said coach Lee Killett. “From their experience last year, they know they can improve on their fine showing. They have a great deal of pride and have gained in maturity and strength, which will serve them well.”

Coach Killett, who played competitively at the University of Hawaii, and coach Jean Okada, who played professional tennis and ranked in the top 200 in the world, started the club three years ago. It began as the Royal Lahaina Junior Tennis Program at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch. They later joined up with Maui Junior Team Tennis League at the behest of Manny Fernando, father of two of the Royal Lahaina group.

“We have an extremely close-knit, highly committed group of young players and their parents and the Royal Lahaina are very supportive,” Killett said.

“The facilities at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch are second to none and, even though the majority of our kids come from the other side of the island, we all enjoy being with one another.”

But designing a new building to meet qualifications for a LEED certification isn’t the only way businesses can improve their environmental impact. Bendon and de Roode will present an overview of the less well known Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance (EBOM), a sustainability rating system that can help existing buildings addresses issues to improve their place in a green environment.

Event organizers say that the information provided about EBOM could be quite beneficial to Maui County.

Green Building Hawaii has recently guided the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa and Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB) through the process of applying for LEED EBOM. With attention to energy efficiency, water use, waste management, landscape strategies, housekeeping products and habits and customer engagement, these large facilities are leading the way in internationally recognized standards.

The event will take place in Ike Lea, the LEED Silver Science Building on the UHMC campus. The public is invited to attend and no registration is required. The event starts at 6pm. THE NEW NORMAL The ubiquitous “sexting” phenomenon continues to flourish. A Washington state agency suspended the license of anesthesiologist Arthur Zilberstein in June after finding that he had exchanged sexually explicit text messages–during surgeries. And one of the emerging occupational skills for Emergency Medical Technicians, according to first responders interviewed in a June Wall Street Journal feature, is merely holding up blankets at accident scenes–to block onlookers from their apparently uncontrollable urge to take gruesome photos to send to their friends.

WAIT, WHAT? In Multnomah County, Oregon, in July, a Romanian princess pleaded guilty to cockfighting. Irina Walker, 61, was born in Switzerland where her father, King Michael I, lived after abdicating the throne.

Attempting to rob a restaurant, he was turned down by employees and customers, then turned down by two potential carjack victims (the first of whom added insult by pulling out her cellphone camera and shooting video), before giving up just as police arrived. (His only take was the $15 he had swiped from the restaurant’s tip jar.)

CORRECTION Last week’s column cited a London Daily Mirror compilation of foods from around the world. It appears not only that “Squeez Bacon” was merely an April Fool’s joke from 2009 but that, sadly, in the ensuing five years, food science has not yet been able to make a real squeezed bacon. ■

The Simple Answer Talking story with SOJA’s Jacob Hempill

I

totally thought I was burned out on Reggae music. I didn’t expect to hear anything new. Then SOJA released it's fifth album, Amid the Noise and Haste. Once my ears got a hold of this album, I couldn’t stop listening and evangelizing these songs.

The band’s second release on the label ATO Records has made some history already. It’s the first time SOJA worked with a six-time Grammy winning producer Supa Dups and the first time Dups has done a whole album–17 tracks–rather than just singles. It’s moving swiftly up the charts, already sitting at number 20 on the Worlds Best Selling Albums list after two weeks.

Jacob Hemphill, the voice of the band, took a moment to talk with us in advance of their Friday, Aug. 29 show at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (doors open at 5pm):

MT: SOJA has embraced social media, with a lot of engagement on Facebook and Twitter. How has digital and social media affected your music career?

JH: Well, social media has let people have a sense of empowerment even though they use it wrong and abuse it sometimes. It really lets people connect. Where before it was record labels and movie studios and newspapers that were telling people what to believe, what to listen to and how to think. Now with social

MT: Hawaii has a special connection with SOJA. Why do you think Hawaii is a fertile ground for your sound?

JH: Hawaii was the first time we ever read our words in the newspaper or saw our picture on a billboard or heard our songs on the radio or saw ourselves on TV or played

MAUITIME: What does Amid the Noise and Haste mean to you?

JACOB HEMPHILL: The basic idea behind naming all the records is a theme.

