I don’t buy the high muck-a-muck, mountaintop political model; I think the divide it creates is half of what needs fixing in DC today. So next time you see me sign-waving alone or with others on Maui’s highways or anywhere else along my way, please stop to talk, and please consider whether you want a Senator who wants and likes to keep in touch, personally.

In his [Apr. 26, 2012] Coconut Wireless, your editor expressed grave concern over a “once proud U.S. Congressman (yours truly) standing alone on a busy (Kihei) highway” sign-waving at dawn one morning last week.

Don’t cry for me, Pignataro! I was proud to serve as Maui’s Congressman (‘02-’07) and am proud to offer Maui my US Senate candidacy. But not too proud to get down and personal, to listen to your thoughts and ask for your vote one-on-one.

I’ve sign-waved both alone and with supporters throughout my career, when I was and wasn’t a Congressman. Some candidates and elected officials fear direct voter contact and must be surrounded at all times by a million busy handlers. But I’ve welcomed the unfiltered interaction that comes from personal sign-waving, canvassing, unscripted and uncensored talk stories and other activities.

My last Maui trip was a good example.

Over two days I sign-waved both alone and with supporters in Kihei and Olowalu and on Hana Highway (with folks stopping by to talk), did a Pau Hana with Ed in Wailuku and a Talk Story in Napili, walked the Kahului and Paia business districts and Maui Open Market, spoke at Rotary and Kiwanis meetings, taped an Akaku show, met with other Maui media, and talked with other Maui residents along my way. Folks got to size me up personally as their possible next Senator and I got to hear from them personally as well.

MORE SHELTER TALK

This is in response to a Letter to the Editor written by Kelli Uderitz and printed in the April 26 edition of the MauiTime. I need to clarify some misstatements made

by Kelli. Kelli stated that 9th Life Hawaii will not spay pregnant cats. True to a degree.

We will NOT sterilize an obviously pregnant cat, abort the babies and kill the babies.

We rely on the knowledgeable vets and vet techs to palpate and let us know if they feel babies and if so how large. Fertilized eggs the size of a fingernail are really not palpable and those females will be spayed because there would be no way to tell if the cat was pregnant by palpation. We do not incise open a female, see kittens and sew her up.

Our highly experienced vets are capable of telling a pregnant female by palpation and we rely on their knowledge. We do offer a maternity room where pregnant ferals can be held till they give birth. We then spay mom and either return her to her colony or keep her in one of our feral colonies at the sanctuary. Kittens are socialized and adopted out. Owned cats are returned to their owners for birthing. We will spay the mother (after about 7 weeks post-pregnancy) and will sterilize the kittens (when age appropriate) and help adopt them out.

Your second comment regarding the 135 kittens we fostered several years ago is that we only took healthy cats. We had a large foster network at that time. These foster parents had their own cats. We could not knowingly expose their cats to Upper Respiratory Infections or Ringworm. Those were the only cats we did not take and Dr. Kim did examine the kittens for these situations. However, we took in kittens with worms and dewormed them. We took in kittens with fleas and deflead. We took in some kittens that had motor problems.

You suggested we go down and take in all MHS’s overflow. We wish we could do just that. We neither have the manpower nor the millions that flow into Maui Humane Society’s coffers every year. So we do the best we can, with what we have. We have sterilized over 4,529 cats for the Maui community.

Roughly 30 percent of those were absolutely free to the cat owners/caretakers.

the most beautiful forests on Maui,” he said. “But the fun factor can work against us. We’re not out there shooting plants for the thrill of it.”

BEST JOB EVER

Think about it: you go up in a helicopter, fly over some of the most beautiful and remote forests on Maui, hover within 100 feet of the green, then pick up a paintball gun loaded with herbicide and start blasting away at invasive species.

For the last two years, Dr. James Leary of the University of Hawaii has done exactly that. He says he’s gone out on 10 or so “missions” to take out “high value targets”–so far, just miconia plants, highly invasive plants from Central and South America that can form an umbrella over watersheds and kill off native species. He says the best “platform” for the gun–what he refers to as “herbicide ballistic technology” (HBT)–is the helicopter.

“It allows real-time target elimination during surveillance operations,” Leary said, talking more like a Navy SEAL sniper than a scientist. “It’s effectively cut our helicopter time in half. This technology comes from Hawaii and it really is made for Hawaii. The EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] has reviewed it, but it only exists in Hawaii.”

The HBT is really quite simple: a paintball gun is loaded with herbicide instead of paint. Leary says his helicopter pilots (“some of the best in the world”) are so good they can hover over a cliff side or watershed within 100 feet of an invasive plant, which is within the gun’s effective range. Using the gun and helicopter allows Leary to “eliminate” the target plant without causing collateral damage to native plants growing nearby. Leary half-jokingly calls his missions “weedectomies.”

