SCHATZ ON VOTING RIGHTS ACT CASE There are a lot of things that suck about being a reporter these days (folding newspapers, tighter budgets, more work for less pay for those “lucky” enough to still have jobs, etc.) but one thing that most certainly does not suck is that the people at the highest levels of government (perhaps emboldened by our ever-shrinking media) are increasingly behaving in utterly shameless ways.

Which is why I wasn’t particularly shocked to see that just a few days after the Food Network booted Paula Deen from her particularly lucrative cable television contract over her recent and bizarre racist ramblings, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a portion of the Voting Rights Act, signed into law back

It’s always nice when we see our esteemed congressional representatives in Washington– who get to attend things like State Dinners with diplomats and meetings with the President–take time out of their busy schedules writing laws and things to throw a shout-out to some of the little people back in their home district. And this week, Tulsi Gabbard, the Democrat who represents Hawaii’s Second District, did exactly that in a June 24 Roll Call op-ed she co-authored with California Congressman Scott Peters.

The op-ed is pegged to recent moves by the House Armed Services Committee that would, in the authors’ views, hobble the U.S. military’s ability to purchase biofuel for its equipment. This, the congressional representatives feel, would harm both national security and local businesses.

“In Hawaii, for example, a company called Pacific Biodiesel provides full-time employment, benefits and retirement plans for 50 permanent employees,” the representatives wrote. “The company has created quality jobs for Hawaii construction and farm workers, truck drivers, and other administrative and technical experts. These jobs are supporting American families at a critical point in our nation’s fragile economic recovery.”

For Kahului-based Pacific Biodiesel, this is pretty big boost. For the last half-century, Roll Call has been known as THE paper that covers Capitol Hill in Washington. “As the leading provider of congressional news, legislative tracking and advocacy services, CQ Roll Call is the only media company that connects policy professionals and opinion leaders with the information and tools they need to understand and influence Congress,” states its website.

Pacific Biodiesel was the only private corporation singled out for praise in the op-ed. What's more, Gabbard's praise of the company comes at exactly the right time–on June 25, Pacific Business News reported that the Kahului-based firm is hoping to get a piece of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's $98.6 million Advanced Biofuels Payment Program.

Of course, while Pacific Biodiesel is a big name on Maui in the alternative energy world (the company converts recycled

kitchen grease into diesel fuel), in the grand scheme of biofuel they’re a small company. In fact, they’re so small that Kelly King, Pacific Biodiesel’s vice president, has so far only contributed $2,500 to Gabbard’s Tulsi For Hawaii election committee, according to campaign data compiled by the Federal Election Commission.

Keep in mind that according to the Center for Responsive Politics, Gabbard raised nearly $1.8 million during the 2012 election–slightly more than $1 million of which came from “large contributors.” To put King’s contributions in perspective, labor unions like the plumbers and pipefitters, ironworkers and seafarers gave vastly greater sums of money ($10,000 each, according to the CRP). In fact, the organic grocery chain Down to Earth gave more than Pacific Biodiesel ($10,950).

All of which makes Gabbard’s tip of her hat to Pacific Biodiesel in Roll Call all the more impressive.

Hey, here’s a radical thought: let’s debate these things now, in public, before the powers at be start launching automated spy planes over American cities. And let’s not kid ourselves, either: we’d be hearing none of this if it wasn’t for former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden’s going public with details about the extent to which our nation’s surveillance state is pointed at everyday Americans.

Now given Hawaii’s traditional role as one of the nation’s most liberal states, you’d think that our congressional leadership would be quick to denounce the FBI’s sketchy use of spy drones on Americans. Well, yes and no.

“This is a burgeoning concern for many of us,” Senator Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, told Mueller during the June 19 hearing, according to Bloomberg News. It’s not a particularly strong denunciation, but it does count as a break with the Obama Administration and will undoubtedly be stronger than anything said by, say, Colleen Hanabusa, the Democrat who represents Hawaii’s First District and really, really wants Democratic Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz’s job. Hanabusa, you see,

It is a major setback for voting rights that the Court deemed Section 4 of the law unconstitutional. Congress must act quickly to make sure that the Voting Rights Act continues to stop discriminatory changes in voting laws before they are put in place.”