Born in Babylon (2009) was about a kid who lives in a rich part of the world. That album was how do I become a positive change in the whole world, not just in my realm. Strength to Survive (2012) is about the environment and how do we fix everything that is going on. Amid the Noise and Haste (2014) is about what if we had all the answers to these problems that seem so insurmountable and so hard to deal with.

What if there was a simple answer and that answer was love?

MT: Is there a lot of pressure for SOJA to do well on the Billboard charts?

JH: No, no, no, I don’t care at all about that stuff. Success to me has already been achieved. I have enough food, and shelter and water, forever. What I care about is how can I make this place better before I go. The way to do that is to reach more people. Our Facebook numbers say 3.5 million and if you look a Bob Marley’s, it’s 500 million.

My goal has been to follow in Bob Marley’s footsteps and the bigger we get, the more of an impact we have on both the Earth and the humans who live on it.

media you can make your own decision. Giving a microphone to people who don’t have a microphone has always been my favorite side personal thing that I do. Now social media lets me do that times a million.

MT: Do you feel you have come a long ways since MySpace?

JH: The band started coming out right when MySpace started to get popular and we used that stuff to no end. Without people being able to make their own decision about what they want to listen to and who they want to listen to, I don’t think SOJA would have ever existed. Because I don’t think there is a record label in the world that would have said, “Oh! Five white guys playing reggae

for thousands of people. Hawaii was the first time we realized that maybe this is our destiny. So we are forever grateful to every one of these islands. Hawaii was the first stoke of the fire for SOJA and we are forever grateful.

MT: Who are your heroes?

JH: Bob Marley was the best connector who ever lived in music. Steve Jobs was the great connector who took computers, that very vital part of our news society, and made them human. All my heroes are like that–the kings and queens of connecting with the human condition.

MT: One track, “Your Song,” is sung with Damian Marley. You talk about going

over the edge and needing your people to bring you back. What’s that about?

JH: The thing people don’t realize about doing this job, and it is a job, is that you play 180 shows in a year and you are never home.

You live in a bus, you live in a hotel room, you live in an airport.You live on a passport.You miss birthdays, you miss kids being born, you miss weddings, you miss funerals, you miss all these really important moments and all these people that you are so in love with and you give up your whole life just to do this.

What if the real truth is my real family is everyone, every member of the human race, and what if my real job is to bring my family closer together? What if my loved ones that truly love me see me rise as a leader who brings people together under the motive of love and compassion and those people who truly love me at home say, “Don’t come home–stay out there. This is your destiny.” The only way you can think positively like that is if the fans cheer and sing the songs with their hands in the air because they let you know that this is not a hypothesis, this is a destiny.

That’s what this song is about. Melancholy as it seems, it’s actually really positive.

MT: One of your Maui shows was at a beach park in Kihei, about as underground and indie as it gets. Now you’re doing a show at the MACC with Michael Franti & Spearhead and the Murs. Do you think your fans have any growing pains about seeing SOJA mature?

JH: Yeah absolutely. You know whenever you follow something from the start, you kinda hate to see it get big. You like to see it grow but you hate to see everyone else loving this little special thing that only you used to love. I understand how that is. But I urge people to also remember that the whole point of this music is not really to have some cool little band that you know about [but] to try to make this world a better place and to change the mentality and consciousness of people everywhere. Been There, Done That There’s nothing new to ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For’ ★★★★★ Rated R / 102 Min.

I

n the opening scenes of this belated follow-up to the 2005 movie Sin City, we open up in a bar, full of drunken slobs, all ogling Jessica Alba as she does a scantily dressed dance on stage.

Mickey Rourke, returning as “Marv” under layers of makeup, is in the audience, and the scene oozes with carefully orchestrated sleaze. Instead of feeling happy to be back in the world of Frank Miller’s pulp noir world, all I could think was, “I’ve seen this before.”

I knew the movie lost me when the first of many close-ups of Ms. Alba’s derriere made me roll my eyes with déjà vu.

The story: Alba’s tormented dancer is longing for her slain savior (Bruce Willis, in a very small, awkward cameo). She seeks revenge from a gleefully evil senator (Powers Boothe, appearing to have a blast). We also meet a card shark (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), whose good luck takes a violent turn. Meanwhile, a horny lug (Josh Brolin) can’t resist the charms of his femme fatale ex (Eva Green), who apparently hates wearing clothes.

