Edit or’s Letter It’s a wild life!

Although I live in a country village, it’s not very often I see rare wildlife. The odd frog or toad in the pond, and the occasional visit of a Great Spotted Woodpecker is best I can hope for. (Not complaining as we do get a myriad of garden birds from goldfinches to long tailed tits, goldfinches to bullfinches). I do confess though to a smidgeon of wildlife envy when viewing the Facebook Page of The Waterfront Garden - Kennet Place. For those of you not familiar, the Waterfront Garden is an award-winning stretch along the River Kennet down past the Fire Station and the Old Ropeworks in Marlborough, looked after in the main by Val Compton with support from friends and neighbours, and ARK in the river itself. The kingfisher on the front of the magazine this month was photographed by Val, and is a regular visitor. Other sightings in the river include an egret, heron and water voles, along with the more common swans and ducks. As Spring approaches, why not consider a stroll along to the Waterfront Garden? Even if you’re not lucky enough to see the kingfisher, it’s a very pleasant spot. Thanks Val for the picture, plenty more to be seen on Facebook. Enjoy the magazine this month Contact us: Andrea Jerome Address: Ivydene, High St, Wanborough, SN4 0AD Tel: 01793 791104 Mob: 07836 580699 Email: aj@marlboroughtandc.co.uk All copy for March 18 issue is due by 2nd February 2018.

Amber Roots Amber Roots is co-founder of Avenue Day Nursery, which has nurseries in Marlborough, Savernake, Mildenhall, Aldbourne and Andover. She lives in Hungerford with her four daughters, Caitlin, 16, Florence, 14, Grace, 10, and Darcey, 8. The family have two spaniels, Annie and Winston. Have you always worked in childcare? Yes. Originally, I thought about being a teacher, but ended up doing Business and Finance at University. I hated it, so dropped out. After working for a while as an Accounts Assistant, I decided working in an office wasn’t for me, and that’s when I took an apprenticeship in childcare at a nursery in Newbury. When my oldest two were young I became a childminder, which I thoroughly enjoyed. How did Avenue come about? My sister, Emma Palmer, was running a Domiciliary Care Agency, and I was helping her out. Having young children ourselves we were aware of the shortage of good quality childcare in the area. We knew that the building at Savernake would be perfect for a nursery, and so we decided that we would open one, a decision we made over a weekend and we’ve never looked back. How long did it take? There are a lot of rules and regulations governing nurseries, so along with preparing the building we had to go through the process of getting registered with Ofsted and so on. It took from February through to August for our approval to come through, and we opened our Savernake Nursery in August 2007.

The other rooms took a little while longer to fill, but over time word of mouth was the best advertising, as existing parents recommended us to their friends and colleagues. We were approached to set up our second nursery in Andover in 2010, and we took over the Marlborough nursery in 2014. The opportunity to take on the two Sixpenny Nurseries in Aldbourne and Mildenhall came up last year.

How did you split responsibilities? Broadly, Emma manages the business and finance side of things, and I look after the running of the nursery. Now we have five nurseries we have an excellent management team in place which I oversee.

Do you have further growth ambitions? Not at the moment. It’s a challenging environment for nurseries, what with the increase in the National Living Wage, pension contributions and the new 30-hour entitlement having had an impact on costs, whilst we haven’t wanted to raise our fees too much. Ensuring the success of the five nurseries through the service we provide is our priority.

How did the business grow? We were lucky when we opened in that we had a whole group of NCT Mums that all

People they would look forward to coming to. We didn’t want an impersonal, corporate style. Wherever possible the children spend a lot of time outdoors (in all weathers) and learn through play. We like the children to have the opportunity to mix with all the ages in the nursery, as they would in a family. All our staff are experienced and qualified or in training, a high percentage have been with us for a long time, some since the beginning. Having been open for over 10 years it is lovely to see the children growing up – we have an after-school club, so I still see some of the children that came to us as babies when we opened. We also have a Holiday Club, which is very popular as we make a big effort to provide interesting and exciting activities for the children, including a lot of trips out. We even have an area of land that Lord Cardigan has given us to use in Savernake Forest. Who or what has been your inspiration? I grew up in Great Bedwyn, where my Dad ran the bakery. He worked hard to provide the best service to people, and certainly instilled in us a good work ethic, and a desire to run our own business. He is an incredible role model and a real inspiration. What do you enjoy most about your job? I absolutely love spending time with the children – I get to have lots of cuddles! I also enjoy spending time with the Holiday Club and After School children. I’m lucky, as these days I get to

