To Our Dear St. Mary’s Academy Family,

It is with a spirit of gratitude and pride that we share with you the

2012 President’s Progress Report. This publication is about the many people who care deeply about our beloved St. Mary’s Academy. Its pages are filled with stories of generous donors, committed and talented faculty and staff, highly dedicated and capable Board members and the students whose lives are enriched by an education uniquely designed for young women.

These are very exciting times for St. Mary’s, with our school at an unprecedented moment of strength and success. St. Mary’s Academy is enjoying capacity enrollment, students are educated by a passionate and accomplished faculty and staff, we are on sound financial footing, and we are led by an Administrative Team and Board of Directors committed to preserving our values and traditions while creating the roadmap for the future.

What does that future look like and how will we get there? First and foremost, we always will be mindful of our rich, 153-year history and the bold examples and sacrifices of our Foundresses. We will remain committed to an educational model that integrates the intellectual, spiritual, ethical, physical and social development of our students. We will

maintain our position at the forefront of education and consistently be a leader in developing programs that meet the needs of the changing times, emphasizing new technologies and awareness of the global community.

Our vision, when combined with the clarity of our mission, values and philosophy, will serve as our navigational constellation, guiding our planning and decision-making. It will be an exciting and compelling future.

We are grateful to all of our loyal supporters who journey with us, our generous and involved alumnae community, parents of current and past students and our many donors and volunteers whose gifts large and small have made all the difference in our current success and will help to position us for the brightest possible future. To quote one of my favorite Chinese proverbs, “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade.”

Mary and Mark Stevens — A Landmark Gift

St. Mary’s Academy 1980 alumna makes largest private individual donation in school’s history Mary Stevens (Class of 1980) and her mother, Virginia Mathews, at the 2012 St. Mary’s Academy Food for Thought Tuition Assistance Luncheon 2

t Christmas, Virginia Mathews opened a gift box from her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Mark Stevens, and was shocked to find not a necklace or a scarf but a $2 million check made out to St. Mary’s Academy to establish an endowed scholarship fund in her honor.

The gift marks the single-largest individual donation in St. Mary’s 153-year history. The Virginia Mathews Endowed Scholarship will provide tuition assistance to help make the same exceptional education enjoyed by both Mary (Class of 1980) and her sister, Molly Bjorklund (Class of 1985), accessible to young women whose families require a helping hand.

“Knowing that there are choices in Portland for private education, I want St. Mary’s Academy to be an affordable option for the brightest candidates who will go on to do great things and remember that they had been helped and will give back once they can,” Mary said. “It is also important to me that St. Mary’s remains a financially secure single-gender school.”

This gift is intended to help middle-income families requiring a partial scholarship to put St. Mary’s within reach.

“We are deeply grateful to Mary and Mark for this remarkable gift and for the way they have championed one of the school’s highest priorities.

This gift helps safeguard our commitment to keeping a St. Mary’s education accessible to more students. It truly helps to secure the future of our school, and we are inspired that it pays tribute to such a wonderful woman,” said St. Mary’s Academy President Christina Friedhoff.

Mary flew up from California in November to attend St. Mary’s Food for Thought Tuition Assistance Luncheon with friends and family,

including her mother. At the luncheon, she heard current students and alumnae speak of their gratitude for the financial assistance that made their dreams of a St. Mary’s education a reality. Their stories struck a chord.

“Shortly after Food for Thought, I was thrilled to receive a call from Mary. Hearing about the need for tuition assistance really resonated with her, and she and her husband felt compelled to make this incredibly generous gift that will allow the school to provide aid to more families,” Friedhoff said.

Mary’s impact on her alma mater goes far beyond philanthropic support. The way she lives her life and her commitment to her family, friends and Catholic values speak highly of the caliber of women who graduate from St. Mary’s. Her example inspired Marilyn Whitaker, her dear friend since kindergarten, to consider St. Mary’s for her daughter, Mary Whitaker (Class of 2016). Both mother and daughter couldn’t be happier with their choice.

“My daughter Mary is a freshman at St. Mary’s today because of Mary Stevens and the role model she is for young women,” Marilyn said. “Mary Stevens has always appreciated her St. Mary’s education. She knows the sacrifices her parents made to send her and her sister Molly to St. Mary’s. Mark and Mary are genuine in their desire to help sustain the single-gender high school experience for girls.

