Let the Sun Shine In Sun Shine

Somewhere along the path of parenthood, between drop-off and pick-up, making meals, and cleaning constantly, joy can get pushed off to the side. It’s not just the big, inyour-face kind of joy that falls away; even the simple pleasures can get lost in the never-ending sameness of one day after the next.

If you find yourself at a loss for where to look for joy, or if joy feels like a stretch, to simply lift your mood even a little, start incorporating these habits into your daily routine. Your kids might even want to join you!

Get curious

Pick a color, texture, scent, or sound at the beginning of the day. Whenever you see, hear, or smell that thing, give someone a high five, do a happy dance, or simply say to yourself, “There it is!” Curiosity is one of a suite of emotions that, when practiced over time, can lift our mood and keep us engaged in our lives.

Get moving

Before you insist that you don’t have time to exercise, consider that any movement counts. Although longer rounds of exercise are needed to make the most of endorphins, even short bursts of dancing, walking around the block, or jumping in the ocean can help you shift your mood and feel more uplifted.

Connect

Make an effort to connect with other parents at pick-up or while waiting for the kids to be done with sports or other hobbies. It’s tempting to sit in the car and scroll through social media, but having face-to-face social interactions will go a long way to combat the loneliness that can surface when you’re running from one thing to the next all day.

Let laughter in

Make it a point to bring more laughter into your daily routine. Depending on the age of your kids, you might consider starting a joke of the day (or week) routine; everyone finds a joke, and whoever’s joke gets the most laughs gets to choose dessert or some other fun prize.

Watch your sweets

Added sugars can be found hiding in so many processed foods, not just in the ones you typically think of as sweets. Sugar can wreak havoc on your mood by spiking your blood sugar, which is then followed by a crash. As your blood sugar drops, so does your mood. Create stability in your mood by focusing on a well-rounded diet of whole foods, prioritizing fruits and vegetables whenever possible. Kalia Kelmenson helps women remember their spark and strength and reclaim adventure as a way of life. You can find her at mauimindandbody.com and follow her at instagram.com/thesaltinus .

UVSC’s Trucker Dukes Memorial Dive & Invasive Roundup Supports Families Fighting Cancer

On Saturday, July 19, 2025, divers, families, and supporters will gather at the Rinzai Zen Mission at Baldwin Beach, Maui, for the 3rd Annual Trucker Dukes Memorial Dive Tournament Invasive Roundup, a unique fundraising event that combines community, conservation, and compassion. Organized by local nonprofit organization UVSC (which stands for Us Vs. Cancer), this tournament raises critical funds to assist families battling cancer while honoring the memory of Trucker Dukes, the first hero and beneficiary of UVSC’s Financial Assistance Program, whose courageous fight continues to inspire hope.

At the heart of the event is a spearfishing tournament aimed at removing harmful invasive fish that threaten Hawai‘i’s reefs - roi, ta‘ape, and to‘au. While divers compete for prizes, they also contribute to a greater cause: preserving the marine ecosystem while supporting families in need.

More Than a Tournament

The Dukes family helps to organize the tournament in partnership with UVSC, and his mother, Shauna Dukes, shares, “Trucker lived a really big little life, and how we perpetuate his life forward into the future is by doing things in his honor. He was too little to spearfish, but he loved doing everything his siblings did, so I know in my heart if he was still with us, he would be following right behind his big brothers and sister in the water. This feels like the perfect way to honor him and raise money for a good cause.”

UVSC provides financial support to families in Hawai'i that are struggling to afford their outof-pocket cancer-related expenses and essential needs. All proceeds raised during this event go directly to helping families in crisis, offering relief during one of life’s toughest battles and most importantly, to ensure that no one faces cancer alone.

