Zabeen Tena Koutou Katoa Massey Whanau! Make yourself a cuppa and sit back to enjoy reading your Pulse magazine. It is packed full of events and activities that we create for you as opportunities to connect with each other, and have some learning or fun on the way. From Boot Camps to get fit, to knitting for good… what will you try? Community is the foundation of our society, and you are the foundation of community. Massey Matters is all about making Massey a thriving place to live, work, play and grow. Knowing what you want, need or dream of, helps us to create events, programmes and activities that are of value to you. To help us make sure we are doing just that, we are undertaking Community Consultation.

This will include some door to door knocking, an online survey and pop up events. We can’t wait to meet you and hear what it is you want! I keep thinking of that Bob Dylan song, The Times They Are A Changin’, because they are. Massey Matters is very excited to be moving to the Massey Community Hub. We have some big dreams! You will find more in the following pages. I would like to leave you with a whakatauki He aroha whakato, he aroha ka puta mai / If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you will receive. Ma te wa, Laurel

community hubs update

Exciting things are happening this term but we need you to get them up and running. Are you passionate about getting a community orchard up and running? Are you new to Massey and want to learn more about what we have to offer? Have a cool skill you want to share, or want to discover new ones? Interested in gardening but don’t have the space? Then the Hub is the place for you. Massey can only be built stronger by the strength of the community. Our community spaces are only as good as the connections of the people in them. Come into the Manutewhau Hub and claim your community space to make it what our community needs. Your town, your voice, your strength, your outcomes, your results. Participation is the key to community and we offer the space to get involved. Come in and see what we have going on, or better yet, let us know what you want that we don’t have yet. Dream big Massey and we will work with you to make those dreams come true. #participation #Masseyproud #manutewhauHub #communityconnection Kia Kaha

This year the Hub hosted the 2nd annual Neighbours Day. Here you can see the local neighbourhood kids doing chalk drawings on the wall and showing off their face paint. The kids had a great time meeting new friends and eating the yummy food.

Lincoln Heights Hub The hub has been open since May 2013. Our activities include; Te Reo class, Budgeting, basic computing skills, cooking sessions, card making, Easter hunts, clothing swap, license class, West Work Ready, and Cuppa Kit Project (aka neighbours day). The clothing swap began in 2013 by asking the community to donate their unwanted items and swap for the items that we have in the hub. This is still going strong today. We have other organisations take free classes like West Work Ready, Eco Matters seminars about how to keep your power and water bills down. We ran the Boost Course for 7 weeks to help the Community learn about Leadership and how to plan and participate in community events. It has been a very emotional yet satisfying journey to help others meet their needs.

MASSEY MATTERS

Massey Matters is Moving

Million Dollar Trusts Mission

Massey Matters is on the move. We are transitioning to the Massey Community Hub and will be fully moved in by July 1st. This is hugely exciting for us. Our current premises is bulging at the seams as the team grows, and its location remains a mystery to many of you. Being at the Hub means you, the community who we serve, can now easily find us! Our doors are open to you so come and visit us anytime. We look forward to meeting you and getting to know you.

A huge thank you to all of you who voted for us in the Million Dollar Trusts Mission. We received $16,785 towards our dream of a community van for Massey. We will continue to fundraise until we reach our goal and can purchase a van.

We would like to acknowledge the work of Christine MacFarlane who has been managing the Hub for the last two years, and is fully supporting its transition back to being community led. Christine’s work means we are able to transition seamlessly, and hit the ground running as everything is in order. More importantly, this means current users of the facility can be assured little disruption during this time. To find out what is happening at the Massey Community Hub, check out Massey Community Events on the back page.

Congratulations to all finalists, including Leataata o Tupulaga Preschool, Massey Athletic Club and Raise Up Crew Massey. Thank you to the Trusts for their continued support of West Auckland Community groups and for dreaming up a fun way to involve everyone.

Our New Website is Live! Finally, the much needed update of our Website is completed. It now contains all up to date information on what’s happening, what services we provide, who we are, and how you can find us, how you can get involved… and more! Jump online and have a look, it’s gorgeous, if we say so ourselves! www.masseymatters.org.nz

youth update

Youth Drop In (Basketball Workshops) Every Sunday, 3.30 – 5pm The Massey Primary School Hall Youth Drop In is our regular Sunday workshop where we work with Coach Joe to develop Basketball, Tag, Sports, Interaction and Leadership skills. With five years background Joe has a great foundation and understanding in basketball and loves to share his knowledge in this field. This is an excellent opportunity for our Youth to stay active and join the next phase of being in our MYC Leadership group.