Their generous gift is a testament to their commitment to assisting families in sending their daughters to St. Mary’s Academy.”

St. Mary’s endowment provides an enduring source of financial support for fulfillment of the school’s mission of providing a premier collegepreparatory education for young women. Growing the endowment is a priority for St. Mary’s. The Stevens family’s $2 million gift represents a major leap toward achieving that goal.

About St. Mary’s Academy’s Endowment Endowment interest income supports tuition assistance, as well as St. Mary’s academic programs and co-curricular activities.

The school’s endowment includes 51 endowed scholarship funds, which assist in providing access to a St. Mary’s education for the 40 percent of students receiving financial aid. These funds are critical in meeting the rising need for tuition assistance. St. Mary’s awarded more than $1.1 million in financial aid for the 2011-2012 academic year, an increase of 170 percent over 10 years ago.

St. Mary’s endowment allows the school both to preserve capital and to supplement the operating income provided by tuition and annual gifts. As of June 30, 2012, St. Mary’s endowment totaled $6.1 million. St. Mary’s reported an overall growth in endowment fund assets of 12 percent for the 2012 fiscal year.

2012 Academic Highlights • 100% of the Class of 2012 graduated.

• 99% of the Class of 2012 proceeded to college.

• $11.8 million in merit-based scholarship were offered to the 152 graduates of 2012.

• St. Mary’s Academy’s Class of 2012 boasted two National Merit Scholarship Program Finalists, seven National Merit Commended Scholars and two National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars.

• 92% of students scored a 3 or better on Advanced Placement (AP) exams, garnering possible college credit. 35% earned a 5, the highest score possible.

• St. Mary’s added AP Calculus, AP Latin/Virgil and PSU Challenge Calculus 2 and 3.

• St. Mary’s Science Olympiad team won its sixth Science Olympiad State Championship and went on to place first in the Experimental Design event at the Science Olympiad National Tournament.

• A St. Mary’s student co-authored a peer-reviewed astronomy article that was published in the Journal of Double Star Observations.

• 47% of the Class of 2012 planned to major in math or science in college.

• St. Mary’s students took first place and honorable mention nationally in Wildlife Forever’s Fish Make You Smarter writing competition.

• Eight St. Mary’s students presented research papers at the 22nd Annual Young Historians Conference at Portland State University. One student received honorable mention for her paper.

• Two St. Mary’s students received writing awards from the University of Portland’s Garaventa Center for Catholic Intellectual Life and American Culture.

he St. Mary’s Academy community celebrated many accomplishments throughout the past fiscal year. If the achievements of our students, faculty, alumnae and school define St. Mary’s today, it is your support that strengthens our tradition of excellence and guides our future. Your generosity enables us to excel in all areas of educating young women, which include rigorous, college-preparatory academics; competitive athletics teams; thriving visual and performing arts programs; service, leadership and faith development; and outstanding faculty. Your gifts enable our students to grow, aspire, achieve and make a difference in the world today and tomorrow.

Collaborative Teaching Style Yields Stellar Achievements in Math Responding to an increase in the number of students entering St. Mary’s Academy at a higher math level, the school added PSU Challenge Calculus 2 and 3 in the 2011-2012 academic year.

Students taking the yearlong class, led by Ellen Tevik, earn college credit and gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the subject.

Prior to the addition of this course, students wanting to further their study of calculus needed to do so through a local two- or four-year college. Now, they have access to a higher-level class without having to leave St. Mary’s and its exceptional faculty and learning environment.

“It allows them to continue their love of math and makes for a smoother transition from high school to college.

It also looks very impressive on college

applications,” Tevik said.

St. Mary’s Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus students, led

by Cynthia Heller, also are excelling. All 18 students who took the AP test in 2012 Ellen Tevik, St. Mary’s math teacher scored a three or better, earning possible college credit. On the five-point scale, two-thirds of St. Mary’s students scored a four or higher.

Researchers from the Sudikoff Family Institute for Education & New Media at the University of California, Los Angeles found that women who attend single-gender schools exhibit greater confidence in their mathematical abilities.

That’s certainly true at St. Mary’s.

