Evangelos S. Gragoudas, MD Celebration & Dinner
Please join us on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston for a special reception (5:30PM-7:30PM) followed by a private dinner (8:00PM-9:30PM) honoring one of our most distinguished clinician scientists, Evangelos S. Gragoudas, MD. This June, we are celebrating his 50 years of service at Mass Eye and Ear, as well as the 50th anniversary of one of his major clinical innovations—the development of proton bean irradiation for the treatment of uveal melanoma.
Dr. Gragoudas first joined the department in 1974 as a retina fellow under Dr. Charles L. Schepens, and became a full-time faculty member one year later. He earned the rank of Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical school in 1994 and became the first incumbent of the Charles Edward
Whitten Professorship in Ophthalmology in 2011.
Today, he is a world-authority on the diagnosis and management of retinal diseases and intraocular tumors, and his work has led to sight-saving treatments for millions of people worldwide. In addition to pioneering PBI, he co-developed photodynamic therapy with verteporfin for the treatment of intraocular tumors and ocular neovascularization, and anti-VEGF therapies to treat blinding eye diseases. During his years as Director of the Retina Service at Mass Eye and Ear, Dr. Gragoudas helped transform the service into a preeminent center of excellence that is now one of largest retinal subspecialty groups in the country.
As director of the Vitreoretinal Fellowship Program for nearly 30 years, Dr. Gragoudas earned a reputation in our department as one of the most generous, insightful, and patient mentors. In recognition of his generosity, his former fellows Drs. John B. Miller and Thanos Papakostas founded the Gragoudas Society.
To help celebrate Dr. Gragoudas’ long and influential career, we are asking his trainees, colleagues, and friends to send photos and short quotes about his career to be included in a slideshow during the event, just send to Ophthalmology_Events@meei.harvard.edu. You don’t have to attend the celebration to contribute to the presentation (but we hope you will!).