Military sniper talk aside, a remarkable three-minute gun-camera video Leary shared of a recent mission has all the hallmarks of old Vietnam war footage (minus the napalming of people, of course): emerald green jungle growth, the lazy spin of the helicopter blades’ shadows on the

ground, even the clack-clack-clack-clack of the gun. But through it all, Leary is clearly precise, laying down herbicide “bullets” on individual plants.

“I appreciate people’s concerns about herbicides,” Leary said. “We’re trying to be as discreet, surgical, as we can.”

So far Leary’s only been shooting at miconia, but he’s been working closely with the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC), training new shooters, if you will, and wants to take on pampas grass next.

“It’s great,” said Teya Penniman, MISC’s manager. “You can use it in areas that are otherwise hard to reach. Penniman added that her group put Leary’s technology on display for state officials as part of the Hawaii Invasive Species Committee‘s first ever neighbor island meeting on Maui on May 8, though she laughingly refused to say how the officials performed in the test firings.

As for Leary, he freely admitted that his job is a lot of fun, but it’s also still a lot of work.

During a week when I’ve got a screed against the County of Maui footing the bill for the Maui Visitors Bureau (see page 10), I thought it fascinating that the April 2012 issue of Outside magazine happened to land in my mailbox. Promoting its annual Travel Awards on the cover, the magazine goes on to list myriad destinations around world that offer wonders for adventurers and tourists alike. But those at the MVB probably don’t like the issue, because our own Valley Isle didn’t make the cut.

Best Islands? That honor went to the Seychelles, which offer “the illusion of a private kingdom,” “some of the greatest marine biodiversity on earth” and a hotel on a “secluded beach” with rooms as low as $88 a night.

Hawaii did make the cut with Best Beach, but only on Kauai (Mahaulepu Beach): “There are plenty of Hawaiian beaches well suited to sipping mai tais, surfing, and admiring a parade of imaginative swimwear,” Stephanie Pearson and Kate Siber wrote.

“Mahaulepu is not one of them.”

Turns out the folks at Outside would rather enjoy a beach flanked by ancient burial sites, endangered monk seals and a two-mile distance to the nearest resort than one fronting a paved beach path and shops selling Coach purses. Go figure.

ROCKY PATH UP HALAEAKALA

And now here’s some slightly good news for fans of the old Haleakala Trail, that ancient path leading from Makawao to the dormant volcano’s summit. Located on Haleakala Ranch land, the trail’s been closed for years. Then on May 11, the state Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) voted to allow “limited” public access to the trail, which is itself apparently owned by the State of Hawaii.

The key word here is “limited.” The board

Along the Haleakala trail approved the scheduling of at least two public hikes per year “on such dates and during such times as the [Haleakala Ranch] shall determine in coordination with [Department of Land and Natural Resources].”

If that seems, well, completely unsatisfactory, you’re not alone. “In essence, DLNR’s Request is asking BLNR to abdicate its statutory duties and violate its own rules, including asking BLNR to put the rights of HRC ahead of the public’s rights– something that has already been occurring for at least a decade,” said Tom Pierce, a Makawao-based attorney for Public Access Trails Hawaii (PATH), a group that wants a lot more than two hikes on the trail per year, in written comments to the BLNR. According to PATH, the trail is historic and still in existence. In fact, many of the old posts marking the trail are still pointing skyward.

“The trail has shown up on very good government survey maps since the 1880s,” states PATH in its comments to the BLNR. “The trail was dramatically improved at great cost by the Territory of Hawaii in 1905, at which time it was not only surveyed but also its position carefully established on the ground with rock cairns and finger posts, many of which remain fully visible on the ground today, as well as portions of the trail, which may be seen from indentations in the ground.”

The May 11 BLNR decision notwithstanding, PATH is continuing in its quest to open the trail completely. They’re currently suing the state and Haleakala Ranch, and say their case is scheduled to come up in January 2013.

“On Maui, the state is closing many more trails than it is opening,” PATH president David Brown said in a May 13 statement.

“This case is about requiring BLNR to follow its legislative mandate to protect public lands, and obtaining respect from private landowners who deny public access over clearly public trails.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

County Investigated Finance Director Danny Agsalog

For Allegedly ”Yelling and Swearing” in Office Deputy Director Jeremiah Savage now working out of Mayor’s office

ounty of Maui Finance Department Director Danilo “Danny” Agsalog was recently the subject of an investigation involving his conduct in the office, two individuals with knowledge of the investigation said this week.

County Communications Director Rod Antone confirmed on May 14 there was an investigation involving Agsalog, but said he couldn’t comment on specific allegations.

“It is done,” Antone said of the investigation. “It was concluded last week.”

