greetings from our principal Dear BNI, I hope this finds you well. The 2015-2016 school year marks the 95th year of this institution. Our school continues to shine as a top Catholic college preparatory institution in this area and beyond. Our mission of educating students in mind, body, and soul is the foundation of what we do today, and what we did 95 years ago. Bishop Noll Institute students continue to excel in the classroom, in extracurricular activities, and as students who live by the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our Catholic identity, our curriculum, and our focus on preparing leaders for the future have never been stronger.

As we prepare for the next century of teaching and learning, we call all Warriors to ensure that our school continues to produce leaders, change agents, and believers in Christ.

Across this nation, education has taken a dramatic shift toward producing test takers instead of self motivated critical thinkers. There is a misguided focus on end results (test scores) rather than on the journey of forming young minds. Our students are more than just an ACT, SAT, ISTEP, ECA, or an NWEA test. They are people who have histories, families, talents, and potential. It is our job to accept our students where they are, and take them to new heights. Our school faces a challenge to rise above educational minutiae, and provide a challenging curriculum that produces life long learners. With your help, support, and focus on the minds, bodies, and souls of our students we can continue to: • spark innovation and tackle real world scenarios in STEM class • learn languages from Chinese to Spanish • challenge the status quo

ninety-second commencement Bishop Noll students in the Class of 2015 have spent four years of high school growing academically and spiritually—finding success inside and outside the classroom. On Friday, June 5, these graduates bid farewell to high school with fond memories of their BNI days and much hope for the future! Beautiful liturgical music performed by the BNI choir, and directed by David Herr, made this a memorable day.

With a cool breeze blowing through the beautiful stained glass windows of the Cathedral of the Holy Angels, the Class of 2015 began their graduation day at the Baccalaureate Mass celebrated

by Bishop Donald Hying. Bishop Hying encouraged the graduates to thank their parents for their love, support and their gift of this Bishop Noll education.

Later in the evening the graduates gathered together one final time at the commencement ceremony in the BNI fieldhouse.

Graduates heard inspiring words from Valedictorian Alyssa Anglin and Salutatorian Katherine Jerge before receiving their diplomas from BNI principal Craig Stafford.

We wish our graduates an abundance of success in all of their future endeavors. Always remember—you are forever Warriors!

BNI welcomes new faculty and staff— including several alums

Welcome to nine new faculty and one staff member to the Bishop Noll team.

Stacia Bolakowski (better known as Miss B) joins BNI as the Campus Minister. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English education from Ball State University, a master’s degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan University, and a certificate in lay ecclesial ministry from the Diocese of Gary and Catholic Theological Union. During 26 years in both public and Catholic schools, Miss B has taught English, theology, journalism, speech, and theatre arts. She was most recently the campus minister at Andrean High School where she directed the Kairos and underclass retreat programs, student ministry team, and the community service program, as well as staff, parent and alumni ministries.

Jaime Cavazos ’94 officially comes on board in the social studies department after student teaching and taking on a long term subbing assignment at BNI last year. Mr. Cavazos received a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University Calumet, and a master’s degree from Loyola University. Mr. Cavazos will also be coaching the newly formed speech team.

Michael Carioto joins Bishop Noll as the art teacher. He graduated from Monmouth College where he studied theater and art.

Johan Castanada joins the theology department. A native of Columbia, South America, Mr. Castanada graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy with a minor in religion from Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT. He expects to complete his Master of Divinity program in December. Prior to having joined BNI, he taught for a year and a half at St. Francis and St. Rose in New Haven, CT. Quinn Cloghessy ’10 joins the social studies department. He is extremely excited to be back in the school that has given him so much to be thankful for in his life. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, IA. As well as teaching, Mr. Cloghessy is a coach on the boys soccer team.

Sara Davis ’09 joins BNI as the business teacher. She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration and her professional in human resources certificate from the University of Phoenix. Prior to joining BNI, Ms. Davis worked in the retail industry.

Anthony Hoolehan earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University North Central. Mr. Hoolehan teaches health and STEM classes. Mr. Hoolehan is also the head baseball coach.

along with his administration endorsement from Indiana University Northwest. Prior to Bishop Noll, Mr. Josvai taught 25 years for the School City of East Chicago. Mr. Josvai was also an industrial chemist for 17 years.

