Harald-M. Lehnardt Aloha from the North Shore of Oahu. This month marks a milestone in my artist life: the opening of my newly developed web-store and gallery at www.anolani.com. I developed a commercial line of merchandise, fine-tuned my collection of artwork and am now ready to open the doors to the world. What an exciting process: to follow my passion, work hard as an artist, continue to be inspired by these beautiful islands and never stop believing. It’s the dream of my life. We offer Digital Fine Art Prints and originals in limited editions, or a thematic series including dramatic perspectives of the ocean, nostalgic elements of Hawaiian history and surf culture, as well as inspiring poetic text-and-image compositions that transform any interior environment into a sanctuary of spiritual comfort and wellness. These artistic offerings combine my European heritage, my passion for design and typography, and my interest and respect in Hawaiian culture and history, all influenced by surf culture and the beauty of Oahu’s North Shore. ANOTHER MEASURED CRITICISM Yeah, “no,” Axel. We will honor [the late U.S. Senator Daniel] Inouye’s military achievements and be stoked (Mauisphere, May 30, 2013). To have some wannabe hipster take that away from him is plain offensive. You insult the warriors from the 44th [sic]. Maybe it would suit your PC sensitive semantics if we called Destroyers Defenders instead. They are [EXPLETIVE DELETED] killing machines. Inouye was a killer. Sorry reality bites for you. How do [you] expect the military to honor one of its heroes? Naming a bench after him? You are a Goober dude. The Editor Responds: Thanks for your thoughtful letter. To be clear, Inouye actually served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II.

FUN WITH THE TAX CODE Thank you for pointing out the fallacy of TPM’s [Tea Party Maui’s] claim that they are not a political organization (Coconut Wireless, May 30, 2013). But it’s even worse. Using Harvest Technologies... leader in Regenerative Technologies

Tax law requires code 501(c)(4) organizations to operate “exclusively” to promote the “public welfare,” that is, the law says there can be no political function at all. The whole “49 percent” can be political comes from a 1959 IRS edit of the tax code that changed the word “exclusively” to “primarily,” but the IRS never defined “primarily.” The 49 percent figure is essentially an interpretation. Also, the change of this word in the tax code was never authorized by Congress. Last time I checked, the IRS cannot make law.

WHALE OF A COMMENT Whales are highly evolved intelligent sentient species in extreme peril and must be respected and protected forever (“Triumph For The Humpbacks?” May 16, 2013). We are all connected, are part of the web of life. Once there is a tear, it speaks of our own demise. They are vital to ecosystem and spiritual balance. Our government needs to do its job–protect our public lands, waters, wildlife and health. Attention to this most urgent matter would be much appreciated by all present and future generations of all species.

Must this be Maui's future?

MAUI COMMUNITY ASSOCIATIONS JOIN TO GIVE SOBERING PICTURE OF MAUI FUTURE

Post Office (it’s been demolished), the oped piece offers a very defensive reasoning for the current administration’s plans. “We’re trying to bring Maui County into the 21st century, which is why we’re placing photovoltaic panels on our facilities and looking at turning our trash into energy,” Regan wrote in the June 3 op-ed. The 21st century?! How about we finally incorporate Maui County into the 20th century first? Yes, the county is finally going to have an official in-house auditor. The voters approved one back in November, but it’s taking forever to get the job staffed and started. This kind of check on municipal power is good, but it’s just proof that when it comes to oversight, the County of Maui is still decades behind comparable Mainland cities and counties. The biggest example of that is the Maui Police Department. The whole thing is a monument to the lack of accountability that plagued big city and small town law

This is for anyone concerned about such things as population growth and land development. And no, I’m not talking about all the homeowners associations of the island hooking up into one monolithic bloc seeking to standardize rules about house paint colors and how often you mow your lawn all while enclosing the entire island behind a giant metal gate. Because such things have happened, though about 98 percent of them took place in James Bond flicks. Anyway, I’m talking about the Alliance of Maui Community Associations, a relatively new political group that seeks to get all of the county’s diverse communities talking together about common goals (and troubles). “Leaders from several (about nine) Maui Island Community Associations have been meeting since June 2012,” states the alliance’s new website (Maui-communities. weebly.com). “The monthly Monday evening meetings at Kaunoa Senior Center in Spreckelsville have provided us with an opportunity to exchange ideas, to discuss common and unique community issues, and to learn about county and state government actions that affect our community associations and the residents whom we represent.” Longtime Maui community activist Dick Mayer first alerted me to the alliance, and their website is a treasure trove of very sobering information about the future of Maui County. The homepage includes a beautiful chart showing population growth for the county since 1930, making it very easy for anyone to see that while more people than ever are moving to South Maui (Pop. 6744 in 1980 vs. 26,918 in 2010), places like Paia, Hali‘imaile and even Kapalua are relatively stagnant. From there, it’s very easy for anyone to find a whole library of articles, planning documents and charts detailing every major development project currently on the books in Maui County. Want to see the latest on Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s massive Pulelehua project in West Maui? Or do you

want to glance through the various environmental impact statements for South Maui’s Honua‘ula (Wailea 670) project? It’s all there, as well as information on all the community plans and community associations. Spend just five minutes at the website, and you’ll see that a generation from now, Maui County will be a very different place than that we know now.

many of the deer are on island. The number could be as low as 4,300 or as high as 42,000. Curiously, Maui Invasive Species Committee Manager Teya Penniman told the News that “we could care less about how many there are.” This seems odd, considering that a plan to control 4,000 deer would require considerably fewer resources than one attempting to deal with 10 times that figure. In any case, here’s hoping that Sproat and the various county invasive species committees treat the deer as an opportunity to feed poor and homeless people rather than as simply another invasive animal that needs to be wiped out. Unlike coqui frogs, veiled chameleons, pampas grass or miconia, the deer are sources of venison, which many people find to be delicious. It just seems to me that the county has a chance to do some good with what's otherwise a bad problem, and it would be shameful to waste what might be a cheap source of food for people in the county who have so little.

