required reports, budgets and reviews/ audits,” representing the Executive Board at meetings and “maintain[ing] a service-oriented office.” Qualifications for the job include a Bachelor’s Degree, a mere 10 years working “within a criminal justice agency/ program,” an ability to get a Top Secret Security Clearance and “proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Word, Access, PowerPoint and Excel.”

Nothing says “leadership” like an ability to use Microsoft PowerPoint.

Considering that this May 16 Huffington Post story says that initial estimates were that 3,200 same-sex couples would marry in Hawaii in the first three years after the law went into effect, it would seem that the state could easily best that figure in the first year. And while this is great news for civil rights advocates, the news release also in-

GAY MARRIAGE STATS ‘IMPRESSIVE’ Of the 9,640 marriages registered in the State of Hawaii since the state legalized samesex marriage on Dec. 2, 2013, 1,417 of those have been samesex couples, according to a May 15 news release from Equality Hawaii Foundation. The news release, which is based on data gathered by the state Department of Health (DOH), calls the 1,417 figure “impressive.”

“While we don’t measure rights in monetary terms, [this data] confirms economic studies that it made no sense for Hawaii to deny people their rights,” Equality Hawaii Foundation Director Don Bentz said in the news release.

Other data points included in the news release provide an interesting snapshot of Hawaii’s same-sex marriage industry. For instance, the DOH says that of those 1,417 marriages, 721 were between two men and 696 were between two women. And of those marriages, 368 of the malemale marriages (roughly 51 percent) were between one or two non-Hawaii residents. Looking at the femalefemale marriages, 374 (roughly 54 percent) were between one or two non-Hawaii residents.

After just five years as Maui County Police Chief, Gary Yabuta is moving to Oahu to take over as director of a federal anti-drug program. There is, of course, great irony in the fact that Yabuta’s leaving to head some drug war office–What, Maui County’s part in the endless War on Drugs isn’t going so hot?–but the Maui Police Department will have none of that.

“On 05/16/14, Chief of Police Gary YABUTA of the Maui Police Department told his command staff that their success as leaders, coupled with their creativity to fight our community’s crime threats, have made the Chief’s decision to retire an easier one,” stated a May 16 Maui Police press release. “He wants every officer and every civilian worker of the Maui Police Department to know how proud he is of each one of them.”

In the May 17 Maui News, Maui Police Commissioner Roger Dixon was more succinct: “To me, leadership is about people.”

Um, that’s supposed to be a compliment, right? Because saying “leadership is about people” is every bit as informative as saying “history is about the past.”

Seriously, I can’t be the only one in this county who thinks all this is nonsense. By its own admission, the Maui PD is having troubles fighting this nation’s pointless Drug War. “The importation, distribution, sales, and use of illicit narcotics continue to be a significant problem for Maui County as a whole,” states the department’s 2012 Annual Report, the most recent annual report made available to the public. “Illicit narcotics are often attributed to other crime problems such as thefts, burglaries, assaults, sexual assaults, abuse of family/

household members, and others.

The division’s goal continues to be the disruption and dismantling of drug trafficking organizations and to intercept illegal drugs prior to the drugs infiltrating our communities.”

Though Yabuta’s been chief for just five years–his predecessor, Tom Phillips, was chief for nearly 11 years–his “leadership,” as Dixon put it, has included the purchase of a giant Bearcat armored truck more suitable to Afghanistan than Maui; the whole Allison Moore debacle, in which a decorated Maui cop spent years secretly addicted to methamphetamine while fooling her colleagues (like Yabuta, who gave her more than a thousand dollars worth of his leave time) into thinking her health problems were due to nonexistent cancer; and the general criminalization of people–like this paper’s publisher–who attempt to take photographs of Maui Police Officers on duty, in public. Sounds like grounds for a promotion to me!

If, that is, Yabuta’s new job is actually a step up. Starting in July, Yabuta will become Director of the Hawaii High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), which is a federal grant program run out of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

The official hiring notice for the position states that the Director salary is “currently $117,237 (including Hawaii locality pay), plus up to 30% fringe benefits and a car allowance.” In terms of salary, this is substantially less than the current Maui Police Chief’s $135,000 a year.

What’s more, the HIDTA Director’s post doesn’t seem to be more than a desk job. “The incumbent is employed through a yearly contract with a HIDTA fiduciary, and serves at the pleasure of the Hawaii Executive Board,” states the Director hiring notice. Job responsibilities include supervising HIDTA staff, directing “development/submission of

cluded a sobering quote from Equality Hawaii Foundation donor Anita May Rosenstein about the larger world of discrimination that same-sex couples still live in: “But the fact is that the majority of states still prohibit people like my friends Joanne and Denise from having a wedding like the one we are celebrating, and that’s not right. The LGBT communities here in Hawaii and in communities across our nation face challenges like the treatment of seniors, the issues of gay youth being bullied in schools, and any number of issues involving equitable access to social services. So while we are celebrating the wonderful and in some ways, historical moment, we cannot lose track of the fact that there is still a great deal of work to be done to eliminate discrimination in all its forms.” ■