How to Participate

Dive tournament age divisions include: 7–10 years old; 11–14 years old; and 15–18 years old (*must have been in high school in 2024–2025). All divers must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited to 50 teams (i.e. 100 divers). Diver check-in opens at 6:30 am, tournament start time is 8 am, and the final weigh-in is at 12 pm with an awards ceremony and prizes to follow. Competitors will vie for prizes in categories such as smallest roi, largest roi, and most overall weight. We’ve added an Open Division for largest roi in Hawai'i (entry via photo submission) so supporters on any island and of all ages can make a positive impact with us.

Register and learn more at uvsc.org. By participating, you’re not just diving—you’re bringing hope to families who need it most.

A Critical Time for Critical Thinking MONTESSORI OF MAUI

Nearly every morning I see something on my computer that I know to be patently false or unconfirmed. Sometimes it’s innocuous enough, other times it’s information that someone is planting into the news cycle as propaganda. This is not new. Going back to ancient Greece, playwrights used theaters to spread falsehoods about controversial celebrities like Socrates and Plato.

Currently, technology and the pace of information exchanges have made it difficult for many to separate facts from opinions. It’s one thing to be a skeptical adult who is never quite sure where one’s information feeds are coming from. It’s quite different if you are a child. Sometimes, our modern information sources may not even be human.

As a school leader, I’m never surprised to hear students say, “Mice love cheese.” But, we can take time out and test this idea. By investigating, we learn that cheese became popular in the Middle Ages due to lack of refrigeration, and mice like anything sweet or salty.

Healthy skepticism is a key element of authentic critical thinking. An additional key element, independent thinking, comes only with practice. Authentic learning comes through trial and error, and the empathic process of “seeing things the way others might.” Da Vinci watched birds for years before he attempted his flying machines, and Ann Tsukamoto’s separation of stem cells was based on her desire to help a friend with cancer.

Many educators agree that critical thinking includes six key elements: observation, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, inference, and problem-solving.

We practice this daily as parents. When our children are babies, we wonder, “Why is she crying?” As the children age, we may ask, “Why

is math easier for my child than spelling?” or “Can I make broccoli more appealing to my son?” Our essential curiosity drives our critical thinking. It’s the problem-solving element that is the most gratifying.

All we need to do to role-model this critical thinking is to articulate to our children that problems are more like puzzles than you think. Sometimes we test our resilience and keep looking for that corner piece that completes the bigger picture.

The challenges we’ll all face in the future will involve smart people collaborating with grace and courtesy, poking holes in each other’s assumptions. We live in a time of coarse discourse. Hackles are up, and the chasm between “us and them” is widening.

In great schools and great families, grace and courtesy are essential in the path toward critical thinking. So, too, is collaboration and intellectual humility. Imagine if more organizations and governments effectively collaborated to solve problems. So as we approach the summer season, as parents, let's embrace serving as examples of critical thinking. Let’s model grace and courtesy, intellectual humility, and collaboration. After all, the young people are watching us!

Keiki Hula Show &

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Over $372,000 Has Been Awarded to Our Graduates

For 57 years the Napili Kai Foundation has strived to preserve the Hawaiian culture by passing it on to Maui’s keiki through the teaching of dances, language, history, arts and crafts of Polynesia. Our keiki perform in the weekly keiki hula show at the Napili Kai Beach Resort and participate in travel every 2-3 years. This program is available free of charge to keiki ages 6-18.

Now offering free ukulele and drumming lessons to our keiki members.

The Foundation is a non-profit, 501 ©(3) organization. Our program emphasizes: mastering of ancient skills, pride in our forebearers and respect for their wisdom, building teamwork and leadership skills.

For membership information contact Kumu Hula Kathy Ralar through our website:

The roots of empathy lie in the foundations of relating—being connected, engaging, reading body language, and adjusting to what we see in another’s emotional affect. So it is these foundation milestones that we need to make robust in our children. The good news is that the most powerful tool we have to build these skills is ourselves, and the venue is all of our interactions with our kids. Here are a few tips on the road to developing your child’s ability to be empathetic:

• Respond to your child’s facial expressions with curiosity and warmth that communicates that you want to connect and understand how they feel

• Verbalize about your own emotions openly, big or small- you are your child’s model

