The Week in Review Man of letters, man of Maui Don't feel bad if you're not entirely sure what the United States Poet Laureate does; we had to look it up too. The person—technically called the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress—is selected annually by the Librarian of Congress (another position we kinda didn't know existed) and his or her job is to serve “as the nation's official lightning rod for the poetic impulse of Americans.” (Insert joke about the average American's poetic impulse here.) This is relevant to Maui because one of our own was given the title this week. W.S. Merwin, a Valley Isle resident since 1976, will assume his new duties in October. In a release, a Library of Congress rep compared Merwin to William Wordsworth, because “his poems often deal with simple everyday things, [but] there is a nourishing quality about them that makes readers want more.”

Our only quibble (and admittedly it's a minor one) is that the release, like many of the major news reports, indicates only that Merwin lives in “Hawaii.” We know that to most of the Mainland we're one big, indistinguishable blur of palm trees and tiki torches, but it's not every day our humble island can claim an honor like this. If Merwin were from, say, Seattle, it's doubtful the release would simply read “Washington.” Is a little shout-out too much to ask?

It's official: hang up and drive With a wave of her pen, Mayor Tavares sealed the fate of drive-and-gabbers across Maui County. Bill 40, which prohibits the use of mobile electronic devices while behind the wheel, is now the law. “As our county’s population of drivers increase [sic] and technology finds

its way into everyday activities, it’s become necessary to consider additional ways to help keep motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists safe,” said Tavares in a statement.

“The new law may inconvenience some drivers, [but] it’s an important one.” Violators face a fine of $100 for a first offense and $250 or more if they're nailed again. There are exceptions—for emergency responders and commercial vehicles using two-way radios—and hands-free devices will be allowed except for drivers with learner's permits or

that it will begin posting politicians' financial disclosure statements online (follow the link at co.maui. hi.us). Current information on council and mayoral candidates as well as elected and appointed officials will be viewable; hard copies and old statements must be requested from the County Clerk. The last time financial disclosure statements made headlines, you'll remember, was when Councilmember Wayne Nishiki filed his late during the 2008 election, seemingly to bury a $100,000 personal

We've repeatedly noted that the ban is unnecessary (not because texting your boyfriend while making a u-turn is safe but because there's already a statute on the books covering all forms of distracted driving) but now it's a moot point. What'll be interesting going forward is to see how, when and where the law is enforced. What measures will police take to determine if someone is in violation?

Will certain areas, or types of driver, be targeted? What about tourists—will they be given a grace period or will cops be camped out on Airport Road? We of course encourage everyone to fully comply. But if you happen to forget—and get busted—we invite you to share your story.

If a similar scandal plays out this year in any local races, it'll be easier for all of us to keep tabs. That's a good thing.

Forgive him his trespasses?

Hawaii once again had one of the lowest Census return rates in the country, meaning a lot of folks will be getting (or have already gotten) knocks on their doors.

In the case of one Big Island Census worker the reception was less than warm.

By which we mean he got arrested.

The worker, according to an AP dispatch, entered the property of a police officer in the isolated Puna district. The off-duty cop refused even to accept the Census form and, after the worker didn't leave, called his colleagues in blue. As the case heads to court—a hearing is set for July 22—it presents a unique conundrum: a

Hawaii County prosecutor will argue the case against the Census worker, while a federal prosecutor will defend him. Brings up all sorts of tangled issues related to states' rights and federal versus local authority. But let's not forget all this could have been avoided had the cop simply answered the ten questions and mailed the damn form in.

Kauai is at the center of a different kind of privacy flap, as Lihue Airport has started using “advanced imaging” technology, i.e., machines that can see through your clothes. According to a recent Honolulu Star-Advertiser report, one man was redflagged because he had a wad of napkins in his pocket. Since these devices went into use, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has taken pains to assure passengers their nude silhouettes won't wind up at nakedairportpics.com (domain currently available). “The officer who assists the passenger never sees the image the technology produces,” reads a statement posted on TSA's Web site. “The officer who views the image is remotely located in a secure resolution room and never sees the passenger. The two officers communicate via wireless headset.”

