This year’s pre-poll voting location will be the Maryborough Pensioners Association Hall at 81 Adelaide Street.

A record 10 candidates have nominated for the seat.

Pre-polling voting hours will be: • Monday, May 9 to Friday, May 13: 8am to 8pm • Saturday, May 14: 9am to 4pm • Monday, May 16, to Thurs, May 19: 8am to 8pm • Friday, May 20: 8am to 6pm

Police officer remembered

CRAIG WINTER IN 1926 an aspiring young police officer died in Maryborough Hospital after a riding accident in Eidsvold.

A husband and father, Constable Robert Alexander had sustained serious internal and spinal injuries when he was thrown from his horse, and the 120 mile (200km) transfer home to Maryborough on rough tracks, and at such a distance would not have helped his chances of survival.

This is typical of the time, when good medical attention was scarce in regional areas, and police regularly transferred between the larger towns and outlying hamlets.

Officers mustered their own horses and smaller police stations were effectively self-reliant.

Robert Alexander was born in 1900 in Scotland, and his family emigrated to Australia when he was 11 years old.

He joined the police force in 1922, and was appointed a Constable registered police number 2622 - in 1923.

His six years of service saw him transferred to at least four different regional stations.

Last week officials and family gathered for the dedication of his newly restored grave at Maryborough Cemetery.

The restoration project was undertaken by the Friends of Queensland Police Museum with fundraising over a number of years.

The Museum plays an important role in fundraising and research and the grave restoration is just one of many projects they have undertaken in regional Queensland.

The ceremony was attended by Constable Robert Alexander’s granddaughters Natalie and Angela, Federal

Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien - who is himself a former QPS Officer - Assistant Commissioner Brian Connors, Superintendent Michael Sawrey, the President of the FQPM Bob Burns, Qld Fire and Emergency Service representatives and other Alexander family members.

Reverend Fakava Finau read the dedication service before officials and family placed wreaths on the site.

Constable Alexander is also remembered at the Queensland Police Memorial and National Police Memorial.

Annual antiques fair on this Saturday of his famous jackets, the new maritime display will be officially opened and National Parks will be handing over the Cat35 from Central Station on Fraser Island to the museum.” he said.

THE Hervey Bay Historical Village once again hosts their annual Antiques Fair this Saturday from 9.30am.

The Fair has become a popular place to pick up a bargain, and organisers say that there are at least three times the number of stalls as last year.

The Village’s John Andersen says that both the ABC and 107.5 Fm will be conducting live broadcasts during the day.

“There’s plenty happening and of course the museum and village will be fully open to everyone.”

The special half price entry fee of $5 will give the first 400 people

Free antiques appraisals will be available from 9.30 to 11am and 1-3pm by certified auctioneer and valuer Craig Winter with a limit of two items each.

Fashion parades and vintage cars will round off the events.

At 11am there will be a live auction of items from the Village by Winter

Auctions.

Proceeds go towards running the award winning museum and the addition of local historic artefacts.

Stallholders from around the region and beyond will be offering all types of antiques and collectables, and there is plenty of hot and cold food on offer during the day.

The annual Antique Fair - Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum at 13 Zephyr St, Scarness.

Gates open at 9.30 and the fair runs until 4pm.

a Teacher.

Our teachers are under more stress than they have ever been with 40% of teachers reporting physical assaults last year, additional curriculum demands in a time when there have been up to 30% of teachers off with either Covid or isolation in the last term and teachers leaving the profession at record rates.

How about we dob in a politician for constantly breaking promises, or lawyers for ripping people off or for that matter almost any profession.

If accepting a box of chocolates from a grateful student or parent is a breach or professional standards we are in a very sad place indeed.

There are a record number of candidates for the Wide Bay electorate in this election.

We asked each of them the same questions...

NATHAN BUCKLEY One Nation My experience as a lawyer has given me a greater understanding and appreciation of the damage caused by overreaching state and federal governments.

I love Wide Bay. It’s my home. I moved to Wide Bay to raise my family several years ago. The lifestyle and natural environment were the drawcards.

People from all over Australia have contacted me and I’ve worked with them to ensure their voice is heard.

Over the past two years, I have seen the impacts of lockdowns and restrictions on the livelihoods of the people of this great electorate.

For much of the past two years, I acted for many people subjected to COVID-19 vaccine coercion and as an advocate for Australians’ freedom of choice.

Why are you running for the seat of Wide Bay?

What are your values and core beliefs?

Bringing back and protecting Australian values, rights and freedoms.

What are the big issues

facing Australia?

Australians should be free to make their own choices about their health and the medical procedures they undergo. People shouldn’t be forced to choose between their job and getting the jabs. I’ve encountered thousands of people who’ve been fired from their jobs or excluded from schools, hospitals, aged care facilities, childcare centres, public venues, and retail shops.

This pandemic of discrimination must end. I’m standing for One Nation in Wide Bay because Pauline Hanson has been an inspiration with her efforts to make

vaccine coercion and discrimination unlawful.

One Nation is the only party pushing for citizeninitiated referendums to give everyone a choice on decisions that affect their lives, rather than having politicians dictate to them how to live their lives.

What are your priorities for the seat of Wide Bay, particularly Maryborough?

Our electorate needs more done and I’m ready to get to work for a better Wide Bay. We’ve seen in recent times how neglected the Bruce Highway is. I will work to get funding to expand the Bruce Highway and flood proof the Bruce

Highway so it’s not cut off in flood events. I’d like to work to better protect areas prone to flooding within our electorate to ensure minimal disruption to people’s lives.

I’d also like to have better outcomes and quality assistance for aged care within our electorate, as it’s a great place to live, work and retire.

Most importantly, I want to return Australians’ lives to pre-Covid normal. Let everyone get on with their lives.

Why should people vote for you?

I’ll listen, act and work for the people of Wide Bay.

