The past 24 months have been challenging for all of us, and I would like to take this time to acknowledge the hard work and resilience of our Maroondah community. We look forward to 2022 being a better year, as we strive to return to a more normal life and take the opportunity to get out and enjoy more of our community events and activities. We were delighted that the first event of the year, our Australia Day celebrations at Ringwood Lake Park, was able to be attended by so many residents of all ages. It was a fantastic day and we were glad that as a community, we could reflect, respect and celebrate what makes our community so special. It was an honour to present the Maroondah Australia Day awards to outstanding citizens and events in our community. I also had the pleasure of declaring 57 Maroondah residents as Australian citizens at our citizenship ceremony on the Sound Shell stage. February marked the long-awaited return of the Karralyka theatre season. We also launched new art exhibitions at Realm, Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery and Wyreena Community Arts Centre.

With the ongoing mental health impact of the pandemic, February saw a range of wonderful free and ticketed events on managing stress and anxiety, organised through our Be Kind Maroondah initiative. Visit the What’s On page on our website for details on our next Be Kind events. March sees applications open for Council’s Maroondah Community and Arts and Cultural Grants funding programs for 2022/23. Eligible, not-for-profit community groups can apply for funding for development projects and small equipment purchases that will benefit the community. And with Easter on the horizon, Council’s Vacation Care Program is packed full of fun and engaging activities for primary school aged children. In other exciting news, many of our major projects and community facility updates are ready to be opened in the coming months, such as the HE Parker Scout Hall in Heathmont, the new Proclamation Park pavilion in Ringwood and the new Dorset Recreation Reserve multipurpose community sports hub and soccer grounds in Croydon. We look forward to welcoming you back into our facilities and events across Maroondah.

Maroondah honours its top citizens on Australia Day Maroondah’s most inspirational community members were honoured at an Australia Day event held at Ringwood Lake Park on Wednesday 26 January. Councillor Mike Symon, Mayor of Maroondah, announced the winners of the 2022 Citizen of the Year Award to Terri Verberne, Young Citizen of the Year Award to Lily Van Sui Cer Kingbawl, and Community Event of the Year Award to the Ringwood Eisteddfod during a special awards ceremony, where 57 people also received their Australian citizenship. Terri Verberne was recognised as the 2022 Citizen of the Year for her incredible service, leadership and volunteering in the community. “I’m very grateful for this award. Most of us don’t volunteer with any expectation of formal recognition. To be named Citizen of the Year is a great honour and I proudly accept the

award on behalf of all of those who volunteer with Scouting and Lawn Bowls in the Maroondah community,” Terri said. Lily Van Sui Cer Kingbawl was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for her passion and commitment to supporting the broader Maroondah community. “I love being able to connect with people and learn different perspectives from different groups of people,” Lily said. “I also want to encourage young people to get out of their comfort zone and connect with their wider communities. There are so many things we can do to make our community safe and better.” The Ringwood Eisteddfod was one of the very few community competition

events able to take place in 2021. With a large span of awards in performing arts as well as music, the Eisteddfod provided the opportunity for over 700 community members to participate. “Receiving the Australia Day Award certainly was a boost to the Eisteddfod team and they are exceedingly grateful to the Maroondah Mayor, Councillors, CEO and employees for making such a magical event possible,” Eisteddfod president, Bernie Capicchiano, said. Congratulations to all our deserving recipients and nominees. Nominations are now open for the 2023 Awards. Visit www.maroondah.vic.gov.au for details.

Bill Wilkins Volunteer Award: Shine a light on a community volunteer Nominations for the prestigious Bill Wilkins Volunteer Award are now open. Members of the community are invited to nominate a worthy individual to be recognised for the contribution they have made to Maroondah. Now in its fourth year, the Bill Wilkins Volunteer Award is presented annually in recognition of the volunteers who inspire and embody the spirit of volunteerism through their exemplary contribution to the community. Nominations can be made up until November. The award will be presented at this year’s Volunteer Recognition Function, to be held in December. The award is named in honour of Bill Wilkins OAM in recognition of his 75 years of volunteering in Maroondah.

