was pleased to welcome so many interested parents to our first Head of School/Board of Regents Coffee on November 22. This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss in detail the vision for Marymount International School Rome and, as always, to receive valuable feedback from parents, upon which we can reflect and act.

For an overview of our school plan, please see the article called “The Path Ahead” by our Curriculum Consultant, Kathy Daulton, on page 10 of this issue of the newsletter. The article provides the context for our five-year plan and summarizes its key points. Marymount hosts an evening for student support professionals n November 15, the Special Needs Department hosted a gathering of Student Support professionals from several of the international schools in Rome. Attendees gathered in the Villa conference room for an aperitivo and enjoyed the opportunity to network and socialize.

During the second part of the program, the Marymount Special Needs Department, composed of Aimee Fenneman, Gaby Spadaro, Flaminia Vitali, and Megan Hallam, facilitated a group discussion regarding department structures, service provision, and the interpretation of recent Italian laws regarding services to students with special needs.

The group also identified key areas of focus for future meetings.

This collaborative meeting of support professionals coincided with School Psychology Awareness Week.

Student support professionals from Rome’s international schools gathered at Marymount last month during School Psychology Awareness Week.

additional coffee meetings in February and May to provide further updates and benefit from your feedback. Specific dates and times are forthcoming.

The theme for this year was, “We’re all in! Teams Work!” In addition to promoting a community team of Support Professionals, the Marymount School Psychologists, Megan Hallam and Flaminia Vitali, focus on helping students and colleagues develop and utilize team and community-building skills. This aim is part of their role in helping students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally.

Recent school psychology activities include classroombased lessons on anger management, empathy, assertive communication, and cyberbullying. Upcoming projects include a school climate survey and a positive psychology program focused on gratitude.

The Legacy of

L

ast month our school celebrated the birthday of Fr. Jean Gailhac, the founder of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary. Born in Béziers, France on November 13, 1802, Jean Gailhac entered the seminary at the age of 18 and was ordained as a priest in Montpellier in 1826.

Returning to his hometown, Fr. Gailhac assisted the less fortunate and provided shelter and meals to women who had fallen into a life of prostitution.

In 1849, he established the Institute of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) with the help of his longtime friend, the recently widowed Appollonie Cure, who later became Mother St. Jean.

Grade 3 students help lead a commemoration of the RSHM founder

Fr. Gailhac The RSHM proved to be Fr. Gailhac’s enduring legacy.

Over time the order grew beyond Béziers in size and scope throughout the world. To this day, the Sisters continue to advance Fr. Jean Gailhac’s vision in the areas of education, social and legal services, pastoral work, justice, and the arts.

To mark his birthday this year, students in Grade 3 created a brief presentation about the life of Fr. Gailhac, which they shared with all grades in the Elementary School. The presentation included their original artwork depicting seminal events in Fr. Gailhac’s life as well as examples of the way his legacy lives on.

Rise and Read!

Rise and Read continues to attract many parents and children each month. Please join us in the Elementary School Library on Friday, December 13 and enjoy the experience for yourself. A report called Findings from the National Literacy Trust’s 2011 Annual Literacy Survey stated that “…although parental involvement has the greatest effect in the early years, its importance to children’s educational and literacy outcomes continues into the teenage years. In addition to physically reading to them, parents can show their children that they value reading as a worthwhile activity by not only encouraging their children to read but also by being seen to be reading themselves.” During Rise & Read we serve drinks and snacks.

Grade 2 students gain insight into how communities work

We Are a Community econd Grade recently dressed up as workers in the community for the day.

The dress up day was a way of concluding our study about the meaning of community. The student dressed in outfits representing various occupations, explained the roles that they have in the community, and identified the skills that make them successful in their work.

A Gladiator’s Life in Ancient Rome

O

n November 5 the Second Grade went to visit a Roman museum on the Appia Antica. We went to study how an ancient Roman community operated and the life and training of a gladiator in particular.