I’d like to see bipartisan support from all levels of government irrespective of political ideology.

If elected, I’m ready to bring energy, transparency and accountability to the table. I’ll work tirelessly to ensure better outcomes for our electorate.

I was the solicitor on the record who took on Brad Hazzard, the NSW Minister for Health, last year to challenge vaccine mandates and public health orders.

I believe government should fully fund public services that underwrite the full potential of our communities. Funding that leads to world class standards in the provision of healthcare, education and infrastructure.

I do not believe every aspect of our lives should be the target of private profit. Particularly essential services that we cannot do without if we are to maintain a basic standard of living.

Climate change is clearly the number one issue we as nation and part of the global community face.

The Liberal/National coalition governments of the past nine years have been grossly irresponsible in not seriously acting on emission reductions.

Not planning for the transition to a clean green economy and not planning for the transition of fossil fuel miners into other mining jobs or new industries.

The states have been the drivers of renewable

energy take up.

The Federal government tells us a fiction about their alleged action, hanging emission reduction claims on the past achievements of the Gillard-Greens carbon price and reduced land clearing intended to combat soil erosion not actually part of an emissions reduction plan.

The Greens fully back the demands of the scientists, 75 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030, net zero by 2035.

The Coalition if anything is denying the science and if you’re not backing the science who or what are you backing?

The fact that the Coalition still has plans to open up still more coal and gas says it all.

The majority of Australians in every electorate want fair dinkum climate action. It’s time to start voting for it, that means this time vote for the Greens.

The housing availability and affordability crisis will not be fixed by those who seek to profit from the human right of having a good secure home.

The Greens public housing policy will see the federal

government take control of a national problem.

The Greens in the balance of power would aim to build 1 million homes over 20 years, 125,000 will be reserved for a shared equity plan. Rents will be capped according to your income and will be a home for life if that is your choice.

What are your priorities for the seat of Wide Bay, particularly Maryborough?

It is clear that people on low incomes, on casual work hours and support payments like Job Seeker at most at risk from rising cost of living pressures.

The Greens are in a strong position to gain the balance of power in the Senate and possibly win a couple of lower house seats.

The Greens would work to raise Job Seeker and other support payments to $88 per day. Also give Pensioners a fair dinkum increase of $244 per fortnight.

Roll out a public housing build for people on low incomes to combat homelessness. Continue to defend the NDIS from cost cutting measures that only hurt the most vulnerable in our community. Bring

dental and mental health into Medicare.

Free TAFE and uni.

Why should people vote for you?

I’m just a guy prepared to stand by the community focused policies of the Australian Greens. My hope is that policies will win the day over personalities.

That the country has reached the point where we recognise that the major parties and the micro parties of the right don’t see Australia as one, but as targeted “special interests”.

Voting one for the Greens lead senate candidate Penny Allman-Payne could also see Pauline Hanson replaced with Penny, joining Larissa Waters.

One Nation almost always voted with the Liberals anyway.

KELLY JACOBI Independent My great, great, great grandparents settled in Maryborough in the 1870s after coming to Australia by boat from Germany.

With Danish and English ancestry also, I was born in Kingaroy in 1974 and grew up in Nanango, before moving to Mooloolaba when I was 10.

I returned home to Sunshine Beach seven years ago where I now live a simple, happy, healthy life.

Professional background?

After school, I did a GAP year in England where I worked in a school for disabled children.

I also worked as an office manager for Barnaby Joyce in my

20’s, studied natural medicine and worked with health practitioners, am a self-taught artist, photographer, designer and ran my own bowhunting business while living remotely.

I currently enjoy one-onone disability support work.

Why are you running for the seat of Wide Bay? I have to. I can’t sit quietly anymore and watch what’s happening to our country.

There’s too much at stake. There are serious systemic issues within our government that will destroy our nation if we don’t make major changes this election.

What are your values and core beliefs?

I value honesty, integrity,

honour and genuine love and care for people and place. I believe the world is beautiful and amazing and that being alive is a precious gift.

A fundamental and necessary principle of living is the freedom to choose our path, to learn and grow by experiencing the consequences of our choices. I believe life is (generally) what we make of it and the better our choices, the luckier we get.

What are the big issues facing Australia?

Globalism and corruption.

All other issues such as our current financial crisis, reliance on foreign supply for everything, housing shortage, pollution and health issues, flow directly from these two.

When malevolent foreign powers seek to remove our

free agency and mislead us to our own demise, we can either complain, pretend everything’s fine, or do something about it. I agree with the idea that “evil prevails when good men do nothing”.

I have zero tolerance for arrogance or injustice and our blatant national corruption in league with globalists aiming to destroy and control humanity is totally unacceptable to me.

Sadly, most Australians don’t comprehend the danger we’re in because the truth is so well censored.

Still, everything I know about this has been on public record for decades, for those who genuinely want to find out.

What are your priorities for the seat of Wide

Bay, particularly Maryborough?

My urgent priority is to address systemic federal issues for the reasons explained above. Most local challenges stem from problems at the highest level. My primary policy goals are as follows; • End corruption and unlawful rule • Restore constitutional democracy • Support sovereignty, unity and self-reliance • Ensure wise stewardship of natural resources • Rebuild, protect and enhance our nation.

My ultimate goal is to help create a truly representative democracy for the enjoyment and benefit of all Australians; for everyone to live freely, harmoniously, to flourish and grow as individuals, as communities and as a unified, vibrant nation.

TRACEY BENNET United Australia Party I am originally from the North of England and I moved to Australia in 2007. I married my husband, Max, in 2021 and we have lived in Cooran in the Noosa Hinterland for nearly five years with our kelpie rescue dog, Chyna.

My career has been a diverse mix of business and industries, everything from small family owned through to multinational companies, working my way up from administration through to senior management.