MAUI WHALE SANCTUARY VOLUNTEER WINS AWARD The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (NMSF) has selected Maui resident Robyn Walters as the 2014 Vol-

the National Marine Sanctuary System in the areas of research, monitoring, enforcement, education and outreach, and management advisory. Walters’ work supports the national marine sanctuary in Hawaii during a particularly important time, as the sanctuary is proposing to shift from a single species focus on humpback whales to an ecosystem-based approach, according to NMSF. “Every year it is difficult to select only one of 14 tremendously qualified Volunteers of the Year from the sanctuary sites to recognize nationally,” said NMSF President and CEO Jason Patlis. “The service of all the sanctuary volunteers is truly inspirational, and recognizing the volunteer programs is one of the most important – and most gratifying – ways that the NMSF supports the national marine sanctuary system.”

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a private, non-profit organization that was created to assist the federally managed National Marine Sanctuary Program with education and outreach programs, was designed to preserve, protect and promote meaningful opportunities for public interaction with the nation’s marine sanctuaries. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is administered by a partnership of NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the State of Hawaii through the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR). The sanctuary works to protect humpback whales through research, education, conservation and stewardship.

Currently, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is seeking to fill two primary

and four alternate seats on its advisory council. The council ensures public input into sanctuary matters and provides advice to sanctuary management. The two primary seats are business/commerce and tourism. The sanctuary is also looking to fill four alternate seats: Native Hawaiian, Hawaii County, Honolulu County and commercial shipping.

“The members of our advisory council represent an extremely important element of our community,” said Chow.

“Their input, experience and expertise assist sanctuary managers in making informed and timely decisions on how best to protect and conserve our important cultural and natural resources.”

Alternates attend meetings when primary members are not available and assume a seat if a primary member resigns.

All candidates are selected based on their expertise and experience in relation to the seat for which they are applying, community and professional affiliations and views regarding the protection and management of marine resources.

There’s less than two weeks to go before we get the 16th annual Maui Film Festival, which will run 12 days and show a whole bunch of artsy and independent films in Wailea and at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

As always, the festival will also hand out a few awards to actors who’ve done something above and beyond appearing in the latest Transformers film. It’s a pretty sweet deal for an actor–fly to Maui, get a prize on Maui, watch movies on Maui, answer a few questions from reporters on Maui and then, when you get the time, enjoy yourself on Maui.

This year, according to festival director Barry Rivers, they’re giving out five awards, the biggest of which will go to Lupita Nyong’o, who won this year’s best supporting actress Academy Award for12 Years A Slave.

Other luminaries headed to the festival include Emma Roberts, Evan Rachel Wood, Joe Manganiello (who produced La Bare) and Hawaii’s best known promoter Shep Gordon, who is also the subject of a new Mike Myers film Supermensch, which will also screen at the festival.

Walters began her volunteer work with the national marine sanctuary in Hawaii in 2010. Last year alone, she logged more than 450 service hours. Her volunteer work encompasses several responsibilities.

Walters is a public lecturer; a school group educational activities leader; a visitor center docent; a meeting organizer; a sanctuary representative at community outreach events; a speaker and participant on whale watch cruises; a volunteer trainer and mentor; and a leader in citizen science initiatives.

“Robyn Waters embodies the selfless commitment of citizens in sanctuary communities nationwide who lend their time and expertise to help us achieve our mission,” said Daniel J. Basta, director, NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. “Our volunteers are an important part of our team and a reason for our success.”

Walters will be recognized with other honorees–U.S. Senator Carl Levin and Joint Ocean Commission Initiative co-chairs William Ruckelshaus and Norm Mineta–on June 10 in Washington D.C. She also has been invited to deliver remarks on her work and importance of volunteerism for national marine sanctuaries. The awards gala is held in conjunction with Capitol Hill Ocean Week (CHOW), Washington’s premier ocean-focused conference. CHOW 2014 will take place June 10-12 at the Newseum and bring together policymakers, industry leaders, academics, scientists, and conservationists to shape marine policy and provoke conversation about critical ocean and coastal issues.

“We could not be more proud of Robyn and all of the sanctuary volunteers that she represents,” said Malia Chow, Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary superintendent. “Robyn’s commitment and dedication over the past years has been truly outstanding and we are thrilled that she is bringing this prestigious award home to Hawaii.”

PROM DRAFT A week before the National Football League held its 2014 Draft Day in May, a large contingent of junior and senior boys staged their own draft day at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, California, “dividing up” the available girls to ask to the upcoming prom. As in the NFL, the drafters “scout” the draftees, and a “rule book” notes the draft’s boundaries (e.g., this year, sophomore girls are eligible). The girls, of course, can decline the invitation, but the draft, as in the NFL, is designed to discourage a selected girl from being “poached” by “competing” boys. Obviously, many in the community expressed horror at the draft, with the principal denouncing it and urging parents to rein in their sons, but one of the drafted girls wrote that the whole thing was just “fun” and “is not, was never, and will never ever be used to objectify the girls.”

