Cells Out, Balls In? HYPER LOCAL Two weeks ago, I wrote a story about cell phones and driving and posed the question: do we need to be protected from ourselves? The answer, according to Councilman Joe Pontanilla, is yes. Last week, Pontanilla introduced a bill similar to the one recently enacted on Oahu that prohibits the use of hand-held electronic devices, with exemptions for emergency responders, workers using two-way radios and people calling 911. Pontanilla told me he was moved to action by constituents who’ve experienced “near misses” and have “children and grandchildren who have been in accidents because of cell phones.” Here’s an interesting wrinkle: there is already a law on the books that, by all appearances, gives police the ability to cite people for talking on phones or text messaging while behind the wheel. Section 291-12 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes concerning “inattention to driving” states: “Whoever operates any vehicle without due care or in a manner as to cause a collision with, or injury or damage to, as the case may be, any person, vehicle or other property shall be fined not more than $500 [amended in 2008 to raise the fee to $1,000] or imprisoned not more than thirty days, or both...” That language seems broad enough to include drivers distracted by electronic devices. One of the main—and most persuasive—arguments against a cell phone ban is that it addresses only one of the many distractions that cause unsafe driving. What about eating in the car, reading a magazine, fiddling with the radio, turning around to scold your rambunctious keiki? Should we pass individual laws concerning each of those things? I brought this up to Pontanilla, who said I was “the first to tell [him]” about 291-12. He said his conversations with prosecutors and law enforcement officials convinced him that a cell phone-specific ban was the right way to go. “It’s about public safety,” he said.

That may be true, but whether this bill and others like it are the right approach is another matter…. Back in the ’70s, Barry Obama was a high schooler on Oahu, giving a shout-out to his choom gang in the yearbook. Flash forward a few decades, and President Obama’s Justice Department is telling its attorneys to honor state medical marijuana laws. That’s been the Administration’s consistent position, but it was solidified in a memo sent this week to the 13 states with medical pot laws on the books, including the President’s birth state. It’s pretty funny (in the least “ha ha” sense possible) that

we’ve got a liberal Democrat in the White House advocating for states’ rights and a Republican Governor hiding behind federal prohibition. Of course, the memo doesn’t magically resolve all the issues surrounding Hawaii’s convoluted medical marijuana policy. I asked Mark Sheehan, who chairs the community committee of Democracy In Action (the group’s director, Brian Murphy, was arrested last year for dispensing marijuana through Paiabased Patients Without Time), for his take. In an e-mail, Sheehan called the memo “a ray of sanity amidst a cloud of misguided thinking,” but added that the onus is still on local officials to rework the system so patients can get medicine safely and enforcement efforts can be shifted to Yes, he inhaled.

LOCAL News stories always contain superfluous quotes, stuck in to give editors something to trim if space is tight. But every once in a while, you come across an indispensable remark that perfectly sums up an issue. Like this one, from Kehau Abad, a member of the Oahu Island Burial Council, addressing concerns that a portion of Honolulu’s rail line will disturb burial sites in the Honolulu Advertiser: “Something’s got to give. What we all know is…our values [and] what we hold dear—that’s what everybody asks us to give.” Reminds me of another line, repeated by numerous testifiers at a meeting about the proposed ATST telescope on Haleakala earlier this year: “You can’t mitigate spirituality.”

“drugs like ice that are the real blight in our communities.”… Though approval from the County Council is pending, it’s likely that Maui will have a professional baseball team next year, for the first time since the Stingrays folded more than a decade ago. As I noted last week, the independent Golden Baseball League wants to launch a Valley Isle squad, which will be run by Californiabased XnE Inc. I spoke with XnE CEO Rick Berry (no relation to the basketball legend), who said he’s excited to “get the community involved” in everything from naming the team and choosing its mascot to actually playing in the games. Berry said his “inbox is full of e-mails from local kids” who want to try out, and though he can’t give details until the process is finalized, he did say he has a “former big leaguer” lined up to manage the team. Berry said they’ll play 40-44 home games (at Wailuku’s War Memorial Complex),

That’s the message of 350.org, an organization named after a dangerous global warming tipping point: an amount of CO2 in the atmosphere greater than 350 parts per million, which NASA scientist James Hansen says is “not compatible with the planet on which civilization developed.”

