Not sure where to begin with David Kawika Crowley, except that his presence on the ballot either shows the Hawaii Republican Party is capable of great imagination in its selection of U.S. congressional candidates, or great desperation. Crowley, as of press time, lacks a job, a home (outside of his van) and any record of having received campaign donations, despite the fact that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s running for a relatively high-profile office. His claim to fame lies in the musical rather than political worldâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;he co-wrote the songs â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hawaii 78â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hula Lady.â&#x20AC;? In 1991, he lost a bid for the mayorship of Hawaii Island, and his campaign today is practically non-existent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As of August 2012,â&#x20AC;? the Washington Times reported, â&#x20AC;&#x153;he had raised no money for his campaign, which consists of a website [kawika4congress.com], his personal appearances and sign waving along the side of Oahuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highways.â&#x20AC;? His biggest political issue today is getting bars and restaurants to once again allow smoking indoors. MauiTime endorsed him during the 2012 Republican Primary election because we want to see more candidates like Crowley, who live like normal people and arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afraid to speak out about what they truly believe.

‘Gifts of Aloha’ An open letter to Vida G. Bottom, FBI Special Agent in Charge of Honolulu Division

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO Ms. Bottom, You’ve been running the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Honolulu Division for five months now, which I can only imagine is quite a change from your previous postings in Washington, DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. But I see from the May 21 FBI press release announcing your new assignment that your most recent job was chief of the Public Corruption/Civil Rights Section at the FBI’s Washington, DC headquarters, and that, more than anything, is why I’m writing you this open letter.

You see, the County of Maui Department of Liquor Control is out of control.

I’ve covered the department for a while now, and if there’s any agency in the county that could use a disinterested third party nosing around its files and inspectors, it’s the old LC. There is some precedent for this. About a decade ago, three former Honolulu LC inspectors wound up in federal prison on racketeering and bribery charges. It was quite the scandal over on Oahu. And while I don’t have the evidence to allege anything like that is going on here, there is plenty to suggest that something worthy of FBI scrutiny is taking place at LC headquarters in Wailuku. “[T]his isn’t the mainland,” recently retired Maui County LC Inspector James D. Lloy allegedly told rookie LC Inspector Justin Dobbs in late April 2011 when Dobbs questioned some of the freebies he and his fellow LC officers were allegedly receiving from establishments they were supposed to be investigating. “[T]hese are gifts of Aloha [and] go along with the program if you want to make it in this Department.”

The quote appears in a lawsuit Dobbs filed in Maui County Superior Court on Friday, Oct. 12 against the County of Maui, Liquor Control Department Director Franklyn Silva, LC Chief Enforcement Officer and retired LC Officers Harry Matsuura and Lloy. I was unable to locate either Matsuura or Lloy by press time (Silva told me Lloy had recently left Maui and gave no forwarding number, and though he said Matsuura was “in the book,” I could find no listing for him).

It’s a stunning lawsuit, full of names and dates and all sorts of charges. As you might expect, the County of Maui’s Corporation Counsel’s office is taking a very hard line against the suit, calling it “frivolous” and “without merit.” Here’s their official response, written by Deputy Corporation Counsel Richard Rost and released a few minutes before 5pm on Oct. 19: “The claims contained in Plaintiff Justin Dobbs’ complaint are without merit,” read the Corporation Counsel response. “Plaintiff was terminated by the County for misconduct.

Plaintiff’s claim for unemployment benefits was rejected because Plaintiff was terminated for cause. In addition, Plaintiff abandoned his union grievance that sought reinstatement to

his former job with the County.”

Then the Corp. Counsel’s office–perhaps flush with pride over their recent motion that got former Maui County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jacki Jura’s harassment and wrongful termination lawsuit dismissed from court (in July 20100, MauiTime published my story “Tales From The Maui Prosecutor’s Office,” which has background on Jura’s suit)–got a bit cocky. “The County aggressively defends against frivolous lawsuits,” the Corp. Counsel response helpfully noted. “The County is confident that it, and all the named defendants, will prevail.”

You know what’s really ironic about that Corp. Counsel response? Back in 2006, I watched Rost’s father, a private attorney, win a rare but complete exoneration for his client before the Liquor Control Board of Adjudication.

