MASSEY COMMUNITY PULSE

Tena Koutou Katoa Massey Whanau! Massey Matters has come out of the basement and is now happily based at Massey Community Hub on Don Buck Road. The move has been massive, physically and emotionally! There are a lot of people to thank; Henderson Massey Local Board, Auckland Council, Massey Matters Governance Team, Christine MacFarlane, Warren Flaunty, the Massey Matters Team, and you, the community we are here to serve, for your patience as we adjust to our new digs, and new ways of working. What excites us most is that we are now visible to you; and we are now able to dream together. The thing is, what you want matters to us. About a hundred of you have told us what you want through the surveys we recently conducted. Thank you! We are currently collating these. The next step is explore ways we work together to achieve what you want. We challenge you to continue to engage with us, to participate when we have events, ask you to comment on Facebook, any way we ask you to tell us what you want, we challenge you to walk with us, and help us make it happen. As an organisation, we can set the aspirational framework for what you want, but we can’t ‘get there’ without you stepping up and working with us to achieve it. So what do you reckon Massey… are you up for challenge of contributing to creating the Massey you want to live in? Ma te wa, Laurel

Youth Voice Massey Youth: we want to hear your voice! Are you a high school aged youth in Massey looking to unleash your inner leader?

The MYC vision moving forward is to grow our community of youth and provide space for them to get together in constructive ways.

Looking for opportunities to get involved in the community?

Come down to the Massey Community Hub on Wednesdays from 3.30 – 5pm to get involved.

Then we are the crew for you! Earlier in August the MYC crew were invited to Kiwanis lodge in Huia for a youth voice camp. At the camp we were joined by 5 other Youth Groups from Ranui 135, MPHS, Glen Dean, Te Atatu and Zeal. The camp was all about unleashing your inner leader and our crew has identified that we need more opportunities for youth in Massey to be able to get involved and to be heard by the community.

My vision is that we build a new Pacifica Learning Center here to educate children and parents. Any tips for parents who are unsure about how to get their tamaiti started in Early Childhood Education? Visit different centres and find one you trust. Think about what you want for your tamaiti when they grow up. Look for a center that will help you achieve that. For some aiga they worry about the fees. Hubs Garden Calling all Massey Community Members: Did you know it’s Conservation Week 14th – 22nd October. The theme this year is Healthy Nature Healthy People. We’re using this time to promote the beautiful natural resources we have in our Triangle Park Community community and give them the love they Teaching Garden deserve. We are planning a rubbish clean up in the Manutewhau Reserve, a gardening working bee at the Hub and a shared lunch with kai harvested from our garden. Well, it may not be the best weather to be spending time in the garden, though it hasn’t stopped our regular bunch of beavers! Well done to our garden team for keeping things in shape at Triangle Park. Winter is a good time to ‘cut back’ your perennials, divide and replant your rhubarb, plant out ‘new’ strawberries, the runners that formed in summer, and make compost from all your locally sourced ‘free’ materials. HENDERSON–MASSEY LOCAL BOARD

Update Auckland’s population is rapidly increasing, and like most Westies I have huge issues with the cost and supply of housing. The Red Hills area of Massey has been zoned for housing to help meet this demand, and you may have seen the announcement of $300 million of funding for infrastructure in Redhills and Whenuapai. This will bring forward the construction of 10,500 new homes.

It’s only fair that funding should go where the growth goes.

This fund will help fund the basic infrastructure like wastewater and stormwater, and is also likely to be used on basic roading. Proposals for this include extending Fred Taylor Drive and Northside Drive, an update and realignment of Trig Road and a new bridge crossing to the West Harbour ferry terminal.

Consultation on the draft HendersonMassey Local Board plan closed at the end of June. We received 241 written submissions, an increase of more than 37 per cent on the number of submissions from the previous local board plan consultation in 2014. A full 70 per cent of submitters agreed or strongly agreed that the board is on the right track. I’d like to thank Henderson-Massey residents for sharing their views. The plan will be adopted at a board meeting in October and will be available on the council website in December. Stay tuned for progress.

Your local board is happy that we can provide more homes to meet this housing crisis, but we will be fighting for the right public facilities to make these developments successful. We feel that a dedicated busway from Westgate to the CBD is more important than ever, with a stop at Massey providing more transport options for the community.

We are also fighting for a public swimming pool in the Northwest. West Auckland has only one public pool, and Massey residents have trekked down to Henderson for too long. We appreciate the support of the community on these issues from Massey folk old and new. Thanks for your feedback!

Shane Henderson, Chair Henderson-Massey Local Board

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Vinetta

Massey Community Network Kia Ora, my name is Vinetta and I am the newest member of the Massey Matters team. My role is Community Activator. It’s all around getting out there amongst you and finding out what you would like to see and do in your community and then helping you turn those visions into reality! I’m really excited about this role as it combines several things that I like doing; meeting new people, helping with projects and being part of something that can make a huge positive impact in the community. My background is in working with small businesses, assisting not-for-profits and other community organisations, events, fundraising and networking. I just

love to help people with what they are passionate about, whether that be a personal, professional or group passion. I grew up in Massey and went to Massey Primary and Massey High School so I know the area well. If you see me either at Massey Matters or out in your community, please come and introduce yourself and let me know your thoughts on how we can make Massey a thriving place to live, work, play and grow in. SNIPPETS & STUFF

Where to go when you need to know – Citizens Advice Bureau Massey Most of us have been in a situation where we need information or want to know about our rights but do not know how to get the answers. Some people think that Citizens Advice services are only a signposting organisation, putting people in touch with other services that are better placed to help than the local CAB. Far from it!

The Gift of Fun! Colwill School Massey was, very generously, gifted a large amount of Lego from Auckland City Mission… enough to fill a hatchback with the seats down! It has been most appreciated in the senior school as a wet day activity – something we need at the moment! Colwill School wishes to thank Auckland City Mission for the Lego donation, also The Warehouse, Westgate for helping us out with the Lego storage containers. This was written by Lego in the 1970s. They had the right idea… “The urge to create is equally strong in all children. Boys and girls. It’s imagination that counts. You build whatever comes into your head, the way you want it. A bed or a truck. A dolls house or a spaceship. A lot of boys like dolls houses. They’re more human than spaceships. A lot of girls prefer spaceships. They’re more exciting than dolls houses. The most important thing is to put the right material in their hands and let them create whatever appeals to them.”

Citizens Advice provide a quality information service based on accurate and up to date information that assists people in making complex decisions to improve their life. We can help put you in touch with services in your community. We also carry a wide range of pamphlets on all sorts of topics – feel free to help yourself to any of these from the racks outside our offices – next to the library. We have a range of other services available too – Budgeting on a Monday morning from 9am until 11… just call in. We also run a service where people can see a local lawyer for 10 minutes, for advice on what may be their best next course of action. And every weekday we have Justices of the Peace from 1pm until 3pm. No appointment needed, just bring your documents with you. If you think you may be interested in joining the friendly team at CAB Massey visit us in the Massey Library Building, cnr Don Buck Rd and Westgate Dr, Massey phone us on 833-5775 or email us at massey@cab.org.nz
