‘All aboard’ for Mary’s open day CRAIG WINTER MARYBOROUGH’S number one tourist attraction, the Mary Ann train is looking for new recruits.

There will be an open day on Saturday 13th November so the public can see all of her operations first hand.

Martin Jones, General manager of Client Services for Signature, says that residents will have access to many wonderful services, all available within the home.

“There will be a fully functioning café, chefcooked meals prepared fresh in-house daily, hairdressing and beauty salon, movie theatre, piano lounge, private

dining room for special occasions, a library and various activity rooms.” he said.

All rooms will be single with their own private ensuite and have individually controlled air conditioning units for personal comfort.

The home will also accept government funded residents.

Construction is well underway, and even with the COVID freight and procurement issues being experienced around the country, good progress is still being made towards the estimated completion date.

Owned by the Maryborough City Whistle Stop, the Mary Ann carried over 13,000 passengers in 2020 despite COVID restrictions and state border lockdowns.

Increased safety regulations mean that more volunteers are needed to both operate the train, and man the museum.

Immediate past President of the Whistle Stop Warren McPherson says that opportunities aren’t limited to working on the train or talking to tourists.

“One of our youngest active volunteers, Jackson Goodwin, has been with us for 4 years, and at the age of 23 is now a qualified passenger attendant/ guard.” he said.

“Jack has recently started in our inaugural steam trainee program, where, over a 12 month period, trainees will perform both practical training and theory examination, where at completion, depending on their aptitude, will be invited for enrollment for study and assessment in gaining a HR work licence for boilers and steam reciprocating engines, both being requirements for the position of locomotive drivers assistant and driver.”

Christmas trains conductor hangs up his whistle for the last time CRAIG WINTER

WHAT began as a hobby 22 years ago quickly turned into an obsession.

Malcolm & Alexandra Weber are well known for their extensive Christmas lights displays which have amazed and entertained viewers for years.

Their display includes a massive set of 3 train tracks that Malcolm built around and inside the home, including buildings and surroundings.

“He also built the two tracks inside on his own.

My Mum, myself and siblings have been his greatest supporters.

“We were only teens when our Dad started the light displays.”

The family sets a book up every year for the community to write their comments in about the display, and Erin posts on the Maryborough Community Facebook page so people can visit over the Christmas period.

For the past 22 years, the Weber’s trains and lights have attracted thousands of visitors, and sadly this year will be their last as they hang up their whistles for the last time.

“They flock in their thousands, inside and outside of our home.”

Daughter Erin says that it all began with a small timber track on the family’s pool table.

“We want to make this one special for them.” Erin said.

“It then became 3 train layouts within a few years.”

“There is an N scale, HO scale & a G scale garden track. My Dad built the entire garden railway, including all the buildings, light poles etc.” she said.

The decision to make this their last year has been a difficult one.

And judging from past attendances, this year will be the biggest and best ever for the Webers.

SUPPORT FOR OUR RAIL HISTORY While the government is continuously promoting the building of new trains, let’s remember that trains and manufacturing are part of our heritage and not a ‘new’ thing.

The Mary Ann is looking for volunteers, and like any not-for-profit association, they need younger members to

The current members will one day retire, and they need new blood to keep both the museum and the Mary Ann going into the future.

Volunteering builds confidence, provides skills and looks great on a youngsters resume when they go looking for work.

will see a motivated and enthusiastic employee.

There is much more work to be done with the Whistle Stop’s loco restoration, and that will need many hands to see it come to fruition.

Not only is the Mary Ann and museum a great asset to our tourism industry, attracting thousands of visitors to our region every year, but they represent the proud and solid manufacturing base upon which we were built.

Boredom got the better of us last year as we couldn’t travel, and what amazing discovery we made!

I’d completely forgotten the joy of just appreciating the season and the fact that others were so happy to share their own joy with others.

For probably the first time, we took notice of how much effort some families went to with the Christmas lights.

It wasn’t just about the number of lights each house had, but more about the creativity that had gone into each project.

We don’t have kids at home anymore and we tend to have a very quiet holiday on our own.

“We know that financial hardship as well as economic abuse, which may involve interfering with work or controlling or withholding money, reduces women’s ability to acquire and use money and makes it difficult to leave violent relationships,” Ruston said.

