Editor’s Letter Great local service

Some of you may have noticed that I am apt to bang on about how its great to use independent local businesses where possible. Admittedly they are the lifeblood of this local business, but there are other reasons too. Local businesses put more money back into the local economy, and you can usually rely on them to provide great customer service. Last month my less than 2-year old computer died (a very serious occurrence for a business like mine), so I took it along to Green Machine near Ramsbury. Although initially it seemed to be fixed, it soon had a relapse and proved unsaveable. Unlike a big company, they didn’t just send me away with a shrug of the shoulders, they provided one of their refurbished computers to a similar spec to replace it. What fantastic service! Thanks Green Machine, next time I need computer help I will be back. Another company that prides itself on its customer service is Bow House Lifestyle, this month we feature Jess Preston who runs the business - a bundle of energy and full of ideas she is passionate about service and attention to detail. You can also read about local community juicing service My Apple Juice, whose founder Richard Paget is equally dedicated to offering a great service to individuals and community groups. Other fantastic community initiatives include Marlborough Litfest at the beginning of October and the much widened Adult Education programme offered by St John’s. Lots to read about this month - enjoy!

Jess Preston Jess Preston runs Bow House Lifestyle, incorporating Bow belles Café, with shops in Marlborough and Hungerford. She is married to Joe, and has a baby son, Milo. The family live in Marlborough with their dog Beans. Are you from the area originally? My mum and dad are from Newbury, and I went to Chilton Foliat Primary School. We moved to Marlborough as they were keen for me to go to St John’s, which I did. It was a great school, although we never did get the new building that kept being talked about. Glad they got there eventually, the new school is amazing - I’ve been there to talk to the kids about business, and my NCT classes were held there. Have you always worked in interiors? No, ever since I was quite a young child I wanted to be a lawyer. That is what I trained to do, and I worked in criminal law for a while. However, I found that it wasn’t for me - it was very difficult dealing with the social issues I came across every day. No other area of law appealed, so I decided to rethink. I did a business course and started working with my mother who at that time had the shop in Hungerford, as well as running an interior design business. I enjoyed it, so I took an interior design course at the KLC School of Design in London, which meant

6

that I could take on my own projects. So what does Bow House Lifestyle entail? It encompasses the shops, the interior design service, our own brand products (I have a range of textiles, and home accessories) and our café, Bow Belles. When you opened the shop in Marlborough you opened the café as well - what was the idea behind that? When people make interiors purchases they like to think it over, the café gave them somewhere to mull things over. People that have been in Marlborough a long time may remember there was a café here prior to it being a boutique, so it has that history. I did a lot of research to make sure that we opened a stylish café that was different to anything else in Marlborough. It’s been really successful, and is now a completely separate business, rather than just an add-on to the shop. It’s had a bit of a makeover recently with the layout updated to give more space to customers.

How would you describe the shop’s style? I call it contemporary French style with an English twist! We like to think that we sell a lifestyle - you can enjoy a coffee, buy a gift or furnish your home from top to bottom. We can only show a fraction of what we can provide in the shop, so pride ourselves on offering excellent customer service- if you don’t see what you are looking for - just ask, we will always do our best to help. Do your interiors reflect the shop’s style? Sometimes, but only if that fits the client’s brief. We’re as happy to design a modern interior as a shabby chic. We work for corporate clients and property developers as well as private clients. Currently we are working on a new hotel at Newbury racecourse, and last year we worked for AP McCoy and his wife on their new house. We don’t just work on big jobs though, we are as happy to advise on a single room as a complete house. If building work is involved the earlier we can get involved in the

People process the better, as it helps to plan switches and sockets, as well as being able to advise on materials for interior finishes. What prompted your own range of fabrics and accessories? I really enjoy designing and a range of designs exclusive to Bow House made a lot of sense for both the shop and website. I started with a range of furnishing fabrics using a linen base fabric and designs that fit with the Bow House look. I’m expanding this into soft furnishings and house ware using some of the key designs in the collection. The designs are inspired by our surroundings, so there are country style designs using animals such as deer, chickens and hares, seaside inspired themes (my mum lives in Cornwall now) and some florals too as well as abstract designs including paisley style and checks. The colours are fairly muted to fit with our look. What are your ambitions for the business? Eventually I would like around 5 - 10 shops and a successful retail website. I’m keen to grow organically, to retain the care and attention to detail that I want to see throughout the business. As we grow, Joe my husband will join the business full time managing the branding, marketing and website. For me it is important that it is a family business, as I am hoping that Milo will grow up and become part of it. It’s quite a lot to cope with already, how do you manage it? I do have to be quite organised! Especially since Milo came along it has been important to make sure I have enough time for the business and for him too. I had quite