Dobbs alleges that numerous hostess bars also sent the LC’s main office “gifts of food including sushi rolls, pastries [and] doughnuts on a weekly basis” and that “All of the employees of the Department of Liquor Control Enforcement Division and Administration Division would eat these gifts.”

I’m sure you’re already familiar with this, but according to Dobbs’ complaint, here’s what the Charter of the County of Maui says on gifts: “No officer or employee of the county shall: Solicit, accept or receive any gift; directly or indirectly, whether in the form of money, service, loan, travel, entertainment, hospitality, thing or promise, or in any other form, under circumstances in which it can reasonably be inferred that the gift is intended to influence the officer or employee in the performance of

Dobbs’s suit says he spent five years as an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army from 1997 to 2002, and was honorably discharged. From 2005 to 2008, he says he worked as a Deputy Sheriff in the small Northern California town of Marysville. In early 2010, Dobbs’ suit states, he applied to be a Maui County Liquor Control Officer. After passing the written test and getting approval to begin training that summer, he moved his family to Maui.

But Dobbs worked for the LC for barely a year. Terminated by the LC in August 2011 after receiving a letter from his LC superiors stating “that he was under investigation for workplace violence for false allegations that were mischaracterizations taken out of context.” In fact, Dobbs alleges in his complaint, Dobbs says he was a whistleblower who got sick of watching his fellow LC inspectors and employees get tons of freebies from the establishments they were supposed to be inspecting and was fired after taking his concerns to his superiors.

“He thought he could just talk to them,” said Dobbs attorney Carpenter-Asui in a phone interview. “He thought he could massage them into changing. He had just received an impeccable evaluation and a raise. But they came back real fast.”

Dobbs’ complaint names names–both of the LC inspectors Dobbs allegedly witnessed acting in a manner contrary to county policy and of the bars and restaurants (mostly Korean hostess bars) that were offering up free food, drinks and more (Honolulu attorney Venetia K. Carpenter-Asui, Dobb’s attorney, clarified

the officer’s or employee’s official duties or is intended as a reward for any official action on the officer’s or employee’s part.”

At times, Dobbs’ complaint reads like a dime novel. Here’s one of the more salacious excerpts, which allegedly took place at “Donna’s Place” (I think he means “Donna’s Lounge,” as there is no “Donna’s Place” listed on Maui): "[O]n or about December 2010 Plaintiff and Defendant MATSUURA entered the front door, and Plaintiff saw what looked like under age females run to a room in the front of the establishment and close the door. Plaintiff began walking to the room, and was stopped

by Defendant MATSUURA who told Plaintiff ‘we do not regulated [sic] the back rooms because there is no liquor served there', but these were under age females (younger than 21 years of age) in a liquor premises, which was a violation of law, but Defendant MATSUURA still prohibited Plaintiff from investigating or entering the room."

I was unable to get any sort of comment from a representative of Donna’s Lounge, which seems to be closed. When I called the number listed for that establishment, a woman answered the phone saying, “Cindy’s.” When I asked if the place used to be Donna’s, she hung up on me.

And apparently the LC haven’t restricted themselves to hanging out at hostess bars.

One of the more surprising allegations in Dobbs’ complaint was that Dobbs says he witnessed

LC Investigator Lloy and a few other LC trainees eating and drinking for free “on a weekly basis” at the swanky Four Seasons Resort in Wailea. Dobbs alleges that Lloy really seemed to enjoy his time there.

“Defendant LLOY would also approach the female hostesses in the Concierge Room for high rollers on the floor above the employee cafeteria, and hug and kiss them, and drink and eat for free, while he was on duty in the capacity of Field Supervisor,” states Dobb’s complaint.

Now Crissa Hiranaga, a marketing and public relations coordinator for the Four Seasons in Wailea, wouldn’t comment on Dobbs’ allegations. “It is the resort’s policy that we do not comment on open litigation,” she told me.

If true, Dobbs' allegations amount to corruption, and there's no law enforcement agency on Maui capable of investigating it properly. Sure, on Oct. 19, The Maui News ran a front page article on the lawsuit, but the paper didn't name any of the retired LC personnel, bars or restaurants listed in Dobbs’ complaint.That's their deal, but if you’d like to download a PDF copy of Dobbs’ complaint in all its glory, we’ve posted it on MauiTime’s news blog at Mauifeed.com.