Why are you running for the seat of Wide Bay? I am running for the seat of Wide Bay because

I can no longer sit back and watch the two party duopoly of LNP and Labor erode our rights and destroy our Australian way of life.

I care deeply for people and can see how much I could improve the region by listening to the needs of the constituents and prioritising essential needs such as healthcare and aged care for example, to improve our lives and help everyone to prosper.

What are your values and core beliefs?

I am honest, passionate and tenacious.

These are qualities that have helped me succeed in business and would be valuable to me in working to represent the

constituents of Wide Bay in parliament. I don’t run off an ego, I think of others before myself and believe these are the values and qualities we need to ensure that this role is executed correctly, of the people, by the people for the people.

What are the big issues facing Australia?

The big issues for Australia at present are the looming interest rate increases and the UAP have solutions to help save Australian homes by capping home loan interest rates to a maximum of 3 per cent for the next five years.

We also need to pay off the trillion dollar debt racked up by the Liberal and Labor parties and we

have a plan which will not impact the disposable income of our constituents by introducing a 15 per cent export licence on Australian Iron ore.

We plan to help our regional areas thrive by introducing a 20 per cent tax concession for those living more than 200km from a capital city and increasing the retirement pension by $180 per fortnight.

What are your priorities for the seat of Wide Bay, particularly Maryborough?

Wide Bay needs destination hospitals returned so that all residents can be treated in their electorate rather than having to travel

to either Hervey Bay or Sunshine Coast.

Aged care needs to be addressed so that we can offer our elderly community a better experience, particularly when it comes to the important area of nutrition, returning dignity to the dining experience, and increasing the feeling of home.

Liberals again, they are all in it together.

The United Australia Party have the people and the policies to save Australia, they truly are the freedom party that will bring back the Aussie way of life under Craig Kelly’s leadership along with protections so that our future generations will not suffer as we have.

I have practiced as a barrister and as a solicitor in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sydney.

By the time I was 30 I was a millionaire and

at 34 I was a bankrupt (on my own petition) driving taxis in Sydney.

I was released from bankruptcy upon application to the Bankruptcy Court in Sydney after a bit over one year.

I have worked at a number of jobs at different times.

For the last 15 years I have been a farmer some or many would say hobby farmer and a truth seeker.

Why are you running for the seat of Wide Bay? I was offered the opportunity by the Australian Federation Party and this gave me the opportunity to continue my

What are your values and core beliefs?

I think that my main core value is that I hate lies, hypocrisy and corruption.

Today’s world is full of these. I believe in God and have spent some time seeking the answers related to God. God gave us free will and debt slavery takes our free will away.

What are the big issues facing Australia?

The major parties fail to represent the interests of the people.

They represent the interests of international bankers who rule the world and Australia by virtue of their monopoly of the power to issue our money supply through their debt based monetary system.

Less than two per cent of our money supply is issued by our government. The remainder is issued by the foreign-controlled private banking system in the form of debt.

LLEW O’BRIEN LNP I have lived in Gympie for the last 35 years where I married and we raised our family of three children who were born at the Gympie hospital and educated in the public state school system.

I left school at 15 to care for my mum Yvonne who was terminally ill with motor neurone disease, an experience which has shaped my dedication to improving access to healthcare and support for carers.

I had a number of jobs in the region before I joined the Queensland Police Service and that, together with my life experiences, inspired me to extend my service to our community through the Australian Parliament.

Professional background Before being elected to Parliament in 2016, I served as a police officer in the Wide Bay region for 16 years.

Through my experience as a road crash investigator, I became increasingly passionate about improving road safety, and decided to run for Parliament to highlight the need for better and safer roads in Wide Bay, especially the Bruce Highway.

In 2018, I worked with the community and convinced my colleagues in Parliament to fasttrack delivery of the four lane Gympie bypass project, by securing $800 million. This project will ease congestion

through Gympie, better connect Maryborough and Brisbane, improve access to the Cooloola Coast, and most importantly save lives. More recently I worked alongside the community to secure an extra $183 million in additional Federal funding to build a four-lane Tiaro bypass, instead of the dangerous two-lane design proposed by the State Government – now we need the State Government to fast-track construction.

My experience as a road crash investigator, seeing the devastating toll that crashes have on the people involved, their families and their communities, will always be at the forefront of my mind and I will continue to fight for safer roads through Wide Bay. Why are you running for the seat of Wide Bay? I am committed to building a better Wide Bay and providing strong representation to achieve results for families, businesses, community, sporting and service groups, throughout Wide Bay. I am guided by my life and career experiences and my particular interests in road safety, mental health, supporting Veterans and improving aged care, to deliver for Wide Bay. There are 286 jobs that are being created through an $82.4 million investment by the Liberal and Nationals government on the 11km upgrade of the Bruce Highway from Maryborough to Torbanlea.

There are over 100 new defence industry jobs at the Rheinmetall Nioa projectile forging plant in

Maryborough’s industrial estate that have been created through a $28.5 million investment I secured from the Liberal and Nationals Government.

I’ve secured a new Headspace service in Maryborough to improve mental health outcomes for young people; an Industry Training Hub in Maryborough to better connect school leavers with training and job opportunities; $18 million for offstream water storage to support Maryborough’s agricultural sector; fairer pay for Occupational Therapists who look after our Veterans; and $700,000 to upgrade the Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum so more people can view the unique and historic collection of memorabilia.

What are your values and core beliefs?

I believe Australia’s best years are ahead of us and I want to ensure everyone in Wide Bay has the opportunity to share in our nation’s prosperity. I have received state and national medals for my police service, including for ethical and diligent conduct and I apply those standards to my work as the Member for Wide Bay. My record on calling for the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation, and Financial Services Industry, and the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, crossing the floor to support an open debate on vaccine mandates, and fighting the Queensland

What are the big issues facing Australia?