FAIRMONT KEA LANI GIVES COMPUTERS TO UHMC NEWSPAPER

MAUI SURFER GIRLS ANNOUNCE SCHOLARSHIPS In celebration of 13 years of business, Maui Surfer Girls is partnering with the Will Smith Foundation to provide local Maui girls with scholarships to attend their July surf camp. In addition to offering surfing and stand-up paddling lessons for individuals and groups in Lahaina, Maui Surfer Girls has put on these summer surf camps for over a decade, hosting hundreds of teen girls from all over the country.

Dustin Tester started Maui Surfer Girls as a way to pass on the skills she learned from her dad growing up in Maui to other young girls. The Maui Surfer Girls staff is made of seasoned surfing instructors with various educational and professional backgrounds. Targeting girls 12-17, their summer surf camps provide a holistic surfing experience that includes surf lessons, oceanography and surf etiquette talks, as well as other ocean adventures and fun activities. Regardless of past experience or ability, Maui Surfer Girls seeks to “empower girls through the sport of surfing.”

The passion Tester uses in her surf lessons translates to other areas of her life as well. She recently participated in her first Paradise Speedway dirt track race and loved it. Though her time trial wasn’t the most impressive (“[Someone] asked me if I was driving to Foodland,” she told me), Tester’s second time behind the wheel proved more successful–and addicting. So much so that she hopes to invest in her own Maui Surfer Girls car soon. Ultimately though, Tetster’s true love remains surfing.

Honolulu native Trisha Kehaulani Watson has been honored along with 14 others at the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s 11th Annual Leadership Awards Dinner in Washington D.C. The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a nonprofit organization that acts as a resource for marine sanctuaries across the nation, recognized Watson for her work as the Native Hawaiian representative on the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council and her position as chair of the sanctuary’s first Native Hawaiian subcommittee.

“Dr. Watson has been a proactive volunteer, serving the sanctuary through her efforts to protect cultural and marine resources while ensuring that Native Hawaiian management practices are considered,” said sanctuary superintendent Malia Chow in a June 21 press release.

WANNA INTERN AT THE BAILEY HOUSE? The Bailey House Museum in Wailuku is offering a paid work study program for high school students. Known as the Alexa Kahui HC&S High School Internship, it calls for interns to work in various museum departments including the gift shop, grounds, office or on special projects. The internship requires 18 hours of work per week during school breaks and six hours on Saturdays when school is in session.

Funding is provided through a $3,500 grant from Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar, which has been funding the high school internship program since 2007. The program began in an effort to create an interest in preserving Maui’s history while teaching general office and customer service skills.

In a display of community partnership and sustainability, the Fairmont Kea Lani Maui recently donated four computers to the University of Hawaii Maui College’s student newspaper, Ho’oulu. The refurbished computers were donated as part of the resort’s Electronic Waste Diversion program, which is based on the fundamental environmental adage: reduce, reuse recycle. The reduction of electronic waste keeps devices out of landfills and provides technology to worthy community organizations.

“We’re overjoyed to refurbish and donate computers that are no longer needed at the hotel,” said the Fairmont’s General Manager Charles Head in a June 18 news release. “UH Maui is an obvious choice, considering our previous partnerships with The Maui Culinary Academy, the Institute of Hawaiian Music and the Travel Industry Management program. We wish the students the best of luck with their newspaper this fall.”

Ho’oulu faculty adviser and journalism instructor Sarah Ruppenthal confirmed the value of the partnership, stating, “We are so grateful to The Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui for this generous donation. The computers will be used in various capacities and are a much-needed addition to our program.”

Ho‘oulu is an independent, student run, online newspaper covering campus news, features and ideas at the University of Hawaii Maui College. The paper takes its name from the Hawaiian word meaning “to inspire,” and hopes to publish a print version when classes resume in August.

