Jonas Lied’s

Private photoalbum Showing the work of the The Siberian Steamship, Manufacturing & Trading Company on the Jenisei River The Norwegian businessman Jonas Lied (1881-1969) spent the years before and during WWI to establish a north trade route between Western Europe and Central Asia, via the Kara Sea and the rivers of Jenisej and Ob. In 1912, with support from the English businessman Alfred E. Derry and and with Norwegian, British and Russian capital, he founded The Siberian Steamship, Manufacturing & Trading Company Ltd. Lied became director of the company and established a main office in the town of Krasnojarsk in Siberia. The plan was to extract raw materials from Siberia and Mongolia and trade with Western Europe. Due to the ice, the first expedition did not succeed. In 1913 Fridtjof Nansen was invited to go with him on the steamer Correct from Tromsø to the mouth of Jenisej. They succeded and the support of Nansen lead to a very good start for the Siberian Company both in Russia and Europe.
