No word on providing any financial compensation for residents who have to deal with the fallout from his burns, but given the history of sugar plantations in Hawaii, that shouldn’t surprise anyone.

OCEANIC WANTS CABLE MONOPOLY FOR 20 MORE YEARS

HC&S BURNS SUGAR, RESIDENTS AND ITS OWN MILL Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S) seems to be taking the term “Burn Season” way too literally. Yeah, the old mill in Pu‘unene suffered a fire on Saturday. According to the Oct. 13 Maui News, the “accidental” fire occurred on a conveyor belt, causing an estimated $13,000 in damages.

That would be bad enough, but a few inches to the right of the Maui News photos of fire trucks at the mill was a small blurb on more rotten news for the company concerning its policy of burning sugar cane in the 37,000 acres of fields it owns. As everyone in Central, Upcountry and South Maui is aware, this means residents get to wake up to hazy, smoky skies and lots of black ash (“Maui Snow”) littering decks, driveways and cars.

But apparently, sugar cane burns last week caused so much ash that HC&S was moved to apologize to residents.

“General Manager Rick Volner said windy conditions that are good for harvesting resulted in heavier ash fallout,” The Maui News reported on Oct. 13. “Volner said the company apologizes for any inconvenience

Football is a major part of life in America, and especially here in Hawaii. Our state lacks pro teams in any of the major leagues, so the University of Hawaii provides sports/entertainment uniting threads that help bind our islands together. Here on Maui, high school football carries the same near-mythic importance as that of just about all the other small towns on the Mainland.

That’s why it was especially jarring to see Frontline’s latest documentary, titled “League of Denial.” For nearly two hours,

For the last 15 years, Oceanic Time Warner Cable has been Maui County’s sole cable TV provider. And it’s been pretty cool, right? They provide us whatever broadband speeds they like in exchange for whatever they wish to charge us, and if we don’t like it we can cut the coaxial cable and walk away.

Oh, and if they want to take a hardball approach to negotiating with something like CBS that involves simply shutting down Showtime at the height of Dexter’s closing season, they can do that, too.

Anyway, Oceanic would like to continue this business model of doing what they like, when they like it, for another 20 years. In August, the company filed a request with the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) saying that everything’s just peachy now, and it’s gonna be even peachier if they get to extend their monopoly another generation.

“Oceanic is fully prepared and committed to continuing its quality and innovative services to the residents of Maui County through the next franchise period,” the company states in its Aug. 30 DCCA application. “As with the current franchise period, the next period will see new technological advances, and Oceanic intends to continue its leadership and innovation within the cable television industry to provide innovative, quality and dependable service to all of its subscribers… Oceanic looks forward to continuing its tradition of providing dependable, quality and innovative cable television services to the residents of Maui County though a franchise that balances the interests of stakeholders with the flexibility to deploy and manage technology and resources in the best, long-term interest of all subscribers in the county.”

If the DCCA is judging applications on how many times the company uses meaningless corporate buzzwords and euphemisms, then Oceanic will easily win its license renewal. The idea that football–professional or otherwise–glorifies violence at the expense of the human beings who play it is nothing new. Ask the late Junior Seau's family, or any of the other former players who suffer from chronic brain injuries but haven't killed themselves.

“Football combines two of the worst things in American life,” political columnist George F. Will observed many years ago. “It is violence punctuated by committee meetings.”

What is new is the way Frontline‘s “League of Denial” documentary was able to show conclusively that the NFL has for many years sat on damning medical data showing that act of playing football–regardless of the helmets and padding the players wear–injures the brain.

After he watched it, a friend immediately proclaimed to me that football was “dead.”

Oh, if only that were the case. Football makes too much money in this nation to die so easily.

According to Forbes, the NFL’s revenue (which has never officially been made public) is hovering around $9 billion, with league officials dreaming of making $25 billion a year. College football is equally profitable (except, apparently, at UH, which is actually losing money): a chart from August in Forbes shows tremendous prof-

the program laid waste to the National Football League’s long insistence that the sport’s crushing violence directly leads to serious, permanent, life-degrading brain injuries in its players. The program aired on PBS stations nationwide earlier this week, but you can watch it online at PBS.org.