Robert Rodriguez’s film resembles a Raymond Chandler nightmare, shot

in faux black and white (it looks digital and lacks the beauty of a real black and white film). Certain characters and pieces of their attire are randomly in color, a beauty of an effect this movie utilizes from the first scene to the last. I found the first movie to be over-praised, particularly in its technique. While many claimed the style of Rodriguez’s film to be groundbreaking, he simply took a great visual, established briefly in Francis Ford Coppola’s Rumble Fish and Lars Von Trier’s Europa, and extended it for the entire running time. Also, despite the good character work, the stories were more grotesque than gripping.

In the original, I was blown away by Rourke’s humanity as a brute (Marv is more a story gimmick than a tragic figure this time), loved the Willis/Alba tale and was disinterested in the rest of the gallery of criminals. In this second helping, I never connected with any of these people, despite a few good performances. Brolin, more than any of his costars, seems like he was born in Sin City, Green plays her role to the hilt and Alba’s backside once again outshines her acting.

I missed Carla Gugino. Levitt and Dennis Haysbert seemed out of place and I was

proud of myself for recognizing Stacey Keach under pounds of makeup.

It’s refreshing to see a comic book movie devoid of heroes, super or otherwise, a reminder that graphic novels (and their film adaptations) aren’t always for children. Unlike the shoddy Machete Kills, Rodriguez has made a real movie. Yet, I think he’s taken Sin City as far as it can go.

The intentionally tawdry dialogue felt especially stale (even Brolin can’t sell the moldy “I was born at night, not last night”). Aside from the non-stop misogyny (a Film Noir staple, unfortunately) and gore, the stories don’t have a real kick.

These supposedly shocking tales are as

long in the tooth as Marv.

Film goers old enough to buy a ticket to an R-rated movie can ogle naked women and some inventively cruel beatings. You get actors in various degrees of undress (everyone from Green to Ray Liotta bares some skin), movie stars sporting hideous disfigurements and some cool imagery but this is a freak show with visual panache and little else. Style is everything here but these twisted tales of perversion and moral rot only deliver hollow excess.

Once again Rodriguez is overly faithful to the source material. Rather than mimicking the frames of Miller’s comic books, how about making us care? ■

Folks are queuing up outside, waiting to partake of your cuisine, bar, wit, and hospitality, and chances are you’re eager to give it to them. It’s more or less a win-win, as far as I can tell, unless you resist it–and I can’t for the life of me imagine why you would.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Loneliness and disconnection are familiar feelings, no? Most of those who love you haven’t a clue you feel that way, though, because your perpetually cheery disposition gives no sign. They imagine a glamorous life with friends all over the world, without once considering how isolating it can feel to have a circle of friends so widespread that half of them don’t know each other. This doesn’t lend itself to the feeling of family and connectedness you sometimes want badly. However, it is there for the having: all you have to do is let those nearby know you crave it.

Therefore you tend to suspect others of harboring similar sticky messes, and so an offhand comment can get taken way too seriously. Stop being so insecure. You’re the most amazing person most of your friends know, so it’s astounding that you could be so completely unsure of yourself. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Extravagance is second nature to you. Why buy the cheap Hershey’s shit when you can purchase imported 70 percent cocoa dark chocolate that’s five times the price? What happens, though, when your artist friends can’t keep up with you, financially? I wouldn’t dare to suggest that you deprive yourself of all the pleasures you so dearly love. But perhaps this week would be a good time to: 1. Learn the joys of slumming it, and how much fun can be had on the cheap; 2. Play Mommy or Daddy and treat your impoverished buds, or 3. Ideally, a little of both of these.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Self-sabotage isn’t your style, darling. You’re more savvy than that, aren’t you? If you’re going to cheat, you’ll do it because you want to, not because you secretly want to get caught, right?

Then why is there so much evidence to the contrary, evidence that points to a desire to really screw yourself over? I just keep checking and rechecking my astrological forecast and seeing that one little thing you’re up to that’s just not on the up and up. Your hackles are up. For some reason, every defense instinct is on full alert this week. Sadly, your gut impulses are way off. It’s highly unlikely that anyone is actually out to screw you over, despite supposedly ample evidence to the contrary.

Beating up your adversaries might make you feel better, until the consequent lawsuits and hassles ensue, when you might feel pretty stupid for acting on misdirected suspicions. What to do? Sit tight.
