Edit or’s Letter One of the best parts of my job is that I get to meet lots of interesting people, from people who advertise in the magazine, to members of the community that have got something fascinating to talk about (in my opinion that is most people). Sometimes, they are inspiring as well as interesting, and the person I interviewed this month definitely falls into this category. Tessa Hicks has been running a line dancing class in Marlborough for the past 20 years, which is a feat in itself. However, this is only partly why I find her inspiring – mostly it is because she is an incredibly hard working woman, who has been a vet, a director of a National Fitness Programme and then trained to be a doctor starting in her late 40s. (All the while carrying on her line dancing class) After meeting her, I came away thinking anything is possible! You can read all about her on pages 6 and 7. There are lots of other interesting things to read in this month’s issue – so why not make yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and relax for 10 minutes while you have a flick through. Hope you enjoy it,

Tessa Hicks Tessa Hicks has been running the popular line dancing class at St John’s School in Marlborough for the last 20 years. She is a locum GP and lives in Ramsbury. How long have you lived in the area? I moved here with my then husband Steve in 1989. He had just left the Air Force and had got a job with BA, flying out of Heathrow. We wanted to be in a village with a good village school, within reasonable distance of Heathrow, and in a rural setting. Steve’s parents were in Cirencester, so happily we were near them too. By that time we had two young children, Gemma and Fiona, with our third, James, to follow in 1990. You were a Fitness Instructor before becoming a doctor? Yes, I originally qualified as a vet, but as my husband’s job in the Air Force meant we had to move around a lot, it was difficult to keep that going. I worked as a vet where I could, but often took on other jobs if there was no veterinary work available in the local area. After we came to Ramsbury I fell into being a Fitness Instructor. I was going to a gym and became interested in how the machines worked the body. No one seemed to be able to tell me, so I thought I’d take a Fitness Instructor course to learn more. As part of the course I had to learn Aerobics (which I was absolutely rubbish at to start with!). Having previously studied to be a vet, I had no problem with the theory side of things, but musicality, learning steps etc were a bit beyond me. Luckily, there were a great group on the course and I helped them with

6

I love to spend time with friends and family. Other than that my passion is travelling. the theory side whilst they helped me with the aerobics. After I qualified, I thought I would set up a small class in the village to repay the cost of the course. It was more successful than I imagined it would be, and I was asked to teach elsewhere. I ended up teaching up to 15 classes a week, of various types, including deep water fitness. After one class an American lady asked if I would be her Personal Trainer (which in 1993 was quite uncommon), and I took that on. I took some personal trainer courses and gained more clients by recommendation. How did you start the Line Dancing Class? I was at a Fitness Convention and one of the presentations was an American doing a Line Dancing class. I’ve always been interested in classes that are good for people who

don’t naturally enjoy exercise, so I stayed to see what it was about. It struck me as great for less physically active people, as the same steps can often be done at different levels of intensity. I took advice, imported some videos with routines etc from the USA, and started the class in 1996. I was pleasantly surprised when 15 people turned up for the first class and it grew from there. You celebrated 20 years of running the class last year Yes, we’ve carried on through thick and thin. At one point line dancing became quite a craze in the UK and there were many local classes. I used to cover for other classes too including one class of 240 people in Swindon! Line dancing has settled down since that initial craze, but our numbers stay steady at around 25-35 per class.

People Why do you think it has stood the test of time? I think because as well as an exercise class it is a very social group. Made up of all ages from teens -70s, many friendships have been formed in the group, and we have several social events in a year. We also have various fundraising events for local charities each year. Over time line dancing has become more complicated and faster as it has developed. At our class we regularly have new six-week beginner courses - the group is very welcoming to new people, providing lots of help and encouragement. I try and make sure that there are dances for all abilities, so the experienced dancers aren’t bored, but the beginners can keep up. Line dancing is also a very non-threatening form of exercise – anyone can do it, you don’t need any special clothes, you don’t need a partner! We dance to country music, with a fair sprinkling of other genres thrown in. What’s not to like?! How did you celebrate your 20 years? We had a special party in July last year with live music. Around 100 people attended, including many people from other classes in the area. It was great to catch up with everyone, and we raised over £600 for local charities. What led to you training to be a doctor in your 40s? I had become involved in a programme called “Exercise referral” which is where doctors refer patients for exercise as part of their treatment. I specialised in this and eventually became director of the main national training programme for exercise referral. I developed the course, wrote the syllabus and the national standards and assessments for the Awarding bodies. As well as training the fitness instructors, there was a demand from the