DEAR DEER Speaking of massive, unchecked population growth, it looks like the County of Maui is finally getting really serious about the ever-growing numbers of axis deer. Back in April. Maui County Environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons told me the county was in the process of hiring someone to look at the wildly disruptive invasive species full time (“Maui Environment Status Report,” April 25, 2013). “Eighteen have applied, and we interviewed the top six candidates,” Parsons said. On June 2, The Maui News reported that 30-year-old Kanalu Sproat from Hawaii Island got the job. According to the paper, Sproat’s last job was spent “doing natural resource management and overseeing rare and endangered plant and bird species” for the Oahu Army Natural Resources program. The stunning growth of the spotted deer, which consume endemic and endangered plants from Upcountry to South Maui, represent one of the most pressing invasive species problems on Maui. And according to The Maui News story, county officials have no idea how

enforcement a century ago. Sure, we have a police commission, but the commissioners do little else than meet once a month (inside the imposing police headquarters) to convey congratulations on whoever is officer of the month or whatever and then meet in closed session to reject the latest citizen complaint. Police spokespeople and the county corporation counsel’s office have told me that the department’s training emphasizes civil rights, but given the ruthless way officers handle citizens who try to film them in action, there’s ample reason to doubt their assurances. There’s also the Department of Liquor Control. That place is completely independent, with its own revenue stream, which makes it ripe for exactly the kind of corruption that departments like that were created to fight. Oh, and if you really want to take Maui into at least the 20th century, then we’ve got to shut down the sugar mill in Pu‘unene. Nothing screams 19th century imperial excess like watching that old mill belch smoke into the otherwise gorgeous Maui sky.■

Climate change is one of those issues that only affects certain people. Lauren Campbell, the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Conservation Director, knows exactly which people. “If you eat, you breathe, or you drink water,” Campbell said, “you need to be concerned about climate change.” She has the facts and knows the science to back it up, too. On Wednesday, May 29, Campbell spoke at the Waikapu Community Center. Her presentation was coordinated by the non-profit group Organizing for Action (OFA), which is engaged in a nationwide effort to promote the discussion of climate change. The organization encouraged attendees to write and tweet representatives about the issue. Before Campbell’s talk, statements from Representative Tulsi Gabbard and Senator Brian Schatz were read, expressing a dedication to addressing climate change (Senator Mazie Hirono and Representative Colleen Hanabusa did not comment, and nobody mentioned the delegation’s recent support of a Farm Bill amendment that would continue taxpayer funded protections for the environmentally unwise Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar). Campbell’s presentation was a thorough overview of climate change, from the Earth’s natural climate cycles to why current changes are so dangerous. She even forecast what would happen to the world if current trends continued. It was all disconcerting, to say the least. Greenhouse gasses help to insulate the planet but can also warm global temperatures. We humans have been releasing unprecedented amounts since the Industrial Revolution. Thus, more heat energy from the sun remains in the Earth’s system and less is radiated back into the solar system, causing a change in climate and weather patterns. While today’s climate change deniers are right in saying that the planet’s climate goes through natural cycles, models show that

at the facts. It’s really to change that conversation from that negative to ‘OK, this is a problem. And now what are the approaches that we can take that are meaningful and make a difference?’”

CHINESE DELEGATION VISITS HAWAII The number of Chinese tourists who visit Hawaii each year increased by 25,000 from 2008 to 2011. With China expected to eventually be our top tourist market, there’s no question that the emerging powerhouse is important to our islands. So it’s probably a good thing that Hawaii’s House Speaker (and Maui boy) Joe Souki along with Speaker Emeritus Calvin Say and Representative Ty Cullen recently met with a Chinese delegation which included Yuan Chunqing, Chairman of the Standing Committee of Shanxi Provincial People’s Congress, and other senior officials from Shanxi Province. According to the May 30 news release sent by the Majority of the House of Representatives, the leaders talked about ways to “promote opportunities for growth in educational and cultural exchanges, business opportunities and tourism.” The leaders also signed a Memorandum of Understanding, said Charles St. Sure, the assistant director of communications, though as of this time there are no specifics about the agreements or consensus reached. ■ axel@mauitime.com + @axelbeers For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

