During a May 11 meeting of the House Committee on COVID-19, House Speaker Scott Saiki (D-Kaka‘ako), Bank of Hawai‘i president Peter Ho, and HIEMA director Kenneth Hara, lamented a lack of leadership from the governor and stressed the importance of defining the metrics that will be used to determine which businesses can reopen, and when.

If rules are too lenient, Hara said, the state runs the risk of a second wave of infection and business closures, and thus a stunted economic recovery. On the other hand, “If we let the economy go the way it’s going, I feel there’ll be significant civil unrest that could lead to civil disobedience and, worst case, civil disturbance and rioting,” said Hara, adding that he hoped to get past this “friction point” to arrive at solid public guidance on when and how to move from one COVID-19 threat level to the next.

hile retail stores across the county now have the go-ahead to reopen, state leaders remain in discussions about the best way to proceed with lifting further COVID-19 public health restrictions. For weeks the state has reported low daily numbers of new cases of infection consistent with a “flattened curve,” meaning the spread of COVID-19 has been slowed, which is the goal of social distancing and stayat-home rules.

On May 8, for the first time since mid-March, the Department of Health reported a “lull” of no new cases in the state. Since then, as of press time, the state has found no more than three new cases a day. But, warned Governor Ige, “We’ll lose all of our progress and the sacrifices you’ve all made if we see a surge in COVID-19 cases. All of your work will have been meaningless.”

Like decision-makers around the globe, Ige is faced with the task of balancing the risk of COVID-19 infections with the need to resuscitate an economy that has screeched to a halt and left many out of work.

“People need to go back to work.

Businesses need to start up again,” said Ige during a May 11 press conference.

“We need to move forward and we are taking these first important steps, but please remember this will be a careful process. Your health is our highest priority as we make these decisions, and if we see a recurrence of COVID-19 we may need to put some restrictions back in place.”

Between the governor, state Department of Health, Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency, and the state House Committee on COVID-19, however, there is not yet a consensus on how to best make decisions of when to lift or increase restrictions.

specific metrics that should be included at each level to dictate that decision,” said Saiki. “We cannot continue to just put this off because of the internal disagreements that are happening.”

Saiki suggested inviting the governor to a future video meeting so the committee could impress upon the governor “the need for him to basically start making decisions and to provide direction on this.”

“We’re dealing with days not weeks, and certainly not months. If we don’t demonstrate leadership to our community we’re really leaving them

regarding flexibility of these metrics.

“I think the disagreement just circles around what specific metrics would be considered [to allow for lifting or adding restrictions] and whether there should be a hard and fast objective rule or whether there should be discretion involved, and I advocate for discretion,” said Gov. Ige during the May 11 press conference.

Carl Bonham, the executive director of the University of Hawai‘i Economic Research Organization, told the House Committee on COVID-19 that while it’s obvious that the state needs to get its

QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENT On May 1, officials in San Diego County ordered residents to start wearing face coverings while in public to prevent the spread of COVID-19. On May 2, an unnamed man went grocery shopping at Vons in Santee, California, where a number of shoppers took photos of the man, wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood. Staff members repeatedly asked him to remove the hood, according to a company spokeswoman, but he refused until he reached the checkout area, where a supervisor caught up to him. The man removed the hood, paid for his groceries, and left. Santee Mayor John Minto told the Los Angeles Times, “Santee, its leaders and I will not tolerate such behavior.”

CREATIVE QUARANTINE Discovery Island at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, has been closed to the public since 1999, and, of course, the park itself has been closed since mid-March because of coronavirus concerns. Once called Treasure Island, the 11-acre property sits in the park’s Bay Lake and was a pure “tropical paradise” for an unnamed interloper from Alabama, who was found camping on the island on April 30 by park security. NPR reported the 42-year-old man told Orange County Sheriff’s deputies he was planning to stay about a week and was unaware he was doing anything wrong, despite numerous “no trespassing” signs and calls from authorities over loudspeakers. Nevertheless, he was charged with trespassing and was banned from all Disney properties.