Mary Koster returns to the science department. She received her bachelor’s of science in chemistry and minor in biology from University of Michigan—Flint, and her teaching certificate from Trinity Christian College. Mary recently completed her master’s in analytical chemistry and biotechnology certificate from Governor's State University.

Rose Mullaney ’11 joins BNI as a member of the English department. She earned a Bachelor of Science in education degree for English/language arts from Indiana University Bloomington.

Karl Repay Jr. ’09 joins BNI as a member of the social studies department. Mr. Repay received a bachelor’s degree in history from Purdue University Calumet. Prior to Bishop Noll, Mr. Repay was a teacher at St. Casimir School in Hammond. He is also an assistant coach for the cross country and track teams.

BNI Theatre Department Spring Production— SEUSSICAL the Musical The Bishop Noll Institute theatre department presented the spring production, Seussical the Musical in March. “Seussical is a high-energy show with lots of color and fun,” said Director Kevin Burgun of the Bishop Noll faculty. “It’s mostly about

Peanut Butter Drive Eclipses Goal

Bishop Noll students engaged in an act of almsgiving this Lenten season. The annual peanut butter challenge by Mr. Bob Homrich ’67 (aka Peanut Butter Bob) encourages students at Bishop Noll to collect peanut butter to be donated to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. This year’s goal was to collect 850 jars of peanut butter.

The students eclipsed the goal and collected 888 jars!

Students Recognized at Honors Night

Bishop Noll’s Honors Night was held March 5 in the BNI Auditorium. Seventy-three students were inducted into the following honor societies: National Honor Society (NHS), National Spanish Honor Society (NSHS), Tri-M Music Society (TMMS), National French Honor Society (NFHS), and the National Chinese Honor Society (NCHS).

imagination and how important imagination is to us, and it celebrates all of Dr. Seuss’ creative work, with certain elements from each of his classics.”

The play was told largely through the storytelling of The Cat in the Hat (Hailey DeWolf), who reveals how Horton the Elephant (Steven Gonzalez) discovers the people of Whoville living on a speck of dust. The musical also featured JoJo (Julia Fugger), Mayzie LaBird (Tianna Orr), Gertrude McFuzz (Celia Seiser), the Grinch (Anastasija Malisic), Yertle the Turtle (Frank Calzonzi), Mr. Mayor (Warren McReynolds) and other favorite Dr. Seuss creations.

“Paying it Forward” Propels Noll House

For the past ten years, student council has organized the "Noll House" fundraiser. This fundraiser attempts to raise $3,200 annually to build a house for a poor family in the Caribbean or Latin America. In 2014 Noll was able to build a home for a family in Haiti.

This year our students exceeded their goal and raised $3,800!

The students were able to purchase an “upgraded” house, provide resources to teach the family a trade, and send a child to school. A large part of exceeding this goal was because of one student, Jacob Herr, a junior.

Jacob was a past recipient of the David J. Falda, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, and it made a lasting impact on him. Because of this family’s generosity, he felt inspired to “pay it forward” by donating $400 to the 2015 Noll House fundraiser in honor of David J. Falda, Sr. As a way to continue “paying it forward”, student council made sure the 2015 Noll House be named in memory of David J. Falda, Sr. Supporting and encouraging Catholic education works, our students find ways every day to “pay it forward” and impact the world around them in a positive way.

World Travelers—BNI Students Travel Abroad

This past summer BNI students had two opportunities to travel to Europe, one through the French department, and also through the Spanish department.

Bishop Noll’s annual Summer Study in France took place from June 9-19, 2015. Four students accompanied by French teacher Diane Wilson landed in Paris and jump-started their trip with a visit to the Eiffel Tower. Students also visited most of the major sites in the glittering City of Lights including the Louvre, the Champs Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe, Sacré Coeur, the Quartier Latin, the Marais District and Versailles.

In July, another group of BNI students had the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to France and Spain. Ten students, accompanied by dean of students, Matt Chico, and Spanish teacher, Patricia Aguila, traveled to Paris, Barcelona, Zaragoza and BNI students and St François exchange Madrid Spain. partners visit Versailles.

The trip organized

by EF Tours provided students with a unique experience to see the sights and sounds of Europe. Ms. Aguila and Mr. Chico are planning a trip to Italy in 2016. The trip is open to all current BNI students.