• Help your child see how people act is not due to rules but by how they feel (this may not be how you were raised)

• When your child is having big feelings, respond with words like “I can see how you would feel that way” (even if you do not agree with your child’s behavior)

• Build your child’s emotional vocabulary and use it regularly in your daily experiences

• Talk about the complexity of your own multiple feelings at once—for example excited, nervous, and overwhelmed

Ways to Foster Empathy in Children

• When your child has a behavior you don’t like, connect with them, seek to hear about how they feel, and problem-solve together the ways to cope with their feelings

• Understand that when your child does not empathize with another child, they likely have their own big emotion they are contending with- seek to hear their perspective

• When planning family activities, have everyone say what they are hoping to do- enroll your child to create a plan where everyone’s needs can be met

• Talk a lot about how you are landing for others and how to ‘read the room’

• Notice together other’s emotional ‘signals’ and what to make of them

Your child’s ability to empathize is rooted in their ability to ‘read’ another’s emotions, relate to their emotion by putting themselves in their shoes, and recognize those same feelings in themselves, then seek to connect and comfort the other. Your child can experience empathy by the way you continually seek to “see” and “understand’ their emotional experience through your own warm connection with them.

Clothespins Friends

Summer is just around the corner… which means school will be out, and plenty of little hands will be looking for fun things to do!

This simple craft is perfect for younger kids who will love picking out their favorite colors and materials. Older kids can tackle it on their own, or you can even make these adorable creations as a surprise to take on road trips or give as thoughtful gifts. With a sprinkle of imagination, some basic craft supplies, and maybe a little help from bigger hands, you’ll keep eager minds busy, have tons of fun, and create some new little friends!

P.S. This is also a great group project. It’s amazing to see how each child brings their own unique ideas to life.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

• Clothespins

• Fabric scraps

• Pipe cleaners

• Markers

• Yarn

• Popsicle sticks

• Glue

• Scissors

• Imagination!

Encourage your child to think creatively about what they want to make and to experiment with different materials. Step in to help with cutting, gluing, or holding things in place if needed. Before long, you’ll have a collection of fun, handmade friends ready for playtime adventures!

Baby + Health

The on Pacifiers

Pacifiers can be an amazing tool for our babies, but how do we take advantage of all the benefits of pacifiers while reducing some of the potential negative side effects?

Benefits

Calming effect. Sucking is a natural reflex in babies. The controlled action of sucking on a pacifier promotes a feeling of security and allows babies to self-soothe.

Reduces risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Research indicates that infants put to sleep with a pacifier have a lower incidence of SIDS. The exact mechanism isn’t completely understood, but the pacifier may maintain an open airway during sleep. Prevents thumb sucking. A thumb is always readily accessible and cannot easily be removed. A pacifier gives you more control over when and how the pacifier is used and a more structured weaning process.

Risks & Considerations

Establish breastfeeding first. To avoid nipple confusion, it is recommended to establish breastfeeding well before introducing the pacifier. Germs. Pacifiers can serve as a reservoir for bacteria and other microbes. To mitigate the risk, sterilize and wash pacifiers often.

Increased risk of dental issues. Prolonged pacifier use has the potential to cause dental issues including misaligned teeth and bite problems. The Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children stop the habit by 36 months. The weaning process should be started around 18 months to minimize harmful

effects on teeth. Some pacifiers are better for the teeth than others. Look for ‘orthodontic pacifiers’ with a flatter profile. Also, do not attach heavy stuffed animals to them that could put harmful forces on the palate and teeth.

When & How to Stop

Weaning when your child Is less emotionally attached to the pacifier, can be easier. Ever child is different, but most kids will stop by themselves between the ages of two and four. If this isn’t the case, then there are some gentle motivational strategies:

Make it unappealing. Snip the ends of the pacifier, which changes the suction experience of the pacifier. Some kids will become less interested in sucking on these broken tips and move on.