Further, “the image is automatically deleted from the system after it is cleared.” Some, including the ACLU, say this still crosses the line and that there are other, less invasive ways to ensure security. Then there are those who will never trust TSA (or any government body) farther than they can throw an L-3 ProVision™ underwater.

Re the July 1 feature “Cover the Gulf”: Nice to see Kate Bradshaw getting a story in the paper, but too bad it had to be about this horrible mess. A HANDFUL OF CASH MAKES THE MEDICINE GO DOWN A severe but underappreciated American drug problem (sometimes deadly and often expensive) is patients’ failure to take prescribed medications, even to save their own lives (such as with anticoagulants or cholesterol-regulating statins). In recent pilot programs, according to a June New York Times report, compliance rates have been significantly improved--by giving patients money ($50 to $100 a month, sometimes more) if they remember to take their drugs. Data show that, indeed, such compliance subsidies reduce society’s overall health care costs by preventing expensive hospital admissions. Beyond health care costs is the social benefit when violent schizophrenics take their meds and refrain from attacking people.

ATTENTION ARIZONA LATINOS: BUY SQUIRREL COSTUMES Arizona (viewed by some as hard-hearted for its April law stepping up its vigilance for illegal immigrants) showed a soft side recently, implementing a $1.25 million federal grant that it believes will save the lives of at least five squirrels a year. The state’s 250 endangered Mount Graham red squirrels risk becoming roadkill on Route 366 near Pima, and the state is building a rope bridge for them to add to several existing tunnels.

RUFF CROWD At a June concert in Australia’s Sydney Opera House, American musicians Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed performed Anderson’s 20-minute, very-highpitched composition, “Music for Dogs,” an arrangement likely to have been largely unmelodious to humans, who generally cannot hear such high pitches, but of more interest to dogs, who can.

(Dogs were permitted in the audience, but news reports were inconclusive about their level of enjoyment.)

AUTO-TUNING FOR ALLAH Many jihadist recruiting pitches are dry and pious, but in May, the Somali activist Abu Mansoor al-Amriki, 26, who was born in Alabama, began streaming Internet rap “music” videos to encourage warrior sign-ups. (Sample verse: “It all started out in Afghanistan/When we wiped the oppressors off the land/ The Union crumbled and tumbled/ Humbled, left them mumbled/Made a power withdraw and cower.”) Actually, there was no music but merely alAmriki singing, presumably because in the version of Islam favored by Somali jihadists, “music” is not permitted.

SELF INCRIMINATING In May, the chief media spokesman of the

Nye County, Nevada, sheriff’s office, Det. David Boruchowitz, announced to the press the arrest of a man charged with burglary and assault. The suspect’s name, he reported, was Det. David Boruchowitz.

The chief investigator on the case, Det. Boruchowitz told reporters, was Det. David Boruchowitz. (Three days later, the charges were dropped, but that announcement was made by someone else.)

BREAST GUESS In Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, it is illegal for men and women to publicly reveal their genitals and for women to reveal their breasts, but Police Chief Keith Banks, confronted in June with complaints about some beachgoers flouting their shapely breasts, said there was nothing he could do. Banks said the offenders were actually biological males in the midst of hormonal transgendering. As Banks explained, “They had male genitalia. Therefore, they were not guilty of a crime.”

BEATING THE SYSTEM In April, Prince Edward Island (Canada) judge John Douglas acquitted minor league hockey player Chris Doyle of assaulting his former girlfriend, though Doyle had arrived at her home uninvited, had annoyed and berated her and would not leave. The girlfriend was injured when Doyle punched a door, causing it to smash against her face, but Judge Douglas accepted that Doyle honestly did not know she was behind the door.

Said the judge, “If he was charged with being a colossal asshole, I would find him guilty. Of ‘assault causing bodily harm,’ I find him not guilty.”

