Something tells me this isn’t the last we’re going to hear about this, if for no other reason than the fact that ILWU Local 142 Division Clerk Joycelyn Victorino is married to Maui County Councilman Mike Victorino, who also happens to be the most prominent possible opponent for Arakawa in the 2014 mayoral election.

MAUI NEWS SHRINKS A BIT MORE

We live in a time when newspapers get smaller. There are many reasons for this– the rise of the Internet, increasing sophistication of computers, and so on–but it is a fact of life in the world of news media.

And it looks like The Maui News isn’t protected from that reality. According to stories that ran in the paper’s Sunday edition, Editor in Chief David Hoff is retiring, effective May 18, Entertainment/Features Editor Rick Chatenever is retiring, effective May 8 and News Editor Lee Imada will become Managing Editor, a post that hasn’t existed since 1991.

For a paper the size of the News, that’s a lot of change that would have dire implications, but I’m not so sure. First of all, Chatenever will apparently continue to write his “Making the Scene” column that runs on Thursdays. And Hoff, though the paper’s top editing boss since 1992, was always something of a mystery to me. In fact, until the Sunday article announcing his retirement, I’d never before laid eyes on the man. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

FOUR SEASONS MAUI STAFF PLANTS TREES ON KAHOOLAWE

In a Hawaiian protocol ceremony led by Kumu Kealii Taua a few days after Earth Day, executives from the Four Seasons Maui planted an Iliahi (sandalwood) tree on their property to signify their commitment to the environment. It was part of their successful year-old worldwide campaign called 10 Million Trees. The Fours Seasons Maui has also – in cooperation with the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC)–used the campaign to support tree planting on Kahoolawe.

In November and December of 2011, teams of Four Seasons employees traveled to Kahoolawe where they nurtured more than 2,000 iliahi, koa’ia, ‘a’ali’i, kamanomano, ulei and aweo weo plants.

“The people of Hawaii are to be stewards of this effort and many of you planted the trees,” said Ka’onohi Lee of the KIRC to the Four Seasons employees. “Kahoolawe is part of the ahupua’a of [the] Four Seasons. Mahalo for supporting the island of Kahoolawe.

The island will flourish once again.”

Assistant Director of Engineering and Grounds & Landscaping Manager Kevin Gavagan spearheaded the effort and also planted over 200 trees on the resort’s Maui

property. The iliahi, which was once overharvested almost to its demise, will serve as a poignant reminder.

“The tree represents to me environmental and cultural change,” said Gavagan. “But it also symbolizes renaissance and rebirth— the current widespread efforts for revitalization of the land, language and culture.”

The iliahi is planted conspicuously in front of Ferraro’s at the base of the grand staircase. There’s a plaque explaining its significance next to it. At the dedication, regional vice president Thomas Steinhauer spoke about the 10 Million Trees campaign.

“It is so nice to see all of us come together in this intimate setting and celebrate this corporate effort that equals us embracing our culture,” he said. “Taking the efforts of almost 100 hotels and thinking about all of the different trees planted, like the jackfruit in Shanghai, we wanted to show our own commitment with reforestation of Kahoolawe. The trees are a symbolic gesture and a reminder so we can spread the word.

With the blow of a conch and a beautiful chant, Kumu Kealii Taua began with a few words about planting. “Our people were very simple and they had just one phrase for planting, hana hou, hana hou, hana hou,” he said. The ceremony ended with a kanikapila

At the blessing, Mayor Alan Arakawa emphasized being careful of the growing grass and other developing vegetation because the landscaping isn’t pau and they don’t want it damaged. But the county and parties involved were cool enough to understand that the public was more than ready to use the park, so they opened it without having completed the landscaping. So be careful! The park is a use-at-your-own-risk kind of place.

Kids under 10 need parental supervision.

The concrete park was designed by Gridline Skateparks, an industry leader that’s already built more than 100 skateparks around the world.

This Saturday, Donovan McNab, the owner of the Lahaina Skate Company, is organizing a Grand Opening with several sponsors–one that kids can attend without ditching school.