In 1994, Mr Wilkins became an Honorary Freeman of the City—the highest honour a council can bestow upon an individual. In 2021, Pamela Catling became the third person to receive the Bill Wilkins Volunteer Award in recognition of her 27 years of volunteering and love of indigenous and local native bushland in Maroondah. For further information on the application process and the award, visit Council’s website, or contact Council’s Volunteers and Placements Coordinator on 1300 88 22 33.

COVID-19 update Vaccinations

COVID-19 testing

Choosing to get vaccinated against COVID-19 will help keep you, your family and community safe. However, having a COVID-19 vaccination is a personal choice. It is important to talk to your doctor about your situation and any existing medical conditions to find out if vaccination is suitable for you.

When should I get a rapid antigen test? • Most people should get a rapid antigen test as their first option, particularly if you have symptoms or you are a contact of someone who has COVID-19.

For more information on getting vaccinated including locations, eligibility, how to prepare and what to expect, visit the Department of Health website at www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au

Vaccinations for COVID-19 are available for children aged 5 to 11 years. Children will receive two doses of the vaccine, eight weeks apart. The children’s dose is one third of the dose for people aged 12 years and over. Children will be able to receive vaccinations through GPs, state-run clinics, pharmacies, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and Commonwealth Vaccination Centres. You can find a local vaccine provider and book in for an appointment using the Vaccine Clinic Finder, covid-vaccine. healthdirect.gov.au/booking

‘Checking in’ is a simple step we can all take to protect our businesses, communities and each other. The Victorian Government is asking everyone to download the Service Victoria app, link your digital vaccination certificate, and to check in when visiting supermarkets, shops, cafes, businesses, community venues, places of worship and workplaces—regardless of how long you spend at the venue.

• If you have symptoms or you are a household or household-like contact who must get tested, and you can’t access a rapid antigen test, you can get a PCR test. • You can use a rapid antigen test if you want to quickly check if you may have COVID-19, for example, before attending a crowded event, social gathering or visiting vulnerable people. • Rapid antigen tests may be used as part of an established surveillance program such as one organised by your school or employer. Rapid antigen tests are quick and highly accurate. There are different types of rapid antigen self-tests that can be used at home. Follow the instructions in your kit, as they may differ from other types of tests. If you test positive on a rapid antigen test, you are a case and you must follow your checklist and report your result. When should I get a standard PCR test?

You can download the latest version of the Service Victoria app onto your smartphone from the App Store or Google Play. You can link your digital vaccination certificate using the step-by-step instructions on the coronavirus website, www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au

• If you have symptoms or you are a contact of someone who has COVID-19, and you can’t access a rapid antigen test, you can get a PCR test. • If you do not have symptoms and you are not a contact, and you test positive on a rapid antigen test, we recommend you get a PCR test to confirm that result. We do not recommend this if you have symptoms or you are a contact. • If required for other reasons and you have been directly advised. Further information is available at www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/ rapid-antigen-tests

Have you booked your booster? The Victorian Government has reduced the interval before receiving your third COVID-19 vaccine dose to three months, in accordance with recommendations from Victoria’s public health team. If you’re over 18 and have received your second COVID-19 vaccine at least three months ago, you are now eligible for your third dose. Use the table to check when your third dose is due.

Pet registration renewals due in April Maroondah pet owners are reminded that pet registration renewal notices will arrive during March, for payment by 10 April 2022.

