Honoring a legacy of excellence and friendship

Some friendships stand the test of time. That was the case with Eugene N. Myers and Herbert Silverstein who met more than 60 years ago at Temple University School of Medicine, where they began their journeys into the world of medicine. At the time, it was unbeknownst to them the far-reaching impact each would have in the field of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery (OHNS) and the interwoven path their storied careers would weave.

Dr. Myers and Dr. Silverstein had different plans after medical school. Dr. Silverstein planned to stay in Pennsylvania, but Dr. Myers convinced him to join him at the renowned Harvard Department of OHNS at Mass Eye and Ear, where they trained side by side under Dr. Harold Schuknecht and top leaders in the field.

Dr. Myers’ and Dr. Silverstein’s chosen subspecialties of head and neck surgery and otology/ neurotology, respectively, led them to different parts of the country. Dr. Myers went to Pittsburgh where he became Chair and built the prestigious Department of OHNS at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Silverstein moved to Florida where he founded the acclaimed Silverstein Institute and the Ear Research Foundation in Sarasota. Each became a trailblazer in his field, training generations of fellows and residents and authoring countless book chapters and publications.

Now, Drs. Myers and Silverstein have come together again as Honorary Co-Chairs of Mass Eye and Ear’s 200th Anniversary OHNS Celebration in July 2024. In honor of the formative training they received and the vital role of Mass Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School in laying the foundation for their careers, each has pledged to establish an endowed chair.

The inaugural holder of the Dr. Eugene N. and Barbara L. Myers Chair in Head and Neck Surgery is Daniel Deschler, MD, and the first incumbent of the Herbert Silverstein Chair in Otology/Neurotology will be announced in the future. “We could not be more delighted or proud to have endowed Mass Eye and Ear chairs bearing the names of these giants in our field,” said Mark Varvares, MD, Chair of the Department of OHNS. “They will inspire generations of doctors who follow in their footsteps.”

6

“It is our honor to be in the history of Mass Eye and Ear. Our life’s purpose has revolved around enhancing patient wellbeing through innovative teaching and research, and now we are thrilled to leave behind a legacy and invest in the people who will continue to change medicine.”

“I had the pleasure of knowing Hal as a colleague and a friend. His generous giving underscores his profound contributions to the retina profession and to Mass Eye and Ear. We are deeply grateful for Hal’s generosity, which will support important retina research for generations to come.”

Estate gift celebrates a life and career well-lived

With a career spanning more than five decades at Harvard Ophthalmology and Mass Eye and Ear, Hal Mackenzie Freeman, MD, was an institutional legacy. It is fitting that he made a very generous estate gift to pay forward his success and help cultivate the next generation of leaders in retina.

As a physician and surgeon, Dr. Freeman was a pioneer in the field of retina and vitreoretinal surgery and was sought out by patients from across the U.S., Canada and around the globe. A gifted surgical innovator, he began studying giant retinal tears early in his career, and treating patients with this condition ultimately became his life’s work. And as a superb educator and talented presenter, he approached his work with equal parts creativity and clarity, deeply committed to the education of his audience, including contributions to the New England Ophthalmological Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Retina Society, and the 175 retinal fellows he trained and mentored over the course of his career.

Dr. Freeman’s passion for teaching was rooted in his own training under the tutelage of Charles L. Schepens, MD, founder of Mass Eye and Ear’s Retina Service and the first-ever retina fellowship program, and world-renowned as the “Father of Modern Retinal Surgery.” Dr. Freeman completed a six-year fellowship in retina and vitreoretinal surgery with Dr. Schepens. Together, they developed the inversion table—an innovative surgical solution for repairing giant retinal tears. The table suspended patients face down above the surgeon, allowing gravity to unfold the retinal tear so it could be surgically repaired.

When planning his estate, Dr. Freeman was motivated to provide future generations of clinician scientists with the same opportunities for training and collaboration that he had with Dr. Schepens. Dr. Freeman bestowed the Department of Ophthalmology at Mass Eye and Ear with a tremendous gift, to be used specifically for research and teaching in the field of retina.

Exceptional care inspires endowed chair

When Andy Ansin first noticed hearing loss, he chalked it up to his freediving hobby or exposure to loud environments. He became concerned, however, when it became more difficult to hear, and he scheduled a consultation with Dr. Fred Telischi, a neurotologist in his hometown of Miami.

After confirming significant hearing loss in Andy’s right ear, the doctor ordered an MRI that revealed an unexpected diagnosis. Andy had a vestibular schwannoma, a rare, non-cancerous tumor of the balance nerves that can interfere with hearing. Turning to his network for help, Andy discovered Daniel Lee, MD, FACS, a leading otology and neurotology specialist at Mass Eye and Ear.

Dr. Lee confirmed Andy’s diagnosis and presented his options: surgery, radiation therapy, or monitoring for potential tumor growth and worsening symptoms. Considering the risks, Andy chose a “wait and watch” approach, visiting Dr. Lee annually for checkups.

Andy was impressed with Dr. Lee’s expertise and became interested in learning more about Dr. Lee’s passion: auditory brainstem implant (ABI) research. The ABI is a hearing rehabilitative option for patients who are deaf and for whom hearing aids and cochlear implants are not an option, such as patients with vestibular schwannomas. Dr. Lee’s research is aimed at refining ABI technology to improve hearing outcomes for these patients.