Past Grandma’s Coffee in Keokea, a little ways down the winding road that leads to the unseen parts of the island, is a small park that overlooks everything from Makena to Ma'alaea. It’s the first place with enough space to turn around if you’ve realized you’ve driven too far, and it’s also the site of Sun Yat-sen Park. The park honors Chinese hero Sun Yatsen, who led a revolution in the early part of the 1900s against the dynastic ruling power in China. When the Republic of China was established in 1912, he was the first president. Sun Yat-sen passed in 1925, and in 1949 the Republic of China (RoC) was pressed by the rival People’s Republic of China to withdraw to Taiwan, where the RoC still governs. Kula was a favorite spot for the revolutionary, who spent time on the island planning and preparing for the revolution. The same was true for his brother Sun Mei, who was also a Kula resident and even owned Kahului General Store along with a hundred more properties on Oahu and Maui. On June 3, the eight-foot statue of Sun Mei was unveiled at the park, to accompany the memorial of his brother Sun Yat-sen. A crowd of about 50 government officials and family members from China and Taiwan were in attendance at the event, which included Mayor Alan Arakawa and members of the Sun family. “Working together, these two brothers changed the world, and we are proud that they did this from right here in Kula,” said Arakawa according to a June 3 news release. “We hope that Chinese visitors will come to Maui to see these statues and to learn more about the part our island played in their nation’s history. I want to personally convey my gratitude to the Sun Mei family for this beautiful statue.” According to the release, Sun Mei played an integral part in the revolution by selling his personal assets in order to support Sun Yat-sen.

CLIMATE CHANGE TALK

the current rate of change is unprecedented. Models predict a change of two to six degrees Celsius in the next century—a much more drastic change than the five degrees Celsius per 5,000 years rate the Earth has exhibited in the last two million years. The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere—which correlates with temperature—is also unprecedented. This May it reached 400 parts per million, far more than the 170-300 ppm levels the Earth has maintained over the last 800,000 years. These changes will not be without consequence, Campbell said. They will most likely result in eroded shorelines, longer droughts followed by flash flooding, intensified storms, crop damage, ocean acidification, a decline in ecosystem biodiversity, rising sea levels and coral reef damage. What’s more, our imported food supply will decline, our water sources will become less reliable, we’ll be more prone to more dangerous hurricanes and, on top of everything else, will have to pay a premium for local fish. Forget that beachfront property, because beaches won’t exist anymore. Snorkeling in the shallows may become as exciting as snorkeling at your local pool. But we can still change our course and mitigate some of the worst outcomes. Get informed and share your knowledge, Campbell encouraged us. But first, “walk the walk.” “Examine your lifestyle,” she said. “Start with one thing and go from there… Every individual makes a difference.” Hope Busto-Keyes, another OFA Hawaii co-State Leader, added “We need to change the conversation so the conversation stops looking at deniers to look

CULTURE CLASH Five self-proclaimed devout, conservative Muslim women host the TV series Building Bridges on Channel A9, presenting the seemingly contradictory case against both the female head scarf and Turkey’s turn to secularism. A report on Slate. com in May noted that the five are “mostly bottle blonds... [with] neon lipstick” wearing “brightly colored satin pantsuits and T-shirts with designer brand names that stretched over their chests.” Building Bridges in principle supports interfaith dialogue, but guests (noted Slate) “often appear... with their eyebrows arched in the manner of a serious person certain he is the victim of a practical joke.”

CREATIVE SMUGGLING Abdullah Riyaz, 50, was arrested at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India, in April after he appeared to be uncomfortable sitting in the waiting area. Officials found four “biscuits” of solid gold in his socks but obviously thought there might be more, and after nature took its course, found Riyaz to be one of those rare humans with the ability to brag that he once excreted gold (eight more “biscuits”).

MODERN TIMES A report circulated in April that an apparently Orthodox Jewish man (likely a “Kohen”) had tied himself up, head to toe, in a plastic bag while seated on an airline flight–likely because his teachings told him that flying over a cemetery would yield “impurities.” News of the Weird mentioned a similar report in 2001. Airlines have made accommodations in the past, even in the face of criticism that a man in a plastic bag is a safety hazard. (Exceptions to the Kohen belief: Accidental tears in the bag are excused, but prepunched air holes not; Kohenim unaware of the cemetery overflight in advance do not need protection; and deceased family members yield no impurities.)

The chairman of the National Showcaves Center in a Welsh national park, aiming to halt a recent downturn in tourism business, threatened in April to sue the U.K. National Weather Service for its “all too [frequent]... gloom and doom reports.” The NWS had called for snow and cold weather over Easter weekend, but no snow fell, and the cold weather was tempered by sun and blue skies. He also suggested adding “health”type warnings to forecasts, e.g., beware that weather reports might be wrong.

NICE DOGGIES In New Haven, Conn., in March, police had trapped two car-theft suspects in a multifamily building whose occupants were hiding from the suspects,

thus necessitating urgency in ending the siege. Officers ordered a K-9 unit but were told it would be delayed. In a tactic departments occasionally employ, officers still threatened to release the dogs immediately, and to make the threat credible, available officers began barking. The suspects quickly surrendered rather than face the vicious canines.

SOME PARENTS SHOULDN’T HAVE KIDS Herbert and Catherine Schaible, members of the First Century Gospel Church in Philadelphia and believers in faith-healing rather than medical care, were convicted in 2011 in the bacterial-pneumonia death of their two-year-old son, Kent. As a condition of probation, they promised medical care for their remaining eight children, but in April 2013, their youngest son, Brandon, died after severe diarrhea and pneumonia, again treated only by prayer, and they were arrested–and the other children removed from the home. The medical examiner called Brandon’s death a homicide, and the couple also face five to 10 years in prison for violating probation.