Sounds bad. But wait, it gets worse: we’re already at 390 parts per million.

So is there hope? Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org, thinks so. In an article distributed through Blue Ridge Press, McKibben touted an effort set for October 24, when millions of people around the world will join in symbolic demonstrations. (Check out 350.org for info on Hawaii- and Maui-based actions.) “Nobody thinks this will be easy—fossil fuel lies at the heart of our economy, and replacing it with renewable power will be expensive. But it needs to be done,” wrote McKibben. “It’s not political—it’s educational…If you’ve ever despaired about the future, here’s a chance to try and shape it instead.” ■

Despite powerful friends, A&B may be losing its grasp on Maui’s water

f the attendees at last week’s water commission meeting in Paia are any indication, a familiar cast of characters still holds political clout on Maui and in Hawaii.

Gov. Lingle, her Department of Agriculture Director Sandra Lee Kunimoto and Mayor Tavares headlined a who’s-who list of testifiers, as the state Commission for Water Resource Management heard a full range of comments on the implications of returning flows to East Maui streams. An overflow crowd of more than 150 people filled Paia Community Center, many of them East Maui taro farmers or Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S) plantation employees.

A concerted push was made by HC&S, the Chamber of Commerce, Maui County Farm Bureau and others to speak out to “protect agricultural water” and save 800 plantation jobs threatened by multimillion dollar losses with the sugar crop.

Yet by the end of the evening, even HC&S employees were calling to support taro farmers by returning more water to the streams, especially in Honopou and Nahiku, and to find ways to stop dividing the community over the water issue.

Howden sternly reminded the audience that the plantation’s industrial monoculture is poisoning our air, soil and aquifer. “It’s really hard to watch this and go on as usual, and pretend it’s okay,” he concluded.

Kula organic farmer Gerry Ross, who grows more than 40 crops on four acres, called this the “defining issue of our time.” He spoke of efficient water use, using companion and cover crops and

he started working in the HC&S fields at age 18, “they just call you together and you nod your head.

“We should find an alternative crop [to sugar],” continued Maxwell. “It’s a dinosaur.” Maxwell said Hawaiians came to the islands 3,000 years ago and held a cultural and spiritual devotion to the land. “Taro farmers should be number one,” he added.

C&S plantation manager Chris Benjamin said that with reduced yields from a 3-year drought, their losses this year could be $25 million.

Shareholders are not very tolerant, he said, and come January parent corporation Alexander & Baldwin will have to make hard decisions about the future of sugar. He said they’re looking into alternatives but “that is not possible today.” He indicated they need assurances of water, and to keep sugar in the ground until they can make a transition.

The next speaker, Upcountry permaculturist/acupuncturist Michael Howden, challenged those assertions and chastised Benjamin for publicly stating at a recent meeting that HC&S is “not considering any other crop.” Howden called for the company to embrace real alternatives to “growing a thirsty tropical grass on sand dunes in Central Maui.”

Howden, also chair of the Maui Board of Water Supply but speaking on his own behalf, asked what the County is doing to find solutions. He spoke of millions of gallons of diverted water leaking out of the decrepit Waikamoi flume system, and said the County needs high lift pumps and more filtration at their Kamaole Weir treatment plant.

liza Goodhue said her grandmother fought for water rights in New England many years ago. “We need a consciousness change about water,” she said, “and to grow things of benefit to us all.”

Honopou resident Joey Buck read excerpts from A&B’s recent 10K report filing, listing developments planned for Central Maui. “Where will the water come from for thousands of homes?” she asked.