Cleaning up after your dog Leaving messes isn’t just unsightly, it’s unsanitary. Dog owners are encouraged to show courtesy for their fellow community members by picking up after their pet. Dog droppings contain harmful bacteria, and this can end up in our local waterways via the stormwater system. If you’ve recently welcomed a new furry member to the family, don’t forget that you need to have them microchipped and registered with Council. Registration is an important part of responsible pet ownership and helps to keep track of your pet. All dogs and cats must be registered and microchipped by the age of three months. Microchipping provides an extra level of protection should your pet’s collar become detached, and greatly improves the chances of your pet being returned to you if they become lost. It is also a requirement that your pet wears its Council-issued registration tag at all times. The tags are lifelong and are

Did you know?

therefore not re-issued when you renew your registration. There are many payment options available, and owners registering their pet for the first time can do so online, or in person at one of Council’s service centres. You can either register to receive emails or create an account to manage and access your registration renewals at any time. To find out more, contact Council’s Local Laws team on 1300 88 22 33 or visit Council’s website. Need a new tag? Replacement tags are available free of charge by calling 1300 88 22 33 or visiting any of our customer service centres.

You can receive a discount on your dog or cat’s registration fee if your pet is de-sexed.

It’s recommended to carry appropriate receptacles, such as a bag, pouch or pooper-scooper, to remove and dispose of any waste when out walking your dog.

On and off-leash areas When out in a public place, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, except in areas that are marked off-leash. There are off-leash areas in Maroondah where you can exercise your dog, including Eastfield Dog Park, which is fully-fenced and has a time-out zone for young, quieter dogs. When exercising your dog in an off-leash area, it’s important to be aware of the particular place’s off-leash rules, such as the need to stay 15 metres from playgrounds and picnic facilities. Dogs must always be kept on a lead while on shared pathways.

Preparing our pets for a return to the office Our animals have no doubt proven to be the ultimate companions while working from home. With many people planning to return to the workplace after months spent working remotely, our sudden absence can lead to stress and separation anxiety. So, before you grab your workbag and jump back into old routines, take some time to transition your pet to living without you during the workday. Separation anxiety and stress can often manifest itself through destructive behaviour, such as excessive barking or yelping, chewing, digging, escaping, pacing or clawing at doors.

The RSPCA recommends: • Acting out your departure cues such as grabbing your keys, wallet, heading for the door and then sitting back on the couch. This will decrease your dog’s sensitivity to you leaving. • Gradually increase time spent alone such as leaving the house for a couple of minutes to a couple of hours. Your pet will start to realise that it’s okay to be alone. • Find an exercise routine that suits you and your pet, keeping in mind how you can still implement it when you return to work.

The idea of returning to workplaces minus our furry friends can be anxiety-inducing, especially for our four-legged companions.

Also, long-lasting treat toys can be great enrichment and help promote the idea that time alone can be fun. For more helpful tips, visit the RSPCA website at www.rspca.org.au

So, I’m very pleased to see Council is participating in a feasibility study to discover more about reusable nappies. Maroondah is one of 11 councils leading the charge in researching how we can reduce our impact, as over two billion disposable nappies end up in landfill each year in Australia. We have just closed the first round of consultation which will help us to better understand how we can support residents to make more environmentally-friendly choices. Thank you to everybody who shared their opinion on this important topic. The project team is busy analysing the data, and I am looking forward to the outcomes and next steps for this fantastic initiative.

Months in the planning, the new multipurpose community and sports hub was pre-built, transported to Croydon and erected onsite in February. This style of construction minimises the impact onsite for both users and surrounding residents, and means we have a brand-new facility ready to use in a much quicker timeframe. Final works to fit out the pavilion are now underway and are expected to be completed by the middle of this year. I am very excited to see Croydon City Soccer Club and our Burmese/Myanmar community making this new space their home. You can follow the progress of the sports and community hub on the project page on Council’s website.