Band Immerses Itself Into Chicago

The Bishop Noll Institute concert band started its spring break with a successful three-day concert tour March 27-29, wrapping up in downtown Chicago.

The band, under the direction of Rocco Carioto, performed at Catholic elementary schools in Hammond and Mokena, Ill., before heading downtown to perform concerts at the Museum of Science and Industry and the Adler Planetarium. The band performed selections from Aaron Copeland, Pirates of the Caribbean, Michael Jackson and “Classical Gas” by Mason Williams.

In addition to its own performances, band members also attended performances of Beauty and the Beast and a Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert. After the performance of Beauty and the Beast, students met actors from the musical and were able to spend time in a question-and-answer session.

The band also visited the William Harris Lee & Co. violin operation on Michigan Avenue, where members were able to see the process of hand-crafting violins valued from $30,000 to $100,000. Some students were invited to perform on them.

The band stayed overnight for two evenings while performing in the city and ate at some of Chicago’s hallmark venues, including the Hard Rock Cafe.

The Bishop Noll band ended its tour by attending Mass on Palm Sunday at one of the few downtown buildings that survived the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, Old St. Patrick’s Church, and participating at a music clinic at VanderCook College of Music.

At VanderCook, professors spent time working with band members.

“It was an awesome weekend for our students,” said Carioto, in his fourth year as Noll’s band director. “Not only were the kids excited to share their talents with the various audiences, but they learned a great deal in the process from the whole experience, including the hands-on attention they received at VanderCook.

“The students also were amazed at how, after each performance and even after Mass at Old St. Pat’s, so many Bishop Noll alumni from many, many years came up to congratulate them and wish them well.”

Mr. Bentley remembered by Bishop Noll family

The Bishop Noll Institute community mourns the loss of beloved veteran teacher Larry Bentley, who died Easter Sunday following a battle with cancer.

He was 65.

“Larry Bentley’s knowledge, wit, and kindness will hold a permanent place in the history and future of Bishop Noll Institute,” BNI Principal Craig Stafford said. “Larry was an integral part of shaping students in mind, body, and soul during his tenure at our school.

Bishop Noll lost a fine educator, friend, and supporter. He will be sorely missed by all.”

“Our entire Bishop Noll community is saddened by Larry’s passing, and we extend our deepest condolences to his immediate family,” BNI President Paul Mullaney said. “He was a true BNI Warrior and bled blue and gold.

“Most impressive was the impact he made on all those he interacted with. It never ceased to amaze me how his former students, many years after being in his class, would rattle off their favorite Bentley-isms. He had a great sense of humor, quick wit and infectious smile that drew people in, and you can understand how he used those God-given traits to capture the attention of those in his class for their own advancement. He was a solid guy.”

A 1967 graduate of Hobart High School, Mr. Bentley graduated from Indiana State University in 1971 and was hired by the Diocese of Gary to teach elementary school in Gary. He moved from Holy Angels School to Bishop Noll for the 1983-84 school year, and taught at Noll for 32 years. In the spring of 2012, he was recognized by the diocese for 40 years of teaching service.

Mr. Bentley, who obtained a master’s degree from Indiana University in 1977, taught U.S. history and world history at Noll.

“To him, history was a story that needed to be told,” David Tutacko, another of Noll’s 40-years-plus history teachers and chairman of the Social Studies Department, said of Mr. Bentley.

“He was a fantastic story teller. That is how he delivered his lectures. Introductions, details, then the climax and that is when the U.S.S. Maine exploded and the “war” would begin. His humor, his energy, his knowledge of his subject was an inspiration to all of us on the faculty, the new and the experienced.”

Mr. Bentley—affectionately known by the BNI family as “L.B.” —was Noll’s varsity baseball coach from 1992 through 1997. His Warrior teams won sectional titles in 1995 and ’96.

“Coach Bentley was truly one of a kind,” said Geoff Laciak, a player on those ’95 and ’96 teams. “He was more than just a teacher and a coach, he was a true friend. L.B. taught me that true success and happiness was determined by more than just getting a good grade in the classroom or a victory on the field. Success and happiness is achieved through the personal relationships you make and the positive impact you have on other peoples’ lives. I think it’s safe to say L.B. made every person around him better and, in the process, taught us how to make one another better.”