FLORIDA Two landscapers were charged with DUIs for driving the same vehicle at the same time in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, after police pulled over an SUV that had been reported to be driving recklessly on April 15. According to police reports, the officers spotted Alfredo Lopez Chaj, 24, behind the wheel, but by the time an officer approached the car, Chaj was standing outside it, and Martin Lopez Chaj, 20, was in the driver’s seat. The younger man, apparently a brother, had slid over from the passenger seat, put the car in gear and tried to escape, but the officer pulled him out of the car, The Palm Beach Post reported. Both men, police noted, smelled of alcohol, and both had wet their pants; neither had a valid driver’s license.

PRECOCIOUS A Utah Highway Patrol officer pulled over a car in Weber County on May 4 for “what he thought was an impaired driver,” the highway patrol said on Twitter, but instead he was shocked to find a 5-year-old in the driver’s seat. The boy told the trooper he took

off in his parents’ car after arguing with his mother because she wouldn’t buy him a Lamborghini, according to United Press International. He planned to drive to California to get one for himself, but alas, “he only had $3 his wallet,” the highway patrol noted.

ANIMAL ANTICS A monkey riding a small motorized bicycle in a street performance in Surabaya, Indonesia, on May 2, threw down the bike and suddenly grabbed a toddler who was watching, Global News reported, dragging the child down the cobblestone street for several feet before letting him go. The boy was scratched but not seriously injured.

WAIT, WHAT? Katrina Morgan, 50, called 911 on May 2 in Port Clinton, Ohio, asking for the fire department because, “I need somebody to come put it out with their hose,” according to police reports. “It” was her crotch, she told the dispatcher, and it was on fire. The News Herald reported that police responding to her call arrested Morgan for making false reports and disrupting public services, and found empty bottles of alcohol in the house. Other people at the home admitted they’d been drinking but said they didn’t see her using the telephone.

BAD SQUIRREL! An advertisement for a deodorant that aired during “Britain’s Got Talent” on May 2 caused a backlash among viewers who were shocked to see the ad conclude with a squirrel “getting it on” with a can of the deodorant, as one angry viewer put it. “We are watching this as a family,” wrote one complainant, according to The Independent, while others noted the ad celebrating Lynx Africa’s 25th anniversary was “inappropriately scheduled” and “unsuitable for children.” The Advertising Standards Authority received 155 complaints about the ad, but said, “No decision has been made on whether there are grounds for an investigation.”

STORYTIME Nursery school teacher Eloise Roberts, 32, has been making videos for her students during the coronavirus lockdown, and recently decided to take advantage of a lovely spring day to record a story about unicorns at the horse riding school in Moreton, Merseyside, England, where she lives. What she didn’t expect was the springtime friskiness of the horses in the background. “I could hear that the horses were up to something behind me,” Roberts told the Daily Mail, so she turned around to discover the more compelling story happening behind her, and quickly moved to another field.

A Time to Reconnect

Forest bathing offers a way to de-stress during a pandemic

A

few weeks ago I went to brunch with friends and was invited to sign up for a free “green walk forest bathing experience” at the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens.

It sounded interesting. What is forest bathing?

I wondered. I didn’t even know we had a botanical garden in Kahului! I put my name in as soon as I found out it would be at the old Maui Zoo location. I was so curious! With a name like “forest bathing,” how could it not be fun?

I teach group classes like yoga, spinning, and all things fitness, but I still get intimidated to try things outside of my comfort zone. But I was excited at the same time. Am I gonna be good at this? Do I have to partner up with people? Do I swim in the leaves and paint myself with flowers?

One humbling experience a day is good for the soul, I believe, so I went for it.

The morning of the event I found myself getting more excited. I parked my car and walked into the gardens, and was brought right back to my childhood at the zoo... minus the animals. I walked up to the check-in desk and was greeted by the friendly staff.

I was ready for a forest bath.

Phyllis Look of Forest Bathing Hawai‘i was our guide. She has a calming and passionate energy about her and happens to be Hawai‘i’s first certified forest therapy guide. There were about 25 of us, and she gathered us together to explain the concept behind forest bathing.

It’s a nature therapy called shinrin-yoku that started in Japan (shinrin means forest and yoku means bath).

Shinrin-yoku is a wellness practice that serves the natural world and brings individual awareness to it. I felt intrigued and immediately comforted, like I was giving my soul a gift – but I wasn't the only one receiving. I was also giving back to nature by respecting and honoring it.

