ooking back on our 152-year history and our tradition of excellence, my thoughts turn to you, the wonderful friends and supporters of St. Mary’s Academy. I am grateful for the history we have inherited, the present we share and the future we anticipate together.

Throughout our history, our school has been blessed with many gifts. I am grateful for the strong women who built our school, to those who developed and grew our academic, spiritual and service initiatives into the outstanding programs they are now. Our work continues today and positions us for a limitless future, all the while grounding us in the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary’s vision of a college-preparatory education for young women.

St. Mary’s Academy is the institution it is today because of people such as you who, year after year, share your talents, give freely of your time, and generously donate to our school. Your commitment to our mission enabled many accomplishments to occur this past year, including one of our strongest fundraising years in the school’s history for annual support. Your many gifts are a testament to the deep love you have for St. Mary’s Academy, and it is this affection that fortifies us in our mission of educating today’s young women and tomorrow’s leaders.

As we stand on the brink of the next 152 years and beyond, we remember the foundation that has rooted us, and we are grateful for the support that enables our school to look to our future with a clear vision to continue providing exceptional opportunities for young women. eflecting on the 2010-2011 fiscal year, one word comes to mind: gratitude.

It’s difficult to know where to begin expressing our thanks to everyone who has given generously to the school, whether it’s through financial contributions or volunteerism.

Certainly all of you recognized in this publication, supporters of the mission carried out by St. Mary’s Academy, are a wonderful place to start. So to all of our generous donors, we offer our sincere thanks.

Upon further reflection on what an amazing gift a St. Mary’s education is, one can’t help but marvel at and, yes, thank the dedicated faculty and staff at St. Mary’s. They are the ones on the front line, the men and women delivering the school’s “product” so thoughtfully every day. That product, of course, is a first-rate, highest-caliber, whole-person education.

Students confidently leave St. Mary’s prepared not just for college, but for life.

Perhaps a “thank you” to the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary is in order, as well. St. Mary’s 12 SNJM founders embarked on a mission to educate young women 152 years ago, and that mission is being carried out to the highest degree here on Fifth Avenue today.

This publication is a way for us not only to thank all of our supporters, but also to share stories of how your gifts and involvement with the school are making a meaningful difference for students today and tomorrow. We want you to know that your gifts have both immediate and lasting impact.

A Family Legacy

or many members of the St. Mary’s Academy community, involvement with the school is a multi-generational tradition.

Many families have a history of supporting St. Mary’s through gifts of time, talent and treasure.

We are grateful for their loyal dedication to our mission and for their legacies of service and commitment to the school.

A Passion for Supporting Arts and Academics — Mike and Tracey Clark When their daughter was a student at St. Mary’s, Mike and Tracey Clark never missed a school concert or theatrical production.

Brittney Clark graduated in 1994, but the Clarks still treasure those memories, and the school is blessed that they remain an integral part of the St. Mary’s family.

“We’ll never forget watching Brittney solo in the opening numbers of ‘Growing Pains’ and ‘Huck Finn’ or seeing her ‘flying’ in ‘Peter Pan,’” said Tracey.

The Clarks have been faithful and generous St. Mary’s patrons since Brittney enrolled. She was undecided about what high school to attend until the family came to a St. Mary’s open house at a friend’s suggestion.

“After meeting the teachers and learning about the programs, we never looked back,” Mike said.

The Clarks have seen St. Mary’s grow and evolve in the years since. They have been there for the school through good times and bad as a constant source of unwavering support.

The Clarks said, “We are proud to support St. Mary’s Academy and the amazing young women who apply themselves to the rigorous academics, embrace the arts, accept the challenges of leadership and community service and strive to be champions in athletics.”

Philanthropy has always been an important part of the Clarks’ lives. This has included gifts of time such as Tracey’s service as Chair of the St. Mary’s Academy Board of Directors.

“Both Mike and I grew up where giving back to the community was a part of our lives. We’ve been blessed in our lives and continue to support organizations — like St. Mary’s — where we play an active role,” Tracey said. “Brittney has followed our example. Before she was old enough to hold a job, she spent her summers volunteering for the YWCA day camp and later helped with the Young People’s Theatre Project, where she is still involved as a member of their artistic staff.”

St. Mary’s special events are a welcome way for the Clarks to stay connected to the Blues community.

“We look forward to putting together a table and attending the annual auction each April,” Mike said. “It is a great opportunity to see familiar faces. What started out as one table is now two tables, with Brittney and her classmates rounding out the group.”