STAND-UP PADDLER STAND-UP GUY And the winner of this week’s Who’s The Gutsiest Person On Maui? contest is Mr. David Peterson, 55, of Pukalani. By now everyone on Maui knows about Peterson, a stand-up paddler, and his Oct. 18 encounter with a 6-8 foot shark about 300 yards offshore of Kanaha Beach Park.

Did you guys read the Oct. 19 Maui News story on this guy? Peterson’s out there on his board, paddling away, when the shark knocks him off his board. What happened then is straight out of a movie.

Here’s Peterson, quoted in the story: “I didn’t see anything,” he said. “I landed on the back of the shark. It had a hold on my board… It wouldn’t let go. I started beating it over the head and yelling at it.”

Peterson eventually pushed the shark away and climbed back onto his board.

He was, to put it mildly, extremely lucky.

Not only was he uninjured, but his board wasn’t too badly damaged, allowing him to paddle back to shore. And then, just because he’s a great guy, Peterson apologized to other surfers for the beach closure that inevitably followed the attack.

It’s easy to forget that sharks–which are revered by the Kanaka as ‘aumakua or “family gods”–are all around us.

Usually the first question asked by someone arriving on a Maui beach (usually about the time they’re applying sunscreen) is, “Are there sharks out there?” The answer, of course, is yes.

Sharks rarely attack people (we apparently don’t taste good to them), but rarely also doesn’t mean never. The last fatal shark attack on Maui (indeed, in Hawaii), took place at S-Turns in Kahana back in 2004.

A fisherman friend of mine once told me about an evening spear-fishing trip he took on the Westside, and the adventure of sorts he had while trying to drag his prize back to shore while a shark tried to take it away.

Sharks are ancient, fascinating creatures that deserve respect, not fear. Though if

MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL STANDS UP FOR LAND DEVELOPERS Man, was I ever naive. When I first heard that the Maui County Council General Plan Committee was (again) taking up the proposed Maui Island Plan, and that said plan would include “urban growth boundaries”–a new tool used by mainland planners and land use advocates to keep development at sustainable levels–I thought that maybe Maui was finally entering the 21st century.

My bad.

On Oct. 18, the committee not only voted to eliminate greenbelts from the plan’s proposed maps, but they also voted to remove parks and open space designations from the proposed maps.

“Our council’s efforts to ‘direct’ growth... appears to be directed just where landowners want it!” smart growth activist Lucienne de Naie emailed me shortly after the council vote. “In many cases, citizen review groups tended to support a project being included in the urban

boundary because preservation area were included. The maps showing preservation areas were reviewed and okayed by several past planning directors as well as the Office of Corporation Counsel.”

For de Naie, who has worked on and studied the proposed Maui Island Plan for years, the votes were beyond bitter.

“Suddenly, at the eleventh hour, it appears that word had come to the Council from Corp. Counsel that showing preservation areas on the directed growth maps is not desirable,” she continued.

“All of our community plans have ‘park’ and ‘open space’ areas indicated. Municipal governments are allowed to designate lands for future preservation without it being a ‘taking.’”

Oh, I almost forgot: Councilmember Don Couch’s motion to remove Makena Resort’s 390-acre development parcel from within South Maui’s growth boundaries failed, which amounted to a big snub of the Kihei community.

“The Council’s General Plan Committee did NOT listen to the request by the Kihei Community Association to leave the 390 acre area mauka from the Makena Resort out of the Urban Growth Boundary on the Maui Island Plan,” activist Dick Mayer emailed shortly after the vote. “The Councilmembers who rejected the KCA request and sided with the developer were: [Gladys] Baisa, [Mike] White, [Mike] Victorino, and [Joe] Pontanilla.”

Of course, there’s still a possibility that all the General Plan Committee’s work on the Maui Island Plan may ultimately come to nothing.

The last Maui County Council failed to pass the plan in the two years it was seated, and the current council has until Dec. 31 to finish the job.

whining about the sorry state of news these days more than a news guy), so I’ll spare the details. Like the music and pornography industry, many in the news media are suffering because so much of their content is freely available on the Internet ( MauiTime, like all alternative weeklies, doesn’t suffer from this problem because we’ve always been giving it away for free).