We started our forest bathing journey with an exercise in stilling our minds and opening up our senses. We walked to an open space and found a place to sit or lay comfortably, closed our eyes, and just listened. I could hear the birds while feeling the Earth beneath me and breathing in the freshness of the trees and open sky.

The goal was to be completely present in the space between thoughts. I practice guided meditations daily but this felt new.

I took it all in and just simply was,

and it felt safe and pure. This "first invitation," as Phyllis called it, had me feeling pure joy just to be exactly where I was.

The next exercise was all about slowing down and observing while making our way to a destination. The goal was not far at all, and I probably could have gotten there in three minutes if my focus had been on arriving, but this second invitation was about the journey, the slow down. This next exercise in mindfulness took us 20 minutes, during which I was mindful of every step I took. I observed the trees, the leaves, the patterns the leaves weaved, the roots. I watched butterflies and bees, and at one point I thought I could feel the Earth rotating beneath my feet. I moved like a sloth and observed everything. It’s so easy to look, yet not really see, when we are always rushing to the next destination. There is breathtaking beauty when we just stop, let our thoughts subside, and simply observe.

Our next 20-minute invitation was to make friends with a tree in the garden and observe it. In a botanical garden it’s so hard to choose just one, so I let a tree choose me. I used what I learned from the previous invitation and took my time, and found my way to a beautiful tree whose roots were weaved through a fence. It looked like art. I talk to my plants everyday at home, so it wasn’t hard for me to make friends with this pretty work of nature. I have always felt like all living things need love, so I gave the tree some of mine.

Phyllis had us pick quotes and she asked us to read it to our tree when we made friends.

I love quotes and trees, so this was fun. The challenge for me, though, was that I wanted to pick up my phone and take a picture and (naturally in this day and age) post to social media. It was another lesson, one that came to fruition by just moving through these invitations.

Our final invitation was to taste a piece of steamed local kalo, or taro. Phyllis told us the Hawaiian story of the plant. The Hawaiian people have a deep and profound appreciation for the ‘aina, the land. Their roots trace back to the story of creation in which kalo is family.

In this invitation we were absorbed in letting our taste buds enjoy the kalo, but for me it was more than that.

It was acknowledging that this was a connection to nature, to the land, and honoring the ancestors that were here long before. It was pure appreciation for the traditions and stories passed down through generations that keep us connected to our roots and culture.

The whole forest bathing experience wasn’t a workout. I didn’t break a sweat.

It was a work-in. It was soul-fulfilling. It’s about patience and the joy of connecting with something greater than ourselves, Phyllis said; it’s a way to de-stress and embrace the pause, to be able to come back and find creativity and inspiration.

I received all of these things from my experience and more. I hope I was able to give some of it back to nature as well, to give my gratitude and love for the natural world and myself. I was replenishing my soul.

It’s a wonderful time to explore this concept of forest bathing as we self-isolate during this pandemic. Use this time of social distancing to be gentle with yourself and connect with nature.

Here are some ways to connect with nature during this time: · Step outside in nature. It doesn’t have to be in a forest or jungle. It can simply be in your yard. Anywhere you can open up your senses and quiet your mind. · Set a timer for 20 minutes. It may feel like forever, but at the end of the 20 minutes you’ll begin to settle in. · Really look. If you’re in your yard, find a plant, a flower, a blade of grass… and really look at it. Look at its curves and edges and fine print. What do you see when you really take a closer look? · Feel more and think less. Get out of your head. We’re human so thoughts will arise and that’s OK. Let them come in, let them flow out, and let your focus be on the present moment. A good tip that I use while meditating is to bring awareness to your breath. When you are aware of your breath, you are present. When you are grateful, you are present. · Not naming, just knowing. Take the biology out of it and see something for what it is. · Go slow. Sometimes we get so caught up on the next thing and the next and the next, that we don’t get to fully appreciate where we are. Slow down, be here, in this moment.

No rush. · If you’re with a friend, try not to talk.

Let nature do the talking. · Put away your phone and be present.

Barry's Streaming Cinema Time on your hands? Make it a priority to watch one of the “greatest movies ever made” Cinema Paradiso ★★★★★ Rated R/123 Min.