Skylar King, 28, filed a lawsuit in Clayton, Mo., in April against dentist Mark Meyers (and his Same Day Dentures clinic) for a 2009 session in which Meyers somehow obtained King’s consent to extract all 32 of his teeth and provide dentures, promptly after obtaining $5,235 on King’s mother’s credit card. King, who was seeking treatment for an abscessed tooth, said Dr. Meyers warned that he was at risk of “fatal blood poisoning” unless all teeth were yanked. Dr. Meyers insisted that King actually requested the procedure, even though X-rays revealed that at least 28 of the teeth were treatable.

THIS WEEK IN STUPID ATMS As of late March, the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Basford, England, still had an operational ATM on an outside wall even though its screen and controls were only 15 inches off the ground, forcing customers to bend over or kneel down to get cash. A Sainsbury’s spokesman, shown a photo by a reporter of a user squatting “incredibly uncomfortabl[y],” said no one had complained, but that the store would look into moving the machine. The only explanation offered for the placement was that the store is located on a hill.

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Wellma “Tootie” Shafer, 46, was fired as a cashier at the Last Chance Market in Russell, Iowa, after a customer reported her engaging in “sexual” banter at the register. Her boss, Rick Braaksma, explained, “We cannot... talk about adult situations in front of other customers,” and when Shafer sought unemployment compensation, Braaksma challenged her application. However, among the items Last Chance sells are Wake the F--Up Coffee, The Hottest F---ing Sauce (noted, the label states, for its “ass-burning quality”), and The Hottest F---ing Nuts (all product names using the explicit “F word”), and a state administrative judge granted Shafer benefits, showing (according to an April Des Moines Register report) little sympathy for the store’s contradictory policy.

NEEDS BUDDHISM REFRESHER COURSE An unnamed 40-year-old man was charged in Briec, France, in May for a February incident in which his cat knocked over his statue of Buddha, demolishing it. TRANSITION HAS BEEN HELL ON AVERAGE, 22 VETERANS KILL THEMSELVES EVERYDAY IN THE U.S. ON JAN. 19, ONE OF THEM WAS MY FRIEND CHRIS

Andy Greene was in the Southern California ski resort town of Mammoth when he got the call. It was 1:30am on Saturday, Jan. 18, and the Long Beach resident was sleeping, so the call went to voicemail. After sun-up, Greene checked his phone. The message was from Chris Atencio.

Greene had met Atencio more than a decade earlier while they were working as sales clerks at the North Face in nearby Orange County. In 2002, Atencio had joined the U.S. Army, but they’d remained in contact.

Then in July 2013, the Army discharged Atencio, and he moved back to OC. They’d seen each other a few times since then, and had traded emails just 10 days earlier.

“Andy? This is Chris Atencio,” the voicemail began. “I’m happy as fuck that you got married, but I’m bummed as fuck that you’ve called me one and a half times since I’ve been home in six months. Ummm, I’m struggling, so if I die in the next God knows what, then we’ve got an issue up in heaven. I’ll talk to you soon.”

The message immediately disturbed Greene. Atencio had often drunk-dialed Greene, but this was different. Greene then played it for Vu Pham, a friend staying with him who’d also worked with Atencio at North Face.

“Whoa,” Pham told Greene. “That’s not good.”

“What should I do?” Greene asked.

“Call him,” Pham said. “Tell him you love him, you’re there for him.”

Greene called Atencio back. Atencio didn’t pick up, but Greene said he left a long voicemail message, saying all the things Vu suggested. Greene didn’t hear back from Atencio that day. But on Sunday night, Atencio’s mother Jane called Greene—but he wasn’t able to pick up. It wasn’t until Monday afternoon that Greene was able to talk to her, and learn that Atencio had killed himself Saturday afternoon—just a few hours after Greene had called him back.

“She was obviously in shock,” Greene recalled. It was then that he told

“I’m so sorry,” she told Greene. “He did that with a number of his friends.”

Chris Atencio was a good friend of mine. He and I met about 14 years ago, not long after he moved next door to me. We were living in tiny, drafty studio apartments built on Newport’s Balboa Peninsula in the 1920s, but they were also just a few yards from the beach.

We ate pizza while watching surf videos, flirted with girls and traded books. When he got his private pilot’s license, we rented a Cessna and flew out to Catalina and back.

Right from the beginning, Atencio seemed different from your typical Newport Beach resident. He was part of the Wedge Crew, sure, of surfers who found a home in those nasty waves at the end of the Balboa Peninsula (made famous in the 1966 surfing documentary Endless Summer), but he was more than that. He was a world traveler, endlessly curious about how people everywhere lived. He and I talked for hours about all manner of subjects. I often asked him about his experiences overseas, and he in turn asked me questions about writing.

He’d traveled to, and lived in, dozens of countries—South Africa, Israel, the Dominican Republic, Australia, Mauritius, Germany, Japan, Russia. He spoke Japanese, French, German, Spanish and even American Sign Language.

