Visiting the project area, the students did not understand immediately how the building and the new museum could work with the city and with others buildings around. The sensations and the impressions from the visit suggest to have a project that must be recognizable as a new one with a contrast between old and new, in a physical and sensorial way. Watching the architectural drawings and the building during the visit, the first idea is to work in section and in plan concurrently. Other problems are the accesses and the paths into the project area and the differences in level between inside and outside, so these problems become a new value for the project in order to improve accessibility and the quality of spaces.

In this project there is no possibility to modify and change the main Fig. 1 - Model of Group n. 3. The main entrance of the new Museum is moved to the south in order to improve the accessibility and to retrain the space. (Photo by Matteo Locatelli)

facade of the building but one of the point of the project is to improve accessibility and create a new entrance for the museum so the students decide to change the main entrance moving it from the main facade to the south side. This is the idea from which everything started.

The idea The main entrance. The idea of moving the main entrance from the west side to the south one comes from two considerations. The first one is to improve accessibility, in fact restoring the main entrance would have resulted in having original steps and a dierence in level about 1.30 m and it is not simple to overcome this dierence without modifying the main facade or the original spaces inside the building.

148

Inside/Outside Museum (Group 3)

The second consideration is that in that space there was the room of the ambulance, but the museum doesn’t need this space and from the functional programme this space is completely demolished, so the new entrance is a way to retrain this new space. This choice is very important and strategic for the internal paths. The new entrance generates a circular path inside the museum and

this is very important to define the internal spaces. Working in plan and in section. The idea is to use the internal height to create a new floor. In the existing building there are no stairs or elevator to link this new floor with the existing one, so the idea is to create an external ramp that is not only for disable people but for everyone. This ramp is a space, a path and a way to overcome the dierences in level between the ground floor and the new one. This is not only a path, but it creates a new building. This is the link between old and 149

new, the recognizable think that everyone understands and that show Fig. 3 - Detail of the Model of Group n. 3. The new ramp creates new volumes and a new facade for the building. (Photo by Matteo Locatelli)

to you that something is happening. This new building is also very important to create a new facade: there is not an existing one, because the existing building has some parts that are destroyed, so it is very important to create a new facade. The ramp creates the building and new spaces: it creates a space on the ground floor that links the internal courtyard with the park and the museum. In this new space there is also the cafeteria and it is completely opened to watch the exposition outside and to have a bigger space in some part of the year. In this new space the visitors can decide to go to the first floor with the ramp or to remain on the ground floor to going to the cafeteria, to the bookshop or simply to go out. To link the ground floor with the new first floor there is not only the ramp but also an elevator that is in a position between the ramp and the oďŹƒces. The oďŹƒces are in the existing building in the north side of the project area. This building,

150

Inside/Outside Museum (Group 3)

that is not important and particularly interesting, seems to be ate from the new building that links it with the museum with a new space that is like a big atrium. The new path is a circular one: the visitor enters in the museum, he

can choose to go only in the cafeteria and in the bookshop, or to enter in the exposition area, in a circular path that goes up and down into the museum. The building is also the way to emphasize the main entrance: using the facade the entrance is covered and immediately recognizable from the outside. The facade turn to “eat the existing building in order to inform the citizens that something is happening in that place.

The museum The new entrance is in a place where, in the existing building, there were rooms for patients and visiting rooms, so is a very narrow space to have the main entrance. The idea is to make this space an unique space that occupies the entire part of the building. 151

bookshop and the cafeteria. This space that was narrow and not good for an entrance, is now completely opened with the main functions in it. The second floor with its terrace is on the main entrance so there is a double height to expand the space. The space in front of the main entrance is completely new: the ground grows up to drive the visitors to the main entrance and to the park between Palazzo Botta and the museum. This space is also useful to overcome the dierence of 1.30 m from inside to outside. To make this space recognizable from via Palestro, besides using the new building to have a roof for the main entrance, there is a new facade on the north side of the near building. This new facade is way to suggest something to the visitors. The internal path is completely free: the visitors can go in and out from the exposition spaces inside the museum like an organic path.

152

Inside/Outside Museum (Group 3)

The same path is in the new building: an organic path goes in and out from the building linking the internal and the external spaces in plan. The visitors go out in the north side of the museum, and with the ramp they reach the second level. The second level is a new structure that is completely opened to watch what is happening on the ground floor. In this way the light

comes from the top and the visitors have the sensation to be in a bigger space. From this level you can go down with the elevator and reach the ground floor and the cafeteria. The facade of the new building is like a canvas with a texture that is like the Braille. On this facade there are information, exposition and sensorial elements.

External areas The new building on the east side of the “Mondino” is very important to define the external areas. The space between the existing building

153

Accessibility and Buildings’ Conservation: methods, experiences and projects

and the new one is a space “for the exposition” and a space “for the museum”. It is not completely different from the park between Palazzo Botta and the museum, that’s because the idea is to open completely the new building to have just one great space. The idea is to have the path and the outdoor exhibition space linked together. In the park there are two kinds of spaces: one is a space that is conceptually of the museum. It is with gardens with typical flowers, vegetables and trees because food is not only what you cook, but also what comes from the nature. The measures of these gardens are from the measures of Golgi’s laboratory and this spaces are sometimes garden and sometimes place to rest with benches and information. The second kind of spaces is the space for the city and the citizens, with trees, gardens an places. They work without the museum and they are completely opened in every day of the year. There are two paths that lead the visitors to the park: one from via Ariberto and one from via Palestro.