Buck also noted that the agricultural sector constitutes only 6 percent of A&B’s total revenue. She read a quote in the report that stated proposed stream diversions “won’t affect HC&S’s operation.”

Foster Ampong implored those gathered to understand the real meaning of the word “sustainability.” He likened water for the Hawaiians to the importance of buffalo to Native Americans.

Lucienne de Naie said that, from her experience hiking in East Maui, it’s not just streams being diverted but “every little seepage [being] collected into the ditches, leaving the stream beds dry.”

Kula resident and retired MCC professor Dick Mayer claimed the ditch systems have been adequately paid for over time and should belong to the public. He asked what the cost of water delivery would be if the County took over the system.

Mayer said windmills could be used to pump brackish waters from HC&S wells, and stated that alternative crops could provide more than the 800 jobs the company says are in danger. He provided a detailed list of 10 potential and current water users, and recommended the CWRM put them in a matrix to clarify the uses.

Wesley Bissen said he’s a third generation HC&S worker. “I’m in the economical system,” he stated.

“I gotta live, so I work at HC&S.” Another HC&S worker, Sheldon Biga—the 42nd speaker of the night— said he’s part of a committee forming to discuss things, and reached out to all in the audience to work together with them. “Call me,” Biga said. ■

his Saturday, four Robert’s Hawaii buses will shuttle 100 enthusiasts around the “back-side” to one of Maui’s unique and fertile growing regions—Kipahulu. Vincent Mina, founder of Maui Aloha ‘Aina Association (MA‘A), which is the event’s main sponsor, says spots are still available but that the event is close to being sold out at press time.

The tour affords a rare opportunity to visit and observe four separate organic farm operations, with expert soil analyst and Hawaii farmer Bob Shaffer also on board. “The strong part of Kipahulu,” Mina says, “is diversity: fruits, taro, veggies, bamboo, all possible because of Southern exposure and good rainfall and soil.” A gourmet lunch will feature local exotic fruits, taro-breadfruit-sweet potato salad, home brewed ginger kombucha and Maui grass-fed beef for the non-vegetarians.

Stephan Reeve’s Ornament of Earth Sustainable Food Farm is the final location on the tour. “Stephan has all the diverse components of what’s needed to feed and sustain himself,” Mina says. “He has created a 10-acre edible landscape that is also a work of art. Hopefully people will leave his place with an expanded vision of what’s possible.”

Mina, whose own commercial family operation provides several varieties of fresh sprouts and sprout mixes, says the tour is really a follow-up to a sold-out visit made back in 2002. “The investment,” he says, “is what [people] do with the experience when they leave, to support what they want.”

October is usually the month for MA‘A’s Body & Soil Conference, a two-day event featuring national experts, often held at a working Upcountry organic farm. This year, the conference will be held in January and will follow the premise that building healthy soil nurtures healthy nutrient-dense plants, which in turn nurture healthy bodies.

Mina hopes both the tour and the conference will offer ecological inspiration.

“We’re giving people an opportunity to experience abundance,” he says, “to let their innate experiences of nature surface.” ■

By the Numbers CONSPIRACY THEORY OF EVOLUTION When Arthur David Horn met his future bride Lynette (a “metaphysical healer”) in 1988, he was a tenured professor at Colorado State, with a Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale, teaching a mainstream course in human evolution. With Lynette’s guidance (after a revelatory week with her in California’s Trinity Mountains, searching for Bigfoot), Horn “evolved” himself, resigning from Colorado State and seeking to remedy his inadequate Ivy League education. At a conference in Denver in September, Horn said he now realizes that humans come from an alien race of shapeshifting reptilians that continue to control civilization through the secretive leaders known as the Illuminati. Other panelists in Denver included enthusiasts describing their own experiences with various alien races.

IRRITABLE BOWELS INDEED On Aug. 28, a suicide bomber approached Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, intending to kill them both using a new, mysterious device that an al-Qaida video had earlier proclaimed would be impossible to detect.

