IS OSHER A COMMISSIONER OR A REPORTER? It’s always sad when a firefighter dies, especially when he dies on duty. Maui Fire Department Firefighter III Duane Ibarra, 50, died just after 6pm on Wednesday, Jan. 18, according to a county statement sent out late the next day. The cause of death remains unknown at press time.

Within minutes of the county release going out, Wendy Osher of Maui Now had a brief write-up on Ibarra. Her story came straight from the news release, with one small addition, which came after a quote about county officials offering their condolences: “Friends and co-workers expressed similar sentiment upon learning of Ibarra’s passing.”

Osher didn’t have to go far to confirm that, because she herself was one of Ibarra’s colleagues. Since 2007, Osher has been a county Fire and Public Safety Commissioner. According to the commission’s website, Osher and her eight colleagues “review the operations of the Department of Fire and Public Safety and the Civil Defense Agency [and] make recommendations for changes which may be desirable to improve performance of emergency functions and the provision of public safety services.”

They also investigate public complaints against Fire Department personnel.

Osher didn’t disclose her position with the Fire Commission in her Jan. 19 story on Ibarra, and to my knowledge has never made such a disclosure on Maui Now. Osher also reacted with some hostility when I asked her back in 2007 how she could ethically juggle an official county position with her journalistic responsibilities. She denied that anything she was doing was unethical and insisted that my concern was no big deal because on a small island like Maui “conflicts perceived or otherwise are bound to occur.”

The problem is that journalism is an absolute. A person is a journalist–an outsider in society, free of entanglements and official ties–or a person isn’t. There is no straddling of the roles. Most people would think it laugh-

able if a newspaper employed the city’s mayor to report on city council hearings, but where Maui County’s fire department is concerned, that’s exactly what Maui Now has done.

In any case, Osher’s term of office at the Fire and Public Safety Commission ends on the last day of March.

BASICALLY, WE’RE SCREWED It’s easy to say that public safety on Maui is a quaint matter, and that when you get to the federal level, the people in Washington really know what they’re doing and how to protect us, but even that is probably a wild overstatement.

The other day I was perusing the many safety brochures in the lobby of the Kalana O Maui building–the county’s main hall of administration–and found “Preparing Makes Sense. Get Ready Now,” a little foldout put together by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

On the subject of protecting ourselves from biological or chemical attack, the ge-

niuses at Homeland Security offered this bit of wisdom: “Some potential terrorist attacks could send tiny microscopic ‘junk’ into the air,” states the brochure. “Many of these materials can only hurt you if they get into your body, so think about creating a barrier between yourself and any contamination...

Also, including duct tape and heavyweight garbage bags or plastic sheeting that can be used to seal windows and doors if you need to create a barrier between yourself and any potential contamination outside.”

“Junk?” Could Homeland Security be any more condescending?

Also, if you remember clear back to February 2003, our-then brand new Homeland Security department first made the asinine duct tape recommendation, which led to a run on duct tape at Home Depot, innumerable “Duct and Cover” jokes and, in Israel, three people suffocating in their home.

Most of us had thought the Fed dispensed with the duct tape nonsense–as though mere tape could stop a small pox virus–but apparently we were naive and foolish.

LEGALIZE HEMP RESEARCH! Ramoda Anand, a local activist who crusades for stuff like public access for disabled people and loosening up county Liquor Control rules prohibiting dancing in clubs is adding legalizing industrial hemp research to his list of things to get done. With the help of state Representatives Joe Souki (D-Wailuku), Cynthia Thielen (R-Kailua), Barbara Marumoto (R-Waialae) and Jerry Chang (D-South Hilo), Anand is pushing for passage of HB 1727, which would “allow privately funded industrial hemp research to be conducted in Hawaii under certain conditions,” according to the bill text.

“It would be the first in the country to say in the act that it has to be organic and non GMO,” Ramoda Anand emailed me this week. “The other acts in California do not say this. That’s why it would be incredible, in my opinion. It has to be on more than two acres of land, as well.”

The bill text states that hemp has often found its way into “paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction and fuel.”

As everyone who’s watched Dazed and Confused knows, George Washington grew hemp (though historians say he probably didn't smoke cannabis), but the federal government’s Drug War over the last few decades has pushed hemp into the shadows.

This bill hopes to drag hemp back into the light, which scientists tell us provides lifegiving nourishment to plants.

Get it? Plants need light? Come on–can't a guy crack a little photosynthesis joke?

Anyway, there’s no hearing scheduled for HB 1727. And unless one is scheduled by Feb. 7, the bill dies.

REWAILUKU WANTS YOU! In a perfect world our communities would all make a part of the whole. Wailuku is one step closer to ideal with their reWAILUKU plan that kicked off Jan. 23 and runs through February.

The Maui Redevelopment Agency, the county Department of Planning and the Wailuku Community Association are partnering with a venue at 1980 Main Street in Wailuku Town. The idea is that citizens can come by this storefront and view current plans and the history of Wailuku while sharing their ideas for change.

The movement has been sparked by the overwhelming success of Wailuku First Friday. “First Friday brings together a diversity of culture, age, entertainment and community awareness,” said Richard Priest, the president of the Wailuku Community Association.

“As with any process, the momentum of this event is informing the Maui populace that Wailuku is a destination to visit and enjoy. We are excited to explore, investigate and share the momentum of Wailuku through the upcoming Public Design Workshop events.”