a difficult time when he was born as I was quite poorly, and he had a serious lung infection - that was the time it was important to focus completely on him, Now, I have a good balance - I do quite a lot of work in the evenings when he is in bed. Joe and I work together on a lot of things, especially the website. I love my work, so its not really a hardship. Also, I’m really fortunate to have a fantastic team around me who all contribute to the success of the business. We have around 17 people now and they all pull together to make everything run smoothly. What do you enjoy most about your job? I love being my own boss - I can be as creative as I want to be, and have the flexibility to work my hours to fit with my family. I probably work as many hours as anyone else if not more, but when I want to. I also love the variety that I have - I enjoy wearing different hats - interior design one day, café the next, product development the next and so on. It keeps it interesting, and I enjoy problem solving. My law background gave me a good grounding for that!

What do you enjoy least? In the early days with Milo I would get lots of phone calls because that’s how I’d always

worked - it was quite difficult with a new baby. That doesn’t happen now so much as I’ve learnt how to delegate more effectively, which is a joy! What do you do in your spare time? I don’t get much of that! We like to spend as much time together as a family as we can. I have an ambition to own a sailing boat as I really love sailing, but that will probably be a while in the future. Do you eat out locally? Before we had Milo, we used to eat out all the time. We liked Coles and Pino’s (they know me so well there they have my glass of Prosecco waiting!) Now we stay in a lot more, and have a bedtime routine for Milo after which we’ll sit down to eat. What are you reading? I haven’t had much chance lately, but I really enjoy crime fiction (there’s my law background again) - so anything by James Patterson, Lynda La Plante etc. I find reading quite a good way to de-stress so I’m hoping to get it back into my routine soon, A nice hot bath and a good book is great! Music? Under Joe’s influence I’ve grown to really enjoy R ‘n’ B, but I also love jazz. Milo loves music - he kicks his legs in time to the tunes in the car. Bow House Lifestyle and Bow Belles Café are at 84-85 High St, Marlborough, SN8 1HF (near St Peter’s Church) or visit their website at bowhouselifestyle.com

Do you have apples that go to waste? Richard Paget is passionate about apples - apple juice in particular. Having grown up in a Somerset house that had 30 acres of land given over to growing cider apples for the original Taunton Cider Company, he has always had an affinity with the fruit. Long having lamented the amount of fruit that goes to waste from apple trees in people’s gardens he finally set up My Apple Juice in 2010. “My daughter Camilla was obviously fed up with me going on about it, as she said “daddy, stop whinging and just do something about it” - so I did!” says Richard. “ I borrowed a press from a friend who had upgraded his press, took over the kitchen Magimix, bought bottles and a pasteuriser and offered an apple juicing service to Little Bedwyn village.” Although common on the continent, there are very few community orientated juicing services in this country. “In Italy for instance, a lot of people have several olive trees, but it wouldn’t be cost or time effective to have their own pressing facilities. Private or cooperative run olive presses are common, for small growers to earn extra selling their oil” explains Richard “The same principle works for other fruit across Europe, but has not been seen it rural Britain since the 1800s.” My Apple Juice produces apple juice for people whose fruit would otherwise go to waste. “Sadly up to 90% of apples in private gardens fall and go to waste. Even people motivated to use what they can, often cannot eat, cook, freeze or give away all their trees produce. Rather than see the fruit

10

wasted we can turn it into their own bespoke apple juice, with personalised labels. All they need to do is deliver the apples, and we will do the rest” Any amount of apples from a bucketful to a ton can be turned into juice. A standard wheelbarrow full (about 30kg) is the amount needed to ensure the juice is from your apples alone, and will produce about 22 bottles. (If you just have a bucketful your juice will be a mix of your and other people’s apples) The apples are washed and checked, then pulped, and then put through the apple press to squeeze out the juice. The juice is pasteurised and bottled in brand new sterilised bottles, personalised labels printed with your house name and there you have it - your apples, your juice, your bottles and your labels. Once sealed, the juice will keep for at least 12-18 months if unopened. The cost per bottle is £2, which compares very favourably with premium apple juices from a supermarket. The beauty of this service is that every juice will be slightly different as every tree is slightly different, and there is absolutely nothing added - apples in, apple