T

he first time I saw Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso, it was in the Seabury Hall chapel (which is now their library). This was in 1990, a one-night-only event that my mother (who worked there at the time) got me into. It felt odd at first, as we were ushered into this cavernous space (the kind of room seemingly ideal for dance rehearsal), onto bleacher seats. A screen was set up, bags of popcorn were handed out, and I sat with my mother and one of my grade-school buddies. I was 13 at the time, unaware that this film – the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film – was going to be one of the great moviegoing experiences of my life. There’s a magic to it, a knowledge of how movies can transport us to certain moments in our lives, as well as feelings that have been dormant, tucked away within us. Movies can be escapist fantasies or bittersweet and harsh. Cinema Paradiso is all of those things.

We meet Salvatore (played by Jacques Perrin), a successful filmmaker who is haunted by the past he left behind; Salvatore hasn’t returned to the Italian village of his birth since he left as a teenager. As he makes his way back, we watch the childhood that shaped Salvatore’s life, in which he went by the name of Toto (played by a vibrant Salvatore Cascio). At the age of 11, little Toto is constantly getting in trouble, while his mother struggles to discipline him.

Toto forms an unexpected friendship with Alfredo (a fantastic Phillipe Noiret), a projectionist at the local movie house.

The two find escape in their father-son bond and their occupation of sharing the escapism of movies with their town folk.

Guided by Tornatore’s skillful direction, some charming lead performances, and a magnificent, emotionally rich score

by Ennio Morricone, Cinema Paradiso will leave you enraptured and giddy. There’s so much joy and honesty here, moments of heartbreak and hilarity that come colliding together.

Tornatore’s film is a special one in Italian cinema: There is a sentimental quality here that you’d never find in, say, the erotic/political works of Bernardo Bertolucci or the landmark works of Roberto Rossellini or Pier Pasolini. Yet, as in the impactful, early examples of Italian neorealism (namely, The Bicycle Thief), the bond between a boy and his adult guardian is portrayed in a manner that is never maudlin.

Cinephiles are aware that there is the theatrical version and a much-longer director’s cut (both are available on

Amazon Prime). I strongly recommend the former and only suggest the latter if you liked it the first time and have too many unanswered questions about the third act.

The original theatrical version (which was the first I encountered) is perfect, giving each subplot and character the appropriate amount of time to develop. The extended version is overlong and overstuffed, giving too much emphasis to a plot line that was better left ambiguous.

Fans of Cinema Paradiso often say it’s one of the best movies about movies themselves. I’ll take it a step further: This is among the greatest movies ever made.

If you’ve never seen it, make it a priority.

(On Amazon Prime) For Suspense Fans: Most only know Steve Guttenberg from his starring roles in ‘80s movies like Three Men and a Baby, Cocoon, and the Police Academy series, where he played affable, charming leading men. He once tried to break-out and do a full-blown thriller, The Bedroom Window (1987). The film never caught on, but it’s a great little sleeper, obviously inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window.

Guttenberg is solid playing Terry, a fake witness to a murder (he’s filling in for his mistress, played by Isabelle Huppert, who won’t admit to witnessing the crime). Another witness, played by a pre“Downton Abbey” Elizabeth McGovern, is onto Terry and aware of the real danger still out there. Directed by Curtis Hanson, back when he was doing top-notch popcorn thrillers like this and The Hand that Rocks the Cradle and The River Wild (he later hit the big leagues with L.A. Confidential and 8 Mile), it’s been out of print for a while and worth rediscovering. (On Amazon Prime and Kanopy) For Keiki and the Young at Heart: The Rescuers Down Under (1990) is one of those forgotten Disney semi-classics that everyone remembers but few have seen or given a second thought since the ‘90s. It was released in between The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, becoming a footnote during that rich age of the Disney Animation Renaissance. While a sequel to the bland 1977 The Rescuers, it’s a standalone movie, in which two mice who are top Rescue Aid Society agents are sent to Australia to save an eagle and a young girl in distress. Anchored by great vocal turns (Bob Newhart and Ava Gabor are wonderful as the protagonists, John Candy provides boisterous comic relief, and George C. Scott makes a fantastic villain) and gorgeous animation, this blends CGI and hand-drawn animation. The action sequences are startlingly good, making for a charming, often thrilling, and, at 77 minutes, brisk entertainment for the whole family.