The growing number of St. Mary’s students earning college credit either through AP exams

or the PSU Challenge Program is evidence that the Math Department’s methodology, which emphasizes structured investigation in small groups, coalesces with the ways in which many women learn best.

Numerous studies, including the American Association of University Women’s seminal “How Schools Shortchange Girls” report, indicate that girls perform better in classrooms that emphasize collaboration and peer-driven exploration. That is exactly what St. Mary’s College-Preparatory Math Program provides.

Most St. Mary’s math classes are not centered on lectures but rather give students the opportunity to work cooperatively in peer groups to discuss not only the solutions to problems but also different ways of reaching answers and the reasoning behind them.

This style of teaching and learning leads to greater understanding and also prepares students better for college and beyond, said Susan Melvin, Math Department Chair.

“I firmly believe that in most every job you have to be able to work with other people and communicate your ideas clearly to be successful,” Melvin said.

2012 Athletic Highlights • St. Mary’s Academy placed third in the state at the 6A level in the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Oregonian Cup, which honors a school’s quality in athletics, activities, academics and sportsmanship.

• St. Mary’s basketball team placed sixth in the 0SAA 6A State Championship. Zoie Sheng ’12 made the All-Tournament First Team.

• St. Mary’s swim team placed fifth at the OSAA 6A State Championship Meet. Ellena Basada ’12 was named Mt. Hood Conference (MHC) Swimmer of the Year by league coaches.

• St. Mary’s Nordic ski team placed sixth at state. The alpine ski team finished second in the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association (OISRA) State Freestyle Competition.

• St. Mary’s golf team placed seventh at the OSAA 6A State Tournament. The team won its seventh consecutive MHC title and 19th league title overall.

• Olympic soccer star Tiffeny Milbrett served as keynote speaker at St. Mary’s 40th anniversary of Title IX celebration, which took place on the Nike campus in May. • St. Mary’s track and field team won its first-ever OSAA 6A State Meet and took first in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter races and the 4X100 and 4X400 relays.

• St. Mary’s cross country team won its 11th consecutive MHC title and placed second at the OSAA 6A State Meet. Individually, three Blues placed in the top 15 at state (Paige Rice ‘14 at fifth, Ellen Patterson ’13 at 10th and Lacey Conner ’16 at 15th).

Rice was named MHC Girls Athlete of the Year and made the Oregon Track & Cross Country Coaches Association’s First Team All-State.

• St. Mary’s welcomed Olympian Joan Benoit Samuelson as the 2012 Food for Thought Tuition Assistance Luncheon keynote speaker, and Patterson as the student speaker. After Food for Thought, members of St. Mary’s track and cross country teams had the opportunity to run with Samuelson, who won the inaugural women’s Olympic marathon in 1984.

• Rice finished seventh at the Nike Cross Northwest Regional Cross Country Championships. She went on to place 73rd out of 194 competitors at the national championships. She was one of 14 runners nationwide invited to participate in the Adidas High School Dream Mile in New York City.

• St. Mary’s varsity volleyball team won its fifth consecutive OSAA/ Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All-State Competition at the 6A level with a team average GPA of 3.91.

Blues Meet Gold When Olympian Joan Benoit Samuelson took to the stage at this year’s Food for Thought Tuition Assistance Luncheon, her keynote address centered on the notion of there being no finish line in the race of life. There’s always another goal, another challenge, another victory waiting to be achieved.

St. Mary’s Academy’s student athletes embrace that notion, striving year after year to grow the Blues’ illustrious reputation.

In 2012, St. Mary’s added a 19th Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) state title to its long list of athletic achievements when the Blues won their first-ever state track and field championship. The Blues also garnered a second-place finish at the OSAA 6A State Cross Country Meet and took fifth at state in swimming, sixth in basketball and Nordic skiing and seventh in golf.

“As Joan Samuelson said, there is no last finish line in athletics. Still, the Blues crossed many finish lines first in 2012. It was a banner year for St. Mary’s athletic program, from a state track championship to strong finishes in a number of other sports. Students proved once again through their commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom that the Blues are a force to be reckoned with,” said St. Mary’s Academy Athletic Director Anna Maria Lopez ’78.