So it’s not too surprising to read headlines these days about how Newsweek will cease print publication and go Internet-only at the end of the year or how Clark Kent is so fed up with the state of the mainstream media that he’s quitting The Daily Planet (seriously–look it up!). So it’s doubly nice to see a story about how the Internet is helping newspapers. Well, newspapers that are nearly a century old.

When done, the Chronicling America website (chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) will contain “historically significant newspapers from all U.S. states and territories published between 1836 and 1922” and will be completely free to access. GREAT ART! For September’s Digital Design Weekend at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, artists Michiko Nitta and Michael Burton commissioned soprano Louise Ashcroft to sing, altering pitch and volume while wearing a face mask made of algae. According to the artists, since algae’s growth changes with the amount and quality of carbon dioxide it receives, Ashcroft’s voice, blowing CO2 against the algae, should vary the growth’s “taste” as to bitterness or sweetness. After the performance, the audience sampled the algae at various stages and apparently agreed. The artists said they were demonstrating how biotechnology could transform organisms.

ENTREPRENEURS Jordan and Bryan Silverman’s startup venture, Star Toilet Paper, distributes rolls to public restrooms in restaurants, stadiums and other locations absolutely free–because the brothers sold ads on each sheet. (Company slogan: “Don’t rush.

Look before you flush.”) Jordan, with 50 advertisers enlisted so far, told the Detroit Free Press in August that he came up with the idea while sitting on the can at the University of Michigan library.

FIRST-WORLD PROBLEMS After an international trade association reported that women bought 548 million pairs of shoes in 2011 (not even counting those used exclusively for sports), the manufacturer Nine West decided to start its own cable TV channel with programing on “various aspects of footwear,” according to an August New York Times report.

Programs will feature celebrities rhapsodizing about their favorite pair, women who hoard shoes (purchasing many more than they know they’ll ever wear even one time), tips on developing one’s stilettowalking skills and shoe closet designs. It’s about a “conversation,” said a Nine West executive, “not about a shoe.”

CASHING IN ON DEATH Habersham Funding of Georgia and its competitors make their money by buying terminally ill clients’ life insurance policies for lump sums, then continuing to pay the policies’ premiums so that they collect as beneficiaries upon death. The companies’ business model therefore depends on those clients dying quickly; a client who outlives expectations turns the investment sour. Thus, according to an August report by the New York Times, the companies run extensive background checks on the illnesses and lifestyles of potential clients and employ sophisticated computer algorithms that predict, better than doctors can, how long a client will live. Supposedly, according to the report, the companies are nonchalant about erroneous predictions. No company, they claim, has an official policy of hoping for early death.

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Scorpion antivenom made in Mexico sells in Mexico for about $100 a dose, but for a while over the last year, the going rate in the emergency room of the Chandler (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center was $39,652 a dose, charged to Marcie Edmonds, who was stung while opening a box of air-conditioner filters in June. She received two doses by IV and was released after three hours, to later find a co-pay bill of $25,537 awaiting her (with her Humana plan picking up $57,509), according to the Arizona Republic. The Republic found that Arizona hospitals retailed it for between $7,900 and $12,467 per dose– except for Chandler. Following the newspaper’s report, Chandler decided to re-price the venom at $8,000 a dose, thus eating a $31,652 “loss.”

ANOTHER SENSELESS DROUGHT TRAGEDY Among the least-important effects of last summer’s drought in the Midwest: Officials overseeing the annual Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw said there would be fewer high-quality cow patties. Said chairperson Ellen Paulson: “When it’s hot, the cows don’t eat as much. And what was produced, they just dried up too quick.” A few patties had been saved from the 2011 competition, but, she said, “It’s not like you can go out and buy them.”

THE ANIMAL KINGDOM Researchers writing in the journal Animal Behaviour in July hypothesized why male pandas have sometimes been seen performing handstands near trees.

They are urinating, the scientists observed, and doing handstands streams the urine higher on the tree, presumably signaling their mating superiority. A San Diego Zoo researcher involved in the study noted that an accompanying gland secretion gives off even more “personal” information to other pandas than the urine alone.

THIS WEEK IN PET ORTHODONTIA Spending on health care for pets is rising, of course, as companion animals are given almost equal status as family members. aui takes Halloween celebrations seriously. As long as we can remember, Lahaina’s celebration–starting with the adorable Lahaina keiki parade along Front Street and ending in the wee hours with the bartenders counting their tills–has been a defining destination street party for the last 30 years. We don’t call it the Mardi Gras of the Pacific for nothing.