WEIRD COFFEE News of the Weird first learned of kopi luwak in 1993–coffee beans sold as gourmet because they had been swallowed by certain Asian civet cats and recovered from feces and washed. Since then, as Internet news of kopi luwak has spread, it has become no longer obscure, and in April, the environmental-activist website MongaBay.com warned that, based on increased demand, civet “farms” had sprung up in Indonesia and that civets were being caged for their entire lives solely for access to their poop. While none of the main kopi luwak civet species is formally “endangered,” activists warned that populations are dwindling for, said one, “the most ridiculous threat... to any wildlife I have seen yet.”

NATIONAL INSECURITY Catholic nun Megan Rice, 83, and two other peace activists were convicted in May of breaking into the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn., last year–with “intent to harm national security.” Sympathizers lauded the activists’ motives and asked whether national security was actually “harmed,” but somehow the intruders’ stealth “attack” was treated seriously. That is, three amateurs cut through numerous fences undetected, then bypassed several sensors and alarms (either malfunctioning or unmonitored) before being stopped by a lone guard. While Israel currently frets over Iran’s accumulation of up to 500 pounds of highly enriched uranium for building one bomb, Y-12 houses an estimated 400 tons. ■ chuck@mauitime.com

THE HAWAIIAN LEGEND EDDIE AIKAU LIVES ON IN A BIG NEW DOCUMENTARY WORDS BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO • ART BY DAN MERKEL & HARALD-M LEHNARDT

G

o to the official webpage of the annual Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau surf contest and you’ll find three curious but telling words: “WHO IS EDDIE?” Clicking on the question takes you to a page full of words and pictures, dedicated to the man whose name now adorns one of the biggest surf contests in the world. Though the famous waterman and lifeguard from Oahu’s North Shore died 35 years ago, framing the question in the present tense works. A figure of tremendous stature and respect throughout most of his adult life, Aikau’s influence stretches throughout Hawaii to the present day. “I watched and admired Eddie Aikau out there and decided I wanted to be like him,” Archie Kalepa, the County of Maui’s chief of Ocean Safety a big wave surfer in his own right, said in a Sept. 6, 2012 Lahaina News story. “I wanted to be in that North Shore scene.” Now, finally, people can see Aikau’s life through the sprawling new documentary Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau. It’s a big production, full of all the color and adventure that punctuated Aikau’s scant 31 years. The film will debut in Hawaii on June 12–the opening night of the Maui Film Festival. In addition, festival organizers are awarding Aikau and Nainoa Thompson of the Polynesian Voyaging Society their annual Visionary Award. Showing the film under the stars on the Wailea golf course as part of the Maui Film Festival is entirely appropriate, given that Eddie and his brother Clyde first began to idolize big wave riders by watching surf films at the Waikiki Shell when they were growing up. “I’m going to catch the biggest waves ever ridden and make our name famous in the surfing world,” a teenage Aikau told his parents after seeing one film of the Hawaiian surfer Kealoha Kaio, according to Coleman’s book. Audiences should always be skeptical when words like “legend” and “hero” get stuck to mortal beings, but the film makes clear that Aikau is more than deserving of such titles. Still, how do you tell a story everyone already knows? Every surfer who’s ever dipped a toe in the Pacific has at least heard his name because of the immense popularity of the Quiksilver contest. And who, in Hawaii at least, hasn’t yet heard or seen the words “Eddie would go” (or “Eddie wouldn’t tow” or any of the other countless variations that crop up to advance this or that cause). For the makers of Hawaiian (directed by Sam George and produced by ESPN Films, Stacy Peralta and Paul Taublieb), their task is easier. Aimed at Mainland audiences who likely haven’t ever ridden a wave, the film will offer little new insight to anyone who grew up in Hawaii or has at least read Stuart Holmes Coleman’s 2001 biography Eddie Would Go: The Story of Eddie Aikau, Hawaiian Hero. Of course, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing compelling about watching Aikau talking with Jim McKay, or surfing skyscraper waves at Waimea (Without a jet ski! Or a leash!), or seeing Thompson, who was with Aikau on that fateful 1978 Hokule‘a voyage, cry when recalling what it was like to watch him paddle away from their capsized canoe. Hawaiian is packed with colorful film footage of life in postwar Hawaii, but it’s gripping largely because the story of Aikau is so extraordinary. Possibly because the things he did on Oahu were so big, it’s easy to forget that Edward Ryan Makua Hanai Aikau was born on Maui in 1946. His father Solomon worked at Kahului Harbor as a stevedore, and young Eddie spent his first dozen years in nearby Rawfish Camp (it’s all condominiums now). He went to St. Anthony’s, along with his