The terrorist blew up only himself, though, and security investigators concluded that his “bomb” was a 3-inch-long explosive hidden in his rectum. A Transportation Security Administration official downplayed the puny power of such a small device (but its effectiveness in bringing down an airplane is still an open question).

MISALLOCATED FUNDS

While state and local governments furiously pare budgets by laying off and furloughing workers, retired bureaucrats who receive defined-benefit pensions (rather than flexible 401(k) retirement accounts) continue to receive fixed payouts. According to a California organization advocating that government retirement benefits be changed from pensions to 401(k) accounts, one retired fire chief in northern California gets $241,000 a year, and a retired small-town city administrator’s pension is $499,674.84 per year, guaranteed.

ALMOST HEAVEN Among the ramblings on the blog of George Sodini (the gunman who killed three women in a Pennsylvania health club, and then himself, in August) was his belief that,

having once been “saved,” he would enter heaven even if he happened to commit mass murder. Sodini attributed the belief to one of his church’s pastors, and another church official, Deacon Jack Rickard, told the Associated Press that he personally believes Sodini is in heaven (“once saved, always saved”), though Rickard somehow split the difference: “He’ll be in heaven, but he won’t have any rewards because he did evil.”

SWALLOWING IN MISERY John Manley, 50, breathed pain-free in September for the first time in two years after surgeons discovered the source of his coughing and discomfort. Manley said he “like[s] to take big gulps of drink,” which is his only explanation for why a 1-inch piece of a plastic utensil was lodged not in his stomach but in his lung. Duke University surgeon Momen Wahidi recalled the scene in the operating room as they tried to make out what the fragment was: “We started reading out loud, ‘a-m-b-u-r-g-e-r” (for Wendy’s Old-Fashioned Hamburgers).

MONEY FROM NOTHING

Two men were arrested in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, in September after allegedly scamming four local businessmen out of a total of $160,000, but the scam may reflect worse on the victims than the perpetrators. The victims were somehow persuaded by the alleged scammers that bills of currency can duplicate themselves if soaked in a secret chemical overnight. The perpetrators “demonstrated” the chemical’s power by a sleight-of-hand, probably involving a hidden $100 bill that, after soaking, appeared alongside an original $100 bill. (Readers who want to try chemically doubling their money thusly will need bleach, baby powder and hair spray, which the perpetrators had recently purchased.)

INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS Mitchell Deslatte, 25, drove in and parked at a Louisiana state trooper station in Baton Rouge in July, staggered inside and asked the man behind the desk for a room, thinking he was in a hotel. He was arrested for DUI. ■

To Hawaiian Airlines for failing to pass profits on to consumers. Even as it continues to charge passengers for the first checked bag on interisland flights (as previously noted in this space), the airline reported a $30.7 million third quarter profit and announced its fuel costs decreased 48 percent compared to last year, according to a Pacific Business News dispatch. There’s nothing wrong with a company making a profit, but if people are expected to pay up when the money’s bad, it’s only fair that they should be rewarded (or at least nickel-and-dimed less) when the money’s good.

To Mana Foods for reaching the quarter-century mark.This month, the popular Paia health food store is celebrating 25 years in business with a series of customer appreciation events, including a BBQ fundraiser for the Paia Youth & Cultural Center on October 30 (check out manafoodsmaui.com for more info). Even if herbal supplements and kombucha tea aren’t your thing, you’ve got to give credit to a local establishment dedicated to healthful, sustainable food (40 percent of Mana’s produce is grown in Hawaii and between 80 and 90 percent is certified organic, according to a company

release). Plus, Mana employs about 100 people, an especially important fact these days.

To the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), for putting the Rainbow Warriors at the bottom of the heap. The recently released results of the WAC’s preseason poll placed the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team last in the nineteam conference. Of course, they did finish eighth last year with a pedestrian 13-17 record, but really this is more about the value of the poll in general. If the votes of coaches and media types are so great, why even play the games? We can just crown a champ now and avoid all that sweating. Of course, if the UH dudes manage to turn this into motivation and prove the doubters wrong, maybe it’s not so worthless after all.