MUST BE THE VODKA On television in May, the governor of the Russian republic of Kalmykia, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, recounted that he had been abducted in a spaceship in 1997 and forced to communicate with aliens telepathically, and later entertained some in his apartment. One opponent seized the moment and called for an inquiry into whether Ilyumzhinov had telepathically spilled government secrets while under the aliens’ spell. Then, former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov announced he would challenge Ilyumzhinov for the position of head of the World Chess Federation (which Ilyumzhinov has been since 1993), but yet another Russian chess icon, Arkady Dvorkovich (who is President Medvedev’s chief economic adviser), said he still backed Ilyumzhinov because of the latter’s superior managerial talent. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1403n

WITH THE CIVIL UNION BILL, GOV. LINGLE HAD A CHANCE TO GO OUT ON A HIGH NOTE. INSTEAD, SHE SANK TO A NEW LOW

Soo Lingle will be out of office. Like so Soon, man other cowardly, inept politicians, many her legacy is sealed. Thankfully, the legacy of gay rights in Hawaii—and the rest of the world—is evolving, moving slowly but perceptibly forward.

T'LL PROVIDE COLD COMFORT AT BEST TO THE THOUSANDS OF COUPLES STILL MOURNING GOV. LINDA LINGLE'S eleventh-hour veto of civil union bill HB444, but it's a fact nonetheless: eventually, gay people will be able to get married. In Hawaii. In California. In Oklahoma. Everywhere. The suppression of civil rights is always a temporary condition; the climb may be precipitous, the battle protracted, but eventually freedom will out.

That's the long view. The more immediate reality is that, once again, gays—easily the most persecuted and marginalized minority group in the state, the nation and probably the world—have been denied, turned back, ignored. This latest battle began in 2009, when HB444 was introduced and passed by the state House of Representatives before the Senate quashed it in committee. At the time, we called the Senators who voted to let the bill die cowards when few other local publications would. We also held out hope that next time the result would be different. »

This year, the Senate passed a new version of HB444 and the House took its turn playing coward, shelving the bill. Then, at the last minute, it was brought back for a vote and passed the House by a healthy (though not veto-proof) margin.

And so the stage was set. All that was left was a signature from Gov. Lingle. Victory was at hand, but the deck still seemed stacked against HB444. First, Lingle is a Republican, and while her party has boasted its share of closeted homosexuals, it isn't known for championing gay rights.

Meanwhile, Lingle's right-hand man, Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona, is a hard-line religious conservative and vocal opponent of samesex unions. He's also running for governor, meaning the decisions Lingle makes will stick to him.

And yet, in the interim between HB444's passage and the July 6 veto deadline, something strange happened: Lingle lost her tongue. Usually more than willing to debate issues in the media—see two of her most egregious missteps, the Superferry boondoggle and the Furlough Friday mess—she suddenly fell silent, issuing little more than cryptic, wait-and-see statements and jetting off on an eleven-day tour of Asia just as the story was reaching critical mass.

When she returned, she put HB444 on her veto list but still wouldn't tip her hand.

Finally, the day arrived. The wait was over. Lingle stepped in front of the cameras.

And this is what she said: “After months of listening to Hawaii’s citizens express to me in writing and in person their deeply held beliefs and heartfelt reasons for supporting or opposing the civil unions bill, I have made the decision to veto HB444. I have been open and consistent in my opposition to same-gender marriage and find that HB444

is essentially marriage by another name.

However, I want to be clear that my personal opinion is not the basis for my decision against allowing this legislation to become law. Neither is my veto based on my religious beliefs or on the political impact it might have on me or anyone else of either political party in some future election. I am vetoing this bill because I have become convinced that this issue is of such significant societal importance that it deserves to be decided directly by all the people of Hawaii.”

So that's part one of her reasoning: the people should decide. Sounds good on its face; we live in a democracy, after all—what principle is more fundamental than the will of the majority? Answer: the rights of the minority. History has taught us time and again that what the majority supports in the moment is often reprehensible in hindsight.

Slavery, internment camps and Jim Crow are merely a few, dramatic examples. The duty of a free society—and its leaders—is to protect the minority from the repressive whims of mob rule, to suppress the prevailing will, when necessary, to safeguard bedrock liberties.

More from Lingle's veto announcement: “In the end, it wasn’t the persuasiveness of public debates, the soundness of legal arguments or the volume of letters and e-mails that convinced me to reach this decision. It was the depth of emotion felt by those on both sides of the issue that revealed to me how fundamental the institution of marriage is to our community. It is as fundamental to those who support marriage between two people of the same gender as it is to those who support marriage only between one man and one woman.”

