General Information

WELCOME to the 38th annual Summer Arts & Music Festival! Sure as the Spring return of Stellar’s Jays and Eel River rafters, on the weekend of May 31st/June 1st, the Summer Arts & Music Festival (SAMF) will occupy beautiful Benbow Lake State Recreation Area on the banks of the meandering Eel. Like magic, the arrival of musicians, painters, potters, jewelers, sculptors, dancers, crafters of every hue, circus performers and visitors from all over California and beyond, the North Coast’s premier summer celebration of arts, culture and community will return for it’s 38th year! ‘Tis a magical thing!

No Dogs Allowed - No exceptions.

Ok, truth be told, this “magical thing” has been in preparations for months. That’s what it takes to be able to offer more than 100 diverse performances on 4+ stages, over 150 handmade craft, fine arts and food booths, an all-media fine arts showcase, a fabulous kid zone, the Generation Green tent and more!

Watch Your Kids - Don’t leave your children unattended. Safety I.D. tags are available at both admission gates. Lost parents should check in at Security Central. First Aid - The first-aid tent is located next to the Trees Stage at the north end of the festival. Stop here for trained medical attention or find a member of our security or emergency crews. Telephones - Free public cell phones are available for use at the Mateel Information Booth. ATM - Need cash? Visit the solar powered ATM near the Trees Stage.

The Kid Zone is “the place to be” for young kids at SAMF with live circus acts galore, face-painting, wax hands and all the other annual kid favorites!

Recycling - Recycling barrels are conveniently located throughout the festival grounds. Please use them for all recyclable materials.

The 2014 musical line-up couldn’t be more diverse this year! Here are some of the not-to-be-missed musical acts featured on SAMF’s four stages. Saturday night’s Trees Stage headliner, Pimps of Joytime bring their “futuristic funk” said to be one of the most kickin’ incendiary live shows of that scene today. Nahko and Medicine For The People possess a raw power and spiritual intensity that is mesmerizing. The collaboration of local band, Motherlode with DJ Logic, one of the world’s most respected turntablists & Bill Summers, the legendary Afro-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist, brings back a 70’s soundtrack that is an extravaganza of fun. Hailing from Australia, Ganga Giri, with his hypnotically rhythmic didgeridoo, fat tribal beats and strong funk basslines, brings his widely celebrated global roots party to the mix. Saritah is back with her potent combination of feminine spirit, conscious lyrics, and heartfelt melodies. Also back for the 2nd year is the Summertronica tent E-music Tent located at the south end of the fairway.

No Lifeguard On Duty - Swim at your own risk. Please note there is no lifeguard on duty and that rocks can be slick and the river swift in spots.

SAMF has always supported a policy of showcasing only handcraft artisans who personally exhibit their wares at this festival. The juried arts and crafts vendors offer an impressive variety of one-of-a- kind treasures, (which make great birthday and holiday gifts!) Speaking of gifts, our community is graciously gifted by the wonderful services of many of our local fire departments, schools, health organizations, environmental groups, radio stations, and other non-profits represented at the festival. Know that your patronage of these vital non- profit food vendors also makes it possible for the Mateel to continue its work in offering arts and humanitarian programs, services and events like this to the community. Lastly, we lost two very special people this year, who were an integral part of both summer festivals, SAMF and Reggae on the River. Doug Green, our former Mateel board president and friend to many, who, amongst his many accomplishments helped bring Reggae on the River home to French’s Camp, succumbed to a year-long battle with cancer last Fall. Then this March, Tim Olson, the Briceland Fire Chief and all-round great county-wide volunteer and friend, and our Critical Incident Commander at both SAMF and ROTR, died of a sudden heart attack. We will miss and honor Doug and Tim at Summer Arts and Reggae this year, two people who made a difference, shared a love of community and touched many hearts. Hearts loom large in the spirit of our community’s annual summer gathering. We’ll chat with family, and friends new and old, enjoy an abundance of laughs and smiles, the music, the arts….and the great thing about it is when it’s over, we all can take those heartfelt feelings with us. They’re ours to keep and to share. On behalf the of the heart of Mateel Community Center: Welcome to the 38th annual Summer Arts and Music Festival!