Hearing about the accomplishments of St. Mary’s students and faculty makes the Clarks proud to be supporters of the school.

“We enjoy reading of their achievements in the Imprint — increased enrollment and scholarship funding, student awards and national recognition. Moe Daschel being selected as Outstanding Classroom Teacher of the Year was long overdue. Kudos also to Kathy Briggs for getting so many more girls into choir, as well as being invited to the White House, and to the basketball team’s return to days of glory,” Tracey said. “We are pleased to see that St. Mary’s Academy is going strong after 152 years, and that the school continues to provide an exceptional education for today’s young women.”

Continuing a Legacy of Giving — Mary Mathews Stevens ’80 Sending their daughters to a Catholic, allfemale high school was a priority for Richard and Virginia Mathews, and they continued to support St. Mary’s long after their children, Mary Mathews Stevens ’80 and Molly Mathews Bjorklund ’85, had graduated.

The Mathews family's ongoing presence at St. Mary’s is evident, from the Richard and Virginia Mathews Gymnasium to the couple’s enthusiastic support for school events such as the annual auction.

“Dick and I always enjoyed going to the auction. We always had fun; we always had a good time. Dick loved to go. He loved to see everyone and talk to everyone. He didn’t know a stranger,” Virginia Mathews said.

When Richard Mathews died in August of 2011, his wife and daughters established the Richard H. Mathews Endowed Scholarship Fund to continue his legacy of support and admiration for St. Mary’s and his commitment to serving others. The scholarship fund helps make a St. Mary’s education possible for students who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

“It’s meaningful to me because my parents made a lot of sacrifices to send Molly and me there, so ultimately it’s to honor them. For my dad, St. Mary’s had a special place in his heart.

We felt very strongly that he would approve of it,” Stevens said.

In addition to supporting St. Mary’s through the family’s endowed fund, Stevens and her husband, Mark, have given generously to the school over the years.

“It’s always good to give back to the St. Mary’s community,” Stevens said.

Her St. Mary’s education helped set her on a path to be successful in college and in her career.

“I think that having the single-sex education kept me focused in the classroom,” Stevens said.

Virginia Mathews believed that to be the case from the moment she first set foot in the school.

She still remembers taking Stevens to St. Mary’s as a prospective student and being told by the teachers that the expectations would be high.

“They said, ‘You have to keep high standards all the time,’” Mathews said. “I always remembered that, and I thought that was a good thing to tell the girls. You have to do the best you can all the time.”

In addition to excellent academics, St. Mary’s offered Stevens a wealth of leadership development opportunities.

“The opportunity to take leadership roles in school and not have to worry about feeling self-conscious in front of boys and not feeling intimidated about participating in class lays a great foundation for any young woman to be able to take that forward in her career, advocate for

herself, stand up for herself and raise her hand in life,” Stevens said.

Her parents prioritized being involved with causes and organizations important to them.

Stevens and her husband have a daughter and twin boys, and she hopes to instill in her children the same giving spirit that her parents modeled for her.

“I think it’s great for kids to see that you give back to an institution or a community as a thank-you and as general support to continue the legacy and keep it going,” she said.

Faith, Family and Three Generations of St. Mary’s Alumnae — The Dieringers Over the past 70 years, three generations of Dieringer women have walked the halls of St. Mary’s Academy. The tradition began with Evelyn Wojcik Dieringer ’45 and continued with her daughters and granddaughters.

Evelyn’s husband, Bob, shared her commitment to and passion for Catholic education and St. Mary’s Academy.

“Our parents were both products of a Catholic education and upbringing, and they never lost their faith. It remained a strong component in their lives, so they remained strong believers in Catholic schools,” Gene Dieringer said.

After Evelyn and Bob Dieringer’s deaths, their children established The Bob & Evelyn Dieringer Family Fund to continue their parents’ legacy of giving.

“Mom and Dad had such great love and great passion in supporting all these causes. To fulfill their wishes is just tremendous. It’s exciting because you just know you’re continuing their work, continuing to let their spirit live and give life to others,” Pat Dieringer said.

Bob and Evelyn Dieringer demonstrated their commitment to Catholic education in both their financial support and their volunteer work.

Evelyn Dieringer served on St. Mary’s Board of Directors. She and Bob impressed upon their children the importance of giving back.

“They shared their time and talent, as well as their treasure. They really jumped in with both feet and participated,” Gene Dieringer said. “It’s that selfless generosity to others that makes the world a better place and, especially in these hard times, gives hope to those who witness it or are recipients of it.”