“We know the size of the house a woman is fleeing doesn’t matter – often she bundles the kids into the car, maybe the dog too and they leave with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.”

The payment is part of a two-year trial and will be independently evaluated to assess the benefit of the payment, including demand, eligibility criteria, needs of specific cohorts, and how it works with related services.

Prison recruitment campaign kicks off

QUEENSLAND Corrective Services is looking for locals to join the front line of public safety at the Maryborough Correctional Centre with 50 roles up for grabs in coming months.

Maryborough Correctional Centre general manager Kris Winter said QCS was looking for people with good communication skills and a desire to make the area a safer place.

Successful applicants will join 11 new officers who were sworn in at Maryborough last month.

“The Custodial Correctional Officer positions require people who would like to make a real difference to people’s lives, act as role models and address the behaviours which led people into prison,” Ms Winter said.

“While many of our officers choose corrections as a career early on in their lives, many come to the industry seeking a career change,” she said.

800 new jobs at Torbanlea CRAIG WINTER 65 TRAINS will be built at a new facility in Torbanlea at cost of over $7 billion, generating 800 new jobs for the district.

Local MP Bruce Saunders accompanied Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Treasurer Cameron Dick at the announcement in front of the Maryborough City Hall last week.

Mr Saunders said that the new $7 billion project was part of Labor’s original election commitment to the region, but that it tripled the promised investment.

“Instead of the promised 20 trains, we’ll be contracting 65 trains which will include carriages for the

cross-river project, and the increased transport system required for the Brisbane Olympics.” he said.

The now sleepy hamlet of Torbanlea in the late 1800s was a coal mining town, thriving with the endeavours of miners and their families.

Now there are just 880 residents according to the latest census.

The Torbanlea State School was opened in 1878 and the mine closed in 1960.

It is now set to become a thriving industrial hub once again with the building of the $239 million factory which will make our region the largest train building

facility in the southern hemisphere according to Mr Saunders.

“This is a great day for us”. he said.

Premier Palaszczuk stated that “It’s now clear we’ll need a full complement of trains to cater for growth in years to come.

“I want Queensland to benefit from this $7.1 billion investment. That means jobs for workers throughout our state.”

Along with the expansion of Hyne Timber, a new battery factory and the completion of the Rheinmetal munitions factory, locals are now hoping that the future growth of the region is assured.

A LOCAL man and woman claiming that Kabi land is being unlawfully developed stood with banners in the background as the new Torbanlea train factory was being announced last week.

JAY FIELDING BRISBANE buyers have snapped up a prime development site in Maryborough.

The sale of the Dominion Flour Mill site, on Kent Street opposite the Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens, will become effective in the middle of this month after the contract went unconditional last month.

The parcel of land was the home of the flour mill, which opened in 1892, and later a

sawmill before finally becoming the Bowerbird House second-hand goods dealership, which opened in the 1990s.

with plans to build an apartment complex after the remains of the mill were demolished in 2019.

It was the most northerly flour mill in Australia.

However, the development hit a snag over the heritagelisted archway, which Mr Moore said was unsafe and should be demolished as the engineering required to stabilise it was prohibitively expensive.

The property’s distinct main entrance archway, the centre of recent controversy, was built in 1915.

The mill, famous for its Silver Spray brand of flour, stopped operating in 1977.

Mr Moore told the Sun he hoped the site would be developed to its full potential by the new owners.

The protester’s GetUp petition website states that “Djaki Kundu (Rocky Ridge in English), also referred to as ‘the Gympie Pyramid’ is being destroyed as we speak, for a highway upgrade carried out by the Department of Transport and Main roads Queensland.”

“Maryborough’s” Governor retires JAY FIELDING

AFTER a lifetime of public service, former Maryborough schoolboy Paul de Jersey has retired.

Mr de Jersey was appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1985.

Mr de Jersey was the Governor of Queensland from 2014 until this week and previously was the Chief Justice of the Queensland Supreme Court from 1998 to 2014.

He has been the chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane from 1991 to 2014, was the vice present of the Australian Cancer Society from 1995 to 1998 and president from 1998 to 2001, a trustee of the National Breast Cancer Foundation between 1994 and 1999 and was the chairman of the Queensland Cancer Fund (now the Cancer Council Queensland) from 1994 to 2001.

