Alums in the Classroom—Engineering Club At BNI When Rich Sobilo and others were at Noll in the 1970s and ’80s, they had teachers with very strong ties to industry and specifically, engineering. “Maurice O’Hern taught physics, he had a PhD in Physics from Northwestern University as well as an engineering degree. He had dozens of patents from his work in the rail industry. Cesar Queyquep taught aeronautical engineering at Purdue Calumet at night and geometry, industrial design and other classes at Noll during the day. So there was a strong engineering presence in the school. This meant that numerous students, like my colleagues and myself, became engineers. These are the same friends and colleagues that I call upon to help ‘teach’ the class now,” said Sobilo. The format of the club varies each time they meet but what doesn’t change is the attempt to introduce significant engineering principles with all discussions. “Sometimes we will have an engineer come in to talk about his discipline, such as chemical engineering. Other times we will introduce a certain type of industry, like a steel mill or power plant. We cover engineering basics and try to make the class very proactive, asking questions and making the potential future engineers think and problem solve logically, one of the most important traits of an engineer,” said Sobilo. The club has participated at the Purdue University Engineering Expo several times and has finished in the Top 20 one year and in the top half another. (This is out of over 100 high school engineering teams in Indiana.)
