MASSEY COMMUNITY PULSE

Ah, the summer edition arrives. With it the colours and warmth of a new season, and the promise of rest and relaxation over the holiday period. I fondly remember childhoods when not only schools and businesses shut down, but shops too. The whole country went into ‘chill mode”. There was something about that that was delightful. A collective time out from the busy-ness of the year that blanketed the country in days that melted into each other without care for having to be anywhere or do anything.

and hang out under a tree to read for a day. Create a treasure hunt for your kids and get them active outside. Set up the hose in the back garden for some splash time to cool off. Just take some time to forget about doing, and just be. Mostly, be kind to each other, celebrate and give gratitude for what you do have, and the people in your life. Happy Holidays everyone.

Taking time out is an important part of well-being. How will you create that for yourselves and your whanau these holidays? If you have to work, remember time out can be as simple as packing up a picnic and heading to one of Massey’s marvellous parks for your day off. Take a blanket and a book

Here at Massey Matters we’re sending the hard working team home for some time out. We are shutting down from the 22nd December and will be back on the 8th of January.

“Kia mau kit e tu manako, te whakapono me te aroha” Hold fast to hope, faith and love

Happy holidays everyone.

HUBS UPDATE

Manutewhau Community Hub The year that was...

Dreaming about 2018:

Welcome back to all our wonderful community members reading this.

2018 is going to be the year of community connection, satisfaction and growth.

What a year it has been! A new government, new community members, new groups, new activities and a whole lot of new friendships built at the Hub.

We want you to know your neighbours, be happy with where you live and be reaching your full potential!

We have really enjoyed re-starting our community lunches this year. We got to meet so many new people in the community over some shared kai. We have been blessed to have so much love sent our way through donations of food, time and effort from our community members who helped make these events special. With the end of the year fast coming up we are looking forward to the break over Christmas to recharge and do some serious planning for next year.

We want 2018 to be our best year yet, which means we need you! We can’t do our job without the community of Massey, so whatever you’re dreaming of... Make it known so we can start helping you achieve those dreams!! We are here to help empower you to make your dreams a reality, so the more you talk to us, the better we can do our jobs. We are looking forward to seeing you in the Hub for a cuppa, or on Facebook telling us all about your vision for Massey.

If you have any ideas on the kinds of groups, Kia Kaha Massey. activities or events you want to see around Wishing you a safe and happy Holiday Massey, then make sure you let us know. season from Tina and Samantha

WEST Means Business Christmas is a Great Time to Buy Local! At this time of year I find I inevitably spend more, whether it is a small Christmas gift for work colleagues, food for the Christmas family lunch, or organising well overdue odd jobs as the weather improves and we venture into the back yard. Small changes in the way we purchase during the holiday season can make a huge difference to our local economy. Supporting small businesses located in our community - such as local artisans, food and wine makers, tradespeople and cafes helps these businesses to grow and ultimately employ. This in turn supports our wider community through job creation and small business start ups. So this holiday season I am going to do my part as a small piece in the local economic jigsaw. My aim is to purchase 100% locally. Of course some things I won’t be able to purchase locally made (I don’t know of any local DVD manufacturers) but I can purchase a bottle of local pinot noir, or locally made soaps to give as gifts at Christmas. And to make purchasing local a little easier WEST have a searchable online directory of small local businesses – visit www.westmeansbusiness.co.nz for products or services available in your local area. If you know of a local business that isn’t on the directory please let them know about it - it’s free to advertise and they can join via the website.

MASSEY YOUTH CAN

Haunted House The MYC Project Team had loads of fun injecting their creative talents into making the Haunted House a stand out event. The team put together an amazing project for our participants to walk, feel, hear and sense the spooky vibes of our track of doom. It was very unlikely our community participants were to come out unsatisfied. We had exceptional feedback on the event and cant wait to get the next event under our belt. As the Team grows, so do the quality of the events. Stay tuned and make sure you get to our next event! Drop In Our Sunday drop in has been moved from Sunday to Tuesday at 3.30pm at Triangle Park... a pure space to activate our lovely park triangle and make this the heart of Massey for Youth. Come down, hang out, meet the team and grab a sausage while you’re at it. MORE INFO Contact Allen Taua ph: 021 826 314 youth@masseymatters.org.nz MYC – Massey Youth