travel around the different nurseries, have fun with the kids and then leave. It’s such a privilege to have the children entrusted to us – it’s a big thing for parents and we take it very seriously. I have wonderful conversations with the little 3 and 4-year-olds, they are full of joy and wonder. They can also be absolutely hilarious with some of the things they come out with, they have no discretion. Luckily, we do! Anything you don’t enjoy? I’m not the best at difficult HR issues – I don’t enjoy telling anyone off! Luckily, it’s a very rare occurrence. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? With four daughters, I don’t get a lot! I do enjoy keeping fit and have done a couple of triathlons (nothing too serious). I enjoy cycling and have taken part in the London – Reading ride for charity for the British Heart Foundation and this year I hope to raise money for a local charity called New Life that provides equipment for local premature baby units. I like going to the gym and walking the dogs also keeps me fit. I think physical activity is good to destress and is great for mental wellbeing I love spending time with the girls, who are all also active. They like horse riding, ice skating and gymnastics so there is the usual duty in Mum’s Taxi. A typical day out involves ice skating followed by a trip to Kaspa’s the dessert restaurant in Swindon, where we all eat far too much ice cream/cake. If I don’t have the girls I love to go to the theatre

especially the Ballet, I really enjoyed Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Opera House early last year as well as The Nutcracker at Christmas. Ballet was my childhood love, but more recently I have been to several Aston Villa games - I was lucky enough to watch them from heated seats in the hospitality lounge last November, probably the best way to watch them! What are you reading at the moment? I’m reading How to be Champion by Sarah Millican, I got it for Christmas. My favourite book is Jane Eyre, which I reread every year. I also like a good easy reading crime thriller by authors like Martina Cole and Patricia Cornwell, and a recent book I enjoyed is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (who also wrote The Kite Runner) Listening to? I listen to all sorts – mostly Radio 2 Watching? I enjoy watching films with the girls – things like Pitch Perfect and Beauty and the Beast. If with friends I can be tempted by a good comedy, Bad Moms comes to mind, which some of my nursery parents might be surprised to learn I thought was hilarious! I do like more serious fare too, such as Dunkirk and Hacksaw Ridge. New County Organiser for Wiltshire NGS Annabel Dallas of The Old Mill in Ramsbury has been named as the new National Garden Scheme County Organiser for Wiltshire. She takes over in the New Year from Sean and Kena Magee, who have been joint county organisers since 2007. Chief Executive of the NGS George Plumptre says “Annabel has opened her garden, The Old Mill in Ramsbury, for the NGS since 2002. It is a delightful and very popular garden in a lovely setting beside the River Kennet. Having trained as a botanist Annabel is a knowledgeable plantswoman and her late-summer dahlias are not to be missed.” The NGS Wiltshire has 54 gardens or groups of village gardens kindly opening for the scheme which vary from the celebrated landscape garden of Stourhead and large privately-owned gems such as Broadleas, Oare House and Cadenham Manor, to more modest properties that are lovingly maintained by the owners, such as Mitre Cottage and North Cottage. There are 22 gardens within 15 miles of Marlborough, with Crofton Lock House near Great Bedwyn as well as The Old Mill in Ramsbury. Opening dates and details of all gardens are on the website www.ngs.org.uk, with some gardens opening for snowdrops in February. In 2017 The National Garden Scheme donated to their nine sponsor charities a record £3 million.

ARK plants Black Poplars Action for the River Kennet (ARK) has been working with more young people through its Stonebridge Get Involved project. Recently teenagers joined ARK’s Project Officer Anna Forbes to learn about rare Black poplar trees and then plant ten saplings around Stonebridge Wild River Reserve, Marlborough.