An individual claiming to have considerable knowledge of the investigation first alerted MauiTime to the investiga- Finance Director tion. That individual and another counDanny Agsalog ty staffer with knowledge of the investigation said it involved Agsalog “yelling” and “swearing” at Jeremiah Savage, the Deputy Director of Finance, and pounding on a desk back in April.

“It was two guys not getting along,” one of the sources said. “Savage felt threatened.”

Antone said that because it was a personnel matter he would not comment on specific allegations. “The county is like any other workplace,” he said. “People say things they don’t mean sometimes, and sometimes these need to be investigated.”

Antone did confirm that, in a highly unusual move, Savage was moved out of the Department of Finance and into the Mayor’s Office itself. “As of right now, he’s still there,” Antone said on May 14.

Agsalog also would not comment on the matter. “It’s a personnel matter, and I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment,” he said on May 14. Savage didn’t return a phone call asking for comment.

When asked if the investigation would result in any corrective action, Antone said yes, though he would not elaborate on what action that might be, or what may happen to Agsalog.

“There were recommendations,” was all he would say.

One individual at the county with knowledge of the investigation did say that while the investigation didn’t conclude that the allegations reached the level of “harassment,” it did find that the yelling and desk pounding should not have occurred. “There will be some fallout,” the source said.

Both sources, who requested anonymity because they couldn’t publicly discuss personnel matters, said the Maui County Corporation Counsel’s office conducted the investigation. Antone would only say that it was carried out “by an unbiased third party, as is policy” and Corporation Counsel Patrick Wong didn’t return a phone call asking for comment.

Antone added that none of the allegations against Agsalog had anything to do with finance. “Bottom line, this is not affecting public service,” Antone said. He also wouldn’t say how many people complained against Agsalog in the first place, beyond that there were “not several complaints.”

Agsalog has significant previous public service dat-

ing back nearly a decade, though his resume is rather unique. After moving to Maui from the Philippines in 1979, he reportedly found work as a restaurant dishwasher and as a stock boy in a supermarket. After enlisting in the US Air Force and later the Air National Guard, he eventually got a job as loan fund manager for Maui Economic Opportunity’s Microenterprise Program, and later, as Budget Director during current Mayor Alan Arakawa’s first administration.

He held that job for two years, then in January 2005 took over as head of the county’s Civil Defense office. Though he told The Maui News at the time that the job was his “calling,” he held it for just two weeks before flying to Oahu to take over as then-Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann’s Emergency Services Department Director, which he held for a number of years. When Arakawa won reelection in 2010, he nominated Agsalog to be Finance Department Director.

Antone added that when Mayor Alan Arakawa first entered office in 2010, one of his first acts was to institute a “policy of professionalism. No matter your rank, he’s serious about that.”

That policy includes the following language: “[W]e must emphasize our commitment to conducting ourselves with the highest standards of professional conduct. As representatives of our administration and the county, we are all expected and required to conduct ourselves professionally both in and out of the office. MARGARET SANCHES WINS SENIOR SERVICE AWARD

Margaret “Peggy” Sanches was recently chosen as Hawaii’s Senior Hero, a dedicated volunteer who is utilizing her golden years to give back to the community. Home Instead Senior Care decided to recognize the hard work and impact that seniors make in their neighborhoods. The winner will receive $5,000 to give to a nonprofit of his or her choice. They received more than 1,500 entries through the US and Canada.

The average age of the nominees was 76 and the oldest was 106 years old.

As one of 50 state winners, Sanches, 68, earned a spot in the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame on the SalutetoSeniorService. com website, where her nomination story has been posted. As a state winner, Sanches is now considered for the national Salute to Senior Service award.

It was Sanches’ dedication to the senior-citizen volunteer mentor for Kupuna and Keiki Together, Giving Back’s Brain Gym Intergenerational Mentoring Program (IMP), that won the attention of the judges. Brain Gym IMP pairs senior citizens trained in educational kinesiology with school children in need of special help with school work. The pairs work together on Brain Gym exercises during weekly sessions over the course of the school year.

In her role as a mentor at IMP, Sanches works with three children. Through her assistance, her children have experienced significant increases in interpersonal strengths and reading skills, decreases in problem behaviors and hyperactivity and improvement in self-esteem.

“Margaret is a valued member of the community and a senior hero to many,” said President and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Huber of Home Instead, Inc. “She has shown that volunteer opportunities for older adults should not diminish because of age. Seniors such as Margaret

The campaign was launched with First Friday on May 4 with Alexis Dascoulias, executive director of Maui Onstage, as the first sleeping beauty to hit the pillow in the window. “Nobody could believe I was real,” said Dascoulias. “They kept knocking on the window.”

STROLLER STRIDES!

Cailin Goodier and Tracy Ruggiero have opened a new fitness business aimed at moms. It’s called Stroller Strides of Maui.