While the Dieringer brothers have a strong affinity for St. Mary’s, their six sisters, including Vicki Dieringer Ford ’69, experienced first-hand the excellent education and service and leadership foundation that the school provides.

“The academic standards were high, and my faith and my value of service and being of service to others were nurtured so strongly at St. Mary’s.

That’s why I am the way I am today and do the work that I do,” Ford said.

Like her mother, Ford remained actively involved with St. Mary’s after graduating. Both women served on the school’s Alumnae Council and were honored with Alumnae Academy Awards.

Ford sent her daughters, Tori Ford Vigil ’95 and Miki Ford Greenlee, M.D. ’97, to St. Mary’s, and she credits the school with instilling in them the potential for young women to make a difference in the world.

Greenlee, a pediatrician, agrees. “It prepared me for college and my future career and set that foundation, but it’s so much more than the academics. It’s the self-esteem and the selfconfidence and pushing yourself and also the lifelong friendships. I just can’t imagine what my life would have been like if I hadn’t gone to St. Mary’s,” she said.

Greenlee hopes to see more Dieringer women follow the tradition started by her grandmother.

“I have a son, who I love dearly, but I do hope to one day have a daughter and continue that legacy and send a fourth generation to St. Mary’s,” she said.

A Robust Endowment Means A Strong Future A guiding principle of good stewardship of our 152-year-old school is financial stability.

The future of St. Mary’s Academy is supported through our growing endowment and is the key to the innovation and flexibility that the next century will require of schools like St. Mary’s Academy.

The endowment is invested donations from which the school draws each year, at a rate designed to preserve capital and to supplement the operating income provided by tuition and gifts to the school.

The income provided by St. Mary’s endowment includes support for: • Tuition assistance • Academic programs and co-curricular activities • Attracting and retaining outstanding faculty • Maintenance and renewal of our historic campus • General financial stability during challenging times and the flexibility to respond to new opportunities A strong endowment equals choices for the future. Today, St. Mary’s endowed funds total more than $6 million, and we are pleased to report that the overall endowment fund reported an investment return of 21 percent for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011.

2011 Academic Highlights • 100% of the Class of 2011 graduated • 99% of the Class of 2011 proceeded to college • $8.4 million in merit-based scholarships were offered to the 129 graduates of 2011 • St. Mary’s Class of 2011 had five National Merit Scholarship Program Finalists • St. Mary’s Class of 2011 had 11 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Scholars • St. Mary’s Class of 2011 had one student qualify to be in the National Achievement Scholarship Program • 41% of 2011 graduates said they planned to pursue math or science as their field of study in college • More than half the Advanced Placement students earned scores of 4 or 5 on a 5-point scale • St. Mary’s won its fifth Science Olympiad State Championship • St. Mary’s students received writing honors including a national-level Scholastic Gold Key in the personal essay/memoir category and second place in the Kay Snow Awards Writing Contest, the Manningham Trust Student Poetry Contest and the Oregon State Poetry Association Contest • A St. Mary’s student was selected as one of two winners at the 21st annual Young Historians Conference at Portland State University

The Impact of your Gift

S

t. Mary’s Academy celebrated many accomplishments this past fiscal year. Your generosity enables us to excel in all areas of educating young women, including collegepreparatory academics, athletics, the arts, service and leadership development, and outstanding faculty. Your gifts enable our students to grow, achieve, aspire and make a difference now and for years to come.

Latin program provides exceptional linguistic foundation Students at St. Mary’s Academy are learning that Latin is anything but a dead language. In addition to Spanish and French, St. Mary’s is one of a very small number of schools in the Portland-metro area that offers Latin. The classes are taught by Michael Reinbold, a St. Mary’s Academy faculty member in his 14th year of service to the school.

Eighty St. Mary’s students take Latin, and they say the discipline this language requires has helped improve their vocabulary, grammar and overall understanding of how languages are structured. They say it helps boost their SAT writing and critical reading scores and, especially for those who plan to pursue careers in fields such as law, medicine and science, that it will help them in their college studies and beyond.

“Latin is the heart and soul of Western language and Western civilization,” Reinbold said. “In learning Latin, a student learns who she is and how she came to be. She learns both

heritage and structure that will propel her forward into understanding, understanding that will change her perception of herself, her society and the very structure of the language she speaks today.”