The objective of reWAILUKU is to provide a clear direction to build and sustain Wailuku Town through private investment,

PACIFIC WHALE FOUNDATION GETS GREEN AWARD The Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) has been honing their green practices skill for 32 years, but on a mainstream level for businesses it’s a relatively new thing. Workboat Magazine and its website workboat.com is a resource for commercial marine professionals and recognizes these marine businesses doing the right thing at their annual Environmental Awards. This year Pacific Whale Foundation received the Judges Special Recognition Award for Comprehensive Environmental Management.

Workboat noted that Pacific Whale Foundation’s tours educate more than 300,000 guests about marine conservation each year. All profits support research, education and conservation programs to protect the ocean environment. Programs supported include marine science field trips and lab programs for school children, cetacean research, and Volunteering on Vacation,

which links visitors with environmental service opportunities.

They also felt the Pacific Whale Foundation’s multifaceted Green Practices Program was especially significant. It’s a pro-gram that works to: 1) reduce energy usage and the carbon footprint of Pacific Whale Foundation’s ocean eco-tours; 2) model

ANTI-THEFT ID BREAKTHROUGH For people who become stressed when asked to prove their identities by biometric scans of fingerprints, hand prints or eyeballs, Japan’s Advanced Institute of Industrial Technology has developed a chair frame that authenticates merely by sitting down: a butt-scanner. Professor Shigeomi Koshimizu’s device produces a map of the user’s unique derriere shape, featuring 256 degrees of pressure at 360 different points and could be used not only to protect vehicles from theft but also, when connected to a computer, to prevent log-ons by those with unauthorized posteriors.

IMMINENT GAY TAKEOVERS Mayor Jose Benitez of Huarmey, Peru (population 16,000), speaking at the opening of a water works in November, warned residents about strontium in the water, which he said suppresses male hormones. He reminded residents that nearby Tabalosos, which is lately popular with gays and lesbians, shares the water supply and that Huarmey could turn gay, too. And a November report by Muslim scholars at Saudi Arabia’s highest religious council (Majlis al-Ifta’ al-A’ala), presented to the Saudi legislature, warned that ending the ban on females’ driving would cause a surge in prostitution, pornography, divorce and, of course, homosexuality (and the scholars added that, within 10 years, the country would have “no more virgins”).

COMPELLING EXPLANATION California state legislator Mary Hayashi of Hayward pleaded guilty in January to misdemeanor shoplifting. Police said she had walked out of a Neiman Marcus store in October with more than $2,400 worth of unpaid-for merchandise, caused, said her lawyer, by a benign brain tumor that might have affected her decisionmaking. Miraculously, and just in time for the legislative session, the tumor, said the lawyer, is “no longer affecting her concentration or her judgment.”

AWESOME IRONY! Retired sheriff Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. was arrested in November in a suburb of Denver and charged with distributing methamphetamine to men in exchange for sex. Sullivan, who had a distinguished career as Arapahoe County sheriff, was booked into the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Center, named for him after he retired in 2002.

MORE AWESOME IRONY! Eldon Alexander, 36, and Ms. Korin Vanhouten, 47, had two different encounters with Ogden, Utah, police on Dec. 15. First, they were issued misdemeanor citations after being accused of shoplifting at a WinCo Foods store. They were released and walked out to their car in the parking lot, but summoned the

police when they discovered that while they were busy shoplifting, someone had broken into their car and stolen a stereo. (The shoplifted items were worth about $25, the stereo about $60.)

OUR LITIGIOUS SOCIETY Jesse Dimmick filed a lawsuit in Topeka, Kan., in October against Jared and Lindsay Rowley– whom he has been convicted of kidnapping in a notorious 2009 episode that resulted in his being shot by police. Dimmick broke into the home and held the couple hostage at knifepoint, but now says that, during the siege, the couple made him an “oral contract,” “legally binding,” that they would help him hide if he would sometime later pay them an unspecified amount of money. According to the lawsuit, since Dimmick was subsequently shot (accidentally, said the Topeka police), his injuries were the result of the Rowleys breaching the contract to hide him safely. Police, who had surrounded the home, arrested Dimmick when he fell asleep.

I’m not sure whether to call the cops or the humane society because it sounds like you’re killing cats with that thing. Do you have any idea how far the sound from that thing travels? Miles! That’s why I’m guessing you don’t do this anywhere near your own neighborhood because everyone would hate you and throw rocks and garbage at you. ON THE JOB HAZARDS Former 11-year-veteran police officer Louise McGarva, 35, filed a lawsuit recently, asking the equivalent of about $760,000, against the Lothian and Borders Police in Edinburgh, Scotland, for causing her post-traumatic stress disorder. Officer McGarva was attending a supposedly routine riot training session that got out of hand. She said she discovered that she had developed a debilitating fear of sirens and police cars.

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US A recent article in the Journal of Sexual Medicine reported the painful results obtained by three Hispanic men incarcerated in the southwestern United States who had, for some reason, inserted specially designed chips, carved from dominoes, under the skin of their penises, apparently based on a folkloric belief that “sexual performance and virility” would be enhanced. Infections resulted, requiring “major” surgery that was unspecified in the article.