We learned that the life of a gladiator was very hard. Most gladiators were slaves or prisoners. They trained in a gladiator school that was called a ludi and their trainers were called lanistae. Gladiators took an oath that said, “ I accept the whip, the sword, and the branding iron.” They entertained people, a bit like wrestlers today. Gladiators fought each other and wild animals. Did you know that women were also gladiators?

We did some gladiator training. We jumped over a rope of fire and weaved our way through hanging swords! (Not really!)

Parents lend their time and talents in the Elementary Art room

When Parents Pitch In ccording to the National Association of Education, when schools encourage parent involvement in their child’s education through volunteer programs, they foster a supportive community, and student achievement improves.

This fall, a number of parents volunteered their time in the Elementary Art room working directly with students on several creative and charitable projects.

“Working beside my daughter was magical,” parent Monica M. explained. “It brought back memories of my childhood and made me feel young again as I covered my hands with paint and glue. I felt like I was on the same page with my daughter, sharing in the creation of her school project while listening to the students’ and parents’ different opinions and challenges, and celebrating when we reached our goal. I am grateful to have had this experience!" Her daughter, Giovanna added, “I am happy that my mother volunteers at school. I like it when we do something together because it's fun. I enjoy showing my mom all the things we do in art class, and I like looking at my mother when she paints.”

A special thank you to Third Grade parents, Ms. Cozza, Ms. Jallier, Ms. Markely, Ms. Mongiello, Ms. Silva, and Ms. Waugh, who worked with their children to create the scenery for the Grade 3 Christmas show, which takes place on December 6. Parent participation on this project was not only very helpful to the school but also very fulfilling for the parents and their children.

Parent volunteers model the value of community service for their children, and many of our students have taken service to heart. For example, as the Christmas season is an especially important time to remember those less fortunate than ourselves, Third and Fourth Grade students created handcrafted holiday cards, which were professionally printed and sold as a fundraising initiative for Zambia. Proceeds from the sale of these cards helps the RSHM missions in Zambia address the educational,

nutritional, and health needs of a great many people in Zambia, children and adults alike. A special thank you to Debbie Kjolberg, our PTO representative, for her dedication to this project.

We also extend our thanks to Giada Orsini and Donatella Gniuli, who worked with Grade 2 students to create an impressive Nativity scene.

Secondary School fall play focuses on the complexities of communication

All in the Timing

Trotsky’s demise would seem odd material for a comedy sketch, but in “Variations on the Death of Trotsky,” one of seven comedy sketches that make up David Ives’ All in the Timing, audiences can’t help but laugh, first at Trotsky’s unfortunate appearance and then at the way he defiantly ruminates on the circumstances of his own

assassination over the course of eight scenes or “variations.”

This sketch and others in the production manipulate the elasticity of time, giving characters the opportunity to reformulate and re-articulate their thoughts, sometimes with broad strokes, as with the Trotsky scenes, and at other times in rapid fire succession, as in the sketches “Sure Thing” and “English Made Simple,” which also remind us how a choice of words can ignite or extinguish the potential for human relationships.

To underscore the idea that communication transcends the use of words, another sketch called “The Universal Language” demonstrates that the musical nature of speaking can influence understanding,

as a listener finds meaning in the rhythm of a phrase even when the words are mere gibberish – or nearly so when spoken in Ives’ Esperanto-like language called Unamunda.

Conversely, in “Word, Words, Words” three chimpanzees communicate to the outside world through grunts and screams while among each another they are wholly

So recites the character of Trotsky’s wife as she reads an encyclopedia entry to her husband, who is curiously still living despite the mortal wound to his head.

articulate as they ponder and discuss the experiment in which they are the subjects, namely to prove that even they, if given an infinite amount of time, could eventually produce the text of Shakespeare’s Hamlet by hitting random keys on a typewriter.

Going even further down the rabbit hole, Ives takes us to “The Philadelphia,” a world in which one’s desires are fulfilled only if expressed as the opposite of their true intent.

Once again we confront the notion that communication is a tool that we can manipulate in a given situation to satisfy our needs.