Don’t Drink & Drive - Please drink responsibly and be sure to take the shuttle or find a designated driver if you’ve had any alcohol.

Ride The Shuttle The Summer Arts shuttle is the best way to access the festival. TREES STAGE ~ HEADLINERS Saturday, May 31

Pimps of Joytime • 8:40pm Straight out of Brooklyn, New York, Pimps of Joytime put on one of the most incendiary live shows on the scene today. Fronted by charismatic bandleader Brian J, the band’s soulful visionary- his well-crafted songs invite the listener to enter a world of infectious dance grooves and unforgettable melodies. Since 2005, when Brian J first assembled the Pimps’ musical concept, he’s been joined by the lady of rhythm and soul, Mayteana Morales, whose distinct voice/ beats transport listeners to another dimension. Completing POJ’s front line is Chauncey Year wood, who adds funky flavor to every song with tasty conga grooves and his classically soulful voice. Filling out the rhythm section is super talent, David Bailis, on bass and synth alongside a rotating cast of top-notch drummers. The electricity between the band members is palpable as their spirited attitude and undeniable swagger reveals the Brooklyn culture from which they hail- a culture where deejays AND live music rule. POJ’s artful and confident blend of musical styles, with elements of Afro-beat, salsa, blues, rock, disco, and electronica consistently energize dance floors wherever they go. Their second and most-recent album, 2011’s “Janxta Funk!” features collaborations with legendary artists Cyril and Art Neville of the Neville Brothers and Roy Ayers. Having established their reputation as one of the most acclaimed live funk acts currently touring, POJ’s popularity grows with every stop- and judging from their summer tour schedule they are clearly becoming a favorite on the national festival circuit too. Audiences can anticipate a page out of the book of futuristic funk; a testament that real music is still alive, kicking, and moving ever forward!

Motherlode with DJ Logic and Bill Summers 6:50pm Bringing back the 70s soundtrack, this Arcata based nine-piece funk train is an extravaganza of fun. Heavily influenced by James Brown and the JBs, Herbie Hancock, as well as the more contemporary Galactic, Greyboy Allstars and Soulive, Motherlode plays complex arrangements and delivers them with grit. Joining them, as guests for this special set, will be DJ Logic and Bill Summers. Summers, a New Orleans based Afro-Cuban/ Latin jazz percussionist and a multi-instrumentalist, primarily plays on the congas. Though he is most well known for his work with Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters and his collaboration with trumpeter Irvin Mayfield in Los Hombres Calientes, he also worked behind the scenes on the film score for “The Color Purple” and with Quincy Jones on the TV miniseries, “Roots.” Meanwhile, DJ Logic is credited for introducing jazz into hip-hop and is respected as one of the world’s most accomplished turntabalists. A highly respected session musician, innovative band leader, and New York City DJ/ producer, Logic emerged in the early 90s amidst the Bronx hip-hop scene and has since been amassing a veritable mountain of collaborations ranging from the likes of Medeski Martin & Wood to John Mayer to The Roots. An electronic music ambassador, with spinning skills beyond reproach, Logic will also play a set of his own on the Solar Stage Sunday night. 6 | Mateel Community Center