The family requests memorials be made in his memory to the “BNI / Bentley Scholarship Fund” at Bishop Noll Institute, 1519 Hoffman Street, Hammond, IN 46327.

campus ministry All in the Family

One of the primary differences between teaching high school students versus college students lies in the depth of the relationships that often develops between the teachers and their students.

For example, when teaching high school students, the teacher has the privilege—and it is a privilege—of spending meaningful time with each of her or his students every day for an entire semester; if the teacher is fortunate he or she will have those same students for another semester, which means an entire academic year.

On the other hand, when teaching undergraduates, the frequency and concentration of those encounters is reduced. The types of interactions between faculty and students are far less personal. And the impact of those encounters is often far less memorable.

Anyone who’s ever taught young people knows that “education” is more complicated than the seemingly facile delivery of content, but rather, the more challenging delivery of compassion which comes from getting to know one‘s students, them getting to know you—and hopefully liking you—because as one educational expert put it, “if they don’t like you, they won’t learn from you! “And this important development takes time. Meaningful time.

Having taught theology to high school and college students in various durations and settings for almost two decades I have come to expect one unchangeable reality: The last day of class with my students will be one of the saddest days of the year for me, because we will all have to say good-bye, and from that moment onward, everything will be different. You can’t go back.

This past June was particularly difficult for me because I knew I would not be continuing at Bishop Noll since I had accepted a new assignment as administrator and faculty member at Calumet College of St. Joseph, Hammond, IN., sponsored by my religious order, the Missionaries of the Precious Blood.

While I still remain chaplain for Bishop Noll and a board member, I miss sharing life, faith and fun with our students, especially the ones I had the direct privilege of teaching every day—and who taught me every day—because I discovered in a most certain way that it’s quite easy to discover God’s presence in these young Warriors. It’s that kind of place. It’s that kind of family.

After our opening all-school Mass with Bishop Hying I greeted students in hallway outside the gymnasium and two former students came over and together gave me a great big hug. I didn’t think they would let go. I was surprised and touched—literally. In that moment I felt Jesus embracing me as well, saying, “Isn’t it a blessing to be part of the Bishop Noll family? Transition

The year 2015 has been a time of transition in so many ways for so many people, including myself.

If someone would have told me twelve months ago that I would be the Campus Minister at Bishop Noll starting in 2015–16, I would have never believed them! Yet over the past several months, I have learned that the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the good fortune of finding wonderful opportunities at the right moment have made me one of the newest members of the Warrior family. I will admit, I have caught myself putting on the red and gold spirit wear I have from my 13 years as a Niner at Andrean while getting ready for school one Friday morning a few weeks ago.

Rest assured, however, that has been the toughest obstacle I have had during this transition. All of the students, teachers, staff, and parents at Noll have made me feel very welcome; it is like I have been a part of the family for years instead of months. Thank you so much for your genuine hospitality and friendship.

This most recent transition in my life has also allowed me to see first-hand one of my favorite scripture passages at work: If you commit your work to the Lord, it will succeed.

—Proverbs 16:3 In my 26 years as a classroom teacher, administrator, and Campus Minister, I have not seen such zeal for faith and life as I have in the halls of BNI. I literally hit the ground running with ministry events starting on August 3, and even before my official first day, I was in contact with a large number of students who were passionate and energetic about working for the success of the Freshman Retreat held on August 30, our first all-school Mass of the year with Bishop Hying on September 2, as well as other established Campus Ministry activities. The desire and creativity of several upperclassmen also led to beginning a student-led Bible study after school once a week; we will soon have morning prayer and/or the Rosary in the Chapel for interested students and staff before school simply because of deep student interest and desire. Even members of the freshman class have recently approached me about joining thousands of students around the country before school on September 23 for the 25th annual nationally-recognized prayer service called “See You At The Pole.” I have been in awe at the amazing response I have seen from students so early in the year when it comes to nurturing their souls as well as their minds and bodies!

Another beautiful transitional event I was able to experience recently was our first Kairos retreat for the school year. From September 8-11, 34 juniors and 16 student and adult leaders traveled to the beautiful log cabin lodge at LaSalle Manor in Plano, Illinois, to experience the great love God has for all of us through the power of positive human relationships and joy-filled prayer. Kairos 7 at BNI was actually my eighth experience on such a retreat, but as I have found over the past three years, each Kairos is unique and different. It was an honor to be a part of such a loving, caring experience with members of my new Noll family.