Chengdu, China, barber Liu Deyuan, 53, is one of the few who still provide traditional “eye-shaving,” in which he holds the eye open and runs a razor across the lids’ inner surfaces. Then, using a thin metal rod with a round tip, he gently massages the inside of each lid. Liu told a reporter for the Chengdu Business Daily in April that he had never had an accident (though the reporter apparently could not be enticed to experience the treatment himself, preferring merely to observe), and a highly satisfied customer reported afterward that his eyes felt “moist” and his vision “clearer.” A local hospital official said eye-shaving can scrape away scar tissue and stimulate the eyes to lubricate the eye sockets.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY One of April’s most popular Internet images consisted of face shots of the current 20 contestants for Miss South Korea–revealing that all 20 appeared eerily similar, and Westernized. Commented one website, “Korea’s plastic surgery mayhem is finally converging on the same face.” Wrote a South Korean commenter, “Girls here consider eye surgery just like using makeup.” Wrote another, “I loved this episode of the Twilight Zone.”

The country has the highest rate of cosmetic surgery per capita in the world.

THIS WEEK IN WHALE MEAT DOG CHEWS Michinoku Farm of Tokyo finally agreed in May to withdraw its whale meat dog chews, but only after angering environmentalists for having favored the country’s pampered canines over endangered North Atlantic fin whales, which were the source of the chews.

The meat was purchased from Iceland, which openly defies the international moratorium on whale meat. (Japan officially disagrees with world consensus on which species are endangered.)

CLOSER TO GOD THAN YOU Crystal McVea, author of a recent book chronicling her near-death experience, told a Fox & Friends TV host in April that among her most vivid memories of the incident was getting so close to God that she could “smell” him. And in May, Anna Pierre, a candidate for mayor of North Miami, Fla., announced on her Facebook page that she had secured the endorsement of Jesus Christ. That would be doubly fortunate for her since a month earlier, she had complained that unknown people had been leaving badluck Vodou-ritual feathers, food scraps and candles on her doorstep. (Jesus’ stroke is apparently not what it used to be: She finished seventh in the race.)

RELIGIOUS MESSAGES FROM ALL OVER A catering company in Leicestershire, England, became a holy site in May after the Hindu owner found an eggplant that resembles the elephant-headed Lord Ganesh. He said that he prays to it now twice daily and has so far welcomed about 80 visiting worshippers.

GUN CRAZY More than 50 Iowa sex offenders have open-carry gun permits, thanks to a two-year-old state law that requires any disapproving sheriff to demonstrate “probable cause” in advance that a sex offender will use a gun illegally in order to reject his application. Before that, a sheriff could use a sex offender’s previous felony conviction as sufficient cause. ll we wanted was a nice day at Oneloa with da ohana. And it was cherry fine until a few boys decided to ruin the day. Though all parties probably contributed to the altercation, it didn’t have to get out of hand.

Yeah, you young bruddahs are raging with hormones and alcohol (and probably other mind-altering substances) but that’s no excuse. You weren’t strong enough to embody aloha and just walk away and allow everyone to have a fun day at the beach with friends. No, one of you had to sucker punch a guy. Then, when the guy was down, your buddy kicked him in the head while another buddy–standing off to the side–threw a large rock at him. Very tough! Especially when people came to the aid of the beaten guy, you took off running like scared little girls. Is The Maui County Council Nuts?

Before they vote on a formal investigation into the Arakawa Administration’s decision to knock down the old Wailuku Post Office, we look at the council’s own actions–and inaction–concerning the building over the past two years.

rom their eighth floor offices in the Kalana O Maui building in Wailuku, the Maui County Council members had one of the best vantage points on the island to watch the demolition of the old Post Office at the corner of Wells and South High Streets. They could hear–and feel–the rumble of the jackhammers as contractors slowly dismantled the tough old building, which dated to 1959. On the morning of Thursday, Jan. 17, Councilmember Mike White looked out a window and snapped a photo of a Bobcat near the building, which he then posted to his Facebook page. “Looks like they are beginning to demolish the Old Wailuku Post Office,” he wrote.

At the time, White’s photo and caption were matter-of-fact, even boring. These days, though, they’re a lot more damning.

That’s because just two weeks later, on Feb. 1, White began publicly grilling officials from Mayor Alan Arakawa’s administration about their decision to demolish the building (though White has since removed the photo from his Facebook page, MauiTime

obtained a screenshot of the image).