There's part two of the Governor's reasoning: moral equivalency, the notion that people on both sides have valid,

competing claims. We've addressed this before but it bears repeating: rights are not a zero-sum game. When one group gains, another doesn't necessarily lose. The right of gay couples to enjoy the basic privileges associated with legal marriage—filing taxes, receiving benefits, making life and death decisions—has nothing to do with heterosexuals. It has nothing to do with religious people. The threat to “traditional marriage” is an imaginary one, born of ignorance, prejudice and fear. To claim that fear deserves the same consideration as the emancipation of an oppressed minority is more than an insult—it's an affront to our shared humanity, the antithesis of integrity and fundamental decency.

Finally, here's Lingle's closing paragraph: “While some will disagree with my decision to veto this bill, I hope most will agree that the flawed process legislators used does not reflect the dignity this issue deserves.” Even given the audacity of what came before, this is staggering. At the end of a speech announcing her repudiation of civil rights, in which she justified her decision with flimsy logic and veiled bigotry, she had gall to suggest HB444 was somehow “undignified.”

Soon, Lingle will be out of office, hopefully replaced by a chief executive with a measure of fortitude and foresight. Like so many other cowardly, inept politicians, her legacy is sealed. Thankfully, the legacy of gay rights in Hawaii—and the rest of the world—is evolving, moving slowly but perceptibly forward. Eventually, gay people will be able to get married. We hope that day is near. ■

Now, it will be up to the next governor and legislature to ensure that all people of Hawaii receive equal treatment. Protecting people’s civil rights cannot be compromised. I am committed to that most essential of constitutional imperatives.”

W

hen Cafe Marc Aurel closed in mid-May, the terror was palpable in the MauiTime editorial office.

We survive on coffee and Marc Aurel was our lifeline. Thankfully, Megan Childers and her business partner, Jackie Goring, opened Wailuku Coffee Company in the location at 26 N. Market Street. Childers is no newcomer to coffeehouse culture; she opened her first cafe (a drivethrough) in Washington when she was 17.

Jen Russo: How do you make the perfect espresso?

Megan Childers: It starts with fresh beans, and we have a special grinder that works the beans into a fine ground without bean shock.

Tamp the grind into the portafilter and you have to have 220-degree water to make the perfect espresso. The perfect espresso has 5 millimeters of crema, and takes about 18 to 22 seconds to pour.

JR: Um, bean shock?

MC: Yeah, you have to be careful with the grinding process. Ordinary grinders can heat up the beans with friction as they break down the beans into the ground product. The heat changes the flavor of the coffee, and not in a good way.

JR: Where do you get your coffee?

MC: Maui Oma Coffee Roasting Co. They get green coffee beans from all over the world and they roast them here.

JR: Do you have Maui or Hawaii coffee for sale?

MC: Not now, but we are planning to have some Maui and Kauai coffee in the future. We plan to harvest our own fields in Kipahulu of “Kanaka Kope” this year too. These plants have been growing on my

fiance’s family land since the 1800s. It’s a huge undertaking. It takes 13 pounds of coffee cherry to make one pound of coffee.

We’re anticipate getting about four pounds

from these trees. And we will be harvesting ourselves, once a week for six weeks.

JR: Wow, I want to taste that coffee. What’s the worst cup of coffee you’ve ever had?

MC: Kopi luwak. Marc Aurel had a bag of it and made me a cup. It’s really gourmet expensive stuff where the luwak [a small Asian mammal] eats the coffee cherry and poops out the bean that is roasted.

JR: What’s the most popular coffee at Wailuku Coffee Company?

MC: French roast. People love it, they’re very comfortable with the French roast and ours is really good. It’s a longer, darker roast. Most people don’t know that the darker roasts have less caffeine because the beans have been roasted longer. The closer to raw the bean is, the more the caffeine. The lighter roasts are stronger. It’s confusing.

JR: Your iced toddy coffee is incredible.

What’s the secret?

