e are enjoying a positive start to the school year and are very pleased to welcome more than 110 new students who represent 25 different nationalities, as well as 15 new staff members to our Marymount School Community.

Over the summer we learned that our students once again achieved strong IB results, scoring well above the world average. This is not surprising, given the strong commitment our students demonstrate to their IB courses, and they deserve to be congratulated, but I would also like to recognize Marymount’s faculty

members, who prepare our students so thoroughly for these important exams.

The Institute of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) was founded in Béziers, France, in 1849 by Ven. Père Jean Gailhac and Mère St. Jean. From its very foundation, the first religious community was drawn to the educational apostolate. Since that time, the RSHM have been engaged in the ministry of education in 16 countries on four continents.

At the RSHM Network of Schools Implementation Conference held in London this summer, we chose from among the RSHM’s Goals and Criteria for their schools the goal of “Fostering a Personal Relationship with God” as our school focus for this year. This goal provides the opportunity for all of us from many faiths to reflect upon our personal

beliefs and how we choose to present ourselves to the world.

You can learn more about this goal in this issue of Marymount Monthly.

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in training in Béziers, France with the Heads of School and Board members from our Marymount Network related to our schools’ missions and our future. We spent time discussing and exploring ways to provide leadership and support as our schools strive to achieve their missions. I look forward to continued work in

Meet the

Principals

The Elementary and the Secondary schools both have new leaders this year. Mr. Robert Evans, principal of the Secondary School, arrived this summer bringing a wealth of experience in international education. Mr. Evans, who is American, has worked in international schools in Europe, Asia, and Africa for much of his career, instilling in him an appreciation for the diversity of our world. Sr. Michaeline O’Dwyer, who is serving as the Elementary School principal in an interim capacity, has a long history with Marymount starting in the 1970’s when she was a science teacher and principal. Sr. Michaeline, who is originally from New York, returned to Rome two years ago and has been a warm and caring presence on our campus ever since.

Sr. Michaeline O’Dwyer Elementary School Principal Sr. Michaeline O’Dwyer, who began her new ministry as interim Elementary School Principal in August, is not new to Marymount International School. In 1970, she came to Marymount to teach Science in the High School and served as the school nurse and House Mother for the boarding students. In 1976, she was appointed Principal of the High School and served in that position until 1984. Sr. Michaeline looks upon those fourteen years as wonderful and memorable.

Last year as Alumni Coordinator, she had the opportunity to be back in touch with many of the students whom she knew during her

earlier tenure at Marymount and also got to know students who were at the school before and after that time. She hopes to be able to continue this contact, if only on a limited basis, this year. Now she begins another very special ministry, working with the “youngest and the littlest” of our Marymount students and with their parents and teachers.

The school’s Vision Statement says that “... we strive to develop students who are capable, honest, and respectful, and, who are prepared both academically and spiritually to be lifelong learners and leaders of tomorrow.” Additionally, the Mission Statement says, “It is

our goal that a Marymount student should desire to celebrate God’s love, respond generously to the needs of our world, and promote justice and dignity for all.” Sr. Michaeline hopes that we continue to do so. She is also grateful for the faculty and staff who teach and care for our young children and who respond so generously each day to their needs.

Her other hope is that she will get to know the names of each of our students and their parents before too much time goes by. She invites and encourages parents to visit, call, email her with any questions, concerns, suggestions or to just drop by to say “hello”.

Mr. Robert Evans Secondary School Principal obert Evans is excited and pleased to join Marymount International School as the Secondary School Principal.

During 24 years in international education in schools in China, Scotland, Taiwan, Tunisia, India, and Korea Robert has had the opportunity to work with many great students, teachers, and parents while enjoying the adventures and diversity of the global environment. Through friends who are former Marymount families and principals, he knew that joining this community would be a similarly rewarding experience.

Robert earned a BA in Biology from California State University Sonoma and an MA in Science

Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Kansas. He has taught math, science and computer science and served as Director of Technology in international schools. For the past 15 years he has been a principal in middle school and high school and a head of school.

Robert’s wife, Cathy, has taught middle and high school science and is also a school counselor but will enjoy Rome and more individual pursuits this year. Together, they look forward to visits from their grown son and daughter as well as triplet 8-year-old granddaughters and other family and friends who are eager to experience Rome.

Magdalena Arias Duval

A California native, Karyn Wynn began teaching First and Second Grades in NYC after a career in journalism. She also worked with the Teach for America and the Teaching Fellows programs, hiring and training teachers to serve lowincome schools. In 2008, Karyn moved to Malasia to lead Early Childhood and teach Kindergarten at the International School of Kuala Lumpur. She also served on CIS accreditation teams and coached soccer. Karyn has a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Mercy College and a master’s from the University of San Francisco in Educational Leadership as well as a certificate in school administration. When she’s not at school, Karyn likes to play tennis, listen to music, and travel.