NO INDIVIDUAL MANDATE To meet its municipal budget, the town of South Fulton, Tenn., assessed each residence $75 a year for firefighting service, but in the name of “liberty” gave people the chance to opt out of coverage. Vicky Bell chose not to pay, and when her home caught fire in December, firefighters rushed to the scene–but only to be on hand in case the fire spread to her neighbors, who had paid their fees. Bell’s home burned to the ground as firefighters watched. How Coconut Will Sustain You, Inside And Out

C

oconut has long been the giving tree of ancient Polynesia, but it also thrived around the globe between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, prevalent in early Indonesia, Malaysia and India as well. Today in the West we know it as a superfood. But in the old days the coconut provided strong fibers, cups, bowls, utensils, musical instruments, hula implements, tools, weapons and material for housing. It was also prized for its healing qualities and for the way it sustained our bodies inside and out.

Coconut meat comes in its own storage container, and delivers 7.2 grams of fiber in just one cup of freshly grated meat. Milk made from the meat is similar to mother’s milk in pH and is also high in laurie acid. Coconut water, found in the green coconut, is similar in pH to your own body composition, comes out of the shell sterile and is full of digestible minerals. It’s also alkalizing and contains electrolytes. You can purchase it packaged, and it’s used as a sports drink. It can even be injected as fluids and glucose into the body during medical emergencies.

Cold-pressed virgin coconut oil may be even more amazing. Almost 50 percent laurie acid, this oil can be anointed to hair and skin with potent anti-viral and antibacterial properties. It also moisturizes the body. The oil and milk are made up of short and medium chain fatty acids, and the body absorbs it easily, meaning it’s not stored like animal fats made of long chain triglycerides.

and Emily Kunz say they crack open tons of fresh coconuts everyday to harvest the fresh coconut water and meat their customers love in their foods. They also have coconut kefir, and use coconut milk in smoothies. You can find fresh coconuts at the Maui Swap Meet on Saturdays and sometimes independent vendors on the beach offer them as a healthy treat.

But one of the most astonishing coconut properties is its ability to flush toxins from the body. A new treatment at Spa Grande at the Grand Wailea features the healing and detoxifying nature of coconut in a two and a half hour treatment called the Royal Niu (coconut in Hawaiian) that falls under the coconut bliss category.

First, dry brushing the skin with a coconut husk and a coconut scrub will stimulate lymphatic drainage. At first it felt kind of scratchy, but the rhythmic motion of the flicking fiber quickly became relaxing. Exfoliation sheds dead skin cells and promotes cell and collagen renewal, increases blood flow to the skin and lessens the appearance of cellulite. After the scrub you are wrapped in a coconut butter body cocoon while your scalp and feet are massaged.

Once your lymphatic drainage gets stimulated, the detox is on. I immediately felt thirsty and was glad for a short break, and then it was time to soak in coconut milk. The bath is full of iron, calcium, phosphorous and amino acids–and is served with a tasty snack of coconut candy and coconut water. The skin absorbs these glorious minerals and smells incredible.

After a 25-minute soak and snack, it’s time for more coconut therapy. Smooth coconut shells and husks will be the

implements of massage with pure locally sourced coconut oil on the skin. These tools create a stimulating massage that relaxes the body and muscle tissue.

I was concerned the round tools would be too soft and would not go deep enough, but the firm shells proved me wrong. The massage and pressure made my muscles feel supple and my skin soft and smooth. Coconut oil can reverse signs of aging, relieve inflammation and heal sundamaged skin. I had to drink tons of water for the rest of the day to keep up with the detox, but felt incredible. You can really feel the toxins flushing, but it’s not overwhelming.

“Grand Wailea is actually built on the land of an ancient village named Niukauila,” Stephanie Handley, assistant spa director at Spa Grande, told me. “Which roughly translates to ‘important ceremonies consecrating the altar of the coconut.’ We wanted to pay tribute to the history of the area and probably the most useful tree in the world.

Strong, resilient and flexible, the coconut tree can provide our most basic need for life, including water.

The spa actually features eight different treatments that include and incorporate coconut from the manicure and pedicure to the couples treatments and cocoons. The benefits of consuming coconut and the lessons from ancient times are testament to the modern applications of coconut, a nut we have yet to fully crack.

Orthohealing Offers Joint And Ligament Pain Relief

M

y diagnosis of arthritis kinda came as a blow this year, a testament to older age. What’s worse, when I asked my general practitioner for alternatives to over-the-counter pain meds, or specific foods that I could avoid that might alleviate pain, he had nothing.

While arthritis is a bummer, it’s not the end of the world.

I learned recently at the Orthohealing Center in Wailuku that modern technology does have some tricks for pain sufferers where ligaments, joints and orthopedic medicine are concerned. The main drawback is that big pharmaceuticals don’t stand to make money, and insurance companies have yet to get on board.

One easy entry point into an alternative therapy are Intelliskin products. Designed by Dr. Tim Brown, an Association of Surfing Professionals Tour chiropractor, they work on your posture while you are active, like running, working out at the gym, surfing or even just sitting in front of the computer. These products help you better support your frame. Intelliskin is made from a lycra-like material with stiffened supporting panels along the back.

“It produces an extension postural correction of the shoulders, elevating and extending them, placing the shoulder joint in an optimal position for lifting and rotating, and to maintain the correction one pulls down on the bottom of the back of the shirt to reset the tension when needed,” says Orthohealing’s Dr. Charles Soma. “It feels supportive and compresses your torso, is worn underneath a looser more absorbent shirt for modesty or appearance and is completely washable, no special care required.”

Soma says he wears his surfing, working out and sometimes just under his clothes. The men’s versions come in tank, crew and v-neck, and women’s options are v-neck and

a sports bra.