In order to make my transition to the Warrior Way of Life complete, I have a simple request of everyone reading this column: Pray. Pray for our students, that they continue to bring wonderful energy and enthusiasm to all of their academic, ministry, and extra-curricular activities. Pray for the teachers, administrators, and staff members who work so diligently to guide our young people in truth, honesty, and integrity. Pray for the parents whose dedication to secure a Noll education for their children is beyond extraordinary. And pray for the alumni and benefactors of Bishop Noll who want only the best experiences for our current students, just as they had for themselves during their high school years.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the near future. Go Warriors!

On June 6, 2015, most Noll students were sleeping in after a long school year or making plans for the summer. One student, junior Shana Cooper, was at Indiana University in Bloomington participating in the 2015 IHSAA Girls State Track Finals.

Times of 12.10 in the 100 meter dash and 25.01 in the 200 meter dash in the regionals had propelled Cooper to the state finals.

The day was a success for Shana, earning a 5th place state medal in both the 100 and 200 meter dash! Shana ran a personal best in both races with a 12.08 in the 100, and a 24.83 in the 200.

It seemed like summer would never arrive in the region, but there was no doubt it had arrived on July 20th. A warm sunny day greeted more than 100 golfers as they arrived at Innsbrook Country Club for the Annual Bishop Noll Golf Invitational. Alums traveled from South Carolina, Arizona and Kentucky to support BNI at this traditional event!

Friends enjoyed a buffet lunch and a chance to catch up with each other, before hitting the links. A nice breeze and a wellstocked beverage cart kept the golfers cool throughout the day. A cocktail reception and sit down dinner wrapped up a great day. Over $10,000 was raised to support the many good things happening at Bishop Noll!

Mary Whelan Memorial Golf Outing

The rainy skies were not cooperating on June 15th for the fourth annual Mary Whelan Memorial. Heavy rains kept the golfers inside the clubhouse until mid afternoon. These dedicated golfers waited it out, and helped to raise significant funds to support the many necessary renovations at Bishop Noll. The outing, chaired

After squeezing in nine holes, the golfers enjoyed a delicious steak dinner, with many staying at the clubhouse to watch the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup! Over $96,000 was raised to continue upgrading our school.

Locker Room Challenge a success!

The Coleman name will once again grace an endowed scholarship at Bishop Noll Institute. In May, Pfc. John Philip Coleman, from left, Rosemary Coleman and 2015, Miss Rosemary Coleman ’42 Margaret Coleman Walz. established the Margaret Coleman Walz Scholarship This most generous scholarship was established to honor the memory of Rosemary’s twin sister Margaret ’42. This renewable scholarship will be granted to a current BNI student who maintains an A or B average and is representative of Bishop Noll values.

This is the second endowed scholarship established by Miss Coleman. In 2005, she established the Pfc. John Philip Coleman Scholarship in memory of her brother John ’40 who was killed in France during the Battle of the Bulge. This coveted scholarship is awarded to a top student with an A average, who demonstrates the Catholic values of Bishop Noll Institute. Since its inception, the Pfc. John Philip Coleman Scholarship has had a most positive impact on the lives of several top Bishop Noll students, including two valedictorians and two salutatorians.

After graduating from Catholic Central in 1942, Miss Coleman taught at Catholic Central/Bishop Noll High School for three years. She retired as Professor Emerita at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. We are humbled and grateful for Miss Coleman’s commitment to our Bishop Noll students.

An endowment fund is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding. These types of investments generate dollars to be used, in perpetuity, to support Bishop Noll and other specific programs. With an endowed scholarship, your contributions are invested with the BNI Foundation, and students are awarded scholarships each year from a portion of the earnings. Any remainder is then reinvested in the fund, to preserve and ensure growth of the endowment in perpetuity. Your endowment will support students for generations! An endowed scholarship is an ideal way to preserve a family name and personally impact numerous students.

Class of 1965—50-year reunion produces generous gift to BNI through challenge from Class of 1963

The Class of 1965 celebrated their 50-year reunion. As part of their reunion celebration they took on a challenge from the Class of 1963. In 2013 while planning their own reunion, classmate Tim Mertz discovered that not many reunions

Last winter BNI alum Vince Berta ’76 offered a challenge to former athletes— help raise at least $10,000 by June 1 to support the renovation of the boys locker room, and he would match it with a $10,000 gift from his family.