In the late 1950s, he attended Albert State School where his father, Ronald, was the principal.

He completed his secondary education at the Anglican Church Grammar School before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours at the University of Queensland in 1971.

He was a part of the Queensland University Regiment from 1966 to 1971, and was commissioned in 1969.

Called to the bar in 1971 and appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 1981, he practiced in the commercial field of law.

Also in 1971, he married wife Kaye, a librarian, with whom he has three children and three

He was also the chairman of the Law Reform Commission of Queensland from 1996 to 1997.

Mr de Jersey was appointed the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1998.

As chief justice, he was patron of many charitable organisations, including Art from the Margins, the BBC Indigenous Fund and the UQ Pro Bono Law Centre.

Last year he visited to unveil the second plaque in his honour on the Maryborough Walk of Achievers.

The first plaque honours him as a chief justice, as well as his doctor and scientist brothers.

The second, which is also fittingly outside Maryborough Courthouse, recognises his contribution as governor.

Tree planting for mental health support

Maryborough urged to vaccinate to avoid ‘refusal of entry’ JAY FIELDING

MARYBOROUGH locals face being refused entry at businesses if they aren’t vaccinated when Queensland’s borders reopen next month.

“We want to make sure that Queenslanders can continue to support their local economy, so the best way to do that right now is to get vaccinated.”

Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Minister Mick de Brenni issued the warning during a visit to Maryborough last month to encourage people to get vaccinated.

Time is running out for people to become fully vaccinated ahead of Christmas.

“The window of opportunity is closing day by day,” Mr de Brenni said.

“From December 17, venues like your local pub, your tavern, it could be your local community club, it could even be your gym or your hairdresser, will be able to impose a vaccinated-visitors-only rule,” Mr de Brenni said.

The minister said it was important for the local economy to ensure vaccination rates were high in order to avoid snap lockdowns once the borders reopen.

“That means if you haven’t had your double dose by that time, you might find yourself unable to attend the things that you love,” he said.

“You might not be able to go to a pub or your

The Queensland Human Rights Commission says that being opposed to vaccination was unlikely to be a sufficient basis

for a discrimination complaint.

However, if people who cannot be vaccinated due to a protected attribute such as disability or medical conditions are refused entry because they are unvaccinated, that could represent unlawful discrimination.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland says business owners must be able to make their own decisions about who they serve.

“They don’t need ambiguous rules to follow, especially if it’s not clear how it helps them or the wider economy’s recovery,” CCIQ policy manager Cherie Josephson said.

“If refusing entry to unvaccinated customers is the right thing to do for the business and the wider economy’s COVID recovery, they need to be given resources to implement that change.”

The Queensland Hotels Association says some venues might see the value in locking out unvaccinated patrons in return for being able to operate at full capacity.

Chief executive Bernie Hogan said it was possible for licensed venues to check the vaccination status of patrons.

“We have been asking people for ID for decades.

We have the ability to refuse service on virtually any grounds that would make other patrons unsafe,” he said.

“So this is not a huge change from the rights licensed venue holders already have.”

As of October 25, 59.6 per cent of people living in the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service region, which includes Maryborough, are fully vaccinated.

Youth justice taskforce to target repeat offenders QUEENSLAND Police have announced a new strategy to case manage every serious repeat youth offender in Queensland as part of the next phase of the Youth Justice Taskforce reform agenda.

The Youth Justice Taskforce is focused on building intensive multiagency case management of high-risk repeat youth offenders in the top 10 per cent cohort across the state.

Assistant Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon said intervening and rehabilitating young offenders was crucial in breaking the cycle of crime and delivering longterm change.

“The task force is now six months on from operationalising the legislative reforms to tackle youth crime and while the preliminary indications are delivering the much-needed response to protect the community, there is a lot more work to be done,” Assistant Commissioner Scanlon said.

“We need to do everything we can to reduce reoffending by ramping up interventions and support beyond detention.

“We know this group of young people have very complex social and family dysfunction which will require a more tailored approach to ensure the

intervention is effective.

“Our holistic approach is to have all relevant government and nongovernment agencies involved in a timely and coordinated intervention strategy which can be sustained long term.”

Senior Executive Director of Youth Detention Operations and Reform at the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs, Michael Drane, said that repeat youth offenders must be held accountable, but they must also be given the opportunity to turn their lives around.