Football’s violent hits, tackles and sacks mesh perfectly with our nation’s imperial power. Our nation builds giant aircraft carriers and powerful drone bombers that circumnavigate the globe in search of enemies to destroy. Watch any commercial for an NFL game and tell me the league doesn’t wallow in the “grid iron’s” violence.

IT'S BEEN WEEKS SINCE THE MAUI NEWS PUT UP THEIR ONLINE PAYWALL 62 ft. deep-sea voyaging canoe in preparation for its December launch.

In addition, the Hui is looking for kupuna volunteers to provide cultural support and encouragement to their staff and volunteers.

The Hui o Wa‘a Kaulua, in partnership with other groups, runs educational programs using voyaging to excite and challenge students and their communities to learn about, respect and care for the natural and social environment. It’s the only nonprofit organization on Maui that uses a traditional sailing double-hull canoe for educational purposes. Their mission statement says they want a healthy, productive, safe Hawaii and world.

The nonprofit was formed in 1975 on Maui to support the construction of the Mo‘olele (“Leaping Lizard”), a 42foot Hawaiian double-hull canoe with a traditional crab claw sail. Today, the organization’s main focus is educational outreach as well as the completion of the Mo‘okiha o Pi‘ilani, which has been 17 years in the making.

The Mo’okiha will be Maui’s first modern day deep-sea voyaging canoe, which

legalizing same-sex marriage may be in some way unconstitutional (either state or federal) can rest easier, Attorney General David M. Louie said on Oct. 15.

“The authority to enact legislation recognizing marriages between two individuals of the same sex is vested in the Hawaii State Legislature,” Louie said in his office’s 10-page opinion. “No amendment to the Hawaii Constitution is necessary to give the Legislature the authority to enact the Proposed Bill, should the Legislature choose to pass it.”

The AG issued the opinion in response to questions posed by state Senator Les Ihara, D- Kaimuki, who has long supported legalizing of same-sex marriage. In fact, the whole AG opinion was in fact a letter (dated Oct. 14) to Ihara.

“You informed us that your questions arise from arguments made by opponents of the marriage equality bill circulated by the Governor’s Office on September 9, 2013 (the Proposed Bill),” Louie wrote in the letter to Ihara which contained his office’s legal opinion. “According to your request, you note that opponents to the

They need volunteers with woodworking, carpentry and wood finishing skills to help with shelving in the hulls, constructing and installing stanchion rails and building the navigators’ seats. In addition, many canoe parts need sanding and multiple applications of varnish. The Hui also needs volunteers to make ‘ukana nets to help outfit the traditional two-mast canoe.

Final finishing–under the direction of Captain Timi Gilliom–is underway at the Hui o Wa‘a Kaulua dry dock next to Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina. Thousands of community members have worked on the

Richard “Pablo” Caldito, Sr., the first Filipino-American elected to public office in the United States, will be recognized Thursday, Oct. 17 at a dedication ceremony to rename the Waihe’e Ball Park in his honor. Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa and the county Department of Parks & Recreation are inviting the public to join them at a 3:30pm ceremony as they officially change the park’s name to Richard “Pablo” Caldito, Sr. Park. The park is located at the corner of Kahekili Highway and Halewaiu Road in Waihe’e Town.

Caldito made history in 1956 when he won a seat on the Maui Board of Supervisors, which eventually became the Maui County Council. He served on the Council for 15 years and retired in 1972. Caldito also was the first Fil-Am politician to be elected in America as a

Democrat. During his public career, he also was an active member of numerous community associations. “[H]e always was a mentor,” Maui Councilman Mike Victorino said of Caldito at a June 18 County Council committee hearing. “He took me in when I was doing insurance when I first came into the business some 35 years ago, and he would sit down with me and tell me you got to do it by the people, by the people, do it for the people.”