10

The 15 acre water meadow, jointly owned by ARK and Marlborough Town Council already has eight mature specimens growing along the banks of the River Kennet and two healthy young trees planted by ARK volunteers back in 2012. In the past Black poplar wood was used to make matchsticks, carts and floorboards, but the wood is no longer in demand and more recently riverbanks and adjoining habitats have fallen victim to urbanisation and land drainage on a grand scale. These trees are found where conditions are damp, in this case on a floodplain along the banks of the River Kennet, nationally they are now isolated and scarce, particularly the female trees. In favourable conditions Black poplars can exceed 200 years old. Black poplars serve a very useful function and can still benefit humans today, they have the potential to help in flood management and can help the control of diffuse pollution. They are also highly beneficial to a wide range of wildlife, their catkins provide pollen and nectar for insects including bees. “Working with these enthuiastic young people is great, they are out in the fresh air and giving new things a go. They are meeting and working alongside other teenagers and finding out about their local wildlife site. Planting the trees is making sure we are planning the future of Stonebridge and it will be amazing for the teenagers to see their little male and female saplings grow into magnificent trees in the future.”, said ARK’s Anna Forbes. The ARK Stonebridge Get Involved Project is possible thanks to funding from the Local Youth Network (LYN).

The Community & Youth Centre is Open!

In June 2017, Marlborough Town Council took on a lease for the former Youth Centre at St Margaret’s Mead after cutbacks at Wiltshire Council meant that the building would have been mothballed leaving the town with no place for its young people to meet and socialise. Since then, the Town Council and community has campaigned hard to raise funds and refurbish the building bringing it up to a standard that will mean it can be used by all. It now has a multi-use hall for sports and events, a music room, football changing facilities, a kitchen, a TV room with a pool table and computer suite as well as a fully equipped kitchen and coffee bar area. There is also an office for use on a longer term hire basis. CCTV, an intruder alarm and an access system make the building safe for everyone. Thank you to those who came along to our celebratory launch event on Friday, 15 December – even Father Christmas

called in to have a look round. It was particularly good to see young people back in the building again. We are looking for volunteers to run a group at the Centre for older members of the community for which we have funding for an initial pilot run. We’d like to hear from volunteers who might like to run a group, dance or exercise classes, a reading club or other activity. Please contact the Town Council to find out more. Further details about hiring the Centre are advertised on the opposite page.

Big thank you to..

Civic Dinner We are holding a Civic Dinner in honour of 4MI Intelligence Battalion on Friday, 23 February at the Town Hall. This promises to be an excellent and enjoyable evening and includes entertainment from the Marlborough Community Choir. Tickets are available to everyone and details on how to purchase them are set out on the opposite page.

Health & Wellbeing

Cambridge Weight P lan It’s that time of year when we are examining our waistlines and we make New Year resolutions, which deep down we are not convinced will be successful. Weight loss is right at the top of the list! We are finally realising that we should not be defined by size as there are many beautiful plus sized models. Being happy with ourselves on the inside etc. does work. But…there is nothing like feeling lighter, being able to run, play, bend, wear clothes that do up and we can slip on! Many of us feel fabulous, and confident when we are lighter; not to mention the health benefits. Osteoarthritis, IBS, heart disease, ulcers, sleep apnoea, depression, diabetes, breathlessness, to name a few medical issues made worse by carrying that extra weight. To confuse things, nutrition has been a minefield lately. Food we were once encouraged to eat is no longer good for us. We used to be told eat three meals a day and now our portion sizes can be huge! One truth is that processed foods and sometimes low-fat foods are not helping us at all. Our digestive systems are overloaded, trying to digest foods that are filled with additives and toxins used to preserve all of those easily available and cheap ready meals. Fasting is now good as Dr Michael Mosley (5:2 diet) has proven. The body lays down new cells when we fast. Some Eastern faiths suggest fasting twice a week. High protein, low carb diets, juicing, slimming clubs. All have value. If we ate fresh, organic, plant based foods with good oils & nutrients, no alcohol, we would be well away! Life offers us challenges as our habits and emotions play a large part in our eating habits. It’s hard isn’t it? The Cambridge Weight Plan comes to the rescue. We understand how easy it is to use the pleasure of food to give us a boost and to feed our habits. The Cambridge Weight plan is a researched diet consisting of delicious vitamin packed shakes, soups, bars and meals. You can start with just those, or add food. There are 6 steps which help you to lose and maintain your new weight. Your Consultant will give you individual 1 to1 support and guide you every step of the way. You will have a best friend