Shoot Out Competition Details still to be confirmed Last year we spent over $1000 in Prizes, gathered over 100 participants from the community, connected with Raise Up and Zeal’s Fresh Dance Crew and had a hell of a time shooting ball! We had room for a three vs three and two vs two mini comp. Last Year’s Winner Matthew Hinton will be looking to retain his Number 1 spot as the Massey Shoot All Out Comp Champion. This year we are more than excited to say it’s on again. Registrations start in July

MASSEY YOUTH CAN

Youth Voice and Selfie Exhibition Every Wednesday 3.30 – 5pm The Massey Community House Every Wednesday our Youth leaders come together to co create something special for our community. Our next project focus is our massive event “The Youth Voice Project”, this project is combined with our successful selfie exhibition that encourages youth to express their unique selves, and take part in having a say in Massey. Thanks to the Henderson-Massey Local Board we have been granted funds to create a voice for our youth and we are excited to make this a big one, full of video interviews and social selfies photos. We are excited to see how the youth will respond, knowing that they also have a say and a place in Massey.

INTRODUCING

Vivs Jone Where were you born? Sheffield, UK What brought you to NZ? I married a “Westie” in the UK, we came for a visit, settled in Massey and have never moved. How long have you lived in Massey? For 36 years, and raised three children here attending local schools!

I was active in Massey Matters as a resident from 2006 but I became formally involved in 2009, joining the Advisory group/now governance committee. I am a foundation member of the Triangle Park Community Garden in 2010, and I worked for many years as Manager of Barnardos Waitakere and more recently at Waitakere Workers Educational Association (WEA)/WEST we provided Driver Education, First Aid, and Sustainable Living classes in Massey. We also partnered with Massey Matters to develop the Massey Employment Gateway programme to support residents into local employment, and the Massey Means Business network to grow small businesses.

What is your favourite secret about Massey? I love Moire Park and walking the Manutewhau track – a treasured bush location yet we live in such a built up area! We are lucky to have so many green spaces What is your vision for gardening in in our area, plus easy access to many beaches Massey? and the Waitakere Ranges. I’d like to see all our community gardens as a central point where we all share & learn – Tell us what you do in the community? skills, food, a meal, our time! Did you know I am just starting as a Massey Food Hub we have four gardens in Massey that all Project Coordinator, trying to improve food residents can join? accessibility for our families, by connecting community gardens, groups, foodbanks and Gardens become a social network, and we the residents of Massey. In 2014 a survey in share the skills with our children. the Massey west area highlighted issues for families re food scarcity, and my task is to Check out our Backyard Garden Project too check out the issues then and now, across – as an opportunity to grow healthy food in all Massey, to identify and support solutions. your own garden.

TATOU TE IWI – OUR PEOPLE

What is your favourite garden item to grow? I’ve had so many over the years, usually when I’ve been shown a vegetable by someone, with their personal tips on growing and cooking it. Kumara, artichokes, Thai eggplant, herbs, rocket, and leeks - the list is endless! Any tips for fledgling gardens? Just do it! You’ll be amazed how much you can grow in your own backyard, with a bit of planning. Join your local community garden, as we have a few in our area. There you can learn more ideas to take back to your own patch, but if you’re anything like me you’ll really enjoy the company of other gardeners – we’re all learning together. I enjoy seeing the wide range of different plants other people grow, and how they eat and cook them. If you could give one piece of advice to whanau, what would it be? Plant something, water & weed it – it will grow in this climate! Chinese proverb: The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today.

Neighbours Day Cuppa Kit Project This year both the Manutewhau Community Hub, and the Lincoln Heights Hub, hosted High Tea parties for Neighbours day. The idea of the event was to bring the community together as one, and to be a way of getting to know your neighbours in a fun enjoyable environment for the whole family. Together we created a place that the community could come along to and connect with each other and enjoy some community made food, drinks and fun games for the kids. There was even some awesome spot prizes to be won. In support of the event, we had the pleasure of having on board The Massey Mens Shed. They had their Massey famous wooden car making and race track which was a huge hit. We also had the lovely Maya Gaudin Kasupene, who was our face painter on the day. I would like to thank everyone that supported us in making the day happen. A massive shout out to all the volunteers and everyone one who participated.