doing,” surfer Kelly Slater says in Eddie Would Go. “Obviously, it was a sad way to see him go but almost a fitting end to the way he lived his life. Being lost in the ocean is tragic, but it’s also romantic at the same time.” Politics wasn’t Aikau’s thing, but Coleman wrote that his favorite song was “Waimanalo Blues,” and that points to someone not at all happy with the development of Hawaii and the long history of disenfranchised Hawaiians. The new Polynesian Voyaging Society was the perfect place for Aikau to fuse his waterman skills with his growing awareness of Hawaiian history and traditions. Aikau was just 31 in 1978 when the Hawaiian voyaging canoe Hokule‘a overturned in rough seas on its second voyage. Meant to travel from Oahu to Tahiti and show the world that Polynesians traveled to Hawaii by way of sophisticated celestial navigation and not dumb luck, it had beautifully demonstrated exactly that two years earlier. But its second voyage ended just off Molokai when it capsized in bad weather shortly after leaving Oahu. Wet and shivering on the overturned hull with their radio gone, the crew’s hopes faded fast. There was nothing shocking or unusual about Aikau’s request to paddle 20 miles to Lanai to get help. Lacking options, Captain Dave Lyman agreed. In the early 1800’s, as both Hawaiian and Eddie Would Go make clear, Aikau’s ancestor Hewahewa was a kahuna guarding Waimea–a role Eddie took upon himself, and apparently took very seriously. His relationship with the ocean, expansive ohana and huge circle of friends all pointed to a man dedicated to keeping those around him healthy and happy. Even his own name advertised his destiny–Makua Hanai roughly translates as “nurturing care-giver.” There are layers of irony surrounding Aikau’s death. He set out to rescue the crew, but in the end the Coast Guard found the crew without him (though Marion Lyman-Mersereau, a crewmember who went on to write Eddie Wen Go, a children’s book about Aikau, says in the film HaPhoto Courtesy Waka Moana / Wikimedia waiian that his paddling out to get help inspired her and the others to maintain hope). Aikau spent moving the family into a Chinese graveyard in Pauoa Valley. his adult life saving people who ventured out into the danThere, Solomon and his kids would tend to the tombstones gerous Waimea waters, but today he’s largely remembered in exchange for rent-free living. From the accounts I’ve read, his youth was happy, if uneventful. A great deal of it, as remains true with most kids in Hawaii, was spent in the water. “Eddie spent as much time as he could in the ocean, swimming, diving and exploring the silent world below the surface,” Coleman wrote in Eddie Would Go. “Occasionally, Eddie would see sharks ominously cruising in the distance, but he was taught not to be afraid of them or any other creatures in the sea. The water’s warm, sensual embrace was as soft and comforting as a woman’s touch, and it was the beginning of Eddie’s lifelong love affair with the ocean.” More than a surfer, Aikau was the definition of a waterman–he surfed, paddled, swam, dove, snorkeled and, ultimately, sailed. From his idol, Duke Kahanamoku, he adopted a relaxed, almost regal approach to surfing. His years in the water brought an understanding of the ocean that made him comfortable around the same ocean currents and sea creatures that terrify so many. But from nearly the moment he arrived on Oahu in 1958, death took on an ever-increasing role in Eddie Aikau’s life. His father Solomon had brought everyone to Oahu seeking more opportunities, and he certainly found one by

Nuka Here’s why Haiku’s new Japanese restaurant is so popular WORDS BY JEN RUSSO • PHOTOS SEAN M HOWER

Chef Hiro, Moon Greene and Chef Gabriel Begin

Nuka 780 Haiku Rd. 808-575-2939

here’s a plate of raw fish and greens on the sushi bar in front of me. “I opened up this restaurant just so I could eat this salad,” Moon Greene tells me. The stack of perfectly seared ahi slices are gorgeously arranged over organic leafy veggies, avocado, shrimp, sunflower seeds. It’s topped with what Greene calls “Hiro’s miso magic,” a dressing so divine you might open a restaurant just so you could eat it, too. Greene’s passion for food and style didn’t happen overnight. In fact, you’ve probably tasted her food before. Along with Yuri Soledade, Greene co-owns Paia Fish Market, the North Shore’s iconic corner restaurant with its Best of Maui awardwinning fish burgers, tacos, chowder, fish and chips and all things seafood. When I asked what made her want to open another

Chef Hiro and the Nuka Roll

restaurant, she said, “I wanted a spot so I could work with Hiro. I love his food.” Hiro is Hiro Takanashi, Nuka’s master sushi chef. He’s been making sushi for over 30 years on Maui and his dedication to the art is apparent in Nuka’s lineup of specialty rolls and pupu plates, where they serve sushi and Japanese food izakaya style. The closest translation to izakaya food in English is pub fare, but the description doesn’t do the food justice. If you’re not in the mood for extravagant specialty rolls, they have an amazing selection of nigiri sushi, sashimi and simple rolls like Spicy Tuna and California, and for a buck you can swap nori for soy paper. Salads, Udon and soup and Ostumami plates are also available. The latter are little plates that you can share or devour all on your own, like tempura, Karaage, Poke and Miso Butterfish. Then there are the bowls, the Nuka or Donburi, which serve a selection of proteins and veggies over Nuka rice. The Nuka bowl is reminiscent of Vietnamese and Korean one-bowl rice dishes that include bean sprouts, cucumber, onion, cabbage, basil,

