Mayor’s message Council continues to advocate about important issues on behalf of our community.

Welcome to the Summer edition of Maroondah news, and my first as the newly elected Mayor of Maroondah for 2025/26. In my first term as Mayor, I am looking forward to representing our community with integrity, respect and dedication, with the support of our Deputy Mayor, Cr Paul Macdonald, and our fellow Councillors.

Part of Council’s role includes advocating on behalf of our community about important issues, such as the Victorian Government’s proposed planning reform bill (introduced to Parliament in October). We, along with other Councils, are lobbying the Victorian Government to ensure these reforms will not result in unintended negative consequences for local communities.

At the time of writing this message, Councils had not been genuinely consulted on the proposed reforms, despite these having a direct and profound impact on local communities and despite the wealth of local knowledge, expertise and experience Councils could provide.

While we acknowledge and support the need for additional housing, if the Bill is passed in its current form, Councils will be forced to implement new provisions that we have

had no input into. This could lead to negative impacts on our community, including rushed decisions resulting in potential errors; a lack of public advertisement of applications; and impacts on affordable housing requirements.

We are continuing to urge the Victorian Government to work with us on positive, impactful solutions, so that local communities can have a voice and help shape the future direction for Victoria. You can read more about our advocacy efforts on our website, where we will continue to provide updates.

Naomi Walsh named 2025 Bill Wilkins Volunteer of the Year Congratulations to Naomi Walsh, who has been recognised for her exceptional dedication and more than 20 years of service to the Maroondah community.

Naomi’s commitment to environmental outcomes is evident through her founding of the Friends of Ringwood Lake group.

As a hands-on environmentalist, she inspires others across Maroondah to reduce waste and take action for a better environment. Since 2016, she has also hosted two free planting day events and a community barbecue each year, fostering community spirit and connection.

Naomi has also helped shape the lives of young people in Maroondah, having volunteered as a Scouts Cub Leader from 2007 to 2013, and as a long-term foster carer.

In 2016, Naomi created the ‘Food is Free’ food pantry initiative in Ringwood East, to support those experiencing difficulties in obtaining essential items for their families.

She then shared her ideas, experience and contacts with others, to help establish similar support services in the community.

Naomi has also been a member of her Local Exchange Trading System (LETS) group since 2007, providing administrative support for much of that time to help create connections within the local community. Congratulations, Naomi!

Council established the Bill Wilkins Volunteer of the Year Award in 2019, in honour of

Supporting older residents to feel safe and confident The Maroondah Seniors Register is continuing to help older people living in Maroondah to feel safe, confident and connected with their community. as their chosen family member or regular doctor, which can be used if there are concerns for the welfare of the person.

The register is also a great way for volunteers to give back to their community.

The Council-led service provides social connection for members of the register, while offering their relatives and friends peace of mind, knowing that someone is looking out for their loved ones.

Members of the register receive fortnightly or monthly calls from volunteers who provide a ‘safe and well’ check.

With the consent of the member, the register also contains their emergency contact details, such

Make a difference in your community Our Meals on Wheels team is seeking volunteers to assist with delivering meals to clients.

Council’s Meals on Wheels volunteers generously give their time to deliver nutritionally balanced meals and ‘safe and well’ checks to Maroondah residents who are experiencing difficulties with preparing their own meals.

Our volunteers are individuals and couples from all walks of life, including retirees, people who are supported by their carer, a group from a Special Development School, Eastern Ranges School, and more.

“It’s very rewarding being able to give back to the community,” Ingrid, a volunteer, said.

POWER OUTAGES

During extreme heat, drink plenty of water, take it easy and stay indoors.

If you need to go out, wear a hat and sunscreen and stay in the shade. Never leave children, older people, or pets in cars, as cars can heat to dangerous temperatures quickly.

All property owners should ensure their homes and properties (including vacant land) are fire ready leading up to the Fire Danger Period. This includes regularly removing fine fuels – such as branches, twigs, bark and fallen leaves – and other fire hazards.

If your power goes out, contact your electricity distributor and use the AusNet Services Outage Tracker www.outagetracker.com.au to stay up to date. Visit the Energy Victoria website www.energy.vic.gov.au for further advice.

If the Bureau of Meteorology/Chief Health Officer issues a Heat Health Warning, Council’s Heatwave Plan will be activated and some regular services may be reduced or cancelled for safety reasons. Council will advertise changes or contact those impacted, but you can call us on 1300 88 22 33 to check if you are unsure.

WATCH OUT FOR THE FIRE DANGER PERIOD The CFA declares the Fire Danger Period during periods of increased fire risk – usually from December to April each year. Keep an eye on the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au for updates and advice, including how to develop your Bushfire Plan.