Break the routine. Kids eat, sleep, play on routine, and like clockwork when they get tired, they reach for the pacifier. Vacations, sleepovers at grandparents, or even starting a new daycare offer natural breaks in the routine. Take advantage of these times and switch up one more variable – the pacifier.

Pacifier fairy. Similar to the tooth fairy, the pacifier fairy exchanges the pacifiers for a special prize. If you would rather not involve fantasy, swap for a longed-for toy or experience. Go cold turkey. Most kids will successfully wean on their own gradually. If gradual doesn’t work, then cold turkey can be the best option– it will likely be a hard few days and nights!

Keep it positive. Positive reinforcement is always preferable to negative reinforcement to avoid power struggles that can extend the duration of the habit.

Summermeans fun -- running outside, going to the beach, and playing sports. But being active also raises the risk of injuries, like broken bones, sprains, and strains.

The good news is that parents, coaches, and caregivers can help keep keiki safe by understanding how injuries happen and taking steps to prevent them.

Elbow, wrist, and ankle fractures are the most common bone breaks in kids, while sprained ankles are the most common soft tissue injuries. These injuries are often caused by falls, such as landing on an outstretched arm or twisting an ankle while running across a playing field.

Certain sports also increase the risk of overuse injuries. These are most common in overhead-throwing sports like baseball, softball, and volleyball, where repetitive motion can lead to stress in the growth plates of a child’s shoulder and elbow. These injuries develop over weeks or months and often go unnoticed until they become serious.

Keep keiki moving and injury-free this summer with a few simple tips:

1. Warm up. Coaches can keep practice sessions safe and help kids develop lifelong healthy habits by teaching proper stretching and gradual muscle activation before activity.

Safety Tips for Summer Sports

2. Use the right equipment. Make sure helmets as well as elbow, wrist, and knee pads fit properly and are worn correctly.

3. Ramp up slowly. Kids may be eager to jump into new sports, but progressing gradually and building strength with conditioning can help prevent stress injuries.

4. Go easy with overhead throwing. Stick to pitch limits and practice cross-training to avoid overuse injuries.

5. Don’t forget hydration and nutrition. Regular water breaks and a balanced diet support muscle recovery and overall health.

Even when you’re being careful, injuries can still happen. Most minor injuries can be treated with first aid. Use the “R.I.C.E.” method: Rest, Ice (apply ice packs for 15-20 minutes at a time), Compress (using elastic bandages), and Elevate (keeping the injured limb above the heart to minimize swelling).

While most summer sports injuries are treatable, they can affect a child’s development if they disrupt or damage the growth plates at the ends of the bones. That’s why it’s important for more serious injuries to be checked out by a doctor.

If your child’s pain or swelling persists for more than a few days, if they are unable or unwilling to put weight on the injured limb, or if there is significant bruising, swelling, or disfigurement, seek medical attention. Have a safe, fun, and active summer!

Create Strength in Your Core After Pregnancy

Feeling strong in your body starts with being connected to your center, also known as your core. If you’ve had a child within the last decade, you may still feel disconnected to your center. Pregnancy understandably does a number on your core: your abdominal muscles get stretched to their limits, your internal organs get pushed aside to make way for a growing human, and your back bears the load of many extra pounds. All of that without even beginning the conversation around your pelvic floor, hips, and ribs. Returning to a connection with your core can begin with paying attention to your breath. Slowing down your breathing and adding a little squeeze through your abdominal muscles at the end of the exhale can begin to turn on the deepest layer of muscles that wrap around your waist. Adding awareness of your pelvic floor to your breath can help create the foundation for strength. As you inhale, allow your pelvic floor to relax. This can be challenging if you’ve been doing a lot of kegels and focusing mainly on tightening those muscles. Take your time allowing them to relax with the inhale and then engage them on exhale.

Once you’ve found your breath, find your way to all fours, with wrists under shoulders and knees under hips. Exhale and round through your spine; inhale and find length from the crown of your head to your tailbone. Repeat a few times, then, on the inhale, reach the opposite arm and leg out to the height of your torso. Engage through your center to support your stability and to keep you from rocking side to side.