“We know this is a difficult task which

requires extensive intervention and is only effective after the very basic underlying causes of offending are addressed.”

He said.

The Youth Justice Taskforce began operations on February 15, 2021, while reforms targeting serious repeat offenders commenced on April 30 through changes to the Youth Justice and Other Legislation Act. The reforms included new laws enabling a presumption against bail for serious repeat offenders and the ability for a court to seek assurances from parents or guardians before an offender is released.

Festive grants announced CHRISTMAS markets, carols and New Year’s family fun fairs will be staged across the region thanks to grants to community and sporting organisations by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

At its meeting this week, Council approved the grants under the Community Festive Events and Small Township Festive Decorations programs.

Council biosolid strategy adopted Record fuel prices burn motorists AGRICULTURE will remain the mainstay of utilising biosolids generated from Fraser Coast sewage treatment plants.

JAY FIELDING DRIVERS in Maryborough are paying record-high prices to fill up.

At its meeting this week, Fraser Coast Regional Council adopted a new Biosolids Strategy that will cover future uses of biosolids.

The average price of unleaded in Maryborough hit 160.3 cents per litre last week, surpassing the previous record of 160.2cpl set in July 2008.

“The new strategy will build flexibility into the way we manage biosolids so we can take advantage of changes to processing technology,” Cr David Lee said.

“Biosolids are an unavoidable by-product in the sewage treatment process consisting of mainly water and organic compounds.

“They are often applied as a soil conditioner to improve soil structure due to the high nutrient value and water retention capabilities.

“Depending on their grade, biosolids may be applied to a range of uses such as composting, land application in forestry operations, topsoil, land rehabilitation and application to agricultural land.

“On the Fraser Coast, biosolids are currently used in the agricultural

The development of a new Fraser Coast Biosolids Strategy was prompted by the revision of the state government’s End of Waste Code and the imminent adoption of the National Environment Management Plan.

“Our new strategy is flexible enough to be able to adapt and change direction if there were changes to legislation such as tighter controls on contaminants like PFAS

or microplastics,” Cr Lee said.

“There are also other processes such as composting or biofuel production that could also be investigated.”

Council has four major sewage treatment plants at Eli Creek, Pulgul, Nikenbah and Aubinville.

There are four minor treatment plants located at Toogoom, Burrum Heads, Torbanlea and Howard, with the biosolids from the smaller plants going to one of the major plants for further processing.

“As countries open up from COVID-19 restrictions, international supply and demand issues have driven up oil prices leading to high terminal gate prices,” Ms Leonard-Jones said.

“Prices in Hervey Bay are yet to reach their

record of 163.1cpl, with averages for unleaded still three cents shy,” she said.

Jewellery robbery help sought

MARYBOROUGH police are calling for the public’s help after a large amount of jewellery was stolen during a break-in at a business on Adelaide Street.

Between 5pm on October 18 and 5.50am on

October 19, the business was broken into by thieves who smashed a glass sliding door.

Once inside they stole jewellery as well as a safe containing more jewellery and cash.

Buy Local gift card reaches 200 milestone THE 200th business has joined the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Buy Local campaign.

Long-standing Maryborough business, Earle’s Paint Place, has joined the network that will accept the Buy Local Gift Cards.

Fraser Coast Gift Cards are the cornerstone of Council’s Open for Business Buy Local campaign, which was introduced in response to COVID-19, Mayor George Seymour said.

“Buying local is the best way for people to support Fraser Coast businesses, it’s great for local jobs and great for our local communities,” he said.

“Every $100 spent locally provides at least a $180 benefit to the local economy through the multiplier effect which is why we’re urging everyone to get behind this campaign and support local businesses.”

Businesses from Tiaro, Maryborough and Hervey Bay are involved in the program.

Assistant to the Principal Michelle Griffen says that students who were involved in these programs complete a leadership training program that helps them with team building, communication skills and personal confidence, while also learning about ordinances such as child safety.

Having assisted in the Maryborough holiday program, students are then invited to travel with Chappy Amanda to take the program to outback communities.

High school leaders are given the opportunity to use their natural talents (dance/drama/ sports/craft) to lead the younger students and each 5 day program ends with a family BBQ and concert on the Friday night.