With the situation in Ukraine and growing concern about China, we need to maintain a strong focus on defence and national security and we will continue to keep Australia’s borders secure. Maryborough is now home to new defence industry jobs at Global Manufacturing Group and Rheinmetall Nioa that have been supported by investments by the Liberal and Nationals government.

Global uncertainty is putting pressure on cost of living, and the Coalition government is delivering a one-off cost of living payment of $250 to help 48,214 pensioners, disability support recipients, carers, jobseekers and eligible selffunded retirees in Wide Bay. About 52,300 taxpayers in Wide Bay will benefit from the $1080 low and middle income tax offset and a $420 cost of living tax offset, and we’re also cutting fuel excise in half, saving drivers 22 cents per litre – saving of $30 a week for a family with two cars, or $700 over the next six months.

Since coming to office the LNP government has approved more than 2,900

new or amended listings on the PBS, and the Liberal and Nationals government is making them cheaper for you.

What are your priorities for the seat of Wide Bay, particularly Maryborough?

Creating jobs, boosting agriculture, delivering infrastructure and services that families and businesses need, and keeping our economy strong to ease cost of living pressures, are top priorities for me.

We need a four-lane Bruce Highway all through Wide Bay, starting with the four-lane Tiaro bypass, to save lives and open up the Fraser Coast economy for future growth. With the Gympie bypass due to be completed in 2024 we need to get the Tiaro bypass done, and then fill in the gaps between Curra and Tiaro and Tiaro and Maryborough.

Federal funding to the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service which includes Maryborough hospital has increased 124 per cent from $99.5 million in $2012-13 to $$223.6 million in 2020-21.

A new $5 million Veterans Wellbeing Centre has been committed for the Wide Bay and Burnett region.

The Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum is home to the largest and most valuable collection of war memorabilia outside of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, and a $700,000 commitment from a re-elected LNP government will enable more people to experience

the Museum.

Why should people vote for you?

I stand by my record of delivering for Maryborough and Wide Bay, and providing strong representation to achieve results.

We’ve secured funding for a range of projects including the four lane Tiaro bypass, a new headspace service in Maryborough to improve mental health outcomes for young people, an upgrade to the jetty on K’gari (Fraser Island), Maryborough’s PL Travers Bank of Stories, and the expansion of the Brolga Theatre carpark.

I will continue my work to create jobs, like the $28.5 million I secured for Maryborough’s Rheinmetall Nioa Munitions Plant, which has created 100 jobs, investing $785,150 for new innovative technology at Maryborough’s Global Manufacturing Group, securing 58 jobs, and $1.12 million to support a new laminated timber production line at DTM Timbers in Kent Street, and $82.4 million for the Maryborough Torbanlea Bruce Highway upgrade.

I broke my neck at Lakeside Park motor sports complex last year; since then I’ve improved my health and fitness and you can often catch me at a ParkRun session.

DANIEL WILLIAMS Australian Values Party I was born in Nanango and moved to Maryborough in 1973.

I did most of my schooling at the Christian Brothers/St Mary’s Catholic College.

I am 55 years old and have twins, a boy and girl, who are 21. My current hometown for the last 26 years is Noosa Heads.

Professional background?

I spent 12 years in the R.A.N. as a Navy Clearance Diver. I was a professional fireman on the Sunshine Coast for over 14 years, the last 12 years were spent at Noosa Fire Station.

the seat of Wide Bay? I decided to run for the federal seat of Wide Bay after following Heston Russell’s consistent and persistent battle to get the Royal Commission for Veteran Suicide across the line. This led to Heston forming the Australian Values Party.

I was impressed by the leadership and integrity of Heston during this process.

I have spent nearly all my life in the Wide Bay electorate, and I know the people and challenges we face.

What are your values and core beliefs?

I study a degree in Safety Leadership at Griffith University.

My core beliefs I learnt

from my parents, which is why, if I win the seat of Wide Bay, I will be immediately putting processes in place and recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aged Care, because I had to watch my mother suffer in the current system that is broken and treats those who have worked hard for our country live in below standard conditions not fit for a human.

What are the big issues facing Australia?

The big issues facing our country is that for a decade now we have neglected our regional neighbours, we have neglected our defence force and the tools they require to do their job.

A housing crisis that makes affording a home unreachable and that drives out our essential workers, to the point where we cannot attract them.

Floods and fires, we need to take a proactive approach to preparing or fixing the historic problems that face these towns every several years.

Having a self-sufficient security force within our region.

My priorities for the Seat of Wide Bay is to find a solution to reduce the damage that the floods create to our businesses and communities.

For more than a decade

approach anymore where we forget the devastation and wait until next time and react again without any long-term plan or solution.

As well as the flood crisis, my priorities for Wide Bay and especially Maryborough is to put in place all recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aged Care.

I think people should vote for me because lived experience and experience within this electorate, especially over 40 years, gives me insight into the people of this region and the challenges we face in

It is my observation that when a political party has been in office for too long that they take the electorate for granted, they get very lazy. This is what has been happening with this electorate and hence why we are all suffering.

I will never say no or give in when I see wrong. I hate when I see wrong

or the vulnerable and innocent being treated wrongly.

I hate it when the elderly who worked hard and lived their life to support this country are now treated with scorn and disdain.

What are the big issues facing Australia?

The big issues facing Australia are the expensive cost of living; the fact that wages or income are not keeping in line with the cost of living.

More and more people just can’t live on their wages and especially on government benefits.

More and more people are facing homelessness and forced sales of their homes. We are in a financial crisis. We do not have enough homes for the needy or those who now cannot find rent.

We are in a housing crisis.

Prices of homes have skyrocketed twice the amount they were two years ago. Owning a home is out of reach for most people.

GEOFF WILLIAMS Labor I was born and raised in Townsville, North Queensland. I left school after Grade 11 to start an apprenticeship as a boilermaker.