Thrill-free thriller not half as scary as the story it’s based on The Stepfather

ou ready for a scary story? There once was a man named John List who lived in New Jersey with his wife and kids during the ’70s. He was a quiet, highly religious shut-in who didn’t talk to the neighbors much and kept his family tight and indoors. List was in serious debt but, rather than declare bankruptcy, which would have shamed him, he decided the thing to do was murder each member of his family, in order to reunite with them in Heaven. He carefully placed their bodies in sleeping bags, made his neighbors think they had gone on vacation, left church music playing on rotation and vanished. By the time the gruesome crime scene was discovered, List was long gone, living in another state, disguised by a pair of glasses and a new identity. A decade later, while living with his second wife, a broadcast of America’s Most

Wanted aired, depicting his unsolved crime, which caused his neighbor to call the show and report List’s whereabouts.

This horrific tale inspired The Stepfather, a 1987 thriller that starred Terrence O’Quinn of Lost as a fictionalized version of List and the film, like O’Quinn’s intense, brilliant performance, is memorable and frightening.

Now, we have a remake that is forgettable, toothless and barely even creepy.

This time, Dylan Walsh plays a homicidal maniac who picks up lonely widows at the supermarket, marries them and, when they inevitably disappoint him, slaughters them, changes his appearance and starts over. He finally pulls his act on a family that catches on.

Here’s a film that could have claimed to be “based on a true story,” but they wisely avoided that, as the actual story and movie this is based on are so much more terrifying, they make this look like the bland, gutless waste of time it is. I’ve complained about PG-13 movies going too far before, but this is something new: here’s a PG-13 thriller so tame, the rating seems like overkill. Other

OK, I'll finish my homework.

nothing here is shocking.

The pace is too fast but, instead of rushing to get to the good parts, the fierce editing rushes to…nothing. There are a lot of scenes of people talking about the plot and of Amber Heard parading around in sexy attire (she appears to have graduated from the Megan Fox School of Modeling as Acting). Walsh is the most compelling figure onscreen, but he doesn’t give a strong or inventive performance. The family Walsh marries into is so annoying and bland, I was actually rooting for him to start offing them.

The climactic attic showdown bizarrely steals from, of all things, the Beyonce throwdown from Obsessed and the closing scene, intended to leave you trembling with fear, is unintentionally hilarious. Last year, director Nelson McCormick made Prom Night, a passable remake of a terrible slasher movie. This time, he took a compelling film and made another rotten horror snoozefest. ■

Alongside navigator Fred Noonan (in a rebuilt Lockheed Electra), she disappeared mysteriously over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937, while attempting to become the first woman to fly around the world. Pairing the story of inspirational Earhart with Swank, and it’s clear that this film is begging for more than a nod. 111 min.

Astro Boy - PG - Family - A skillful scientist creates a super-power robot in the image of his deceased son—known as Astro Boy. Still grieving, he rejects the replica he created. When aliens threaten the Earth, Astro Boy embarks on an adventure to save the planet, become famous, and reconcile with pops. 94 min.

Cirque Du Freak : The Vampireís Assistant - PG13 - Fantasy - More lighthearted than Twilight, to which obvious parallels are drawn, this flick is based on novels by Darren Shan.

Pals Darren (Chris Massoglia) and Steve (Josh Hutcherson) peek in on a strange circus that’s come to town. How strange? Selma Hayek is the bearded lady—and oddly missing from most of the previews, I might add. Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) is fo’ realz vampire who, to Steve’s dismay, takes Darren into his ranks and a war with the Vampanese. 108 min.