Well Warriors, you met the challenge!

On June 1, donations of $10,500 had been received. Work on the locker room will begin in October. Painting, lighting and new lockers will begin the transformation.

The renovations should be complete by 12/31.

Future enhancements will include flooring, showers and vent work. If you missed the challenge, you can still help!

Donations to continue improvements to our athletic facilities continue to be accepted. You can mail your donation to support the locker room renovation to Bishop Noll Institute, attention: Mary Ellen O’Neill, Director of Advancement.

The Class of 1974, which held its 40th Anniversary Reunion a year ago on September 27th, 2014, has not slipped into hibernation mode. Reunion organizers, Jim Kendra and Dan Hunt, are each donating $1,000 and are asking their classmates help in an effort to top the monumental fundraising effort last year by the Class of 1965 ($25,200!) and to issue a challenge to all the classes of the 1970s.

The Class of 1974 goal is to raise $27,000 by spring 2016.

Three BNI alums endow scholarship at Purdue

Bishop Noll alums give back to their alma mater in a variety of ways. While their reasons for giving back are many, one underlying belief remains constant: They wish to see the next generation of BNI students have the opportunity to achieve academic success and experience a bright future beyond BNI. Recently, a group of friends from the Class of 1963 have taken their support of BNI students one step further. Dr. Jeffrey S. Kristoff, Dr. Richard L. Schreiner, and Ms.Wallene M. Swentko have established a perpetual Bishop Noll Institute Scholarship Endowment at Purdue University, West Lafayette. The scholarship idea resulted from their continued friendship with one another, as well as a renewed involvement with BNI after their 50th class reunion in 2013.

Upon learning that Bishop Noll would be introducing a STEM curriculum (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in the fall of 2015, and realizing that many academically talented students often lack the resources to attend college, the idea of supporting the success of BNI students beyond high school was born.

“We wanted to assist those BNI students in need of financial aid who pursue a STEM discipline. It was an opportunity for us, and hopefully other BNI graduates who contribute to the endowment, to assist Noll students for many, many years,” said Kristoff.

In addition Kristoff, a 1968 graduate of Purdue University, said, “we hope that those students who may be involved will not only have very successful careers but likewise assist others in need during their lives.”

At Bishop Noll, incoming freshmen will experience integrated STEM themes in all of their core classes. The remaining student body will experience STEM themes over time, as classes and themes will be continually added to the curriculum.

One Bishop Noll graduate from the Class of 2016, who will be attending Purdue in West Lafayette and majoring in a STEM discipline, will have the first opportunity to apply for the Bishop Noll Institute Scholarship. Not ones to pass up a challenge, ’65 classmates Jim Wieser and Paul Schreiner encouraged classmates to contribute to their class gift. On August 27 these gentlemen presented a class gift of $25,200 to Bishop Noll. Congratulations to the Class of 1965 on your milestone reunion. Profound thanks for your generosity and Warrior spirit!

This past September we once again invited our major donors to join us for an evening of fellowship at Bishop Noll to thank them for their generous support. During the evening, a special ceremony was held to induct Miss Ida Polito ’35 into the Bishop Noll Hall of Honor. In introducing her, BNI president Paul Mullaney remarked that Ida, one of our oldest living alums, has been a staunch supporter of Bishop Noll every year since 1935.

For 80 years Ida has volunteered hundreds of hours helping plan reunions and serving as a class agent over several decades to help support her beloved alma mater. “My parents sent six of us to Bishop Noll even though money was tight”, said Ida. “After I graduated I felt a duty to give back for the excellent education I received.” As far back as the Advancement Office maintains records, Ida has never missed a yearly contribution. The Big Event, our new spring fundraiser, made its debut on April 24, 2015. After a 33 year run, the Emporium was replaced with a new event to reignite enthusiasm for our BNI scholarship program.

The BNI fieldhouse was transformed from a basketball court into a festive, blue and gold party room! Hoping to attract alumni and friends from several generations, The Big Event took on a more casual feel, with a more affordable ticket price. More than 225 guests enjoyed a casual Italian buffet, a bags tournament, and the opportunity to take a chance on several raffles. In addition, guests enthusiastically bid on several popular items in the live auction, including a Hilton Head Island golf escape, an evening dining with Bishop Hying, an ASUS—flip 2 in 1 laptop, and a foursome to the BNI golf outing.