Earlier this year, the Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation launched a scholarship in his honor. The Richard Caldito Government Service Scholarship is for a college student majoring in government, political science or a related field.

Caldito, who lived to the age of 98, died in 2011 at his home in Kahului.

In fact, Louie’s opinion notes, there’s nothing in either the Hawaii or U.S. Constitutions that would prohibit the state Legislature from allowing same-sex couples to enjoy all the benefits of marriage currently given to heterosexual couples.

“Enacting legislation to allow samesex couples to marry is not inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution either,” Louie wrote in his opinion. “Under the federal system, generally a State government may choose by its own laws to recognize rights greater than those required by the U.S. Constitution.”

News Of The Weird HAUTE COUTURE A few still-primitive cultures inexplicably celebrate such female adornments as the stacking of metal neck rings and the inserting of saucer-size disks into pierced earlobes.

For “civilized” society, there is the annual Paris Fashion Week in September, when renowned designers outfit brave, otherwisegorgeous models in grotesque clothing.

Among the ensembles witnessed by a New York Times critic this year: a hat resembling steroid-enhanced stalks of peas; a shoe appearing to sprout twig-studs; “a flexible cage covered in doughnuts of black satin;” and a pillow clutch with its own porthole.

THIS WEEK IN STOOL IMPLANTS News of the Weird first reported successful “stool implants” among family members in 2007 (to cure infections such as C. difficile by introducing the donor’s “good” microbes to overcome an imbalance of “bad” bacteria in a relative’s intestine). But in 2012, two University of California, Davis, neurosurgeons boldly extended the cutting-edge treatment for three patients with a highly malignant brain tumor unresponsive to treatment.The doctors tried infusing bowel bacteria directly into the tumor, but the patients died, nonetheless. Although the patients had given fully informed consent, the school in August 2013 pressured Drs. J. Paul Muizelaar and Rudolph Schrot to resign for having violated internal and FDA procedures.

HEALTH CARE COSTS GONE AWRY It’s well known that hospitals charge for medical supplies far in excess of what the products would cost at drugstores, but an August New York Times investigation of “saline drips” vividly demonstrated the disconnect. Though Medicare reimburses $1.07 for a one-liter plastic bag of saltwater (supplied by a subsidiary of Morton Salt), White Plains (N.Y.) Hospital charged patients’ insurance companies like Aetna $91 per bag. Other hospitals decline to charge per-bag, listing only “IV therapy” of, for example, $787 for hooking up the drip.

THE JOKER LIVES From the world’s cosmetic-surgery capital (South Korea, where one woman in five has had at least one procedure) comes the “Smile Lipt” offered by Aone Plastic Surgery in the city of Yongin, designed to produce a permanent smile (associated with success). The Smile Lipt turns downward-drooping lip corners upward, to allow a persistent smile resembling that of Batman’s nemesis, The Joker.

peeping–men who set up beneath the seats in public outhouses (sometimes wearing a raincoat) and wait for a user to answer nature’s call. In August, Kenneth Enlow, 52, pleaded guilty after a woman found him the month before in a privy in White Water Park in Tulsa County, Okla., “standing with his head and shoulders out of the hole... covered in feces,” according to a deputy.

Enlow’s initial explanation was that his girlfriend had knocked him unconscious with a tire iron and dumped him there.

JIM THORPE STILL CAUSING CONTROVERSY The family of the great Native American Olympic athlete and Oklahoma native Jim Thorpe (1888-1953) was so disappointed that the then-governor of Oklahoma would not properly honor Thorpe on his death that one faction of his family moved the body to Pennsylvania, where he had no discernible ties but where municipal officials eagerly offered to name a town after him. Since then, Jim Thorpe, Pa. (current population, 4,800), has withstood legal challenges seeking to return the body to Oklahoma, including a recent federal court decision upholding the entire town as a Native American “museum.”

One grandson said that Thorpe spoke to him at a sweat lodge in Texas in 2010, telling him to leave the body in Jim Thorpe, with “no more pain created in my name.”

