Beliefs on Teaching and Learning

Before my class observations, my understanding of teaching and learning was limited to theoretical knowledge and lacked practical experience. I viewed teaching as a process of transferring information from teachers to students, with an emphasis on delivering content and assessing student understanding through tests and quizzes. Similarly, I saw learning as a passive process where students received knowledge without actively engaging in the learning experience. My understanding was influenced by traditional teaching models, where the teacher's role was primarily that of a knowledge disseminator especially when teaching Araling Panlipunan. My perception in handling classes were shallow to the point that I really thought handling various students in a classroom is easy. Planning for the class discussion such as, finding appropriate strategies for students and creating various activities that fits the lesson plan is all I thought it would be.

However, my class observations provided a reality check and challenged these preconceptions. I realized that teaching is far more complex and dynamic than I had initially thought. It involves careful planning, adapting to students' needs, and employing diverse instructional strategies. I witnessed firsthand the importance of creating an inclusive and engaging classroom environment that promotes student participation and critical thinking. Moreover, my observations shattered the illusion that handling a classroom is easy. I saw teachers juggling multiple responsibilities, such as managing classroom dynamics, addressing individual student needs, and adjusting their teaching strategies. I learned that effective teaching requires constant reflection and adaptation to meet the diverse learning styles and abilities of students. In summary, my class observations played a crucial role in transforming my shallow and naive beliefs about teaching and learning. They provided a realistic understanding of the complexities involved and the need for flexibility and creativity in the classroom. I now recognize the importance of student-centered approaches and the active role students play in constructing their knowledge.

Narrative Report #1

We started our first classroom observation with our mentor at Abellana National High School on March 15, 2023. Our mentor, Mrs. Amefil Jumao-as, gave us a tour of her classroom and introduced us to the students we would be observing. Every Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. Jumao-as teaches two classes of Grade 9 Economics. We took her lead and did as she told us to do inside the classroom, which was to monitor both her and the students. I came to the conclusion, along with the other observers, that the environment is actually not conducive to learning because it is humid and quite noisy. That is why Mrs. Jumao-as always carries her lapel with her in order to speak clearly and loudly during discussions. The week before, Mrs. Jumao-as gave her students a list of topics to discuss in groups. As anticipated, the reporters had already made preparations to place their visual aids on the board before the teacher arrived. Additionally, each reporter began discussing about their report individually. Mrs. Jumao-as, however, interrupted the student while they were still reporting. She assisted her in revising what she had discussed and provided dialectical definitions of the phrases so that the other students would better comprehend. She even gives examples from real life to help the students understand the subject and make it easier to understand to them. The report had been carried out, but the teacher wasn't happy with how it was working because the student was reading from her phone and their voice couldn't be heard. With that conduct, the instructor urged the student to elaborate on its report. She gave the reporter and the other students the opportunity to respond while using a graph as an illustration. Since the students don't seem to know anything, Mrs. Jumao-as allowed them to use the book as a reference to complete the activity she created. Mrs. Jumao-as allowed students to read the book's context, but she later saw that they had difficulty reading and speaking both Filipino and English fluently. Additionally, despite the fact that the reporting continued, one of the reporter’s lost momenta for failing to create visual aid. As a result, the teacher appeared dissatisfied as the reporter completely passed her the lecture while continuing to help the student. She was the one who wrote the lesson on the board and who expressed disapproval in the student's report. Due to the reporter's ill-prepared and unorganized report, certain students, especially those in the back, didn't seem to be listening to the reporter or the teacher. As a result of the student's poor understanding of the lesson, the teacher is disappointed with the student's performance. The teacher didn't seem to enjoy it because it was inappropriate and the learning wasn't effective with it, but students appeared to be reporting in front with their devices. After concluding the lesson's discussion, the teacher gave each student a homework assignment from the module and instructed the following reporter tobe prepared with their reports. The teacher continued to use reporting as her primary teaching strategy during our second-class observation. However, since it is a shared classroom and two sections are holding classes there, the atmosphere is worse than in the previous session. Both teachers wear lapels in the classroom, but instead of being heard, they often dominate one another, which causes distraction. There are no writing tables available to students, and all the seats are monoblocs. Since they are