A year or two ago, when he was applying for a security clearance, an investigator with the federal Office of Personnel Management dropped by the MauiTime office and asked me, among other questions, how many people Atencio knew overseas. I could only shrug my shoulders. “Who knows,” I told him. “Dozens? Hundreds?”

“He had a key to my apartment, and I had a key to his condo,” said Craig Plitt, a Newport Beach boat captain who knew Atencio for 20plus years. He was a great, true friend. He had honesty, reliability, sincerity.”

Atencio was also deeply troubled, though I knew nothing of it until Greene called me shortly me after he got off the phone with Atencio’s mother. I knew nothing of two drugs he was taking for depression, or that he was suffering from crippling nightmares.

I didn’t know he had spent months at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical clinics talking with doctors, nurses and specialists. I had no idea that just a few days before he died, he had started the process of getting the VA to confirm that he suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Doing so meant that the government would admit that his troubles were service-related and pay for his medical care for the rest of his life, but the process required him to fill out lengthy forms requiring Atencio to describe in detail all the “stressful incidents” that plagued him during his time in the service.

Two days after he finished filling out those forms—finished reliving all the pain and frustration he’d had to deal with—Atencio hung himself in his garage, becoming one of the 22 or so American vets who commit suicide each day. It was Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014—his mother’s birthday.

“I don’t know,” Jane said when I asked why her son would kill himself on her birthday. It was an impossible question, but I had to ask it. “He was very good with my birthday. He knows I can’t remember dates. I actually chuckle every time I have to give the day he died. This way, I have to remember.”

On Feb. 1 last year, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) released a study showing that veterans are killing themselves at the rate of about 22 a day—over 8,000 vets a year. “The report indicates that the percentage of veterans who die by suicide has decreased slightly since 1999, while the estimated total number of Veterans who have died by suicide has increased,” the Department of Veterans Affairs announced when the report came out.

A VA spokesperson told the Weekly that the department does its best to get care to the vets who come to it for help, and the toll-free Veterans Crisis Line phone number is posted throughout their facilities.

“If any veteran comes into any medical center and claims he’s a danger, he can get medical care,” said VA public affairs office Ndidi Mojay. “If you go to a VA medical center, they should be able to point you in the right direction.”

Should. Critics of the VA say that’s fine, but sometimes people get lost in the bureaucracy.

“There’s also a lot of variation between the various VA facilities,” said Dr. Tom Berger, the executive director of the Veterans Health Council of the organization Vietnam Veterans of America. “As the saying goes, if you’ve seen one VA, you’ve seen one VA.” The VA’s data shows a number of trends, some good, others not so much. In January of this year, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) noted that vets in the system—like Atencio—killed themselves at a rate of not quite 30 per 100,000 in 2010, while those outside the system took their lives at a rate of nearly 45 per 100,000.

But Berger noted something else in the data. “The VA report shows that 70 percent of suicides are veterans over 50 years old,” he said. “It’s significant—Vietnam vets and older veterans are killing themselves at a higher and faster rate than younger people.”

Another telling stat comes from the Veterans Crisis Line. Created in 2007 as the National Veterans Suicide Prevention Hotline (officials changed the name in 2011 as a way of telling friends and family members that they could call, too), the service has so

far taken 1.1 million calls. Of those, the organization says it’s made “more than 35,000 life-saving rescues.”

In early 2013, the VA announced that they’d just “increased the capacity of the Veterans Crisis Line by 50 percent.”

The VA also noted that the department was “currently engaged in an aggressive hiring campaign” to deal with the rise in suicides. At the same time, 98 members of Congress secured an additional $40 million appropriated specifically for suicide prevention and outreach.

On paper, those new staffing figures and dollar amounts seem like a lot. But when you think of the fact that this nation has approximately 22 million veterans, and that the VA’s budget is nearly $100 billion a year, they suddenly seem woefully inadequate.

“It is a tragedy that our country loses more veterans and service members to suicide than to hostile fire or enemy action,” Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D–Hawaii), who is herself a captain in the Hawaii National Guard and an Iraq War veteran, told me through her spokesperson. “They represent less than one percent of Americans who have carried the burden of the battles fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, and are paying the physical and psychological price. We owe them our gratitude, and so much more.”

Vets like Chris.

Atencio’s desire to put on the uniform began, like so many, on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. In fact, he woke me up that morning to tell me the news of the attacks. “Dude, airplanes just hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon,” he told me. His mom had called him, but he didn’t have a TV set to see for himself.

So we sat in silence on the floor of my apartment as the second World Trade Center tower collapsed.

Though Christopher Andrew Atencio was born in Oregon on Nov. 7, 1971, he grew up in Newport Beach. He went to Corona del Mar High, then graduated from the University of California’s Santa Cruz campus in 1995. Though he had a degree in linguistics, he was doing odd jobs when I met him: selling action sports gear and clothing at North Face, checking IDs at Cal Beach Sushi in Newport, tending bar at the restaurant in the Balboa Pavilion.

Not long after 9/11, Atencio decided he wanted to be an intelligence officer. First, it was the Marines, but he was too old (31) and couldn’t get an age-waiver. Then he moved on to the Army, which accepted him.