Use the VicEmergency website emergency.vic.gov.au/respond or app to monitor conditions, especially before travelling, or visit the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au for daily fire danger ratings.

TOTAL FIRE BAN DAYS Fires in the open air are legally restricted on CFA-declared total fire ban days, when the fire danger is extreme. Visit the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au to find out what you can and can’t do on days of total fire ban.

In good news for our Ward, Council will install a half basketball court at The Range Estate wetlands area, next to Evans Drive in Croydon.

A new year is a great time to step outside your routine and embrace new activities that support your health and wellbeing.

The project includes a half basketball court; a concrete pathway to connect the court with the existing pathway and seating area; and a more formalised crushed rock track, to help create a smooth and accessible pathway.

Dorset Golf runs lessons and clinics for all ages – it’s a fun way to get outdoors, learn new skills, and meet people.

For those feeling creative, Arrabri Community House has short courses and workshops to build confidence, explore hobbies, and make new friends.

Exciting improvements are coming to Heathmont Tennis Club at Heathmont Reserve. With funding from Council and the Victorian Government, all seven courts will soon feature new LED lights, in line with Australian Standards, delivering safer play, better visibility, and tennis after dark all year round.

Following resident feedback on our concept plan, the project will now include a special ground surface to minimise potential noise that may travel from the basketball court to surrounding areas. Thank you to those who provided feedback to help us achieve this great outcome.

Families with young children can access Arrabri Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Centre, one of several Council-run MCH centres offering support, guidance and programs for parents and carers.

Un/Becoming by Claire Bridge is a new exhibition of ceramics, painting and installation presenting bodies and beings in transformation. Connections between women, water and reimagined myths are explored through hybrid sculptural forms.

The exhibition showcases the powerful creative potential that resides in the meeting of ink and printing matrix with paper.

Works reflect the depth and scope of prints held in the Collection.

It challenges colonial and patriarchal narratives, reflects on our environmental relationships and encourages new ways of seeing the world.

FLOS + LEGERE BY KERRI WILSON MCCONCHIE Tuesday 27 January to Friday 13 March Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery, Ringwood Flos + Legere (Latin for flora and gather) assembles and choreographs local indigenous plants into large scale moving images projected onto transparent fabrics.

The projections reflect the cyclical nature of decay and renewal, highlighting the beauty of vulnerable flora. Move through the space for a meditative experience of presence and impermanence.

New information hub for local schools Are you a teacher, school leader or educator in Maroondah? Try using the ‘Schools information hub’ on Council’s website.

The information hub acts as a ‘one-stop shop’, making it easier for schools and educators to find support and connect with the many resources, programs, opportunities and services that Council provides.

It features networks, newsletters, professional development opportunities, funding and grants, classroom resources, support resources for students and their families, venues and facilities available for hire, and more.

The online information hub has received positive feedback so far.

“The ‘Schools information hub’ is a great idea. I have shared this link with all staff to consider local connections when planning excursions, incursions etc,” one user said.

“A really great one-stop resource – thank you! I always look to Council for resources and parent supports/sessions, so having it all on the one page is really beneficial,” another user said.

The webpage is another example of Council’s commitment to supporting vibrant, informed and engaged school communities across Maroondah.

Helping residents navigate the NDIS Learn more about kindergarten Do you have a young child and want to learn more about kindergarten in Maroondah? Come along to the free Kindergarten Information Night on Tuesday 24 February, 6.30pm to 8pm at Karralyka in Ringwood East.

The evening will be a great opportunity to learn more about kindergarten and the enrolment process, support available and kindergarten options in Maroondah.

Parents and carers of children considering 3- or 4-year-old kindergarten are encouraged to attend.

The night will cover general information, presented by Maroondah City Council and the Department of Education, followed by a question and answer panel session where they will be joined by other early years professionals.

No bookings are required, but you can register for event updates on Council’s website.

Could you use some help to understand the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)? Try contacting Council’s NDIS Program Lead.

Council is pleased to support Maroondah residents through a dedicated NDIS Program Lead who provides Maroondah residents – including those with disability and those caring for a person with disability – with general and individual information. They can help you understand and navigate the NDIS. Advocacy support is also available.

Our NDIS Program Lead can support you over the phone, with face-to-face meetings at home (or another venue) or by email. They can explain, in straightforward language while considering each person’s circumstances, what to expect about the process of applying for, reviewing or appealing NDIS plans, as well as provide other practical information about resources available.