MC: Toddy is the way you brew it. It’s a cold water extraction. We put five pounds of ground coffee in a filtering bag and put in a vat of water for 24 hours. From this we have a concentrate that is diluted in pitchers. You can actually buy the toddy concentrate for $14 a pitcher here and keep it in your fridge. It should last you about a month. The cold water process makes coffee with no bitterness, no acidity; it’s easy on sensitive stomachs. You can also order a hot toddy, and we will heat that

Starts with egg, cheddar and tomato, your choice of bacon, ham or turkey, and you can put it on croissant, bread or bagel for $5. At lunch we have this soup in a fresh-baked bread bowl that is ridiculously good for $6.50. It takes a little longer because we literally bake the bread after you order it. We considered pre-baking the bread before lunch but we decided not to compromise; it’s worth the wait.

Right now we’re serving clam chowder or minestrone in it.

JR: I’ve heard of “foam art.” What exactly is that?

MC: Milk foam is created with steam. I can hear it whizzing around in the milk and I know I’ve got good foam. You have to be careful with nonfat and soy, those make more

JR: What makes your coffee shop unique?

MC: Well, besides being the only coffee shop in Wailuku, we’re just trying to be a great coffee destination. We want to cater to both sides of the coffee drinker, those that need to get something quick and and those that want to just hang out and leisurely enjoy their coffee. I pride myself on being friendly to everyone who walks through that door, whether I see you everyday or if this is your first time here. ‘Wedding’ Days Can a spirited musical rom com win over our hardened-before-her-time critic?

I

t may not be the way of reviewers to reveal their biases, but I’d better: I hate romantic comedies. I’ve seen the film version of The Wedding Singer starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore a time or two, but only because I was on a plane or had lost the remote to Urijah Faber’s cleft chin while channel surfing between UFC fights. That said, I do love the ‘80s, and moreover, love the Iao Theater.

Sure it’s no Broadway, but the venue’s musty charm alone can only inspire greatness (Frank Sinatra himself performed there, after all).

Maui OnStage, the stewards of the theater, have been upping the ante with every new undertaking, and the musical rendition of The Wedding Singer is no exception. It’s the last show of the 2009-’10 season, so local theater buffs won’t want to miss it.

If you’re expecting merely a live-action version of the movie, well, it is—but it isn’t. The characters are the same—as is the storyline—but it’s, like, totally a musical. The opening number highlights the cast’s choral qualities and boisterous dance numbers are wonderfully choreographed (keep your eye out for “the groom,” my favorite of the dancers) by the New York know-how of Mauian Alexander Cardinalli.

Cardinalli works blocking magic to wield the large troupe through impressive moves on the small stage, making full use of the cleverest of the production’s elements—a large set piece at center stage, tiered like a wedding cake. A collaborative concept with an original design by Caro Walker, it’s an element that makes evident the production’s well-thought-out efforts.

Directed by Lisa Teichner, this colorful adaptation will transport you to Richfield, New Jersey circa 1985 (though done in a way that could be Anywhere, USA). Some concepts are boiled down to song and dance,

like a monologue performed by Casey Murphy, playing Robbie’s (Sandler’s character) evil ex, Linda. During rehearsals, Murphy’s execution was near perfect, and her self-styled choreography elicits red-faced roars from even the cast members. Her performance alone is worth the ticket and your time.

Lead actors Mark Bolden (Robbie) and Jaqui Sherwood (Julia, Barrymore’s character) look a bit like the kind of folks you might find employed by Disneyland, portraying princes and princesses for pictures and in parades. And I mean that in the best way. They both have classic good looks that meld well together, and their characters

are made their own, as opposed to mere imitations of their silver screen counterparts.

That said, Bolden—for a lead—is a bit one-note. In the aftermath of Linda standing him up at the altar, I just don’t feel his pain.

It’s such a turning point for this character, that as an audience member, I need to know his grief. Meanwhile, Kalani Whitford as George and Monica Barnas as Holly steal the spotlight. Too, Charles Cook as Glen Gulia— Julia’s sleazy junk-bond trader boyfriend— has his moments, but his apparent real-life nice guy-ness translates to the stage in a way that takes away from the role. Maybe it’s the romance-hater in me, but I want more of melancholy. It’s the yin to the yang of funny!

