Edit or’s Letter Hello 2017!

It’s that time of year again – I don’t know about you, but I’m not very good at New Year Resolutions. So bad in fact, that this year my resolution is not to make any! Then I won’t have to feel so bad when I fail to keep to the diet or stay on the wagon. I know many people are great at sticking to their resolve, but there are at least as many who don’t make it past the end of January, with some not lasting a week. Prospect Hospice have got a good idea, they are suggesting a Feel Good-a-thon, whereby you do something you feel good about, while raising money for charity. It can be anything, such as losing weight with friends and being sponsored, (a New Year Resolution in disguise I think), having a dinner party and taking donations etc etc Its an extra incentive to achieve, as you’ll feel good about your activity, and about helping a great charity. Whether you’re making New Year Resolutions or not, I hope that 2017 proves happy and successful. Make the most of it, it won’t seem long until we are welcoming 2018! (It’s true, time does go faster as you get older!) Happy New Year

Ruth Kolish Ruth Kolish is a Travel Counsellor, a homebased personal travel expert organizing bespoke leisure and business travel arrangements, from single flights to around-the-world itineraries. She lives in Mildenhall with her two children, Fenella 13 and Hayden 11, and their two cats Mitch and BA. Are you from the Marlborough area? I am from the Wirral; I went to Birkenhead High School, followed by college in Chester, and my first job was in Liverpool. The call of the Big Smoke beckoned and I moved to London in my late teens. I suppose you are born with a burning desire to travel, but it is from a year in Australia in my early 20s that the world became smaller and I became gripped by the bug. I moved to the Marlborough area nearly 15 years ago. What’s your favourite part of living in the Marlborough area? The mix of location, culture and nature. Sitting here, I overlook the Kennet Valley to the important Roman settlement of Cunetio and raptors, river waders and garden and game birds simultaneously fly past my window; all within a commutable distance from London. Schooling options for my children are fantastic too. How did you become a Travel Counsellor? I have always worked since my children went to school. They needed me in a different way as they moved up to St. John’s Academy, and coupled with my desire to return to the travel industry and build my own business, I investigated various homeworking travel

6

I take great pleasure in the whole process of working with my clients in transforming their travel dreams into reality. companies. I come from a family of stockbrokers and bankers and pitched my intentions to build my business with Travel Counsellors to my family ‘Dragons’ Den’. With accolades including being listed in the The Sunday Times ‘International Track Top 200’ 2016 and recently winning the Amazon Growing Business of the Year (Larger Company) 2016, it was agreed that Travel Counsellors was an exciting opportunity for me. It must be very fulfilling to forge your own business out of your passion? Absolutely. I consider myself very lucky to be able to marry my passion for travel and my drive to build my own business. In observing me, it is also an industry that my children can learn a lot from. I encourage them to travel whenever possible to experience it’s life-lessons.

Whilst well-travelled myself, I still have a very long bucket list of destinations and adventures I would like to experience. And when not on my own adventures, I travel vicariously through my clients! Why use your services when I can just go on the internet and do it all myself? Travel is very personal and I have very high standards. As your own travel expert, I get to know you and your family, and your individual needs first, rather than compromising your needs by recommending a holiday in a brochure which is ‘nearly right’. To my mind, that is not good enough. I care about you and your journey and will build travel arrangements that fit you perfectly, within budget, saving you the time and exposed risk of organizing everything yourself. Being totally independent, I am not tied to any specific tourism

People product, whether that be airlines or accommodation. My clients can be absolutely confident that my travel recommendations have been tailor made specifically for them and 100% financially secure through the Travel Counsellors Trust. How much do you charge? This is the beauty of Travel Counsellors. My clients experience expert travel advice, personal service and financial protection at no charge, rather than the high risk strategy of booking through unknown suppliers on the internet or mailshot companies, and attempting to put arrangements together themselves. Are you able to arrange business travel? Absolutely. I already look after the travel interests of many business travellers and their colleagues. Do you specialise in any particular destination? I used to head up the Tourist Office for British Columbia, Canada, and was involved in the marketing of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Canada in general. Today I am in the Canada Travel Specialist Programme run by Destination Canada, which ensures that I am a leader in the market on any trends and changes in Canadian tourism product, and in the best position to advise my clients. How about advising clients on other destinations? Yes, I can help with any destination you are interested in. As well as my own experience I can access the knowledge of over 1500 experienced Travel Counsellors around the world. What is the most unusual/ interesting trip you have organised? I organised a trip viewing Grizzly and Kermode Bears at Knight Inlet, and then snorkelling with the salmon