not in a proper learning atmosphere and are just socializing with their classmates, students are not paying attention to the class topic as they should be. The teacher allowed the student reporters to use their lapels during class discussions to make their voices loud and clear, but this was useless for student learning because it is still difficult to hear, especially at the back. Without interfering, the teacher patiently listened to the children report from the corner. Some students are acting inappropriately because they chat, take unnecessary actions, and obviously aren't paying attention to the instructional discussion. In contrast to the previous class, where she solely stayed at the front of the room, this time the teacher would approach the students to allow them to join in the discussion. The students at the front and back of the class appeared to be conversing more than they were listening to the teacher's topic during class. Even when students were acting inappropriately in class, the teacher tended not to call them to attention and instead kept the conversation going.

I was able to observe some of the difficulties our mentor faced in her class during my first observation session. It is obvious that dealing with students who do not listen or pay attention in class presents a significant difficulty for the teacher. For example, if a student was unable to present a report that was due a week earlier, the teacher would certainly be disappointed. But given that Mrs. Jumao-as continued the class discussion and took the student's position to explain the lesson to the classmates, what she did was probably effective. On the other hand, since students will probably feel dependent on their teacher for handling the report they will neglect to prepare to study, this conduct will probably be repeated. Additionally, using books as references was a great strategy that makes use of the resources. The book's material can be read, analyzed, and referred to by students in order to increase their knowledge rather than merely relying on what a classmate stated. The kids' inability to read the books' context with ease was the frustrating aspect, though. This is a major problem for students today because they are taking classes online and aren't reading as much, which is more likely to cause their reading abilities to decline. In order to get students to imitate what you just said, Mrs. Jumao-as did what every teacher would do if they saw such performance from the children. The kids' reading errors will be remedied in this way. Last but not least, we as observers have come to the conclusion that every class lacks adequate class management. Since she didn't seem upset by students who were just talking in front of her or the majority of the students in the back during the two sessions we saw, the teacher gave the impression that she had no power in the classroom. Seeing the class at this time can be difficult because most of the students are unable to show respect and pay attention, even though the teacher is in the front. This, in my opinion, is one of the reasons why children won't be able to learn effectively since the teacher doesn't establish a sense of authority in the classroom.

My first-class observation went smooth however the aforementioned challenges were some of my concerns in the class we are observing. A sense of authority inside the classroom is critical for creating a productive and effective learning environment. When a teacher has a sense of authority, students are more likely to respect and trust them, and this can lead to increased engagement, better academic outcomes, and a more positive classroom experience. One important reason for having a sense of authority is to maintain order and discipline in the classroom. This allows the teacher to

maintain a safe and conducive learning environment, minimizing distractions and disruptions and helping students to focus on their studies. In addition, a sense of authority can help to build respect and trust between the teacher and the students. When a teacher is perceived as having legitimate authority, students are more likely to listen to and follow their guidance, and to be more engaged in classroom activities. This can lead to a more positive classroom experience, with students feeling more comfortable and confident in their ability to learn and succeed. Another important benefit of having a sense of authority is that it can encourage student engagement and participation. An effective teacher with a sense of authority is able to motivate and encourage students to participate in class discussions and activities, which can lead to increased engagement and better academic outcomes. Moreover, to have a sense of authority inside the classroom is critical for creating a positive and productive learning environment. By establishing clear expectations, building respect and trust, encouraging engagement and participation, and promoting learning and academic achievement, teachers with a sense of authority can help students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in school and beyond. On the other hand, having a conducive class environment without any distractions is crucial for students to maximize their learning potential and achieve their academic goals. Distractions can disrupt a student's concentration, lower their productivity, and reduce their ability to absorb and retain information. By minimizing distractions in the classroom, students are better able to focus on their studies, engage in learning activities, and achieve academic success. One important benefit of a distraction-free class environment is that it can improve student retention of information. When students are able to concentrate on their studies without distraction, they are more likely to absorb and retain information presented in class. This can lead to better performance on exams and assignments, and to greater mastery of the subject matter overall.

