WELCOME to the 40th Annual Summer Arts & Music Festival! In the 40 years since its birth, when it was christened simply “Summer Arts Fair”, the Summer Arts & Music Festival has evolved from a small but lovely arts & crafts fair attended by a few hundred people, to the festival it is today. Voted 2015’s “Best Music Festival in Humboldt County” by North Coast Journal readers, and “One of 15 Transformational Festivals to Attend in 2015” by Fest300 Magazine, here at its home in southern Humboldt County it’s become an annual rite of summer. Music has literally taken center stage at SAMF since that first weekend, and this year will be no exception. There will be more than 100 unique performances by eclectic entertainers on 4+ stages, showcasing a diverse array of local to international talent. This year’s musical headliners include…. John Popper with Object Heavy & DJ Logic; March Fourth! Marching Band; Delhi 2 Dublin; The Skints; Orgone; Joe Craven & The Sometimers; Grace Love & The True Loves; Koradub; La Misa Negra; Tempest; Hillstomp; Candelaria; Midnight North; The Blackberry Bushes; Alice DiMicele; Pete Ciotti Trio; Salt Petal; and Joanne Rand; along with the best of our local talent. Always a crowd favorite, the dance troupes perform at the trees Stage at noon both days, from the tiny fairies, flowers and bees that hop and twirl and bump into each other in all their adorableness, to the up and coming and accomplished ballerinas. Other spirited dance troupes to see include the gypsy dancers and Middle Eastern and Egyptian-inspired belly dancers starting at 1pm, mid-fairway at the Belly Dance Temple, with two full-day schedules of performances. The Kid Zone is always a hit with Circus Nature and their 3 Rings of Play; an arts & crafts area; a bouncy house; a one-of-a-kind museum of curiosities called the Odditorium; the antics of Mickey the Clown; face-painting and more. And heads up! A gaggle of performers including jugglers, clowns, unicyclists and face-painted kids may be spotted parading down the fairway at any time! Nearly 120 handmade craft, food, and information booths will line the fairway! Some forward-thinking festival attendees start their holiday and birthday gift purchasing with the endless variety of handmade, quality, one-of-a-kind treasures. The Generation Green Dome, and non-profit information booths will be there to inform and enlighten… all set upon a backdrop of ancient redwoods and the meandering Eel River at the Benbow Lake State Recreation Area. The Mateel Community Center thanks both patrons and sponsors for supporting Summer Arts & Music Festival which helps fund the arts and social programs, events, and services to our rural Southern Humboldt communities year after year. Many of the food booths with their delicious offerings are benefitting our local fire departments, schools, health organizations, environmental groups, public radio stations, and other non-profits so important to our way of life here. Know that your generosity is always appreciated by all our non-profits. The Mateel Community Center is honored and proud to celebrate the 40th year of this beloved celebration of the arts, culture and community this June 4th - 5th. On behalf of the Mateel Community Center, have a fabulous, fun and magical time at the Summer Arts & Music Festival 2016!

Headliners! SATURDAY, JUNE 4 Trees Stage 8:40 • MarchFourth! Marching Band MarchFourth! is an internationally-acclaimed, genre-breaking force in the world of entertainment – a sonic explosion delivered by 20 musicians, dancers, and artisans who travel the world year-round, taking audience

members on a joy-inducing, foot-stomping, booty-shaking, soul-stirring journey that defies categorization. Aside from their marching band-themed costumes and multi-member drum and brass corp, they are far from a traditional “marching band” (though they have been known to parade down Main Street before taking the stage). The show will take you from the swamps of Louisiana to the gypsy camps of Eastern Europe, and through the deepest grooves of American funk, rock, and jazz, with the added visual kaleidoscope of stilt walkers, hoopers and Vaudeville-style dancers. They’ve headlined too many major festivals to name, and have performed at prestigious venues from The Kennedy Center to a cultural exchange tour of China. MarchFourth! whips audiences into a celebratory frenzy with an over-the-top spectacle of high-energy compositions, colorful costumes, hilarious stage shenanigans, and irresistible charisma!

7:00 • The Skints Dubbing their sound as “music from Jamaica in a London style,” The Skints mix reggae, ska, and dub with touches of grime and hip-hop; a contemporary style that draws as much from the streets of London as it does from the Caribbean. The band started in 2005 as a group of friends, teenagers

From Vancouver, Canada, Delhi 2 Dublin was founded in 2006 by Tarun Nayar (tabla/ electronics), Sanjay Seran (vocals), and Ravi Binning (dhol/ dholak). Their sound started as an electronic fusion between bhangra beats, traditional Indian instruments, and Celtic fiddle, and has since grown into anything from dub reggae to breakbeats to straight-up happy dance music. Word spread about their ridiculously energetic live show, and in the decade since, these road-warriors have become one of Canada’s most prevalent bands and have incessantly toured across the globe. Delhi 2 Dublin released their ninth album titled We’re All Desi in 2015, which was heavily influenced by their favorite 1970s Bollywood records and their love for funk music, and was produced by Nick Middleton (of The Funk Hunters). Their songs and the band itself reflect the cultural diversity present in most major cities around the world. Official band members Nayar, Seran, and Binning are joined in this live performance by Serena Eades (violin), James Hussain (guitar), and Jaron Freeman-Fox (violin, guitar), to challenge the definition of urban music and drag it to the intersection of bhangra, Celtic, dub reggae, and electronica.

2016 Summer Arts & Music Festival | 17

Focus on Fine Art The Art of Summer Arts- 40 Years of Festival Posters A special exhibition for our 40th anniversary, the Fine Arts Tent will feature a Summer Arts poster retrospective that will highlight posters and original art from four decades of festival history–with designs by many esteemed local artists.

Our 40th anniversary design by Margriet Seinen A note from the artist… I was excited to be asked to do the artwork for the poster this year and had ambitious plans, which didn’t materialize but then that is the nature of art. I wanted to paint something that echoed the grand posters of the early 1900’s in style and had an art nouveau look, while including a timeless image of the artistry of our splendid summer festival. A dancer was needed at center to show both the art and the music present everywhere. When I looked through my photos of the fair I chose the one of Luna Moon caught in an energetic circular motion that seemed just right at center. Then I added booths and people and the background scenery. I have had a booth at the SAF showing my silk paintings every year since 1983, and look forward to another fun and social celebration of the arts this year. ~ Margriet

SATURDAY & SUNDAY All Media Fine Arts Tent The All-Media Fine Arts Tent will showcase dozens of exquisite paintings, drawings, sculpture, functional pieces, photographs, and mixed-media artwork by many of our region’s top artists. Marjo Lak’s passion is the slippery sounds of buttery bass lines that inspire entire dance floors; a musical force that whips bodies into rhythmic movements. Her eclectic soundscapes range from Tech-house, Electro Swing, Brazilian Pop, World, Soul, Funk, Dub to disco, and jazz. She can make the dance floor sizzle with the energetic, greasy textures of house music influenced by deep house, indie and nu-disco.

Meaning “Singing to the Earth,” it is in this spirit that their music is offered.