I tried the women’s bra out and thought it would be perfect for working out. It fits snugly and makes your shoulders want to go back and pull your back straight. I actually felt more pops and cracks in my back with the constant adjustment as I sat in front of the computer. The downside is that it’s warm, but for a sports bra it’s super-supportive, and if it can help me avoid injury and pain with better posture, then I’m all for it.

Common injuries like tennis elbow, heel pain, hamstring tears, tendinitis, and arthritis can also be helped by Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP). Here your blood is drawn, processed and then reinjected into you in the problem area, creating a slew of biochemical reactions that heal the injury.

It costs about $750 for one injection and $950 for up to three sites. While pricey, this can be less than the cost of a typical outpatient surgical operation, and it takes less recovery time.

“People have heard of alternative treatments in the sports media, like when Hines Ward of the Steelers had PRP before a Super Bowl outstanding performance a few years back, and they want to get better faster, too,” says Soma. “Every company says they support wellness initiatives but none have yet embraced PRP. For example, without what is termed ‘unbiased clinical study’ to support it, despite the innumerable testimonials of patients and physicians alike, patients must pay out of pocket for the entire charge, except the office visit charge, which is covered in all cases by insurance.”

Soma says the changes in the medical payment system threaten to destroy private practice of medicine in America, especially solo specialty practices like his. By providing cutting edge treatment to people more efficiently than

traditional systems at the larger groups, he hopes “to stay relevant in the future care of people on Maui who are interested in an accurate orthopedic diagnosis, effective non surgical or non invasive care delivered by someone with experience, physical skill and capability to provide excellent outcomes from surgical treatment, and the judgment to tell which is indicated.”

riving out to Haiku to workout, I paused to look at the old to-go coffee cups and empty Pop Tart wrappers in my car. Though I strive for a healthy lifestyle, bad habits creep back in like roaches.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m heading to Upcountry Fitness to work out and ďŹ gure out more healthy ďŹ tness habits that I can incorporate into my schedule. An hour later Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m doing an airlifted back-bend, balancing over the feet of my union yoga instructor, Brian Shoen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the customers that drive what we do here,â&#x20AC;? says Meaghan Spitler, partner and manager at Upcountry Fitness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The classes on our schedule are customized to what they are requesting.â&#x20AC;?

The gymâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s union yoga, a branch of partner yoga developed by Jeff Von Schmauder, is also unique. The yoga has applications similar to acroyoga developed with a very Maui feelâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;the names of the arm holds and poses are all in Hawaiian.

makai (foundation person in the pose) to the mauka (the person ďŹ&#x201A;oating on top), my muscle groups were worked like never before. The class energizes and stretches hard to access muscle groups.

According to Spitler, the gym added on the classroom in July, 2010. Last year they also added the keiki ďŹ t zone, which includes a four-story kid maze jungle gym. This has become extremely popular, giving moms a chance to work out, and now the gym has made it available for nonmembers to bring their kids and play. The gym is also building a new and improved classroom that should be done

by March.

Isaak Tyrrell, general manager and partner, designed the gymâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fuzion Fit course, which features cross training on machines in a class environment. There are two stations of cardio and two stations of strength training. These have taken off and become so popular the concept has branched off into several classes that just focus on certain parts of the body. With 18 Fusion Fit options through the week, this is one of the most popular offerings in the classroom environment.

The gym has recently hosted a group of water sports athletes who love the gymâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world-class training and Upcountry feel. Advanced machines like the Power Plates provide accelerated training techniques because they work so many muscle ďŹ bers at one time. Kombucha: The Drink That Keeps On Living

K

ombucha is an unusual drink. The look, the taste – basically, everything about it is odd. But it’s also supposed to be incredibly healthy. Not sure what to think, I took a casual poll of the office.

“I tried ‘the booger drink’ from these hard core hippies,” Art Director Scrappers told me. “They pulled a bowl out from under the kitchen sink with a giant mushroom on top.

Why did I try it? I was peer-pressured into it.”

Associate Editor Anu Yagi also tried the drink, and recalled days in Haiku with raw food chefs feeding her this mysterious health elixir as if it were ambrosia. As for the rest of the staff, it was, “No way, Jose, we’re not trying that stuff.”

My first trip into bootch territory occurred in 1994. I was in college and working as a PA. My boss brewed it in the photography studio and swore that it had great health potential. I didn’t care much about health in my 20’s but I was certainly game to try the odd looking drink. Honestly, I didn’t think much of it – it wasn’t tasty, but also not terrible.

Now its popularity seems to have spiked. I see bottled kombucha in health food stores island wide. There’s the Maui Kombucha Cafe in Haiku, limited availability at Choice and Maui Booch on the Westside.

So what makes this elixir so popular?

First of all, the “mushroom” is not really a mushroom.

growing on a mixture of tea and sugar. The fermentation process process takes around three weeks and can be made with either black or green tea.

Fermented beverages and foods with live cultures, like kefir, pickled and cultured veggies that are not pasteurized are known for their health properties. These foods boost the immune system by increasing antibodies, the flora in in living cultured foods aid digestion (probiotics), they have antioxidants, enzymes, lactic acid, amino acids and are alkalizing to the body.

Bryan Willard knows all about kombucha. He’s the guy behind Maui Booch. Willard bottles his own kombucha and adds his own special blends of organic fresh juices.

“You wouldn’t believe my biggest challenge is finding bottles!”he told me.