Since then, the demolition of the old Wailuku Post Office has grown into a full-fledged scandal, complete with frontpage stories in The Maui News. At a June 17 hearing, the Maui County Council’s Policy and Intergovernmental Affairs (PIA) Committee was suddenly shocked– Shocked!–that the administration had decided to knock down the old post office.

They voted 6-3 (Gladys Baisa, Bob Carroll and Don Couch dissented) to authorize a formal investigation into the “potential misuse” of funds to pay for the demolition of the building that the council thought was going to be “rehabilitated.”

Such an investigation may require the council to hire outside attorneys (that the brand-new County Auditor just appointed by the council would be a better investigator seems not to have come up).

“The Council made a clear, unequivocal policy decision to rehabilitate the building as it existed when approving the Fiscal Year 2012 budget,” said PIA Committee Chairman Riki Hokama in a June 10 press

release on the hearing. “The Mayor cannot unilaterally decide to demolish the building and plan construction of new buildings because he thinks it’s a better idea. He must follow the Charter’s well-established legislative process. Sweeping the problem under the rug would send the wrong message and, frankly, it would call into question the Council’s integrity.”

It’s not surprising that Arakawa’s administration vehemently objects to Hokama’s assertions. “We look forward to clarifying our position to the council in regards to this matter,” Maui County Managing Director Keith Regan said in a statement sent to the press immediately after the June 17 PIA hearing. “We were in fact prepared to answer any questions today and even submitted more than 200 pages of supporting public documents, which illustrate the timeline of communication with council members in regards to the old Wailuku Post Office project. This timeline shows when we met with the council about the project, what was discussed and any subsequent communication with the council

either as a whole, or individually.”

But largely missing from the public and media debates about the fate of the old Post Office has been a simple question: Is the Maui County Council nuts?

Given the circumstances–and the fact that the public record shows that for the last two years Arakawa’s people have been briefing the Council on their plans to demolish the old Wailuku Post Office–it’s more than a fair question. The same public record shows no one at the County Council questioned those demolition plans until White raised the issue on Feb. 1–two weeks into the demolition. What’s more, even after the Feb. 1 hearing, the Council never obtained (or apparently even discussed) a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the administration to halt the demolition, which proceeded on schedule.

Councilmembers Hokama and White, who have been leading the charge for an inquiry into the post office demolition, didn’t return calls for comment left at their offices.

But one of the most mind-numbing aspects to the controversy is that the council has

largely (if not completely) supported the demolition. In fact, White has been completely open and honest about that.

“We like the plans that you’ve come up with,” White told County Capital Improvement Project Coordinator Wendy Taomoto during a Feb. 1 Council Budget and Finance Committee hearing. “And I think we all appreciate what you’re doing, but I just ask that you, that the Administration respects the Committee’s requirements and responsibilities.”

The “plans” White mentioned come from the planning firm Group 70, which county records show has been paid about $750,000 to design a large civic center “complex” that includes the current Kalana O Maui building and a couple new structures, including one at the site of the old post office. All this White apparently liked. What he didn’t like is how the administration was paying for both those plans and the post office demolition, which cost about $660,000. “[I]t occurred to us that if we’re, if you’re pulling money from the Old Wailuku Post Office appropriation, the title of that is ‘rehabilitation,’” White told Taomoto during the Feb. 1 Budget and Finance Committee hear-

ing, according to the minutes. “And, and the description and justification says, ‘rehabilitation of the Old Wailuku Post Office acquired by the County of Maui in 2009, to allow for occupancy for offices, meeting rooms, storage, improvements and anticipated to include rehabilitation of roof to extend the lifespan, upgrade 50 year old electrical, removal of asbestos on the first and second floor, removal of lead where necessary, install fire sprinkler improvements, exterior concrete repairs, and necessary structural repairs, so I want to... I’m making this point simply because I want the Administration to understand that we’re not the bad guys.”

White’s point goes to the heart of why the Council’s sudden outrage at the demolition is such a head-scratcher.