I didn’t like the idea. If he really wanted to travel the world on the government’s dime, then the State Department seemed far more suited to his interests and skills. But even that was a stretch. While Atencio at first glance seemed to be a lighthearted, easy-going OC surfer—a friend once compared him to Crush, the green sea turtle in Finding Nemo—inside, he was high-strung and completely intolerant of bullshit in all its forms.

Rather than confront Atencio head-on with my concerns—which I figured he’d reject out of hand—I tried something more indirect. That’s how my story “My Friend Chris,” which ran in the OC

“Army stuff amazes me here,” he emailed me on Nov. 19, 2008, not long after arriving in Iraq. “We are deployed but we put on the best dog and pony show for a deployed team/task force I have ever heard of, much less been in… Times like this make me want to jump ship ASAP. Still holding out for some programs and real training where I can get a job and apply it. I never thought the army would be that hard when it comes to that.

It’s a brief story of a local guy who had a whole world of options to choose from, but decided at 31 to join the army. I packed the story with quotes from vets, including my father, who all (as I had hoped) offered the same advice: “Just keep your mouth shut.”

But what I didn’t realize at the time was that Atencio wanted the structure and bureaucracy of the army, even if he couldn’t really articulate it. He thought he could deal with all the tiny empires that sprout in the service. He wanted the order that came from the army’s rules, but he didn’t understand that each rule might also have a waiver.

“Chris was a people person,” Katie Walsh, who was Atencio’s girlfriend for much of the latter half of 2013, told me.

“He had a temper, didn’t really like taking orders, couldn’t keep his mouth shut and had a high idea of how people should act.

He bounced around the world. But [in 2000] he felt his life was going nowhere.

After 9/11, he found direction. He didn’t have to identify the direction, because someone else would.”

Atencio didn’t talk about the reprimand from his CO in Iraq much in his letters and emails home, but I later learned that it had killed his career. His CO had given Atencio a bad Officer Evaluation Report (OER). Given the army’s zero tolerance for just about anything deemed bad by the top brass, a single bad OER could doom an officer. From late 2008 onward, Atencio would never rise above captain.

After his year in Iraq the army sent him to Japan, a backwater post. He never again held a command, and just marked time until the army decided they were through with him.

I last saw Atencio toward the end of June 2013, right around the time of his discharge, and he seemed fine. Well, mostly fine. He was getting out of the army when he emailed me, saying he wanted to stop on Maui and say hi and asked if he could crash on my couch. Since I hadn’t seen him in at least eight years (he’d spent some leave while in active duty to visit Hawaii), that wouldn’t be a problem.

In typical Atencio fashion, I found him in Kahului Airport’s Baggage Claim, trying to help fellow passengers find their luggage. Nor was I surprised to see a skateboard strapped to his bag.

At home, he showed my girlfriend and I slides of some of his travels—a favorite pastime of his. Going out one night for sushi, he demonstrated his special technique for mixing wasabi into soy sauce. Later, he gave us special chopsticks he’d bought in Japan. While I was away at work, he rode his skateboard down to the beach and snorkeled with green turtles. On his last day, I took him to the Maui Time office, and he talked easily with my colleagues—even flirted with our summer intern.

He also showed me his DD-214—his Certificate of Separation from the service— that served as a kind of resume of all his duty stations and assignments. His discharge was honorable, and his security clearance was still good. He could write his own ticket for a solid civilian job.

But there were darker moments in his trip. He was quieter, less effusive than I recalled. At the time I attributed it to his long flight over from Japan, and a general fatigue that comes making big life transitions. But he also admitted something odd just a couple hours after arriving.

“I’ve gotten so racist,” he told me over lunch after I picked him up. “Especially toward Filipinos.”

It was a shocking admission, which he made almost matter-of-factly. Here was a guy who had spent his entire adult life traveling the world, and he was now telling me that he now couldn’t rise above racism.

Something was wrong, but I did nothing.

Not sure what to say, I just frowned and shook my head. We were soon talking about other things, but I didn’t forget his comment. Though I never saw him say or act in a racist manner, the admission gnawed at me for the rest of his visit. It still does to this day.

Council, which brings together the leaders of a variety of veteran organizations on Maui. “They’ll make a recommendation as to what the veteran needs.”

In mid-September, Atencio started going to the VA for help.

“We don’t know what Chris told the VA,” Jane Atencio said. “But I have his VA medical records. And I know for a fact that he wasn’t taking his meds regularly, because he told me. He was also drinking, which you’re not supposed to do when taking the meds.”

In late October, Jane said she and her son had a blow-up. She was moving to Las Vegas at that point, and it was a stressful time for both. After that, she said, she asked some of her son’s friends to keep an eye on him. Plitt and others began periodically checking in on Atencio.

“I always found him to be fine, and we’d have a good time,” Plitt told me.

He went to the VA a lot, Marsh said.

Often, Atencio would vent to her about his frustrations. Sometimes he went multiple times a week. VA doctors prescribed him the

Then Atencio shared some of his current frustrations with both the VA and his mother.