NEIGHBOURS DAY

Neighbours Day 2017 at Woodside Community Garden Riverpark Action Group held a Neighbours Day event at Woodside Community Garden on 1st April. The theme was “Neighbours enjoying the neighbourhood amenities with fellow neighbours. Thanks Community Waitakere / Henderson-Massey Local Board for their $200 contribution. We wished to create an environment where adults could relax and children could be occupied with activities. Massey Matters lent us giant jenga and connect 4. Mike created plaster frogs and seahorses for painting and the children also painted river stones to hide around Woodside Reserve #westierocks. Two gourds that we grew were also painted up beautifully. Our stream (Lower Swanson Stream) provided space for people to cool down in a tranquil bush background. Regina and Michelle from Sport Waitakere gave advice about hosting a Healthy BBQ that was tasty and healthy. Thank you Neighbours for popping by; Woodside Community Garden welcomes you anytime. As a parent-run cooperative, Playcentre is a space where children can play and learn alongside other children of mixes ages, their siblings, parents or caregivers. It is a safe place where children feel safe with their special adults around, while growing in independence from them.

Hubs Garden The Manutewhau Hub is currently looking for volunteers of all ages and skill level to help us with our thriving Community Garden. Did you know the Hub has a garden out back? We need people who want to help share their wisdom to grow our budding garden. Come have a potter around the vegetables, feed our worms or help tend to the compost. Once the vegetables are ready, they are free to take home. Or if you are feeling creative, why not cook them up in our kitchen to share with the community? Pop in for a visit and to find out more, we’re open from 9.30am – 3.30pm Monday to Friday or phone us on 416 9397.

Massey Community Men’s Shed The Massey Community Men’s Shed has recently helped out with some jobs at the Triangle Park Massey Community Gardens. A new worm farm frame has been created, signs have been put up, an outdoor seat/ platform seat has been built and a broken window was tended to. The Men’s Shed currently meet at the Manutewhau Hub on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7pm. For more information contact Andrew on 027 516 6415

GREEN FINGERS

Who Would Like Their Own Veggie Garden? Only 30 Places Available!

Triangle Park Community Teaching Garden

We are working with the My Backyard Garden Project to find Massey families interested in starting a veggie garden at their place. It’s an opportunity to grow your own healthy food at low or no cost… and to keep doing it!

It’s Autumn… and, we have the beds filling up rapidly with our winter cropping varieties. Thanks to the participants of ‘Grow your own Pantry Plot’ workshop last Saturday, we now have two beds filled to the rim with brassicas (cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, rocket, kale), leeks, spring onions, beetroot, carrot, parsnip, peas, silver beet and an array of winter greens… plus, not to forget our winter herbs – dill, coriander and parsley.

As part of this project you will enjoy – A 1200 x 800 garden box plus soil and plants delivered for free – Four workshops showing what you need to do to grow great veggies – Shared harvest meals with other families – Regular “growing challenges”… with prizes! Could this be you? Would this be good for your children? Contact Viv for more details: 021 117 0402 or tv.jones@ihug.co.nz Check out My Backyard Garden project on Facebook – they have built literally hundreds of gardens in West Auckland and Rotorua.

Moist conditions in the garden bring the return of our least favorite garden dwellers, the slugs and snails. The best way to reduce their numbers is to head out with your torch in the evening and pluck them off all your tiny seedlings before they are completely demolished. Second to that is to set up your beer traps beside your newly planted seedlings. Here’s how: Cut the end off a drink bottle. Then, sink into the soil so that the rim is level with the soil level. Fill with beer, or a sweet yeasty solution. Check the traps and empty often. Contact Judy Keats, Garden Coordinator, at Triangle Park Garden for details on workshops and gardening sessions. ph: 021 635 607 1greensister@gmail.com

HENDERSON–MASSEY LOCAL BOARD

Update From your elected representatives A bright future for Massey Henderson-Massey Local Board recently approved the funding agreement and licence for Massey Matters to occupy and manage the Massey Community Hub at 385 Don Buck Road from 1 July 2017. This will allow Massey Matters to be more visible in the community. Board member Vanessa Neeson say: “I know that Massey Matters is going to do some outstanding work to benefit the local community.” Ground breaking for Westgate Construction began recently on the new Westgate Multipurpose Community Facility.