The franchise is one of the largest growing fitness businesses in the nation and is recognized by Entrepreneur magazine. It operates more than 1,200 locations in the US. GENTLEMEN, START YOUR STEREOS Sophisticated automobile technology makes highperformance engines purr in relative silence, but automakers fear that their most demanding drivers are emotionally attached to the engines’ roar.

Consequently, as Car and Driver reported in April, the 2012 BMW M5, with 560 horsepower tempered with sound deadeners, has installed prerecorded engine noise, channeled into the car’s cabin via the stereo system. A computer program matches the amplitude of the engine’s growl to the driver’s accelerator-revving. In other automobile tech news, Peugeot technicians announced in March that they were preparing “mood paint” for the body of the company’s iconic RCZ model.

The paint’s molecular structure would be alterable by heat sensors in the steering wheel and elsewhere that measure a driver’s stress levels. A calm driver might see his car turn green, for instance, but watch out for road-rage red!

THE CONTINUING CRISIS With only 30,000 hotel rooms in Rio de Janeiro, and 50,000 visitors expected for the June United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, officials persuaded owners of many of the city’s “love hotels” (typically renting for four hours at a time) to change business plans for a few days to accommodate the delegates. A BBC News stringer reported that the hotels will remove some special fixtures and furniture, such as “erotic chairs” and velvet wall coverings, but that the large, round beds would stay. Fortunately, the conference does not begin until June 13. The night of June 12 (“Lovers Day”) is a big incomeproducer for short-stay hotels.

NO RESPECT The Marine Wounded Warriors Battalion at Camp Lejeune, N.C., generally enjoys excellent support from the community, but in an April report of the Government Accountability Office, marines complained of a “petting zoo” environment in which civilian charities and advertisers use the battalion to seek out poster faces and bodies that “looked the part” of wounded veterans, such as those severely burned or missing limbs. Warriors who suffer post-traumatic stress or brain injuries often appear outwardly “normal” and are likely to be ignored by the support organizations, thus setting a “bad tone” among the wounded.

OH DEAR! At a March Chicago Symphony Orchestra performance, the music continued uninterrupted as two patrons engaged in a fistfight over box seating. Conductor Riccardo Muti “never stopped conducting,” said a patron. “He very gracefully, without missing a beat–literally–he brought (the second movement) to a very quiet and subdued close.” And it costs $8,500 (plus $3,000 annual dues) to join the ultra-prestigious New York Athletic Club, which counts Olympic champions among its upper-crust members. However, an April brawl in a back room, said to have begun over a woman, saw (according to witnesses) fighting “wolf packs” in a “lion’s pit” that resulted in several bloody injuries, with two people sent to the hospital and three arrested.

Some villagers in China’s Shandong Province who are too poor or isolated to hook up to home heating fuel service have an alternative, according to a March report by China News Center. A Better Reason to De-Fund Planned Parenthood: The organization has survived a controversial de-funding campaign over its limited abortion program, but its Washington state chapter, Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest, began a quixotic safe-sex campaign in February in which thousands of condoms were distributed with scannable barcodes. The plan was that users would automatically register information about their locations during sex, and, if the users chose, other information about the particular sexual experience they just had. Among the choices: “Ahmaz-ing,” “Rainbows exploded and mountains trembled,” “Things can only improve from here.”

At the 10th Arab Shooting Championships in Kuwait in March, as medals were presented and winners’ national anthems were played, officials were apparently ill-prepared for medalist Maria Dmitrienko of Kazakhstan. Consequently, her “national anthem” was, inadvertently, the humorous ditty from the movie Borat. (Instead of such lyrics as “sky of golden sun” and “legend of courage,” the audience heard “Greatest country in the world / All other countries are run by little girls” and “Filtration system a marvel to behold / It removes 80 percent of human solid waste.”)

Robert Strank, 39, was arrested in Beavercreek, Ohio, in April and charged with trying to rob the Huntington Bank. According to police, he had approached the bank’s counter but become ill and asked a teller to call 911 to summon medics. There were conflicting news reports about when medics arrived to treat Strank, but there was agreement that Strank recovered and subsequently presented the same teller his pre-written holdup note demanding cash. This year, Terryl Vencl wants the County to give the Maui Visitors Bureau

$3.5 million

Here’s why the County Council should finally tell her no.

T

he story goes that Terryl Vencl spends a lot of time at Maui County Council budget hearings. Supposedly, she’s there every day, during the spring months when the council painstakingly reviews its proposed budget, which is hovering between $550 million and $560 million. It makes sense, because Vencl, the executive director of the Maui Visitors Bureau (MVB), has a lot riding on the outcome of the seemingly endless budget meetings. About 3.5 million reasons, to be exact.