16

for life! Personalised encouragement from someone who understands how it feels when you are not feeling your best and someone who has successfully used and may still be using Cambridge. There is no doubt, that as a Cambridge consultant for the past 12 years, I have helped hundreds of male and female dieters to achieve their goals. It can be tough at times but so rewarding when you see the smiles, not to mention the shiny hair and clear skin. It can be truly life changing. The Cambridge Weight Plan has been around for over 30 years. This British company uses a medical team and research and trains its Consultants to a high standard. The plan is easy, and the results are stunning! You make an appointment to see me and we get to know each other, filling out a medical record form so that we can find the right step for you. We can help diabetics and will always ensure that it is safe for you to follow a particular plan, sometimes consulting your GP. There are a variety of flavours of shakes, soups and we even have porridge and water flavourings. I weigh and measure you and we both decide, according to your needs and lifestyle the right plan for you. We then meet up every week or two. The diet costs around £48 to £60 per week for your food depending on height and gender and I come free! You can call me for a chat and a no obligation meeting so that we can discuss your needs. Don’t put it off! Make that much needed change now for your health and wellbeing. In time for a feel-good summer and beyond. I look forward to hearing from you. Lifestyle

A milestone approaching.. So, 2018 is underway and during January (which I always find a struggle), my thoughts have turned to what the year ahead brings. The biggest events for me are my daughter’s 18th birthday (the big “becoming an adult and having your first legal drink” one) and my 50th. Fifty!! When did that happen? I still vividly remember my 18th birthday party, so how can I be approaching 50? If it’s really true, then I must decide how to face my fate. I could simply hide away, go into denial and always claim to be 49, or I could embrace 50 as the new 40 and the golden age of time to have fun whilst I still have my faculties. The second option is preferable to me and my family, after all, they have to live with me and my state of mind. So, with positivity at the forefront, I have started to compile a “bucket list”. Unfortunately, I didn’t know what a bucket list was, so decided to do a little research. “Bucket list – derived from the term “kick the bucket”. Great, downer rapidly approaching again. I have had a look at the sort of things you can put on a bucket list and, with a deep breath I have compiled a list of a few of the great and not so great options:1. A party – fab idea – dance away the blues with friends, family, good food and good music. 2. A tattoo – de rigeur and very cool for a lady of my age perhaps, but not for me, and even if it was, what would I have and where would I place it? I’m not one for self inflicted pain and anyway, with my luck, I’d be the one with the misspelt “No regerts” on my arm for the rest of my life! 3. A bungee jump/parachute jump/fire walk – forget it – on all levels no, no, no. 4. 50 random anonymous acts of kindness – now there’s an idea. As it’s anonymous, no one else would know. After all, I’d be doing it for the kindness and not the brownie points. 5. Send a message in a bottle – I’d love to (my daughter found one once in Guernsey – great fun but would I not be littering the sea?)

18

6. Go skinny dipping – again, no! I am far too prudish and very cold blooded at that. 7. Eat at a Michelin Star restaurant – sounds good. 8. Drop one habit that is holding you back – a good one – just need to decide which of my bad habits I drop first – that’s another list for another day. 9. Read a book a month (I have got out of the habit of reading and certainly not read a decent quality book for a long time, so this one sounds good.) 10. Learn a new skill or language – now that interests me – I just need to find a good pottery course and a potter’s wheel and I’m off. So, it’s clear – I’m not one for pain, heights or nudity and I couldn’t even bring myself to add facing my biggest fear to the list …it’s only a small animal and I can run faster anyway! (for now). I know there’s nothing particularly “cool” or heart stopping, but the bits that I will do are realistic and, along the way, could bring happiness to a lot of people. So, I’m up for the challenge. I’ll keep you posted and if you’re queuing for a coffee in Marlborough and someone anonymously pays for it, it might be a “bucket lister” ticking a challenge off their list, so enjoy! Finance