Nahko & Medicine For The People • 8:40pm Twenty-seven year old Nahko Bear is an old soul and a gifted genius on an incredible life journey. His grandmother forced his mother into prostitution at the age of 14 and he was born, in Oregon, from an act of violence. At nine months old, he was adopted by a white American family and they raised him as a conservative Christian and introduced him to music. The rest of his journey, thus far, has been about cultural identity (he is a mix of Apache, Puerto Rican and Filipino), acceptance, and forgiveness- and his music is a catalyst for his own self-discovery. With vocal excellence and impeccable energy, the truth of his lyrics reaches into the hearts of his listeners and asks them to look at themselves and ultimately, to empower themselves. Through his own self-empowerment, Nahko eventually found his mother, discovered his biological dad had been murdered, and even visited his father’s murderer in prison. These experiences compelled him to truly consider the idea of forgiveness: “Don’t waste your hate/rather gather and create/be of service/be a sensible person/ use your words and don’t be nervous/you can do this/you’ve got purpose/ find your medicine and use it.” Medicine for the People includes Hope Medford, known for her 20 years as a world-studied hand-drummer; the Australian-raised, electrified acoustic guitar player, Chase Makai; and, most recently, a supremely-talented and animated bassist. They’ve produced numerous standout music videos, and their overall presentation- whether live or recorded- is nothing less than shamanic- as evidenced on both their breakout debut album, “On The Verge,” and their latest, “Dark As Night” (2013). Their raw power and intensity has ignited fans to spread the word at wildfire pace- and, as anyone who has seen them knows, the sweat, gusto and honest rock that this band offers on stage is an experience you won’t forget. Nahko and Medicine For The People are an act who truly live up to their name- undoubtedly one of the most engaging bands of these times!

Afrolicious • 7:00pm This San Francisco based collective acts like an offspring of Parliament and drums like a Fela Kuti remix, all with their own original club heavy beats and instrumentation. Combining funk grooves with Afro-beat genes, their upbeat compositions rip with tight horns and loose, saucy lyrics- merging sounds and crossing borders. Moving between tropical and electronic music, this fresh collective has not only toured with Thievery Corporation (a collaboration that led Listen Up Denver to name them Opening Act of the Year in 2012), but also produced two EPs and one LP, “California Dreaming” on their ESL Music label. With musicians who come from backgrounds as diverse as the band’s music, they boast five singers who range from hiphop to soul to Afro-centric pop. Together, they play a light-hearted, but groove-heavy form of soulful funk, powered by bass and keyboards with horns and good-natured vocals floating on top. The name, “Afrolicious” was inspired by a 2006 weekly dance party at the Elbo Room in SF, where brothers Joe and Oz McGuire first collaborated with producers, DJs and musicians to craft their group’s sound. Fellow members, Freshislife, (one of the lead singers), was originally a star calypso dancer in Trinidad and Tobago while vocalist and percussionist, Baba Duru, was in the original Headhunters. As the cultural exchange is ever intensifying, musical borders are progressively becoming harder to discern between regions, styles and even time periods. Afrolicious is a prime example of this cross-pollination.

2014 Summer Arts & Music Festival | 7

TREES STAGE Saturday, May 31 10:00 • 7th Generation Rise Turtle Island native of Lakota and Yaqui origin, Good Shield Aguilar’s indigenous soul music ranges from traditional drumming and singing to acoustic melodies with spoken word, funky dance grooves and hard rock elements. Offering culturally conscious lyrics, he is a multiinstrumentalist accompanied onstage by indigenous friends.

11:00 • Lyndsey Battle Trio A singer-songwriter from the Gulf Coast who brings a folk style and perspective to the music of the Mississippi River Delta, Lyndsey Battle is currently collaborating with Cory Goldman (guitar/banjo) and Brian Hennesy (upright bass). Having released her third album last year, “All Ways in a Good Way,” Battle always gives a fun live performance.

12:00 • Feet First A Summer Arts institution since the beginning, these festival favorites have shared the love of dance with three generations of local dancers. They perform a variety of dance and theatrical pieces covering a myriad of styles and always draw a loyal crowd for their annual performances.

12:55 Tweener • Garberville Town Band The Garberville Town Band plays from the heart of Humboldt. All together the members have close to two centuries of music playing under their belts. Latin, funk, world village music, and fiery horn solos will brighten your day. And get ready, this street- ready group could pop up anywhere around the fest.

1:25 • Lost Coast Marimbas An arsenal of handmade marimbas and a tropical rhythm section come together to create the jazz-tinged, psychedelic sound of Lost Coast Marimbas, a longtime local favorite sure to get you in the Summer Arts spirit.

2:10 Tweener • Lizzy & Dan Featuring two members of the rocking NoHum outfit, Lizzy & The Moonbeams, the duo of Lizzy And Dan create music to warm your heart and make you smile.