Mersedeh N. Cerasoli is a double graduate from Art Center College of Design in California with a BA in Product Design and from the University of California Irvine with a BS in Studio Art. She joins us from Istituto Marymount on via Nomentana where she was working in Early Childhood.

While she was living and working in New York, Mersedeh started Nour New York; her own private label collection of sunglasses. Nour celebrity followings include Charlize Theron. Her daughters are students in Second Grade here at Marymount. In her free time, Mersedeh enjoys practicing bikram yoga, hiking, and making the world a better place.

Originally from Argentina, Magdalena Arias Duval has traveled with her family since she was young and lived in Florida, Mexico, and Italy. She completed a BA in Education as well as an MA in Teaching English to Young Learners at The University of York in the U.K. In 1997, she returned to Italy where she worked as a freelance EFL teacher in Milan for 12 years. In 2009, she joined the International School of Milan as the Primary School ESL teacher and Learning Support coordinator.

Magdalena enjoyed her time in Milan but is very excited about living in Rome and working at Marymount. She loves exploring new places, meeting people, learning languages, and cooking, but most of all she enjoy nature and outdoor sports.

While she was born on the west coast of the United States, in San Diego, California, Catherine Hain has spent most of her life on the east coast, specifically in Connecticut. She graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BA in French and went on to earn her Elementary Teaching Certification from Eastern Connecticut State University.

She has taught Kindergarten, Enrichment, and Fourth Grade.

In her spare time, she loves to read, walk, garden, travel and listen to music.

Emma White, a native of California, is very excited to join the Marymount team this year. Since earning her Bachelors degree at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2005, Emma has taught early childhood at international schools in five different countries in Europe and Asia. She began at the English International School of Padova, and her most recent post was with the British Council in Hong Kong. She is overjoyed to be back working in Italy again after seven years.

In her free time, Emma enjoys jogging, visiting friends and family, and traveling. She has been to nearly 30 countries and speaks three foreign languages.

Hua Bai is delighted to become a new member of the Marymount community.

Originally from China, Dr. Bai lived in Geneva for a short period before coming to Rome.

She finished her university studies in Beijing and then in Rome, after which she completed a Ph.D in Naples.

She has taught Chinese Language at Rome University for more than 10 years. Dr. Bai expects teaching Chinese Literature at Marymount, while challenging, to be a pleasant experience for her students and herself. She credits traveling in Italy and Europe for helping to widen and enrich her interests in literature, history and painting.

Former actor and theater professional Michael Clark is an artist and designer from London with degrees in Drama & Theatre Studies from Royal Holloway College, University of London and The Theory and Practice of Fine Art from Chelsea School of Art, The University of the Arts, London.

Not entirely a new face at Marymount, Michael has volunteered for the last two years to produce scenery and props for the Fifth Grade musical performances of A Little Princess and Beauty and the Beast. He found the experience of working here at Marymount so inspiring that he welcomed the opportunity to return here on a more permanent basis. This is his first teaching position.

Fiona Marshall

Brenda Delany is a 15-year veteran middle school teacher who joins Marymount as a social studies teacher for Grades 6-8. Born in the US, Brenda has taught in Arizona as well as Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, where she taught English, gifted education, and social studies to Grades K-9. While overseas, she traveled with students to many different countries and feels that being able to see and experience such places lends to a positive and enriching experience as an educator. Her favorite hobbies include hiking, history, culinary adventures, and – while here in Italy – seeking out the best gelato!

Samantha Hardin is originally from Houston, Texas but long had a desire to pursue her education outside of her native state. She received a BA in English literature from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. In 2010, she completed an MA in Romantic and Sentimental literature at the University of York in England. While at York, her research focused on the Romantic writers who were inspired by and wrote about Rome in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Samantha is certified to teach English as a foreign language and has had two years of experience teaching in a private language school. As an incurable lover of Rome, Samantha feels privileged to be able to combine a passion for teaching literature with a passion for the eternal city.

Rachel Maloney Hawkins grew up in Maine and received her undergraduate degree in Secondary Education and Mathematics from the University of Maine. After spending time teaching in Maine and completing her Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of New England, she relocated to teach in Barcelona. Most recently she taught math in Tianjin, China. In her free time, Rachel enjoys the beach, visual arts, learning languages, and running. She is excited to become a part of the MMI community.

Fiona Marshall was born in Scotland, grew up in the South of England, and after graduating from the University of London, Goldsmith’s College in the late 70’s, moved to Milan with her Italian husband-to-be.

She has been teaching in international schools in Italy ever since, first at the International School of Milan then, following her family’s relocation in 1981, here in Rome. Fiona was a founding member of Core International School before moving to Rome International School when it opened and remained there for many years, mainly teaching Middle School English in its Secondary Department. She has three grown-up daughters, all educated at international schools and universities and now living and working between Rome, Milan, and London.