GIVES TREKKIES A BAD NAME Anthony Alleyne appeared in News of the Weird in 2003 for turning his Hinckley, England, home into a replica of the command center of Star Trek’s starship Enterprise (including transporter control, warp drive, etc.). When he later tried to sell it, he learned that, somehow, potential buyers failed to value the house as much as Alleyne imagined. In September 2013, Alleyne was back in the news as Leicester Crown Court sentenced him to 34 months in prison for viewing child pornography–a diversion that he blamed on years of depression following marital difficulties and of course the brutal real estate market.

FOR SERIOUS COFFEE DRINKERS ONLY The story of Kopi Luwak coffee is by now a News of the Weird staple, begun in 1993 with the first reports that a super-premium market existed for coffee beans digested by certain Asian civet cats, collected, washed and brewed. In August the American Chemical Society reported that a “gas chromatography and mass spectrometry” test had finally been developed to assure buyers that their $227-apound Kopi Luwak beans had, indeed, been excreted by genuine Asian civets. (Thus, Kopi Luwak drinkers, at up to $80 a cup in California, can sip their brews without fear of being ripped off.) ■

o the young ultrasound technician: I think you should get your pulse checked. When a pregnant woman who is lying on your table has questions about the procedures you are performing on her body, you should learn how to answer her. She has every right to know what’s going on, every step of the way during her visit with you.

Instead, you just sat there with your gum-smacking, cold indifference, ignoring her while chatting with your co-workers about getting pizza after work. That defies professionalism and common decency on any level. If you don’t know the answers, then perhaps you should go back to college and get a degree in something else. ■

It has all fresh ingredients, a balance of sweet and tart, local rums, almond, Kaffir, fresh limes and orange juice. If you like brown liquor, a fresh Tamarind Whiskey Sour could quite possibly beat the Tai Mai in freshness and flavor. All fresh culinary cocktails served here use seasonal fresh local fruits and herbs. Some recent favorites include fresh juiced lilikoi, mangos, Kula strawberries, Pommelo, tamarind, ginger, coconut, lemongrass and Kaffir. You name it, we can do anything!

We are a chef-run restaurant with a bar program that reflects this philosophy through the use of local and hand-crafted ingredients. If I’m sitting at the bar, I would have a delicious glass of sparkling rose’ bubbles in my hand to pair with our house-cured Charcuterie. Or perhaps a handcrafted artisan cocktail served in a copper mug with crushed ice.

The Bonnie and Clyde on our menu features whiskey paired with an interesting digestive over an ice sphere.

We love stirring Templeton Rye with Cynar and Luxardo Maraschino liqueur and then streaming it over a delicate but fierce-molded ice sphere.

You will love it, too. We also love all the small batch browns from Hudson’s Baby Bourbon Collection.

For our vodka consumers, we muddle fresh sage with local grapefruit juice, shake it with Ruby Red Vodka and finish with an effervescent splash of soda water. We call her the Anna Sage. We also love our small batch gin selection–our favorite gin cocktail is the Ticking Thyme: Uncle Val’s Gin with Chartreuse Verte, muddled thyme from the garden and lemon juice served chilled and up.

At Capische? we feature a daily variety of local fruit in our traditional Brazilian Caipirinha spin called the Caipifruta. We have a starfruit tree on the property of Capische? that’s presently producing an abundance of starfruit. In

a mason jar, we muddle half of a lime, local starfruit sugar, Cachaca and lots of crushed ice. It’s the perfect, refreshing cocktail to savor and sip while viewing sunset from our bar.

I have to share our creation–the Sinner & Saint is the perfect balance of naughty and nice. It’s a Cynardrenched sugar cube dropped in a champagne flute with a touch of elderflower essence of Saint Germain topped off with chilled Prosecco!

If a customer needs a little direction, I point them to our “Potable Potents” specialty cocktail menu. We designed this collection based on classic, prohibitionstyle cocktails, but with a Capische? twist. The flavor profiles are unique and simple, with a bit for all palates.