mint, peanuts and either tofu, chicken or salmon, all lined up in neat rows with a sesame dressing on the side. Greene says Nuka sources lots of veggies locally, some from coowner DeWitt Lickle’s gardens as well. “Yes, his fish and farmed vegetables supplement the restaurant,” says Greene. “We do not have a full scale operation to supply the amount of food we need. Things that are locally grown on the menu are eggplant, daikon, snap peas, salad greens, shiso leaf, corn and whatever else happens to be in season.” As for Hiro, like most sushi chefs I’ve met, he didn’t want to discuss his career, preferring to let his food do the talking. The Haleakala Roll, Lollipop Roll and Nuka Roll spoke volumes about his control over flavors and fresh fish combinations. In the Nuka Roll, raw ahi and snapper intersect with cukes, avo, shiso leaf with spry jalapeno and tangy ponzu. You can set your chopsticks aside with the Lollipop Roll, where slim layers of cucumber and fish mold sushi pops together

of experience in Japanese cuisine as well as the ability to speak fluent Japanese. His kitchen is equipped with a special fryer imported from Japan so your Tempura, Karate and Agedashi come out light and crisp. Nuka uses rice bran oil, which is as healthy as you can get away with when frying foods. The fried Gobo chips are the perfect starter–shaved gobo root fluffs and curls, but they melt in your mouth. Gobo is a common ingredient in Japanese cooking and is packed with vitamins and minerals. The Miso Butterfish is incredible, too: sweet misoinfused and broiled cod that’s tender and irresistible. The list of delicious Otsumami extends over a whole page of their menu–too many to fit into one meal–so I will have to come back to sample through all. The dining room is small, containing just 10 tables, but the sushi bar can hold 12. The cement sushi bar and polished aluminum lighting chairs give the room a modern industrial feel that’s softened by

Nuka Bowl

over Nuka’s own house-milled rice. Each slice of the roll comes pre-poked with a pick up stick. And the Haleakala Roll? That’s a rich mash-up of a baked Dynamite Roll and California Roll with salmon and bonito. Greene says she found the perfect spot for Nuka after she eyeballed the old Haiku car parts store (which also used to be the original Haiku Mart). She teamed up with Lickle and Soledade to create a vision for sushi in Haiku, complete with an exhibition kitchen. The Gyotaku art on the walls belongs to Lickle. The name “Nuka” means rice bran, which is fitting for the restaurant that carefully sources their own brown rice and then mills it in-house. They also utilize that bran to create their own pickled veggies, a Japanese dish called Nuka Zuke. At one point, Chef Gabriel Begin showed me some of the Takuan root pickled in the process of making Nuka Zuke. Begin learned to pickle in Japan and brings plenty

bamboo, a slatted wood ceiling and a wall of seating cushions. The bar keeps a tight selection of Sake, Shochu, wine and beer to accompany your izakaya fare. They also have a list of martinis that can be made with sake as well. The cucumber ginger mint martini with a sugar rim was fantastic–dry with plenty of zing from the ginger. I’m also partial to Hitachino beer but they also serve Kirin, Sapporo and Tsing Tao. Nuka just serves dinner now, but Greene says that they plan to create a lunch deli, too. It’s already gaining a popular following, with tourists, locals on date night and groups of dinner-goers packing the place on the weeknight I visited. Join them for dinner Tuesday thru Sunday, 4:30-10pm. Starting in July, they will be open seven days a week. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

Maui Film Festival Your guide to all the galas and events BY JEN RUSSO

Get your drink on.

T

his year the Maui Film Festival celebrates 14 years of joining the film industry with our island culture. And Hawaii will be at the forefront, with the festival starting with the debut screening of Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau by Sam George at the Celestial Cinema, as well as a Visionary Award presentation for Aikau (represented by his family) and Nainoa Thompson of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. “After 14 years of being the curator of the Maui Film Festival, there has not been a schedule I’m more proud of,” says Barry Rivers, festival director. “This year’s festival aims to have a program that intersects smart and heart.” Actress Kirsten Dunst will accept the Pathfinder award on Friday, and actress Jessica Chastain will be honored Saturday evening with the Nova Award. On Sunday, actress Brie Larson will get the Rising Star Award. Many of the filmmakers of the films getting screened will be present, and the filmmaker’s panels on Saturday at the Wailea Beach Marriott will give folks a chance to get intimate with the movie-making process. River’s Film Festival has a great lineup of films that will screen in Wailea at the Celestial Cinema, the amazing outdoor theater on the golf course, Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s Castle Theater in Kahului, and the Seaside Cinema between the Four Seasons and Grand Wailea where you can catch free screenings. What’s more, you can do your red carpet thing at the gala events. There, you can rub elbows with celebs and filmmakers while noshing and sipping with the creme de la creme of Wailea till the wee hours. The opening night Twilight reception on Wednesday, June 13 at Hotel Wailea will feature haute Hawaiian cuisine by Capische? (your ticket will also include access to the evening’s films at Celestial Cinema). Then there’s the event cacao aficionados wait all year for: The Taste of Chocolate at the Four Seasons kicks off Friday evening

at 8pm. This year, Mabanzi Marima Maui will be entertaining with African tunes. On Saturday, Wailea’s exclusive tasting event gives festival attendees a chance to sample the best creations of the top chefs in Wailea. Taste of Wailea’s chef’s tables read like a who’s who in the culinary community: Alan Wong’s Amasia, Cam-