In the Jubilee Ward is Ringwood Golf – a beautifully maintained 18-hole course that suits both beginners and experienced golfers. Over the past few months, we have undertaken improvement works to the pathways making them even more accessible for our new fleet of golf carts. I am looking forward to seeing some new and familiar faces at the EastLink Community Golf Day on 25 March. It’s a great opportunity to bring the family down and try out a free golf clinic taught by our resident golf professional. Or, you can try your hand at hitting that elusive hole in one with free green fees. To find out more about our golf courses or upcoming events, visit www.maroondahleisure.com.au

New policy focuses on Environmentally Sustainable Development Maroondah is paving the way for best-practice in environmentally sustainable development (ESD), by introducing an ESD Local Policy into its planning scheme. Amendment C137maro supports Council’s commitment to achieve a clean, green and sustainable community and provide leadership in responding to climate change. This amendment will strengthen Council’s ability to consider environmentally sustainable design measures when assessing a wide range of residential, commercial and industrial planning permit applications.

The amendment will come into effect when notice of its approval is published in the Victorian Government Gazette. For more information on the Amendment, visit Council’s website.

Exciting things are happening in your neighbourhood! Yarrunga bike track final design revealed Late last year, a draft concept plan for a proposed bike track at Yarrunga Reserve was presented to the community. We would like to say a big thank you to the many community members, reserve users and bike jump enthusiasts who provided feedback online, and who visited us on site to discuss the concept plan in more detail. Since then, our project team have been working closely with our track designers and consultant to ensure your ideas and suggestions have informed the final track design, which includes: • A and B lines to cater for different skill levels and abilities • Table tops increasing in size • Jumps ranging from three to six metres in length. Height ranging from 0.8 to 1.5 metres high • A large 1.8 metre berm on the north end of the track • A substantial starting mound • An overall outside loop distance of 160 metres You also told us you wanted an area that specifically catered for little ones who are just learning to ride, so we’ve allocated a space for a separate mini pump track just for them. The overall facility includes a shade area for easy viewing and a drinking fountain. In addition, further enhancement works for Yarrunga Reserve include bridge renewal and de-silting works which are underway, as well as the renewal of the tennis courts.

If you would like additional information on the pump track facility, please contact our Assets Project Manager on 1300 88 22 33 or 9298 4598. You can also email us at maroondah@maroondah.vic.gov.au. To receive future updates on this project or to see more as construction begins, visit www.yoursay.maroondah.vic.gov.au/ Yarrunga.

Evelyn Reserve – proposed purpose-built bike facility

Over the coming months, our Assets team will collate and analyse feedback received, and undertake any further planning or analysis required. This will assist us in identifying a strategic approach for the provision of bike facilities across our municipality. A detailed summary of the consultation outcomes and proposed next steps will be provided to the community in the coming months. There will also be further opportunities for the community to provide feedback and share their views. If you have any questions regarding any of these projects, please contact our Assets team on 1300 88 22 33 or 9298 4598. Information is also available on our Your Say consultation hub at www.yoursay. maroondah.vic.gov.au/evelyn

Woodland Park (including part of the former Croydon South Primary School) Enhancement Plan In December 2021, Council consulted the community on the suitability of a purposebuilt bike facility at Evelyn Reserve. Thank you to residents, reserve users and bike enthusiasts for their extensive feedback. The ideas, suggestions and input received will greatly assist us in delivering bike facilities that will balance the needs of users and interests of the wider community, whilst protecting native flora and fauna.

In December 2021, Council consulted with the community and key stakeholders on what they would like to see and how they use the southern part of the former Croydon South Primary School land and the existing Woodland Park. Council received significant feedback via our online platforms and during our onsite drop-in sessions. This feedback will now be used to develop a concept plan for the open space enhancements at Woodland Park to ensure the reserve continues to meet the needs of the community.

School crossings protecting our children and families In Maroondah we have 74 school crossings and 90 dedicated supervisors, who brave all weather conditions to ensure the safety of children as they cross roads to and from school. With students returning to on-site learning for the start of a new school year, it’s important that all road users are vigilant during peak drop-off and pick-up times.