Narrative Report #2

On our second-week of observation, we haven’t got the chance to observe classes in Abellana National School due to the celebration of their Foundation Day. The students were only had their morning classes and obliged to go home afterwards. We decided to communicate with our mentor however she had only told us to go home since there are no classes in the afternoon. However, before going home, we helped our mentor in carrying the things needed in their celebration such as the fruits, wine and some utensils to be used after the program. We went to their gym as we helped our mentor in placing the stuffs. We were asked also to stay for awhile to watch their celebration program however, we were later asked to just go home and do the things we needed to do.

Foundation Day is a special occasion that is celebrated in schools all around the world. It is a day that marks the establishment of the school and its history. It reminds us of the hard work and dedication of those who established the school and contributed towards its growth. This helps to foster a sense of pride and belonging among the students, teachers, and staff members. Just as what we have observed, the principal of Abellana National School was in charged in giving awards in recognizing and acknowledging the hard work of their teachers. In this way, the school appreciates the efforts of those who have contributed to its success which will later result to increase the motivation of the teaching staff and non-teaching staffs in improving their work performance at school. Moreover, Foundation Day is a great way to promote school spirit and unity. The celebrations provide an opportunity for students, teachers, and staff members to come together and bond over their shared history and experiences. Seeing the teachers of Abellana National School wearing red, the food they have prepared for sharing and how they have designed their school in their celebration shows how they give importance to the celebration. This sense of camaraderie can help to improve the overall school culture and foster a sense of community.

To have this annual celebration is an important aspect in the teacher’s lives not just they have given the break with their teaching duties, they have been also acknowledged as a part of the teaching institution as well. This celebration is like a bridge in every teacher in the school which improves their relationship with one another that will result in having a healthier community they partake in. With this, each member of the school, nonteaching and the teaching staff will acknowledge their school’s history and the success they have been achieving over the years of teaching in the institution. The continuous growth and development of the school is also important to recognize as it opens the gate for improvement in later years.

Narrative Report #3

At the time of our arrival, the class appeared disorganized but some of the reporters had their visual aids ready. When the report started, it was clear that the first reporter wasn't ready for it and that her voice wasn't loud enough to be heard in the back. Additionally, the student continues to read his copy of the report. Randy, one of the reporters, is well-prepared with his report and a competent group leader, which helped his groupmate improve his report. While reporting is ongoing, the teacher expands on the topics covered by the reporter. To help students grasp the lecture better, the teacher engaged them in a dialectical discussion and used analogies from everyday life. Additionally, she made the classroom quiet so that the children could listen to the reporters while they discussed how to solve the inflation rate. Given that the reporters didn't include any visual aids in their report, they utilized the module and the book as references. Additional examples were provided before the brief quiz. While some students are responding to the quiz, others are waiting for their classmates' answers at the back. Only 3 students managed to complete the exercise within the allotted time when the teacher ordered all of the students to stand up after the quiz was finished. The teacher first allowed the students to answer in front of the class before guiding and correcting their responses. The teacher assigned a homework assignment for the students to do after class. When she taught her second class, students provided her visual aids with photographs to support their reports, but they only placed them when the teacher arrived, taking up class time. Due to their excessive talking and behavior as if there is no teacher in front of them, students are obviously not prepared for the class. Since the setting is already noisy and interferes with their ability to learn, it is impossible to hold students responsible for their actions. No matter how loud the reporter's voice is, they are unable to hear him or her. The second class used books as a source of information and followed the same reporting format. It so happened that their behavior during the short activity, they are the same with the previous class who’s not taking the activity serious and just relying to their classmates’ answer.

Prior to our first-class observation, the instructor had successfully managed the classroom by allowing students to participate in the activity and pay attention to what the reporters were talking about. Activities that involve solving problems require the teacher's efficient management. She was able to break down the discussion into steps and clearly define the concepts so that the students could understand how to proceed with their task. She even allowed them to complete a brief task to see how well they had understood the lecture. However, as the activity is ongoing, some of the students are not being very cooperative. But compared to the prior meeting, students seem to have learned something from this lecture. Additionally, it is preferable to have activities like these in a more engaging atmosphere so that the students can acquire the lesson more effectively. They could play a game or interact with their classmates while learning. The students will be able to retain the problem-solving process and the lesson more effectively as a result. Since they are going to interact with their peers and feel more motivated to learn as a result, this will be an effective way of learning. Additionally, the teacher

should make the back row of students feel involved from the start of class because it is obvious that some of them are not engaging. Even though some of the students in the back were not paying attention to the lesson, the teacher only paid attention to the students in the front. In a setting like theirs, where noises are constant and easily distracting, it is better to recognize one another and use some interactive teaching methods. Students will study effectively as a result, and their motivation will also increase.