The team get to enjoy team building activities which quite often involve outback adventures (sitting on bulls/visiting properties/feeding young animals), team building activities (Masterchef Competitions/physical challenges) and community engagement

activities (planting trees for the council/painting murals in communities/ visiting Nursing Homes).

Students have also participated in drought relief activities like taking 200 food hampers to drought affected towns.

One recent trip saw teams deliver formal dresses to an indigenous community, give the girls free make overs and then arrange a professional photographer to do a free photo shoot for them.

The teams have a great deal of fun, learn to communicate confidently

to a variety of people, and have great opportunities to visit properties and outback communities.

Some teens that show promise in their leadership, are invited to a week-long leadership training intensive camp on a working cattle property near Blackall.

“This is a fantastic opportunity and a great growth experience for these teens who often take on leadership responsibilities at Maryborough State High School.” said Michelle.

Councillors experience Hat Day for Rotary a ‘Moment in Time’ JOHN ANDERSEN

AT THE monthly meeting of the Fraser Coast Regional Council on Wed. 20th October, the Museums of the Fraser Coast presented each Councillor with a signed copy of “Moments in Time Vol 2… the pictorial history of the Fraser Coast from 1867 to 2020.”

THE Rotary Club of Maryborough City recently launched their Fund-raiser for the Youth Mental Health First Aid project, with a Hat Day event at Portside.

Around 55 guests attended the annual Lift the Lid on Mental Health event where unique hats were the theme of the night as the Club raised money and awareness of mental health issues.

As well, two copies were presented to Council CEO Mr. Ken Diehm for display in the Hervey Bay & Maryborough Council offices.

“Moments in Time Volumes 1 & 2” were produced by the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum after representations from Mayor George Seymour about the need for such publications.

“They have become the definitive Books about the history of the Fraser Coast, with many hundreds of historic photographs, many having never before appeared in print.

Museum and the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum all presented books.

All of the Museums expressed their appreciation to Council for partial funding of the projects and mentioned the importance of Museums in the preservation of local history and of their importance to the tourism industry.

Offering a vote of thanks to all of the Museums, Councillor Dennis

Chapman mentioned how important the books are as a pictorial and written source of historical information, not just for Councillors but for other Government organisations, businesses and the general public.

Copies of both books are available from all of the Museums as well as selected outlets throughout the Fraser Coast.

Club President John Barounis said that 100% of the money raised during this year’s Hat Day goes directly to research helping the one in five Australians affected by depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and many other illnesses.

Many people have more than one diagnosis.

What are the chances of recovering from mental illness?

Most people with mental illness recover well and are able to lead fulfilling lives in the community when they receive appropriate ongoing treatment and support.

However, only about half of those affected actually receive treatment.

The majority of people who develop anxiety disorders and depression improve over time with appropriate treatment and support.

Dedicated refuge volunteers needed The Refuge is looking for dedicated people who are able to commit to regular days and time every week.

Well the Maryborough Animal Refuge could certainly use your help now!

They are seeking responsible adults to help keep the refuge running.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and able to work independently and as part of a team.

The cleaning shifts for dogs and cats start at 7am and go through till 10am.

They also have plenty of vacancies for social dog walker volunteer shifts and the times are a bit more flexible for dog walking.

Mary and Susan – Sister Rivers of the Fraser Coast LINDSAY TITMARSH IT IS not hard to understand how nontidal creeks and rivers basically follow the contour of the land they flow through.

In this situation, floodwater or another natural event can easily divert flows, creating a new path for the watercourse.

In areas such as the backwaters of the tidal Mary-Susan Estuary, almost no increase in water current occurs during floods.

Estuary receive almost no increase in current strength during floods, and the surrounding landscape is ‘dead flat’ (which it is), then one might expect creek side erosion to be minimal.

However, this is not the case.

While mainland creek erosion occurs mostly during rainfall events, tidal creek erosion is a natural occurrence, which is ongoing daily.

Tides ebb and flow twice daily (every day of the year).

Although German Creek is situated only a short distance from the mouth of the Mary River, it flows directly into Great Sandy Strait.

Unlike non-tidal streams which flow in one direction only, saltwater creeks flow both ways, and with constantly differing water heights.

This creek has almost no freshwater catchment, so quite often when the Mary is running with a big ‘fresh’, this creek will still be salty.