In April, a research ship will begin surveying the Atlantic Ocean floor off of Nova Scotia as the first step to building, by 2013, a $300 million private fiber-optic line connecting New York and London financial markets to speed up current transmission times–by about five milliseconds. But that (according to an April report in Bloomberg Business Week) will enable the small group of firms underwriting the project to earn millions of dollars per transaction by having their trade sales arrive before their competitors’ sales.

Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, the most celebrated plastic surgeon in the country, apparently earned enough money from well-off clients that he can now “give back,” by funding and inspiring more than 200 clinics to provide low-income women with enhancement procedures (face-lifts, tummy tucks, butt lifts) at a reduced, and sometimes no, charge. A local anthropology professor told ABC News, for a March dispatch, that “[in] Brazil, plastic surgery is now seen as something of the norm.”

The jets are necessary, the Crouches’ lawyer told the Los Angeles Times, because the Crouches receive more death threats than even the president of the United States. Allegedly, the Crouches keep millions of dollars in cash on hand, but according to their lawyer, that is merely out of obedience to the biblical principle of “ow[ing] no man anything.”

Here’s why one Maui biologist worries that the massive urban development proposed for Olowalu will hurt one of the most unique coral reefs in Hawaii.

auline Fiene calls them micro-atolls. They’re tiny rings of coral just a couple feet in diameter that grow right up to the shore. During low tide, they pierce the surface like their giant cousins in the western Pacific.

She’s found them just a few yards offshore at Olowalu, and nowhere else in Hawaii.

“People probably think there’s coral all around Maui, but really, there are just slivers of coral around the island,” said Fiene, a biologist who’s spent the last 25 years on Maui. “The most unique is at Olowalu. The coastline from Camp Olowalu going north used to be solid kiawe. Having that kiawe cooled the water and protected the coastline. Now it’s gone.”

There’s a lot more than just ripped out kiawe that worries Fiene about the Olowalu reef. On April 23, the public comment period officially closed for the 1,000-plus page Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed Olowalu Town, which is currently under consid-

eration by the state Land Use Commission (LUC).

ing, Fiene has spent the last few years thinking about how that much construction will affect the Olowalu reef. Her fear is that runoff, especially during storms, will significantly damage the reef.

“Fertilizer can get washed down,” she told me. “Silt is an issue. When that silt gets suspended, it reduces the amount of sunlight the coral receives. Over and over, that reduces the ability of the coral to grow and be healthy.”

On April 21, Fiene sent a threepage comment on the Olowalu DEIS to the LUC staff. Based in great part on conversations and research she’s shared with fellow biologist Cory Pittman, Fiene’s comment letter succinctly and eloquently describes the dangers Olowalu Town poses to the coral reef. It’s a part of the public record, but we’re reprinting here (with some minor changes in formatting and grammar) because potential damage to Olowalu coral hasn’t received much publicity (to download a PDF of the Olowalu DEIS, visit tinyurl.com/6opf5ah).

Aloha Land Use Commission Members and Staff: I am writing to provide comments on the DEIS for the Olowalu Town Project.

I am a diver and biologist with over 8,000 dives in Maui waters since 1987. I mainly study a group of shell-less mollusks called Opisthobranchs, but I also have broad interests in coral reef ecology.

My comments are in regard to Appendix D– The Assessment of Marine Water Chemistry and Biotic Community Structure in the Vicinity of the Olowalu Town Master Plan.

The study surveyors spent just four days surveying an area of over 450 acres. The study correctly characterizes the sediment problem on the Olowalu reefs, but fails to correctly assess the species composition, caliber and uniqueness of the reef itself. This is understandable given the extreme minimum of time spent there surveying. As a result, this study downplays this reef’s diversity and one-of-kind status, its value and importance to Maui, and its place in the entire state.

The study notes that the offshore reef at Olowalu is unusual in that it is an actively accreting aggregate reef. This is true, but it fails to say just how unusual. I’ve attached a map made by NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science in 2007.

The dark red areas with purple lines are living aggregate coral reef structure. This is not coral colonies growing on lava; this is high structure, coral skeleton that has been growing for hundreds of years, five to 40 feet thick. Coral reef provides many more places for reef fish and other animals to live than do isolated colonies of coral growing on rock. It is a complicated network of channels that is home to millions of other animals.