Since about 1991, the MVB–which promotes Maui as a visitor destination through advertising, marketing and “press blitzes,” which are junkets in which travel journalists get paid to fly out to Maui, stay in five-star resorts and then go home and write great things about the island–has received taxpayer money from the

County of Maui (and the State of Hawaii, but I’ll get to that later).

It started out as a modest grant of $150,000, but has in recent years ballooned to $3.5 million. The State of Hawaii also gives the organization roughly the same sum each year.

Whether she’s spending time at county council meetings or not, Vencl, who since 2003 has run the bureau (they’re currently headquartered in a Wailuku office park near the post office), is well paid for her work. She collects a bit more than $134,000 in salary and benefits, according to the MVB’s 2010 federal tax returns. Interestingly, tax records from 2009 and 2010 show that number stays pretty steady, regardless of whether the county gave the organization $3.6 million (as they did in 2009) or $1.9 million (during the hard times of 2010).

Anyway, it’s county budget time again–fiscal year 2013– and once again Vencl’s been spotted listening attentively at

the hearings. I called her to talk about the money the MVB takes from the county every year, and the controversy it’s weathered in recent years, but Vencl refused to comment.

“I don’t comment in the midst of budget talks, and it’s still going on,” she told me. “I’d be happy to sit down with you after it’s over.”

Of course, it’s really hard to criticize anything associated with the visitor industry on Maui when newspaper headlines (like the one in The Maui News on May 10) say things like “Economist says state’s growth led by tourism.” The flying of tourists from all over the world to Maui has, for at least the last 50 years, been the backbone of the county’s economy. There’s often been talk of building up the county’s tech or agribusiness economy, but that remains talk: today, the visitor industry accounts for about 40 percent of Maui County jobs.

Nonetheless, a couple Fridays ago, resident Buck Joiner drove to the county’s Kalama o Maui building in Wailuku, headed up to the eighth floor, filled out one of those little public comment cards and then did exactly that–criticize one of the most powerful players in the county’s visitor industry. For three minutes at the beginning of the May 4 Maui County Council Budget Committee hearing, Joiner railed against the Maui Visitors Bureau, a non-profit organization.

“I’m here today to ask for fairness and honesty,” Joiner said, calling attention not only to the organization’s request for $3.5 million from the County of Maui, but also to it receiving an equal from the State of Hawaii. “That’s not a Buck Joiner small amount. Yet they come to you and say they want more.”

Though the MVB is a private organization, it’s nearly completely funded by the county and state. this well because he used to sit on that committee, which he called a sobering experience.

“We got 70-some applications,” he said. “We went through them with a fine-toothed comb. It was really grueling. Some of these people were just skin and bones. The total requests were for $3 million, but we only had $1 million to give. The only thing we could guarantee was that everyone would be disappointed.”

Running the MVB grant through a committee like that, which would hold regular public hearings, would add a layer of “accountability” to the MVB funds. But there’s a better solution: simply cut off the funds entirely, and let the visitor industry itself fund the Maui Visitors Bureau.

There’s plenty of precedent for this. In fact, before Vencl took over the MVB, she was executive director of the Maui Hotel Association (MHA), a trade group that lobbies on behalf of Maui’s big hotels and resorts (it’s also located in the same Wailuku office park as the MVB).

According to the 2010 MHA tax returns, the group took in nearly $240,000, not a penny of which came from the government. There was $193,854 from membership dues and another $44,625 from fundraising.

Granted, those numbers are much lower than the $3.5 million ponied by the county, but given the gravity of the county’s budget situation, I’m sure the many hotels, resorts, restaurants and activities that make Maui County’s visitor industry–buttressed by what they continually tell us are ever-rising numbers of tourists and ever greater monthly visitor spending totals–can pass the hat for the greater good. $ 770,000 Of course, there’s also the nearly $3 $ 125,000 million that Maui gets from the Hawaii $ 28,000 Tourism Authority this year. As far as what the money is going $ 3,500,000 towards, the HTA only published a vague list back in January of “community and cultural events” the organization has supported: Whale Day, the Maui Marathon, Lahaina Plantation Days, Wailuku First Friday, stuff like that. But exactly what that support entails isn’t made public.

In any case, the Maui County Council as a whole will take up the proposed budget on Friday, May 24. They have until June 10 to pass a fiscal year 2013 budget. Past years have shown the council to be very friendly to Vencl’s requests, but maybe the best we can hope for is that she’ll finally decide to talk to us about her plans for the taxpayer’s money. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + apignataro

Their coffee selection has changed, too. “We replaced the medium roast Sumatra with 100 percent Maui grown coffee,” said Childers. “It’s been an adjustment for those who loved the Sumatra, but it’s a good change. We have Hana Bay coffee. It’s grown in Kula–the yellow caturra or the red catuai.”

They’ve also had to put on aprons and get baking. A couple of months ago, Cake Bakery–which had been supplying their baked muffins, scones and sweets–gave them two weeks notice that they would end that service.