A number of students had the opportunity to hear Samuelson’s moving

Food for Thought speech about her groundbreaking experience winning the first-ever Olympic women’s marathon in 1984. After the luncheon, members of the track and cross country teams were able to join Samuelson in a run around downtown Portland.

It was inspiring to meet one of her role models, said Paige Rice ’14, who placed fifth at the 2012 state cross country meet and seventh at the Nike Cross Northwest Regional Cross Country Championships. Rice went on to finish 73rd out of 194 competitors at the national championships, and she was one of 14 runners nationwide invited to participate in the Adidas High School Dream Mile in New York City in June.

“Joan, with her notable victory in the first women's Olympic marathon, broke barriers that shocked the world. She was a leader in the fight for athletic equality and continues her remarkable career,” Rice said.

Samuelson wasn’t the only world-class athlete St. Mary’s students were privileged to meet in 2012. Olympic soccer star Tiffeny Milbrett spoke at the school’s celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX in May. For Blues soccer players such as Kathleen McIntyre ’13, it was a thrilling opportunity.

“It was really inspirational to have heard and met Tiffeny Milbrett at the Title IX event. She’s an amazing soccer player, and I share her passion for the game. It was an honor to meet her in person,” McIntyre said.

2012 Arts Highlights • Two St. Mary’s Academy students were finalists in the 2012 Mt. Hood Conference Acting Competition, and six received honorable mention.

• The Theatre Department presented ”Bye Bye Birdie” with a cast of 58 and a crew of more than 30 to rave reviews. The Theatre Department also presented ”10 Plays in 2 Days,” featuring 10 plays written, directed by and starring students over the course of two days.

• The Marian Singers travelled to Washington, D.C., in December to perform at the White House.

• Two St. Mary’s students were selected for the Oregon All-State Choir, and six were selected for the All-Northwest Honor Choir.

• The Marian Singers were selected to perform at the National Association for Music Education’s Northwest Division Conference.

• The Marians placed 11th in the OSAA 6A State Choir Championships. They placed first in the OSAA 6A Academic All-Stars Choir Competition with an average GPA of 3.71.

• A St. Mary’s student received a silver medal in the 2012 National Scholastic Art Awards.

• Forty pieces of artwork created by 14 St. Mary’s students were honored in the 2012 Portland Metro Scholastic Art Awards program.

• St. Mary’s students won second- and thirdplace statewide honors in Wildlife Forever’s State-Fish Art Contest.

The Marian Singers: Christmas at the White House Christmas came early for 47 students in St. Mary’s Academy’s elite Marian Singers.

On Dec. 19, the choir enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of singing in the White House.

The students performed Christmas music in the stunning Grand Foyer for visitors touring 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The invitation to perform at the White House was a great honor, said St. Mary’s Academy Director of Choral Music Kathy Briggs.

“I am so incredibly proud of them. It is a memory that will last their entire lives. I also feel that the Marians have really earned this. Along with excellent choral singing skills, it requires a high level of responsibility, dedication and professionalism to do what these young ladies do, and I am so happy that, as a result of their hard work, they are able to have opportunities such as this,” Briggs said.

The three-day trip to Washington, D.C., also included visits to several Smithsonian museums, the Kennedy Center and the Lincoln Memorial. It was made possible by a significant contribution from longtime supporters Mike and Tracey Clark, as well as other St. Mary’s donors.

“It’s definitely the most momentous experience of my life thus far,” said Charlotte Umanoff ’14. “The White House is something you always imagine. As a child, it seems almost like a fairy tale. When you get older, it becomes more real but feels inaccessible. It became very accessible to us on this trip, and that was such a privilege.”

Being at the White House during the festive holiday season made the experience even more special, said Makenzie Spiller ’13.

“It was like nothing I’ve ever experienced in my life. We’re so grateful for this opportunity,” she said.

2012 Service Hightlights • 86% of the student body is involved in optional community service.

• 57 graduates of the Class of 2012 earned service cords, signifying that they performed at least 160 hours of service.

• 20% of students comprised St. Mary’s Ambassador and LINK teams, helping to welcome prospective and new students through activities such as The Scoop, Center Stage @ SMA, SMA Science Challenge and Frosh Lock-In. • Five St. Mary’s students comprise the board of the nonprofit Youth Ending Slavery (YES), which was founded by Allison Nasson ’13 over the summer. In October, they organized a Walk to End Slavery that drew 300 people and raised $1,000 for Athena House, a local shelter for juvenile sex-trafficking victims.