On this point White was correct: the $1.5 million appropriation, passed in June 2011, that the administration used to pay for the Group 70 plans and the post office demolition, did talk about “rehabilitation” of the building. But what White didn’t mentioned is that Arakawa’s people held numerous public briefings for the council on their plans–plans White apparently found acceptable.

White said during the April 5, 2011 County Council Budget and Finance Committee hearing, the minutes show. “I’m not sure that it makes sense to spend $6 million on an older building which is in such close proximity to the County Building if another alternate [sic] might be to use that space for a larger building and, and one that either matches or exceeds the size of the, the building that we’re in now.”

Nearly six weeks later (but still before the council passed their budget appropriations), White followed up with a May 18, 2011 letter to Managing Director Keith Regan about the pending $1.5 million appropriation. After acknowledging that the appropriation was “to rehabilitate the Old Wailuku Post Office,” he went on to ask for more specifics concerning a recent report on what the administration intended to do with the post office.

“Please advise as to whether the Arakawa Administration plans to complete any further studies on the various options, most notably the demolition and construction of a new building?” White wrote. “The report lacks detail on the square footage of a potential new building, the long-term savings from rented office space moving to a County-owned facility, and a thorough understanding of industrial health issues present in the existing building. May I also request the Administration’s plans and a timeline for the Old Wailuku Post Office being transformed to a usable space?”

On June 18 of this year, The Maui News reported that White said council members didn’t learn of the administration’s plan to pay for the demolition with the $1.5 million appropriation until the Feb. 1, 2013 budget committee hearing. While the May 18, 2011 letter from White doesn’t directly contradict that assertion, it raises serious questions as to what exactly council members were hearing during the numerous briefings and hearings on the fate of the old post office.

Still, the council had more opportunities to question the Arakawa Administration’s

demolition plans and object to their use of the $1.5 million appropriation. At the Oct. 30, 2012 County Council Budget and Finance Committee hearing, Cost of Government Commission Vice-Chairman Ron Kawahara told the committee that his commission “recommends that the old Wailuku Post Office building acquired at a cost of $1,540,000 in August 2009 be demolished and a new office structure built.”

At that same hearing, the minutes show Sananda Baz, Arakawa’s budget director, told the committee that “within another couple of weeks, there will be an RFP [Request for Proposals] issued for the demolition of the old Wailuku Post Office.”

If the councilmembers had concerns over the demolition, that was the perfect time to raise them. But the minutes show no one on the committee objected. In November 2012, the RFP went out, and The Maui News published a story on the pending demolition. But no one on the County Council voiced any public objections until Feb. 1, 2013.

Those PIA Committee members who voted on June 17 for a special investigation into the Arakawa Administration’s handling of the demolition used high language to justify the inquiry’s reported $20,000 expense. “We are responsible for for doing the checks and balances,” White said, according to a June 18 Maui News story on the committee hearing.

White is certainly correct, but a true investigation into the post office demolition should ask why the County Council wasn’t carrying out those “checks and balances” for the past two years, and why council members repeatedly listened to administration officials speak of knocking down the old post office, but didn’t bother to ask how they intended to pay for it until after the jackhammers went to work.

In any case, the earliest the County Council itself could vote on a formal investigation is Friday, July 5. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

$5 Breakfast!

The Four Sisters are at it again in Wailuku ery. I stop in there quite a bit to pick up their fresh pandesal, cheese rolls and famous butter rolls. The bakery is open seven days a week. The Four Sisters are really related and it’s a family owned and operated business. Stanley and Rufina Magbual are the founding matriarch and patriarch, and started the bakery business in 1983. Later they opened the restaurant. The Kitchen specializes in local favorites and their Filipino food like adobo and sinigang.

Knowing all this, I had to order the Tortang Talong. I can’t believe how delicious an eggplant stir fried with egg over it can be. It’s kind of like the meat jun of eggplant, without the dipping sauce. Tortang Talong delivers on richness and flavor. I ordered mine with adobo fried rice instead of plain steamed rice, and the fried rice is good enough to stand on its own. Large chunks of adobo and flavorful fried rice

s I drove into work the other morning I saw tempting signs on the newly opened Four Sister’s Restaurant that boasted $5 breakfast and lunch specials. Four Sister’s Kitchen used to be on the corner of Vineyard and Market in Wailuku, and before that they ran a fast and casual food spot in Lahaina at the same center as Hard Rock Cafe and Ruth’s Chris. Their new location is just a few doors down from their old location, in the new Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Residential Training Center.