The issue of personal identity comes into play in “Mere Mortals” as Ives questions the ways in which we may or may

not present our true selves to those around us. In this sketch, three construction workers on their lunch break reveal to each other that they are in fact the Lindbergh baby, the son of Czar Nicholas II, and the reincarnation of Marie Antoinette, or so they say.

The Marymount Players’ production of All in the Timing, which ran for three

performances last month, featured an ensemble cast of talented students and a hardworking backstage crew who kept the show running like clockwork, all under the direction of Secondary School Drama teacher Gina Ferrarin.

Bravi to the cast and crew and many thanks to all of the students, teachers, staff, and parents who helped with the production.

n November 13, the day that the Marymount community celebrated the birthday of RSHM founder Fr. Gailhac, Italian Literature 9 students welcomed to their class Elementary ESL teacher Ms. Magdalena Arias Duval. This visit provided the students with the opportunity to learn about the contemporary meaning of pilgrimage, which they are studying at the moment as part of the Literature Program. With an inspiring presentation about her personal journey and wonderful photographs, Ms. Arias Duval spoke about her experience following an ancient pilgrim route of El Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

Our studies in the field of medieval literature in Italian Literature 9 opened the door to a unique experience for everybody in our class. As we delved into the aspects of medieval life, we explored the age of long,

arduous pilgrimages to holy cities, and we discovered that we could benefit from the story of a modern day pilgrim. While Ms. Arias Duval was telling us about her wonderful journey, she reminded us of a few life lessons that we forget nowadays due to modern-day living. She reminded us “… to leave the road behind and only look forward.” The strongest message she shared with us was that “… when the journey is over you come back to reality, but you always have to remember the memories and lessons of the trip.” With her voice in our ears we were inspired to learn more about this topic.

A guest speaker provides insight into one of Italy’s great poets

During our study of the Italian poet Eugenio Montale (1896-1981), our Italian Literature teacher, Mrs. Iorio, gave us the opportunity to be inspired by a man whose knowledge on the poet is vast.

After becoming acquainted with Montale’s life and work in previous lessons, we reached a new level of understanding thanks to the details Mr. Ventura shared with us in his lecture. He spoke about the evolution of Montale’s thoughts and how to recognize and trace this evolution in his works.

Emiliano Ventura is the author of the book Montale, Luzi, Pasolini – Questo nostro Novecento (2012). On October 31, Dr. Ventura visited us in class and helped deepen our understanding of Montale by giving us new insight into the

Mr. Ventura also shared some fun anecdotes describing Montale’s personality, including the fact that he called his wife “mosca” (“fly”). This was to show the extreme irony in Montale’s subtle descriptions of

the world and the way in which he was in constant search for answers. This anecdote and other details about his life and interaction with others reveal the person behind the poet we study in books. Montale was sarcastic, ironic, and a provocateur; he did not insult yet he provided judgment, criticism, or opinion with wit and wisdom behind his words.

Mr. Ventuna’s lecture helped to shape our knowledge of the poet’s many aspects, not only those that emerge through his works.

ast month saw several demonstrations of Catholic social teaching in action, starting with the outpouring of generosity for relief efforts in the areas of The Philippines hit hardest by Typhoon Haiyan. The students who organized the fundraising initiative collected a total of €2,829. These funds will support the purchase of sorely needed medical supplies.

Thanks to everyone who responded so generously to the needs of others.

Also last month, Grade 10 students worked together to prepare and send parcels to two RHSM Sisters, Sr Doris Tendai Russell and Sr Kathleen Murphy, who are in Zimbabwe

providing education to pupils who had fallen between the cracks and missed out on an education. The parcels contained stationery, reading books, and educational posters all donated by various institutions. In all some 56 Grade 10 students helped to sort and mail the parcels.

Lastly, we are grateful to the 11 pupils and parents who volunteered last month to serve the men, women, and children who receive sustenance at the Caritas Soup Kitchen at Colle Oppio. Additional opportunities to volunteer at the soup kitchen are listed on the schedule at right.