But if theater is hard, then local theater is harder—and the cast and crew are passionately brewing up a show that will be enjoyed by those young and old. All the music is performed live under the direction of Vania Jerome, who sits at keys, which adds a touch of class to any ‘80s cheese. But cheesiness with The Wedding Singer is part of the point. The main point, though is that we’re lucky to have such charismatic actors and committed crews that can put together shows like these. Lesser Evil Kids (and adults) deserve better than this disposable dreck Despicable Me

teve Carrell voices Gru, a supervillain who looks like a cross between Blofeld from the 007 movies and Uncle Fester from the Chester Gould Addams Family cartoons. Gru has spent his entire life committing crimes both small and epic and enjoys being single, wealthy and oh-so-evil. Until, that is, he takes in three adorable orphans as part of his latest plot and is thrown for a loop. The little rascals are supposed to melt Gru’s heart—and ours—but the whole setup is so poorly executed and contrived it’s impossible to invest emotion in it; or, for that matter, anything else on screen.

Carrell’s Gru is as ill-defined as the rest of the characters and his decision to play him with an unconvincing Russian accent was a mistake. You won’t believe his conversion from diabolical baddie to caring foster dad because no effort has been made to make

him relatable or to create an interesting story around him. The script is actually pretty mean-spirited, and many scenes seem stolen directly from other, better animated films.

Meanwhile, Gru’s many minions, which resemble Corn Pops with glasses and

mumble incoherently, are the focus of many scenes (you’ll recognize them from the ubiquitous trailers) but fail to deliver much comic zing. The bouncy music, fart jokes and nonstop fall-down-go-boom sight gags work hard to make you think you’re watching a

comedy; all that’s missing are the laughs. OK, to be fair, kids may giggle. But this is one of those movies they’ll revisit in a few years, only to find their nostalgia lied to them.

The 3-D effects are very good, with lots of things flying into your face and a visually thrilling scene set on a roller coaster. It’s by far the best thing about the movie, which is a bad sign.

In addition to Carrell, Julie Andrews, Kristen Wiig, Jason Segal and other notable actors provide voices for throwaway characters. The filmmakers should have saved their money and hired unknowns or reliable character actors, like Pixar usually does. Speaking of which, the wonderful Toy Story 3 is still playing. You’d be much better served seeing that one again rather than wasting your time on this. It’s not a despicable movie, exactly—it’s too innocuous and forgettable for that. THE KARATE KID - PG - Action, Drama - Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith take over for Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio in yet another ‘80s remake/reboot that’s not as sacrilegious as fans of the fun but overrated original would have you believe. 140 min.

KNIGHT AND DAY - PG13 - Action - Tom Cruise, his manic desperation ripping through the coolguy facade, fights desperately to keep being a movie star. That’s not the plot of the movie, but it’s more interesting. 124 min.

PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME - PG13 - Fantasy, Action - Films based on video games don’t exactly have a sterling track record, but this should at least please FX-obsessed teens and anyone interested in ogling a bronzed, beefed-up Jake Gyllenhaal. 116 min.

THE LAST AIRBENDER (3D) - Fantasy - M. Night Shyamalan directs this epic about a young man who rises to meet his destiny and fight off an invading horde of supernatural baddies before Haley Joel Osment shows up and reveals he’s been a ghost all along. 103 min.

TOY STORY 3 (3D) - G - Family, Animated - The latest from the wizards at Pixar has Buzz, Woody and the gang trying to survive life at a daycare center, which is like Hostel for toys. 124 min.

If you’ve got the gams, there are never enough opportunities to wear corsets and thigh-highs in public. Thank goodness Ambrosia is hosting a party celebrating the spirit of Moulin Rouge. Not only would it be appropriate—nay, encouraged—to wear a corset to such an event, a cool-enough ensemble (or, perhaps, the lack thereof) could be rewarded with prizes during the event’s costume contest. So don’t hold back your can-can creative when dressing up for this night of sultry Parisian stylie. Twisting the tunes is DJ Del Sol, who lights up the night long after the sun has gone down. For any wild wahine with a six-string soul, to be called “one mean bitch guitar player” by Keith Richards himself ought to give you enough energy to power an amp. For blues musician Nicole Fournier, it was indeed powerful encouragement, but with or without a Rolling Stone’s stamp of approval, she’s a fret force to be reckoned with. In 1992—the same year she both jammed with and earned the accolades of Richards—she was nominated for Best Female Vocalist at the Bay Area Blues Awards and sat in with John Lee Hooker for a sold-out Seattle show. From there, she’s strung up a hearty list of honors—like multiple nominations for Best Electric Guitar and Best Female Vocalist from the Washington Blues Society, and being named “Tacoma Blueswoman of the Year” in 1996—and has played with the likes of Big Bones, Deacon Jones and Harvey Mandel. This weekend, she’ll add Maui’s own The Vince Esquire Band to the list of notable collaborators, and will show audiences what that Keith Richards guy was raving about.