eron Lewark of Spago, Ruth’s Chris Steak House featuring Dan Bader, Bev Gannon’s Joe’s and Gannon’s, Peter Merriman’s Monkeypod Kitchen, Mulligan’s on the Blue featuring Chef Danny LeBag, Ko and Chef Tylun Pang, Mark Ellman’s Mala, Brandon Shim at Tommy Bahama and Capische’s Brian Etheredge and Chris Kulis. The Taste of Wailea is a culinary masterpiece, paired with wines by Southern Wine and Spirits, Pau Vodka, and and Stella Artois on draft. Tom Conway and Lily Meola will be entertaining until the sun sets and the films start rolling. On Sunday, get yourself up early for some Wailea Beach time and participate in the Hollywood Sand Sculpture Contest in front of the Grand Wailea at 8am. The festival ends late on the golf course Sunday, but not before residents and visitors alike have enjoyed scores of shorts, documentaries, action flicks, cartoons, comedies and dramas. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

After Earth Everything about this film is apocalyptic BY BARRY WURST II

After Earth ★★★★★

Rated PG-13 / 100 Min.

P

icking on a bad movie can be a lot of fun for film critics, a form of “revenge” that justifies having suffered through a cinematic turkey. The word was out on M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth not long before release: accusations of being a vanity project for co-star and co-producer Will Smith and another unfortunate outing for Shyamalan, who was once called “The Next Spielberg,” which seems incredible now. I take no joy in panning his latest movie, though I experienced no joy in watching it either. The biggest problem with the film is its complete lack of entertainment value. The elder Smith stars as a starship commander who oversees expeditions to Earth, now a dangerous planet inhabited by mutated monsters determined to kill all they encounter. Jaden Smith plays the muchloved commander’s son, whose verbal application to a prestigious academy has been rejected. The father and son are the

only survivors of a crash landing on Earth. While the father is critically wounded, he is able to instruct his son by radio contact the ways to survive the deadly planet. The design of the film is unconventional (a nice way to put it) and quite ugly. A futuristic apartment building resembles a chic circus tent, while the innards of a spaceship look somewhat like that of Noah’s Ark. Earth is full of intriguing CGI creatures that are nothing more than set direction, serving no purpose other than giving the hero something to attack or run from (the same goes for the monster on the loose). The most exciting scene is the spaceship being pelted by a meteor shower, which is filmed in a way that oddly obscures the action. The filmmakers saved some money by not showing the ship’s crash landing. Yet, Shyamalan’s decision to frame a scene with what looks like a shower curtain, opening and closing endlessly, annoys more than it intrigues. The same goes for Will Smith’s long monologue about how “fear is a choice:” the camera doesn’t move, remaining on him in a dilapidated flight deck, droning on and on. It isn’t interesting and neither is Smith’s glum, strangely not at all compelling performance.

Hopefully pondering a new career

Scenes of papa Smith draining blood from his leg, son Jaden’s face puffing up from an allergic reaction, piles of dead animals, combined with a morose tone and slow pace, won’t win over anyone but the most forgiving audience. Shyamalan has made a strange film with distinctly offbeat touches that might seem bold, uniquely non-commercial over time. What will never age well is Jaden Smith’s flat performance; even more so than The Karate Kid remake (which had Jackie Chan’s surprisingly potent performance to elevate it), this proves that Jaden is a likable kid but not yet an actor, and definitely unable to carry a film. Will and Jaden were terrific together in The Pursuit of Happyness. Though they’re once again playing father and son, there’s no chemistry between them.

There are big missteps at the screenplay level, particularly the weapon of choice in the high-tech future being a double edged sword and the laughable premise of “Ghosting” (this movie’s version of “The Force”). As a father/son bonding parable, it plays like a son whose parents refuse to let go of his umbilical chord. A scene in which Jaden fights off a tiger’s attack on a nest of baby eagles best sums up the film: it’s a pointless CGI set piece that ends with the depressing sight of mutilated chicks. It leaves you feeling letdown and feeling bad for having cared. I sincerely hope Shyamalan, whose earlier films were wonderful, recovers from this and other recent missteps. Meanwhile, over family dinner, may the Smiths recall how wonderful their Happyness was... but never bring up After Earth. ■

...to questions from page 4

1: D–The EKO Compost site. 2: E–Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) For a sign that’s often noted for your mind, you Gems are hardly divorced from your bodies. It seems that every Gemini I know has at least one astonishing physical feat at their disposal; “Janice” can fit her whole hand in her mouth, “Lee” does stunts with ping pong balls and orifices that would make porn stars blush, and “Alister” can squeeze his whole body through an unstrung tennis racket. Still, there’s been a recent rift between your brain and bod. To heal that, practice just being in your skin. The traditional ways (going to the gym or taking up jogging) are fine, but I can tell your spirit (and your avid fans) are hoping you’ll adopt an astonishing new trick. Do it!