2:35 • Feufollet Zydeco music is in the throes of generational change and no group on the current scene represents this better than Feufollet. While this downright radical band can still huff and stomp through a traditional two-step with a fiddle and button accordion, they transcend the genre, experimenting with backup vocal harmonies, assorted electric keyboards (even a toy piano!), horns, a pedal steel guitar and some tasty electronic effects. Feufollet’s innovations only serve to bring out the ache and gumption of the music. In their part of The South, it’s normal to have brash young hipsters rubbing shoulders with older two-step fans in clubs where rock, indie pop, country and Cajun all converge. Inspired by a love for the long-standing Cajun music tradition, Feufollet sings their choruses in Cajun French and all of their works are original. Their 2011 Grammy nominated album “En Couleurs” was praised 8 | Mateel Community Center

by the New York Times as well as Elvis Costello, who proclaimed it to be “the most beautifully melodic album I’ve heard all year.” Come experience the genre-bending spirit that’s infusing the deep musical tradition of the Lafayette, Louisiana scene they call home.

3:45 Tweener • Jefferson Parson Jefferson parson is a singer-songwriter who’s been a captivating force for peace and justice. His third album, “Hillbilly Hook,” produced by bluegrass icon, Peter Rowan, confirms his gift as an inventive and moving storyteller and wordsmith.

4:05 • Glen David Andrews One of the great un-sung talents of New Orleans, Glen David Andrews has absorbed a fading tradition and is a link for his generation to something important. Raised on the mean streets of the Treme neighborhood (what many consider to be the oldest Black community in the U.S.) amongst a host of musical giants including his mentor, “Tuba Fats” Lacen; his oldest brother, Derrick Tabb (Rebirth Brass band); and cousin, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews; Glen David himself is part of the Louisiana Hall of Fame. Staying closer to the roots, cooking R&B, gospel, blues and jazz into a rich, dark Creole gumbo of soulful, rocking funk, he and his crack ensemble deliver the searing energy of a New Orleans heat wave. A superior vocalist, entertainer, and trombonist, Glen David Andrews is back from the brink and currently touring in support of his latest album, “Redemption,” which was released earlier this year and is being heralded for its deep personal relevance and gospel roots.

5:15 Tweener • Lyndsey Battle A Humboldt based singer-songwriter who brings folk perspective and her Gulf Coast roots to the music of the Mississippi River Delta.

5:35 • Ganga Giri Hailing from Australia, Ganga Giri (Gun-gah Gear-ree) mixes the traditional, hypnotically rhythmic sounds of the didgeridoo with fat tribal beats and dirty funky bass lines to create a pulsating deep earth meets the modern streets experience. A remarkably innovative act, their live show includes world instruments, keys, a French Guyanese vocalist, a live electronic drummer, and- occasionally - Aboriginal singers and dancers. Explosive at times and ambient and flowing at others, this multi-cultural music of complex grooves is where natural elements mix with dub and electronica- all mashed up in a dancehall vibe. A widely celebrated global roots party, Ganga Giri has released over seven albums and played major stages from Japan to Germany and Switzerland to the U.S., including some of the biggest outdoor dance events around the globe.

6:45 Tweener • RedHawk Woman A 2014 double-nominee of the West Coast American Indian Music Awards, RedHawk Woman’s music translates uplifting traditional, contemporary, and conscious hip-hop styling with spoken word.

6:50 • Motherlode with DJ Logic and Bill Summers See Saturday’s Trees Stage headliner description.

8:40 • Pimps of Joytime See Saturday’s Trees Stage headliner description.

10:00 • Joanne Rand Touring nationally for 30 years, Joanne Rand continues to push the art pedal to the floor, currently preparing to release her 14th CD of original music: “Still a Real World.” Through her songs, Rand traverses love, politics, conservation, spirituality and life with a seasoned-to-perfection voice that, according to Terry Tempest Williams, “opens the doors of creation.”

11:00 • Chris & Peter Folk duo, Chris & Peter, have been playing together for the past 40 years and have performed at nearly every Summer Arts since the festival’s inception. They play a mix of traditional and original material on dobro and guitar and bring you a taste of the old-time festival magic.