The next layer of activation is coming into a plank position. Bring your forearms to the ground, elbows under shoulders, and with your toes turned under, make a long line with your body. You can also keep your knees on the ground for this one. Keep your hips as high as your shoulders and focus on lifting your belly button toward your spine. Continue to breathe and use the exhale to engage as much of your center as possible. Think of your core as the stabilizing force that allows the rest of your body to do all the things you want to do. You can activate your center with any kind of movement you are doing, from carrying your keiki, climbing the stairs, or getting up and down from your desk chair (which hopefully you are doing multiple times during the day).

Remember that your core includes your abdominal muscles, your back, your hips, and your upper body. All of these parts need to work as a coordinated whole to keep you strong and injury-free.

Discover Prenatal Dance

The Ancient Dance That Empowers Your Birth

What if the secret to an easier, safer, and faster birth was hidden in a dance as old as time itself—a dance that celebrates your femininity and prepares your body for one of life’s greatest miracles? Welcome to the world of prenatal dance. I’ve always been a dancer. From the moment music reached my ears as a child, my body responded—swaying, twirling, merging with the rhythm like a divine lover speaking to my soul. I’ve studied everything from ballet and hula to therapeutic prenatal techniques from Germany and ancient movements from Egypt, Greece, and Persia. Along the way, I’ve found a profound truth: some dances belong to no single culture—they are Human Truths, universal movements that empower every woman. Prenatal dance, also known as birth dancing, is the most extraordinary of them all. Unlike any other form of dance, prenatal dance isn’t just about celebration or entertainment— it’s a sacred preparation for birth. Imagine women across millennia, circling their hips not for an audience, but to train their bodies for motherhood. Specific hip movements tone the uterus and strengthen your abs, legs, arms, and buttocks. The stronger these muscles, the easier your labor. Science agrees: research shows music and dance relax both body and mind, leading to a safer, faster, and less painful birth. Yet, this dance has been misunderstood for centuries. Pop culture often paints it as mere “belly dancing”—a sultry performance, stripping away its true essence. Far more than a “belly” dance, it’s a full-body ritual that honors the power of womanhood. Prenatal

dance is intoxicating. It’s intimate—a prayer, a meditation. When the music plays, whether a pulsing beat or a gentle melody, your cells absorb it, and you surrender to its flow. This dance celebrates your femininity like nothing else, save motherhood itself. It’s a celebration of your strength, a way to stretch, relax, and rejuvenate at any stage of pregnancy. Movements can include birth-specific yoga postures, hula, and other ancient traditions. You can learn simple techniques to enhance comfort during pregnancy, prepare your body and mind for birth, and even ease your baby into the world—all enriched with special healing music. Techniques include breathing and relaxation methods, ways to connect with your baby through movement, and postures for strength, tone, balance, and agility.

As Martha Graham said, “Wherever a dancer stands is holy ground.” If you can’t keep still when music starts, you’re a dancer—you just might not know it yet.

Zoe Weston offers a 5-week online series that welcomes women at all stages of pregnancy to discover this ancient practice. Learn more at www.zoeweston.com.

The Power of aLei

“Aloha aku, aloha mai” - Love is given, love received.

Gorgeous shades of sunset red and orange, crisp white with yolk-colored centers, and fiery hot pink plumeria flowers dance in my mind as I reminisce over years of lei-making. Some of my earliest memories growing up on Maui include my dad and I gathering plumeria flowers for graduations, weddings, and baby luaus. We’d bring along a handful of empty plastic grocery bags and pick the prettiest fresh blooms, which we’d then take home to craft our lei. Neighbors were always so gracious and helpful in sharing their flowers. We’d walk or drive home depending on how far we got, our bags nearly bursting. The heavy scent of plumeria and the sticky feeling of white sap

on my fingers are memories imprinted on my heart. Also, the look of gratitude on our neighbors’ faces when we’d surprise them with apple bananas from our yard as a thank you for their generosity.