run at Campbell River, Vancouver Island, Canada, arriving by seaplane. My client had an amazing time with endless wildlife opportunities. What do you enjoy most and least about your job? I take great pleasure in the whole process of working with my clients in transforming their travel dreams into reality. Sharing their anecdotes and photos with me on their return home is just precious, and to think I was able to eliminate their stress in taking care of everything from booking and check-in to ground arrangements enabling them to truly relax and enjoy their trip is very rewarding to me. The part I like least is being left behind! So where do you go on holiday? To appreciate the world around us and indulge the curiosity to travel overseas, I have instilled in my children that it is important to understand and experience our own surroundings. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful and diverse country. This year we went on a surfing break to Newquay staying at the Sunnyside Hotel overlooking Towan Beach, and then went island hopping in the Isles of Scilly staying at the Star Castle Hotel on St. Marys, and also our annual summer pilgrimage for a week at the fabulous Trefeddian Hotel in Aberdovey, Cardigan Bay, with my large family before the start of the new school year. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and how would you get there? I would love to experience the Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express rail journey from Bangkok to Singapore, of course flying first class return. Not one for me and the children, but if I ever get a bit of ‘me’ time, this is top of my list. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I have played tennis since

childhood, and continue to enjoy playing weekly yearround at Ramsbury Tennis Club in all weathers. Really, very little stops us! Coach Lewis Fletcher is a great inspiration and I have built very strong friendships with my fellow ‘tennis ladies’. My children play regularly too, so a passion we share. Where do you like to eat out locally? I loved eating at Coles and the No 48 Tapas Bar so disappointed they have both recently closed their doors. I look forward to my forthcoming reservation at Rick Stein’s having enjoyed a meal at his Fistral restaurant this summer. Where do you like to shop locally? I had a milestone birthday recently, and whilst I don’t particularly wear jewellery, I wanted to mark the occasion with a single diamond. David Dudley Jewellers were incredibly patient in sourcing a diamond for me to the right cut and clarity, and then customising a platinum ring to my exacting requirements. A very special purchase from a very special shop. What are you reading at the moment? I am reading Villa America by Liza Klaussman. I really enjoyed her first novel, Tigers in Red Weather. What music do you enjoy listening to? Whatever mood I am in I can listen to Coldplay all day long. Saw them live at Wembley last summer which didn’t disappoint. Any New Year resolutions? I work alone, from home, and too close to the cupboard. Eat less …… To contact Ruth call 01672 838280 or visit www.travelcounsellors. co.uk/ruth.kolish for inspiration on travel itineraries.

Celebrating New Premises On a cold wintry night at the end of November I went along to Mirabel Clinic’s celebration drinks evening to mark the opening of their new premises. Run by Dr Alison Brooks, the Clinic has moved to a purpose designed site in Wood St in the Old Town part of Swindon. Alison, who hails from Ogbourne St George, worked with a specialist Interior Designer to get the feel she wanted. “We wanted the clinic to have a welcoming, homely feel, whilst still offering the state of the art facilities you would expect.” Mirabel specialises in a wide range of non-surgical treatments which aim to help restore, enhance & maintain naturally youthful looks. The look is pristine, and the colour scheme of duck egg blue, pale greys and creams is relaxing and calm. The reception and waiting areas are welcoming, and manage to avoid being clinical by the use of tasteful accessories. The treatment rooms are furnished with the most up to date equipment you could require, but still have a friendly feel. “It took us a considerable time to find the right premises, but we are absolutely delighted with our choice. We have been open here since the end of September, and reaction from existing and new clients has been wonderful.” From what I saw, the celebration was richly

10

deserved, and the throngs of people in attendance all seemed to agree! For more information visit www.mirabelclinic.co.uk

Take part in a Feel Good-a-thon! Prospect Hospice are encouraging people to take part in their Feel Good-a-thon this January. The idea is to do something that makes you feel good, while raising money for the charity. In an interesting twist on New Year’s Resolutions they are suggesting you take on something new, do something that makes you feel good, and raise vital funds so that they can continue to make others feel good too. Suggestions include taking up yoga, losing weight, hosting a dinner party, de-cluttering the house to name but a few. All you need to do is let them know what you are planning to do this January at fundraising&events@prospect-hospice.net or call 01793 816161, and one of their fantastic fundraising team will be in touch to provide you with all you might need for your new year’s fundraising adventure!