When my stomach grumbled, I knew I had to stop in for a $5 breakfast test.

Hawaiian French Toast

So after checking in at the office, an office mate and I walked over to the new spot. I was really surprised to find a huge list of items on their $5 list: eggs and meat plates, pancakes, French toast, adobo fried rice, saimin and dry mein. One thing I’ve never seen on a breakfast menu was the Tortang Talong, a Filipino dish of eggplant and eggs. There are also $6 items like loco moco and marinated milkfish.

Upgrading to Eggs Benedict costs $8.95 and steak and eggs will cost $9.95.

Located in the newly renovated Weinberg Residential Training Center building , there are a few tables and chairs in their modest dining room, a display hot food bar where they will do lunch menu specials and an order counter. Their little air-conditioned dining room offers great people-watching in Wailuku.

I immediately recognized the woman behind the counter from Four Sisters Bak-

When I stopped in for lunch later, the dining room was filled with people grabbing lunch. Local kids out of school, tourists visiting the area wanting local food, and a few of us work nerds from Wailuku. The fresh crispy chicharon ($12 per pound) was tempting but I indulged in a cheeseburger and fries for $8.95. It is served "deluxe," which on Maui means lettuce, tomato and onion– a very healthy cross section of white onion, two nice pieces of baby romaine and beautiful slices of tomato, I might add. The burger was made in-house, and came with American cheese. A pile of hot crinkle fries rounded out the lunch.

made my $5 breakfast leftovers quell my lunch hunger pangs, too.

The French toast had fat slices of creamy egg bread batter-dipped, browned and dusted with powdered sugar. Served with a dollop of melted butter and a takeout container of syrup, it really satisfied– especially considering that it included two scrambled eggs (again, just for $5). While we waited to get our food, they brought us coffee (they also offer ice water).

Their lunches are reasonable, too. The list of sandwiches and burgers ranges from $8 to $9 and includes fries or salad.

The plate lunches start at $7.95, with teriyaki, katsu, tofu stir fry and more. The noodles and soups start at the same price with standards like saimin and oxtail soup ($12.95) as well as more exotic pig’s feet lauya and boneless bangus sinigang. They also have a chicken or fish wrap for $5.

The drinks here are mostly canned or bottled, but if you’re eating in they give you a nice glass of ice. They’re open Monday to Saturday, 7am-3pm and on Fridays, 7am-8pm. On special occasions they also bust out buffets like their special Mother’s Day feast. The Four Sisters also do some very reasonable catering.

The Art and Soul of Last Week’s Solstice

orshipping the sun really doesn’t seem that farfetched when you think about it. Midsummer solstice is one of the sun’s crowning glories: she shines her warm gold glory down on your face the most on this day. For yoga practitioners, this is special. The changing of the seasons is a time to clean out mental and physical baggage, and ritual yoga can aid your cause.

On last Friday’s solstice, 15,000 people gathered in New York’s Times Square at sunup to show their reverence, while 20,000 gathered in England at Stonehenge to marvel at the sun that was hiding behind an overcast morning. I remember bonfire parties burned for the midsummer solstice in Huelo in my youth, but this year I wanted to make the day epic in another way. No, I spent this solstice packing in a non-stop activities involving art and soul from dawn to dusk.

I began with instructors Rachel G and Megan at Body Alive Yoga at 7am with the goal of doing more than a hundred sun salutations. That totally got me high. Every pore was dripping. I never knew there were so many different interpretations to the sun salutation. I didn’t get to stay for the whole

class (which was going on for three hours), but I hope for their sake Shavasana was going to last at least 30 minutes at the end.

Next on the solstice agenda, I headed to Wailuku Coffee Company for a postpractice banana, peanut butter, almond milk, chocolate and espresso smoothie.