• YES and St. Mary's Poverty Awareness Day program were awarded a $500 grant from the Wholistic Peace Institute at Concordia University. The grant accompanied the 2012 Harold Schnitzer Spirit of Unity Award.

• Eight St. Mary’s students and two alumnae spent spring break helping to rebuild houses in New Orleans.

• Four St. Mary’s students attended the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary Justice and Peace Youth Forum in Seattle in the fall. Activities included volunteering at a local food bank and at Treehouse for Kids, a nonprofit aimed at improving the lives of foster children.

• Students raised nearly $5,200 for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Camfed International, Macdonald Center and MamaBaby Haiti during Doernbecher Week.

• St. Mary’s students volunteered weekly at the Macdonald Center, St. Andre Café, the Boys & Girls Club and Providence Child Center.

• 163 ninth-graders, 35 student leaders and 35 adult chaperones immersed themselves in the lives of some of our poorest neighbors on the streets of Old Town to learn about homelessness and how to get involved with agencies serving the homeless population.

• St. Mary’s provided Christmas baskets filled with food and gifts to 26 families.

Maddy Miller ’13: A Commitment to Giving Back People often discuss giving back as something they need, have or want to do, but Maddy Miller ’13 sees things differently. For her, volunteering with youth at a local elementary school and a domestic violence shelter is something she gets to do.

“I feel privileged and honored that I get to work with the kids that I do because they’re some of the strongest people I’ve ever met,” she said.

Miller was recognized for her service efforts on Feb. 7 at the 12th Annual Heart of the Community Awards. Hands On Greater Portland and the Portland Trail Blazers presented her with the Nathan Sibell Youth Leadership Award at a ceremony at the Governor Hotel.

She was nominated for the award by Tim Schulze from Harrison Park School and PDX Summer School and Choya Adkison-Stevens from the YWCA of Greater Portland — both organizations where she regularly volunteers.

Miller met Schulze in 2011 while volunteering for PDX Summer School, a nonprofit he started to provide tutoring for low-income English language learners over summer break. Since then, she’s volunteered at Harrison Park, where he teaches fifth grade.

Twice a week during her free period,

Miller buses across town to help in Schulze’s classroom. Miller is nearly fluent in Spanish and uses her linguistic skills to coach English language learners.

After students are dismissed for the day, Miller stays at Harrison Park to work in the SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) School. There she provides homework help and leads athletic, music and craft activities.

“Maddy has an ability to engage students in a way that few can. She is able to connect with them and show them she cares in such a genuine way that kids quickly feel comfortable around her. Harrison Park and PDX Summer School are lucky to have such a committed, smart and compassionate person as Maddy to be a wonderful role model for our students,” Schulze said in his nomination.

Miller is equally committed to her work with the YWCA of Greater Portland’s Yolanda House, a shelter for survivors of domestic violence. She learned about the opportunity in a social justice class led by Maria Fleming ’83, student service coordinator and religion teacher at St. Mary’s.

Miller and her mother, Karla Wenzel, both completed the YWCA’s 36-hour Advocacy Training Program last summer. Since then, Miller has volunteered weekly at Yolanda House.

She plays with the kids and helps them with activities such as making friendship bracelets and painting their nails. She

also organizes the closet of donated clothing and has encouraged her St. Mary’s friends to give apparel to the shelter.

“Maddy’s incisive mind and caring heart are an immense asset to our community. She is making a significant difference in the lives of children at the shelter. Her analysis of systemic social issues is truly on point, and I know she will go far in her efforts and determination to (ensure) justice and well-being for all,” Adkison-Stevens wrote in her nomination.

Growing up, Miller saw the spirit of volunteerism modeled by her parents. She credits them with encouraging her community activism. Miller also gives credit to Fleming and the culture at St. Mary’s.

“I think that giving back is part of St. Mary’s. You can see that just by looking at all the students who, with everything on their plates, make it a priority. Volunteering is something that’s encouraged and loved and appreciated here,” she said.