Consider your role in helping children cross the road safely

Traffic and parking around schools needs to be managed carefully and all road users have a role to play to ensure supervisors can do their important job.

• When the flags are displayed at a children’s crossing, you must stop for pedestrians who are waiting to cross or who have started crossing. • You must come to a complete stop until the crossing is clear; these rules apply even if there is no crossing supervisor. • Do not stop or park your car over a school crossing. • Follow all parking restrictions.

A reduced 40km/h speed limit applies on weekdays within school zones across Victoria during the school term. Drivers must slow down to 40km/h between 8am and 9.30am, as well as after school between 2.30pm and 4pm around school zones.

Motorists are being urged to exercise caution and patience when travelling through school zones.

• Be aware of your surroundings, the speed limit and adhere to reduced 40km/h speed zones.

Get ready for Ride2School Day Maroondah school children are encouraged to embrace a fun and healthy start to their day by riding, scooting, skating or walking to school as part of National Ride2School Day on Friday 25 March. Walking or riding to school offers countless benefits; it’s a great way for parents to spend quality time with their children and to practice road safety skills, while also promoting a more active, healthy lifestyle. It’s also a great way to reduce commuter costs and vehicle congestion around schools. With the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, walking is a great way to maintain those community connections through safe, social interactions in the street. Schools can actively support riding and scooting to school by running Bicycle Education for students. Bike Education teaches children aged 9 to 13 skills for safe and independent bike riding. To learn more, visit VicRoads’ Bicycle Education page on their website.

To get involved in the program, visit the ‘rides and events’ page on www.bicyclenetwork.com.au Parents and teachers can also email ride2school@bicyclenetwork.com.au to register their child’s or school’s interest.

Walk Safely to School Day Friday 20 May marks National Walk Safely to School Day, a community initiative that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking, especially to and from school, can provide for the long-term health of our children. Now in its 23rd year, the annual event engages with parents, carers, teachers and students in highlighting the importance of road safety and encourages regular walking habits from an early age. It is recommended children get at least 60 minutes of exercise each day to prevent health issues such as childhood obesity. Aside from the physical benefits, research shows walking also has a favourable impact on children’s cognitive and academic performance. For more information, visit www.walk.com.au/WSTSD

Important tips to help your child get to and from school safely: • Always hold your child’s hand when you are crossing the road. • Always cross at pedestrian crossings or at a corner, wait for the lights and look in every direction to check there are no oncoming vehicles. • Stop at driveways and check there are no cars reversing or entering. • Start talking about road safety while your child is still in the stroller. Keep talking about road safety as they grow.

Did you know? Today, one out of four children regularly walk to school. A number of studies have found that children who walk to school are likely to engage in more physical activity overall and are more active than children who travel by car. Studies have also shown that children who exercise before school were more able to focus in the classroom compared to those who were driven by car. One in five primary school children and one in four secondary school adolescents are overweight or obese.

Level Crossing Removal update The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) is continuing to progress the planning and initial site investigations for the three level crossings to be removed in Maroondah. At the Bedford Road site, night works took place during early February and further site investigations are continuing to the end of March. These investigations will take place in the Belgrave and Lilydale line rail reserves and in local streets around the Bedford Road level crossing, including on Pitt Street and the Warrandyte Road rail bridge.

Council is working closely with the LXRP team to plan for the removal of the crossings at Bedford Road, Ringwood; Dublin Road, Ringwood East; and Coolstore Road Croydon; as well as for the new stations at Ringwood East and Croydon. Keep up to date on each of these important projects for our community by visiting www.levelcrossings.vic.gov.au