The Baldwin High School Alumni art show called Together but Apart is hanging there for June and it’s blowing my mind.

There’s mixed media work from carved wood, paint and paper on found objects, articulate acrylics and pen and inks. Spearheaded

by Baldwin High art teacher Jan Sato, participating alumni artists include Kirk Kurokawa, Edwin Ushiro, Natasha Chang, Noble Richardson, Amanda Bowers, Cianna Valley, Lianna Rosa, Jessica Garcia, Jennifer Matsumoto, Anna Duvall, Elmer Bio Jr. and Brandon R. Torricer, along with 2013 graduates Alexandra Underwood and Jordan Patao.

I was very taken with Bowers’ image of a squid and a pill swimming together on paper.

“My art reveals no sense of time or space and things are not only existing with one another, but forming strange and beautiful relationships,” Bowers says in her artist statement.

“The subjects may look recognizable but the

interactions are unfamiliar.” Her pharma-dillo with acrylics is equally engaging.

Nearby, Valley’s aquatint etchings are haunting black and grey images with names like “No wonder we never meet, you are digesting me.” A 2007 grad, she now runs a small print studio in Oakland, California.

Then there are Torricer’s paintings, which are galactic masterpieces inspired

by Jack London. “I paint objects the way I would have molded this state of being we all share,” he wrote. “I paint what is there but focus more on what is dismissed.”

With a head full of art, I headed to Paia Tattoo Parlor for a little time under the gun with artist/owner Justin Yates. The parlor is planning renovations for an art room in front to hold an incredible show planned sometime in August. But back to the art. We hele’d from Amigo’s just in time to get fancy for the Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s second annual installment of Art=Mixx. This time it was a runway edition, celebrating fashion in futuristic, artistic and cultural forms. The show included Koa Johnson with Kojo Couture and videos by Josh Meridith, Juicy with his Vulture.com line and videos by Tom Sewell and Jenny Jensen with her Solstice Scheherazade collection and videos by Jaisy Hanlon. Special guest Maui shoe designer Teri Edmonds contributed footwear as well.

I sniffed at psychedelics in chocolate and perused champagne tailgates as we strolled through the crowds and spocked out the trunk show. All the fashionistas were out

Prickly Pear Margarita anyone?

After a few hours with a needle in my side, it was time to drink tequila. A quick shot at Milagro’s was enough to numb the pain, and then I was off to Kihei to check out Amigo’s new location next to Long’s. The bar at the new location is great and celeb mixologist Manny Hinojosa was in the house mixing a fresh new batch of tequila cocktails.

While we sampled pupus like Amigo’s cameron cocktail, which reminded me of a stay in Cozumel, we sipped at a roasted jalapeno coconut margarita–a spicy coconut milk infused cocktail with Cazedores reposado. We also sampled the highland paloma that uses grapefruit juice and St. Germaine, as well as a prickly pear margarita with a spicy rim.

The prickly pear margarita quickly became my go-to during solstice; the beautiful fuschia color of the drink and the zing of the spice was draining the fancy margarita glass faster than I wanted to admit.

In fact, Amigo’s new cocktail menu is ideal for nurturing my romance with tequila and al pastor–plus, they’re just $8. Their $4

in full force: I spied Larissa Williams in a fresh black and white striped LeRu Couture handmade gown, Marissa Meyer in a handpainted and dyed silk column and Paul Janes-Brown in a dapper white suit strutting his bow tie stuff in the tie competition.

I clamored unsuccessfully for cold beverages and relegated myself to the drinking fountain as things got heated at the MACC. The whole Yokouchi Pavillion turned into a pumping Las Vegas nightclub after the last act onstage, which was the place to be when solstice turned dark.

Later we cruised Lower Main in search of snacks but were unceremoniously turned away at Tiffany’s, where the steak bite hour ended at 11pm. Undead Again Like a zombie, ‘World War Z’ is scary but then falls apart at the end World War Z ★★★★★

A

feeling of paranoid nostalgia swept across me during a screening of World War Z. An hour into the movie, which I caught with my family at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Theater, someone in the audience coughed. This is not what you want to hear when the movie in question is a virus-oriented horror movie.