Reporting, discussing, and solving problems may at times become boring. The student's desire to learn and pay attention to the discussion is, in fact, declining. It makes sense that some of the students weren't paying attention and were instead chatting with others in their class. Effective classroom management is crucial for the effective performance of the students. I might act in a similar manner if I were one of the students. Therefore, a more effective approach should be used in this situation to facilitate successful teaching and learning. It is crucial to take into account and ensure that every student participates in the discussion and activity and learns something. Games, peer interactions, and groupwork activities can all be used to keep grade 9 students engaged in the classroom. This is especially true given the way their classroom is set up. It is preferable to have an exercise rather than simply having a discussion with students, especially in the shared classroom set-up they have. It would be recommended to innovate the teaching approach for improved learning given the potential for distraction during the lecture. As a result, this week's observation helped me to understand how crucial good teaching strategies are to maintaining students' meaningful and successful learning inside the classroom.

Narrative Report #4

We first encountered the student teacher, Miss Pia, during the fourth week of our class observation while working with Mrs. Jumao-as, our mentor. She is a fourth-year student at the University of Cebu-Main Campus. Since Mrs. Jumao-as is extremely busy with the preparation for the third quarter exams, she administered the mastery test in the absence of her. She first instructed the students to place themselves one seat apart and place all of their belongings under their desks. The students will fill out the test papers that have been prepared for them, yet they must pay Php 3.00 each as well. The students were still making noises shortly prior to the start of the mastery test as if there were no teacher in front. Miss Pia responded appropriately, controlled the classroom behavior, and later covered the guidelines for the review test. The instructions, in my opinion, were ineffective because several students persist in remaining with their books and notepad open on their desks. Students will probably have the opportunity to review and study their notes and books for their answers. Students continue to converse with one another while the test is still being administered. They share answers, make hand gestures, whisper, and even poke each other sometimes. On the other hand, Miss Pia had seen some of the students’ conduct and was able to move around and see if they were still finishing their mastery test. Students were able to complete their mastery test within the allotted time. In addition, Mrs. Jumao-as had asked us to assist the other observers with preparing the test papers for the exam that will be held the following week. At the chapel, we had properly stapled and placed the papers that were needed. We proceeded to Miss Pia and continued our class observation after that. She used the same approach with the previous class, but the students seemed to be having trouble responding because they don't have tables to conveniently answer test papers. The fact that the students managed to create some noise during the test does not come as a surprise if they are unable to concentrate on their papers due to their setup.

Mastery tests are assessments that needs to be conducted properly. The students were able to complete the mastery test with few interruptions because to Miss Pia's management of it. The one-seat apart arrangement, however, has no impact at all because the monitoring is inconsistent throughout the entire period, as was seen when students were seen sharing answers with one another. To reduce the sharing of answers in this situation, it is essential to reorganize the seats in a random manner. By doing this, the teacher will be able to identify any concepts that the students failed to respond up on during the discussion and may then be reinforced or brought up again before the test. As a result, the students are able to identify the errors and can review them before exams. With this, individuals can gain new knowledge and possibly boost their confidence and motivation while answering questions on examinations because they will know what to answer to on test papers. In addition, it is preferable to retain monitoring the entire time in order to maintain good classroom management. Additionally, it is preferable to make instructions clear and efficient in order to reduce the number of repeated queries from students. Last but not least, in my opinion, it is preferable to motivate pupils before they take the test.