I have a partner of 28 years, a wonderful daughter and two lovely granddaughters. We’ve lived in the Wide Bay for seven years, currently in Bauple and prior to that we lived in Glenwood.

We had to move when our landlord decided to sell.

Professional background I’m a boilermaker by trade and changed to crane driving around ten years ago, I have also been trained and worked as a wall frame and roof truss estimator, I’ve worked in the manufacturing, maintenance, construction and mining industry.

I’ve also worked around Australia when we spent two years on the road travelling Australia with our then-teenage daughter and have

worked in the Northern Territory, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, where I’ve spent most of my working life.

Why are you running for the seat of Wide Bay? In December 2019/January 2020 I came home from a nine-week shutdown to items on the news showing the bushfires raging at that time, I watched the men and woman of the Rural Fire Services battling bushfires that were out of control, then to my surprise and shock I heard that our Prime Minister was in Hawaii on holidays.

Not only that, he had lied about going on holidays but his staff had covered up where he was and to add insult to injury he was reluctant to return.

When he eventually did and only after two brave rural firefighters had lost their lives, he was angry and belligerent that his holiday had been interrupted and, to quote his words, what could he do “he didn’t hold a hose”.

I thought then that there

had to be something better than what we had and I’ve since learnt our country and our people need a lot more care than the current government wants to give it.

After the bushfires, it just got worse with his never taking responsibility for anything, always blaming others and only being around for announcements and photo ops, never any follow-ups.

The Wide Bay is considered a “safe seat” so doesn’t get as much as attention as marginal seats. This is unfair, all seats should get attention based on their needs not because of vote numbers.

What are your values and core beliefs?

Honesty, integrity, responsibility and accountability, all the attributes which we should be able to depend on from our current government but can’t.

What are the big issues facing Australia?

Unemployment and

underemployment despite the bogus figures that the current government spruiks, the latest Roy Morgan survey puts unemployment closer to 8.5 per cent. Social and affordable housing because we currently have a housing crisis, Local manufacturing and secure jobs and health and aged care. There are other issues at this time but they are many and varied and would probably take up a page just by themselves.

when we had a national underemployment rate of around eight per cent making a cumulative total of approximately 17 per cent overall. Social and Affordable Housing, and this is a problem right throughout the Wide Bay.

What are your priorities for the seat of Wide Bay, particularly Maryborough?

Local Manufacturing and secure jobs, we saw the result of what happens to a highly casualised workforce when Covid-19 initially hit and the amount of people that were put out of work and had no sick or annual leave to fall back on to help them cope financially.

I feel the priorities for Wide Bay are similar to those I’ve listed for Australia as the problems appear to be widespread and not confined to one area of our country.

Priorities for the Wide Bay would have to be unemployment and underemployment are higher than usual in the Wide Bay. The last figure that I had for the Wide Bay unemployment here was nine per cent and that was

Health and Aged Care, the results of which we know from the Aged Care Royal Commission and these problems have still not been rectified and are on going.

When Covid hit we couldn’t even manufacture our own facemasks and hand sanitiser and this from a country that had its own thriving car manufacturing industry.

I also feel Maryborough as well as Gympie will benefit from Labor’s proposed $200m per year

disaster prevention and mitigation policy to help with flood proofing communications, to name just one benefit.

Why should people vote for you?

I believe in honesty, integrity and accountability which I’ve previously stated and I think our governments should be held accountable for their actions as we, the general public are, so why not them. I’ve also been a blue collar worker all my life so I know what it’s like to have to struggle, save and sometime scrimp to be able to afford things.

I’m also a renter and don’t own my own house so I know the impact the current housing crisis can have.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you.

There isn’t much people don’t know about me.

I like old cars and old machinery especially old Holdens.

Witches gather to celebrate Yule with market in Howard THE Witches Market where dressing up and attending witches workshops is all part of the atmosphere will make its way to Howard on June 25.

As part of Yule Celebrations, the markets will include traditional stalls during the day, and special events that night.

Stallholder and Workshop applications are now open for this amazing and funfilled day.

Organiser Wayne PinaRoozemond said that this is more of an event than just a market.

The Pagan celebration of Winter Solstice (also known as Yule) is one of the oldest

winter celebrations in the world.

Ancient people were hunters and the seasons played a very important part.

Because of this many ancient people had a great reverence for, and even worshiped the sun.

The Norsemen of Northern Europe saw the sun as a wheel that changed the seasons. It was from the word for this wheel, houl, that the word yule is thought to have come. At mid-winter the Norsemen lit bonfires, told stories and drank sweet ale.

It was also the Druids who began the tradition of the yule log. The Celts thought that the sun stood still for twelve days in the middle of winter and during this time a log was lit to conquer the darkness, banish evil spirits and bring luck for the coming year.

Many of these customs are still followed today and have been incorporated into the Christian celebration of Christmas.

Shots fired in Maryborough Wildlife talks back at library police pursuit JAY FIELDING A 22-YEAR-OLD Torquay man has been charged following the pursuit of an alleged stolen vehicle in Maryborough on Monday.

Police will allege that 5.45am the man was involved in an altercation at a Jupiter Street address, during which shots were fired.

No one was physically injured. Police say the man then left the scene in a grey Mitsubishi Verada which had been stolen from a

Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road service station at about 11.30am on Sunday.

A firearm was also seized.

The bridge was closed to traffic during the drama.

Maryborough police attempted to pull the driver over however the vehicle failed to stop. A police spokesperson said officers then started a low-speed pursuit in the Maryborough area, before the man abandoned the vehicle on Lamington Bridge.

The man has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, threatening violence (discharging a firearm), possessing shortened firearms, unlawful possession of weapons, evading police, driving without a licence, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and obstructing police.

The spokesperson said the 22-year-old then jumped into the Mary River, before he was taken into custody.