It made me remember seeing Outbreak when I was in high school and, at the same theater, someone in the audience started hacking like Doc Holliday.

It made the audience laugh uneasily and caused me to shrink down in my seat and breathe through the inside of my t-shirt.

Movies about viral outbreaks really are best seen in the theater, where you’re surrounded by strangers, sharing the same oxygen in a close proximity and can squirm in your seat, enjoying the movie and wondering who

might have breathed into your popcorn.

World War Z deals with a zombie apocalypse, portrays the initial assault as the result of a highly contagious bite and shows a city swallowed up by the undead in a matter of minutes. The establishing scenes will remind movie buffs of similar sequences from Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, Independence Day and 28 Days Later but their familiarity doesn’t diminish how well done they are.

The action begins right away and the film portrays the desperate attempt for survival of a family of four with an unceasing intensity that never lets up. You’ll clutch your seat rest as you witness Gerry Lane struggle to keep his wife and children one step ahead of all the carnage around him and discover the origin of the zombie-creating virus.

What is especially unusual is that Lane is played by Brad Pitt, an actor you’d never expect to star in a lavish, globetrotting pulp thriller about rabid flesh munchers.

This won’t go down as one of the great zombie movies and doesn’t revitalize the genre the way Zombieland did a few years back. For all the state of the art effects, large-scale visions of worldwide de-

struction, and considerable star power of the lead, this isn’t trying to inflate the No-frills flying zombie movie with David Lean grandeur or trying to be anything more than a good time at the movies. It’s also not at all faithful to the source novel by Max Brooks. Its PG-13 violence won’t satisfy the Fangoria crowd and horror fans will detect no trace of the social commentary that resides in all of George A. Romero’s zombie films. Taken just for what it is–a scary, race-against-time action movie–it mostly works.

Pitt is both a big asset and somewhat distracting in the lead. He’s the biggest star in the movie by far, carries the film well enough and gives a sympathetic performance. He’s also too good for this kind of movie.

After The Tree of Life and Moneyball, watching him act against a teeth-clicking, eye-twitching zombie is like seeing Daniel Day-Lewis play Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter; any lesser, half-way decent

actor could have played the role. The supporting actors are exceptionally good but this is Pitt’s show the whole way.

The movie’s biggest drawback is how uneven it is, as a solid start builds to a thrilling middle, only to have the tension deflated entirely by the third act. I won’t describe it, but the ending is a slow, underwhelming anti-climax, coming after an amazing passage set in Israel and a frightening zombie attack in a crowded airplane. Instead of momentum growing to a fantastic finish, the finale is a dud.

Despite the ample reports of a troubled production, the movie never looks like it was subject to re-writes or re-shoots. Like I Am Legend, it creates a fearful scenario and is dazzling most of the time. But then, like a zombie with stringy, rotted limbs, it just falls apart. ■

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Occasionally scrutinizing your actions and their consequences under a magnifying glass is good; making a habit of it, however, sucks, because your occasional slumps seem to warrant outright condemnation, and your pinnacles of excellence can prompt flurries of overdone self-congratulation. Don’t blow things out of proportion.

This week, remove the monocle of personal examination and step back to view the big picture. Don’t sweat the record highs and lows. Allow yourself to experience the troughs and peaks without obsessing over them, and trust that your overall best is more than good enough.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) When scorpions mate, they dance. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You come up with some of your best ideas while jogging, pooping, showering, or having sex; in other words, when you’re engaged by being in your body. It’s about time you learned (or remembered) that your most profound and meaningful inspiration occurs when a synergetic partnership forms between head and gut. Being ill can make you want to escape your body, but don’t let your recent less-than-pleasant experiences inside your own skin put you off from being there. Instead, unlearn the body memories recent infirmities may have taught you by occupying your flesh in ways you enjoy, and giving your brain (now unfettered by sick-and-tiredness) a chance to come up with the brilliant ideas you’ll need to play catch-up from all your recent downtime.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Whoa, horsey. Someone thinks he’s got you completely domesticated. Since you might as well be saddled, wearing blinders, and hitched to a wagon you never intended to pull, you can see where he got that idea.