This week's observation has prompted me to think about how important it is to provide instructions and how crucial it is to retain control in the classroom, particularly before tests or examinations. It is vital to keep in mind that the students' levels of comprehension vary, and some of them may require repeated instructions. The ability to comprehend instructions effectively gives students additional time to analyze the exam items and provide accurate answers without uncertainty or confusion. The need of upholding authority in the classroom, on the other hand, is crucial if you want to reprimand your students. Students should pay close attention to their papers throughout exams in particular so that their learning can be further evaluated. In order to reduce the likelihood of cheating and other inappropriate behavior during the exam, it is preferable to maintain authority while the test is still being administered. In conclusion, this observation inspired me to come up with various concepts or handling techniques for students taking tests, such as rearranging their seating, for instance.

Narrative Report #5

On the last day of class observation, we had a happy and memorable day. We simply enjoyed a time of bonding with our students because it was also Miss Pia's last day of her internship as a student teacher. Mrs. Jumao-as was preoccupied with a meeting at the principal's office, therefore Miss Pia was left in charge of the class. Miss Pia first created an enjoyable environment in our first class by announcing the students who had performed the best. The students speculated who among their fellow students deserved the spot and were eager to find out who the class achievers were. On the other hand, Miss Pia had compared student excitement by providing thrills when announcing the top achievers. The students' satisfied expressions can be seen, and everyone is absolutely talking over one another. Students were asked to use the new television that was installed above the board after the announcement of the top achievers. Since they had nothing else to do for the duration of the period, Miss Pia permitted them to do so. After numerous attempts to get the television to work because there was no internet connection, the class was relieved to finally be able to watch it. They eventually got it to work, though, and after finding a song on YouTube, we all started singing along. Despite saying farewell to Miss Pia, the class concluded with a smile on everyone's face. Additionally, during the second-class observation, Miss Pia gathered the students' assignments and provided a sheet of paper on which the students could make their remarks, as it was the last day, she would be handling them. After that, she gathered the papers and prompted everyone to take some photos. Miss Pia was bid farewell by the students as we moved on to meet Mrs. Jumao-as. Our mentor was delighted to receive the certificate, tote bag, and pastillas we gave as a token of our appreciation. She had expressed her appreciation for having us and encouraged us to remain inspired to complete the course in spite of what we had seen while observing the class in lower sections. We then gathered for a photo with Mrs. Jumao-as and Miss Pia as a record of our experience and a remembrance of our class observation journey at Abellana National School.

The one problem that we observed during our last class observation was that some students had trouble navigating to the television. According to what we have seen, they ask other students in their class or any authorities for assistance in using the television. In which it appeared to lack knowledge on how to make these technologies work. Therefore, since they will be connecting the television to their classroom discussions for their other classes, the students need to be taught how to use the technology. However, unless allowed the flexibility to use it throughout their leisure time, students must be able to understand their limitations and be disciplined as to when is the appropriate time to use it. The internet connection was another concern. In addition to experiencing problems with access, they are unable to use the television's applications since they lack an internet connection. It is obvious that the school is unable to provide a reliable internet connection, especially when you take into account that the last classroom is located on the fourth floor. The issue with this seems to be that without an internet connection, the television might not be used. To avoid the need for an internet connection, this can still be used by inserting drives or downloading certain videos or presentations before the class discussion. Additionally, having a television

in the classroom is incredibly helpful for all of the students, especially those who learn best visually. When students see videos and photos that complement the books they have read, they can learn more. Additionally, having access to technology during class discussions encourages students and lessens their boredom mainly when learning Araling Panlipunan.

It is a really heartwarming experience for any student teacher to get recognition and respect for their efforts in handling the class. It was wonderful to witness the students' appreciation for Miss Pia serving as their student teacher. She is able to lead the class with authority, carry out her duties as a teacher and connect with others with ease. She provided a promising role model. It was also a good idea to say goodbye to the students in a bright and positive manner because the students would remember the experiences and the kindness a teacher showed them. Additionally, I gained a lot of knowledge through my Abellana National High School class observation, particularly when managing lower sections. The suggestions made by Mrs. Jumao-as will be remembered completely and serve as inspiration for us to go after our goals. Overall, this experience helps us learn from our experiences and prepares us to be better teachers in the future.