ike any little kid worth the dirt under her fingernails, I once commanded a fort. By no means was it a fortress, but it did the trick (for a girl). Sawdusty and sun-filled, it was a place to make private recordation of my observations—in pink composition tablets with Little Mermaid-printed pencils—and a place to concoct my intruderthwarting “poisons,” from ditch weeds I’d mashed into pulp. What else do you do in a fort?

Raw lattice walls let the light in, as did the roof that grew of frail ilima blooms and rattling Chinese Lantern pods. The openness afforded a clear view of oncoming attack from any angle (not that it ever came), and a scenic lookout to the banana and soybean patches that—with great parental pains—sloped down the western end of the dusty lot. I felt I had everything I needed at hand, and naught but family and best friends were allowed entry. Though my poptop jam jar lid “doorbell” was too clever to abandon (I thought), no one seemed inclined to use it when the door was only a fabric flap.

t that time, I had not long been a Kula kid. Truth be told, I was born in Haiku and our ‘ohana had then only recently made the Upcountry move from Waikapu. From off Honoapiilani, any beach seems spitting distance and trips were regularly made during a time when Redondos could still be bought from the now-no-mo’ Maalaea Store. On weekends, my parents had to all but tie a rope to me so as to ensure their buoyant, brown waterbaby would not plain swim away to a tako’s garden, and so my toddlerdom was spent in the shore break and just beyond.

That all changed when we moved to Kula, midway through Kindergarten. The pastureland became my new undulating expanse, and though it was impossibly dry, it did more than suffice. I learned soil could be as fruitful as the sea, but learned too that to reap of it took the toil of elbows and grease and plenty of water.

So, practical as he is, Dad would siphon the laundry run-off to the banana grove. Over time, it tore a nice foot-wide groove into the dry

thirsty auburn earth—a stream of sorts. Rapids white with detergent, it was a worthy spectacle on laundry days, and so I would spend my afternoons “fishing.”

This meant filling balloons (preferably pink, if such things could be helped) only slightly, so that you’d have an itty-bitty fish body that tied off to a tail. Once I’d launch a small school from the ply-board landing off my fort, I’d hastily thump my fat flat feet down toward the bananas, ready to scoop my loot up in a burgundy net—a net that was progressively less-used as I saw more cabbage than coral.

egardless of where you play, inevitably, interest in such silly games are as quick to shrivel as a worm without wet.

Forts are left to ruin and poisons are no longer faux (not to mention, purposefully imbibed). Open doors are locked, sunshine is blocked and composition tablets are filled more with dissection than acceptation.

But such sorrowful things are all good and well because they’re as natural as the cycle of seasons.

A little darkness is OK sometimes, if afterward it makes the sunshine brighter and elbow grease seem worthwhile. Soon enough, it all comes round again, when forts become houses, best friends become lovers and families and you still must get creative to catch your dinner. ■

