Edit or’s Letter New beginnings

Where does the time go? It doesn’t seem very long since I was sending my daughter off to her first day at Primary school – this month she is off to University. We are so proud of her, and excited to see the success she will make of her life, but our excitement is tinged with sadness, because we will miss her very much. It’s a real milestone that many other people are experiencing too, a change in the family dynamic – some people will have an empty nest, others like us, will find the house quieter, but still be occupied with school runs and homework and football and nagging to pick clothes up off the floor! Undoubtedly though it is a new beginning, which needs to be embraced – who knows what new experiences are around the corner? Just let me have a little cry first, then I’ll be raring to go…. Our interviewee this month, Dr Alison Brooks, is experiencing a new beginning of her own – a move to her brand new purpose-designed clinic – read all about her on page 6. Hope you enjoy the magazine this month – and if you’re facing a life change, that it proves a good one!

Alison Brooks Dr Alison Brooks runs The Mirabel Clinic which specialises in cosmetic dermatology, skin rejuvenation techniques, Botox, dermal fillers, IPL and laser treatments. She lives in Ogbourne St George with her husband Adam, an orthopaedic surgeon, and her children Katie, 19, Milo, 16, and Harry, 15. The family have two friendly black Labradors. Are you from the local area? No – I was born in Nairobi. My father was an executive with Cable and Wireless, and had jobs in Africa, Hong Kong and the Middle East. I went to boarding school in England, and used to fly off to lots of interesting places in the holidays. It wasn’t until I went to Medical School that I stayed in one place for any length of time. Why did you become a doctor? I always wanted to be a doctor – perhaps because my Grandfather always wanted to be a doctor, but was persuaded to become a dentist instead. I was always fascinated with biology and the human body. I loved studying and dissecting animals and so on. My fascination with the human body developed into a more encompassing interest in human beings – I always wanted to know more about people.

6

I worked as a GP after I qualified, and carried on doing so for a good while after I started Mirabel. In fact I only stopped around 18 months ago when the business was growing so much.

It goes back to people. I really enjoy seeing my regular clients and having a good catch up whilst making them feel better about themselves.

Do you miss being a GP?

place in Marlborough, but it proved extremely difficult. In the end I found a great space in the Old Town area of Swindon which is perfect for what we need. It has two floors above a gift shop in Wood Street, where there is a waiting room, reception room and three clinic rooms. By the time people are reading this we should be open for business.

At one point I thought I would never give up being a GP, but I became so busy that I had to choose and felt that my business was the thing I wanted to invest more time in. I have been very surprised that I don’t really miss it. I still keep in touch with some of my old patients and GP colleagues, but that’s it. Mirabel is moving to new premises, how did that come about? This year we are celebrating 10 years since the clinic opened. It has been very successful, and I have been looking for premises to move to for several years now. We spent quite a long time looking for a suitable

I like the location – it is very discreet, there is plenty of parking nearby, and the area is nice for a wander around if you want to make more of your visit. What can people expect at the new place? More of the same – over the past 10 years I have

People built a very robust medical aesthetic clinic. It is well established and has a very strong reputation. The clinic will allow me to add more treatments, and to employ more medical staff to carry them out.

having all the nice parts of being a GP without the difficult parts. I have a wide range of clients, with the core being in their 40s and 50s. Often we have a lot in common so it’s a pleasure to catch up with them.

New additions to the services we offer include LipoMed, a body sculpting treatment that uses cryolipolysis or “fat freezing”; thread-lifting, which is a type of nonsurgical facelift; Sculptra, which are collagen stimulant injections used instead of fillers (used in the NHS for patients with facial lipoatrophy); and a new hair removal laser – Soprano – which works well on patients with darker skin types and for sensitive areas.

I also enjoy the mental stimulus of ongoing training, which is important to me.