We have an amazing happy hour daily from 5-7pm offered in the Bar & Lounge. We offer our Specialty Cocktails for $10, a Small Plates Menu for $10, as well as selected beer for $5 and selected house wines for $8. All are accompanied with ever-changing sunset views strewn across the sky. Here’s my bar: Craft of the Cocktail. If I’m sitting at the bar, it’s going to be Mezcal w/fresh limes and a little sugar for me. If you want to get down with the brown trend, try some of our Templeton Rye, and for the most exotic brown liquor we have the locally distilled Okolehao. If you gravitate towards clear,

have our Ocean Vodka, Martini’s Tanqueray gin and tonic or the Herradura tequila with soda Our craft drinks have a sense of humor, but are perfectly balanced for the palate. A good example is the Morning Wood: Woodford Reserve bourbon, Upcountry honey, Fee Bros Black Walnut bitters with Averna rinse, serve chilled and up and garnished with burnt orange peel.

If it’s happy hour, why not savor a margarita? You know, Paia is a Margarita Town and even though my boy down the street has a death-grip on the voting public–our Margaritas are uber fresh and very creative. We love our local distilleries and carry Haleakala Distillers Maui Platinum Rum, Maui Dark Rum, Okolehao and Ocean Vodka. For beers, the Maui Brewing IPA, Bikini Blond & Coconut Porter are all poured here.

Our friend Brianna recently brought in some crazy ass Brazilian Jaboticaba to play around with. Oh man, we love to screw around with lychee, calamansi, Thai basil, cilantro and lilikoi. There’s nothing we shy away from. As for the Jaboticaba, it ended up like this: Ocean Vodka, St Germain, fresh lime, about 12 Jaboticaba, fresh mint and lime bitters. You shake vigorously, double strain and serve up with a lime twist.

If you want to go for a really classy and fun drink, here’s my take on an Old Fashioned: one sugar cube soaked in Angostura bitters, one fresh orange wedge, muddled orange, sugar and bitters. Add ice and two ounces Buffalo Trace bourbon.

Give a little stir and a nod the great Elmer T. Lee, then sip.

Ambrosia is an energetic, intimate, club-feel alternative to Maui’s nightlife with something for everyone. If I’m sitting at the bar, I’m ordering a shot of Fernet Branca and a glass of red wine alongside a cheese platter: provolone, brie and aged white cheddar. As for our most popular brown spirits, Jagermeister and Jameson are still weekend favorites, but we’re seeing an increase of interest in Fernet Branca (a few of the bartenders’ drink of choice). It’s similar to Jager, but a little more minty and a lot less sweet.

Our vodka and tonics are a treat at Ambrosia; the quinine in the tonic water plus our black lights throughout the bar make your drink glow! Also, guests of Ambrosia love our Gusher, created

by Candice Seti: it’s a refreshing mix of Strawberri Stoli, St. Germaine, fresh squeezed lemon and club soda.

If you’re not sure what to order, our Lilikoi Martini is always a winner. It’s a tangy twist of the traditional lemon drop with a sweet profile. If you’re looking for something a little less sweet, our Tequila Twilight martini is a great choice–tequila, grapefruit and lime juice and just a bit of sugar. Feeling naughty? Try our S&M Martini featuring Mazama Pepper Vodka and blue cheese-stuffed olives.

My drink recipe is the Gummy Bear–try it at Ambrosia or make one at home: Stoli Raz, triple sec, sweet & sour and a splash of Sprite. It tastes just like a white gummy bear!

DILLON DRAY Ko The Ko bar is literally the center of attention. Our creative cocktails follow the concept of the cuisine, featuring local ingredients and flavors. The energy is lively with our entertainment seven nights a week, and we love seeing our hotel guests and local regulars nightly.

I’m a purist, but if I had to choose a cocktail on the menu, the Home Grown would be my beverage of choice. It’s a refreshing cocktail with local strawberry pepper jam from the Lavender Farm in Kula. If not this, I would drink one of our 26 wines by the glass.

We love serving Woodford Reserve Bourbon. The Papaya Smash features this spirit along with mint leaves, fresh lemon juice and papaya puree; it’s an interesting twist with local flavors and a wonderful brown spirit.