The first thing that jumps out from this map is just how little living aggregate coral reef we have on Maui, compared to how much coastline there is.

I don’t think most people realize what a precious and limited natural feature this is. The second striking thing is just how close the Olowalu reef is to shore and to human impacts.

As you can see on this map, extensive areas containing living aggregate coral reef are limited to only THREE areas on the whole island.

There are some narrow bands along the west side but they are not extensive. Of these three, only TWO. Kihei and Olowalu, have over 50-90 percent live coral coverage and only ONE of those grows very close to the shoreline. Kihei’s reef is offshore in 50-80 feet of water, a relatively safe distance from land pollutants, but also inaccessible to anyone without a boat/kayak. The single extensive aggregate coral reef on the whole island with over 50-90 percent live coral coverage that grows in accessible water is the Olowalu reef. That makes it unique, not unusual.

The study found a total of 12 species of corals, but there are actually twice that many. Expert marine invertebrate biologist, Cory Pittman, who has studied the Olowalu reef for the past 34 years, has recorded 24 species of corals (personal communication).

This area is home to several species of rare corals and it also has the highest diversity of Porites species and growth forms in the entire island chain, with three particularly rare species (P. duerdeni, P. solida, P. cf. annae). Dr. Zac Forsman of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology told me that “one of the most amazing things about the site is that Cory was able to find nearly every species of rare coral in Hawaii at this one site!”

The study noted the coral micro-atolls on the inner reef flat, but it failed to correctly identify the three species (not one) of corals growing as micro-atolls, and there is no mention of this area’s unique status in the state of Hawaii. There are a few individual micro-atolls in Kaneohe Bay, some in NWHI lagoons, and some off Lahaina, but Olowalu has by far the best-developed, most extensive microatoll area in all the islands. To me, this area is literally an outdoor museum of rare coral species and growth forms.

The study notes some large (“up to several meters”) Porites lobata colonies offshore but it didn’t note that one colony is over 23 feet (7 meters) in

Although the surveyors spent only four days on site it was obvious enough to them to note several times throughout their report that sediment was the major factor affecting this reef.

“In the case of Olowalu, the predominant controlling factor appears to be effects from sediment, originating both from terrestrial runoff and resuspension of naturally occurring marine sediment (note that the lack of wave energy may also result in less removal of sediment from coral surfaces than in areas of higher water velocity). Sediment is the main stressor in this area due to limited water circulation.”

If this area were designated urban and if construction were allowed to occur upslope, does anyone believe the proposed project “will not have any significant negative effects” on this reef as claimed? Especially with the “limited water circulation” referenced in the study.

It is stated that grading and drainage improvements will meet or exceed County standards, but County standards haven’t proven effective at preventing degradation of reefs in the past. We all know from the many developments built in our lifetime that major deposits of soil have occurred no matter what “mitigations” the developers plan.

Chocolate brown water has poured into the ocean during construction of the Grand Wailea, Four Seasons, Makena Landing properties, the Maui Ocean Center, North Kihei, the new Kapalua Hotel, etc. And these developments were on relatively level ground! Once in the ocean this dirt doesn’t just go away. It gets resuspended every time there is even small surf in the area, blocking sunlight critical to coral growth. There is no doubt in my mind that the same would occur with a project the size of Olowalu, especially considering the much greater slope of the land here.

In addition, the small amount of lowlying, relatively level land at Olowalu, which in the past has functioned as a partial run-off filtration area during storm events, is, in the proposed master plan, covered with residences and impervious surfaces–as well as a wastewater treatment facility?

Why would we take this chance?

There is simply no compelling reason for a major development here. It doesn’t even fit most of the criteria for urban designation, being that it is so isolated from services and other developments. I am baffled why urbanization is even being considered.

We don’t get to decide where our special natural places are on Maui. Nature decides that.

All we can decide is where our development is going to be. And if there were a reef on the whole island that cries out for respite and exemption from urban development above it, it would be Olowalu. It has developed over centuries and there is literally nothing to replace it.