But he does, and the resulting beverage is delicious and in demand. Willard brews 50 gallons at a time and makes deliveries and sells at the Launiopoko Farmers Markets on Saturdays, 8am to 12pm.

I asked Willard how he got into making Kombucha.

“By trying just about every vitamin and supplement there is,” he says. “And there’s one thing I have been consuming for a few years that has kept up my energy levels, kept my skin clear, and at the same time, I haven’t been sick in years! I highly believe in Kombucha’s healing properties. I mostly use a green tea base for my Kombucha,

Alternative Laser Therapies Are Becoming More Prominent On Maui

L

aser therapies have been gaining recognition in the medical field steadily and are now becoming increasingly popular on Maui. The most common therapies are laser hair removal and facial rejuvenation. Anti-aging and Sweat Ablation laser therapies are becoming more prominent as well.

Laser hair removal provides patients with permanent hair reduction. That means 75 to 95 percent of the hairs never surface again, once patients complete all appointments. Most areas of the body where patients desire laser hair removal need between eight to 10 treatments.

Significant developments have been made in recent years in laser technology and now all skin types can be serviced here on Maui. But while all skin colors can be serviced, only hair that is brown or black will respond positively to treatment. Laser treatment can’t, as yet, remove blond, gray and red hairs.

Preparation for the procedures is relatively simple.

Doctors ask clients to shave the desired removal site prior to the appointment. The most common area for laser hair

removal on Maui is the bikini line, but nearly any area of the body can be treated.

In fact, spas on the island are seeing more men come in for laser hair removal on their backs and chests. The pain factor for laser hair removal is relatively low and the cost can be quite affordable, when the procedures are bought in packages.

Then there’s facial rejuvenation, which uses lasers to heat up the pulmonary system and water under the selected area to trick the skin into using its natural wound repairing ability. This non-ablative process can improve redness, pore size, rosacea and reduce the size of lines, sun spots and wrinkles.

The highlight of non-ablative facial rejuvenation is that it does not damage the epi-dermal or dermal layers of the skin. Also, facial rejuvenation requires no anesthesia and no down time for the patient, making it known as the “lunch time face lift.”

Facial rejuvenation sessions usually run between $100 and $400 per procedure. It takes five sessions to see con-

siderable cumulative results and a client can have all the necessary sessions completed within two to four weeks.

One of the newest laser therapies to hit the island is Laser Sweat Ablation for Axillary Hyperhidrosis or, excessive underarm sweat. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia in just 30 minutes. This allows the patient to drive themselves home afterward.

The results have been described as “life changing” by recipients of the procedure, who can now wear any type of clothing they desire to social gatherings without the worry of odor, sweat stains or clothing discoloration.

While the costs of laser therapies can be on the higher side, it’s good to remember that the results of any of these procedures are generally permanent. The heartfelt card is signed â&#x20AC;&#x153;In Service with Love.â&#x20AC;? Your ďŹ rst thoughts ďŹ&#x201A;y to where in your wardrobe youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll entomb this homely poly/ cotton creature. But you reluctantly don it anywayâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;only to discover itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the best-ďŹ tting, most comfortable sweater youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever had the pleasure of pulling over your head.

I thought of that analogy while reading The Power to Heal Yourself, a new self-help book by Mauiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own Dr. Gina Kim. Straightforwardly penned, the bookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a compendium of practical advice â&#x20AC;&#x153;to put your body-mind-spirit in balance.â&#x20AC;?

Any evidently self-published work is scourged by stigmaâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;that aesthetic should somehow indicate meritâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;and The Power to Heal Yourself is particularly plagued. It has every hallmark of being adorably homemade, with large Times New Roman font and the like. Also cutely, the edition notice lists the bookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ rst and second printings as September and October 2010. Fortunately for my critique, chapter seven (titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Living Stress Free... Living Wellâ&#x20AC;?) advises readers to â&#x20AC;&#x153;make an agreement with your loved ones... [to] quickly say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sorry, please donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take it personally.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Ditto.

A Doctor of Chiropractic, Kim â&#x20AC;&#x153;quietly ministers her â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Cellular Regenerationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (CR) technique, a revolutionary natural healing modality she formulated in 1998,â&#x20AC;? from her Vineyard Street office in Wailuku. Kim writes that while â&#x20AC;&#x153;the inspiration for the title came many years ago after reading one of my favorite books, The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale... the idea behind this book had been incubating for many years.â&#x20AC;? Kim says she was â&#x20AC;&#x153;guided to write this book, and then guided to do-

Achieving Wellness Through Email

inding yourself on a quest for self-improvement may not be a realistic solitary endeavor. You can get discouraged by setting goals that you never attain, or distractions that rob you of focus. So, prompted by his openness about spiritualityâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;and because heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a man of unrivaled vocal talentsâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;I asked him to share his thoughts on the voice of God. â&#x20AC;&#x153;God has many voices,â&#x20AC;? said Vereen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;God speaks in the wind. God speaks in the bubbling of the brook; on the ocean. God speaks through the animals. Others have their way of talking about how God speaks to them, but this is how God speaks to me. And God is a great sound for the universe to make. Scripture says, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Be still and know that I am,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Be still. And in that stillness is the most resounding, the most beautiful sound youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d ever want to hear.â&#x20AC;?

That Vereen finds inspiration in stillness intrigued me, so I asked him to share an anecdote about the last experience that moved him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are many moments in my life that compel me to move in life itself,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But let me tell you a story: I was in an accident in 1992... I was walking home and was hit by a truck [and] when I arrived in the hospital I was pronounced dead.â&#x20AC;?