Detox your Home: household chemical removal service Rid your house of unwanted toxic items with the upcoming Detox Your Home event on Saturday 26 March, 9am to 2pm. Running for more than 27 years, Sustainability Victoria’s Detox your Home events are a free and convenient service to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals. Each Detox your Home event collects around four tonnes of hazardous chemicals, keeping them out of landfill. Detox your Home events are staffed by expert chemists who identify and sort the chemicals for safe transport back to a licenced facility in Melbourne where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal. The chemicals collected are processed and recovered or recycled wherever possible. Items accepted for disposal include: • Fuels and flammable liquids – turpentine, methylated spirits, petrol, kerosene, diesel, paint thinners • Garden – herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers, pool chemicals, poisons • Household – cleaners, bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, solvents, cooking oil, cosmetics, fire extinguishers

12 | Maroondah news

Helpful tips for storing chemicals

• Car – wax, transmission fluid, body filler, brake fluid. For more details and to register, visit Council’s website or visit the Sustainability Victoria webpage, www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/ detoxyourhome Detox your Home events are now drive-through and contactless, supported by a COVIDSafe plan. Registrations are essential.

• Store chemicals out of reach of children and animals. If possible, store chemicals in a locked cupboard or storage unit. • Keep chemicals out of direct sunlight and away from sources of heat, sparks, flames or ignition. • Do not store chemicals near food storage areas. • Check labels for correct storage advice. Some chemicals must not be stored together. For example, keep corrosive chemicals, such as battery acid, away from poisons. • If you can, keep liquid chemicals away from (or stored below) dry chemicals. Keep oxidising agents, such as peroxide, away from all other materials. • Pool chemicals can be particularly dangerous when stored incorrectly. Groups of swimming pool chemicals (oxidisers and corrosives) are highly reactive and need particular care.

Last chance to make a splash at Croydon Memorial Pool this season Take advantage of the last weeks to enjoy a swim outdoors, with the Croydon Memorial Pool season open until Sunday 3 April. Croydon Memorial Pool has plenty of space – and shade – to relax and have a splash. Choose from three heated outdoor pools: 50-metre pool, which is perfect for lap swimming; a leisure pool; and a toddler pool. Gather friends and family together for a picnic poolside on the lawn, or enjoy a treat from the kiosk. Opening hours during March and April are: • Monday to Friday, 6am to 10am; 4pm to 7.30pm • Weekends 8am to 12 noon • Labour Day, 8am to 7pm Croydon Memorial Pool is an accredited Watch Around Water facility, meaning there are guidelines that must be followed while visiting with children. To find out more, visit www.maroondahleisure.com.au

Due to an industry wide shortage of qualified employees and the impacts of the current COVID-19 testing and isolation requirements, Croydon Memorial Pool may be impacted by closures at short notice. Visit the Maroondah Leisure website for the latest opening hours.

Tee-off with ease: new golf cart fleet makes sport more accessible for all A new fleet of golf carts is now available at both the Ringwood and Dorset Golf courses.

Recent improvements and upgrading of Council’s golf cart fleet has meant golfers, especially those less mobile, can continue to enjoy their much-loved game.

Sally also plays on a Tuesday morning with a local golf group, the Bellbirds. Her favourite hole is the 11th, a great short hole with two sand bunkers. “It’s a lovely course. We always play at Ringwood and it is always in beautiful condition,” Sally said.

Ringwood Golf members and avid golfers Bill and Sally McDonnell have been playing the course since November. Bill has what he calls a ‘bung-knee’ (“two!” says Sally), undergoing two knee replacements which means he relies on the aid of a golf cart to play.

I’m so proud that in Maroondah we are continuing to support our local artists – with so many opportunities for exhibitions, activities and public artworks. If you’ve visited Ringwood East Shopping Centre recently, you might have noticed one of our latest commissions by artist Joanne Pearcy. With the support of Ringwood East Traders Association and a 2020/21 Maroondah Arts and Cultural Grant, Joanne has painted a series of small artworks along the shopfronts in Railway Avenue, Ringwood East.

As we are all aware, the impact of the pandemic is continuing to affect the mental health of people in our community.