juice out - what could be better than that? From 1000 bottles in the first year, the service has grown year on year. “We are hoping to produce 50-60,000 bottles this year. Last year was a particularly bad apple crop, but the weather this year is promising a bumper harvest.” As well as juicing for individuals, Richard also works with schools and other community groups. “Schools can combine educational workshops with raising money for school funds. They gather in apples from parents, we juice them and the PTA can sell the bottles at Christmas Fairs or other school events. Schools and community groups that have run ‘Apple projects’ include Preshute, Great Bedwyn, St Francis, Marlborough Youth Group and Pinewood School, Its worked really well so far” Although apple juice is the mainstay of the business, other fruits can be juiced too. “We often do pear juice, although pears are slightly more difficult to work with. We recommend a mix of apple/pear “Pepple” juice! We are starting to mix other fruits with apples such as strawberries or raspberries, even grapes -“Grapple” juice,” If you are interested in finding out more, see the website at www.myapplejuice.co.uk or contact Richard on 07825 372225 or email: info@myapplejuice.co.uk .

Training for the Future

A milestone has been reached this summer in our Grounds Team. Our apprentice, Michael Haines and trainee Aaron Presley, who have been with us for more than 2 years, have received symbolic tools of the trade – a fine pair of secateurs - from our Grounds and Estates Manager, Richard Beale. Michael has passed his Horticultural Level 2 qualification at Wiltshire College, Lackham and recently gave a presentation to staff and Councillors with an overview of this land-based study course. Aaron, who is also a retained firefighter, has been honing skills in all areas of the Grounds Team’s work and has passed training courses in chainsaw use, strimming, highways signage and excavator operations. Congratulations go too to fellow team member, Richard Jones, who passed his Horticultural Level 1 qualification.

Thank you St John’s

Team took these down and have re-painted them and we asked Mike Harrison of the Art Department if he and his students could help us out with painting the crests. They have done a great job in bringing these back to life. Included in the project were Emma Beasley and Sophie Gibb. Watch out for the re-vamped signs being returned to their rightful places soon. Very many thanks to St John’s students.

Work Experience

Sixth former, Ellie Jerome, recently spent a couple of days at the Town Council offices learning more about the town and parish council sector - the first tier of local government. This was a taster towards her future aspirations to study politics at university. Amongst other things, Ellie spent time working alongside staff in the front office, took a tour of the town to visit those areas for which the Town Council is responsible, sat in on a briefing for the Town Mayor and helped to prepare for a Full Council meeting. We wish her well for her future studies.

Starting big school “Children are like cornflakes in a box, the bigger ones rise to the top - then when they go to Secondary School it’s like someone has turned the box over” So said my daughter’s head teacher when she was in year 6. Moving from a school where you are top of the tree, to one where you’re at the lowest branches again is an upheaval for every child - and every parent. Having been through it once, I’m hoping it will be somewhat easier when my son moves up to St John’s this September. At the Leavers’ Ceremony for year six, there was a slideshow of photos showing each child as they grew up through the school - it didn’t seem long since their first day in reception, and now here they were off to big school. It’s quite a wrench changing from a school where they are dropped off and picked up every day, and where you know the teachers to speak to, to a school where they trot off on their own via public transport. I have to confess to a tear in the eye at the end of an era. Onwards and upwards though - this is what I’ve learnt from my first experience of the transition from Primary to Secondary, hoping the second will be similar:After the uniform fitting with the traditionally three sizes too big blazer, name tapes come next. After having a

14

disaster with iron on labels (having spent hours ironing them on they all decided to peel off in the first wash), I’d recommend sew in labels! Because travel to school is via public transport, a mobile phone is useful to stay in contact - though it’s important not to panic if you can’t get hold of your child as they can not be relied on to have it switched on or charged up. St John’s is a great school with fantastic facilities which I marvelled at on the Parents’ Induction evening, but it’s huge compared to our village primary school where there were only eleven year six pupils. New kids are bound to take a while to find their way around, but if they do get lost there will always be someone around to show them the way. Be prepared for unexpected eventualities - after school clubs cancelled at the last minute, PE kit left at school, ingredients needed for a lesson that you’re not aware of until the night before. Your resourcefulness will be challenged! Unlike when your children are at Primary School, you will not be spoon fed info, if you don’t know - ask. I’ve always found the school and individual teachers very responsive to requests/questions. The website is also a good source of information. Accept that your child might want food from the café at the school, and your healthy packed lunch lovingly prepared may no longer be de rigeur.