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell - R - Comedy - Based on the true, twisted adventures of Tucker Max (Matt Czuchry), from a book by the same name, which spent four years on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Max dupes his buddy Dan (Geoff Stults)—who is on the verge of marriage to fiance Kristy (Keri Lynn Pratt)—into lying to Kristy so they can cavort at a legendary strip club. Add to the lies and strippers, midgets and “a fat girl,” and things turn sticky. 105 min.

Saw 6 - R - Horror - Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is the Jigsaw’s (Tobin Bell) successor, and the FBI’s actions against him instigate another “game,” which reveals, in this sixth installment, the Jigsaw’s master-plan. 90 min.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - PG - Family - The beloved book--a husband and wife team-production by Judi (author) and Ron Barrett (illustrator)--has inspired kids since it’s first publication in 1978 and finally gets its due props with a movie. However, while I really try to refrain from negativity--especially with kids flicks--the trailers have really rubbed me the wrong way. How can producers stray so far from the book’s incredible illustrations? So, keiki, if you see this movie, promise me you’ll read the book too. 90 min.

Couples Retreat - PG-13 - Comedy - Stars Vince Vaughn, John Favreau, Jason Batemen (heh heh), Faizon Love, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, Kristen Davis and Kali Hawk, as four Mid-

western couples who embark on a surf, sun and sand retreat in order to reconnect. Supposed hilarity ensues when the gurus there to guide them to marital bliss cause a quirky mess. 107 min G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - PG13 - Action - A super-elite team of international military operatives battle the evildoer organization Cobra, with high tech weapons the likes of which you probably never dreamed of while playing with your Hasbro toys in the sandbox. This flashy new rendition’s sandy battlefield is, not surprisingly, a North African desert. 120 min.

The Invention of Lying - PG13 - Comedy Ricky Gervais (creator of The Office) and Matthew Robinson direct this film about a world in which no one has ever lied. Gervais not only directs, he stars too, as writer Mark Bellison, who figures out how to be bad (all by himself, I think), capitalizes on it. 105 min.

Law Abiding Citizen - R - Thriller - Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) exacts revenge when the man who murdered his wife and children a decade ago, is released. Nick Rice (Jaime Foxx) is the prosecutor who was assigned to the case, and responsible for the plea bargain that saved the killer.

Shelton—a brilliant sociopath pushed to the brink by his trials—contends with Rice, who he feels is part of a broken justice system. 122 min.

Pandorum - R - Thriller - In total blackness, two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber, completely unaware of who they are, let alone their mission. At first they believe they’re alone on the ship, before they realize the terrible truth. 112 min.

The Step Father - R - Thriller - Penn Badgley plays Michael Harding, a young man who has just returned home from military school, who’s suspicious about his mother’s (Sela Ward) new boyfriend (Dylan Walsh) are frighteningly confirmed. 102 min.

Surrogates - PG13 - Sci-Fi - In the future, robots are smarter and better looking than humans. So, humans decide to live in isolation and interact with fellow bag of bones via robots alone.

Bruce Willis plays an FBI agent who investigates some mischief and conspiracy surrounding the murder of the surrogate inventor. 112 min.

Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself - PG13 - Comedy - Aunty April (Taraji P. Henson), a lounge singer, drinks heavily and lives off of her married boyfriend, Raymond. Wanting little to do with her delinquent niece and two nephews recently charged under her care, she starts to reassess her lifestyle when an intriguing young Mexican man moves into her basement. 113 min.

Where the Wild Things Are - PG - Family - Director Spike Jonze teamed with Dave Eggers in creating the hip screen adaptation of this classic children’s tale, written and illustrated by the legendary Maurice Sendak.

Staying true to the book’s delightfully moody palate, Jonze combines live action with CGI and (the all-too lost art of) puppeteering— bringing to life the whimsical characters beloved by so many since 1963. 94 min.

Whip It - PG13 - Comedy - Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut about a bored Texan, Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page), who wants to go wild and does so by joining rinks/ranks (whatever) with some rockin’ roller derby chicks. Not content with a crazy name like Bliss, she opts for the skater alter-ego, Babe Ruthless. See the flick and feel inspired? Maui’s got some great sk8 opportunities! Zombieland - R - Horror - This is one of the few flicks I’ve been truly excited about.