Vereen then described the outpouring of â&#x20AC;&#x153;prayer and vibrationsâ&#x20AC;? from medical professionals, family and fansâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;but how the doctors advised him to â&#x20AC;&#x153;start looking for another career.â&#x20AC;?

They said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d never dance again. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They told me my career as far as Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve known it was over,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t over it. I realized that struggle is of the mindâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;but that struggle must become an opportunity.â&#x20AC;?

Two years later, he was dancing to tap choreography by his friend Gregory Hines in the Broadway musical Jellyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Last Jam. And he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t slowed down since. â&#x2013; anu@mauitime.com + @anuheayagi

Oh what woe that Ben Vereenâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;arguably the greatest living song and dance man in this or any countryâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;seems to be suffering Beethovenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tragic irony. I say this because when I rang him for an interview in advance of his forthcoming Maui performance (this Fri., Jan. 27 at the MACCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Castle Theater) and said my introductory pleasantries, his first words to me were, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wow, what a beautiful voice you have!â&#x20AC;? If such a thing were true itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be a compliment of the highest order, coming from a prodigious and prolific Tony Award winner (with a handful of Emmy and Golden Globe noms, plus three NAACP Image Awards, to boot) whose stage and screen career has spanned more than four decades.

In 1967, at the age of 21, Vereen won a role in Bob Fosseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sweet Charity; and after a year of touring with the show, he landed a gig opposite Sammy Davis Jr. in the playâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s film adaptation. Vereen then starred in alternating roles as Hud and Claude in Broadwayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hair, before becoming Davisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s understudy in the London Palladiumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1968 production of Golden Boy. The early â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s were huge for Vereen, as he played Judas Iscariot in Andrew Lloyd Webberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nonpareil rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar (for which he received a Tony nom for Best Featured Actor in a Musical), followed by a return to work with Fosse in Pippin (which earned him his first Tony for Best Actor in a Musical). Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also famed for his role as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chicken Georgeâ&#x20AC;? in the Golden Globe and Peabody award-winning TV miniseries Roots (which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year)â&#x20AC;&#x201C;a groundbreaking program that depicted life before and during slavery.

It goes without saying that when talking story with Vereen, I found his voice beautiful; strikingly rich and rippled with passionate tone. Effortlessly eloquent, he speaks like a Broadway via Brooklyn bard composing on the fly.

This was best evidenced when I asked Vereenâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;seeing as heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a song and dance man unmatchedâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;to ascribe flavors to certain dance movements, or perhaps describe dance itself as a taste. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dance can be bitter. Dance can be sweet,â&#x20AC;? Vereen crooned. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It depends on what expressions come through. It could be anger or joy. It could be peace or sorrow. Dance has many flavors. It could be violent, or it could be sublime. It could be as gentle as summer or as upsetting as lightning. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an expression of the inner sea. That is the flavor of the dance, when you dance freely. What is your flavor? If you want to dance the dance of love, you can hold the world in your hands.â&#x20AC;?

SOJA (SOLDIERS OF JAH ARMY) Strength to Survive (ATO Records; 2012) While I can’t say that I don’t like SOJA’s latest effort, Strength to Survive (due for release Jan. 31), I can’t say that I do either. All I know is what I can say about the album reads a lot like a list of side effects from anti-anxiety medication: drowsiness, lack of energy, slow reflexes, confusion, disorientation, impaired thinking and nausea. Look, that’s not to say that Strength to Survive is without mainstream likability; and I have no doubt that tracks like “Not Done Yet” (which features hip DJ scratching during choruses) and the socially conscious lyrics of songs like “Nothing Ever Changes” will resonate with John Mayer-loving reggae crossover fans. But for me, listening to this disc is a surefire catalyst to a catatonic state. I feel no inspiration whatsoever to listen

to it again–that is, unless I’m looking for a rewarding catnap. Come to think of it, I should thank Strength to Survive for two of the best naps of my year thus far. Then again, if forced, the subtly gyrate-worthy beats of songs like “Mentality” and “Tell Me” could grow on me.

In fairness, maybe my expectations of SOJA have been a little high (no ganja pun intended). Earlier hits like 2002’s “True Love,” “Rasta Courage” and “Peace in A Time of War” prove SOJA’s capacity for sensational reggae–but sadly stand in contrast to their latest work, making Strength to Survive a disappointment.

And with pockets as shallow as they are these days, tired mediocrity isn’t enough to motivate me to buy the complete album, let alone recommend that anyone else should.

Silent Movie The Artist strikes cinematic gold

o explain how The Artist works is to almost apologize for it. If the words “black and white silent film” sound disagreeable, then yes, this won’t work for anyone not adventurous. This is a recreation of a silent film, with title cards telling you what the characters are saying, but there’s no dialogue, just music. It’s in black and white, in order to capture the look of a 1920’s motion picture and is a fictional period piece about a famous Hollywood actor. Most importantly, it’s really, really funny, moving and romantic and, after a few minutes of adjustment, you won’t notice or even care that it’s a silent film.

French actor Jean Dujardin (who won the Best Actor award at Cannes for his work here) stars as George Valentin, an in-demand, wealthy and multi-talented movie star who resembles (in looks and character) a cross between Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks.