Reflection

The experience of being deployed to an assigned school to observe actual classroom teaching has been invaluable in bridging the gap between theory and practice. This reflection paper aims to discuss the five most significant lessons learned during this observation, focusing on various aspects of the teaching profession such as classroom management practices, building rapport with students and parents, preparing for classes, student engagement and adaptability.

One of the fundamental lessons I learned was the critical role of effective classroom management in fostering a conducive learning environment. I saw how our mentor established a supportive and orderly learning atmosphere that encouraged students to follow rules and cooperate. She made good use of approaches like establishing regular routines and using positive reinforcement. For instance, she usually starts class with a prayer, and she always had backup plans for reinforcing her expectations if a student didn't complete or exhibit a certain task or role in the classroom. I came to understand that good classroom management creates a safe environment where children may flourish intellectually and emotionally. It also lays the groundwork for meaningful learning experiences.

Building good relationships with students and their parents is really important for being a successful teacher. I saw teachers who made an effort to connect with students on a personal level and genuinely cared about their well-being and how they were doing in school. They talked to them, listened to them, and made them feel valued. Teachers also communicated well with parents. They regularly updated parents on their child's progress, had meetings with them, and had open and honest conversations. This helped create a partnership between teachers and parents, where they worked together to support the student's learning and success. This kind of teamwork made a big difference in how well students did in school.

During my field study, I have observed how our mentor reinforced the importance of thorough preparation. She meticulously planned lessons, aligned instructional materials with learning objectives, and utilized a variety of teaching strategies to cater to diverse learning styles. This helped me to understand how crucial it is to meet all of the students' requirements. I saw how Mrs. Jumao-as used a mix of teacher-led lectures, group reports, practical activities, and technological integration to effectively engage her students. When a student was unable to explain further on their report, Mrs. Jumao-as took over the lecture in a dialectical manner so that the students would better understand what was being discussed. Then, for more in-depth and real-world learning, she allowed students to consult the books as well as to do various assignments. This method of instruction aims to meet the diverse learning demands of every student by making the lesson simple to understand. These strategies boosted abilities in problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. I realized that using a variety of teaching strategies encourages student-centered learning and enables differentiated instruction, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.

The field study experience underscored the significance of student engagement as a driving force behind effective teaching and learning. I saw how our mentor's use of participative and interactive methods successfully piqued students' interest and encouraged a sincere desire to learn. She always calls someone from each row in order for them to feel involved every discussion. She lets them answer, read the book or even let them participate in short activities. She fostered a sense of ownership and enthusiasm among her students by fostering dialogues, providing opportunities for student involvement, and incorporating linkages to the real world. My conviction that active participation and relevance are essential elements of effective teaching was confirmed by observing the beneficial effects of student engagement on learning outcomes.

I also learned that being a good teacher means being able to adapt and be flexible. Teachers sometimes face unexpected problems, like when technology doesn't work, the television in the classroom we have observed, for an instance. What I noticed is that teachers were really quick to change their plans and find new ways to teach. They stayed calm and made sure that the learning still went on smoothly, even if things didn't go as planned. Being adaptable and flexible is important for making sure that students can keep learning no matter what happens.

My classroom observation experience has provided invaluable insights into the teaching profession. Effective classroom management, building rapport with students and parents, thorough preparation, student engagement, and adaptability were the five most significant lessons I learned. These lessons will undoubtedly shape my future teaching endeavors, enabling me to align theory with the real demands of the classroom. By implementing these lessons, I aim to create an engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for my future students. My awareness of the complexity of education has increased as a result of these reflections, which have also motivated me to always seek out creative and student-centered teaching strategies.

"IT'S ORIENTATION DAY!"

We had our orientation at Abellana National School during this time. The teachers and the school's principal gave us a warm welcome. We were given a positive orientation regarding the tasks we must complete while acting as observers in this school, which made for such a wonderful welcome.

"THANK YOU"

We are grateful to have Mrs. Jumao-as as our mentor, who has shared her feedback and ideas with us, the observers. She is such a cheerful teacher who always makes everyone feel delightful.

"CONGRATULATIONS"

The top achievers in this class were announced by Miss Pia. Since it was also her last day as their student teacher, she let them do anything they wanted afterwards.