Although Council is unable to confirm individual residents’ eligibility for specific NDIS support services and plan allocations, our NDIS Program Lead can help you understand the system and how it might be able to support your needs.

“We attended a NDIS information session with no real appreciation of what was involved – only that support ‘may be’ possible. We came away with a very clear understanding that support was possible,” one Maroondah resident said about their experience with Council’s NDIS Program Lead.

Our NDIS Program Lead also provides professional presentations and seminars to guide professionals and their teams in supporting clients with diverse support needs and who may wish to request a variety of support services through the NDIS. COLLECTION GUIDELINES •

On your collection day, place bins out by 6am and bring them in within 24 hours of collection.

Check your bin weight. If you can’t easily wheel your bin to the kerb, or it weighs more than 40kg, then it’s probably too heavy to be collected.

•

Your bin lid must be fully closed. Don’t overfill your bin as extra bags of rubbish will not be collected and you will be required to pick up any litter created due to the lid not being closed.

Batteries and electronic waste don’t belong in your bins Household batteries (including AA, AAA, C, D, 9V and button batteries) and electronic waste (anything with a plug, cord or battery) cannot be placed into any of your household bins. They contain hazardous materials that can cause fires or pollute the environment. However, if disposed of properly, they can be recycled.

There are several options to safely dispose of batteries and electronic waste (e-waste) in Maroondah. There are battery disposal drop-off points across Maroondah, including major supermarkets and the Recycling Station at Realm. For safety, remember to tape both ends of the battery with clear sticky tape before taking to a battery drop-off point.

The Realm Recycling Station also accepts small e-waste items for recycling, or you can bring larger e-waste items to Council’s E-waste + more event, which is held in May and October of each year.

A TO Z OF WASTE DISPOSAL

Composting is a great way to recycle food waste at home, whilst also producing a rich fertiliser for your garden.

As well as reducing waste to landfill, reusable nappies, period products and incontinence products are often far more comfortable and can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars over their lifetime.

Council’s online A to Z of waste disposal is a useful guide on how to dispose of those more difficult items you might have around the house, such as aerosols, car batteries and X-rays.

Council offers residents up to 60 per cent off a range of home composting and worm farming systems through our Compost Revolution program. Each Maroondah residential property is eligible for one subsidised system per year.

Supporting more children to play local team sports More Maroondah children are playing local team sports thanks to a program that supports children who otherwise may not be able to take part.

Sports 4 All Maroondah is a partnership between Council and TeamSports4All, a Melbourne-based charity that connects eligible 5 to 18 year olds with their chosen team sport, pays their fees and other costs, and provides ongoing support so that children can continue to play.

The partnership program, funded through the Australian Government’s Play Well Grant, has connected 119 Maroondah children, comprising of children from low socio-economic communities, children with disability, children who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and children of all genders.

Lee Emberton, Operations Manager at TeamSports4All, said: “The program strengthens belonging and confidence among young people, connecting families to community networks and positive role models. This inclusive approach contributes directly to child wellbeing, social cohesion, and early intervention in youth disengagement.

“During the most recent campaign, we have seen notable growth in participation in Maroondah. Local clubs have expanded their capacity to include children who may never have previously had access to organised sport. Importantly, retention rates remain high, with many children continuing to participate for multiple seasons.

“It also builds long-term community resilience by fostering connected, active, and socially engaged families.

Children who participate in team sport through TeamSports4All are more likely to develop teamwork, leadership, and self-discipline, which extends into education and employment pathways.

“The support of Council, local schools, community agencies and sports clubs has been truly appreciated.”

Pick up after your dog Do the right thing and pick up after your dog – our natural environment and community depend on it.

Dog poo is high in nutrients that pollute and damage the environment, negatively impacting indigenous plants and wildlife.

Council employees work hard to maintain reserves and conserve biodiversity, and often encounter dog poo when working.

Picking up after your dog helps ensure children can play safely in reserves and that our community can enjoy using sports grounds.

2026 FOGO liner deliveries – last chance to decline your delivery In mid-February, Council will start delivering extra food organics and garden organics (FOGO) kitchen caddy liners to households with a residential kerbside waste service.

If you don't need them yet, Friday 6 February is your last chance to decline to receive your 2026 FOGO liner delivery.

If you would like to change your delivery status, you can notify us by completing an online form on Council’s website.

If you need more liners outside of the annual delivery, simply drop into our Customer Service Centres at Croydon or Realm in Ringwood Town Square to collect a top-up pack.

Summer is a great time to explore McAlpin Ward on foot or by bike.

From walking trails and cycling paths to parks and recreation spaces, there are plenty of ways to get active locally, boost your mental health and support social connections.

