PUBLICATION RESEARCH

BRIEF I decided to do the publication concerning the theme of sexism and women objectification in the media. I chose this subject, because I believe the media have an enormous impact on society, and I would like to make the reader aware of the way the media treats women. To write this publication I did a profound research concerning sexism in pop culture in the first semester. During this semester, through photography, articles and graphics I tried to express my opinion and my observations regarding the subject. I am a feminist and I do not agree with the world we live in. After years of being feeding by the media of an unfair women image through films, advertising, music, magazines etc. I found the publication a perfect space to present in a visual way all the things that irritate me and make me think that being a woman is bad luck.

That would not be a bad luck if there was no discrimination. But it exists, and we can see this everywhere. Those days thanks to feminist movements the situation is improving. Unfortunately we will not be able to fight sexism if the media will continue to promote images of women they promote. The difference in men representation and women representation is huge. Media focuses too much on the female body and what results in girls giving too much attention to their appearance and boys thinking that girls are just sexual objects. Of course, I do not talk about everyone, but this concerns a significant part of the society. I also think there is a huge difference between talking about healthy sex where two people respect each other and presenting a woman as a man’s toy. As a woman I want to be respected. I do not want to be objectified and sexualizaed.

to enjoy being a woman we must change the world we live in.

MANIFESTO

I do the publication concerning the theme of sexism: BECAUSE we should be treated equally regardless of our gender. BECAUSE women in the media should not be objectified and sexualized. BECAUSE women have right to dress up in any way they want. BECAUSE women have right to do whatever they want without thinking whether this is suitable for a woman or not. BECAUSE I want to say stop to gender stereotypes presented in the media. BECAUSE assigning gender roles is not fine. BECASUE saying ”You’re good for a girl” should not take place. BECAUSE women are not objects of male gaze. BECAUSE in the media there should be less attention put on women’s appearance and body. BECAUSE being a girl does not mean to be worse, weaker, less important.

COVER & WELCOME PAGE

I experimented with many layouts of cover page and welcome page. The versions that I decided to keep are in my opinion the most interesting and fit into the contemporary aesthetics. I decided to choose ”G GANG” title for my publication, which is an abbreviation of ”GIRLS GANG”, because its aim is to build a group of strong girls fighting for equality and the right representation of women. ”GANG” sounds pretty rebel. It suits my publication as I represent a nonconformist attitude and try to explain the absurd of certain things the society seems to neglect or ignore.

INTRODUCTION On the welcome page I decided to write an introduction in which I present what the publication is about and why I decided to touch the problem of sexism and objectification of women in the media. To write this introduction I chose quite a direct language. I want to keep this kind of tone through the entire publication. I decided to make crucial sentences thicker, so that even a quick look would be enough to find out what the publication is about.

LOOK AT MINDS, NOT AT PANTS

The quote that I put on the following pages express well the message of my publication. ”Look at minds, not at pants”. This is exactly what I want to say. In my publication I want to fight stereotypical thinking about women. I want to show that we should pay attention to someone’s personality and individuality and not to attribute certain traits to a particular person, because of their gender.

LAYOUT IDEAS

PHOTOSHOOT 1

The first photoshoot layout I wanted to keep simple, but not boring. I had many ideas for page layouts. Certain of them are presented below.

FINAL LAYOUT

Final layout is simple but contains a bit of colour. I think the layout suits the aesthetics of the photoshoot. Green and red colours are pretty subdued, what maintains a photoshoot in effortless and calm aesthetics.

ARTICLE ’’ I AM FED UP ’’

In this article I decided to touch the issue of the objectification and hypersexualization of women in rap/ hip hop music industry. I really like this kind of music and I am really fed up of listening to sexist lyrics and watching videos where women are presented as a piece of meat. I cannot understend why almost every famous female rapper must be a stripper at the same time. Or even if, why it does not concern male rappers.

I think the final layout that I chose for the article ”I AM FED UP” is the most original in comparison with the ones that I rejected. The growing size of the font I used to write the title expresses very well the attitude of being fed up and anger.

LAYOUT IDEAS

PHOTOSHOOT 2

I wanted to use a „Barbie font” to give an exaggerated aesthetics.

I am not your Barbie girl

I am not your Barbie girl

I am Not A PRODUCT

s a e m f o k n i Th ll ’ u o y e i b r a B the never get to play with

YOU WON’T s a e m f o k n i Th ll ’ u o y e i b r a B the never get to play with

OWN ME

s a e m f o k n i Th ll ’ u o y e i b r a B the never get to play with

YOU WON’T

OWN ME

However, after a consultation I was given advice to not present it in „Barbie aesthetics” and change the pages to make them look more contemporary. I took the pieces of advice into consideration. Below I present my further layout experimentations.

FINAL LAYOUT

The inal layout is completely different from its initial versions. I completely rejected Barbie aesthetics and tried to achieve more contemporary aesthetics. On the second page I used a text from a popular pop song of Ava Max - Not Your Barbie Girl. The other slogans that I wrote aim to address the issue of treating a woman as an entertainment.

ARTICLE ’’ WOMEN PAY OFF ’’

In this article I am writing about beauty industry and how it earns millions on women. I am writing about the unhealthy beauty standards and expectations imposed on women by the society and spreaded by the media. I am writing about a sick phenomena according to which men are handsome as they are, while women must cover their real faces. The photo that I put next to the articles symbolises a young woman with complexes.

COLLAGE

Through the collages I designed. I tried to show the absurd of makeup.

Finally I decided to change my idea a bit. I designed a collage, that presents parts of female body. This is a reference to plastic surgeries, beauty treatments and cosmetics. Things women can buy to approach to the beauty standards.

FINAL LAYOUT

Final layout is quite minimalist. I used Old English Text font which in my opinion goes very well with the photoshoot which shows rappers’ style. The slogans that I wrote aims to show what kind of image of a female rapper the media should promote.

FINAL LAYOUT

The final layout is rather minimalist. It is maintained in black&white. I think it adds strengh to the photos. The Only Body and later Nobody slogans are relevant to the theme of this photoshoot, that talks about focusing too much on women’s bodies. Rupi Kaur’s poem and other pages with text also concern this theme.

FINAL LAYOUT

The final layout is maintained in four main colours: pink, black, white and gold. For this photoshoot I decided to create not that simple layout as its message is to demonstrate in a caricatured and exaggerated way the phenomena of makeup. The slogans that I wrote aim to the dark side of the beauty industry.

FINAL LAYOUT

The final layout is really minimalist. I wanted to maintain this photoshoot in this kind of aesthetics to let the reader to focus on photos, that present rather maximalist stylings. I just decided to put ” Judgemental ” on he first page and ”Don’t judge me the way I’m dressed” that are related to the concept of the photoshoot. Later I placed slogans like ”Wanna know me? It takes time” and ”I don’t dress for a man, I dress for myself” that are related to the theme.