Factors to consider for planning your retirement income Although retirement is the biggest financial goal for most people, it is not an end in itself. Thinking of the word retirement might conjure images of old age, but it shouldn’t. Today retirement is about having freedom: financial freedom to no longer be reliant on a salary or having to work to generate an income to live, and the freedom of time to choose how you want to spend your days. The sooner you start planning for the move into retirement, the more prepared you’ll be when you get there. Rather than leaving it until the last minute, by having a plan in place you’ll know exactly what you need to do to achieve your retirement goal. Retirement means many different things to different people. Once you’ve worked out what your retirement will look like, you can start to plan how much income you’ll need. A good starting point is to think about the cost of your current lifestyle and then adjust for any expected changes. Will there be things you no longer have to pay each month, like a mortgage or the cost of commuting to work? Will there be additional expenditure for things like more holidays or new hobbies? Is your idea of retirement taking lots of long holidays, cruises and sitting on sandy beaches? Or do you just want to spend a bit more time in the garden or with family. For some people retirement might be about seeking a career change or finding a new vocation. Or you might just want to carry on doing the job you love, but because you choose to do so rather than because you feel you have to. Traditionally pensions have been the most common way of saving to provide an income in retirement. In addition to pensions, you might have other savings or investments set aside for retirement that could either provide regular income or will be useful to dip into as and when it might be needed.

30

The biggest question most people have when thinking about retirement is will the money last or is there a risk it will run out in their lifetime. It might be difficult to guess how long you’ll live for, but life expectancy is a key factor in planning for your retirement. Retirement could last for 30 to 40 years and it’s important to make sure you’re not going to be struggling financially later in life. Generally you only retire once, so getting it right is quite important. Having a thorough financial review in the run up to retirement will give you the peace of mind that the retirement you want is achievable. At Chilvester we help clients to consider these factors to agree a retirement strategy, we can use lifetime cashflow projections to stress test alternatives and make recommendations accordingly to establish income streams in the most tax efficient manner. Vet’s Column

Heart disease in pets This month brings us Valentine’s Day. It’s a time that conjures up thoughts of love and images of hearts. And, it’s this tenuous link that has inspired me to talk about the hearts of our dearly beloved pets. It’s thought that up to 11% of the dog population suffers from heart disease. The most common form of heart disease is ‘chronic valve disease’ (also known as ‘mitral valve disease’ or ‘endocardiosis’). More than a third of dogs over 10 years of age may suffer from this form of heart disease, and it is most commonly seen in smaller breeds. In fact, it has been identified in more than 50% of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. It is a slowly progressive disease, which may begin in the first half of a patient’s life, but symptoms often don’t become apparent until middle age. The symptoms seen may include: • coughing; • reduced ability to exercise; • weakness or collapse. On examination, your vet will be able to listen to your pet’s heart, and they may identify an abnormal heart rate or rhythm, or abnormal heart sounds (for example, a ‘murmur’). They may also identify abnormal sounds within the lungs, and occasionally, a swollen abdomen (‘belly’). Where there is suspicion of heart disease, your vet may then advise further investigations including: • blood tests; • chest x-rays; • a heart scan; • an ECG; • blood pressure measurement. These tests are not usually too stressful or invasive for your pet, and can provide a lot of useful information, both regarding diagnosis and disease severity. And with a diagnosis, there are a number of medications that can be considered for your pet. Unfortunately, chronic valve disease is not curable. But, don’t despair! The prognosis

32

depends on the severity of each patient’s condition. Affected patients can go on to live full and complete lives for years after the disease is first identified, with the correct treatment and management. As with many diseases, early detection will mean earlier intervention and lifestyle management. This is why, in addition to routine vaccinations, we recommend at least annual general health checks. Although heart disease is much more common in older pets, young ones can also have heart problems from birth, so it’s equally important to get them checked regularly too. At these health checks, it’s also a chance to discuss other factors that are relevant to the health of your pet’s heart, including heartworm treatment (particularly if your pet is going to be travelling overseas), diet, weight and exercise. If you are concerned that your pet may be suffering from heart disease, or you would just like to discuss their routine healthcare, contact your local vet, who will be more than happy to discuss these concerns with you. And one other reminder! Don’t forget that lilies (in your floral bouquets) are toxic to cats, and chocolates are toxic to both cats and dogs. If your pet ingests these, do seek veterinary advice immediately.