Although it’s technically not a clear spirit, we have a clear cocktail featuring Ty Ku silver sake, called the Sakejito. This clear beverage is served martini style and is super refreshing. Be careful with this one because it’s not strong–you may want to have more than just one.

JASON VENDRELL Monkeypod Kitchen At Monkeypod Kitchen’s bar we feature handcrafted cocktails, craft beer and boutique wine, all served with aloha. It’s that simple. I’m having champagne if I’m sitting at the bar. It’s a tough call because I’m really into bourbon right now. I just went to Kentucky and did a lot of “tasting.” We sell more of our whiskey-based cocktails than we do well vodka. I’m glad to see people drinking more flavorful liquors.

For years, I’ve been trying to get people to appreciate gin. We have a great selection and people are starting to substitute gin for vodka, which makes me so proud. Our No Ka Oi cocktail is served with vodka, lilikoi, Thai basil, egg whites, lime and simple syrup and is actually fantastic with gin.

When folks aren’t sure what they want, I ask them for a category, then take it from there. I will usually try to get someone to try a gin or whiskey-based cocktail. I want to encourage people to be adventurous.

is 50 percent off. The Pumpkin Patch Ravioli and Mushroom Pizza are a few of my favorites and all of our cocktails are delicious. Clear liquor to many translates to “skinny” which a lot of our guests are seeking. We try to keep recipes as “skinny” as possible by using only fresh juices and house-making all of our mixes and specialty syrups.

If you haven’t had our Mai Tais, they are a must. But if you’re Mai Tai’d out for the day, then try a world famous Woo Woo, created and named after the man himself, Hula bartender Mike Woo. Most of the beers we pour are local.

Maui Brewing Co. has created an amazing beer brewed exclusively for Hula Grill that’s our top seller. It’s called the Barefoot Brew, and is a honey golden ale using local honey. We also have Maui Brew Co.’s Bikini Blonde, Big Swell IPA, Mana Wheat and Coconut Porter, as well as Kona Brew Co.’s Longboard Lager, Firerock Pale Ale and Wailua Wheat. Primo is also available. We also feature two local liquors on our drink list using Ocean Vodka and Koloa, Kauai’s local rum.

I’m pretty pumped on the fresh squeezed juices we use for everything. We house-make our sweet and sour mix for margies, pina colada mix with fresh juices, fresh POG for Mai Tais and house-made ginger syrup for Hana Hou’s and fresh ginger ale. With great product, it’s pretty tough not to get a great cocktail or mocktail.

My cocktail creation to share is the Hana Hou–it’s a take on an Arnold Palmer, but not the kind your dad drinks. Made with Ocean Vodka, fresh squeezed lemonade, iced tea, it’s then shaken with house-made ginger syrup and lilikoi and served on the rocks.

Dull Blade ‘Machete Kills’ isn’t trashy enough Machete Kills ★★★★★ Rated R / 107 Min.

I wonder where she keeps the bullets

but they’re not as funny, exciting or grotesque as they ought to be. Planet Terror was a spot-on dissection of a dumb Bmovie. This is just a dumb B-movie.

The revolving door cast of celebrities can only do so much to keep Rodriguez’s overplotted screenplay interesting. Charlie Sheen (billed as Carlos Estevez) is a stitch as the U.S. President, delivering his absurd scenes completely straight. Sofia Vergara plays a raunchy character with filthy dialogue that makes her ideal for a so-bad-its-good movie. Too bad her tasty appearances are too infrequent.

The initially promising cameos by Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Hudgens, Tom Savini and Antonio Banderas are quickly wasted and, in the unlikely event that Lady Gaga becomes a film actress of note, it won’t be for her work here. Nothing she does tops

Lindsey Lohan’s packing heat and dressed in a nun’s habit in the first movie. There’s also Mel Gibson, oddly miscast in a role with lots of exposition and not enough opportunities to cut loose and display his considerable comedic talents.