medical profession for more information/training in this area. I delivered some training to doctors, which increased my interest in becoming a doctor myself. I thought I would apply to some fairly local medical schools, they would say no, and I would carry on as before, having “scratched the itch”. I applied to 4, two of which I needed to do entrance exams for, as well as attend an interview. To my surprise I was offered a place at St George’s in London and so embarked on my medical training just before my 47th birthday. It must have been hard work? It was! Especially as my children were at various stages of exams too at the time. We used to all sit round the table studying together. The kids were always my priority, and they did well. At medical school, there was one other person my age on the course which was great, and we also got on really well with our much younger colleagues. Moving on to our Junior Doctor years was even harder, with really long hours over 5 years, as well as the professional exams. I had failed to factor in menopausal effects when undertaking my training (!), plus unfortunately my marriage broke up around that time. I carried on though, as didn’t want to waste the work already done. You carried on the line dancing class all through your training? Yes, it was a bit mad really – I used to drive back from London on a Tuesday night, take the class and then go back again! It was even harder when I was a junior doctor – luckily I had some great support from members of the class, some of who could cover for me when I couldn’t make it. Now you work as a locum? Yes, I prefer being selfemployed, and working as a

locum is more flexible. I tend to work 10-12 hour shifts, several days a week. What do you do in your spare time? I love to spend time with friends and family. Other than that my passion is travelling. My partner Rob and I have done quite a lot of trips over the last couple of years – from Australia to Ecuador, Vietnam to the USA. We went to the Country Music Festival in Nashville, which was amazing. I like to get off the beaten track where I can when travelling. Rob says if there’s a hill or a mountain, I’ll want to climb it! If I can abseil down a waterfall, so much the better. How did you and Rob meet? We met through internet dating – to be honest, with my job and at my age I’m not sure how else I would have met someone! The whole thing was terrifying – I met my husband in Sixth Form, which meant that I had never actually been on a date. I approached it as meeting interesting new people rather than looking for romance, which made it less intimidating. It was quite time consuming, and I had stopped actively seeking dates when Rob contacted me. He had actually read my profile, which is more than most do, and sounded more interesting than average, so we met up and hit it off. Plans for the future? Both my daughters are getting married this year, so I’m looking forward to that. Who knows apart from that – I’m always open to new adventures, let’s see what happens. No matter what, line dancing has a great following and will continue! Tessa’s line dancing class takes place on a Tuesday night between 7-10pm in Marlborough. She is starting a new 6-week beginner course on Tuesday 21st February 2017. If you are interested in finding out more give her a call on 01672 520336.

Are you a keen local artist? Wiltshire Museum is looking for entries for its biennial Oexmann Art Competition, open to both children and adults. Cash prizes are offered for all categories, with a £500 prize on offer for the winner of the adult Portrait of Theophila category. To Joan Oexmann enter you must either have been born or live in Wiltshire. The competition is dedicated to Theophila Joan Oexmann, (born Copland-Griffiths), who grew up in Potterne and was a keen amateur painter. She married an American GI and went to live in the USA. In 1987, her husband J. Richard Oexmann of Lexington, Kentucky, gave the Wiltshire Museum £10,000 to endow a biennial art exhibition in her memory. The family are still active supporters of the event and travel from America to attend the prize-giving. The aims of the fund are to encourage and promote artists born or living in Wiltshire, of all ages and abilities.

Marlborough Passion P lay gains momentum Plans for the Passion Play being performed in Marlborough continue to develop. The play is scheduled for Easter Saturday, April 15, and will be performed on the town’s streets by around 350 members of the community, including 100 children. Telling the story of Easter, including the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, the play features Frazer Blaxland, 31, in the role of Jesus. A professional actor, Frazer has appeared in commercials and documentaries as well as on the stage. The other key roles in the play have been cast from the local community.