Welcome Back!

Jeffrey Martin

Federica Kurera

Jeffrey Martin grew up in Michigan and received his M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering at Michigan Technological University. He then spent seven years designing autopilots for unmanned rockets, which put satellites into orbit for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the U.S. and for various private companies.

Subsequently, Jeffrey spent three years at a Zen monastery, and after his experience there he decided to transition into teaching. Jeffrey has previously taught math and science at private schools in New Mexico and most recently New York City. He is also a strong chess player.

Federica Kurera is a native of Rome although her family is originally from Sri Lanka. After finishing high school here at Marymount, she moved to the UK to carry out and finish her undergraduate degrees in health and human sciences and psychology and criminology. Federica’s interests included reading, cooking, and traveling.

Classmates Connect S

Middle School orientation program helps to build camaraderie tudents in Grades 6, 7, and 8 got to know themselves and each other a little better at the start of the school year thanks to a three-day orientation program in the Middle School.

The theme of the orientation was "Making Connections,” and in this case the connections extended from those within the students themselves to their peers, teachers, the greater Marymount community, and the community at large.

Each grade level took turns spending one day on campus and two days off, one of which featured a visit to the Treja

Adventure Park near Lake Bracciano while the other included a visit to a home for the elderly run by the Little Sisters of the Poor.

During their day on campus, the students engaged in a variety of activities with School Psychologist Dr. Fornabia, such as exploring, identifying, illustrating and sharing their "Hopes & Dreams." Many of these aspirations were focused on academics, such as improving math skills or language proficiency, while others were more social in nature, such as making new friends. Their illustrations are on display in the Middle School hallways.

The students also participated in entertaining and creative activities led by Drama teacher Ms. Ferrarin, including one exercise in which they linked arms in a sort of human jumble and then had to untangle themselves – a task more challenging than it might at first seem and one that requires a surprising amount of ingenuity and teamwork.

After a busy morning, the students were happy to take a break for lunch, which featured an American-style barbeque outside on the patio, and in the afternoon they had a chance to unwind even more while watching a film in the auditorium.

eanwhile, swooping across the treetops on a suspended ropes course at the Treja Adventure Park, the students gained an appreciation for the value of determination and encouragement. They also learned the importance of following instructions as the staff at the park demonstrated how to clip in to the ropes properly with their carabiners to stay safe and secure throughout the course.

Once outfitted with harnesses and helmets and after a trial run on a practice rope, the students spent several hours climbing to great heights, rappeling through the trees, crossing a variety of suspended (and very wobbly) bridges, and generally testing their stamina and nerves while happily offering moral support to their fellow classmates.

Many of the students had been to the park before during previous years’ orientations and put their familiarity with and experience on the ropes to good use by providing tips and encouragement to the newer members of the class.

After completing the course, which increased in difficulty the further it progressed, the group settled down on the park’s expansive deck for a picnic lunch and experienced again the security of having one’s feet planted firmly on the ground.

students into the neighborhood around the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains) for a visit to a home for the elderly run by the Little Sisters of the Poor. For a few hours in the morning, the students visited with the residents of the home, hoping to add a little more sunshine to their days by sharing stories, playing bingo, and singing songs together. Following their visit, the class enjoyed a picnic lunch in Villa Borghese.

I

n addition to these engaging activities, each class took responsibility for coming up with new lyrics to a pop song in order to express their thoughts and feelings about school and their own place within the Marymount community. Having prepared and practiced their songs over a few days, the entire Middle School assembled on Friday afternoon to perform them and recap the week. Much to the delight of everyone, the Middle School

faculty brought the house down when they came out with their own surprise performance.

By the end of the week it became clear that the students did indeed make important connections and took a further step together toward our school’s overall goal for the year: “To foster a personal relationship with God.”

Good news for the

IB Changes to the International Baccalaureate program offer greater flexibility to students

his past summer, the educational landscape changed significantly for students at Marymount wishing to pursue the highly desirable International Baccalaureate Diploma. On July 9, 2012 the Italian Ministry of Education officially approved Marymount's IB curriculum based on a new set of standards enacted in 2010 as part of a national education reform movement.

The new standards, which affect all schools in Italy, allow our Italian students to have greater flexibility in their course choice. Furthermore, all our Grade 11 and 12 students now enjoy the possibility to have an IB Diploma legalized by the Italian state.

It is worth noting that Marymount itself played a significant role in shaping this

landscape as a principle player in the high-level discussions that led to the new standards.

The curriculum for the IB Diploma Program is renowned for its rigor and for providing excellent preparation for matriculation into colleges and universities worldwide.

Marymount began offering the IB program in 1985, and was one of the first schools in Italy to do so.