The study makes mention of “numerous small black-tip reef sharks” but doesn’t say that this area has been a nursery area for them for decades and that it is one of the few in the entire state.

Pregnant females know to come specifically to this area generation after generation to give birth due to its calm, shallow, protected water.

Johnny B’s brings great burgers, fish and shakes to Paia

They mostly feature burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes but they’ve been dabbling with fish tacos and other dishes, so check the specials. They also offer a pulled pork sandwich and veggie burger. The Learys said they were influenced by the Five Guys burger chain that’s incredibly popular from Maine to Florida.

The Learys took a lot of time to plan their burgers, from the Komoda bakery buns to the local Kula onions and tomatoes, and the Big Island Cattle beef that makes up their hand-pounded patty. You

aia has a new little burger joint. It’s located at the south end of town, and it’s called Johnny B’s. The renovation of the spot was so well done that I couldn’t remember exactly how that old building looked, but it was one of those places that had been a yoga studio, head shop, clothing store and surf shop (most recently, it was a Thai restaurant). Now Johnny B’s is breathing new life into the space with great local food.

Owners Tom and Pam Leary took over the property a few Big Island years ago with the idea of creating a wedding destination. After Cattle Burger quickly figuring out that building and planning their dream wedding business would take a while, they opened Johnny B’s. After two years of renovating and permitting, they opened on Jan. 26. can taste the aloha in every bite. Komoda’s buns are great for Sitting under their canopy ceiling with the breeze blowing, their sandwiches, you order your fillings any way you like, with Johnny B’s architecture fits right in with Paia’s informal North as many toppings as you like. I was partial to the fish burger, Shore vibe. The restaurant is casual; there’s a walk-up order fresh caught by local fisherman Jeff Johnson.

“We asked Komodas if we could get our buns from them,” says Pam. “They said no. I wouldn’t give up. It took two months but they did say yes.”

Tom showed me the gorgeous, just-caught Mahi that goes into the fish burgers and tacos. It’s lightly seasoned and grilled, then dressed to order. Their cholesterol-free fries are hand-cut Burbank russet potatoes fried in peanut oil (they’re so good I admit to eating two orders). The shakes are also big sellers, and are made with Roselani Ice Cream.

“We wanted to keep with the vision of Paia and the architecture,” says Tom. “We use everything local. Even the Maui Volcano spice on the volcano fries is made here. We wanted to create a place locals will love.”

Tom and Pam are at Johnny B’s everyday. In a town Fresh Mahi Mahi notorious for non-existent parking, it’s nice to know served here you can park your car right at the restaurant. ■

Cinco de Drinko On Maui

E

xactly 48 days from St. Patty’s day we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, a day Wikipedia calls a “celebration of Mexican heritage and pride” in America. I don’t know if it’s the deep ocean separating us from the source of the holiday, but we have pretty much watered down the holiday into just tacos and tequila. So grab your Corona and don your sombrero because Cinco falls on a Saturday this year. That means we have license really go south of the border.

Do it right by starting with a big breakfast. We’re thinking huevos rancheros from Fred’s Cantina in Kihei or Pinata’s in Kahului. You’ll need a good base before you hit up all the margarita specials, and there are few better ways than huevos rancheros. And when it comes time for a shot of tequila, summon the courage to stray from Patron and try something different like Corralejo, Cazedores or Peligroso.

Amigos is serving up Mexican specials on food and drinks all day long at their Kahului, Kihei and Lahaina locations. The Maui Onion Festival is having a bartender competition for best Cinco de Mayo drink starting at 2:30pm on Center Stage.

Belly up after that at one of Kaanapali’s finest bars: Leilani’s, Hula Grill or Cane & Taro. Oh, and Spanky’s Riptide starts their taco bar and drink specials at 11am. Not on the Westside? Enjoy a leisurely lunch and Milagro’s in Paia. There you can sip some of the best Anejo tequilas found Maui.

After you have spent your afternoon with Mexican beers and margies, recharge with a quick siesta and get back on your horse. It’s time to get wild. Fred’s Cantina will have the Gringo Mariachis spicing up sounds. Taco Bar at Ocean’s opens at 4pm with GoGo Dancers and rad electronic giveaways at 9pm. Diamonds has $3 and $4 Mexi beers all night.