I am constantly researching new treatments and developments to ensure that we offer patients the very best. Have you enjoyed the process of creating the new clinic? Yes, once all the initial planning permission etc was out of the way. I used an excellent Interior Designer from Brighton, called Chloe, who specialises in clinic design – it has been a joy working with her as she has taken all of the hassle out of it! My practice manager Debbie Sandison and I have had the fun of choosing bits and bobs to add the finishing touches. It’s been a bit like furnishing a new house – the look is a bit New England, with white and blue and driftwood and so on. What do you enjoy most about what you do? It goes back to people. I really enjoy seeing my regular clients and having a good catch up whilst making them feel better about themselves. I would describe it as like

What do you enjoy least? I’m lucky, I get to concentrate on the part that I enjoy and that I am good at – the clinical side, and strategy going forward. Debbie runs the business side of things, and I rely on her a lot. We are friends as well as colleagues and she does a great job. I also find it difficult if there is ever a problem with a treatment – with any medical procedure there are always risks however small. There is a real weight of responsibility, and I am not happy until any issues are resolved for the benefit of the patient. I think any doctor would say the same thing. Thankfully, problems are rare. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I play tennis regularly, and have lessons with a great coach, Lewis, over at Ramsbury. I have a group of tennis girlfriends who come to the lessons with me on a Wednesday. I also enjoy golf, usually at Ogbourne. Running is probably my favourite thing – I love getting out into the countryside, often with the dog. All I need is my kit, shoes and headphones and I’m happy. Whenever I go away I always take my running kit with me as you can run anywhere. I never thought I’d get into running – I didn’t start until a few years ago when they resurfaced the path behind my house in Hallam and I thought it

might be a good idea to give it a go. The first time I went out I was dreadful, but got into it quite quickly – after just a few weeks I found I could run over 10k. I wish I’d discovered how much I enjoyed it earlier in life – I can get away with enjoying my food, and I love the endorphin kick running gives me. I ran the Marlborough Half Marathon with my husband, Debbie’s husband, Will, and a couple of other local friends recently, which was great fun and so beautiful. Where do you like to eat out locally? I had a lovely meal in the Bell at Ramsbury recently. We’re looking forward to Rick Stein’s new restaurant too, as we have eaten at his restaurant in Padstow regularly. If they can get the buzz of the Cornwall place in Marlborough I’m sure it will be a big success. For lunch times I like The Food Gallery and Bow Belles. Favourite Shop? For clothes I love Kim Vine, and for interiors I like Bow House. Do you enjoy reading? I love reading – I’m in a book group, which makes me read books I might not otherwise read – our latest is The Mandibles by Lionel Shriver. I enjoy authors like Jonathan Franzen, his books have interesting characters and explore family. At the end of September I am going with my book group to see Lionel Shriver speak at The Marlborough Litfest, which should be interesting. I would like to read more autobiographies (I’ve heard Andre Agassi’s is good), but it’s finding the time! To find out more about Mirabel visit www.mirabelclinic.co.uk

News from ARK As well as looking after the river, Action for the River Kennet organises events to help people learn about it and enjoy it. Following on from their successful Life of the River Day, they held their Summer River Walk at the end of August. Supported by Thames Water the walk attracted 40 people despite torrential rain, thunder and lightning throughout the afternoon. The public walked usually private stretches of riverbank along the River Kennet from Marlborough to Axford and had the opportunity along the route to see a recent river restoration project carried out by ARK since last year’s walk as part of the Minal River Project, where 2,500 tonnes of gravel was put into the river to replace the gravels dredged out in the 1970s. Tea and home-made cakes were a welcome addition to the day, served from a shepherd’s hut in Minal.

In September ARK carried out its third annual Big River Litter Pick through Marlborough. Regular ARK volunteers were joined by staff from Nationwide, Swindon HQ to clear the river of rubbish from Stonebridge Wild River Reserve to town. In three hours they waded upstream from the reserve and litter picked a whole boat full including a chair, traffic cones and lots of glass bottles and bits of rusty metal.

10

“Encouragingly there was less than in previous years, but it is still sad to see so much junk end up in our rivers that is potentially dangerous to wildlife and people.” said ARK Project Officer Anna Forbes.

Learn to draw from Life Marlborough artist Tania Coleridge is running life drawing classes at her new Studio space between Chiseldon and Wroughton. The current class begins on the 5th October. Tania spent her young childhood in Kenya on her artist grandmother’s farm, and moved to England to study art and drama at Belsize Park Fine Arts, also spending a year in Florence studying art and the history of

art. To make money she worked as a model and actress and travelled all over the world.