Since Dervish’s formation in 1989, this traditional Irish group has time and again reaffirmed themselves as “a national jewel of Ireland.” In 1993, after the release of their debut album, Harmony Hill, Dervish was invited by the Clintons to perform at the White House St. Patrick’s Day party, and was the first Irish band to play Rio’s mega-festival “Rock in Rio” (in 2001, before an audience estimated at 240,000). Awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Sligo in 2004 by the Sligo City Council, the band was later invited by Irish Prime minister Bertie Ahern to accompany nearly “the entire Irish government” on a 2006 trade mission to China—the largest of its kind to date for Ireland—and perform for Chinese government officials. In the early 1930s, Christopher Isherwood penned the semi-autobiographical novel, Goodbye Berlin. In 1951, John Van Druten adapted Isherwood’s work into the play, I Am Camera, which later inspired Cabaret—the musical that hit Broadway in 1966, followed by the silver screen in 1972 (yep, the very one that earned Liza Minelli an Oscar for Best Actress and Best Director for Bob Fosse). Set during the Nazi’s rise to power in 1931, the Weimar Republic’s Kit Kat Klub provides seedy backdrop for the two relationships examined.

The biggest piece of culture shock I experienced when I returned to this country after years abroad was the overdeveloped sense of entitlement most Americans have. Many people walk around expecting to be served, and for people to do things for them (like bag their groceries) that they could very easily do for themselves, and to more or less be treated like nobility. Where did this social programming come from?

It’s pretty lame, especially in a country where equality is at least theoretically the goal. There are many things to be proud of as an American. Expecting royal treatment from others isn’t one of them. I try to notice and squelch that expectation in myself whenever possible. You should, too.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

You can be messy. That goes for your house, your car, and your emotions. Having everything in its own neat little box doesn’t usually work that well for you. That means that if you encounter someone who really prefers their life to be mostly neat and tidy, you’re in trouble. You need to assess whether you feel like cleaning up a lot more than you’re used to or usually comfortable with, because they’re not likely to get into hanging around in your mess. If you can’t do that, walk away now before you both waste a lot of time.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Quick personal change isn’t something you generally do. You’re as capable of changing as the next person (and perhaps more so than some, because of your stubborn willpower and determination), but usually much more slowly. Some people are willing to totally turn their lives upside down, like a tornado swept through, and live in their disastrously reconfigured surroundings while they slowly get things back in order. Your style of change is more glacial, with incremental, thoughtful, and slow movements towards the place you want to go. This is something that’s important for you to understand—not so you can judge it, but so you can explain it to those who need to know.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

If your dog has an accident in the next room, the solution isn’t to simply spray loads of air freshener in this one and hope your guests don’t notice. That mess needs to be taken care of, right away, even if the timing couldn’t be more inconvenient, and the one responsible for making the mess needs to be taken care of, too. These things happen, and trying to hide, cover, or ignore them is the act of a child, not an adult. Be the grown up, and take care of things when they come up, as graciously and gracefully as possible, not when doing so is convenient for you.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

You can’t be clear about communicating your boundaries if you’re not sure where they are. The lines have been blurred recently, and consequently you have people stepping across them all over the place.

You can’t really blame them, though, seeing as how you haven’t been that good about showing them just where those lines lie. Once you do, most will probably be much more respectful of them. This is a good week to figure out just where those lines should be drawn, exactly. Don’t bother whipping out any of your old “maps;” they’re likely to have shifted quite a bit since then.

There are certain things (like eating well or getting a lot done) that come quite naturally to you, and certain things (like really relaxing and making huge, disastrous, and wonderful messes) that don’t.

Knowing this about yourself is a tremendous boon, and can create amazing opportunities to share, learn from someone else, and most of all, bond with someone else.