The delightful, humorous paintings feature a range of native animals and plants that have been cleverly incorporated into the shopfronts. They are all various sizes and spread throughout the shopping strip. Next time you are down there, please take the time to appreciate the artworks and engage with the streetscape in a new way.

Food and Garden Organics service is coming to Maroondah in 2023! Maroondah is introducing a Food and Garden Organics service, which means the fortnightly garden bin service will accept food scraps in addition to garden materials. Recent audits have found that Maroondah households typically throw away an average of 3.4 kgs of food waste per week, equating to 176.8 kgs of food in landfill each year. This generates greenhouse gas emissions, uses finite space in landfill and is economically not sustainable. Currently, the garden waste collected is turned into a high-quality compost, used by Victorian farmers to help grow our food. Adding food scraps to the garden bin not only reduces the amount of garbage sent to landfill, but also improves the quality of the finished compost material. To mark the start of the service, current household maroon-lidded garden bins will be changed to the Australian Standard colour of lime green from February to May 2023. To reduce waste, only bin lids will be replaced, except for when the bin itself is structurally damaged. In this case, the entire bin will be replaced. Residents will be provided with kitchen caddies and compostable caddy liners to help collect food waste. We know that many households are already composting at home or feeding their scraps to pets.

The new service isn’t designed to replace these great low-waste habits—The new service will compliment home composting and allow for other food waste, like dairy, meat and spoiled food to also be diverted from landfill. To reduce unnecessary plastic waste, households that already have their own system for collecting food scraps will have the opportunity to opt-out of receiving a kitchen caddy and compostable caddy liners. More information will be provided as we prepare for the changeover next year. In the meantime, you can reduce the amount of food scraps heading to landfill by joining the Maroondah Compost Revolution. Visit www.compostrevolution/maroondah and get up to 60 per cent off a range of home composting systems delivered to your door!

Have your say During the month of March, Maroondah residents may receive a call from a market research company so we can better understand how residents are currently composting and how Council can best support the community in changing to the new service. We will also be seeking feedback via our Your Say Maroondah online consultation platform, so keep an eye out on the website for when the survey will open.

Want to keep up to date? Visit our Food and Garden Organics Service webpage to find out more about the new service and for opportunities to provide feedback on the tools and education materials to support this change.

Down to a fine art: exploring connections ArtSpace’s latest exhibition explores Maroondah’s connections to its Chinese-Australian community in Becoming Home: Stories of Chinese-Australians, from 1 to 20 March. We caught up with curator Tammy Wong Hulbert to discuss the inspiration, connection to the exhibition and the artists involved in Becoming Home.

stories to tell. They introduced us to Jenny Zhuang, Jiawen Lin, Fiona Wu and Leo Ren, who all had their own interesting journeys in making Maroondah their home.

What inspired the exhibition?

How did the collaboration process go?

The exhibition began as a conversation about developing a project that explored the Chinese-Australian community through a creative collaboration. I was keen to demonstrate an alternative representation of Chinese-Australians having a long and connected history here in Australia.

We had an amazing team of participants to work with, but it was challenging having to work under lockdown conditions in Melbourne over 2020/21. Under pre-pandemic conditions, I focused on spending time with participants so that we could really get to know each other, but during the pandemic, we had to rely on video meetings to establish the project and at one stage even asked the participants to make their own videos for use. These were then edited into Siying’s video and Ai’s sound files, so the production was truly collaborative. We also worked with Paul and Penny Cheong who provided their personal historical materials from their family collection and the Museum of Chinese-Australian history. They provided reproductions of photographs and materials to tell the Cheong family’s story from a historical perspective.

