OUR MISSION

Bishop Noll Institute, a diverse, Catholic college preparatory school, partners with local faith communities to empower young adults to live their faith in Christ through ministry, scholarship and leadership.

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Almighty and ever-faithful Lord, gratefully acknowledging Your mercy and humbly admitting our need, we pledge our trust in You and each other.

We profess that the call requires us to be stewards of Your gifts.

As stewards, we receive Your gifts gratefully, cherish and tend them in a responsible manner, share them in practice and love with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.

As we delighted in the change of colors this fall—the time of year I allow myself to appreciate more than just my hallmark hues of blue and gold—we were reminded that the holidays are nearing.

And Thanksgiving is upon us.

At Bishop Noll Institute, our thank-you list grew rapidly as we wrapped up our school’s 94th year and started our 95th. God has blessed us in so many ways. Most obviously, we are grateful for our resilient and ambitious students; our tremendously dedicated and engaged faculty, staff and administrative team; our supportive parents, coaches and volunteers; and our invested partners in the Diocese of Gary who help us thrive in executing our mission.

And, perhaps more impactfully than ever, our gratitude extends to a growing number of alumni and other benefactors whose generosity rose to levels we hadn’t seen at BNI in recent history.

In 2014–15, overall contributed income to Bishop Noll—including scholarship donations, Annual Fund giving, special fund giving and bequests—totaled $723,000. That’s a 113 percent increase in annual total giving from five years prior.

In that same five-year period, giving to BNI’s Annual Fund to support annual operations has grown 95 percent in total dollars and 54 percent in total gifts.

“Thank you” only begins to express our gratitude to each of you listed in this Annual Report and all of you who have supported our students in so many important ways.

So why does any of this matter? Why should we care?

It matters because the giving of our benefactors is part of a complex equation that helps explain why Bishop Noll’s enrollment is at a 14-year high; why our Class of 2015 received college scholarship offers totaling $8.67 million; and why our tuition (including books) remains the most affordable of any accredited Catholic high school serving Northwest Indiana, Chicago’s Southeast Side or the southern suburbs.

You see, the more generous our alumni and stakeholders are, the more we can offer in providing top-notch instruction and related services, and up-to-date facilities and technology, all while keeping tuition as affordable as possible.

Personally, I give to Bishop Noll because I am grateful for having received the gift of a BNI education and for how it started me on a path to success. Thankful giving is my way to help ensure that a BNI education remains a viable option for our future leaders, the youth of our region, for generations to come.

Though all of our stories are different, I hope you, too, feel blessed to have received a Bishop Noll education, one that provided a solid foundation for your future. And I pray that you, too, embrace the opportunity to invest the fruits of your harvest and pay it forward so that the youth of today and tomorrow can enjoy the same hope for a successful future that we enjoyed.

highlights of 2014-2015 Bishop Noll Institute completed its 94th year as Northwest Indiana’s premier Catholic high school. With the addition of 137 freshmen in the Class of 2018, our enrollment remains strong. Principal Craig Stafford and a team of faculty members began writing a curriculum

to become a STEM school beginning with the 2015-16 school year. STEM, an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, is about problem- or project-based learning as well as integrating STEM themes across the entire curriculum. BNI has partnered with Purdue University, West Lafayette, to develop the vision and mission statements for STEM at BNI. Our 2015 graduates had the opportunity to earn college credits last year through AP courses as well as dual credit courses taught by select Bishop Noll teachers who serve as Indiana University and Purdue University adjunct faculty. Out of 126 seniors, 65 percent were enrolled in AP or dual credit classes, and many earned one semester or more of college credit while attending Bishop Noll.

In addition, the class of 2015 received $8.67 million in college scholarships, and 10 graduates intended to play sports at the collegiate level. BNI, which received an “A” rating from the Indiana Department of Education, continues to make strides in academic excellence through its college prep curriculum.

Bishop Noll welcomed five new teachers and said good-bye to two long-serving teachers. David Tutacko, social studies teacher, is happily enjoying a well-deserved retirement. In April, beloved teacher, coach and friend Larry Bentley, also a social studies teacher, passed away after a short illness. Both of these cherished members of the BNI family had been part of the Diocese of Gary for more than 40 years. Veteran BNI social studies teacher John Trafny authored a fourth book on the history of Gary. “Gary’s Glen Park” chronicles the history of the Glen Park neighborhood from the early 1900s through the 1970s. Trafny was also honored in January by the Department of Indiana Veterans of Foreign Wars as the 2014–15 Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year at the high school level.

Bishop Noll students continue to shine in extracurricular activities in addition to their success in the classroom.

The BNI band, under the direction of Rocco Carioto, continues to grow and stands strong at more than 50 students. The marching Warriors won a second-place silver trophy in their division for their marching field show at the state ISSMA band competition. This was the first competition for the band since the 1990s.