St. Mary’s offers four years of Latin. During the fourth year, an Advanced Placement course, students translate Virgil’s The Aeneid. Beginning next year, AP students also will translate selected works by Julius Caesar.

St. Mary’s Latin program places a strong emphasis on culture and history, and every other year, students have the opportunity to travel to Italy or Greece to experience first-hand what they’ve been learning about in lectures and books.

During spring break 2011, a group of 52 students and parent and faculty chaperones spent 10 days in Southern Italy and on the islands of Sicily and Capri. They visited Rome, Vatican City, Pompeii, Palermo and Syracuse, where they saw the tomb of the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes. They also saw Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe.

“It’s just mind-blowing to connect the pieces of what you learn in the classroom with real life,” said Ellena Basada ’12.

These trips aren’t the only way that St. Mary’s students have fun while juxtaposing the past with the present in their Latin studies. Some years Reinbold has had students work from a Latin translation of a Harry Potter book in class.

“It is great fun, and the students love it,” Reinbold said. “Most of the spells that are used in the series are semi-Latin. It’s fun to see just how the author put them together. There is nothing like the aura of the past smacking into the reality of the present.”

2011 Athletic Highlights • The renovation of Buckman Field was completed, giving St. Mary’s soccer and lacrosse teams a home advantage • Paige Rice ’14 won the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) 6A State Cross-Country individual title; finished second in the 1,500-meter race at the OSAA 6A State Track Meet; competed in the Nike Cross Nationals; and was named 2011 Mt. Hood Conference (MHC) Cross-Country Female Athlete of the Year

recently, Paige Rice ’14, who last fall became the first St. Mary’s athlete to win an individual state cross-country championship title.

When Mike Bojorquez first came to St. Mary’s Academy to coach cross country and track, he thought he’d stay for a year. Eighteen years later, Bojorquez is still part of the St. Mary’s family and has helped the school develop one of the strongest running programs in the state.

St. Mary’s cross-country team hasn’t lost a dual meet since joining the Mt. Hood Conference (MHC) during the 2002-2003 school year, and boasts a record of 76-0.

• The cross-country team finished fifth at the OSAA 6A State Cross-Country Meet and won its 10th consecutive MHC title

It’s a love of the sport and an appreciation for the talented, hardworking student athletes that have kept Bojorquez at St. Mary’s.

• The 1,600-meter relay team finished second overall at the OSAA 6A State Track Meet

“The dedication and the hard work ethic of the girls keep me going,” he said.

• The basketball team placed fourth in the OSAA 6A State Girl’s Basketball Championships • Ellena Basada ’12 was named 2011 MHC Female Swimmer of the Year • The swim team finished fifth at the OSAA 6A State Swim Meet • In alpine skiing, St. Mary’s finished second in the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association’s Freestyle Skiing State Championship • In tennis, Katy Krauel ’11 won her fourth consecutive MHC district title (2008-2010 in singles and 2011 in doubles paired with Sierra Lemon ’14); Krauel and Lemon finished fourth at the 2011 OSAA 6A State Tennis Tournament; and the school tied for sixth overall at state • St. Mary’s golf team won its fifth consecutive MHC title and 18th league crown overall, and finished ninth in the team standings at the OSAA 6A State Golf Tournament • Lauren Fischer ’11 was the individual champion at the MHC District Golf Tournament • St. Mary’s volleyball team won its fourth consecutive OSAA/Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All-State Competition among all 6A volleyball teams with a team average GPA of 3.90 8

Mike Bojorquez: Bringing Out the Best in Student Athletes

Bojorquez knows first-hand what it takes to be a top runner. He began running around age 8, and saw success as part of Portland State University’s track and cross-country teams and in a number of races post-college.

He began as assistant track and cross-country coach at St. Mary’s in 1994 and a few years later became head coach. He also serves as the school’s athletic project coordinator.

Since Bojorquez joined the staff at St. Mary’s Academy, the school’s track and cross-country teams have gained widespread recognition. The cross-country team took first place at the state championships in 1997 and earned second place in 2003, 2007 and 2008. Also in 2007, the crosscountry team took first place at the regional meet and went on to place 10th at nationals.

In addition to team triumphs, Bojorquez has coached a number of individuals to victory, including Annette Mosey ’00, Emily Charbonneau ’02, Margaret Frank ’03, Kate Lilley ’04, Brooke Palmer ’05, Anne MurphyHagan ’06, Alexandra Jones ’09 and, most

Bojorquez has been named MHC Coach of the Year for cross country eight times in the past 10 years. He was named MHC Coach of the Year in track in 2008, and Metro League Coach of the Year for cross country in 2000.