Bail was refused and he was due to appear before Maryborough Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

THE Fraser Coast Branch of Wildlife Qld has announced the return of their popular wildlife talks in conjunction with Fraser Coast Libraries after a covid hiatus.

The first speaker for the year will be member Carol Bussey who will share her thoughts on global warming at the Hervey Bay Library on May 13 and at the Maryborough Library on May 27.

She has been a passionate advocate in

the quest to stop burning fossil fuels and has been vocal in opposition to the opening of new coal mines.

A proposed mine at Aldershot was concerning news to all local conservationists.

On the national scene, the opening of new coal mines are on the drawing board even though esteemed climate scientists are warning of irreversible damage to the planet if temperatures rise 1.5° higher.

Being a young girl I was aimlessly scrolling through social media when I saw that our local show society Fraser Coast Agriculture Show Society advertising for entries into the Queensland Rural Ambassador Awards as well as the Queensland Country life Showgirl Awards.

Being interested, I entered as a Rural Ambassador which is for those who are between 20-30 where it allows for people to promote Queensland Agriculture and be a part of rural communities.

THOUSANDS of young drivers have been taught lifesaving skills at Rotary’s Young Driver Awareness courses over the years.

The training incorporates such things as learning how little truck drivers can see on the roads, defensive driving skills, and talks from police, professional drivers and confrontingly, accident victims.

The RYDA program has been running here since 2010, and last year involved more than 140 volunteers and organisers.

Over 1,700 students completed the program in 2021.

VIEW Clubs call on volunteers to reconnect with community

MARYBOROUGH VIEW Club is calling on members of the community to consider volunteering for children’s education charity, The Smith Family, as part of National Volunteer Week (16-22 May).

VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a leading women’s organisation with close to 300 clubs across Australia, all dedicated to supporting Australian children in need with their education through The Smith Family.

Members do this through community fundraising, spreading awareness, and volunteering.

We are very excited that in just 18 months we have managed to raise enough funds to sponsor 3 children and to help provide funds for older students to have internet access, an essential in today’s educational setting. for women to join us in supporting The Smith Family and we’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch and come along to our next meeting to learn more about VIEW.” Meetings are held at the RSL on the second Friday of each month during which time we have raffles and a trading table which are our main source of fund raising.

They also hold regular social outings during which some fund raising is done.

The club is trying to find the means to set up a Smith Family Office here in Maryborough so we can have a home work centre and volunteer tutors to help with the students learning needs.

Staff from the Smith Family also help parents to

understand the demands of schooling today and coach them in ways to help their children learn more easily.

The Smith Family’s CEO, Doug Taylor, said “We are very grateful to all VIEW members for continuing to donate their time and energy throughout these turbulent times.

While volunteering provides a fantastic

opportunity to give back, it’s also about building a community and support network that makes such a positive difference to everyone involved,” he added.

There are guest speakers at every other meeting who enrich members with the knowledge of other organisations and individuals and the work they do.

“Last year, COVID meant we couldn’t have that hands-on connection with the community, which was really hard for a lot of people. We have also had two floods already this year so many people are struggling to stay positive.

“Volunteering is a great way to get back out there, make friends, and feel like you’re really making a difference to the lives of young people and their families,” she said.

“SplashSide has proven popular since it opened in June 2021 and we are disappointed that it will need to close for a few weeks while the pump is replaced,” he said.

“The facility is still under warranty so a replacement pump will be covered under that warranty.

FROM THE MARYBOROUGH ANIMAL REFUGE

BLANCHE is a 2 ½ year old tabby girl with stunning green eyes.

She has been at the Maryborough Animal Refuge for nearly 6 months, arriving in November 2021 with 7 kittens.

There is a video of Blanche on the Maryborough Animal Refuge and Pet Boarding Facebook Page that shows her enjoying over one minute of stroking. You can see how much she enjoys it.

Early one morning, when the manager was doing her rounds before the Refuge opened, she discovered 4 tiny newborn kittens in Blanche’s pen.

Blanche had been scheduled for desexing the following week. Little did anyone know that she was already pregnant again.

Such is life for an undesexed female cat – constant pregnancy and birth. Blanche spent some weeks in a foster home while she raised her kittens to adoption age.

All of Blanche’s kittens from both litters have now been adopted, but she herself is still at the Refuge.

Blanche has always been a timid cat. She doesn’t have a nasty bone in her body, but the managers believe that she fears people, possibly because of previous unkindness.

Being fostered in a home for a few weeks has helped her to come out of her shell a little more but she is still not completely comfortable with people unless she knows them well.

She is slowly starting to trust the volunteers at the Refuge.

One of the managers says, “She is the only cat I have ever met here at the Refuge that will roll over and get belly rubs.

She will also smooch up to you and push you to keep patting her and giving her the attention that she wants. You will know

Blanche is looking for a quiet home with someone who can offer her the love, affection and, most importantly, the patience she requires to become a perfect companion for someone.

Once she gets to know you and is comfortable around you, Blanche will be your best friend.

Two others cats who have also been at the Refuge for far too long are Smokey and Whitee.

They had been advertised a few weeks ago, but unfortunately, soon after, the Refuge had to quarantine the Cat facility in order to address with an infectious outbreak.

In order to maintain the highest level of hygiene, all the cat areas were closed to the public.

This, of course, meant that Smokey and Whitee could not be viewed. They are now both ready to receive their visitors.

SMOKEY is a black 20-month-old ragdoll. She is a sweet and affectionate girl who loves being the centre of attention. She is not shy and enjoys being brushed and groomed.

However, she draws firm boundaries when she has had enough and is more suited to a home with children over 12 years who will understand this. If you are looking for a cat who is not needy but enjoys having your attention as well as her space, Smokey is your girl.

more mature-aged lady.

Whitee has been passed over time and again because she is so shy.

Unfortunately, when the cat section of the Refuge was in quarantine, it reduced her opportunities interact with humans, which has made her more withdrawn again.