Papaya Turkey Salad During a recent visit, I watched a plate holding their papaya turkey salad come out of the kitchen. Goring fussed over the placement of cilantro and garnishes. “Jackie is the food stylist, and the mastermind of our recipes,” said Childers. “She is quality control around here. Muffins have to look as good as they taste.” Clearly listening to us, Goring just smiled as she adjusted a plate of pastries.

Their teamwork has paid off. The cafe has become a hub on Market. Its hours Monday through Friday are now 7am to 5pm, and 8am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. Oh, and if you bring your own coffee cup, you get 25 cents off your coffee.

They also hold monthly art exhibits with 15 percent of the proceeds going to local charities. This month, it’s Arts for Education Children’s Group. The Wailuku Coffee Company ohana also got together and created an eclectic collection of paintings for their “Ohana Art Show" that you can see on the walls of the cafe during May. “We have lots of things about to blow up in our second year,” they told me. Dinner shows, food education stunts, events, art and more menu expansions and changes in June. “We want to help build that foundation that helps people reclaim their food and keep it sustainable here. Best Of Maui Awards Ballot It’s that time again Time to cast your votes for our annual BEST OF MAUI. Usually, this ballot is decked out with whatever theme we’ve chosen. But this year, we’ve come up with another theme so cool, we want to keep it under wraps. Seriously, you’re gonna really dig it.

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center and Maui Brewing Co. welcomes 32 breweries from Hawai‘i, California, Oregon, Colorado, Michigan and Delaware to the 4th Annual Maui Brewers Festival on Saturday, May 19 in Yokouchi Pavilion/A&B Amphitheater.

Brewmasters and their teams will share their beer artistry and industry knowledge with our community and supporters during this craft beer showcase.

The Maui Brewers Festival provides a good opportunity to try beers that can’t be found in Hawai‘i and sample new products from familiar breweries.

In addition to sampling and savoring up to 68 handcrafted brews, be sure to get your fill of ‘ono grinds and decadent desserts fresh from the kitchens of 20 Maui restaurants and caterers. Maui Brewing Co. specialty root beer and

filtered water are also on-hand. If you’re a designated driver, feel free to imbibe as many soft drinks and island food as you can handle. If you’re a beer enthusiast, feel free to ask questions and learn more about the colorful, flavorful beers from our brewers and brewery representatives.

In between eating, drinking and networking, you can take a break at our Social Media Corner and share your day in photos or text with friends and followers. Maui’s popular live bands will be performing on the pavilion stage for your dancing pleasure.

Maui Brewers Festival is a fundraiser with proceeds benefiting MACC’s arts, cultural and educational programs for the Maui County community.

MACC in the Community So what about the MACC? Maui Arts & Cultural Center is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization governed by a volunteer board of directors and supported by the generosity of people who love Maui. The Center is the most comprehensive multi-disciplinary arts facility in Hawai‘i. When it opened in 1994, it represented the culmination of a long standing dream for the Maui community: The Center is a gathering place where people can celebrate creativity in personal and shared experiences of the arts; It’s a world-class facility where popular and innovative performing artists can be enjoyed, connecting our community to the world; It’s an educational resource, serving all ages from pre-school to adult, enhancing arts education in schools and professional development for teachers; It’s an exhibit space for visual artists from Hawai‘i, North America and beyond; It’s a 12-acre complex offering dance studio, meeting room and function spaces for the community-at-large.

In addition to big name concerts held in A&B Amphitheater and Castle Theater, the MACC presents a full spectrum of arts season programming with performances in classical music, ballet and modern dance, theater, spoken word, storytelling, hula drama and Hawaiian music, to name a few.

MACC is committed to bringing forth the

depth and breadth of Hawaiian culture as seen by its native people. Our season offerings represent the highest caliber of contemporary artistic accomplishments that spring from the rich cultural traditions of the past. They include films that express passionate views of our homeland; performances that bring to life the oral histories maintained in chants and lore, and the many facets of hula in Hawai‘i today as well as visual art expressions by Native Hawaiians.

The Schaefer International Gallery is our 4,000-square foot exhibition space for visual arts. Throughout the year, the gallery presents seven major exhibits which showcase the work of artists from Hawai‘i, North America and other countries. Gallery exhibits celebrate the broad spectrum of human experience by presenting a broad view of cultures, places and people, and reflect important issues and ideas of our time. The gallery supports artists in their exploration of new and innovative work. One thing is a constant: admission to Schaefer International Gallery exhibits is free.

MACC celebrates 17 years as a Partner in Education with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. What this means for Maui is arts education programs and 21st century learning skills provided by the MACC for students and teachers. In any given school year, teachers come to the MACC for professional development workshops, students get field trips to The Center to learn through art, drama and dance in CanDo! Days, and visiting artists give spe-

cial performances for Maui’s schools.