Top – L to R: Waitakere Ward Councillors Penny Hulse and Linda Cooper, Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair Shane Henderson. Bottom: Artist’s impression of the Westgate Multipurpose Community Facility by Warren and Mahoney.

“Westgate and the surrounding area are growing fast. To support this growth, we need to provide high-quality community and social facility infrastructure,” she says. Tackling homelessness In March, Auckland Council and the government announced the Housing First Auckland programme, which aims to address homelessness across the region. Waitākere Ward Councillor Penny Hulse, who chairs the Environment and Community Committee, says she’s excited about Housing First’s potential.

Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair Shane Henderson says the multipurpose facility will help meet the needs of the community.

“The Housing First model is not just about getting people into homes – it’s about addressing some of the causes of homelessness by providing wrap-around support services.”

“It will be a part of a new generation of council facilities that are flexible and that provide a range of features, from a kitchen and community garden, to event and library spaces,” he says.

“Council is working with five partners: Affinity Services, Lifewise, Auckland City Mission, LinkPeople, and here out west, trusted community organisation VisionWest,” says Cr Hulse.

Waitakere Ward Councillor Linda Cooper says Westgate is a key area of development for Auckland.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Massey Community Network

Massey Residents’ Forum

The Massey Community Network continues to be held every second month. The first network meeting of the year was really productive with residents and organisations setting out the priority conversations for the network over the year:

The Massey Residents’ Forum is a new initiative by Massey Matters to provide a platform for residents to express their wishes for Massey and find out what’s happening in our local community.

– Youth Mental Health – Inclusion of diverse communities in Massey – Job skills and training in Massey area – Waste Minimisation We also hope to take up these conversations at the Massey Residents’ Forum. Please get in touch with us if you would like to participate in the residents’ forum or the community work.

The forum was a response to residents that attend the Massey Community Network for an evening event. Good ideas are always welcome at Massey Matters and so we’ve enthusiastically taken up the opportunity to reach out to more people through the forum. We want all our residents to be able to participate in what we do and are always keen to hear your feedback on any of our programmes. The first Massey Residents’ Forum took place on Tuesday 4th April. We are very grateful for the residents and members of our business community that came out in the stormy weather. The Forum was a great opportunity to talk about what people would like to see in Massey. We look forward to hosting more forums. Forums take place every second month. The next forum will on June 6th 2017. Save the date!

Farewell, Noa It is with great sadness we acknowledge the passing of a treasured member of our community, Noa Fusitua. Noa’s mission was to see everyone in Massey fit and healthy, through his M.T.B Fitness programs and personal mentoring to help people lose weight. Our aroha goes out to Noa’s whanau and friends.

SNIPPETS & STUFF

New Chicks at Colwill One of Colwill School Massey’s Year 7 / 8 classes has had the fascinating experience of rearing ten chickens – from incubation and hatching out of the eggs, seeing the newly hatched being wet and weak then so cute and fuzzy, to watching the flight and tail feathers starting to develop. Along the way the children learnt about being kind, careful and caring as well as experimenting with some of the amazing things that eggs have been used for such as egg tempera paint and pavlova! An art work, named CosmosPollitan, by Colwill School Massey students became part of Auckland’s White Night display – a festival of arts and lights showcased in various locations around the city on one Saturday night in March. They created a patchwork of old CDs that they had painted then used the sgraffito technique to scratch their own cultural patterns onto the surface. The artwork was displayed at Greenwoods Corner where it glistened in the sunlight or headlights of cars heading to the airport – a link to where the 32 different ethnicities at Colwill had entered Auckland. From a distance it dazzled, up close the detail was exquisite.

Self-defence Classes The Massey and Birdwood Settlers Association Hall is the scene for many activities. Two of the activities are involve classes for self-defence. Aikido classes take place on Monday night starting at 6.30pm. The instructor is one the Associations executive members, Craig Andrew. The classes start with very simple warm up exercises before students start practicing some of the moves. Students have the ability to work through the grades from white belt to black. This is similar to the other self-defence class, Kung Fu. Like Aikido Kung Fu is classic martial arts class. The Kung Fu instructor is Jason King and Kung Fu classes are held on Thursday nights starting at 7pm. The above photo shows Craig Andrew demonstrating an Aikido move.