Miller will attend college next fall, though she has not decided where yet. She plans to study political science and international relations. She hopes to go on to law school and eventually work to prevent and prosecute human-rights violations in conflict zones.

Whatever her future holds, Miller will continue to make a difference in the world, those who know her say.

“Maddy embodies the ideals of the Holy Names Sisters and their commitment to education and justice. She is a dynamic force in the classroom and clearly brings this energy to her volunteer work. She is a young woman of integrity,” Fleming said.

Barr has shown tireless dedication to ensuring that St. Mary’s continues to offer a top college-preparatory education grounded in its founding values.

“This woman is one whirlwind of energy!

Her leadership has been instrumental in maintaining and building on the St. Mary’s success story. Her enthusiasm is infectious and her dedication inspiring,” Salvi said.

Barr’s former students are just as effusive as her colleagues.

“Mrs. Barr was the perfect combination of teacher: She has an intense passion for all things literary and loves young people fiercely. In the year I spent as her student, Mrs. Barr made me work harder than I thought I was capable of working. She introduced me to the complicated and exciting task of literary analysis, and taught me to listen to my heart as I looked to my future.

From the moment Principal Pat Barr joined the St. Mary’s fold as an English teacher 18 years ago, she knew that she’d become part of a very special community rich in history and promise.

“I often told people in my beginning years that I had died and gone to educational heaven.

It is still true to this day. I just loved St. Mary’s from the moment I entered her doors,” Barr said.

Barr quickly distinguished herself as an instructor, inspiring students in English, speech and journalism classes. She also showcased her leadership abilities by helping to establish the successful Freshmen Integrated Program. Barr so impressed her colleagues and the school’s administrative team that she was tapped as principal in 2001.

This marks Barr’s final year at St. Mary’s, as she leaves to embark on new adventures.

Colleagues and students are grateful for all the gifts she has shared as a teacher and an administrator.

Linda Patrick ’67, SNJM, Assistant Principal of Student Life, and Sara Follen Salvi ’71, English Department Chair, started at the school the same year as Barr and enjoyed watching her career evolve.

I felt safe and appreciated as her student and as a member of her flock once she became principal,” said Ashley Whitty ’02.

Whitty, who credits Barr with inspiring her to become a teacher, now teaches seventh- and eighthgrade language arts at Nativity School.

“When I started thinking about my career path, she was one of the first people I called upon for advice. I know that being Mrs. Barr's student had a huge impact on who I am and how I live my life,” Whitty said.

Adelle Monteblanco ’03 feels privileged to have been part of Barr’s final Teacher Adviser group.

“Mrs. Barr is a model of responsibility, generosity and faith. Mrs. Barr devoted her professional life to the most important work of all — preparing the next generation of women with the tools to lead,” Monteblanco said.

Though she won’t be greeting students each morning in the front hall much longer, Barr and St. Mary’s will always remain connected.

“I leave St. Mary’s with an incredibly full heart.

I will not be far away and will continue supporting the school. I hope to be traveling with Bob, my loving husband of 40 years, and fulfilling my lifelong commitment always to be learning,” Barr said.

St. Mary’s wishes Barr all the best as she begins this next chapter and is so thankful for all she has given to the school throughout her tenure.

“It has been a privilege, honor and a delight to minister with this marvelous woman for 18 years.

I and hundreds of others — students, faculty and parents — are better people for having her be a part of our lives. She truly carries the spirit of Blessed Marie-Rose and the 12 founders deep in her bones,” Patrick said.

Gifts By Clicks Are On the Rise

Alumnae play a vital role in sustaining the unique and formative experiences that inspire young women for a lifetime. St. Mary’s is honored to have a strong, loyal and generous group of alumnae who support their school through gifts of time, talent and treasure. Nineteen percent of St. Mary’s alumnae showed their support by making a donation in 2011-2012 (July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012). We thank you for your participation.

Online giving is a convenient, environmentally friendly way to support St. Mary’s Academy. Since Julie Vaillancourt ’98 made the first online donation in 2006, gifts by clicks have increased nearly 1,400 percent.

St. Mary’s receives nearly half of its online gifts at the end of the calendar year in December and the end of the fiscal year in June.

Regardless of when the gifts come in, they make a significant difference in the lives of our 640 students.