Conclusions This is an example of consistency from the main idea to the project and it has new potentiality with a strong contrast between old and new. It is a challenge to make the existing great with a new idea with respect and courage. It is a museum for everyone, accessibility problems are completely solved with systems for everyone not only for disable people.

Analysis The analysis starts from the city of Pavia to the definition of the project area considering other buildings with the same characteristics (internal courtyard between two different buildings, contrast between open spaces and internal spaces and the relationship with the city) and the main paths inside the historical part of Pavia (Cardo and Decumano). Watching and visiting the area there are two main paths inside: one through Palazzo Botta, from Piazza Botta to the project area, and one from via Ariberto. This two paths generate a new space where they meet each other, a “pocket piazza”, that has a strong relationship with Golgi’s laboratory and the park. In addition to this, the analysis suggests to use these new Cardo and Decumano also inside the building. The existing shape of the building seems to have inside two arms that meet each other in a central point (under the glass roof in the old entrance).

entrance from via Palestro and using Cardo and Decumano inside the buildings, there is a new space that links the outside with the inside. This analysis generates the idea to do a project for the city and not only for the museum, to create new spaces and structures where retailers can show their products and where young and old people can stay together sharing moments and situations.

The relationship with the surrounding From the analysis the first decision is to maintain the original building without changing the shape and the plan completely. The project is to insert only small things that make the system a new one as a kind of respect for the existing. The main entrance is in the west side on via Palestro and it is in the old main entrance of the building: this is very important because the entrance is in the direction of the main path and it is opened on a

162

beautiful space with a glass roof. In this space there are the ticket office and a little shop and it ends with a new volume adherent to the existing. This new volume has a glass diaphragm that divides the new one from the old one and the shape is a simplification of the shape of the existing building. Materials are glass, concrete and steel and they

are the same materials for other part of the project. Between the ticket office and the new building there is a space that is called “atelier” that can be used to make lessons and shows, but that can work without the museum but with initiatives for the city. The difference in level in the main entrance is overcame by steps and a new platform that is completely integrated with the pavement. In the opposite side, there is a ramp in the new building that continues out of the building to the public spaces. The new building is useful to recreate a new facade for who is in the park and is completely integrated and respectful of the existing building. It is like a door for the new path from Piazza Botta.

163

The second path, from via Ariberto, leads to the building with offices Fig. 3 - Detail of the Model of Group n. 4. View from one of the lateral accesses to the area. (Photo by Matteo Locatelli)

and library. This building is the existing one in the north part of the project area, but now is retrained and made decent with a new roof with a glass and steel structure. There is a new space with a double height that is a new and important entrance. The last new building is the restaurant that is parallel to the second path and it is in concrete and glass. The entrance is in the public space and this building is in contrast with Golgi’s laboratory.

The museum The museum is an experience on different levels. The visitors enter in a big atrium full of light where they can decide to go out, visit the atelier or the museum. The museum is a sensorial one: ropes make paths and the visitors can pass through or walk around. This is very useful for blind people or disables to have a new experience inside it.

164

#whynot? (Group 4)

There are not all the functions inside: there are only what is useful for the museum. Every function for the city is outside: that because this place is for the city. Moving functions outside is important to exploit the external spaces. The interior of the museum has quite the same plan of the existing

building and services are near the entrance and the exposition parts are in the south part and in the north one.

The library and the restaurant/cafeteria The library and the oďŹƒces are in the existing building in the north part of the project area. This building is simplified and modified in order to create a very simple parallelepiped with a stereometric volume. The plan is not modified and to reach the first floor visitors and employees can use the existing stairs and elevator. There is only a great new space near the entrance. This space is a double high glass

roof and walls. This space links the ground floor with the first one and Fig. 5 - Group n. 4 discussing about the project. (Photo by Matteo Locatelli)

it makes the park enter into the building. The restaurant/cafeteria is near the public spaces. It is a one level building with structural walls inside and horizontal plan creating outside and inside spaces. This building guides the user into the park and into the public space hiding the spaces from via Ariberto.

External areas The design of the external areas is completely linked with the main idea (Cardo and Decumano). This two axes generate directions and spaces. The project of the external areas is to use the differences in level and different materials to create various sensations. Two ramps (from Palazzo Botta and from via Ariberto) in white stone and brickwork lead the visitors to the public spaces and inside the museum.

166

#whynot? (Group 4)

The central area (the pocket “piazza”) is in the middle and it is on a higher level than the museum and the Golgi’s laboratory and the material of this area is granite. Around this space there are also spaces which material is deactivated concrete, the same material in

Matteo Locatelli

front of the library. Golgi’s laboratory is in a lower space that is between the pocket “piazza” and the park of Golgi’s laboratory. There are also concrete walls that hide or emphasize the entrance of the building or create spaces as in the park near the restaurant where there are some areas where visitors can rest or see some temporary expositions. Original masts are maintained to preserve the actual identity of this space and in the garden the ground moves up and down naturally.

167

Accessibility and Buildings’ Conservation: methods, experiences and projects

Conclusions The strength of the project is the simplicity and the respect for the surrounding. The initial idea is completely analysed and put into the project going from the city to the museum. Accessibility is not only a problem, but is a way to make something good and special for everyone. The project is simple and it starts from the idea that everything could be done, for the city and for everyone, answering to a very simple question: WHY NOT?