Small wave action and wash from boats can also be a factor in erosion.

Nearby Turkey Creek, which flows into the Mary has similar characteristics.

So, if the backwaters of the Mary-Susan

The natural tendency is for flowing water to continue travelling in a constant direction until an object diverts it.

In tidal creeks that obstacle is usually a bend.

That is why the current flowing around the outside of a bend continually erodes that part away, while the inside bank builds up.

The unused remnants of the now much-shortened Turkey Creek can still be seen as a diminishing mangrove covered ‘oxbow’ beside the river.

Turkey Creek drains a large portion of the mangrove wilderness opposite Tandora.

Research indicates that during the last Ice Age, the Mary River in this area was just a few hundred metres wide, instead of the 1.6 kilometres it is now.

An aerial photo taken in 1958 as part of a regular survey by a State Government department gives a great view of it.

One taken 56 years later indicates that the second bend in Turkey Creek has migrated the full 25 metre width of itself in that time.

Nearby Hornet’s Creek has also migrated to a new outlet.

If a tidal creek can change its course by 25 metres in 56 years, then imagine how much our river systems have altered in the 10 000 years since the last Ice Age? What about directional change over Earth’s last million years?

An 1889 chart of that section of the river indicates that Turkey Creek then had two more bends and exited way north from where it does now.

It is interesting to note that in 1889, a plan was drawn up to build a rock retaining wall across Turkey Creek – but that’s another story, as is how nearby Heath Island, no longer exists.

Approximately 22 metres of Mary River foreshore have washed away since 1958, while much more has been washed out to sea since European settlement.

Landscape centre celebrates IT’S already been a year since HRQ in the CITY opened the gates to their landscape and garden centre on Saturday 14th November, 2020.

Owner Nshara Kingston can’t believe it has already been a year.

“We have really grown over the year with the introduction of many new products to our range.”

The shop vegetable garden using their garden soil is thriving and feeding many.

The most exciting thing though is the arrival of the new delivery truck which can hold 3m3 of the mulch products and 2m3 of the quarry and soil products.

“The truck was meant to arrive in June this year, but arrived last week, Nshara said, “I’m calling it our birthday present.”

Supporting local business is something that Nshara values as it ensures employment and money remaining in the local economy.

New PBS listings to help thousands

FROM this week, Australians with a respiratory illness, early onset puberty and blood cancer will have improved access to subsidised medicines through new and amended listings on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a preventable and treatable lung disease, which causes the airways in the lungs to narrow, making it difficult to breathe.

About 1 in 20 Australians aged 45 years and over have COPD, tragically, in 2018 it was the fifth leading cause of death.

Breztri Aerosphere® (budesonide + glycopyrronium + formoterol) will be available from November 1, 2021 on the PBS to treat COPD. The three ingredients of Breztri Aerosphere® work to reduce swelling and irritation in the lungs and relax the muscles in the airways.

Together, they act to relieve and prevent shortness of breath,

wheezing and coughing.

Without PBS subsidy, around 68,000 Australians per year might pay more than $1,000 per year for treatment.

Also from 1 November 2021, Diphereline® (triptorelin) will be expanded to include the treatment of central precocious puberty (CCP).

In Australia, the average age for the onset of puberty is around 10 years for girls and 12 years for boys. In central precocious puberty, this onset occurs earlier - before 8 years of age in girls and before 9 years in boys.

More common in girls, CCP can cause physical, emotional, behavioural and social problems.

Diphereline is a new treatment option, which will help children manage the condition and reduce the number of consultations needed.

Diphereline® works by lowering the levels of the hormone oestrogen for females and testosterone in males that lead to pubertyrelated changes to the body.

Without PBS subsidy, around 800 Australians per year might pay more than $3,600 per year for treatment.

Earlier this year, Darzalex® (daratumumab) was listed on the PBS for the first time for use in combination with bortezomib and dexamethasone, as a second-line treatment for around Australians with multiple myeloma.

Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that develops from plasma cells in the bone marrow and it is estimated that around 2,423 Australians will be diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2021.

Darzalex® is a groundbreaking treatment mobilises the patient’s own immune system to fight the disease. This treatment will bring improved clinical outcomes and quality of life for those affected by this disease.

From 1 November 2021, these patients will now have access to a new subcutaneous form of Darzalex®, which means it can be given as an injection under the skin.