A scene early in the film sums up what’s wrong with the execution: Trejo and bombshell Amber Heard are making out and she’s about to get naked. A title card flashes across the screen saying, “It’s Time to Put on Your 3D Glasses.”You laugh, until you realize that the movie isn’t in 3-D for some reason and Heard doesn’t actually get naked, even though this is an R-rated ode to drive-in movies.

Rodriguez is working overtime to tease B-movie conventions. Had he surrendered to them completely, he might have made a good movie. ■

here’s a website I love called Trailersfromhell.com, in which famous directors showcase their favorite coming attractions previews. Someone like Guillermo Del Toro or John Landis introduces and narrates a two-minute trailer, telling their personal experiences or the back story of the film in question. Sometimes, the filmmakers choose trailers for the likes of Rosemary’s Baby or Halloween. Mostly, it’s for amusing trash like The Green Slime or The Giant Claw, movies that are appreciatively encapsulated in trailers but hardly worth watching in their entirety.

The site helpfully demonstrates that trailers are sometimes better than the movie they’re promoting. Writer/director Robert Rodriguez could learn from this, as his Machete Kills is fun in trailer form but, at a full 107 minutes, is a drag to sit through.

For those new to the saga, the story so far: Rodriguez’s fake trailer within the

wonderfully deranged anthology film Grindhouse spun off into the feature length Machete in 2010. It delivered on its promise of an all-star cast gleefully hamming it up in a blood soaked Mexploitation flick, with the amusingly grim, smile-free Danny Trejo clearly relishing his unlikely leading man status in the title role.

But for all of its anything-goes outrageousness, it was rather flat. The sequel has many of the same problems as its predecessor, such as allowing Trejo to play one-note for an entire movie and skimping on the cheap thrills.

There are some amusingly (though unprintable) one-liners, scattered laughs and chuckle-worthy splatters of gore but, as strange as it sounds, there should have been more.

I like Rodriguez’s movies and his heart is in the right place when he stages one scene in a deserted drive-in movie theater. I also liked his homage to Star Wars, Mad Max and his own From Dusk Til Dawn, but he’s been down this road too many times before. His El Mariachi trilogy is a superior blend of thrills and Bmovie grit, and his Grindhouse vignette Planet Terror was relentlessly, hilariously, trashy.

MOLOKAI FESTIVALS OF ALOHA - Thursday to Sunday. The Friendly Isle will get a chance to showcase their famous Aloha spirit. The 2013 event honors the late Aunty Moana Dudoit. Oct. 17: Investiture, Poke Contest, Aloha Attire Contest. This year’s Royal Court will be installed in a regal ceremony and presented their symbols of royalty for a year-long reign.

Local Molokai entertainment will be offered as hookupu to the new ali‘i. View the many poke (raw fish) recipes on display. Food, game, art and craft booths too at 6:30PM. Oct 18: Youth Night, Kalo-Ulu-‘Uala Contest, Keiki Talent Contest, Battle of the Bands.

The Kamali‘i Kane and Kamali‘i Wahine will be honored with youth musical talents. Delicacies made of Kalo, Ulu or Uala compete for prize winnings. Food, game, art and craft booths at 6:30pm. Oct 19: The highlight of Molokai’s celebration is a one-of-a-kind parade featuring colorful pa’u riders on horseback, country-style floats with exotic island flowers. Parade passes through Kaunakakai town beginning at 9am.

Not only that, but you’ve grown to such massive size and ferocity that you’re now the biggest, baddest thing inhabiting the frigid waters you’ve been swimming in for a couple months now. You have nothing to fear for the moment—except bigger polar bears. Luckily, you can see them from a long way off. So relax, finally—just don’t get cocky, or careless.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Don’t throw yourself out with the garbage. There’s every likelihood, as you continue the endless cycle of purging your life of all the useless detritus it’s accumulated, that you’ll accidentally mix your keys, wallet, or cellphone with the trash. Be careful of that this week, and also of disposing of some of your useful personal qualities, which could get dumped along with the selfishness, pettiness, or self-destructive levels of efficiency you’re trying to get rid of. Instead of being forced to chase the garbage truck down your street, demanding to rummage through the rubbish in search of you’re your credit cards or your self-respect, simply be careful not to throw them out in the first place.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Imagine the thrill of finding something as valuable and sentimentally rich as a cache of treasure you hid a decade ago. There’s a small likelihood this week that you might uncover a repository of cash and goodies you’d concealed and completely forgotten about.

