Old Mauch Chunk was a prosperous place in the late 1800s. The town was firmly entrenched as the worldwide center for anthracite coal, the fuel of the industrial revolution. Anthracite coal needed a way out of coal country so the railroads built tracks. The same tracks that moved the coal were also available to bring people into the area. Mauch Chunk had its own gate at Penn Station in New York. Fortunes were made in coal mining and transportation.