This additional treatment option for patients will provide a more convenient alternative, delivered as a 5‑minute injection that can be administered at home compared with the intravenous infusion which is given over several hours in a healthcare facility.

Without PBS subsidy, around 1,165 Australians per year might pay more than $136,000 per course of treatment with this new subcutaneous form.

Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt, said thousands of Australians and their families will benefit from these new and expanded listings, which will also reduce out of pocket costs.

“Since 2013, the Coalition Government had approved more than 2,700 new or amended listings on the PBS. This represents an average of around 30 listings or amendments per month – or one each day – at an overall investment by the Government of $13.9 billion,” Minister Hunt said.

“Without PBS subsidies many Australians would

Coach Blake Kroning was confident his team had the talent to give it a shake.

The team only lost one game in the lead-up; they were primed for the challenge of facing Brisbane 1 in the final.

Backing their defence, the Maryborough team withstood all that Brisbane could throw at them.

Goalkeeper Kiralee McCulloch was outstanding in front of the net, repelling the Brisbane attack on

“She was my player of the match, and she saved our bacon many times.”

Kroning believes the future is bright for Maryborough hockey with the young talent coming through.

In division two, the Maryborough 2 team finished fifth.

Maryborough Hockey hosts a final state championship this weekend when the under 15 boy’s take to the floor.

Downpours help legal Squire, Spotty and Schoolie Mackerel, Queenies and Trevally.

THE TEAM from FREEDOM FISHING SUPPLIES There’s nothing like a good down pour of rain and steamy hot days followed by afternoon storms to get the fish and crabs all fired up and on the move.

And with the reports coming in from both fresh and salt, it’s shaping up to be one top summer for fishing.

Fresh water first and our anglers have been having a great time chasing Bass in Tinana Creek and Petrie Park with fish reported in numbers averaging 45cm in size.

Early morning our late afternoon have proven to be the best times with the Bass smashing those surface baits.

The Barra are on out at Lenthalls, the smallest is about 70 cm Heading out to the Burrum 8 Mile where the fishing has been going off with reports of Grunter,

Platypus Bay has also been keeping our sports fisho’s entertained with Spanish mackerel, mixed varieties of Tuna, G.T’s and Cobia.

Southern and Northern gutters have been producing a mixed feed of reef including Coral Trout, Hussar, Grassy Sweetlip and Venus Tusk fish.

Moon Ledge, Sammy’s, The Artificial and Mackenzie’s Ledge all reporting black spot tusk fish up to 6 kilos, Estuary Cod, Blackall, Purple tusk fish and grassy Sweetlip.

Into the Sandy Strait now where the reports have been coming in thick and fast with everything from Threadfin and Blue Salmon, Grunter, Mangrove Jack and Estuary Cod throughout the entire estuary system, and large summer Whiting and Flathead populating the sand flats.

Large Jew, Threadfin Salmon and Grunter all reported from Deep Creek and the Diamonds have also been fishing well with Mangrove Jack, Estuary Cod, Flathead, whiting and bream.

Shark inlet has been fishing well for quality summer whiting with the average size around 30cm and a few 40cm elbow slappers taking anglers by surprise.

Kauri, Black swan and Tuan creeks have all reported quality Mangrove Jack in numbers taking shallow diving lures, live baits and mullet strips.

The Mary River is still on fire with Threadfin and blue salmon, Jew, grunter, flathead, black and silver bream and large summer whiting with the majority of fish reported between Beaver Rock, River Heads and Susan River.

Quite a few Barra have been landed but remember that it is now closed season for them.

Still a few arrow squid being landed around Fig Tree and reports of jelly prawns coming from the majority of creeks on the mainland and the island.

For the land-based anglers, there are still plenty of Flathead and summer whiting around. Hard bodied lures with a rattle have been working well on the Flatties and either yabbies or worms for the summer whiting.

REMINDER: Our saltwater Barra season is now CLOSED until 1st February 2022 THIS WEEK'S BRAG BOARD Luke and Tash are loving chasing the Barra – #couplegoals #tashiswinning. Next up is Archer who also got into the Barra at Lenthalls, nice job mate. Next is Bob with a Blue Salmon. It weighed 4.26kg. Last up is Tim with a beautiful Bluey. It weighed in at 7.48kg.