Visitors to Cheong Park can now explore new historical signage that provides information about people, places and stories that have shaped the Croydon area over time.

Visitors to Croydon Park can soon enjoy a new-look Z Space playspace, with renewal works due to start in February.

The upgraded playspace will include climbing structures, track slide and other elements to encourage physical activity, social play and problem-solving for children of different ages and abilities.

The new signage complements the yarning circle, which acknowledges First Nations history and culture, offering a meaningful way for the community to learn about and reflect on our shared past.

Cheong Park is also a hub for local sporting groups, including football and cricket clubs, and a lovely spot for picnics and barbecues. Thanks to local groups like the Friends of Cheong Park, who help maintain the park through planting and weeding, it remains a welcoming space for everyone who visits.

Empowering young people with disabilities Maroondah Leisure recently partnered with Nadrasca to offer valuable work experience opportunities for young people with disabilities.

The partnership is part of Nadrasca’s My Life, My Future program, which provides customised employment pathways through hands-on industry experience. Several successful placements have taken place across Maroondah Leisure facilities through this collaboration.

Improve your water safety skills Maroondah Leisure offers programs to help residents of all ages and abilities improve their water safety skills and knowledge.

PROGRAMS ON OFFER INCLUDE: •

Learn to Swim programs at Aquanation and Aquahub, with lessons available from infants to adults

Access for All Abilities swimming programs, for children and adults with disability or with additional learning needs

The participants assisted with Learn to Swim classes, setting up gymnastics rotations, working out in the Health Club, lending a hand in the café and customer service areas, and providing administrative support.

Eamon and Anthony were also introduced to greens maintenance and other activities at Dorset Golf.

Each participant took part in the placements with liveliness, enthusiasm and commitment.

Making progress in Maroondah As part of Council’s $46.03 million Capital Works Program, projects are continuing to take shape.

ROADS Heywood Street, Ringwood Road renewal works will start soon at Heywood Street in Ringwood between Barkly Street and Sylvia Grove.

The works will address the deterioration of the road and will improve the condition of vehicle crossovers and footpath segments to make the area safer and more accessible for our community.

Also included in the project will be improved stormwater drainage infrastructure, which will help reduce floodwater overflow onto footpaths and properties.

FACILITIES Wyreena Community Arts Centre

Road reconstruction work is complete in Croydon to address the road deterioration of Ainslie Park Avenue.

The kerb and channel, vehicle crossovers and some footpath segments have been reconstructed to provide a safer, more accessible roadway for our community.

New stormwater drainage infrastructure has also been constructed to help reduce flooding impacts to nearby properties.

OPEN SPACE Norwood Reserve, Ringwood

Exciting renewal works are about to be underway at Wyreena Community Arts Centre in Croydon to renew the conservatory. The renewed structure will complement the existing heritage building and provide a state-of-the-art space to service the thriving Wyreena community.

The renewed conservatory will house the café and provide a versatile events and functions space, ensuring the facility can continue to cater to the needs of the community.

Enhancement works at Norwood Reserve in Ringwood are nearing completion. New stormwater drainage infrastructure has been constructed, car park improvement works are finalised, and landscaping and vegetation works are almost complete.

The community will soon be able to enjoy the improved area, including the 21 additional car park spaces, loop walking trail, yarning circle, nature play elements, new seating areas, improved footpath access to the adjoining community centre, and the beautiful new trees and vegetation.

As part of the Croydon Community Wellbeing Precinct project, Keystone Hall was demolished in November to prepare for the construction of a new multipurpose hub. This hub will replace Keystone Hall next to the Croydon Athletics Track and will be home to Croydon Bowls Club, the Croydon RSL and current sporting groups. Council has received funding from the Australian Government to help ensure this upgrade meets the needs of Maroondah’s local sporting and community groups.

As a passionate supporter of the arts, I’m proud that we have a regional arts venue like Karralyka in the heart of the Wombolano Ward.

It’s great to see Council’s continued investment in maintaining and upgrading Maroondah’s footpaths as part of the Principal Pedestrian Network program, making it easier and safer for everyone to get around.

During my time as Chair of the Maroondah Liveability, Safety and Amenity Committee, I’ve seen how important it is for our community to stay informed and prepared, especially during the warmer months.

In Ringwood North, footpath construction has recently been completed along Kubba Road, Kubis Drive and Werac Drive, providing smoother, more accessible connections for pedestrians.

Pool owners should ensure barriers are compliant and safety certificates are up to date. If you’re unsure, contact Council to confirm when your certificate is due and what steps to take.

Remember to always supervise children in and around water.