Always seeking to be creative, she found a career in LA with a group of young entrepreneurs and designed restaurants and bars on both east and west coasts. In her late twenties, she settled in Venezuela, where she and her husband bought a cacao farm. During these years, they created the chocolate brand “Willies Cacao” whilst she continued to develop her art by learning tribal techniques using colours from the tropical plants and sculpting gauds with local craftsmen. Having been creative all her life, she now lives in Wiltshire and has devoted herself to painting. Her inspiration is drawn from being surrounded by nature in the jungles of Venezuela and has given her a depth of understanding of composition and the vibrancy of colour, which is synonymous with her work. This first public exhibition, ‘Flight’, addresses one of the old masters’ favourite subjects, the pheasant. The detail and intricacy of the way she looks at feathers is refreshing and modern. “The symbolic meaning of feathers runs deep in many cultures; they generally represent spiritual evolution to a higher place, their importance in the arts over the centuries has been prolific and their beauty and versatility, as a subject, is endless” explains Tania. The exhibition opens on the 3 November at 6-8pm, and runs for two weeks at The White Horse Book Shop in Marlborough. If you are interested in Tania’s class contact her on 07917 177246 or email taniahc@me.com

District Council, New Zealand came over to visit their counterparts in the UK. Councillor Cynthia Brooks from Marlborough, New Zealand, formally swapped books with our Mayor, Councillor Noel Barrett Morton in the Town Hall. Our books, all about Marlborough and Wiltshire are now on loan down under and the books about Marlborough, New Zealand are available at your Library in the High Street. Whilst she was here, Cllr Brooks also donated an oil painting by Clarry Neame to the Town Council which is now hanging in the Town Hall. Watch out for other initiatives to strengthen our links with New Zealand.

Blitz on Bins We have noticed that a small number of public bins emptied by Wiltshire Council contractors and our own Grounds Team are being used by some householders to dispose of household waste. Councilowned bins are on streets and in public open spaces to help keep these areas tidy and are regularly cleared by our teams but, if used for household waste, soon become full and overflow into the adjacent area. This can be a danger to public health and a hazard to wildlife as well as not being a good use of already stretched resources. These bins are not provided for household waste and it is illegal to use them in this way. In fact, in some council areas, fixed penalty fines have been issued. More information about disposing of household waste is available at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/ household-waste

Let Them Eat Cake

I know! I know! We should be cutting back on our carbs and sugars and exercising more which, as you will know, I am endeavouring to do, but, a little piece of cake now and then won’t harm, ...will it?

Some may say that I am a tad competitive. They may be right. My problem with cakes started when my son was little. I held a birthday party for him and bought a supermarket cake which, whilst lovely on the outside, was actually dreadful inside. Having grown up watching my Nana and my Sister baking, I thought I’d give it a try. Year on year since then, I have made all of the birthday cakes depicting themes such as a Minion and “The Great Escape”, to varying degrees of success. From cakes, my repertoire has spread to eclairs, meringues and macaroons, a great escape indeed from the busy legal world during the week. I now have a posh pistachio coloured mixer which makes divine butter icing as well as looking so pretty in my kitchen. Is it wrong to love a food mixer? My first foray into real competitive baking was the Easton Royal produce show. For a few years I entered my fruit scones, cup cakes and decorated sponge cakes with mixed results. Whilst Helen Mirren may have her Oscar, I am the proud owner of two First prize certificates from the produce show. Beat that Helen! Thank heavens for on line recipes and reviews as well as the huge range of gorgeous baking books available. As you may guess, the “Great British Bake Off” is essential viewing in the Kellow household. Having met a previous contestant at a baking event in Burbage a few years ago, I even entered the competition,

14

completing the 16 page entry form setting out my experience of baking all things naughty. What I hadn’t quite appreciated was that about 25,000 others would do the same. Suffice to say, I wasn’t selected. Probably not a bad thing as I’d have been a quivering wreck on bread week with Paul Hollywood prodding my loaf with a glint in his piercing, somewhat hypnotic blue eyes, not to mention the fear of letting Mary down. However, it’s always fun to watch and follow the emotions of the competitors as their gingerbread houses collapse ten seconds before they present them to Paul and Mary. I shout at the TV “Use more royal icing..!” as if I’m some sort of an expert. The dreaded technical bake is always fun too. After all this time, it’s always a complete surprise and terror to those having to work out the cryptic instructions. As well as making cakes for colleagues’ birthdays in the office, I had a new challenge this year. My son moved up into the U13’s cricket team at Burbage. This not only means a longer game, with more overs, but also, the cricket tea. What fun. There’s nothing better than a cricket tea, but when it came my turn, I couldn’t help but get a bit competitive. My Husband and

Daughter made the sandwiches and I spent a day and a half on eclairs, lemon drizzle tray bake, scones, chocolate beetroot cake (sounds dreadful but actually very yummy) and a Lorraine Pascale recipe which she calls “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Zebra”. It’s amazing, give it a go, it’s surprisingly easy but very effective. Now whilst I don’t advocate such extremes for a cricket tea, it made me very happy for the weekend. What I need to do now is find a cake club. I have read about clubs, akin to a book club but all about cake. This has to be the way forwards. Turn up, have a good natter, a cup of tea and sample each other’s cakes… non competitively, of course! “Ready, steady….bake!” Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. When she isn’t running around after her family she is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors, specialising in family law.