Looking back, I’m thankful for the memories of being sandwiched between my aunties and cousins in a big circle, making ti leaf lei or plumeria lei together. Talking story and laughing. There was so much joy as well as focus, so you didn’t get poked with the long needle. When you finished with one lei, you moved on to the next. At the end, we’d have such a big pile to bless our friends and family with. Preparing for high school graduations each year was

a community effort. We always knew someone who was graduating. Someone we needed to celebrate and honor with a lei. Lovingly placing a lei over the gift receiver, followed by a kiss on the cheek or hug, meant we cared about this person. It was a tangible way to show our affection and aloha.

The custom of giving lei dates back to the earliest Polynesian settlers to Hawai’i, and the first lei were made of shells, seeds, nuts, feathers, and flowers among other available materials. Lei quickly grew in popularity and became a symbol of Hawaiian hospitality, aloha, and affection. In 1927, poet laureate Don Blanding got the idea to recognize the custom of giving and receiving lei, after talking it through with his colleague at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Grace

Tower Warren. On May 1, 1929, it was officially recognized by Governor Wallace R. Farrington as "May Day is Lei Day in Hawai’i.”

At birthdays, graduations, weddings, memorials, performances, and life’s milestones, we come together and give lei. And the power of a lei continues to grow. It is a reminder to show up and be present, in both the gathering and making of the lei as well as the gifting of it.

Maui 5k Raises Record $72k for Local Schools

About 1,200 Maui residents and visitors — some from as far away as Canada and Brazil — ran and walked in this year’s 14th annual Maui 5K at Maui Ocean Center, raising a record $72,000 for Maui Nui schools.

"We could not have reached this many participants and funds raised without the support of the Maui Ocean Center, our many sponsors and the various individuals who promoted the event within their school," said Arlene Emerson, Maui 5K co-founder.

Proceeds from the Maui 5K go directly back to the community, providing funding to Maui County schools. Nearly 50 schools participated in this year’s race, held in early March. The top 5 schools with the most participants were: Pōmaika‘i Elementary School (109 participants), Carden Academy of Maui (84 participants), Kula Elementary School (67 participants), Baldwin High School (47 participants) and Maui High School (46 participants).

Navigating Divorce

Dear Cici is a family resource for accurate informaton about sex and relationships. Email your questions to info@mauifamilymagazine.com.

Dear Cici,

My spouse and I have decided to divorce, and I’m worried about how this will impact our kids. Can you give me some advice about how to support them?

Worried in Nahiku

Dear WIN,

I’m sorry you're going through this. Divorce can be hard on everyone in the family. Depending on their age, children can experience a variety of responses to the changes happening around them. As parents, our role is to ensure our kids feel safe and loved throughout the process. Here are some suggestions to help you navigate this transition.

Open and honest communication. One of the most important things parents can do is communicate openly and honestly with their kids. Using age-appropriate language, explain the situation to them, being careful not to place blame on either parent. Encouraging them to ask questions and express their feelings will help them to feel heard and valued.

Consistency is key. Try to keep school schedules, bedtime routines, and activities the same. If adjustments need to be made, prepare children in advance and reassure them that there will always be an adult available to support them. A predictable routine will provide stability in a time of uncertainty.

Avoid conflict in front of children. Regardless of what's happening between you and your spouse, children should not be exposed to parental conflict. Arguing, blaming, or speaking negatively about the other parent in front of your kids can create stress and confusion. Instead, parents should do their best to work together respectfully and calmly, despite disagreements. If necessary, seek mediation or counseling to manage conflicts away from the children.

Create a healthy co-parenting relationship. A cooperative and respectful co-parenting relationship is essential to ease the transition for children. Work together to make joint decisions in their best interest, maintain a unified approach to discipline, and support the child’s relationship with the other parent. This demonstrates healthy communication and teaches them that people can cooperate and get along even if they don’t agree on everything. Normalize all the feelings. Children experiencing a divorce may have a range of emotions, from sadness and confusion to anger and anxiety. Let them know that it’s OK to be upset and that their emotions are valid. Encourage kids to express their feelings through talking, drawing, journaling, or other creative outlets.