Back in 2008, the Cultural Resources Commission denied Lahaina Town Action Committee’s request for their permit to close Front Street and have a stage and entertainment under the Banyan tree.The commission’s reason? Strong opposition stemming from complaints of vulgarity.

But there was a benefit to the CRC’s crackdown. Suddenly, there were costume parties in Kihei from Diamond’s to Mulligan’s, and Upcountry at Casanova and Stopwatch. Carousing through bars like Three’s, South Shore Tiki Lounge, Ambrosia, Dog and Duck, Kahale’s and Sansei was the happening, while Front Street was fading.

Then last year, Lahaina Town Action Com-

mittee, along with Halloween supporters, worked with the Mayor Alan Arakawa’s administration and succeeded in bringing Halloween back to Front Street. Shrugging off the old Mardi Gras reputation, Halloween in Lahaina was reborn like an alien from John Hurt’s chest. This time, good, clean family fun was the emphasis from the road closure at 3:30pm until the street sweepers come through. Shuttles from War Memorial and Kalama Park and extended bus schedules eliminated that prickly partying and driving issue.

This year, Halloween falls on a Wednesday.

If you don’t yet have your one (or seven) costumes, don’t flail–you can get plenty of ideas for dressing up with the seasoned professionals on Maui. In South Maui, The Love Shack and The Enchantress possess all you desire for dress-up. There’s no mask needed when you marvel at the makeup theatrics at Island Status in Kihei or Lahaina’s Henna Lounge, where zombies pour out of their doors. At Maui Mall, Maxi’s has long been the one-stop costume shop that few people can wait to get their fangs into.

So dress up, follow the candy trail and dance each night away from Oct. 26-31.

Merriman’s Inaugural La Paulee Wines that Dance on the Mouth

BY JEN RUSSO It turns out Oktoberfest and beer aren't the only things Europe has going for it in the fall. The French celebrate the grape harvest in Burgundy with La Paulée de Meursault. It started with a congenial lunch party but soon evolved into an international wine celebration.

Merriman’s Kapalua Beverage Director Jeff Groh promises that once you taste Burgundy, it will change your life forever.

He should know, because he’s been tasting them all year and has picked his favorites to highlight at this fete that promises no California and no corkage: in fact, in classic French tradition, he’s encouraging everyone to bring their favorite Burgundy pick.

“Everybody has a list and going to La Paulee is definitely one of those things I have to do before I kick the bucket,” says Groh. “I figure if we can get this rolling as a super fun annual wine event, it will help me pass time until I meet the right member of the French aristocracy and get an invite to the party in Meursault. Another consideration was just trying to come up with an event that was both wine-focused and super fun. I’d rather throw a wine party than a stuffy wine dinner and

the whole history of the La Paulee fit perfect into that mindset. I was especially stoked on the idea of a wine event where everybody could bring a bottle to share–you just don’t see those types of events very often in a restaurant. Operators are often too focused on just selling wine at these dinners. We wanted to make sure we were selling fun.”

The Burgundy region in France is known for its glorious pinot noir and Chardonnay.

This event is about recognizing and tasting the richness in beautiful grapes grown in this region for about 2,000 years. The first La Paulee events were organized in the 1920s

by Count Lafon and attended by winemakers and their close cohorts. These days there’s a charity auction, formal dinner and the lunch held in the Chateau de Meursault is attended by over 700 wine enthusiasts.

“Flavor, aroma, structure and history set these wines from Burgundy apart from the rest,” says Groh. “Sure, you can occasionally run into a wine from Oregon, Cali or New Zealand that smells like it could’ve been Burgundy, but they’re rare.

When Burgundy is really good–and this is both reds and whites–they’re sumptuously

layered with aromas and flavors. From a purely structural standpoint, Burgundies at their best balance on a razor’s edge of ripeness: where delicacy in structure is balanced by multilayered aromatic complexity.

What’s more, your opu will be satiated by a thrilling five courses designed to go with the wines. That means bringing your appetite to experience Hawaiian Regional Cuisine with a French twist, and sometimes French cuisine with a Polynesian influence.