“Hoping we can hang out some time,” he wrote. “I’m at the VA next Tues and Wed. Home has sucked. Transition has been hell.”

Around that time, Atencio decided to file a disability claim with the VA for PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). If the VA had accepted the claim, then they’d pay for all his medical care for the rest of his life.

But making the claim first required him to complete VA Form 21-0781 (Statement in Support of Claim for Service Connection for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and Form 21-4138 (State in Support of Claim). Both are monuments to the massive bureaucratic forces that treat soldiers like machines and had so frustrated Atencio.

The forms required Atencio to describe in detail each “stressful incident” that happened

When Atencio arrived back in Orange County in July 2013, he immediately reconnected with his old Wedge Crew pals.

They surfed, went dirt-bike riding and even took up skydiving. Though Atencio had earned his jump wings in the army, Plitt said he loved jumping “just for fun.”

He had time to relax and have fun, it seemed, and no one complained.

“When he moved back, he seemed like Chris,” Plitt told me. “The first day I saw him was the Fourth of July. We hopped on bikes and cruised the boardwalk, going from bar to house party to bar to house party. Pretty much every day after that the three of us were hanging out—jumping out of planes, body surfing, eating sushi, drinking beers.”

But deep down, Atencio wasn’t well.

He had money and a secure place to live (the condo where he lived belonged to his mother) but didn’t have a job, and didn’t seem to know what he wanted to do.

The Army calls what Atencio went through “transition”—the time when a soldier finally trades in his or her uniform for civilian clothes. Regardless of promises of future health benefits, job counseling and paid college tuition, it’s a rough time. In 2012, the service even mandated that all personnel leaving the service had to participate in “transition services” that included job counseling and other practical assistance. But as far as transitioning a soldier’s mind to civilian life, the former grunt is pretty much alone.

“The system is full of bureaucracy,” said John Parent, interim service officer for the Orange County Veterans Service Office (VSO) in Santa Ana. Since 1929, the OC VSO has helped vets navigate the complex, maddening world that is the Veterans Administration. About 6,500 veterans visit the OC VSO every year, and they end up helping about 4,500 vets each year.

“In a year, we may see a veteran three times,” Parent said. “Last December, we helped a client who first came here in 1946. It can be overwhelming and confusing to a lot of people. If you say a certain thing to the VA, that will generate a certain response. A lot of times the veteran gets so frustrated, but by law the VA has certain due processes that they have to do.

The VA is trying to be veteran-friendly, and they’ve implemented some policies that allow you to apply online, but if you read the fine print it says to seek help from a veteran services organization.”

Parent said that his office assists veterans in a variety of ways, including talking to them about their claims and filling out the forms for them. “The VA can be generous, if you provide them with a well-grounded claim,” Parent said. “Getting the word out to veterans is not easy, but it’s gotten better.

A lot of people [leaving the service] may get a general briefing on their benefits, but that’s about it.”

Out here, the State of Hawaii has an Office of Veterans Services, with offices on every major island. On Maui, the OVS is located in Kahului.

“If you’re a soldier, you go to the OVS and speak to a counselor,” said Paul Laub, who directs the Maui County Veterans

anti-depressants Citalopram and Trazodone.

In late December, an acupuncturist told him he had fibromyalgia, brought on by PTSD.

By January, he was also undergoing sleep tests, to deal with constant nightmares.

“He wasn’t really sleeping,” Plitt told me. “You sleep, but you don’t get rest.

You don’t get your batteries recharged.”

On Jan. 6, Greene—who had met up with Atencio a couple times since his return— randomly turned on NPR and heard part of their story “Army Takes On Its Own Toxic Leaders.” It was a well-researched 13-minute report on how the army was researching whether “toxic” commanding officers may “have contributed to soldiers’ mental health problems.”

Recalling his own talks with Atencio about some of the commanding officers who’d given him grief, Greene found the story online when he got home and emailed it to Atencio. His mother said she heard the story as well, and also sent it to her son.

“Colonels and generals adored Chris,” said Jane, who counted numerous senior officers as family friends and followed her son’s military career closely. “It was majors who didn’t really like him.”

In any case, Atencio thanked Greene for the story three days later.

They include spaces to list the names of service members involved in the stressful incidents and helpful checkoff boxes to mark in case those service members were “killed in action” or merely “wounded in action.” They even include time elements, specifically saying how much time it should take the depressed soldier to complete the form.

“That was the worst thing ever,” Jane Atencio told me. “He had to enumerate everything he felt was contributing to his PTSD. They sent him home with these forms, and he had to fill them out by hand. It came to nine pages. Most of it I knew, but it was horrifying for him to relive it. He filled out the forms but didn’t send them in.”

“He filled out forms on PTSD on the Thursday before he died,” she added.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that that’s what pushed him over the edge.”

Jane Atencio said she last talked with her son a couple days before his suicide. They talked about her upcoming birthday, and planned a visit for early February. When he didn’t call her on her birthday—something she said he was very good about doing every year—she became concerned.