While the program proved to be a great benefit for those wishing to pursue higher education abroad, the government of Italy did not initially recognize the IB diploma as equivalent to an Italian high school diploma.

Consequently, Italian students wishing to pursue an IB Diploma were excluded from entrance to universities in their

own country unless they chose to attend high school abroad.

This situation changed for students at Marymount when, in 1992, the Italian Ministry of Education officially recognized the IB Diploma offered at several international schools in Italy. Recognition was contingent upon students completing specific requirements not normally required under the IB Diploma program but roughly equal to requisites for Italian matriculation. This included a course in Italian Math (which differs in terminology and approach from a typical IB math course) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) in Italian.

These and other curricular requirements mandated by the Italian government put Italian students at a competitive

disadvantage by requiring them to take extra courses on top of those already required by the IB as well as limiting their ability to select IB courses based on their personal strengths and interests and with the same freedom as that enjoyed by their classmates from other countries. n the fall of 2009, a member of the Italian Parliament (and Marymount parent), Gabriella Carlucci, began working with our school to address this inequality. Marymount's IB Coordinator, Lucy Alexander, became a principal contact between the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) and Italy's Deputy Minister for Education. She also submitted on behalf of the IB and our school various statistics, reports, and

supporting documents to help make the case for changes in the Italian requirements.

In the spring of the following year other international schools in Italy joined Marymount in this effort, and in July 2010 the Italian parliament passed a decree eliminating the Italian Math and Italian TOK requirements. Four education strands were created that Italian students could follow in which the IB Diploma course choices align with curricula offered in Italian high schools.

These strands include Language, Science, Classics, and Humanities.

While a cause for celebration, these changes in the curriculum requirements could not be put into practice until schools offering the IB in Italy applied individually to the

Ministry of Education to have their curriculum specifically approved as conforming to the new law. Marymount quickly set the wheels of this process in motion, and this past July the Ministry notified our school of its approval.

lthough this effort on behalf of IB schools throughout Italy took a number of years and a substantial commitment of staff resources, the end result is greater flexibility for Italian students in the courses they choose to pursue and greater flexibility in scheduling for our school. The change also means that many of the top Italian students at international schools have the choice to remain in Italy to pursue higher education rather than be limited to attend universities abroad.

Santa Susanna The

Community at Marymount

n almost every Sunday morning of the school year, the Community of Santa Susanna Church at Marymount celebrates Mass at 11am in the Marymount Chapel. Everyone is very welcome to participate in this Sunday liturgy, which is geared to the family, especially children. Everyone who attends is invited to register as parishioners of Santa Susanna Church and participate in all of the other Masses and programs both here and at Santa Susanna on Via Venti Settembre in Rome’s historic center.

The Paulist Fathers serve the Santa Susanna and Marymount communities.

Fr. John Duffy is vice rector of Santa Susanna and Marymount’s Chaplain, and Fr. Greg Apparcel is rector of Santa Susanna and Chair of the Marymount Board of Regents.

Marymount’s Confirmation candidates will receive this sacrament on May 11, 2013 at Santa Susanna, while the First Communion Mass will take place on May 4, 2013. More detailed information on these sacraments is forthcoming.

The atmosphere of the Sunday 11am Mass is very welcoming and lively, and afterwards

everyone has a chance to visit and make new friends over coffee, juices, and treats.

This fall, Fr. Greg is offering six Spiritual Walking Tours of historic Churches in Rome on Thursdays, which began on September 20. He is also offering four Spiritual Enrichment Sessions for Parents on weekday mornings in October at Marymount.

All of the proceeds for this wonderful evening go directly to nine specific Roman charities which assist the poor, refugees, AIDS patients, orphans, mentally and

F

orming a human circle of more than 700 people, Marymount students, faculty, and staff joined hands in a display of school unity to celebrate International Peace Day on September 21.

The first in a series of monthly activities highlighting world issues on Marymount’s Global Calendar, the celebration took place during a particularly turbulent period in world affairs

The entire school joins hands to celebrate International Peace Day

as a new wave of violence spread through North Africa and the Middle East. Last month’s gathering on the school’s front lawn included a moment of silence as members of our school community prayed for peace throughout the world.

Volunteer at the Caritas Soup Kitchen

Inspired by the words in our school’s Mission Statement, “It is our goal that a Marymount student should respond generously to the needs of the world and promote justice and dignity for all,” we are once again organizing groups of volunteers to serve lunch at the Caritas Soup Kitchen in Colle Oppio, near Termini Station. Last year, students, faculty, and staff volunteered at the soup kitchen one Saturday a month for five months.

This year we would like volunteer every month and include parents as part of our team. The service entails being present at the soup kitchen from 10:15 to 14:30 to help greet guests, serve meals, and clean up. The dates are already fixed: October 13, November 10, December 1, January 19, February 9, March 2, April 20, and May 11.