Other coaches ask Bojorquez what his secret is for bringing out the best in his runners, but he says there is no magic formula.

“It’s just being out there, working with the kids every day, being a good communicator and making it fun for the kids,” he said.

With a current roster of talented runners and some promising middle-schoolers who have expressed interest in attending St. Mary’s, Bojorquez expects the school’s tradition of running excellence to continue for years to come.

“The future looks strong,” he said.

St. Mary’s Theatre Students Shine On Stage and Behind the Scenes As students active with the Theatre Department at St. Mary’s Academy know, there’s more than one way to be a star. Whether it’s acting on stage or putting their creative talents to use behind the scenes, St. Mary’s students are enjoying success in the theatre world.

St. Mary’s Academy juniors Nan Campbell and Claire Martin were finalists in the 2012 Mt. Hood Conference Acting Competition. The duo performed a scene from Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” and finished in the top 10 percent.

“We had a lot of fun with it,” Campbell said.

The characters they portrayed, Celia and Rosalind, are best friends, making it easy for the real-life best friends to infuse their scene with authenticity.

“It really feels natural to us,” Martin said.

At last year’s competition, Campbell and Martin received an honorable mention in the duo category, finishing in the top 20 percent.

This year, three pairs of St. Mary’s students earned that distinction. They are seniors Anna Klos and Sarah Carey, senior Marian Hill and sophomore Ali Peterkort and seniors Hollie Dyer and Karina Mena.

“I am so proud of these students. It speaks highly of their skill and dedication that they were able to perform so well at this event. Much deserved congratulations to them,” said St. Mary’s Academy Theatre Director Shannon More.

Actors may get more of the spotlight, but St. Mary’s also recognizes the technical theatre students who work behind the scenes to help make the school’s plays and musicals possible,

doing everything from stage managing to sound to set construction to hair and makeup.

“Even though our ‘techies’ do not get to take a bow after each show, they are essential to each and every production,” More said.

Among those passionate about technical theatre is senior Lauren Wack. She discovered her love of stage lighting and other technical aspects of theatre while working on the St. Mary’s production of “Thoroughly Modern Mille” during her sophomore year.

“It just instantly made me happy,” said Wack, stage manager for St. Mary’s upcoming production of “Bye Bye Birdie.”

Thanks to her experience working in the Theatre Department at St. Mary’s, Wack was able to land a paid internship with the Broadway Rose Theatre Company last summer. Over winter break, she did lighting for the Portland Center for the Performing Arts’ production of “The Wizard of Oz.” Wack will attend Sarah Lawrence College in New York next fall, where she plans to study technical theatre.

“Lauren has taken advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow in her craft, and she has become a very competent theatrical technician not just at St. Mary’s but in the theatrical community. I know she will be successful in her future theatre endeavors,” More said.

2011 Service Hightlights • 86% of the student body is involved in non-mandatory community service • 30 graduates of the Class of 2011 earned service cords, signifying that they performed at least 160 hours of service • Nearly one-third of students perform at least 100 hours of community service per year • 177 ninth-graders, 32 student leaders and 36 adult chaperones immersed themselves in the life of some of our poorest neighbors on the streets of Old Town to learn about homelessness • Eight students performed service projects in Latin America as part of the Amigos de las Americas program

A Commitment to Giving Back Though about 40 hours of service are built into the curriculum at St. Mary’s Academy, service outside of class is not a requirement. That makes it even more meaningful that 86 percent of St. Mary’s students choose to do voluntary community service.

Nearly one-third of students perform more than 100 hours of community service each year, working on behalf of others and developing as ethical and responsible leaders.

“The desire to help others, to make the world a better place for others, especially the most fragile and vulnerable in our local and global communities, to take care of the Earth and to work for justice comes from deep in our hearts,” said Assistant Principal of Student Life Linda Patrick, SNJM ’67.

“The adolescent heart is often at a critical stage of readiness to respond to the needs of others. At St. Mary’s, we follow the example of Jesus, who speaks to our hearts and invites us to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to give

drink to the thirsty,” Patrick said.

The school remains true to the spirit of service in allowing students to choose where to devote their time and energy. Popular places for students to volunteer include the Macdonald Center, Downtown Chapel, L’Arche Portland and Blanchet House.

“The spirit of the Holy Names Sisters is alive at St. Mary’s,” said Maria Fleming ’83, student service coordinator for St. Mary’s. “I have never experienced a school community so dedicated to making the world a better place.”

