ABOUT THE PROFESSORSHIP
The Frederick A. Jakobiec Professorship in Ophthalmic Diseases was established to honor the academic leadership of Frederick A. Jakobiec, MD, DSc, the Henry Willard Williams Professor of Ophthalmology, Emeritus, and Professor of Pathology, Emeritus at Harvard Medical School. From 1989 until 2002, Dr. Jakobiec served as Chair of the HMS Department of Ophthalmology and Chief of Ophthalmology at Mass. Eye and Ear. From 2007 to 2021, Dr. Jakobiec served as Director of the David G. Cogan Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory at Mass Eye and Ear, where he reinvigorated and expanded the laboratory’s mission in clinical care, teaching, and research.
Board certified in both Ophthalmology and Anatomic Pathology, Dr. Jakobiec was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Medical Science Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division Award for the textbook, Albert & Jakobiec’s Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology , the 1999 McLean Medal from Weill Cornell Medical College, the 2008 Pfizer Visiting Professorship in Ophthalmology, and the 2017 Merrill Reeh prize from American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He presented over 45 named lectures, co-edited eight textbooks, and wrote over 300 peer reviewed papers and 100 book chapters.

Tatyana Milman, MD is currently a Professor of Ophthalmology and Pathology at Thomas Jefferson University and Wills Eye Hospital. She is certified by the American Boards of Ophthalmology and Pathology. Dr. Milman’s research interests include clinical-pathologic correlations in ophthalmic pathology and resident education. Dr. Milman has over one hundred published peer reviewed articles and has contributed chapters to several key volumes in the field of Eye Pathology, including World Health Organization Classification of Pediatric and Eye Tumors and Genetic Tumor Syndromes, ARP/AFIP fascicle on the Tumors of the Eye and Ocular Adnexa, Albert and Jakobiec’s Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology, and Duane Ophthalmology.
Dr. Milman currently serves as a lead author of the College of American Pathology Cancer Protocols on Uveal Melanoma and Retinoblastoma and on the American Joint Committee on Cancer Ophthalmic Protocols Section. Dr. Milman has been awarded Certificates of Appreciation from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Ophthalmology for her service on various committees dedicated to maintenance of certification and education in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Pathology. Most recently, in 2020, she received a Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She is a recipient of numerous Ophthalmology Resident Teaching awards for her instruction in Ophthalmic Pathology. Dr. Milman is a member of the American Ophthalmologic Society and Eastern and Verhoeff-Zimmerman Ophthalmic Pathology Societies, and is the Vice President of the American Association of Ophthalmic Oncologists and Pathologists.