The Center’s Artists in the Community program redefines the relationship of artist to audience, is recognized as a national model and embodies our belief in the ability of the arts to build a community. Through dozens of free events each year, MACC brings performing artists into schools, senior centers and social service agencies, which reach an average of 8,000 people all over Maui County, including the remote town of Hāna and neighboring islands of Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i. Through shared experiences, Maui Nui residents can enjoy the transformative power of the arts and visiting artists can feel the pull of aloha from our community.

As part of our commitment to community enrichment through the arts, MACC offers its venues to student orchestras to gain performance stage experience. We partner with the Maui Pops Orchestra in hosting three seasonal concerts, and with the organizers of Nā Mele O Maui to present Maui County’s longest-running student competition that pays tribute to the Hawaiian culture in music, language and art. The County of Maui also partners with MACC to host free events for the community-at-large, including Starry Night Cinema family film screenings and ArT=Mixx, a mixer for young adults that features art, music, dancing and networking. The Center honors the music of Hawai‘i’s culture with its free events, Kī Hō‘alu Guitar Festival and Maui ‘Ukulele Festival every year.

Tom Dalldorf

T

om Dalldorf joins us today from Nevada City, California. He’s a beer writer and publisher of Celebrator Beer News, the oldest and most respected beer journal covering craft beer in the United States.

A beer and wine industry professional for over 30 years, Tom opened the Vintage Cellar Wine Bar & Café in California in 1979. He has judged wine at the national level and taught Wine Appreciation classes for the University of California, Berkeley Extension.

When Tom bought the fledgling California Celebrator beer newspaper in 1990, he restructured it and grew it to a national magazine with international coverage.

These days, Dalldorf travels to many cities in the U.S. covering the good beer movement, writing, taking pictures and meeting the movers and shakers of the industry, including the brewmasters here at Maui Brewers Festival. He has journeyed to England, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Thailand visiting their breweries and writing about beer cultures.

The Pursuit of Brew Happiness with Homebrew Maui

H

omebrew Maui is the island’s club of homebrew enthusiasts. Led by Thor McCammon, the Brew Maui group hosts a Homebrew Contest each year as part of Maui Brewers Festival. Judging of contest entries takes place on Friday, May 18th and winners are announced during the festival on Saturday. Homebrewers can enter in either beer, mead or cider categories in a variety of styles and with special ingredients.

The Brew Maui homebrew club is registered and listed with the American Home Brewers Association. Members share a passion for quality craft beer. They enjoy the art of brewing, the nuts and bolts of brewing and, of course, the fruits of their labors.

ia is a multilingual singer and songwriter who has graced Maui stages since 2001. Her musical style ranges from reggae to hip-hop, funk and Reggaeton and her vocal style has been described as a mix between Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill.

Lia has an energetic stage presence and is known for her exciting live shows.

Born in Panama City, Lia grew up surrounded by a melting pot of musical styles, including the samba music of her mother’s native Brazil. Her father was conductor of the Panama National Symphonic Orchestra and Choir Musica Viva, and she would often participate in some of his concerts. At age 14, Lia moved to Maui. After graduating high school, she joined the singing group Shuga. They performed all over the island and released an urban/pop EP. After the group split, Lia made the scene as a solo artist and recorded a promotional album, Breaking Sonido. She performed throughout Los Angeles, and continues to expand as an artist and songwriter. Lia arranges and produces all of her own music, and is now collaborating with Maui band The Kryptones to record her new album and perform live. Her first single, “On A One Way,” was released in 2011 and her second single, “Day By Day,” has just been released.

ailing from a family of popular Hawaiian entertainers such as his father, Alika Sr., and his uncles Jesse Nako‘oka and Willie “Smiley” Nako‘oka, Alika is a contemporary Hawaiian singer/songwriter with more than 20 years of entertaining experience. He has had a string of best-selling albums, including a top hit, “54 Bridges to Hana Town.” Alika’s most recent album is

Promise Me This, for which he received a Hawai‘i Music Award for Best Contemporary Album in 2010. He will be releasing a new album in July.

Alika was born on Maui and raised on the songs of Cecilio & Kapono, The Brothers Cazimero, Kapena and, of course, his Uncle Jesse. He began singing at a young age, performing at various events with his family throughout the Hawaiian Islands and Pacific Northwest. As an adult, Alika performed at venues in Los Angeles, Seattle and Las Vegas. This year, Alika has put together a band to entertain Maui residents and visitors and spread the aloha.

he Eazy, led by M.C. Anthony Simmons, performs original and heavy island rock music with an ‘ukulele sound. The band’s music speaks of heartbreaks and happiness, of conflict and consensus.