She needs to experience the kindness of humans in order to build her trust.

The ideal for Whitee is a quiet house, preferably as the only cat, and a patient owner who will not expect too much from her too soon and will give her time to come out of her shell.

As her picture shows, she is not happy at the Refuge and needs her own safe home.

She is toilet-trained to a litter-tray and has only ever been an inside cat.

Blanche, Smokey and Whitey are all desexed, microchipped, wormed and vet-checked. Their adoption fee is $180 each.

Japanese subs in Maryborough?

DURING the early stages of the Pacific War, it was feared that Japanese Imperial Forces would invade Australia.

They were very close to the Fraser Coast at times when they filled the freshwater tanks in their submarines from the flowing creeks of K’Gari (Fraser Island).

It was feared that a sneak attack with midget submarines might be carried out on partly completed Walkers Ltd war ships and cargo freighters tied to wharves at Maryborough.

To eliminate the threat, an anti-submarine net was deployed across the Mary River.

supported on large rafts made from hoop pine logs lashed and bolted together.

To ensure these remained in place, they were anchored to huge concrete blocks which were moulded on the nearby riverbank.

The blocks were moved into position by using a winch on the log punt ‘Lass O’Gowrie’ operated by Cliff Sanderson and Doug Kingsman.

To enable river traffic to operate, a separate section of net supported by square ships’ tanks, was swung between two rafts positioned mid-river. When the gate was unhitched, it was carried open by the tide, then it was winched closed again.

The site chosen for tactical reasons, was just upstream of the mouth of Saltwater Creek, near an area called Stoney, (originally Sheridan Island).

Military personnel who were stationed on the Island Plantation side of the river, operated the gate. Telephone wires connected them to authorities in Maryborough.

Large interwoven coils of steel rope supported by a heavy top cable reached low enough to prevent an underwater craft from passing. The top cable was

If a submarine contacted the net, forcing it to surface, armaments had to be onsite to eliminate the threat. A ‘25 Pound’ field gun was dug in on the

side of the high sloping riverbank almost opposite where Churchill Mine Road intersects Hervey Bay Road.

The large artillery unit overlooked the stretch of river on either side of the net and was zeroed in on the critical target area.

Another similar field gun was positioned downstream on the southern bank of the Mary River at Leslie Reach, where a checkpoint monitored all river traffic.

Positioning the gun on the big bend there, allowed it to cover the upstream waterway beside Dundathu Reach, as well as downstream towards the Heath Reach of the river.

The British 25 Pounders, (later Australian made) were so named because they fired a projectile of 87.6 mm calibre (diameter), weighing 25 pounds (11.3 kilograms).

They were one of the success stories of World War II. Their new technology allowed them to replace two separate big guns from World War I.

They were used in the Australian Army into the 1960’s and were still used by the Army Reserve (CMF), when I served five years with the outfit from 1968.

During World War I, big bore short range howitzers were used to fire up and over front-line troops and into enemy positions which could have been concealed behind ground obstacles or in trenches.

Long-barrelled field guns were used for long distance operations.

The 25 Pounders were designed to serve both purposes. Previous big guns used ammunition which had the brass case containing the charge, crimped to the projectile to form one unit. The new ammunition came with the components separated.

Anti-submarine netting removed from Sydney Harbour was used to create a shark -proof swimming enclosure at Scarness, Hervey Bay. (Hervey Bay Historical Museum) and below, this Google view of the Mary River shows the position of the anti-submarine net as well as the two field gun emplacements.

Charges in the brass cases came in small fabric bags and were sealed off with a temporary cap. The gunnery officer had a range chart which indicated what charge was required for the distance the target was.

When in use, the cap was removed, and the required number and type of fabric bags were loaded. Less bags were used for shorter ranges. The projectile was placed in the loading block and rammed home - with the case following.

The only time the two came together was just prior to firing. This

technology allowed the 25 Pounder to cover all ranges out to its maximum distance of 12 000 metres.

The 105mm and 155mm artillery weapons of today still use this technology.

One experience I found interesting, and which

still applies today with the big guns, was to watch the black base of a projectile as it spun out of the gun barrel and curved gracefully on its way.

Our unit did not operate the 25 Pounders, but we were observers when others did.

New COVID-19 oral treatment on PBS GREG Hunt, MP Minister for Health and Aged Care’s office this week said that from May 1, the second, prescriptiononly, COVID-19 oral treatment will be available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for Australians at high risk of developing severe COVID-19.

Paxlovid® is an oral anti-viral medicine which can be used by patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at high risk of developing severe disease. This medicine will help reduce the need for hospital admission.

Adults who have mild to moderate COVID-19 – which is confirmed by a PCR or a Rapid Antigen Test and verified by the prescribing doctor or nurse practitioner – and who can start treatment within five days of symptom onset, can be prescribed Paxlovid® if they are 65 years of age or older, with two other risk factors for severe disease (as increasing age is a risk factor, patients who are 75 years of age of older only need to have one other risk factor), if they are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin, and are 50

years of age or older with two other risk factors for severe disease, or they are moderately to severely immunocompromised.

The PBS listing for Paxlovid® means eligible Australians can access this medicine from their local community pharmacy with a prescription from their doctor or nurse practitioner.

Patients will only pay a maximum of $42.50 per script, or as little as $6.80 with a concession card.

This announcement follows the listing of Lagevrio® (molnupiravir) on the PBS from 1 March 2022. Around 5,000 patients have already received Lagevrio® through the PBS. These PBS listings support the National Plan to Transition Australia’s COVID-19 response.

It’s recommended they use telehealth to consult their doctor and ask their pharmacy to arrange for Paxlovid® to be delivered to their home, if necessary.