Even more likely, however, is the possibility of digging up heretofore unrecalled wisdom you possessed and discarded ages ago. We’re constantly recycling ourselves, becoming new people. One person’s trash is another’s treasure. You’re a different person than you were. Isn’t it possible that the junk of your past could be the rich bounty of your present?

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Strip. It’s probably too cold to be dancing outside in your skivvies, but you should be as naked as possible, as often as healthily possible, in as many ways as possible. In other words, eliminate as many barriers—both physical and emotional—between you and the world as you can. There are times to be cautious and guarded; this isn’t one of them. Everything that hits you this week (whether seemingly good or bad) is like sunshine and rain to a newly-sprouted plant.

It’s exactly what you need to grow and blossom. If you shield yourself from it, you’ll only stunt your own long-term potential. Instead, embrace it, and bloom.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) The bed you’ve made—which you now must lie in—is a curious mixture of comfy and scratchy. This is what you get for hedging your bets. Still, I’m glad you did. Sometimes it’s best to put all your eggs in one basket and just hope it works out, but you were smart enough to realize that, given your odds, you’d be better off not pinning all your hopes on just one thing.

So what’s happened is like a storm cloud with both a dark, thunder-filled belly, and a brilliantly golden bright side. Brave the weather as you must, but don’t focus on it. Instead, concentrate on unfolding the silver lining of your situation, until it covers everything. I think you’ll find it stretches much further than you expected.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Be careful not to trip this week, because at least half a dozen conniving conspirators are waiting in the wings to kick you while you’re down. If you manage not to fall, you’ll never see them; they’re like cowardly hyenas who’d never dare to face you at your full strength. Therefore, watch your step, puff out your chest, and roar a lot. If you manage to get through the next ten days without fucking up or being hamstrung, you’ll be home free. The craven scavengers hoping to benefit from your failure will scatter and disappear, in search of easier prey.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Severe stress makes you want to roll into a ball and hide. Who can blame you? Heed your instincts when they demand you curl up self-protectively.

However, instead of cowering, roll intrepidly into the difficult situations you’re dreading. After all, the quandaries you’re shrinking from won’t dissolve on their own. Be a ball. Spheres are resilient, and when you’re in this cautious emotional stance, threats and weapons headed your way will almost certainly be deflected. Roll with anything else that comes your way, make forward progress whenever you can, and the depressing impediments to your happiness will be behind you at least ten times sooner than they would’ve been, otherwise.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’re Snow White in the forest. Hold out a finger and a chirping bird will swoop down to land on it. Starving deer will emerge from their wooded hideouts to nibble from your hand. Unfortunately being a multifaceted Gemini is a double-(or quadruple-) edged sword.

You’re just as likely to fry up the songbird for dinner or skin the doe as simply enjoy their company. Similarly, the prince(ss) that comes out of the woodwork in answer to your innocent song of longing may glimpse your equally powerful dark side and run screaming.

Don’t try to hide your most shadowy urges. Instead, make it your goal to find the royal consort who’d run screaming if you didn’t have that dark side.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Make sure you bundle up. Chilly weather doesn’t have to be heinous torture; the difference between misery and contentment is proper insulation. But although the climate’s likely to be pretty brisk this week, that’s not exactly what I’m talking about. Instead you should be donning layers of padding between you and the frosty emotional temperatures gusting across your landscape. They could be bracing, even invigorating, or they could be horrible and damaging, depending on how geared up you are.

If you’re not prepared to wear the mental equivalent of seven layers of cotton, wool, and Gore-Tex, you ought to jump on a plane headed for the equator, fast.
