Welcome to the 2024 edition of the Winning Homes Magazine. In this edition of Winning Homes, new homebuyers can examine photographs and profiles of award-winning homes, as well as a directory of all entrants.
Into its nineteenth year the Winning Homes Magazine is the eminent publication of the Residential Construction Industry in Western Australia and a showcase of the extraordinary skills and quality of West Australian residential builders.
This year we again celebrate achievements of the Master Builders members who entered their projects into the 2024 Master Builders Commonwealth Bank Housing Excellence Awards. There are four major categories – contract homes, display homes, alterations and additions and multi-unit developments.
This year, the projects on show did not disappoint. Through some of the toughest times our industry has seen in many years, the quality of craftsmanship on show was nothing short of extraordinary.
Each of the 236 entries were meticulously judged by a panel of expert Master Builders. The quality of the field this year was particularly strong, making the judging especially tight.
The Master Builders Housing Excellence Awards program is in its 44th year. The winners and finalists of these Awards continue to set the standard for our industry and operate at the cutting edge of building innovation and design.
These awards are also a representation of the amazing contribution that Master Builders members make to the community and WA economy. They show the efforts made to ensure we build to meet the changing needs of the community, how we contribute to building a more sustainable built environment, and what can be achieved on limited budgets to ensure we can provide safe and affordable housing for the most vulnerable Western Australians. Inverter Technology and Why it Makes Sense
Inverter technology in air conditioning means the days of energy-hungry air conditioners are long behind us. Inverter technology allows the air conditioner to run for a longer period at the same set point, without consuming large amounts of energy.
Inverter technology works by the air conditioner adjusting the speed of the compressor in the air conditioner’s outdoor condenser unit. This adjustment means that the compressor speed can be either dialled up or reduced based on the user input demands and ambient temperature. When an air conditioner is equipped with inverter technology, the air conditioner will work to reach the designated set-point as quickly and in the most efficient way possible.
One leading drawcard of inverter technology and why it’s so popular with the consumer is how it works to reduce the running cost of an air conditioner. When the speed of the compressor can be adjusted, this means the air conditioner isn’t always going to be working at maximum capacity, leading to reduced running costs. Another benefit of inverter technology is that it helps to improve the longevity of the air conditioner. How so? If the air conditioner can operate and maintain the set-point at 50% of its capacity vs 100% of its capacity, it will not be placing as much strain on internal and external componentry for extended periods.
Let us illustrate how this works. When you first turn the air conditioner on to cooling mode on a warm summer day, the compressor will begin by working at maximum speed (based on user inputs) so that it can reach the set point in the quickest, most efficient way possible. Once the system nears or reaches the set point, the speed of the compressor is dialled back so that the air conditioner is still running, but not working anywhere near as hard. From here, it’s a process of the compressor speeding up and slowing down by itself so that it can maintain the desired set point. If the set-point is further adjusted, the speed of the compressor will simply increase to reach and/or maintain the new set-point.