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Like every Sag, at some point in your life you’ve had (or will have) a moment when most of your old girlfriends and/or boyfriends find themselves in the same room, and bond based on their experiences with you. Smart Sagittarians know how to breathe through this kind of thing, how to bear the harrowing and humbling weight of all that shared gossip and judgment. Since multiple chapters of your past may be convening soon to compare notes, stay cool. The worst that may happen is they’ll have a good laugh at your expense. At best, an old flame could be rekindled, or at least sparked up enough to get you a “for-old-time’s-sake” fling.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Tides, basically, are caused by the massive weight of the ocean trying to fall towards the Moon. If lunar gravity can cause impressive movement in immense bodies of water, why shouldn’t it affect squishy, watery humans? You’ve got a plethora of interesting entities orbiting you these days, despite your inattention. Don’t underestimate them. No matter how ineffectual they may seem, reflecting only the wan light of a distant sun, they may have more effect on you than you think. This week, consider which ones are pulling you in the right direction, and which ones you ought to send winging into the asteroid belt.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Sometimes you stumble into weird, unexpected realities. For instance, you might find yourself soaking in a tub shaped like a champagne glass, or napping on a heart-shaped bed. In the mirrored ceiling, you watch your reflected surprise as you suddenly snap awake and wonder: “How in the hell did I get here? Is this what I thought I was getting into?” I’m probably wrong about the specifics, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this week’s slightly bizarre twists aren’t exactly what you had in mind when you set out on this path. All is not lost, though; now that you’ve figured it out, you can start looking for shortcuts back to where you really need to be.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You’re poised on the dewy, verdant lip of lush opulence. Whole fields of wildflowers are inhaling collectively, their moist buds aching to burst into riotous bloom. Vulvae are dripping with summer juices; dicks are aching with swollen virility; entire flocks of lovesick avians are nearly plummeting to their deaths while trying to reinvent the quickie, out of necessity; cats are caterwauling violent operas in the alleyways; and it’s all for you, Leo. Even if it’s not expressly in your honor, it might as well be, for no one is as primed as you are to reap and appreciate all this ripe summer lust and romance and passion, to milk every nectar-laden drop.

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) It’s time for some cutbacks, a little pruning, and I’m not talking about just trimming the pubic bush. Some parts of your life are streamlined and organized, while others are about as aerodynamic as a garbage truck, and just as full of crap. But redesigning your M.O. holds new challenges now. Going totally solo isn’t your style anymore, remember? You’ve got to figure out a way to carry along all the people who mutually love and adore you. So, when executing an overhaul and revamping your life, don’t think two-seater sports car; think super-light monorail.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) It’s not that Virgos are unloving; au contraire, you’re usually the sweetest, most wonderfully adoring people to have around. It’s that often your love takes the form of doing millions of nice things for your loved ones, simplifying their lives in every way you can think of. And those who cherish you do notice that. But some of the people you adore (especially those Leos and Pisces, this week) are craving something a little more impractical, even romantic. When all it takes is a little sweetness that has nothing to do with schedules or To-Do lists, pleasing them is worth the effort.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You’ve been blindfolded and marched who knows where. You could be standing on a gangplank above chum-crazy-shark-infested waters, or lingering by the altar under the cyclopean eyes of cameras with marriage-vow teleprompters, a white gold ring, and an overeager fiancé. You have every right to flip your shit, but I hope you won’t. Wherever you end up, you had a hand in getting there, either through passive inaction or unreasonable, stubborn immovability. Now that you’re on the spot, before you reject it out of hand, at least consider the possibility that this is where you secretly wanted to be all along.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Lately, I’ve viewed you as a gifted young director, producing award-worthy movies every day—if only they were actually caught on film. Since your recent artistry has been all about gifted social interaction, I’m going to share the wisdom every successful artist wields: Know when to stop. Becoming obsessed with perfection can only end badly; usually, by you screwing up the piece for good by adding too much to it. Your genius at evoking brilliant performances from all the “players” in any given situation is at its peak. Don’t ruin it by overdoing it. Trust your gut and know when to say, “And…scene.”

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) It’s time for a long-overdue reminder about the nature of crises. Yes, they’re just one more oppressive burden of shit added to your already overloaded emotional cargo hold. They threaten to sink the entire ship of your life. But for someone as resourceful and determined as you are, a lightning strike need not be pure disaster. Any challenge is an occasion to shine. The next bolt that dares to pin you between the waves should be seized. Put on your asbestos gloves and climb it (this is a metaphor, you can do that here). Ride the chaos of the thunderhead for a while. It might be scary, but it’ll also carry you further faster than you’ve gone in months.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) There are no new stories, just a handful of ancient tales cut apart and pasted together into new forms, told in new ways. But things are changing. Science is learning to break down matter and energy into smaller and smaller units; in similar fashion, we approach the Planck’s Constant of stories, and use these tiny pieces in radioactive new ways. Don’t bitterly believe that you know the ending to the yarn you’re spinning now. You have the skill to divide what’s left into miniscule pieces and reweave them into a pattern so intricate, beautiful, and unpredictable that it might as well be something totally new.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) This week, you’ll enjoy an unusual amount of perspective and clarity. Maybe you can finally see how a tiny shift can make something supporting, loving, and nurturing seem oppressive, smothering, and restrictive, or vice versa. Being given space can feel like being abandoned, or being romantically pursued can suddenly resemble sinister stalking. The majority of your circumstances could truly go either way, depending on how you want or believe they should. Now that you know that reality is what you decide it is, you’re free to opt for the version that makes you happier. Why you’d choose otherwise is beyond me.