Starting with a procession along the High Street, most of the play will be performed in The Parade which will be closed to traffic for most of that day.

An exhibition of winning and selected entries will be at the Museum from 2 April to 29 May 2017. Entry is free for children (max 2 per child) and costs £3 per entry for adults (max 3 entries). Entries must be submitted to the museum in Devizes between 6 and 12 March

Helen Stokes, the driving force behind the project has always envisioned it to be an inclusive undertaking featuring as many local people as possible. Even the audience are encouraged to come in costume, even if that consists of sheets and tea towels.

Jo Hutchings, Publicity Officer for the Museum says “We are eager to attract adult entries from all over the County, as well as from Art Clubs and schools. I am sure there are some wonderful artists out there who would love to enter.”

Public Toilets Councillors have selected their preferred contractor for the refurbishment of the public toilets at George Lane Car Park and depending on our weather, work is planned to start in late February with completion in April. All looking good for opening in the spring. Borrowing approval for the project has been received and a loan will be drawn down from the Public Works Loan Board – a statutory government organisation that lends at preferential rates to local authorities. Running costs of public toilets are high – cleaning, utilities, electricity, water, business rates, etc. We have been advised by the British Toilet Association that the toilets should be a chargeable service to help meet these costs and Councillors have agreed to a rate of 20p which is in line which charges in similar sized towns across the country and will help to keep down the costs for local council tax payers. The Chantry Lane toilets will remain open until George Lane is ready and will then be sold to help fund the remainder of works to the building.

Housing Needs Survey Households in Marlborough, Mildenhall, Preshute and Savernake

have all received a housing questionnaire. This is part of the work towards a Neighbourhood Plan and will help in finding out about the housing needs of our communities - an exercise that hasn’t been undertaken in the area for many years. The Steering Group would like to hear from as many households as possible after which the information will be analysed by independent researchers and will help to provide evidence of what housing is really needed. This will all add weight to the Plan itself and influence the way Marlborough and its surrounding parishes develop in the future. More information is at http://www.manp.co.uk where the survey can also be completed online. Surveys should be returned by Friday, 17th February 2017.

A Present for Prospect In the last few weeks, our Mayor, Councillor Noel Barrett-Morton, presented a new lifting cushion to Prospect Hospice’s Outreach Centre at Savernake Hospital. This was possible through funding from the Town Council’s Small Grants Scheme. The cushion is lightweight and sits neatly in a small, compact bag. It is designed to inflate and help those who have fallen down to get back up to a sitting position again - all with the help of just one person. The Mayor even tested out the cushion for himself!

Pelham Puppets Many of Marlborough’s residents will remember the importance of Pelham Puppets to the town and may well have worked at the factory based in London Road. Others will have grown up playing with the internationally famous puppets and will have their own personal favourites. The Town Council is delighted to be helping to support the organisers of a Pelham Puppet Festival in the summer. If you would like to be involved in this, please contact the Town Council offices.

Common Users Group We work closely with the Common Users Group which is made up of representatives of sports groups, conservation groups, dog walkers and interested residents. It meets around four times a year to discuss the use of The Common to share ideas and feed into the work of the Town Council’s Amenities and Open Spaces Committee. If you would be interested in joining, please contact the Town Council’s offices. More information about The Common is at www.marlborough-tc.gov.uk

Taming your teenager My son turned 13 at the end of last year, which means that we now have two teenagers in the house. This is a frightening prospect – although, should it be? After all, I was a teenager once so I should know the score, shouldn’t I? When one thinks of a teenager, a multitude of preconceptions come to mind. Messy bedrooms – tick; excessive bathroom use – tick (or, in some cases, not enough bathroom use); attitude (double tick); washing everywhere and so much of it (triple tick). The floor on or around the laundry basket is a particular favourite – not in it though, that requires use of arms. I long for a laundry chute, or even two, one for lights and one for darks right down to the washing machine. Ahhh... dream on. I quite often see a sign in gift shops which, to me, encapsulates the adult/ teenager relationship so well. With thanks and praise to its creator it reads as follows:“Teenagers Tired of being harassed by your parents? Act now! Move out, get a job, pay your own way, while you still know everything.” Is that fair though? Aren’t we all struggling to keep up with change and the teenage years bring so much and in so many ways. Suddenly my babies are stopping looking like babies and growing into adults. I am always terrified as I look across the rugby pitches at the year ten and eleven “boys” who seem about 8 ft tall and bear resemblance to the Six Nations