This year’s live scholarship auction honored the late Larry Bentley, a popular teacher (and legend) at Bishop Noll for many years. Through the generosity of several guests, over $12,600 was raised to begin a scholarship in his name.

Dorothy J. Jackson Dorothy J. Jackson graduated in 1942. With the supervision of Sister Ivan, the Class of 1942 built the Grotto. Dorothy’s father, Samuel Jackson was the landscaper for the project. Dorothy married Dr. Roger P. Smitley on February 6, 1954. Their daughter and six sons graduated from Catholic Central. Dorothy will be 92 this year.

Patricia (Johann) O’Rourke Patricia (Johann) O’Rourke has moved back to “Da Region” after living in SW Michigan on beautiful St. Joseph River for 18 years. Patricia is now living near her children in Crown Point next door to her sister Rita ’45, and her husband Jack Berg’48 as they did in Michigan.

Rev. John F. Kartje Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago announced the appointment of Rev. John Francis Kartje as the rector / president of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary, effective August 28, 2015.

Lowery C. Bogee Lowery retired in 2013 after teaching high school social studies and special education after 39 years.

1970

Marsha Hajduch King Marsha Hajduch King and her husband moved back to Crown Point in 2013. She received her Doctorate in Nursing Practice in Systems Leadership from Rush

Jackie Camarillo Ruiz Jackie is the new principal at St. Stanislaus in East Chicago, IN. She hopes to send many graduates to BNI in the coming years. Jackie joins her husband Tom ’90 as a principal in the Diocese of Gary.

1994

Jaime Cavazos Jaime has joined Bishop Noll as a teacher in the social studies department, where he is teaching U.S. History and is a coach in the

2007

Kimberly Kasper After graduating from Loyola University Chicago with a degree in theology, art and international studies, former Bishop Noll valedictorian Kimberly Kasper (’07) moved to Cape Town, South Africa, where she cofounded a distribution company and volunteered rehabilitating endangered African penguins. She recently authored her first novel under the pen name Tara Omar entitled The Merman’s Mark, a fantasy adventure about life after war. The Merman’s Mark is currently being sold in support of the student group, Billikens for Clean Water, to aid their latest water sanitation project in Honduras.

Sara Davis Sara joins BNI as the business teacher. She received her Bachelor in Business Administration and Professional in Human Resources Certificate from the University of Phoenix. Prior to joining BNI, Ms. Davis worked in the retail industry.

Karl Repay Jr. Karl joins BNI as a member of the social studies department teaching world history and psychology. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Purdue University Calumet. Prior to Bishop Noll, Mr. Repay was a teacher at St. Casimir School in Hammond. He is also an assistant coach for the cross country and track teams.

Mallory Rokosz Mallory works for Echo Logistics in Chicago. She is engaged to be married to Jon Cap in November, 2016.

2010

Quinn Cloghessy Quinn has joined Bishop Noll as a teacher in the social studies department teaching world history and economics, and is also helping coach the boys soccer team. He is extremely excited to be back in the school that has given him so much to be thankful for in his life.

He received his bachelors degree from Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, IA in 2015.

Brendan O’Neill Brendan graduated from Indiana University Kelley School of Business with a degree in finance in 2014. While at IU he was also a part-time police officer with the IU Police Department. He is currently an officer with the Hammond Police Department.

Rose Mullaney Rose joins BNI as a member of the English department. She earned her bachelor of science in education degree for English/ language arts from Indiana University Bloomington.

2012

Hannah Dominiak Hannah is a senior at Ball State University majoring in journalism graphics. This past summer, she was an intern in New York at Time Inc., with the Creative Services team at Sports Illustrated and GOLF. Eileen O’Neill Eileen is a senior in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University majoring in accounting. Last semester she had the opportunity to study abroad in London, England. This past summer she was an intern at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Chicago.

reunions class of 1945 celebrates 70th reunion The Catholic Central Class of 1945 celebrated their 70-year reunion with a delightful afternoon at BNI. They began the day with Mass in the chapel, celebrated by classmate Msgr. Joseph Semancik, and later enjoyed lunch together.

They laughed and told stories all afternoon...just like it was yesterday.