Students help out Action for the River Kennet (ARK) worked with 30 St John’s Academy sixth form students to clear the River Kennet and surrounding areas in the centre of Marlborough of litter recently. The students donned wellies, waders and litter pickers to reach rubbish in the river at Cooper’s Meadow, The Priory and the Waitrose riverbank by Hillier’s Yard car park. “The students come along as part of their lower sixth Beyond Me sessions, they did a fantastic job enthusiastically working together collecting up the litter and making the river, its banks and the adjoining land much more pleasant. We hope to work with the students again very soon.”, said ARK Project Officer Anna Forbes.

Christmas Lights Switch-on Even the rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of those who came along to watch Marlborough’s Christmas Lights Switch -on on Friday, 18th November. There was plenty to do and see with a market stretching along the High Street, stage performances from choirs and dance groups, children’s fairground rides and a chance to meet Father Christmas in his Grotto at the Town Hall. In the lead up to the switch-on at 7pm our Mayor, Councillor Noel BarrettMorton, was taken by Santa in his sleigh along the High Street to the stage where he was announced by our Town Cryer, Mike Tupman and M.C., Nigel Kerton. There the Mayor wished everyone a very happy Christmas and presented the town’s Citizen of the Year, Anne Crawley, with her award before they both joined in the countdown to switch on the lights. None of this would have come together without the hard work from the Rotary Club with their marshals and busy elves in the Town Hall, the Lions Club, Wiltshire Council, the police, 4th Military Intelligence Battalion, the Showmen’s Guild and more.

Also all those in the choirs, bands, and dance group, who put in hours of practice towards their performances. The Town Council passes its thanks onto them all.

Citizen of the Year 2016 Chair of Marlborough in Bloom, Anne Crawley, is our Citizen of the Year. From a teaching background, Anne moved to Marlborough about 5 years ago from London and it wasn’t long before she was involved in activities in the town. Anne has thrown herself into community work. She joined the In Bloom group more than 2 years ago and quickly stepped into the then Chair’s shoes to head up the committee. She has shown real enthusiasm and energy, galvanising organisations, residents, businesses and shops into action. She has worked tirelessly to unite the whole community towards success in the Royal Horticultural Society’s South West in Bloom competition and this year helped bring home some impressive silverware, all rewarding the town’s efforts. On receiving her award, Anne was keen to say that it also belonged to the many local volunteers who had turned out

throughout the year, whatever the weather, to help transform their town. We pass on our congratulations to this very deserving winner.

Small Grants Scheme

The scheme for 2016/17 is now closed with all the awards budget allocated. This year there have been funding grants made to East Wilts Mencap, St John’s Ambulance, Phoenix Brass, The Jubilee Centre, Prospect Hospice, Manton Pre-school and more. The scheme will re-open from April 2017.

Happy New Year! The Town Mayor, Councillors and staff wish all readers a very Happy New Year!

The Town Council offices re- open after the Christmas break from 10am on Tuesday, 3rd January 2017. Emergency contact details can be found on the Town Council website at www.marlborough-tc.gov.uk

Detox

informal noun noun: detox; plural noun: detoxes ˈdiːtɒks/

A process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances; detoxification. January seems to be the only month which can be followed by the word “blues” which is a shame really as it comes with so much promise. I have rhapsodised before about the promise of snowdrops and daffodils and I still do cling on to the anticipation of seeing budding flowers accompanied by the increase in temperature as the months pass. As well as re-growth, sadly, January also seems to be the month of the resolution, usually sporting or dieting or, if Christmas was a total blast, a bit of both. For those with a stronger will than me, (my attempt at a juice diet did not last long and beetroots are no longer my friends) there is always the detox. Although these are limited usually to a day or so, so many of us fail. A day or two on lemon water, cucumber or cabbage may seem easy but after five minutes on the regime, all that one can think of (or is it really just me..?) is cake/crisps/ biscuits/bread or all of the above. I’m not one to enter into a new fad half-heartedly. My darling Husband will often catch me swotting up on the iPad on the “best detox” or “best diet” or “best exercise regime” along with all of the recommended kit or equipment. He kindly