Helping children feel safe and loved during a divorce requires patience, reassurance, and consistency. If you're concerned about how your kids are coping, consider finding a counselor who can help them express their feelings and develop coping strategies. It’s important to have support for yourself as well to help manage your stress and emotions through this process.

Most of all, don’t blame yourself; a peaceful/ cooperative divorce is healthier for children than an unhappy or hostile home environment. With time, understanding, and effort, kids can adjust and thrive despite the changes in their family structure.

Book Trust Celebrates 20 Years of Book Access & Ownership in Hawaii

Book Trust, an early literacy nonprofit co-founded by Maui residents, celebrated 20 years of increasing book access and ownership for keiki across the Hawaiian Islands with a book-themed fundraising and friend-raising event on February 22, 2025 at Ocean Organic Farm and Distillery. Thanks to the generosity of the Maui community, Book Trust raised more than $134,000!

Book Trust was founded in 2001 and expanded programming to Hawaii during the organization’s infancy. In the past 20 years, Book Trust’s work in Hawaii has supported more than 80,000 children in choosing and owning an estimated 800,000 books.

The organization's 20th-anniversary “Un-Birthday Party” was inspired by scenes and characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and included food, drinks, and music. Highlights included:

• Honoring Kula Elementary School with the Laulima Award as a tribute to the power of cooperation.

• Recognizing Susan Kean and her late husband, Jac Kean, with the Lokomaika’i Award. The

Keans were early supporters of Book Trust and were instrumental in expanding the organization to Hawaii schools.

• Announcing the Jac Kean Memorial Fund. Donations from the event's paddle raise were allocated to the newly established Jac Kean Memorial Fund. Contributions can be made here and will support increased book access and ownership for children.

In partnership with Scholastic, donors, and educators, the Book Trust program provides students in Title I elementary schools the opportunity to choose and keep their own books—at no cost to their families.

Throughout the school year, every student in a Book Trust classroom gets to choose books from a custom Scholastic Book Clubs flyer. When the book box arrives, the entire class participates in a celebration. Students write their names in their books and add them to their growing personal libraries.

The Book Trust program is currently in schools in 15 states across the nation, serving over 50,000 students in almost 3,000 classrooms.

Pro-Paletas

B y Maja Liotta

When summer in the tropics is upon us, a healthy go-to for the kids lies deep within the confines of your freezer and all you need for this frozen confection is your favorite fruit. Mango seems to be the harbinger of summer around these parts, but any combo would work for this recipe. Use a super healthy, pro-biotic rich coconut-based yogurt such as my go to brand, Coco-June. The texture and flavor are superior to others; the vanilla chamomile flavor is my fave, and it is available at Mana and Whole Foods. These delectable layered probiotic pops, or paletas, are loaded with flavor, fun to eat, and a feast for the eyes as well as the palette.

Ingredients

• 5 strawberries (sliced thin lengthwise, hull removed)

• 2 ripe mangos

• 1 whole orange/tangelo/mandarin, peeled and pitted

• 1 container of coconut yogurt

• Sweetener optional (local honey or squeeze of agave)

Directions

1. Blend the fruit ingredients into a puree, but save a few sliced strawberries to use while assembling the popsicles. Use small amounts of water with your blender to coax the mixture until the texture is nice and thick.

2. Build your pro-paletas by pouring the yogurt in the bottom, about an inch.

3. Gently add your fruit mixture.

4. Use a chopstick or a clean finger to slide a strawberry slice onto either side of your vessel.

5. Continue layering the mixture until you reach the top. Freeze and enjoy!

Pro-tip: Make a bunch because you’ll want some too, and so will all the kids in the neighborhood!

Chef Maja Liotta is a private events chef and Maui-based mother of three. Additionally, Maja is passionate about sharing the holistic benefits of food and cooking, providing nutritional consultation and private cooking classes for clients looking to broaden their practice using foods to optimize their well-being.