Sunday Lunch wit h a View The Clubhouse at Marlborough Golf Club sits in an enviable position overlooking the Downs. The design of the building makes the most of this fact by siting the bar and restaurant on the first floor with panoramic windows giving fantastic views of the golf course and the countryside beyond. As regular readers of the magazine will know the Head Chef at the Club is Yvonne Hamlett, and she invited us along to try the Sunday Carvery. The bar and restaurant of the Club are open to all, you don’t have to be a member. On the day we went along there were people of all ages enjoying their Sunday lunch, including a couple of tables with three generations of diners, and a large group of about fifteen. It made for a nice buzzy atmosphere. The tables are dressed with crisp white table cloths and have everything you will need for lunch including sauces and a cold jug of water. Service is friendly and helpful, and while we decided what to eat our drinks order was swiftly taken and fulfilled. The menu changes from week to week, with a good selection of starters and desserts as well as the Carvery itself. The prices are very reasonable – starters and desserts are all £4.50, and the main course is £9.95, with a Children’s Carvery for ages 4-8 at £4.50. All the food is made fresh on the premises, from local ingredients wherever possible. There was a good selection of starters, with some traditional favourites. I chose chicken liver pâté, and my husband Mark chose garlic mushrooms. Both dishes were delicious – the pâté was very

20

flavoursome, with a soft texture, and the mushrooms were served in a tasty creamy garlic sauce. Our son John, who is 10, didn’t have a starter as he was saving himself for the main course!

Yvonne caters for all, so there is always a vegetarian option, and Gluten Free choices too. We are very fond of a Sunday Lunch in our household (especially if someone else has prepared it), so were looking forward to the Carvery. It is fair to say we were not disappointed! You can choose from three meats, which when we were there were beef, turkey and pork. Between us we had all three (up to two meats per person), I had beef, Mark had beef and pork and John chose turkey. To accompany the meat there was an excellent selection of potatoes and vegetables, as well as gravy, Yorkshire puddings, and crackling. As you help yourself to the potatoes and vegetables portions are very generous should you so choose. (Mark, who is deceptively slim, could eat a horse if he tried). Yvonne caters for all, so there is always a vegetarian option, and Gluten Free choices too. Even John, a notoriously fussy eater was well catered for – turkey is his favourite meat, and he loved

the parsnips and carrots. We even got him to try the broccoli and cauliflower mornay. I always think a Sunday Roast stands or falls on the quality of the meat – and in this case it was perfect. The beef was melt in the mouth tender, the turkey not at all dry (it disappeared rapidly from John’s plate), and I was assured the pork was just as good. We would all heartily recommend. Despite being quite full (ahem!), in the interests of this review we thought it was our duty to have dessert. Dithering between the Salted Caramel Profiteroles and Eton Mess, I eventually plumped for the latter. Mark went straight for his favourite – Treacle Sponge and Custard; and John had ice cream. Mine was delicious, and a very generous portion, the treacle sponge was pronounced “Amazing!” (this from a connoisseur), and John was very happy with his chocolate ice cream. By this time we were all absolutely full, so decided to give coffee and mints a miss. Online Divorce – the truth.

This month I have to admit that, at having read a post on a local notice board on a well- known social media site and seeing the words “ divorce – online is so easy ” my heart sank and my stomach churned. “My Divorce was done in 4 weeks “ – another stomach churning phrase. Legally it cannot be done in 4 weeks because one is not allowed to make the application for the Decree Absolute until 6 weeks after the granting of the Decree Nisi. This is to allow finances to be sorted out. Most divorces take a minimum of 3-4 months. Much has been made recently of the increase in couples handling their own divorce. This has been caused by the impact of the changes in Legal Aid. Many couples decide to attempt to complete the minefield of forms themselves to avoid the perceived legal costs. Sadly, this is often a short sighted view, couples seek divorces as their relationships have broken down, and divorcing is often the only point they can agree on, but the cost to one party through agreeing and finding themselves legally trapped in a poor financial settlement almost always outweighs the costs of divorce. Many couples doing their own on-line divorce only take into account the finances that they spend today and do not take into account future level of expenditure. Every little cost needs to be planned for. Even MAS, Money Advisory Service, recommends that you have a legal expert do a “safety check” on the future needs of all parties. Costs for children