Manutewhau Hub Garden Have you checked out our amazing before and after pictures from our working bee? What a difference some new ground cover and soil can make. We want to give a huge shout out to all the community members who participated and showed up to help us celebrate conservation week. We were lucky enough to have Eco Matters come down as well and take the awesome kids from room 17 at West Harbour School down to the river. The kids got to have a look at the bio-diversity in the stream and also helped us collect some rubbish from the Manutewhau reserve. We also had some delicious yoghurts donated from The Collective from their Forest and Bird collaboration. These yoghurts show pictures of extinct native birds to help educate our young ones about how to better protect our lands so we don’t lose any more. Overall, we had an amazing day filled with good people, good food and a good outcome.

Above: the amazing after shot of our renewed and refreshed veggie patch Right: the before picture of our sad dead garden..

If you are into gardening then come down to check out our new and improved community plot. It is free to participate in and the best part is that your hard work gets to feed not only your own families, but also the wider Massey community. We planted a huge variety of veggies that should be fresh and ready to pick in the New Year. Looking forward to seeing you when you come down to enjoy the harvest with us. Nga Mihi The Hub team

HENDERSON–MASSEY LOCAL BOARD

Update We need another pool in the northwest. That’s the main message our board will be delivering to Auckland Council’s Governing Body as they determine what will get funded in the next 10-year Budget. In February and March next year, council will be consulting Aucklanders about what it should prioritise for funding for the next 10 years. Each local board gets to pitch for one big thing they want for their area. For 7 years straight, our Board has submitted on behalf of Massey residents for a public pool. Auckland has 27 public pools, and the West only has 1. Our area desperately needs another pool. While West Wave is in our area, it is bursting at the seams. Last year, West Wave had 1.2 million visitors from all across the city, and on track for 1.5 million this year. During school holidays, kids are left waiting in lines going all the way to the carpark. It’s not fair, and it’s not acceptable.

The current and future population growth in Massey, including the Red Hills and Westgate areas, means this facility is an urgent project. The population is already large, and predicted to grow by another 40,000 in the Northwest. A new facility will also take a while to get off the ground because a lot of planning will need to go into it with regard to location, facilities, design, etc. The sooner we can be certain of support and funding, the sooner we can start the process. When I’m out and about or when looking at online comments, I have the sense that there is strong support for a pool in our area. So I urge you, our community, to make submissions during the budget consultation in February and March supporting this pool. The more voices that make themselves heard, the more chance we can get a pool. Shane Henderson, Chair Henderson-Massey Local Board

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Triangle Park Pop-In Day We held an Pop-In Day during the last school holidays to get some feedback from you guys about what you would like to see in Triangle Park to make it a better place for whanau and community to play and relax in. We had a huge amount of ideas from the community with quite a few coming through that were along the same lines. We are in the process of putting an application for funding based on these ideas. Look out for updates about it on our Facebook page.

SNIPPETS & STUFF

What’s On This Holiday Season YMCA will be continuing to run their Youth Burn free workout sessions. Every Wednesday 4 – 5pm, free for 13 to 18 year olds. They will also be opening up their youth hub and stadium for free throughout the summer holidays, details on specific times will be posted up on the raise up Massey Facebook page and website. Northwest Mall have free Face Painting over the holidays. Little Whoo? A very large box arrived at Colwill School Massey and out of it came a Little Hoot – an Owlet now being painted by some Colwill kids. The Little Hoot will then join its flock of other Owlets and 46 Big Hoots (decorated by some of NZ’s famous artists including Dick Frizzell, Flox and Jeff Thompson) and be part of the ‘Wild in Art’ Haier Big Hoot Trail around Auckland City next March. An Auction of the Big Hoots is for raising funds for Child Cancer NZ. Colwill’s Owlet represents the school’s many cultures in its design, and will include Colwill’s pukeko ‘Manaaki’ who stands for being kind, caring and careful, as well as clever, curious and creative – just like Colwill kids! There were a number of senior students who came up with the designs and carefully worked on their part. Every child in the school will have added at least a feather!