In addition to the St. Mary’s Fund annual campaign, donors now have the opportunity to make online gifts for all of the school’s major fundraising events.

Alumnae Advancement Council St. Mary’s graduates often speak of the impact the school had on the women they became. They are eager to reconnect with the Blues community and to help ensure that today’s and tomorrow’s students have the same opportunity to experience the life-shaping journey St. Mary’s offers.

Marcy Moore Forman ’67 chairs the newly restructured St. Mary’s Academy Alumnae Advancement Council with supporting leadership from Felicita Monteblanco ’03 and Tifani Jones Parrilli ’82 and staff guidance from Coralynn Arrigotti ’83 and Lauren Neiheisel ’07. This leadership team is passionate about St. Mary’s and has proven effective in motivating a group of 24 already very busy volunteer council members to inspire increasing numbers of alumnae to engage in strengthening the school through greater involvement and tangible investment.

“Marcy’s approach is warm but unwavering, with her eye on the goal at all times,” said Arrigotti, Director of Alumnae Leadership Giving & Involvement.

This team’s goal is to accomplish measurable and meaningful increases in alumnae engagement each year. Their results-oriented approach is paying off. The council set a goal of securing 16 tables at the 2012 Food for Thought Tuition Assistance Luncheon, after having secured nine the previous year. The result was 18 tables.

Alumnae support is critical to the future of St. Mary’s. This leadership team embraces the challenge of reaching out to, communicating with and inspiring more alumnae to engage with their alma mater in ways that prove mutually beneficial and rewarding.

2012 DevelopmenT Highlights •The 2012 Tahitian Blue Auction raised nearly $800,000, the largest amount in the event’s 24-year history.

•The 2012 Food for Thought Tuition Assistance Luncheon welcomed more than 740 guests who collectively, along with event sponsors, gave more than $356,000 to help fulfill a $1.16 million commitment to financial aid for the 2012-2013 school year.

•St. Mary’s students raised a record-breaking $82,000-plus in support of the Blues Bridge Walk Student Fundraiser.

•Combined, the 2012 special fundraising events resulted in a nearly 7% increase over the last fiscal year.

•St. Mary’s celebrated the 40th anniversary of the passage of Title IX with a gala at the Tiger Woods Center at Nike. The event featured Olympian Tiffeny Milbrett, former Congresswoman Darlene Hooley and sportscaster Ann Schatz. It drew 270 attendees and raised more than $60,000 in support of the Buckman Field Project, which provides a home field for St. Mary’s soccer and lacrosse teams.

•Gifts to the St. Mary’s Fund, the school’s annual fundraising campaign, provide critical support to enrich the learning experience for each and every student.

More than 1,800 donors to the 2011-2012 St. Mary’s Fund provided $710,000 in vital support.

•The St. Mary’s Academy endowment was blessed with many generous gifts, resulting in a 2,304% increase over prior fiscal year contributions.

• In total, the 2012 fiscal year saw 26% growth in total contributions to the school.

T In Loving Memory The Honorable Philip T. Abraham (Oct. 22, 1928-Jan. 2, 2013) St. Mary’s Academy pays tribute to and mourns the loss of the late Honorable Philip T. Abraham. Along with his wife, Patti, Abraham was a steadfast supporter of St. Mary’s for the past four decades. The couple’s three daughters, Leslie Abraham Keller ’76, Lori Abraham Lane ’80 and Melissa Abraham Hartnell ’87, all attended St. Mary’s. In the years since their daughters graduated, the Abrahams remained an integral part of the St. Mary’s community.

“Judge Abraham has a long history with St. Mary’s Academy. He was very much a believer in the value of allfemale Catholic education, and he was willing to volunteer his time to assure that St. Mary’s would have the financial resources to provide an excellent education to a diverse population of students,” said St. Mary’s Academy President Christina Friedhoff.

“In the early ’70s, before the days of auctions and annual fund drives, he helped to organize and run bingo night to bring in extra money to help St. Mary’s. He was a positive, kind and engaging person who believed in the potential of each and every young woman. I always felt uplifted after I spent time with him. Integrity, faith, family and compassion — these are the words I think of when I think of Judge Abraham. The world lost a very special person.”