Reaccreditation process serves as guide for continuous improvement

e Path Ahead arymount is in the final stages of its reaccreditation by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). During the accreditation process, representatives from CIS and NEASC evaluate our school based on a range of educational and organizational standards and ensure that these standards are met. The accreditation process also helps us look closely at the way Marymount operates on all levels, from curriculum design to safety procedures, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.

The process for Marymount’s reaccreditation began with an extensive self-study to examine many facets of our school and see how they measured up to CIS/NEASC standards. In March 2013, a visiting committee from these two organizations spent nearly a week on campus observing and interviewing students, faculty, staff, parents, and board members as a follow-up to our self-study.

At the conclusion of their visit, the visiting committee paid the school many compliments but also listed a five areas in which further action was necessary in order to ensure that

Marymount fully met their prescribed standards. They are:

1. The development of a strategic plan aligned with the school’s vision and mission.

2. The creation of a plan for curriculum design, articulation, implementation, and review across all grades and subjects.

3. The development and implementation a school-wide assessment policy to analyze student progress.

4. A revision of the school’s faculty and staff appraisal system.

5. The development of a school-wide professional development plan and policies.

Since May 2013, faculty committees associated with each of these areas have met regularly and will continue their work in the second semester to determine and implement the necessary actions to respond to these recommendations.

This month the committees will submit progress reports to CIS/NEACS. The area perhaps most visible at the moment to our larger school community is the Marymount Five-Year Strategic Plan, which outlines the long-

The plan took shape over four months by a task force led by the Board of Regents using best practices of global companies. The objectives articulated in the plan flow from the Marymount Mission and Vision and reflect the Mission and Goals of the RSHM Network of Schools.

Additionally, the plan incorporates the CIS/NEASC accreditation self-study data and the visiting committee’s recommendations.

The six main objectives outlined in the plan, which are listed in the box above, touch upon diverse aspects of our school, from the composition of our student body to a forward-

looking curriculum to a sound financial outlook.

In fact, the entire faculty is contributing by documenting their programs into Atlas, a digital curriculum mapping system. When finished, our curriculum picture will be visible and more easily evaluated and adjusted. We look forward to sharing our continued progress at meetings for parents in February and May 2014.

It is important to keep in mind that we are engaged in this process ultimately to ensure that Marymount students receive the high-quality, 21stcentury education that they truly deserve, and that all of us have a role in making this possible.

econdary School Italian teacher Giovanna Iorio has published a new collection of poems inspired by the city of Rome, called Una Venere nel Tevere (CFR 2013). The Associazione Culturale “Villaggio Cultura – Pentatonic” organized an event on November 24 to launch the book, which includes a preface by noted Italian philosopher Remo Bodei. Congratulations, Ms. Iorio!

n essay by Secondary School English and Italian teacher Marianna D’Ezio appears in the newly published volume Anglistica Pisana IX, 12 2012, “The United Kingdom and the Italian Risorgimento.”

Dr. D’Ezio’s essay is about 19th-century British writer Isabella Blagden (also known as "Isa,” and a close friend of the Brownings) and her interest in the Italian political movement of the Risorgimento. At the time Blagden lived in and around Florence and hosted intellectual meetings and conversations in her salon. She wrote several novels and poems, all of them about the Italian Risorgimento, and

S. Susanna St. Nicholas Serata T he Community of Santa Susanna Church cordially invites everyone to the St. Nicholas Charity Serata on Saturday evening, December 7, 2013 at Marymount.

This fundraising event is now in its 63rd year, and all of the proceeds from this wonderful evening go directly to nine specific Roman charities, which assist the poor, refugees, AIDS patients, orphans, mentally and physically handicapped children, the sick and the elderly in the Roman community.

The evening includes an elegant, Italian dinner along with dancing to the music of Ross & The Doormats. There is also an extensive silent auction, plus a raffle for weekends for two in London, Paris, and Venice. Dinner tickets are €65 per person and

can be purchased after the Santa Susanna Mass in the Marymount Chapel at 11am or by contacting Fr. Greg at 06.488.2748 or Gabriella Castelli or Gabriella Spadaro at school.