Disempowered groups have been reclaiming and adopting defamatory language for a long time, but it can work on a personal level as well. Whatever’s been hurting you is something you can learn to own and accept about yourself. In this case, it might be something you can ultimately change—but only once you’ve acknowledged the accuracy of those unkind words.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) What do you do when someone’s attempts to help go wildly awry, and end up creating extra problems and complications that would never have happened, had they simply left the situation alone? Their heart was in the right place, after all. But now there’s a mess to clean up. It’s up to you to decide whether good intentions are enough. I’d suggest erring on the side of generosity, compassion, and tolerance. It’s okay to give someone enough information to realize the mess they’ve made, if they’re still clueless about it, but try not to stack it with a guilt trip, if you can.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Progress frequently happens in fits and starts, and it’s often of the “two steps forward, one back” variety. Don’t be discouraged by this, even in your own personal evolution. Obviously, too much negative movement wouldn’t be a good thing, but acknowledge that there’s a certain dance going on here as you adjust to your newer way of being. Focus on the positive progress, and forgive the occasional reversions back to old habits, without dwelling too much on them. Being too rigid about your own growth will not only make you miserable, it’s likely to stagnate it entirely. Just recognize the waltz, and be satisfied that you’re moving more or less in the right direction, albeit, perhaps, in a roundabout fashion.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) There’s no one wiser, deeper, and more amazing than a Scorpio who’s had a chance to really evolve (a process which usually takes several decades or more). Of course, the inverse is also true—there’s no one more likely to be cruel, make devastating mistakes, or just really screw up a situation than an “unripe” Scorpio. Of course, that’s exactly what makes you so wonderful once you’ve circled the block a few dozen times. If you’re still in the process of “ripening,” that is, still prone to occasionally be cruel, or screw up horribly, recognize that it’s precisely these things that will make you so wise and wonderful late in life, and forgive yourself.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Taking a step or two back is better than walking away. Sometimes those are your only options. You can’t sustain things at the level you have been, so you essentially have two choices: keep trying anyway, until you burn out completely and have nothing left to offer, and consequently need to just walk away, or reducing your involvement for a while, so you can rest, recharge, and consider how to make the situation a sustainable and happy one. I think the latter option is better, since it doesn’t spell the end of what could be a productive and fulfilling chapter—but it’s on you to make it possible.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Persistence is one of your best traits. It’s often negatively labeled as obsession or stubbornness, and of course it can be, like any strength, a weakness. Usually, though, it serves you well, and the current scenario could definitely benefit from its application. Don’t let others discourage you with their wish that you’d give up more easily or their denigrations of your “obsession.” Only through extreme perseverance will you achieve anything like what you’re hoping for. This, you have in spades—so don’t let others’ attempts to dissuade or distract you from your course actually keep you from pursuing it.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) When someone you love needs more from you than they usually do, it can suck. Suddenly, you must make sacrifices that aren’t particularly fair; however, the alternative—leaving them in the lurch—would probably make you feel worse. We always have choices, but sometimes the choices simply suck. It’s your job to choose the “best” one of those and focus on its positive aspects. It’ll probably be difficult to stay cheery in this situation; nevertheless, that’s this week’s challenge. The better you get at it, the less miserable the situation will be for all concerned—including you.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) There are times when being mysterious or coy will serve you well; however, sometimes that behavior’s just likely to piss or put people off. Being upfront and completely transparent and open isn’t a strength of yours; nevertheless, it’s a quality you should strive to exemplify this week. To you, this might seem like you’re being rude, egotistical or arrogant, or just plain annoying—nevertheless, if the stuff you’re putting out there is genuine and honest, it’s exactly right. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) When you discover something (or someone) new that you like, you sometimes go a bit overboard about it. The usual pattern is that you go full-throttle for a while, then lose most of your interest when a new obsession takes hold. This is confusing for those around you. As you get older, I hope you don’t lose your enthusiasm; however, it’d be nice if you developed a little more follow-through. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get completely carried away with whatever new thing has excited you—just that maybe you shouldn’t go out of your way to discover quite as many new things—thereby giving yourself the opportunity to explore some of this stuff in more depth. That, my dear, is what you should concentrate on this week.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Splitting loyalties doesn’t really work. Eventually—probably later rather than sooner, but still—both parties will make incompatible demands on you, and you’ll be forced to choose. You should decide now what you’d do in such a scenario, rather than waiting until that time (and foolishly hoping it never happens). Once you’ve figured it out, you need to tell everyone involved where they’re at. They deserve to know. You probably don’t want to, because it will hurt your own status with whoever’s lower on the priority list—but that doesn’t change that it’s the right thing to do.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You may not be susceptible to the kind of rage an Aries can muster, or the cold smolder of seething fury a Scorpio can maintain for years, but your short-fused anger can still be rather explosive and unpredictable. One Gemini friend of mine smashed in a car window of a car whose alarm would go off for hours every Saturday morning. This is a force you need to learn to control, and occasionally harness. It’s powerful, and better expressed than suppressed, but obviously, letting it run wild can have annoying and negative ramifications.