12:00 • Feet First See Saturday’s Trees Stage description.

1:10 • Quetzal Guerrero At four years old, this Arizona native and With a name meaning “precious feather” in the ancient Aztec-Nahautl language, this Arizona native first picked up a violin at age four. Of Mexican, Brazilian and Native American ancestry, he studied classical violin at the famous Suzuki Institute in Japan and at the Conservatorio Pernambucuano de Musica in Brazil and has blossomed into an outstanding multi-instrumentalist, playing with fluidity of voice on electric violin, guitar and percussion. Performing with a trio on this outing, his live shows mix elements of 90s R&B and neo-Latin soul and feature rhythms that are guaranteed to move you. Currently based in LA, Guerrero was recently selected as an American Arts Ambassador and is set to tour the globe later this year as part of an esteemed American heritage presentation. He is also an accomplished dancer and capoeirista- which heightens the live experience and makes him a favorite at festivals and cultural events alike.

2:15 Tweener • Thomas Lasbury Thomas Lasbury is a singer-songwriter from Southern Humboldt and in this solo set he will play from his songbook of original blues, rock, and folk inspired tunes.

2:35 • Berel Alexander Driven by a passion for the soul inherent in many genres, Berel Alexander explores aspects of the blues, Latin, jazz, hip-hop and reggae, delivering a feel good show that leaves you with the feeling that “hope still has a place in this crazy world.” Oaklandbased/Humboldt County raised, Berel Alexander is the singer-songwriter and high energy front man of a potent five-piece band comprised of keys, electric cello and a hearty drum and bass. Influenced by Motown as well as neo-soul like D’Angelo and hip-hop ala The Roots, Berel riffs the acoustic guitar with tuneful melodies, connecting people in all walks of life. His new EP, “All Over It’ was released this year and proves him to be an artist of ever-maturing taste, depth, and style.

TREES STAGE

Sunday, June 1

3:55 • Saritah Saritah delivers a potent combination of feminine spirit, conscious lyrics and heartful melodies while embodying a unique fusion of roots, reggae, soul, acoustic and dancehall. Born to parents from different cultures, a Korean mother and an English father, and growing up in the most isolated city in the world (Perth, Australia), Saritah always felt a need to be part of the global community and loves connecting with and uplifting her audiences. As heard on her album, “Dig Deep” (2012) Saritah’s songs are reflections, affirmations, invocations, revelations of her vision for the future- and her live shows are colorful celebrations of life itself. A beloved part of this year’s lineup, Saritah’s vocal attitude and grace is supported by a diverse collective of talented musicians who each contribute their intrinsic flair in bringing her songs to life.

5:05 Tweener • Del McCain Masterful songwriter, guitarist and singer Del McCain in a rare solo performance. Guaranteed to be fun and inspirational with strong rhythms, lyrics and melodies.

5:25 • The Brothers Comatose Banging away on stringed instruments. Singing. Beer. Camping. Hiking. Drinking coffee. Listening to records. Road trips. Like the list indicates, this may be one easygoing Bay-Area based band, but they play some mean bluegrass folk music that has landed them on major festival stages such as Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, The Strawberrry Festival, High Sierra and Wakarusa. Brothers Alex (banjo/ vocals) and Ben Morrison (guitar/ vocals) of the Brothers Comatose grew up in a house that was known for its music parties: everyone would bring an instrument, call out tunes, call out changes and play for hours. The Brothers then took this generous, inclusive, and rowdy attitude to stages all over San Francisco and the buzz now has them touring nationally as well. Their first album, “Songs From The Stoop” (2010) received five star reviews and the excitement continues about their latest album, “Respect the Van” (2012). With the addition of members Philip Brezina (fiddle) and Ryan Avellone (mandolin), this string quintet brings a sing-along, stompalong atmosphere everywhere they go, making for one big extended Morrison family house party.

paintings (oil, acrylic, and mixed media) which convey the movement of acrobats, dancers, and flow artists; their strength, beauty and connectedness to source. Mezzanine said, “This lush juxtaposition of traditional and impressionis tic styles with contemporary subjects transforms street performers, aerialists, hoop dancers, trapeze artists, into the aerobatic twirling Skymaids and Skymen who make forays into the alternately ethereal underwater and cloud filled diaphonous scapes in the blissful realm of Nebulon.”