14

squad. If only time could stand still or I could go back and tell my younger “Mummy” self to make the most of it whilst they are little, I would do so. Of course, even the word “Mummy” is slipping from their vocabulary now and especially around their friends. As for a kiss goodbye at school drop off, forget it. The language barrier has widened further as my children have hit their teens. I feel like I speak cat and they speak dog most of the time. That is of course, when we speak or, indeed, when they are able to answer. Having a conversation now requires my physical effort to check that they haven’t got headphones in their ears and that they are actually listening. Their groans of “...but you don’t understand”, “it’s Sooo unfair” and “everyone else has got one” are met by the adult retorts of “because I say so”, “when I was your age...” (Gosh, I sound like my Mum!) and the firm favourite “you treat this place like a hotel!” Sometimes, words aren’t even needed. There is a certain look which a teenage child can give which is an absolute killer. A slight sneer combined with a raise of the eyebrows from a teenager can break even the strongest adult will. Has it ever been encapsulated into an emoji I wonder..? My daughter has been a “teenager” since age ten, so

you’d think that after six years, I would have it all cracked and life chez Kellow would be akin to the Little House on the Prairie. Oh, how I wish. What the years have taught me, however is that I cannot expect to be my children’s best friend and, although, deep down we hopefully all love each other to bits, there are times when I or my Husband is in charge and we have to step into the adult role. Our children still need us, however grown up they think they are and however much they protest – “Mummy, I’m not a child…” and we need them too. After all, who else is going to work the Sky remote and load an “App” onto an iPad for us old folks?! So... time to enjoy and embrace the teenagers. After all, before we know it we will be “empty nesters” longing for the sweet harmonies of doors slamming or a near broken leg falling over a pile of washing. Oh, and Mum, “Sorry!” Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. When she isn’t running around after her family she is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors, specialising in family law.

Singer Songwriter Andy Comley to play Aldbourne Singer-songwriter Andy Comley has moved out of the usual venues and headed back to his roots, by embarking on a tour of rural halls. Having played on three continents and supported some of the UK’s top singer-songwriters such as Boo Hewerdine (Eddie Reader), Emily Barker, and Amy Wadge (Ed Sheeran), Andy explained why he has now set his sights closer to home. “I believe in community, and arts provision for all, and I understand that the local hall can be an important place for people to meet and create social ties,” said the 47 year old, who grew up in the sleepy Hampshire village of Owslebury.

18

However he also has artistic reasons for moving out of the town. “I want an intimate atmosphere for my music, where there’s no distraction, and the audience can focus and be transported musically, and I’ve found it in small rural halls” The gigs are sit down-lights out-spotlight on affairs, and Andy says that this format makes for an immersive evening for the audience and performer alike. “People have been responding really well and we’ve had some really great feedback.”

Often likened to Neil Young, Andy has been called passionate and a poet, and of his last album, Verity Sharpe (Radio 3’s Late Junction) said “I love it”. Andy will be playing with double bassist Dave Bulbeck at Aldbourne Memorial Hall on11th March.Doors open at 7 for 7.45pm Tickets £10 online at www.andycomley.com /pages/gigs.htm

