Championing Alzheimer’s research for a cure
John and Dottie Remondi’s commitment to advancing Alzheimer’s research is not only impactful, but also deeply personal.
John and Dottie witnessed firsthand the devastating toll that Alzheimer’s disease takes on people and families. John’s mother suffered from the illness, and like so many of us, he watched several others in his life battle the disease. So, when John and Dottie were introduced to Dr. Joseph Arboleda-Velasquez—Mass Eye and Ear’s leading Alzheimer’s researcher—they were inspired and hopeful that a cure might be possible.
In 2020, at Mass Eye and Ear’s annual Naples program, John and Dottie heard Dr. ArboledaVelasquez describe a landmark breakthrough that was taking the Alzheimer’s scientific community by storm. In studying a population of people genetically programmed to succumb to early Alzheimer’s by their early forties, Dr. Arboleda-Velasquez discovered a woman, Aliria, who possessed two copies of a gene that provided her Alzheimer’s protection for thirty years. Despite her early Alzheimer’s predisposition and a brain full of amyloid, Aliria was cognitively healthy, thanks to two copies of the protective APOE3 Christchurch mutation.
Equally exciting, in 2024, Dr. Arboleda-Velasquez published findings in the New England Journal of Medicine of 27 additional people from the same population who possessed one copy of the APOE3 Christchurch gene. Each had delayed memory loss by five to seven years, further proving the gene’s protective properties and strengthening the case for its use in therapies.
Building on these breakthroughs, Dr. Arboleda-Velasquez is developing several drugs to protect the general aging population from Alzheimer’s, including an antibody treatment that mimics the APOE3 Christchurch protective effects. Studies in monkeys have shown great promise and the team is working toward starting human trials in 2026, making this work a top priority for philanthropic partners like John and Dottie. In parallel, Dr. Arboleda-Velasquez is developing a small molecule pill that could be a cost-effective solution for Alzheimer’s protection worldwide.
“John and Dottie’s remarkable generosity has been essential to propelling this research forward. Thanks to their partnership, we are developing treatments that could help millions of people with Alzheimer’s. I cannot thank them enough for championing our work,” said Dr. Arboleda-Velasquez.
“Alzheimer’s affects over six million people and their families in the United States alone. Despite decades of research, treatments have eluded scientists. Dr. Arboleda-Velasquez’s approach is novel because it is based on people who are naturally protected. We believe we are finally on the brink of a cure.”

Carrying forward the pioneering legacy of Amelia Peabody
Intellectual curiosity. Compassion. Innovation. These were the values that Miss Amelia Peabody held dear, guiding her work as an exceptional volunteer leader and philanthropist who dedicated her life to advancing many charitable causes, including science and medicine.
In 1958, as a member of the Mass Eye and Ear Board of Directors, Miss Peabody partnered with neurophysiologist Dr. Nelson Y.S. Kiang to create and execute a bold plan. They launched the EatonPeabody Laboratories (EPL), a world-class hearing and deafness program in the middle of an active clinical hospital, something that had never been done before. They envisioned EPL scientists would foster collaborations with the Mass Eye and Ear medical staff and faculty from MIT, Harvard Medical School and Mass General Hospital. Today, nearly seven decades later, the EPL has grown into the largest hearing research center in the world with 120 scientists studying every stage of the auditory system, resulting in life-changing treatments for patients.
In 1974, Amelia Peabody created the Amelia Pebody Charitable Fund (APCF) to carry forward her pioneering philanthropic legacy in perpetuity. The Fund has been an unwavering champion of the EPL, supporting fellow and doctoral students and recruitment of top investigators in the field of hearing. In recent years, the APCF furthered its commitment to advancing science through two landmark gifts to support the EPL’s first major renovation in 60 years. The grants funded a monumental transformation of the laboratories, revitalizing the space to meet the demands of cutting-edge research and enabling it to serve as a center for innovation, collaboration and inspiration for the next generation of hearing scientists.
Today, Amelia Peabody’s legacy shines brighter than ever, continuing to change lives and shape the future of auditory science. “Since its beginning, the EPL has been a first-rate research center embedded in the middle of a busy specialty hospital,” said EPL Director and Amelia Peabody Chair, Dr. Daniel Polley. “Sixty-eight years later, we can see the wisdom of that initial decision. Working alongside world-class physicians and patients motivates our research, and this new space will accelerate research to address the societal need for better hearing health care.”
Miss Amelia Peabody
Evangelos S. Gragoudas, MD
A lasting tribute to a beloved institution
Evangelos S. Gragoudas, MD, exemplifies Mass Eye and Ear’s commitment to excellence in patient care, research, and teaching. A native of Greece, Dr. Gragoudas completed his medical training in Athens before relocating to the United States for his ophthalmology residency at Boston University and a retina fellowship under Dr. Charles Schepens at Mass Eye and Ear. He then joined the faculty and began a lifelong commitment to the institution that would shape his career and his life.
Today, five decades later, Dr. Gragoudas is a giant in the field of retina and ocular melanoma. He is best known for developing proton beam irradiation for uveal melanoma, a treatment that is still one of the most effective and widely used therapies for cancerous eye tumors. He also helped develop photodynamic therapy with verteporfin, the first FDA-approved pharmacologic treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). And he was a key member of the group who identified the role of vascular endothelial growth factor in AMD. This discovery earned him and his collaborators the 2014 Champalimaud Vision Award and led to new therapies for AMD, helping millions of people worldwide.
Dr. Gragoudas’ greatest passion is teaching. As the former Director of the Vitreoretinal Fellowship Program for nearly 30 years, he trained more than 100 fellows from around the world and established several scholarships and professional societies. He earned a reputation as a generous, insightful and patient mentor.
To give back to the institution that shaped his career, Dr. Gragoudas made a very generous gift to endow the Evangelos S. Gragoudas Chair in Ophthalmology. This Chair celebrates his incredible legacy while galvanizing the careers of future leaders in retina. Ivana K. Kim, MD, MBA, Director of the Ocular Melanoma Center, and a mentee of Dr. Gragoudas, is the Chair’s inaugural incumbent.
“Dr. Gragoudas’ contributions to the department and the field of retina are extraordinary,” said Joan W. Miller, MD, Chair of Ophthalmology. “So many of us, including myself, have benefited tremendously from his work as a physician, researcher and mentor. The Gragoudas Chair honors his legacy in ocular melanoma research, teaching and patient care in perpetuity.
“Mass Eye and Ear has been more than my career. It has been my life. Professional collaborators and personal friendships— they’re all here. It’s the place that made me who I am.”