As co-trustee of his family’s charitable foundation, Andy was no stranger to the power of philanthropy in solving problems. He knew right away that he wanted to support Dr. Lee’s research, not only to thank Dr. Lee for all he has done for him, but to offer hope to others with profound hearing loss.

Andy and his family generously established the Ansin Foundation Chair in Otolaryngology, which will accelerate research to advance the care of patients who have otologic and lateral skull base tumors.

“My deep trust in the team at Mass Eye and Ear comes from the organization’s devotion to their patients’ well-being,” said Andy. “I am confident that with Dr. Lee at the helm, the Ansin Foundation Chair will make a critical impact on generations of people affected by hearing loss.”

“This gift from the Ansin Foundation is truly remarkable, and I am honored to be named the Ansin Foundation Chair. Andy and I share a passion for innovative approaches to complex conditions that affect human health, and I look forward to partnering with him to transform hearing technology for patients who are deaf from vestibular schwannomas.”

“At AMDF, we provide resources and tools for people with macular degeneration and their loved ones to lead their best-quality lives. Our support of scientific research is at the heart of that. We invest in the work of scientists to develop new treatments and findings that will help doctors in the clinic, all of which creates a real sense of hope within the community we serve.”

American Macular Degeneration Foundation

Partnering to conquer agerelated macular degeneration

For more than 20 years, the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF) has partnered with scientists at Mass Eye and Ear and the Schepens Eye Research Institute to accelerate research on age-related macular degeneration (AMD). With a mission to empower and inspire those affected by AMD while advancing research and technology to help prevent, treat and cure the disease, the AMDF has been a steadfast ally in Mass Eye and Ear’s commitment to eradicating AMD.

AMD is a progressive, degenerative disease of the retina that causes loss of central vision. It is the leading cause of blindness worldwide in people aged 50 and older, and by the year 2040, it is estimated that a staggering 288 million people across the globe will have AMD.

Mass Eye and Ear and Schepens scientists have contributed many discoveries toward reducing the disease burden of AMD, including developing the first two treatments for wet AMD— photodynamic therapy (PDT), followed by anti-VEGF therapy—as well as developing optical coherence tomography (OCT), the most widely used non-invasive imaging tool in retina. They are also leading studies on the impact of genetics, inflammation and lifestyle, among other factors that predict a person’s risk of developing AMD and their potential response to treatment.

For AMDF Founder and President Chip Goehring, this work has both professional and personal significance. At age 39, Chip was diagnosed with AMD. At the time, he knew very little about his diagnosis or what it meant for him. Today, through the AMDF, he aims to help other patients and their loved ones access resources to better understand their diagnosis and treatment, as well as raise funds to support research.

Scientists at Mass Eye and Ear and Schepens have benefited tremendously from AMDF support, which has accelerated research to develop cutting-edge gene therapies, to better understand factors that contribute to this complex disease, and to establish treatment protocols that could preserve the sight of many newly diagnosed patients.

“Philanthropy plays a crucial role in accelerating the research of our AMD scientists,” said Joan W. Miller, MD, Chair of Ophthalmology at Mass Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School. “We are deeply grateful to the AMDF for its generous support over many years, which has and will continue to fuel this ongoing work and help save the vision of countless people.”

Championing the life-changing mission of Mass Eye and Ear

Growing up in the Boston area, Rich Aldrich knew Mass Eye and Ear as one of the world’s best hospitals for specialty care. However, it was years later that his relationship with the hospital became personal, inspiring Rich to become a true champion of its mission.

After attending Boston College and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, Rich moved back to Boston where he launched a successful career in biotech, as an executive at Biogen and then a founding employee at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. His passion for developing novel solutions to address important medical problems led him to co-found RA Capital and then Longwood Fund, which both invest in science-based health companies.

In 2002, Rich joined the Mass Eye and Ear Board of Directors and served for 12 years, including two years as Vice-Chair. “Being on the Board, I got to see firsthand and truly appreciate the novel, out-of-the-box thinking of Mass Eye and Ear physicians and scientists as they researched some of the most challenging medical conditions of our time,” said Rich. “Their passion and determination to develop new life-changing treatments were inspiring.”

While Rich was on the Board, his father suffered a central retinal vein occlusion, which caused him to gradually lose his vision. Rich witnessed Mass Eye and Ear’s compassionate care in action as his father received the help he needed to keep functioning, and most importantly, retain his ability to read. “My father was a voracious reader. He read two newspapers a day and always had one or two books going,” said Rich. “It was a blessing that, despite his vision loss, he was able to keep reading during the later years of his life.”

These experiences, both personal and professional, led Rich and his wife Nichole to become enthusiastic and generous supporters of Mass Eye and Ear.

“Mass Eye and Ear is the incredible place it is today, thanks to so many people who give their time, talents and treasure generously,” said Mass Eye and Ear President CarolAnn Williams. “We could not be more grateful to Rich and Nichole for championing our work and for the many ways they have helped Mass Eye and Ear succeed.”

“We believe Mass Eye and Ear is the best hospital of its kind. We are amazed and inspired by its care of patients and are proud to be supporters.”

The 1824 Circle

Unrestricted giving affords Mass Eye and Ear and the Schepens Eye Research Institute the flexibility to embrace new opportunities and address immediate priorities. To encourage unrestricted philanthropy at the leadership level, The 1824 Circle was established as a special recognition group within The Reynolds Society. Membership is reserved for friends who make unrestricted gifts of $12,500 and more during the fiscal year. Mass Eye and Ear thanks the following 1824 Circle members for their gifts made between October 1, 2022 and September 30, 2023.