Plitt went by the condo to check on his friend, as he’d done in the past. “When

I found him, he was clean-shaven, well dressed,” Plitt said. “He had the appearance of being ready to go out. He looked like he was ready to go out and have fun.”

Chris Atencio was 42 years old.

Nearly 300 people showed up at the Balboa Pavilion on Feb. 1, 2014 for Atencio’s Celebration of Life. It was a good venue choice—back in 2001 or so, I’d spent many weekend afternoons in the Pavilion’s restaurant, sitting with locals, fishermen and the odd tourist at the bar while Atencio mixed drinks.

Jane Atencio said friends of her son came from the West Coast, the East Coast, Alaska, Canada and Japan. Another 86 people went to the Wedge for a paddleout. Friends in Japan held a separate paddle-out for him as well.

I wasn’t able to make it. The last time I saw Atencio was when I dropped him off at Kahului Airport. He was headed to Oahu for a couple days to see a few friends there before returning to OC. On the drive over we talked about his future, mostly— the possibility of him getting a job as a contactor, starting his own business or even going back to school. I told him he had tons of options, and that I had no fear that he’d do all right for himself.

We traded a couple brief emails after that, but that day back in June 2013 was pretty much the last time I really talked with Atencio. It was pleasant but entirely unmemorable, which I guess makes me fortunate. Others, like Andy Greene, have very different final memories of him.

“I still have the voicemail message,” Greene told me recently. “I don’t know why. Maybe its because it’s his voice.

My wife wants me to delete it. I’ll let go of it at some point—it’s a tough one to swallow. But I’ll be honest with you: I feel a little bit better that I wasn’t the only one who got one.”

At the Celebration, Jane Atencio placed hundreds of photos of Atencio from throughout his life on tables and told everyone gathered to take home what they thought important and special. Knowing I couldn’t be there, Greene sifted through them until he found a few with me, then mailed them a few days later. One of them, taken at my 2003 going-away party when I moved to Maui, showed the three of us.

Atencio, his head freshly shaven—he was on leave after finishing Basic, I believe— had his arm around us and some shiny fake lei around his neck.

Years ago I had mailed the photo to Atencio, and he’d filed it away, with practically everything else he ever owned.

On the back of the photo, for reasons I’ve long forgotten, I had scribbled the following quotation from Emerson, which I’d found in the novel From Here To Eternity: “The Sphinx must solve her own riddle. If the whole of history is in one man, it is all to be explained from individual experience.”

on licenses since their engines are greater than 50cc, but Motoroshi also has a fleet of a dozen Genuine Buddy and Rough House scooters that anyone with a US or international driver’s license can rent.

“In Europe, it’s common to ride Vespas and scooters, and you’ll often know a cafe by the concentration of parked bikes in front,” says Pavel. “We’re the only folks on Maui to rent the Italian, Vespa-branded motorcycles, and they do add to the European vibe of the cafe. We offer the bikes for three-hour tours as well as daily, multi-day and weekly rentals.

Helmets, bike locks and safety lessons are included with each rental. The scooters are most popular and appropriate for day trips touring the West Maui beaches. We like to send visitors along the Lower Honoapi’ilani Road to Honolua Bay.” Another compliment to the Cafe and its ambience is the gift shop. Cafe Cafe sells their own line of Maui Coffee in locally designed woodblock print packaging on foil lined recycled paper. In addition to coffee, you’ll

l fresco cafes with Vespa rentals can’t help but evoke a European flair, and Cafe Cafe in Lahaina is no exception. Sitting in their chairs on Lahainaluna, perusing the coffee menu and considering croissants will transport you to Rome or Paris. Owner Pavel Hladis and his brother, Klika, grew up in the Czech Republic, and they spent a lot of their time socializing at cafes– common in Europe, but friends say they took it to an extreme. Their friends even said they were so obsessed that they needed their own cafe.

Years later, when the space at 129 Lahainaluna–which had housed many local businesses, including a lingerie store and scooter rental–Pavel and Klika saw the perfect opportunity to realize their dream. Cafe Cafe & Motoroshi Maui opened in February 2012.

“Basically I wanted to bring the European coffee house experience to Maui,

but blend it with local coffee, local fare and Maui’s relaxed vibe–no shirt, no shoes, no problem,” says Pavel. “After all, a cafe is supposed to feel like home, but better.

Because someone’s there who knows your name, your favorite drink, makes you a simple meal and does the dishes while you listen to great music, read, catch up with friends or have a meeting or work online with free wifi. This is my living room, and I want you to think of it that way, too.”

It may be his living room, but Cafe Cafe has a serious dedication to coffee quality.

Pavel is passionate about dark roasts with full, rich body and low acidity. Working with Maui Oma, he developed custom blends of beans and special roasts that express his tastes through Maui’s local coffee. On Friday afternoons, they host free coffee tastings.

‘You should be able to cut the crema of an espresso with a knife,” says Pavel. “You need to be able to put a spoon of sugar on a cappuccino or latte and have it sit there before it falls into the drink.”