Victoria and Michael Chambers
Silencing tinnitus through philanthropy and innovative research
For Michael Chambers, tinnitus is a persistent challenge. Michael is one of 50 million Americans living with tinnitus—a condition that causes incessant ringing or buzzing in the ears. A long-time proponent of science and a highly successful entrepreneur, Michael channeled his concern into action after a chance meeting with Anne Takesian, PhD, a scientist at the Lauer Tinnitus Research Center at Mass Eye and Ear.
“Dr. Takesian shared her research on understanding how tinnitus originates in the brain and I was intrigued,” said Michael. Dr. Takesian introduced Michael to Daniel Polley, PhD, Director of the Lauer Tinnitus Research Center and Stéphane Maison, Aud, PhD, Director of Mass Eye and Ear’s new state-of-the-art Tinnitus Clinic. “The team approaches the problem of tinnitus with rigorous science and clinical research. Victoria and I were excited about the opportunity to help.”
In the laboratory, Drs. Polley and Takesian are focusing on restoring balance to the brain’s auditory system by enhancing the brain’s natural “braking” abilities to quiet the phantom sounds of tinnitus. In animal studies, specific brain circuits are being identified to silence brain hyperactivity, while human studies are exploring new ways to integrate auditory and tactile stimulation to dampen hyperactivity. Both approaches are helping to design noninvasive treatments to silence the noise of tinnitus.
Simultaneously, in the Tinnitus Clinic, Dr. Maison, a neuroscientist and audiologist, brings a specialized level of tinnitus care to patients who struggle to cope with tinnitus, while also forging new partnerships with industry to conduct clinical trials of emerging therapies.
Through a generous grant from the Centurion Foundation, the Chambers have made a significant investment to accelerate tinnitus research. “For the first time, we see a clear path forward in bringing experimental therapies to patients,” said Dr. Polley. “We could not be more grateful to Michael and Victoria for joining us in not only accelerating progress for new therapies, but also providing hope for so many who are living with tinnitus.”

“I, Joe, have been coming to Mass Eye and Ear for almost four decades after having a venal occlusion in my right eye. Since that time, I have undergone a series of eye operations and treatment. Mass Eye and Ear has, literally, saved my eyesight and has allowed me to live and thrive in a normal life. I am so very thankful we live near such a fantastic Institution.”

Team Eye and Ear
We are pleased to recognize the following members of Team Eye and Ear, Mass Eye and Ear’s running team, who together raised more than $740,000 in fiscal year 2024 for research and patient care at Mass Eye and Ear. These dedicated runners serve as ambassadors of the hospital’s mission, and we are grateful for their partnership. Since inception, members of Team Eye and Ear have raised more than $9 million.