16

lets me get on with it, but we all know where my latest nutri juicer will end up. Yes, you’ve guessed it – in the cupboard next to the spiralizer, the yoghurt maker and the soup maker. I wonder, if we had an unused kitchen equipment amnesty, how many times would the lot, placed end on end, reach around the world? We could, of course, just pile it all up and climb to Mars. With the best will in the world, much of my Welsh dresser is filled with barely used machinery. You might recall my Japanese tidy up last year. This cupboard escaped my scrutiny and may therefore tick two personal boxes. I shall tidy it and I shall give it a detox. It won’t take long before I fall for the next “must have darling” object and the cupboard will be full again. Acknowledging therefore that I have the weakest will, I have embraced a new resolution. This coming year, 2017, will be the year of cake. After musing about my love of cakes I was contacted by a reader who proposed that we

set up a cake club and yes, Dear Reader, we have done just that. Like the budding spring flowers, the club is very much in its infancy. We have no name yet, but a joint wish to share our baking delights, enjoy a good natter and share and use our recipes for the good of the local community. I resolve therefore to take the more achievable line of little and often rather than total abstinence and to embrace the urge to bake. Our first meeting is fixed for 10th January and the theme is “baked tarts.” If you wish to join us, please do drop me a line via the editor (email below) for more detail and, in the meantime, a very Happy New Year. Five tips for driving safely this winter The number of road traffic accidents increases during the winter months. The challenging weather and very wet, icy or snowy road conditions can make driving hazardous. Taking preventative measures can make a huge a difference. Here are five useful tips for safer driving this winter: 1. Give yourself plenty of time – Journeys can take longer in bad weather or difficult road conditions. Allow an extra 10 – 15 minutes before you set off to make sure your car is properly deiced and the windows and mirrors are clear. 2. Use your lights – Visibility can be a serious problem during the winter. Don’t forget to use your dipped headlights if you are driving in dull, gloomy conditions or in heavy rain or snow. 3. Watch your speed – Make sure your speed is appropriate to the road conditions to maintain safe stopping distances between you and the car

in front. In wet weather, you should double the distance and bear in mind that in snowy or icy conditions, it can take 10 times as long to come to a complete stop. 4. Adapt your driving to the conditions – If you’re driving in wintry conditions, move off slowly, try to stay in a high gear and keep your engine revs low. This will reduce the risk of wheel spin. 5. Expect the unexpected – Sudden patches of freezing fog, flooding, black ice, slow-moving snowploughs and gritting lorries can all catch drivers unawares. New Year, New You It’s that time of year – Christmas is out of the way and everyone’s thoughts turn to New Year Resolutions. “New Year, New You” is a phrase that you will see in a lot of places after the festive season – a cliché perhaps, but there is no doubt that January is the time that people tend to take stock and resolve to change something about themselves. It doesn’t necessarily mean giving something up, often it’s about trying something new. With this in mind – here are a few ideas from our lovely advertisers to start your thinking off….

Getting fitter Zumba Everyone I know that does Zumba® says it isn’t like exercise. A dance fitness class, Zumba® fuses fitness, entertainment and culture. In Marlborough, Studio Movida on Elcot Lane is the place to be. Originally started by Lau Vergara, the studio was taken over by three of her Zumba® aficionados – Penny, JoJo and Anna. A wide choice of classes are available, including Zumba® Gold for those who want a less intense workout. As it says on their website “Zumba® doesn’t feel like an exercise class, it doesn’t feel like you are burning hundreds of calories just that you are dancing your troubles away and being the carefree, beautiful dancer you were always meant to be! Don’t work hard… have fun, join the party AND get fit....” For more info see www.zumba.expert Yoga For those who enjoy a calmer form of exercise, perhaps Yoga is for you. Family Law Update and Hopes for 2017 Firstly may the whole team at DGR Law, David, Alex, Brian, Mandy and myself wish everyone a Happy New Year with good wishes for a healthy and peaceful 2017. I begin my articles this year with 2 major milestones in 2016 for Family Law in England. At the very beginning of 2016 we saw a major break-through in the fight against Domestic Violence with the granting of a new law under the Serious Crime Act 2015 which makes controlling and coercive behaviour of a person within a family or intimate relationship a crime. The CPS said abuse can include a pattern of threats, humiliation and intimidation, or behaviour such as stopping a partner socialising, controlling their social media accounts, surveillance through apps or dictating what they wear. Anyone found guilty of this could face up to 5 years in prison. I would like to point out at this stage that statistics show that for every 2 women that suffer Domestic Abuse in the UK 1 man will also suffer Domestic Abuse. Approximately 8.3% of women and 4 % of men suffered some kind of abuse in the UK in 2016. Throughout 2016 the Family department at DGR Law has been waiting with bated breath for the outcome of the push for No fault divorce