Remember that as well as being slightly scary - it is also an exciting time for new secondary school pupils. Meeting new people - friends and teachers; learning new things; the chance to take part in after school clubs and sports; becoming more independent and learning to take responsibility for themselves is all part and parcel of moving up the educational ladder. So, even though I might be emotional when my son sets off for his first day at secondary school, I’ll be confident that he will rise to the occasion and make a great start on the rest of his educational life. Best of luck to all the other Year 7 pupils and parents! Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. When she isn’t running around after her family she is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors, specialising in family law. Over the next few months she’ll be sharing her thoughts on family life in a regular column.

Do you love books? The Marlborough LitFest (2-4 October), is now in its sixth year and takes pride in celebrating the best in good writing, whether from established bestselling authors or new emerging writers. The 2015 programme has something for everyone, with more than 25 events over three days featuring fiction and non-fiction, as well as poetry, creative writing workshops for adults and teenagers and various children’s events. The 2015 line-up includes: international bestselling author of The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series Alexander McCall Smith, prizewinning novelist and poet Helen Dunmore as well as the 2015 Golding Speaker, Salley Vickers – the annual Golding speaker in honour of distinguished local author, William Golding. A real treat for Wolf Hall fans is BAFTAaward winning director Peter Kosminsky in discussion with Channel 4’s Jon Snow about the recent TV adaptation. History buffs can choose between historical biographer and novelist Alison Weir or medieval historian and Magna Carta expert, Sean McGlyn; broadcaster, novelist and human rights journalist, Bidisha, will be discussing asylum and exile issues, particularly those seeking refuge in the UK from abroad. Choose from a mix of new young authors and contemporary novelists, a new biography of Vita

16

Sackville-West as well as a new translation of Anna Karenina. Current political commentary will be provided by a parliamentary satirist plus top tips from a financial journalist on how to navigate the current financial markets. And nature lovers can take a walk on the wild side through the Savernake with BBC’s Springwatch producer and naturalist Stephen Moss. Poetry-lovers can get their fix with the annual amateur open mic Poetry in the Pub event, whilst acclaimed poet, playwright, broadcaster, lecturer and current National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke will close the LitFest on 4 October. The recommended summer read is ‘The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry’ by Rachel Joyce, who is the annual Big Town Read author this year. An international bestseller for Rachel, the novel was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and translated into 34 languages. A great suggestion for any book groups so they can join in with the Q&A at the LitFest with Rachel in October. The LitFest’s children’s programme features new children’s author Jane

Hardstaff talking about her Tudor novels in workshops with 300 local primary school children, a creative writing workshop with Chris Wakling at Dauntsey’s School and a talk by Ian Whybrow for younger readers as well as the popular annual writing and drawing competitions for children. For the first time in 2015 we will be bringing Marlborough its first Big School Read, with filmed book reviews from St John’s students vlogging on their favourite books. The full festival programme is online, and tickets and programme catalogues are available from The White Horse Bookshop, Marlborough High Street, or Pound Arts Tel: 01249 701628 / 01249 712618 (www.poundarts.org.uk/). Looking to learn something new? This Autumn St John’s Academy in Marlborough is running its biggest ever portfolio of courses and workshops that are suitable for both business and pleasure. With over two hundred courses scheduled to run during this academic year, delivered by an expansive, knowledgeable, dedicated and most importantly, enthusiastic team of tutors, there really is something for every member of the community. The courses and workshops cover a variety of subject areas running from two hour individual workshops to courses that are ten weeks in length. Another first this year is the introduction of an online booking system enabling customers to be able to book and pay for their courses using credit and debit cards. Below is a taster of what is available from the Adult Education programme, full details can be found on St John’s website www.stjohns. wilts.sch.uk/html/community/ AdultEd.html. A number of courses are available to enable students to either learn or practice a new hobby, craft or activity. Areas include art where you can learn the basics right through to belonging to an Art Group where you can practice your craft with others. Additionally there is the opportunity to study floristry, patchwork, cookery and silk embroidery skills, unearth your family history and even have a walk into the world of Italian style and fashion. Gardening

September in the Garden For many gardeners September marks the beginning of a new gardening year, the nights are starting to draw in and late flowering plants such as Dahlia’s, Japanese anemones, Echinacea and the stately Miscanthus grasses give their last flush of colour and interest before the temperatures plummet. Mid September through to the end of October is one of the best times to think about starting bigger garden jobs such as making new borders or constructing new features. the cooler, wetter gives newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials time to establish a good root system before winter arrives and the frost makes the ground too hard to work with. When choosing new plants makes sure they suit the conditions of your garden to avoid failures. Give your borders a overhaul by cutting back perennials that have finished flowering leaving any with attractive seed heads, like Echinacea for the birds to feed on. Clear away any spent annuals and add debris to your compost bin. Spread a dressing of organic matter, paying attention to the areas around any established plants. Don’t worry about digging it in as the winter frosts and rain will carry the nutrients through the soil to plant roots. Autumn flowering annuals -