32

change year to year. In addition, as John Bingham points out that this has caused increasing delays and on average divorce now takes three weeks longer than it would have done this time last year. The delays are caused by the lack of experience and technical knowledge which lawyers, such as our Family Team at DGR Law, possess. The mistakes made when completing forms cause hold ups when processing the documents. The average time to process a divorce from first application to decree nisi now takes approximately 23 weeks if handled by lawyers but the time taken by couples representing themselves takes on average 32.6 weeks. It is an extremely emotional and stressful time for many people and delays and mistakes only add to the problems. Our Family Team at DGR Law does everything it can to minimise the stress of the divorce process by handling all the paperwork and correspondence for our Clients. We aim to achieve this in a relatively short time to achieve the best possible outcome. Our Team are also very experienced with the financial matters that follow

the grant of the Decree Nisi and which must be agreed before the Decree Absolute can be given. Mr Bingham does not make reference to the arduous process of Financial Remedy Applications and the entire required information gathering but this can be even more complicated than the previous stage of divorce. Unfortunately,, we have yet to see the completely amicable divorce, and as such we would not at any time recommend the self-representation of couples at this difficult time as finance and money aspects of divorce are always very emotive subjects, where objective advice is vital, and the applications can take many months and very intense negotiations. We are here to help every step of the way and do the best we can to keep costs down at this time. If you are struggling with the sinking sand of Divorce make an appointment for a free 30 minute consultation. Karen Salmon DGR Law 01672 511797

The Danger of Bones Are bones dangerous? That question is uppermost in many owners’ minds. The answer is …possibly yes. Everyone associates dogs with bones, and many dogs will regularly be given bones without any apparent problems.

36

However, every time we give our pets a bone we could be putting them at risk. There are many different types of bones that dogs have access to through their owners or through scavenging, which can include marrowbones, lamb bones, beef rib bones and chicken bones. Chicken bones are particularly dangerous as they produce sharp spicules when crunched and can cause significant damage to the gut.

are sturdy and less likely to splinter reducing the risk to your pet. Large knucklebones are also another type of raw bones to feed your pet dog with a reduced risk.

However, some people feed raw bones to their dogs. Raw meat bones are generally enjoyed by your pet dog and can provide mental stimulation and exercise the muscles of the jaw. They can also be useful in cleaning their teeth, reducing tartar and associated gum disease. In addition, the marrow present in raw bones contains valuable nutrients, in addition to the calcium in the bones themselves. However, there are a number of potential issues with raw bones but the key is to recognise a ‘safe’ bone from one that isn’t suitable for your dog, bones such as cooked chicken, pork, lamb or beef rib bone can be dangerous. Marrow bones on the other hand are very thick bones, often with marrow in the middle; they

Even though bones can have a positive they can also pose a negative affect too. They unfortunately can cause upset stomachs and intestines, (which sometimes occur just because the bone is a richer food than the dog is used to); we regularly see problems when bones have been swallowed. A crunched up bone which passes through the stomach and small intestine can harden in the large gut causing severe constipation problems and a larger piece of bone such as a beef rib or lamb when swallowed whole can gut stuck either part way down the oesophagus (the oesophagus lies between the mouth and the stomach), in the stomach or in the small intestine. Any such obstruction will cause the dog to be seriously unwell

Dogs are not designed to deal with cooked bones. Cooked bones are harder, more brittle and more likely to splinter than raw bones. with repeated vomiting and sometimes diarrhoea, and usually will require surgical removal. Dogs are not designed to deal with cooked bones. Cooked bones are harder, more brittle and more likely to splinter than raw bones. They are the ones most likely to be caught in the mouth, to pierce the intestines, to set like concrete in the large bowel, or stick like fish hooks into the rectum. All those events are bad news for dogs. The long and the short of it is… DON’T FEED YOU DOG COOKED BONES, they are not a necessary part of your pets stable diet requirements and could put your pet at risk unnecessarily. If you have any worries or concerns about topics raised in this article, please don’t hesitate to contact your local Vet for advice.