For food, the cafe offers a range of healthy offerings. Like green veggie smoothies and fresh fruit smoothies made on demand, with

additions like Billy’s Infinity Greens, soaked chia, flax seed oil and avocado. They also do acai with super foods, fruits and greens, goji chia and banana, and kale and quinoa salads.

Then there are bagels and croissant sandwiches and scrambled egg plates. The cafe recently ditched their gelato case to expand their fruit and veggie smoothie menu. They have an array of sweeteners and alternatives to milk.

“Cafe Cafe has five different kinds of natural sweetener,” says Heather Harde, a co-manager in the business. “Organic cane sugar, coconut palm sugar, honey and agave. We also have three different milk alternatives–soy, almond and coconut milks. But no skim milk. We don’t think it’s healthy, so we don’t offer it. A few tourists still storm out in protest, but we think locals appreciate our heathy focus.”

They also pay special attention to iced coffee, taking the time to make cubes out of coffee so it doesn’t get diluted. It’s an extra step but in Lahaina’s heat, it makes all the difference.

“The cafe has grown into its healthy menu over time,” says Harde. “It started out with croissants and bagels from The Bakery in Lahaina and locally-made banana and pineapple-zucchini breads, but we’ve grown our offering, both to reflect what we want to eat ourselves as well as to match the mostlyhealthy food preferences of locals who work Front Street and live in Lahaina. We’re not any one thing in particular, but we do work hard to offer a number of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menu options that work for breakfast, lunch and any time of day. We source as many of our fresh ingredients as possible and our cream/milk alternatives from Mana Foods in Paia. We’re hoping to expand our relationships directly with West Maui farmers and growers as the cafe continues to grow.”

“We wanted to support her, so we launched her line with an Aloha Friday afternoon trunk show. Now we’re carrying her pieces on an ongoing basis. We’re also starting to host other local artists on a rotating basis. Mutants Are People Too! ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ reminds us why we love these characters X-men: Days of Future Past ★★★★★ Rated PG13/131 min.

T

he morning before I attended the screening of the new X-Men movie, I was cleaning out an old box of mementos and came across an odd flyer. It read “Mutants Are People Too!” on the cover.

On the inner fold were details of how this country was full of Mutant Oppression and lacking Mutant Equality. I was given this flyer at the first screening of the original X-Men in 2000, when the studio staged a mock protest outside the theater. Actors made up as mutants handed out pamphlets and spoke out against the Senator Kelly character, played in the movie by Bruce Davison.

It’s amazing (and maybe a little depressing) that there have been seven X-Men movies made in the past 14 years, and only a few of them are really good. The first two, directed

by Bryan Singer, were made before the saturation of comic book movie adaptations we have today and remain impressive, thrilling and a lot of fun. The disappointing

X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine were the underwhelming series lows, while the pretty good X-Men: First Class and the underrated The Wolverine mostly succeeded in capturing the gruff, imaginative essence of the series. Now, with Singer returning to direct a series installment for the first time since 2003, the franchise mostly escapes superhero movie fatigue by finding a brilliantly clever new angle to explore.

The complex plot opens with the world we know becoming a dark, dreary place in the near future. All mutants are hunted and killed by man-made machines called Sentinels and the X-Men crew is sparse and holed up in China, awaiting possible extinction. By a means too convoluted to explain, Logan (Hugh Jackman) is sent back in time to change the past. His mission: in order to save the future and change the past, he must recruit younger versions of his mentor, Professor X and his adversary, Magneto; not only must he convince them of his quest but also get the two longtime enemies to work together.

All of the scenes set in the future, with the familiar crew of mutants fighting off the Sentinels and taking part in effects-heavy mayhem, are tired and feel overly familiar. Once

the story settles into the 1970s and becomes a delightful, engaging time travel action/comedy, the movie takes off. I won’t describe it, but there is an incredible scene, set to Jim Croce’s “Time in Bottle,” that astonishes by blending state of the art CGI, crafty cinematography and a wicked sense of humor. While the movie never tops this sequence, there are other setpieces that deliver on the excitement and spectacle promised by the series.

Uninitiated audiences should see the first two entries, in order to get up to speed.

But the story often helps the newcomers by offering flashbacks and exposition, making this feel almost like a stand-alone installment.

Because the time travel aspect re-introduces characters and allows playful twists to our expectations and the series’ lore, it also feels like we’re seeing the first X-Men adventure.

Jackman carries the film perfectly, reliably applying grit and a wry sense of humor to Wolverine. Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, Evan Peters’ Quicksilver and James McAvoy’s Professor X are the acting standouts. It seems to say more about the change in movie star popularity than the screenplay that Halle Berry’s role as Storm barely registers, while Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique is now a central character (Lawrence has more to do in the part than Rebecca Romjin ever did).

With the closing scenes especially satisfying and the mix of the new and old cast creating a pleasant ensemble, I’m admittedly eager for the forthcoming X-Men Apocalypse. The closing moments reminded me why I loved the first movie: because I adored these characters. After all, mutants are people, too. ■