FreeRadicals Projekt will be at Mulligan’s with DJ Boomshot at 9pm. And there’s a fiesta at the Triangle with Shaun Kamakazi at Three’s, DJ Decka at Ambrosia and Happy Cinco at Dog & Duck.

Shake your tail feathers at Charley’s in Paia’s with their Brazilian Cinco De Mayo Tribal House Carnival, Latin beats, shakers, whistles horns and percussionists. In Makawao, Dr. Nat and Rio Ritmo teams up with Kit Kat Cabaret to give Cinco the burlesque treatment.

Back on the Westside, Longhi’s celebrates hairy lips with DJ Ills Mustache Party, artists in action and drink specials.

ONION FEST – Maui’s triumphant reign over the best damn onion in the world is celebrated at the 23rd Annual Maui Onion Festival in Ka‘anapali this Saturday, May 5. Of course, we began celebrating our revered sweet white globe way before agri-tourism turned into big business. Now the festival, in its 23rd year, boasts an elite chef competition for best onion recipe, a Ka‘anapali chef cook-off, a keiki and adult onion eating contest and food booths. You can bet the most ono onion rings will be there, too. There’s also live music by the Air Force Band of the Pacific, Benoit JazzWorks and the Barefoot Minded. Festivities begin with an early-morning Polynesian Hula Dance at 10am. Kaanapali bartenders will also compete at the Cinco de Mayo Mix Drink Contest at 2:30pm.

DON BARNHART’S HYPNOTIC COMEDY – Funny guy Don Barnhart is back on Maui to get audiences rolling with his hypnosis comedy show. Barnhart zeroes in on talents hidden in the audiences’ subconscious mind. Skeptics are always welcome, no joke: “There are no gimmicks, no pills and no magic tools,” says Barnhart of his technique. Barnhart even has his own iPhone app. He wants to help you unclog your subconscious mind, but also get a few laughs (he also offers a one-hour hypnosis seminar on Sat., May 5 at 1pm). That’s according to Mauka, an artist and writer who sells his colorfully painted coconuts at the Maui Tropical Plantation Maui Market on Mondays. This open air market has artisan Maui items, some local veggie stands, local coconut candy, tiki carving, carved wood art, jewelry and tropical island wear. It’s like a swap meet, but on a smaller scale (though the lawn is huge!). Who knows how big this could get.

Their Maui Cattle Co. hand-patted cheeseburger with the works–sold for a mere $4–was worth the trip alone, but they also offer Vietnamese crepes that are off the hook. KIPAHULU COMMUNITY MEETING – When most tourists, and even residents, hear the name Kipahulu, they probably think of Charles Lindbergh’s grave and the Pipiwai hiking trail that leads to the 400-foot Waimoku falls. But the Kipahulu District of the Haleakala National Park is a massive area, encompassing “both the easily-accessed coastal section and the highly restricted, biologically precious and pristine upper slope reserve that is closed to all but limited research access,” according to the National Park Service. Now here’s a chance for you to learn more about the park, from actual park staff. Free.

LONGHI’S GETS THE BLUES – Blues rock sensation Popa Chubby will launch his three-island Hawaii tour with three shows on Maui beginning with Longhi’s Wednesday, Charley’s Thursday and Iao Theatre in Wailuku on Friday. His blues guitar licks are mind-blowing, and he says his affinity for the blues all began with a jukebox in a candy store back in the Bronx in the 1970s. Summer 2012 Movie Preview

The sun is out and the thermometer is constantly in the upper 80’s. The tourists are showing up in droves, pumping up the economy and, in the words of Bu‘la‘ia, not forgetting to go home. The biggest, most fun and second busiest movie season (next to Christmas) is about to start and there’s not one Transformer, Smurf or Ryan Reynolds flick in sight.

The 10 titles below stand out for the talent involved, how much anticipation they’ve accumulated over the course of the year and by how much fun they look. Of course, keep in mind that eight of the 10 are sequels, prequels, reboots or remakes of old board games, proving once again that Hollywood only rarely risks producing “original” stories:

THE AVENGERS (May 4) Comic Book Saga, stars Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man and Mark Ruffalo as The Incredible Hulk.