34

pansies and polyanthus - and evergreens can be planted in pots and containers to give the garden some colour through autumn through to the Spring. Hardy annuals can be sown in borders ready for flowers next year and prune climbing roses once they have finished flowering. Most spring bulbs can be planted now to give a burst of colour in the spring. When choosing bulbs make sure you pick the ones that are firm to touch and are healthy with no signs of disease or rot. As a general rule bulbs should be planted two to three times the depth of the bulb. For a natural look gently scatter handfuls of bulbs in the border and plant them where they drop. Bulbs can also be added to containers for extra spring colour. Tender plants will need some protection over winter so move pots into an unheated greenhouse over cover with a clear plastic dome and move as close to the house as possible. If tender plants are in borders or they are too big to move. Stuff the centre of tree ferns with straw and gather the fonds over the top before tying together and covering in bubble wrap. Banana plants, palms, Olive and Bay trees can be wrapped in horticultural fleece covered with bubble wrap. It may look ugly but expensive plants are worth it.

Many lawns will be showing signs of wear and tear and some annual maintenance now will ensure a healthy lawn next spring. Use a lawn rake to rake over the lawn to remove any dead grass (scarifying), then moving across the lawn using a garden fork pierce the lawn surface to a depth of about 15cm every 25cm cm or so (aeration). If you have a large lawn tools can be hired to carry out both these tasks. Any large weeds can be dug out by hand. Finally apply a suitable autumn lawn feed following manufacturers instructions. To reseed a bare path fork over the patch so soil is crumbly and sprinkle with lawn seed, cover the seed with a thin layer of compost before watering. Thin out congested plants in ponds leaving the debris on the side for a few days so any wildlife can get back into the water. In the vegetable garden continue to harvest fruit and vegetable as they are ready and also clear any debris to prevent the spread of pests and disease. Plant out spring cabbages and sow winter lettuce. In the greenhouse remove shading, reduce the amount of watering and close the doors and windows on colder days and nights. By Jill Blackwood

Parental Responsibility and the Importance of Birth Certificates Having parental responsibility is very important. Under the Children’s Act 1989 it is defined as “All the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority, which by law a parent of a child has in relation to a child and his property”. It makes the parent responsible amongst other things for agreeing medical treatment, choosing and providing education, providing a home, and maintaining the child. Essentially, while it sets out that the parent should look after their child, it also gives the parent their say on the important decisions on how their child is raised, and gives a right to know about the child’s progress and well-being. A mother will automatically have parental responsibility for her child from birth. A father, however, will only automatically have parental responsibility if the parents were married at the time of the child’s birth. Recent Office of National Statistics figures have shown the sizable increase

36

in the numbers of couples in cohabitation rather than marriage; this, naturally, means that there will be an increase in the number of unmarried parents. As parental responsibility does not automatically arise for these unmarried fathers, how to go about gaining it is very important. Since 1 December 2003 the easiest way for the father to gain parental responsibility is to be on the birth certificate and the parents will simply register the birth of their child together. If the father cannot be present, a Statutory Declaration can be used in place of his signature. If the natural parents of the child marry after birth, then by law the birth has to be re-registered, so giving the father parental responsibility. Of course, the parents can make an application to re-register a child’s birth adding in the father. Another option is a Parental Responsibility Agreement: put somewhat crudely they are an agreement between the parents that the father shall have parental responsibility. These agreements can only be made in the prescribed manner or form set out in the Children’s Act 1989. The father gains parental responsibility once it is ratified by the court. In our experience this applies in particular to fathers who often have to work abroad, such as those in the services, who are unable to return to be register their child’s birth. This is a very useful tool and provided that the parents are on good terms it is a straightforward process.

Unfortunately, things cannot always be done amicably. If the mother is refusing to agree to the father having parental responsibility the option is apply to court for a parental responsibility order. When making such an application the father has to show his commitment to the child in various areas, such as finances, contact with his child and involvement with the child’s education. These applications are best made with the aid of legal advice. One point that should be remembered is that once gained there is a presumption that parental responsibility remains until the child is 18. Only the courts can remove parental responsibility and will not do so without serious consideration of the situation. Alex Atkins DGR Law 01672 511797