Their songs feature relentless jungle drums, funky bass lines and exotic guitar noodlings. Band members include Thomas Arnold on vocals and ‘ukulele, Daisy “Wednesday” Finch on bass, Dave Pszyk on guitar, Stephanie Pszyk on backup vocals and Rick Bodinus on drums. THURSDAY, MAY 17 PLIGHT OF THE HAWAIIAN MONK SEAL – With a few mysterious deaths of Hawaiian monk seals on Molokai still unsolved, the fate of these huge and gentle creatures seems darker than ever. “Today, Hawaiian monk seals are endangered and, although many protection efforts are in place, their numbers are believed to have fallen more than ten percent per year since 1989,” says National Geographic. Here’s a chance for you to hear the latest monk seal news from Hawaii Wildlife Fund biologist Hannah Bernard, NOAA Monk Seal Response Team member Nicole Davis and Monk Seal Foundation member Pat Wardell. MISS REARDON – For their last play of the spring season, Maui ProArts has chosen “And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little,” a dramatic comedy written in the late 1960s

by Paul Zindel. The play involves three sisters (played by Sarah Loney, Kristi Scott and Martha Siefkin) who suddenly find themselves free after their domineering mother passes away. When a meddling neighbor couple (Lisa Teichner and Andy Howansky) suddenly appears at their Staten Island home, all of the sisters’ secrets and resentments burst forth. The play (suitable for an adult audience) is directed by Mark Collmer, produced by Jonathan Lehman and runs Thursdays-Sundays through June 3. $20, $15 for students and seniors. 7:30pm. SATURDAY, MAY 19 BREWFEST – The amazing Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s annual fundraiser has more than 65 craft brews this year from more than 30 breweries across the country. What to Expect When You’re Expecting

Don’t expect greatness from this comedy about pregnancy

oody Allen once took the nonfiction bestseller Everything You’ve Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Was Afraid to Ask and turned it into a wildly popular and hilariously funny comedy that mocked human sexuality. Now, someone has taken the no-nonsense pregnancy guidebook What To Expect When You’re Expecting and tried to do the same thing. Mark my words: someday, someone will make a romantic comedy out of The Pidgin English Dictionary.

A children’s book author (Elizabeth Banks), a photographer (Jennifer Lopez), a food service worker (Anna Kendrick) and a reality TV celebrity (Cameron Diaz) find themselves pregnant and as out of their element and unprepared as the men in their lives. While the women make preparations for the next nine months, we discover that the men have a secret club, led by

Chris Rock, where they stroll through the park together and share secrets of fatherhood. While the subplot about the “judgment-free dude’s club” gets the most laughs, it’s one of the many overly cartoonish sequences that clash with the more serious moments scattered throughout.

While thoroughly a comedy, it trivializes and romanticizes motherhood (one character talks about seeking a motherly “glow”) but also wants to comment on matters like unwanted pregnancy, miscarriages, adoption and unwelcome bodily functions with a straight face. While nowhere near as bad as the trailer would expect you to believe and slightly better than I expected, this is still a mild, passably diverting farce.

The format of multiple actors sharing the running time brings to mind the recent stink bomb Valentine’s Day. This is, mercifully, a better movie but shares the same problem of cramming too many actors into a single two-hour movie, having the editor frantically cut back and forth, not giving them enough time to fully develop their roles.

I kept forgetting that Diaz and Kendrick were in the movie but was surprised how strong Dennis Quaid, Brooklyn Decker, Banks and, playing her husband, Ben Falcone (who is excellent) are and wished the movie was only about them. Lopez is so likable and laid back,

Star studded cast you’ll forget her status as a pop diva celebrity, and Rock has many of the film’s funniest lines.

It’s worth noting that the movie survives its dreadful opening scene, in which Diaz vomits into a trophy. It’s also worth mentioning that the film has a golf cart chase sequence, Banks farting and wetting herself in the same scene, lots of Delta Airlines product placements, and multiple birth sequences with actresses staring at the camera and screaming for laughs.

The dialog is sometimes very funny (Rock declares “our babysitter charges us for overtime... and steals our s--t!”) and sometimes awful (someone else declares “here come the va-jay-jays!”). Considering the material, Falcone and Banks give really impressive performances but everyone else deserves and has done much better before.

It’s frustrating to see how close the film gets to probing tough areas but then pulls back, relying on broad comedy and sentiment to soften some complex topics that arise. Similar to He’s Just Not That Into You, the overload of dueling tones, subplots and attractive actors just stack up into the equivalent of cinematic gridlock.

The movie works overtime to be trendy, with several scenes offering a recreation of banal reality TV shows, but only occasionally taps into the universal feelings of fear and joy in taking on parenthood and adult responsibility.

It’s amusing and easy to take, the way an inflight movie kills some time before vanishing from the mind hours later. ■