His specialty is romantic action movies and his career is on the rise. His chance meeting with a gorgeous starlet Peppy Miller (played

by Berenice Bejo, another breakout star) gives him the first inkling that his fame and youth appeal may be running out. Once the Depression sets in, Valentin finds himself out of work, left with a mansion filled with relics of past glories and a loyal chauffeur (James Cromwell) he can barely afford.

The opening scenes, showing Valentin enjoying the acclaim and love of his audience a little too much, sets the tone perfectly. This isn’t a brooding history lesson like Hugo but a cheerful send up of Hollywood egos and formulas along the line of Singin’ in the Rain.

The cast is peppered with gifted character actors like John Goodman, Malcolm McDowell and Penelope Ann Miller who not only nail their dialogue-free roles but truly look like they come from the 1920’s.

Dujardin’s performance showcases how he’s easily as talented as the character he plays, with elaborate dance numbers, action set pieces and harder-than-they-look bits of comedy that would prove too demanding for many lesser actors. His ridiculously handsome looks and 50

Old school. Like, way old.

watt smile are initially his trademark and later are a poignant mask. Bejo matches him scene for scene, initially making us think of silent era actresses like Lillian Gish or Edna Purvience with her looks and style of performance; the character is all heart and Bejo is really touching as an actress who survives in Hollywood by her quick thinking and adaptability.

Most movies with cute dogs find the actors occasionally upstaged by adorable mutts and this one is no different. If anything, the film’s scene stealing dog, coupled with it’s boisterous sense of humor, cheerful tone, and unique offering as a “different” experience in the theaters, underlines what this truly is: a family film. Seriously folks, tell your kids about the way movies used to be, prepare them for something similar to a Charles Chaplin com-

edy and enjoy a truly great film and Oscar contender you can take everyone to see.

My only hesitation to giving this a full five stars is that, if I were to be mean, this is more a successful stunt than anything else. Yet, if you leave your cynicism at the door and take this little spellbinder for what it is (and ignore its rep as an award gathering ground breaker), the plain and simple fact is that it completely works.

I took someone to see it, not telling him what it was, and, despite early puzzlement, he absolutely loved it. The approach may be “old fashioned” but you’ll be dazzled by how entertaining this is. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1532f

isibly pinking in real time, she was the quintessential Tourist Lady–foamy visor, fanny pack n’ all–pale as a cream peony though hardly as pretty (sorry). At first glance I liked her for all the reasons I like every Tourist Lady like her: she was an honest-looking woman who, if nothing else, had chosen to spend her vacation and dollars on our little isle (and bless her for it), and furthermore had managed to navigate her way out of Resort Land and into ‘Iao Valley (which earns her extra points, at least in my book).

And cuter still, she was lugging a camera with a lens longer than her forearm while her Tourist Hubby looked on with loving, warm milk eyes. It was adorable. It always is.

But I found the Tourist Lady suddenly less endearing when she started photographing four, plain, feral chickens pecking in the parking lot. Chickens! Goddamned feral chickens! As if they were the creme de la creme of Hawaiian exoticism!

To think that this middle-aged gal from Middle America had spent a small fortune to hurtle 4,000 miles across Earth (and 40,000 miles above it), in an aluminum tube with jet propulsive properties–destination: Shangri La-if-there-ever-was-one–and of every majestic Maui thing to be enraptured by, she chose chickens.

Look, I’m not trying to belittle the chickens’ photogenic worth or whatever, but they happened to have had a little competition at the time.

Because God, ‘Iao was in rare form that day! I mean, we were standing–at sunset–in the belly of the most famous valley on the Valley Isle. Steep, foliaged cliffs cradled us closely to the North and South; and from exactly between the dips in the dale, the center of our solar system set in the West as our natural satellite rose equally in the East.

We were drenched in a wave of citrine light that poured over the apical edge of Maui’s storied westward range. The light dip-dyed cumulus clouds every flushed hue, and if you followed the beams’ path and turned makai, you’d find the moon a bright passenger on peach clouds puffed like parachutes in a stillblue sky. Fuck, man. It was awesome in the truest sense of the word.

Yet there was the Tourist Lady, eyes locked with the asphalt, trying to stifle her giggling wonder lest she scare-away the sacred fowl

and miss her dozenth chicken shot.

I wanted to yell, “Look up, Lady! How can you miss this?!” but I had neither the energy nor the courage. ✦✦✦✦✦ In other news, I’m an oblivious jerk.

Hey, I didn’t say breaking news! But man, I really fucked-up big this time.

Last week’s Da Kine Calendar was a little light on start-of-theweek listings, so I plopped-in an old blurb–which was coded as recurring every third Thursday– about the free lunchtime concert series called “Picnic with Poki.”

Today, my editor received a call reminding us that the venerable Allen “Braddah Poki” Pokipala had passed away late last September.

Oh, man. I am deeply sorry and more than mortified. Where the hell have I been?

In my meager defense, I’d recently seen tents and PAs and a KPOA banner outside the historic Ka‘ahumanu Church and thought, “Cool, that picnic concert’s still going–looking stronger than ever!” So later, I did a quick Google search which turned up a lingering calendar entry on KPOA’s website (among others) and assumed I was good to go.

Wrong.

“Chickens! Goddamned feral chickens! As if they were the creme de la creme of Hawaiian exoticism!”