The band also marched in the Columbus, McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day and St. Patrick’s Day parades in Chicago as well as local Independence Day parades in Whiting, Highland and Munster, resulting in parade awards. The band program, having begun as a marching band, now boasts a concert band, a jazz band, and has also started a mariachi band! Our choir has grown under the direction of David Herr, providing beautiful music at our monthly liturgies, concerts and performances around the region. In January, the choir was selected to lead the diocesan congregation in song at the vesper services to welcome newly installed Bishop Donald J. Hying.

In February, Amelia Chavez and Hailey DeWolf of the BNI choir received Gold Medals for their performances at ISSMA. In addition, Noll’s theater department presented two successful productions, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest and Seussical The Musical.

Three students received medals for their paintings in local art exhibits.

In athletics, our girls volleyball and boys basketball teams made it to the semistate finals. Senior Jesus Loe, a wrestler in the 220-pound weight class, advanced to the semistate finals. Junior sprinter Shana Cooper won two fifth-place medals in the IHSAA girls state track finals for the 100- and 200-meter dashes. After a long absence, ice hockey is back at BNI! Rich Sobilo ’83 organized and is coaching the hockey team that hit the ice in 2014–15.

Our Campus Ministry department has grown into the mainstream of Bishop Noll’s student life, and students are increasingly excited about getting involved in the many ministry opportunities available to them.

On retreats, students have learned to be vulnerable and reflective with one another to learn more about themselves, their relationships, and their faith. On campus, students are actively involved in our liturgies.

We employ a steady rotation of students as readers, gift-bearers, ushers, altar-servers Eucharistic-Ministers.

Meanwhile, our Service & Ministry Team draws dozens of students to each meeting, and during Catholic Schools Week 2015, the team launched a new club to discuss social issues, write letters to imprisoned Christians, sold and delivered Share-A-Prayer cards, and did 60 hours of service. Students were enriched through Campus Ministry offerings, like The Margins trips, our servicelearning immersions to Chicago offered several times each year; monthly visits to Hammond-Whiting Care Center; and other school projects helping groups like The Port Ministries and Carmelite Home.

Bishop Noll students displayed their strong Catholic faith throughout their many service projects throughout the year. To kick off the year, Principal Craig Stafford and Dean of Students Matt Chico accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to increase awareness of ALS among the student body. In October, the BNI sophomore class presented a check for $400 to the Carmelite sisters who run St. Joseph’s Carmelite Home in East Chicago. The funds were raised by BNI students during homecoming week as part of a “Penny War” competition between the classes, as organized by BNI’s Student Council.

Each year a different charity benefits from the event, and this time sophomores—the winning class—chose to donate to the Carmelite Home, which is in its 102nd year serving children in crisis, ages birth to 18. Also in October, BNI students teamed up Unilever employees to assemble 5,000 hygiene kits for local and national

charities. The event was staged in conjunction with Global Handwashing Day, to raise awareness about how regular handwashing prevents the spread of viruses and other diseases. Our students supported the Northwest Indiana Food Bank by collecting more than 4,000 food items and donating them to the St. Joseph’s Food Pantry in Hammond during the Thanksgiving season, as well as collecting more than 850 jars of peanut butter later in the year for the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. At the Thanksgiving Mass, students also presented a check for $1,000 to Bishop Melczek to be donated to Catholic Relief Services. The National Honor Society led three successful blood drives for the American Red Cross and volunteered at the Area 7 Special Olympics. The Catholic Charities Gift Drive in December provided toys and clothing for 30 families.

The Bishop Noll Alumni & Friends Tailgate Party was once again the place to be on Homecoming weekend.

The Tailgate Party, held after the football game in the BNI fieldhouse, draws 600 friends and alumni gathered for a buffet dinner, a beer garden, a DJ playing lots of oldies—but most importantly, the pleasure of seeing old friends. Many reunion classes kick off their reunion weekend at the tailgate party.

The Big Event—a new celebration with the same purpose as our previously named Emporium—was held April 24. Like the Emporium, The Big Event is our largest, single-day fundraiser for BNI, raising money to support student scholarships. More than 225 guests enjoyed a relaxed, casual evening filled with great food, drinks, music, dancing, raffles, a live auction, and even a bags tournament. A new price that is more affordable for everyone made this an attractive evening for many.

More than $47,000 was raised to support student scholarships at BNI. In July, the Bishop Noll Annual Golf Outing at Innsbrook Country Club brought alumni from several decades and friends together for a day of fun and camaraderie. Together, sponsors, donors and golfers assisted in contributing more than $10,000 for the BNI Scholarship Fund. The Mary Whelan Golf Invitational held its fourth annual outing at Briar Ridge Country Club in June. Despite a rain-soaked morning, more than $96,000 for the building fund was raised with the support of sponsors in our local business community.

Lettermen Locker Room Challenge

Last winter, Vince Berta ’76 offered a challenge to former BNI athletes—to complete the renovation of the boys’ locker room in the BNI fieldhouse. The Lettermen Locker Room Challenge, begun in 2012 was well short of its goal. Vince offered to match any donations generated

by June 1, 2015, up to $10,000.