This spirit of giving was on full display during the recent holidays. Working through St. Vincent de Paul, St. Mary’s students, parents, faculty and staff provided Christmas baskets filled with food and gifts for 36 families.

Among those taking the baskets to grateful recipients was St. Mary’s junior Shelby Wells.

Seeing a single mother’s Christmas tree go from bare to lined with gifts for her three children was a moving experience for Wells.

“That’s the best gift anyone could have given me, just the opportunity to do that,” Wells said.

The Christmas baskets are just one example of how St. Mary’s students embraced the true meaning of the holidays. The St. Mary’s community also worked with JOIN to provide mops, toasters, dishes and other essentials for formerly homeless people through a school giving tree, and a number of students sang carols and served festive meals at local facilities that provide services for those in need.

Mara Bower-Leo ’14 was one of about 40 St. Mary’s students who served a holiday meal and caroled for Northwest Pilot Project clients.

Northwest Pilot Project serves seniors who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

“Seeing all these people who don’t have the same things you have in life makes you grateful for what you have,” Bower-Leo said. “It really makes you feel great inside to give to these people and see how happy they are in return. Giving is one of my favorite things to do just because you can see the joy on people’s faces. I look forward to doing more service projects at St. Mary’s in the future.”

That sentiment is echoed by the St. Mary’s community at large.

“The opportunity to give is a privilege and responsibility that we want our students to embrace,” Fleming said. “St. Mary’s wants our students to be leaders, leaders today and in the future, leaders in their homes, communities and in the world. We want them to be the kind of leaders who consider everyone, including those who are marginalized and disadvantaged. Service projects help our students take responsibility for helping others.”

From Mentor and Mentee to Coworkers: Patty Gorman and Maria Fleming ’83 Maria Fleming ’83 never had Patty Gorman as a teacher, but she still felt the longtime St. Mary’s Academy faculty member’s influence during her high-school years and beyond.

Gorman, currently in her 34th year of service to St. Mary’s, was the campus minister when Fleming attended the school in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Fleming recalls working on service and social-justice projects with Gorman. They ranged from protesting the nuclear arms race to handing out government-subsidized cheese and butter to those in need.

“It was putting your beliefs into action,” said Gorman, who has been the Religion Department’s team leader for 30 years.

After high school, Fleming studied Spanish during her undergraduate years at Santa Clara University and earned both a Master of Divinity degree from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Education degree as a reading specialist from Concordia University. She joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, where Gorman has served on the board, was an adjunct scripture instructor at the University of Portland, was a pastoral associate at St. Andrew Catholic Church and taught at two local schools before returning to St. Mary’s as a faculty member in the fall of 2011.

Even before Fleming joined St. Mary’s faculty roster as a religion teacher and student service coordinator, she kept in touch with Gorman and viewed her as a mentor.

“It is a struggle to be a woman of justice in this world,” Fleming said. “When things are hard in my faith life or in my professional life, she comes to mind. She’s been this source of strength. This is a person who is really committed to service and helping people get involved in social justice at high school and post college and put their faith into practice.”

Gorman was thrilled to see Fleming return to St. Mary’s. Her wide range of academic, faith and life experiences makes her a “Renaissance woman” and a valuable addition to the department, she said.

“This is kind of what you hope when you’re a teacher,” Gorman said. “We planted seeds here at St. Mary’s, she did a zillion things to help grow them, and now she has come back.”

2011 DevelopmenT Highlights • St. Mary’s Academy’s Board of Directors won the 2011 Outstanding Board Award from the National Catholic Education Association • St. Mary’s fundraising activities resulted in a 15% increase in overall contributions over the previous year, including nearly an 18% growth in gifts to the St. Mary’s Annual Fund Campaign • The 2011 Food for Thought Tuition Assistance Luncheon welcomed 750 guests and sponsors who collectively gave more than $373,000, the secondhighest revenue in the event’s 18-year history, to help fulfill a $1.1 million commitment to financial aid for the 2011-2012 school year • The 2011 Royal Blue Auction celebrated the secondhighest revenue in the event’s 23-year history and earned more than $705,000 in gross revenue • St. Mary’s students raised more than $74,000 for the Blues Bridge Walk Student Fundraiser — exceeding the fundraising goal for the third year in a row • Five donors funded new endowed and annual scholarships in the past six months, providing more than $640,000 to be invested in the school’s endowment and nearly $45,000 in annual tuition assistance for students