In 2021, the Australian

Government secured 500,000 courses of Paxlovid®. Another 500,000 courses have now been secured for delivery throughout 2022 for supply through both state and territory health departments and the PBS, with the option to procure additional courses if required.

This means that at least 1 million courses of Paxlovid will be made available to ensure at risk Australians have access to this treatment when they need it.

Paxlovid® is already available through the National Medical Stockpile (NMS)— Australia’s strategic reserve of supplies for national health emergencies. This path of access continues to remain available for supply to state and territory governments on request.

State and territory hospital systems provide complementary mechanisms for access where the prescriber considers treatment is clinically indicated but the patient is not eligible under the PBS.

The Government has provided Paxlovid and a range of other COVID-19 treatments to state and territory health departments via the NMS for use in people at risk.

The Government has also provided Paxlovid to Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Organisations and the Royal Flying Doctor Service for use in people at risk.

To date, the NMS has deployed 42,867 packs (courses) of Paxlovid.

“Since 2013, the Coalition Government has approved more than 2,800 new and amended listings on the PBS. This is at an overall investment by Government of over $16.5 billion.” he said.

“The Morrison Government’s commitment to ensuring Australians can access affordable medicines, when they need them, remains rock solid.”

RACQ is also urging both sides of government to help expand the national electric vehicle fastcharging network, and progress public access to the EV fast charger network as identified in Infrastructure Australia’s Infrastructure Priority List.

BRENDAN BOWERS HOCKEY: The rest of Queensland now knows what Maryborough Hockey has known for a long time after Kathy Rogers was named Hockey Queensland Volunteer of the Year.

The award was announced on Tuesday, April 26, via live stream, with Rogers awarded the prestigious honour for her many years dedicated to Maryborough Hockey voluntarily.

Rogers has been Treasurer of the Maryborough Hockey Association for over 25 years and was awarded life membership of the

association in 2006.

It is not the only role she is responsible for with the association.

She is also the database administrator, website administrator umpire’s coordinator and COVID SME. She writes, implements, and oversees all safety plans for Maryborough Hockey’s local competitions and state championships.

“I was amazed and shocked,” she said.

The award will not change Rogers or her roles with the association.

“It was nice to be recognised, but the warm messages of congratulations that I received made it very special,”

She volunteers between 20 and 30 hours a week to ensure the Hockey Association runs smoothly.

Most of the messages followed a similar path stating that the award was well deserved and great recognition for her efforts.

however with anglers averaging 1 out of 5 fish making it to the boat.

THE TEAM from FREEDOM FISHING SUPPLIES IT’S been hard to find a break in these winds but fortunately there has been a few.

Let’s have a look at whats being caught.

Sports fishos have been in their element this week with the pelagic fishing at its best, and it wasn’t hard to find the fish with hundreds of birds pointing to all the action.

Longtail Tuna have been working the bait balls from the Arch Cliffs through to Rooney’s. They are taking a variety of lures including soft plastics but the best results are coming from 2 inch metal slugs.

Sharks are a huge problem

Spanish, Grey and School Mackerel are also in numbers, taking medium to deep diving lures and the first of the Snapper have been reported from the Arch Cliffs along with quality Grunter.

The Southern and Northern Gutters have been fishing well with anglers landing quality Grassy Sweetlip, Cockies, Scarlett’s, Hussar and a few reef Jacks.

A variety of Mackerel have been landed on small metal slugs off the jetty at Kingfisher Bay and Mackenzie’s Ledge is producing a mixed bag of reef fish including Estuary Cod, Blackall, Grassy Sweetlip and Purple Tusk Fish.

Anglers are reporting some nice catches of Winter Whiting still on the drift between the reef Islands and Tinnanbah.

The average size is still

around that 20 cm mark.

There are some good Summer Whiting on the flats, yabbies are the best bait.

Legal Squire have been in numbers on Tinnanbah Ledge along with purple Tusk Fish, Grassy Sweetlip and Estuary cod and Trolling Medium diving lures in the channels throughout the Sandy Strait has produced quality Spanish and Grey Mackerel.

The mud crabs are still on the run with not many coming home without a good feed.

Prawns are also on the menu with reports from the Sandy Strait to Buxton.

The Mighty Mary has to get a mention with quite a few Threadfin being caught up to 1.3metres.

The colder months big Silver Bream and Black Bream are just starting to make an appearance with a few being landed.

BRAG BOARD First up is the Thready master Gary with a beautiful Mary River Threadfin, it weighed in at just over 9kg. Next is Kat with a Flathead, it weighed in at 1.4kg.

Jorja is impressed with her mudcrab. Michelle and Melissa got a nice feed of Summer Whiting in the Strait.

BRENDAN BOWERS WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: The Fraser Coasters wheelchair basketball team continues to improve and is setting the pace at the Queensland Classics Wheelchair Basketball tournament.

The improving Fraser Coast team are playing in B grade with games running over three days.

The team includes players Peter Kalbfell, Mark McIntosh, Jess McDowell, Jack Boettcher, Craig Boettcher, Sephi Kalbfell and Anita Absolom.

Jess O’Neill is the manager with Mitch Gilmore coaching.

They gave also sent two referees, Ollie and Lachlan Collishaw.

Beginning on Saturday, the team faced Toowoomba in their first match, coming away with a 44-14 win.

They could not match the Sunshine Coast in their next game going down 22-6.

Toowoomba 31-21.

When going to print, the team was currently involved in the final day of the competition with one match to go before finals.

Coach Mitchell Gilmore believes his team have a real opportunity to play in the B division final.

They won against the Gold Coast in their third match in a tight one 30-26 before capping off day one with a 24-24 draw against Toowoomba.

It caps off a busy week for the Fraser Coasters, with Emerald Wilmshurst and coach Michael Oxley partaking in the Australian Gliders training camp before the Queensland Classic.

Sunday’s results included two wins against the Sunshine Coast, but they went down to the Gold Coast 36-22 and