in Parliament. The current system of Divorce works on the principle that one party is guilty of something, adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion or simply that the parties have separated, however the Courts still like to have a reason for the separation. This often causes hostility and anger between the parties who may have simply grown apart and agreed to divorce on good terms. A lot of Clients that come to us are a little surprised and hesitant that unless they blame their husband or wife for something they have to wait 2 years to be able to get divorced. 60% of all divorces cite adultery or unreasonable behaviour and of those 91% only do that so they don’t have to wait 2 years because they wish to move on with their lives and be financially sorted. Resolution is the national organisation of family lawyers committed to non-confrontational divorce, separation and other family problems. They are an organisation of 6000+ members, of which DGR Law is one, that have been lobbying the

The need for co-habitation agreements is becoming even more important as people want to protect themselves against future disputes which invariably includes disagreement regarding property and money.

Government to modernise Divorce Law. 150 senior Family lawyers attended Parliament on November 30th to push the matter. So 2017 – what does it hold for Family Law? Co-habitation continues to be the fastest growing family type in the UK. The need for co-habitation agreements is becoming even more important as people want to protect themselves against future disputes which invariably includes disagreement regarding property and money. The ownership of property in a co-habiting family is a major concern as often one party owns the property prior to the new partner moving in. These worries are certainly things to be sorted in advance. As for the DGR Law team – we hope to continue to support the local community and people of North Wiltshire in all their legal matters and if we can be of any help please contact us for a free 30 minute consultation.

Vet’s Column

Let this be a weight off your mind! I imagine that you will soon be making your New Year’s resolutions and I hope you be able to stick to them. But will you make ones for your pets as well? So many of our New Year resolutions involve eating more healthily and losing the weight gained over Christmas and the previous year. Unfortunately as vets we see all too many pets who are overweight to some degree, so why not make New Year resolutions for them? There are a number of reasons why a pet gains weight. Often weight gain is a combination of eating too much rich food (including tit-bits or snacks!) and not having enough exercise. Older pets in particular are usually less active and need fewer calories. A pet can gain weight after neutering/spaying or because it is a certain breed (Labrador Retrievers, Cairn Terriers, Cocker and King Charles Spaniels, Basset Hounds, mixed breed Cats) and these pets especially need their diet and exercise level to be carefully controlled. It is rare that a pet has an underlying medical condition which makes it overweight, so weight gain should never be blamed on this. A pet can be considered to be overweight if it does not have a waistline, if its ribs or spine cannot be felt, if it has difficulty walking or is slow to move, if it is short of breath, if it is badtempered, if it sleeps a lot or if you find yourself having to loosen its collar. If you are not sure, your Veterinary Practice will be happy to weigh your Pet and score their body condition. The practice can then compare their current weight with their ideal weight. Being overweight does not only affect your pets’ health now, it can affect it in the future also. Overweight dogs and cats are more likely to develop arthritis, heart disease and breathing problems. Overweight cats are more likely to develop Diabetes as well. Often weight problems can be managed by changing diet and lifestyle.

Just remember to feed your pet separately if you have several pets and do not leave other food lying around.

Lifestyle diets (light or senior diets) or low calorie prescription diets exist to help your pet lose weight and then control their weight, while still making sure they feel full and satisfied. Just remember to feed your pet separately if you have several pets and do not leave other food lying around. Encouraging your cat to follow you when you move around the house and in particular when you go upstairs, spending time playing with them, hiding food to make them hunt for it, and shining a torch against a wall for them to chase will make them more active. Walking with your dog regularly at a constant pace, encouraging them to play (fetch, run an obstacle course) and exercising them in water (hydrotherapy) will make them more active. Always reward them with praise and attention not with food. This all may seem daunting but your Veterinary Practice will be able to help you set up a weight loss program and give you the ongoing support and encouragement that is needed. It may seem cruel to suddenly change your Pets diet and lifestyle, but sometimes you need to be cruel to be kind. Remember if your pet loses weight, they will enjoy life even more and you will enjoy having their company even more. If you have any worries or concerns about your pet please do not hesitate to contact your local vet.