Why It Could Rock: Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans are in the cast, but this is Downey Jr.’s show. Even if it’s a mess, who doesn’t wanna see Ruffalo Hulk out, or watch Scarlett Johansson kick butt or see Samuel L. Jackson talk smack?

Unless: It’s the most long awaited, hugely anticipated comic book movie since The Dark Knight, so it’s bound to disappoint.

DARK SHADOWS (May 11)

Tim Burton’s adaptation of the vampire soap opera stars Johnny Depp as bloodsucker Barnabas Collins

Why It Could Rock: If anyone can take a campy, dusty afternoon horror series and make it startlingly different and appealingly weird, it’s Burton and his game-for-anything wingman Depp.

Unless: It’s as tired and predictably kooky as their successful but empty Alice in Wonderland.

BATTLESHIP (May 18)

The board game is now a lavish sci-fi adventure starring Liam Neeson.

Why It Could Rock: Actor-turned director Peter Berg made The Rundown, Friday Night Lights and The Kingdom, so he knows how to make a solid popcorn movie, even if the idea itself is awesomely dumb.

Unless: The trailer had audiences groaning and laughing in disbelief.

MEN IN BLACK III (May 25)

Here come the MiB’s, again. Stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as Agents J and K. Why It Could Rock: Josh Brolin’s casting as a younger Jones is exactly what the movie needs and the sort of fresh touch that eluded the first sequel. Most of the original talent is back and expect the Fresh Prince to turbocharge the soundtrack.

Unless: Audiences remember Smith’s performance in Seven Pounds, or that the last MiB movie was 10 years ago and no one asked for a third.

ROCK OF AGES (June 1)

Musical starring Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Malin Ackerman

Why It Could Rock: Reportedly, Cruise doing Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” DOES rock.

This is the kind of all-American musical where the audience already knows and loves every song on the soundtrack.

Unless: Glee fatigue and the feeling that this is like an all-star karaoke session sink it faster than you can sing “Bye-bye-bye!”

PROMETHEUS (June 8)

Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic stars Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Patrick Wilson Why It Could Rock: Who doesn’t want to see Scott return to the world of Alien? The cast, which includes Idris Elba and Guy Pearce, is top notch and so is the production and f/x. What The Avengers is for comic book fans, this prequel is to sci-fi fanboys.

Unless: Like The Avengers, it can’t possibly meet expectations.

BRAVE (June 22)

The new animated fantasy from the geniuses at Pixar.

Why It Could Rock: It’s an original story (their first since Up). The trailer is intriguing and promising and the studio is gearing for a big comeback.

Unless: Last summer’s Cars 2 proved that not every Pixar film is a classic so that audiences decide to just stay home and watch Wall-E again.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (July 3)

A reboot, with Andrew Garfield (The Social

Network) playing Peter Parker in high school.

Why It Could Rock: Garfield is a fine actor and the rest of the cast (including Emma Stone and Martin Sheen) exudes confidence.

Unless: The younger spin on the story plays like Twilight with web shooters.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (July 20)

Christian Bale is back for the 3rd Christopher Nolan-directed Batman thriller.

Why It Could Rock: A cast of acting heavyweights playing iconic characters (Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon) in the closing chapter of Nolan’s trilogy. Even without Heath Ledger, this has can’t-miss written all over it.

Unless: After months of seeing Tony Stark, Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Spider-Man, audiences are just sick of these movies.

TOTAL RECALL (Aug. 3)

Colin Farrell, Jessica Biehl, Ethan Hawke and Kate Beckinsale star in this sci-fi remake.

Why It Could Rock: Reportedly more a faithful adaptation of the original source (Philip K. Dick’s short story, “We Can Remember it For You Wholesale”) than a retelling of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic. The director, Lew Wiseman, helmed by the better-thanexpected Live Free or Die Hard and the early footage looks exciting.

Unless: Like last summer’s Fright Night, Farrell once again stars in an inferior remake. ■