In particular, I was intrigued by the story of the significant Cheong Family who established themselves in Croydon in the late Victorian era. In my work as a gallery curator, I have often developed historical exhibitions and contemporary art exhibitions separately, but with this project, I wanted to bring together the voices of an earlier generation with current new immigrant voices. I saw that as an inspiring and interesting challenge. How did you start the curatorial process for this exhibition? I started with the interesting history of Cheong Park, but I also wanted to bring together this history with more contemporary voices in the community. In doing this, I enlisted Siying Zhou, a multimedia artist with a keen interest in Chinese-Australian history and Ai Yamamoto, a sound artist, who was able to capture the emotional landscape of the local environment. Together, we collaborated with Chinese Community Social Services, who supported us in finding local participants with interesting

What was the most exciting/inspiring part of the process? For me, it was meeting the participants in real life at their favourite places around Maroondah such as Ringwood Lake Park and McAlpin Reserve. These public places had really become safe places to retreat to during periods of lockdown in Melbourne and, in some ways, had become an extended loungeroom for the participants. We found they all had an enhanced appreciation of their local public parks.

Four of the 10 children of Cheok Hong Cheong (1851-1928) and his wife Wong Toy Chen (1849-1947).

The Cheong family have an amazing lineage in the Maroondah area. What was it like to work with the Cheong family? Meeting Paul Cheong and Lesley Lowe (nee Cheong) in Cheong Park and hearing them speak about growing up next to Cheong Park was a very special moment. We also had a guided visit to Cheong Wildflower Sanctuary with Maroondah employees, and seeing all those delicate indigenous flowers was really a wonderful experience. Visit Becoming Home: Stories of Chinese-Australians at ArtSpace till the 20 March. Becoming Home: Stories of Chinese-Australians is presented in partnership with Museum of Chinese Australian History, RMIT University Contemporary Art and Social, Transformation (CAST) and Chinese Community Social Services Centre, Inc.

Karralyka unveils 2022 theatre season Karralyka is bounding into 2022 with the launch of a bold and inspiring new theatre season program. After being closed for much of 2020 and 2021, Karralyka has reopened with a spectacular line-up of Australia’s best talent that will delight and excite audiences of all ages – from musical drama to comedy and song, and everything in-between. The season started with a bang last month, with Denis Walter performing his brand-new album, Yesterday Once More. In April, comedy laughs the house down with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival roadshow. Karralyka will also play host to the best of Adelaide Fringe Festival in the Gluttony on Tour event from 6 to 10 April. Don’t miss the chance to tantalise all your senses with amazing food,

wine, circus, cabaret, music and more! Then it’s time to dust off your sparkles for the Sapphires on 1 July, and do the time-warp in with the Rocky Horror Picture Show Interactive Experience on 8 July. The second half of the year is filled to the brim with food and musical events, starting Margaret Fulton, the Musical on 10 August. September marks a very special collaboration between two of Australia’s most lauded performers, Damien Leith and Darren Coggan. Together, they will celebrate the songbook of the most inspiring songwriters of all-time, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, in Two of us: The songs of Lennon and McCartney on 9 September. Then,

laugh and sing along to the popular musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in October. Following two sold-out tours of the Beatles’ Abbey Road live, all Aussie supergroup ARC – Kram (Spiderbait), Mark Wilson (Jet), Davey Lane (You Am I) and Darren Middleton (Powderfinger) – returns to perform the final Beatles album, Let It Be in full, followed by a second set covering the breadth of the Beatles’ music catalogue. Karrakids also has a bumper season, with shows from Ice Queen and Alphabet Science. And in an exciting first, popular children’s author-illustrator pair Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton are bringing to the stage their first-ever play on Wednesday 13 April. Adapted from the multi-award winning book The 13-Storey Treehouse, the play will take viewers through their wild and wonderful world with flying cats, a mermaid, sea monster, invasion of monkeys and a giant gorilla! The theatre is also excited to welcome back seniors to its popular Morning Music program (formerly Toe Tapping Tuesday), with music and complimentary tea, coffee and treats throughout the year.

Australian Rock Collective (ARC): Darren Middleton (Powderfinger), Davey Lane (You Am I), Mark Wilson (Jet) and Kram (Spiderbait).