Again, I’d like to apologize, and further, ask for forgiveness. ✦✦✦✦✦ So today, I’m thinking a lot about what other chickens I’m stuck looking at through a narrow lens, when the heavens meanwhile are tripping the light fantastic. ■

We get nervous about telling the truth when our gut says it won’t be well received, no matter how much the person we’d tell it to claims otherwise (“You can tell me anything!”).

Everyone’s been burned by someone who said they’re cool with whatever—and then freaked out when they heard what actually came out of your mouth. That shouldn’t stop us, though. The truth is the truth, and how people react to it is their problem, not yours. Even if you don’t like what that reaction is, isn’t it better to discover that now than learning what a hypocritical douche they are, later?

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Trust is delicate. It’s incredibly difficult to repair after it’s been shattered. Even once patched up, it’s more fragile than before, and can’t take rough treatment. You need to take special care around it, like shielding an injured body part from activities that would subject it to needless strain and cause re-injury. Yes, that’s extra work and not likely to be easy, but it’s necessary and obligatory in these circumstances. If you’re not able or willing to do that, you should probably make your exit now before you cause pain that could and should be avoided.

Will you now be blamed for enabling their screw-ups? These are all worthy considerations, but ultimately don’t get too into your head about it. Trust your gut. If your instincts say steer clear, then do so. If they say dive in and do what you can, then bombs away!

Being loving and generous is always appropriate as long as there isn’t a terribly selfish agenda behind it. Do try to spread the good cheer and affection (while of course remaining perceptive about how it’s being received). And don’t let naysayers tell you that you ought to be feeling otherwise or being vindictive or petty (like they probably would). Your ability to push past those kinds of emotions and remember all the good stuff is a special one. Keep exercising it. What goes around come around—which means you, too, will soon receive kindness and understanding when you least expect (or feel you deserve) it.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Everyone has stuff they do that they don’t notice doing, including you. Having someone hold up a mirror and point out these habits may not be a particularly pleasant experience, especially if the habits are unflattering, but it can still be a useful one. It’s always better to hear from someone that you’ve got spinach in your teeth than to discover it when you get home, knowing it was there all day. Be grateful, not annoyed, when someone points out this stuff, even if they do so maliciously. This kind of self-knowledge will only make you cooler, better, and stronger.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

It’s totally natural and understandable to hope that the next time you run into your ex, they’re fatter, shabbier, or otherwise worse off than when you two were together. But all that energy you’re wasting wishing them ill is doing you absolutely no good. How, after all, does your life improve when theirs suffers?

Imagine what you could accomplish with all that energy if you could just move on and forget them instead? Don’t spare them a thought unless they happen to be standing right in front of you. Easier said than done, I know—but this week you should be able to at least make progress in this department.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Sometimes just the fact that you’re even asking a question is an answer in and of itself. There are some things you should just know, and if those pieces of the puzzle are still missing at this point, it means it’s forming up into a completely different picture than what you anticipated. That might mean some real life readjustment that’s better accomplished sooner than later. Don’t keep trying to jam pieces into spaces they don’t fit into, just so this puzzle will turn out the way you hoped.

Figure out what it’s actually going to look like, and plan around that—whether you like it or not.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Some betrayals, while still brutally painful, have their roots in good intentions. Perhaps the person who (maybe inadvertently) stabbed you in the back had their eyes on the big picture instead of just your best interests, and was trying to do right by everyone involved. It’s incredibly difficult to separate yourself from your pain and try to see things as they do, but please try.

Context and long-term repercussions matter more here than your immediate personal suffering. If you can see what they saw, you’ll be more inclined to forgive—you might, surprisingly, even be glad you took one for the team.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

You may not be able to spin straw into gold, but many of your problems and woes can be transformed—into comedy. There’s not a lot you can do about some of the shit that goes down in your life, but figuring out ways to laugh at and about it is something you’re certainly capable of. That’ll make these burdens so much lighter. Of course, being able to chuckle at this stuff will involve taking yourself much less seriously—but you can handle that, can’t you? Try sharing these trials and tribulations with others, in such a way that they can laugh with (or perhaps, lovingly, at) you—that will, curiously, make them easier for you to handle, too.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Accidents happen, and even if people freak out in the moment, while their emotions are running away with them, they should be able to get to a more rational place once they’ve calmed down. Offer them that chance, before you give them hell for their initial overreactions. You, of all people, should know how it is to lose control while in the grip of a powerful feeling, so be the rational, understanding, and experienced one here, and practice patience and tolerance. Wait for their real, considered, more thoughtful response before you engage. Everyone will be happier that way.

Having blown the lid off many a minor cover-up, yourself, you should know that secrets don’t keep. Sooner or later, the truth comes out. Your experience tells you that sooner (except sometimes in the case of children who are too young to know some stuff) is always better than later. You also know that ‘fessing up is always received more open-mindedly than a guilty admission after someone’s snitched, so please consider that route. What you’ve done isn’t all that bad, after all—but it’ll seem much worse coming from someone else’s mouth, or after you’ve been caught in a lie. Go do what you’re good at: tell the truth, already.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Don’t ever begrudge yourself joy. Like everyone, you deserve to be happy. Try to minimize its potential negative impact on others, of course—but don’t deprive yourself in order to spare someone from feeling jealous or upset. That’s their baggage, not yours. Be compassionate but not masochistically stupid.

Downplaying the fun you’re having or your good luck in order to keep from rubbing it in someone’s face is one thing. Denying yourself the good fortune or joy that comes your way is quite another. It’s what you’ve got coming, so (quietly, if you must) enjoy it as much as you possibly can.