As an artist, she loves to design, fabricate, and manifest jewels that inspire, delight, and make this world a more delicious place, one sparkle at a time.

Organic Attire #25 In 2004, artists Jan and Gary Stephens began producing a line of clothing called Organic Attire. Jan reports that their gross income has more than doubled in the ten years since, leading to a healthier bottom line, despite increased costs of production. She says she creates her own style based on what she likes. The result is comfortable and beautifully designed clothing that is as functional as it is pleasing to the eye.

Jsun Paul aka DJ Jsun is a CA native who’s roots run deep in the electronic music scene. Since his introduction to house music in the early 90’s, Jsun has been working hard to establish Northern California as an important hub for the underground movement. In 1999 he co-founded Deep Groove Society, an event collective consisting of the most talented DJs, producers, and artists in NorCal, and in 2013 was signed as a DJ/Producer for Wulfpack, a collective that is currently taking the scene by storm. Mateel Programs Serving Our Community Recycled Youth Recycled Youth, is a teenage Theatre Ensemble and one of our programs for kids that is near and dear to the Mateel. Under the direction of its founder, local theatre professional, Joani Rose, the teen participants use comedy, physical theatre and music to explore and express their questions and views of the world and their lives. The result is a series of vibrant skits that are highly entertaining, comedic at times, moving and thought-provoking. Some of the issues Recycled Youth has explored are the effects of GMOs on our health, the effects of growing up around the marijuana industry, climate change, the influx of transients in our area, duplicitous politicians, sexuality, relationships, family dynamics….issues that effect us all as seen through the focused awe of young people in the midst of finding their way in life.

Random People Theatre Project The Random People Monologues Project, (RPMP) is an experiential theatre program directed by southern Humboldt residents, Jenny Edwards and Susan Alexander, its founders, and Marilyn Foote. Local theatre professional, Anna Rogers has also been a huge part of RPMP, helping to produce the show. Originally starting out as a compilation of monologues, RPMP has expanded to include dialogues as well, with the actors speaking directly to the audience. There is usually a unifying theme to the vignettes and this year’s productions in March centered around the lives of people working, visiting or finding themselves a patient of the mythical, small town General Hospital. Chances are that if you live in Southern Humboldt, you know someone who is involved in the annual RPMP show and it’s always entertaining to see your neighbors performing as their alter ego or a character created entirely out of their imaginations. Now going into its 10th year, this Mateel-sponsored program and the show it produces have become very popular at the Mateel, playing 3 or 4 shows to mostly sold out crowds every March. Show your support by coming to enjoy the show or honing your own secret talents!

Missoula Children’s Theatre Another fabulous theatre program that Mateel brings to our theatre-loving community is the Missoula Children’s Theatre. (MCT). A highpoint of Fall for many kids in Southern Humboldt is when two of MCT’s professional Actor/Directors pull into town towing scenery, costumes, props, make-up, lighting and basically everything it takes to put on a full-scale, musical theatre production. All that’s need is a cast of 60! Luckily we have plenty of willing enthusiastic kids who want to participate. Fifty to 60 local students, from Kindergarten through 12th grade are cast at an open audition on that first Monday. Throughout the week they are well-rehearsed, learning lines, songs and choreography to perform as an ensemble in a full-length musical. All of the plays are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales we all know and love. This year’s production will be Rapunzel. Missoula Children’s Theatre International Tour Project is the largest most well-respected, touring children’s theatre program in the U.S, and we think our kids deserve the best. This year MCT will start their week-long residency at the Mateel on Monday, September 29, culminating with their big performance of Rapunzel on Saturday, October 4. Part of the Mateel’s continuing mission to offer quality cultural opportunities for youth, the Missoula Children’s Theatre is offered at no cost to participants.