“It’s a two-part theme to the dinner,” says Groh. “Part one, dishes that will go great with the wine; and part two, Hawaii Regional Cuisine but with a bit more of a nod to French culinary influence. The first course is a composed cheese dish; second course is an opakapaka royal glacage; third course is a quail and cocks comb dish that, excluding the passionfruit, isn’t that far afield from a coq au vin dish you’d find in a Parisian bistro; fourth course is a duo of prime beef; and dessert is a Kula strawberry crepe. Chef always does a great job of incorporating the flow of wines into the design of his menus. We have two clear white wine-friendly courses and two courses that

will be brilliant with pinot noir.”

As for what what wines Groh will be pouring, he says there will be “a white from a lieu-dit that Dominique Lafon owns in the Macon, a 1er Cru Meursault that was produced by Michel Picard for the Hospices de Beaune, an epic Bourgogne rouge from 2009 that was made by the great Frederic Magnien, a Passetoutgrain from Robert Chevillon that is made from 45 year old pinot noir vines in a declassed area of Nuits-St-Georges and a 2005 Morey St Denis from Auguste and Lucien Lignier.”

So is Groh taking off to the original La Paulee anytime soon? Probably not.

“Hey France I’m still waiting for my invitation,” he says. “Don’t make me feel like the last girl that gets invited to the dance!”

Cloud Atlas It’s like seven bad movies for the price of one!

loud Atlas is about a closeted musician (Ben Whishaw) who collaborates with a celebrated composer (Jim Broadbent) on a legendary piece called “The Cloud Atlas Sextet.” It’s also about a Karen Silkwood-like investigation, in which the findings of a resourceful young woman (Halle Berry) threaten to expose a sleazy corporate fat cat (Hugh Grant). It also portrays a publisher (Jim Broadbent) trying to escape imprisonment from a Shawshank-like retirement home. There are other, even more fantastic subplots, like the one about a post-apocalyptic warrior (Tom Hanks) who speaks in a clipped form of pidgin English and struggles to keep his tribe alive. We also witness the journey of Sonmi (Doona Bae), a 22nd

century worker whose escape from a controlling government makes her a symbol for a generation to come.

I’m merely scratching the surface here, as there are many, many more plot lines and characters. The film deals with slavery, racial, sexual and personal identity, activism and the act of creating and receiving a story. The overwhelming enormity of this movie works for and against it, as it is undeniably an impressive achievement but, frankly, I didn’t like it and barely connected to anything in it.

It plays like a 3-hour, $100 million game of Spot the Movie Star, as all of the main cast members each play between four and eight different roles.

The make-up that transforms these famous faces is extraordinary, and audiences will love the end credits which, like Coming to America , shows how many times you may have watched an actor under pounds of makeup and not realized it.

Some of the actors are playing to their strengths, while others, like Grant,

are really showing us something new.

It’s hard to assess Hanks’ performance, as he plays at least two characters (the survivalist nomad and a 1970s scientist) beautifully. But his other roles, especially that of a mobster, a crazed doctor and a hotel caretaker, show him hamming it up. Hanks can be wonderful when he’s subtle and not pushing too hard. Here, he’s under the impression he can vanish into a character like Daniel Day Lewis or Peter Sellers. He can’t.

Some of the story threads grew on me, while others started strong but fizzled out. The editing sometimes cleverly ties the tales together by illustrating the connective threads of water, mounting tension or moments of personal declarations of freedom.

But while the film is full of existential musings and multiple meanings, the tales are tied together in a mostly loose, ethereal way, with a shared birthmark being the only real narrative glue. The Chinese Logan’s Run rip-off is the most engaging of the stories, if only because it gives viewers a break from the relentless

parade of stars hidden by make-up.

Considering that the film was directed by the Wachowski Siblings and Tom Tykwer, whose most famous films collectively are The Matrix Trilogy and Run Lola Run, the action scenes aren’t as impressive as you’d expect but it’s as pompous, over-produced, and pseudobrainy as those Matrix sequels. The best thing about it is how grandly ambitious it is. The worst: it sometimes feels like you’re watching seven bad movies at the same time, and, after the second hour, I was ready to go home.

This is destined for a cult following, since few will tolerate a film so overlong, hideously violent, ripe with racial stereotypes and speechifying but entirely under-developed characters. In melding The Red Violin, The Fountain and the Robin Williams drama Being Human, the result has much to say but is so full of itself, it doesn’t seem to even need an audience. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1619f