Often these works are substantive both in scope and cost and when things go wrong they are likely to go wrong in an expensive manner and, given it will occur in your home, in a very intrusive and stressful way. There are some simple steps you can take to try and minimise the risks, and below are a couple of them. The first safety net is to ensure that whomever you use is working in compliance with the Building Regulations. This seems obvious, but it is surprising how often attempts are made to avoid this. The works for an extension will almost certainly have to be compliant with Building Regulations, a failure to build in accordance with the Building regulations, or make changes for approval required by a Building Control officer can lead to fines. The second safety net is to ensure you have the appropriately skilled or qualified people working and advising on the appropriate elements of your project. By this I do not only mean use a good builder for the building, rather the importance of recognising

that there is a delineation of roles and skills in the building industry and to be wary of those purporting to have knowledge outside their role. For example, some less competent builders are prone to make comments such as “that span will be strong enough like this”, or “yeah, that wasn’t supporting anything”, they are not structural engineers and they are not competent to decide on matters of structural design. Often this will occur because one of the parties is looking to cut costs, and this will be very tempting but the results can be extremely costly. I may be placing too much emphasis on this, but from experience too many building projects hit problems because the client is reliant on the wrong professional. Yes, if there is a defect that professional will likely be negligent and a successful claim be brought against them, but the cost and stress can often be avoided. It is beyond the scope of this article to go into the various roles in the building industry, but the reality is no matter how much you do the “right thing” problems can still

However, often when building and associated works are done negligently the resulting defects can be undetectable.

occur and when it does a claim for negligence will have to be made within six years of the event constituting the negligence. However, often when building and associated works are done negligently the resulting defects can be undetectable. When the defects concern or affect the electrics or plumbing, this can be very dangerous. If the defect was not apparent from the outset and only later becomes known a claim must brought within three years of the date you first realised the negligence occurred. This is known as the “date of knowledge” and it is not a straight forward principle as it works on the basis of what you should have known even if you did not know. If any building defect comes to your attention long after the building works were done it is important that you swiftly take legal advice otherwise you risk your building claim being out of time to bring. Vet’s Column

Dental disease Tooth and gum disease is one of the most common conditions seen by vets. It is not the case that older dogs and cats lose their teeth , this can be prevented with awareness and simple home care. Have you had a look in your pet’s mouth?! If he or she is amenable (don’t get bitten!), try lifting their gum. The teeth should be white with pink gums. Your local vet will be happy to arrange an appointment to check and discuss your pets’ dental health or treatment with you. Tell tale signs of dental disease are; : Bad breath : Yellow/brown teeth : Red or bleeding gums : Pain or swelling of the jaw or face : Reluctance to eat /pick up food or toys : Weight loss : Rubbing face/pawing at mouth : Excessive salivation Pet dental disease is not the same as humans. In dogs, periodontal disease is more common, where the tissues around the tooth become infected with accumulation of tartar (calculus) causing gingival (gum) recession with infection. If untreated, the tooth loosens in the socket causing inevitable discomfort and eventual loss of the tooth. The canine and feline mouth is not a clean place - it’s full of bacteria! The bacteria grows on the tooth surface forming plaque. Most of this is removed by the tongue or with hard food or chews, but any plaque left becomes thickened. This is calculus/tartar (the browny deposits seen on the tooth surface). As this layer thickens, it presses on the gum, causing irritation, inflammation and allowing the bacteria to infect (gingivitis). The gum recedes with the socket infected and the tooth loosens. Oral infection can spread to tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Worryingly, the bacteria absorbed into the blood supply will be carried to other organs. For example, in older dogs and cats, heart conditions (endocardiosis) can be due to

bad teeth. Kidney and liver problems also! What can be done? Prevention: The amount of plaque on individual dogs’/cats’ teeth varies and can be reduced easily with special foods or chews/toys and regular homecare, i.e. brushing. This may sound daunting but pets can be taught to accept a toothbrush. Daily brushing is the most effective way of reducing plaque. Use a specially formulated brush or an old human one (ideally a soft one). There are special gels and toothpastes at vet clinics. Do not use human toothpaste as it is not well tolerated and contains foaming agents, which are not meant to be swallowed. If your pets’ mouth looks/smells unsightly, he/ she may need a dental procedure. Make an appointment for a check - up. If the vet/nurse deems this necessary, your pet may need antibiotics before the procedure. Pets require anaesthetic to clean their teeth, so older pets may need a blood test first to check that their liver and kidneys are healthy enough. A descale of tartar will remove the bulk of the dirt and you can continue at home with the preventative measures of brushing/specific foods/chews/toys. Speak to your local practice, who will be happy to advise and help. Drove Vets
